Riding the emotional cycle of deployment

By Beth Wilson
Special Contributor .__ .

The emotional middle stages
of the deployment cycle take
place during the actual deploy-
ment. Each stage may be experienced
to varying degrees and lengths,
depending on your personality and
previous experience.
Stage three, "emotional disorganiza-
tion," takes place during the first six
weeks of deployment and for many is
the most difficult stage. In this stage
there can be an initial relief that your
Sailor is gone and then a sense of
guilt for feeling that way. This sense
of relief comes from the emotional
phases prior to the departure. These
feelings are normal.
This stage can also be accompanied
by feelings of restlessness and aim-
lessness. You may experience feel-
ings of isolation. It takes time to get
into a 'groove' without your Sailor
in the home. Be patient with your-
self. Communicate with your Sailor
as much as possible. Start your mail
drop/care package. Get out and spend
time with friends or family during
this time. Pick up a hobby and set
a few goals to accomplish during
deployment. If this stage seems over-
whelming, contact your ombudsman
for support and resources.
Stage four is "recovery and stabili-
zation." This is when we have adjust-
ed to the changes of deployment.

Bridging the

generation gap

workshop Dec. 1

By Kenneth Richmond
Special contributor

T he Total Force Management
Department of Commander. Navy
Region Southeast offers "Bridging
the Generation Gap" workshop at NAS
Jacksonville. The Dec. 11 workshop takes
place in building 4 (Michael Hoff Building),
room 116 from 8 a.m. noon.
This high profile, interactive workshop
explores the characteristics of the five gen-
erations in today's workplace. It explores
the different perspectives, expectations and
socialization of the various generations and
provides strategies and solutions the partic-
ipants can implement to help create a posi-
tive work environment. Additionally, this
workshop will show the participants how to
better relate to each generation, minimiz-
ing conflict, miscommunication and wasted
energy. The participants will learn what
each generation thinks of the others and
how each wishes the others to view them.
This highly acclaimed workshop is open
to all military and civilian personnel. This
workshop is free and is limited to 25 par-
ticipants on a first come, first serve basis.
Individual command workshops are avail-
able upon request.

tact Kenneth Richmond at (904) 542-4733

Many spouses find a new strength
and maturity at this point and enjoy
a new sense of independence. This is
when you smile and say, "I am going
to make it."
Anna was a new Navy wife facing
her first deployment. She was a lovely
young lady with many concerns over
the upcoming deployment and unsure
how she would survive. During the
"emotional disorganization" stage,
she relied heavily on her ombudsman.
Anna would call daily, email often
- most times in tears. Anna's life was
disrupted by the absence of her Sailor,
her lover and her best friend.
Anna's ombudsman recounts, "I tried
to help Anna meet other wives, develop
interests and become active in spou-
sal support groups during this chal-
lenging period. After about four and
half weeks, the phone stopped ringing
and the emails from Anna dropped off.
That was when I knew that she made
it through the most difficult stage. She
was now enjoying a new sense of inde-
pendence and I watched Anna mature
during this time."
Stage five is "anticipation of home-
coming." Depending on the length
of your deployment, this can begin
as early as six weeks prior to the
expected return. This stage is char-

acterized by joy and anticipation. We
start planning homecoming festivi-
ties and dream about the day we see
our Sailor walk across that tarmac or
gangplank.
This stage may also bring appre-
hension and concerns about your rela-
tionship. Perhaps you gained a little
weight while your Sailor was gone.
Maybe you experienced a great sense
of growth during deployment and
wonder what your marriage may be
like when your Sailor returns. These
are all normal feelings.
Throughout the stages of deploy-
ment it the most important issue is
to stay as connected to your Sailor as
much as possible. Take every oppor-
tunity to write, email, send care pack-
ages and family grams.

Award-winning restoration

By Clark Pierce

Members of the
CMO-11 Tiger
Team were award-
ed the Navy and Marine
Corps Achievement Medal
Nov. 5 by Capt. Kyle
Kozad, Commander, Patrol
and Reconnaissance Wing
11 for their professional
achievement.
According to CMO-11
Commanding Officer Cmdr.
Patrick McCormick, the
team planned and executed
the exterior restoration of
NAS Jacksonville's static
P-3C Orion display aircraft
located near the main gate
- in only three weeks.
"This volunteer team
overcame equipment prob-
lems, supplier shipping
delays, hornet nests and
challenging weather condi-
tions to complete the pres-
sure washing, sanding,
repairing, repainting and
detailing of the aircraft,"
explained McCormick.
"Team leader AM1 James
Agner and his volunteers
worked all hours of the day
and night, including week-
ends, in order to get the
job done prior to the 2008
NAS Jacksonville Air Show.
Additionally, his team vol-
unteered another entire
week following the air show
on fine detailing to ensure
the accuracy and durability
of their work."
The aircraft's vertical
stabilizer (rudder) is now
emblazoned with the squad-
ron insignia of VP-5, VP-16,
VP-45 and VP-62, in addition
to CPRW-11 and CMO-11.

Cmdr. Ivan Carlson said the
prep and sanding was criti-
cal. "It took two weeks of
pressure washing and sand-
ing to get the aircraft ready
for paint, which included
primer and finish coats."
An environmental chal-
lenge was removing numer-
ous hornet nests.
"Some crew took a few
stings for the team," said
Carlson. "They also set up
lights for volunteers who

worked after sunset. Work
also proceeded on weekends
in order to meet the dead-
line."
Agner expressed his
thanks to motorists who
drove by the project for
keeping his team's morale
high. "Drivers were yelling,
honking, waving and giv-
ing our team the thumbs-
up. We're glad to share our
Navy pride with the rest of
NAS Jax," said Agner.

Family Fitness Center caters to parents

By Kaylee LaRocque ......
Deputy PAO

The NAS Jax Family Fit-
ness Center offers parents
the opportunity to get the
exercise they need while cater-
ing to their children. The cen-
ter, located above the Youth
Activities gymnasium on Mustin
Road, provides an alternative to
families with small children. It
features all the state-of-the-art
exercise equipment, free weights
and a special play area where
children can hang out while their
mom or dad is working out.
"The center is geared toward
the stay-at-home parent because
they can't take their children to
the regular fitness facilities on
base. They can bring their chil-
dren with them here to work out.
It's just another option for our
military families," said NAS Jax
Fitness Source Manager Chris
Crossman.
The center also employs a certi-
fied trainer to help set up exer-
cise programs, offer guidance on
using the equipment and to help
patrons with any questions they
might have.

can get pretty much the same
kind of workout we have a full
line of strength, cardio and free

Crossman.

convenient for me and I don't
have to find someone to watch my
son while I work out. I can bring
him with me. I can't exercise at

"Fitness is a good thing for

available about how a sedentary
lifestyle is bad for you. So we're
trying to counter that and pro-

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

MARRIAGE/PERSONAL GROWTH

Observing All Saints Day

By Chaplain (It.) Thomas Bingol

Our recent All Saints Sunday was
a time of special reflection. As we
looked around our chapel, our base
and our community -we saw a unique
identity. We belong to the communion of
all the saints, both those living around us
and those who have gone before us.
We say that we are "Simul justus et pec-
cator" at the same time both saint and
sinner.
Some might ask, "What do you mean
Chaplain, how can we be both at the same
time." The answer comes from the under-
standing that we do not reach perfection in
this lifetime.
On this past All Saints Sunday, we gath-
ered in the NAS Jax All Saints Chapel to
remember that the church is larger than
what we see. We are a part of what Martin
Luther called, "The Church Militant," the
church on earth, of the people who still
fight the good fight of faith.
As we called out the names of our fallen
shipmates who have passed away in the
last year, we lit a candle for each:
MM2 Michael Barberio of Transient
Personnel Unit; AN Kevon Beccelles
and AM1 Roderick Carnes, Jr. of VS-32;
AMCS David Davis of VP-5; HM1 Brenda
Edwards of Naval Hospital Jax; AWCS
Todd Ethington and AW2 Todd Knutson
of VP-16; AO1 Michael Rehkamp of VP-
30; AD1 Keith Rigney of HS-11; ATCS
Jay Schmidt of FRCSE; and ASCS Sidney
Smith, Jr. ofVP-45.
After calling these names, the congrega-
tion lit candles for others who were impor-
tant to them. Whether they passed away
recently or a long time ago, there is some-
thing special about calling a name, tolling
a bell, and lighting a candle. It brings the
person back to the forefront of our memory.
We are a collection of people from all
corners of the globe and from many dif-
fering traditions. On this celebration of
All Saints Sunday, a moment of silence
was offered for all our shipmates who are
grieving. I want to close with words of com-
fort from Revelation 7, which wonderfully
encourages us.
Verse 9: After this I looked, and there
was a great multitude that no one could

count, from every nation, from all tribes
and peoples and languages, standing before
the throne and before the Lamb, robed in
white, with palm branches in their hands.
Verse 10: They cried out in a loud voice,
saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who
is seated on the throne, and to the L.iml'
Verse 13: Then one of the elders
addressed me, saying, "Who are these,
robed in white, and where have they come
from?"
Verse 14: I said to him, "Sir, you are
the one that knows." Then he said to me,
"These are they who have come out of the
great ordeal; they have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the
Lamb.
Verse 15: For this reason they are before
the throne of God, and worship him day
and night within his temple, and the one
who is seated on the throne will shelter
them.
Verse 16: They will hunger no more,
and thirst no more; the sun will not strike
them, nor any scorching heat.
Verse 17: For the Lamb at the center of
the throne will be their shepherd, and he
will guide them to springs of the water of
life, and God will wipe away every tear
from their eyes."

Spotlight shines on perioperative nurses

By Lt. Cmdr. Kimberly Taylor ronment of patient care.
NH Jacksonville Surgical Services Trnoedrl11 nronvidr ~ intrnictinn

heavily sedated surgical
patients usually do not
have the opportunity to
thank the masked nurses who
care for them when undergoing
surgical procedures in the oper-
ating room. In fact, they may
never recall the names of those
individuals, but it is these dedi-
cated perioperative nurses who
help ensure patients receive the
highest quality care in a safe
environment.
To recognize the extraordinary
contributions of these highly
skilled health care professionals,
Naval Hospital Jacksonville is cel-
ebrating National Perioperative
Nurses Week Nov. 9-15.
Perioperative nursing is a
subspecialty responsible for the
management of care for patients
undergoing surgical procedures.
The nursing role in the operating
room is collaborative.
Working closely with a multidis-
ciplinary team of surgeons, anes-
thesia providers, surgical tech-
nologist and others helps ensure
the best care for the patient.
These specialized nurses act
as patient advocates and serve
as their "voice" when the patient
is anesthetized in the operating
room. They continually assess
the patient's condition before,

during and after the procedure to
detect any changes in their health
status.
There are currently 13 periop-

erative nurses assigned to NH
Jax, the home of one of two Navy
perioperative nurse training pro-
grams.

Program Director Cmdr. Gene
Truesdell said, "Through the
teaching of evidence-based prac-
tice, we are ensuring a safer envi-

and guidance to five perioperative
nursing students.
"Perioperative nursing is an
exciting, dynamic and ever-chang-
ing technological
field that promotes a challeng-
ing learning experience on a daily
basis," he said. His students con-
sider multidisciplinary teamwork
to be the number one reason they
were drawn to the field.
Susan Banschbach, regis-
tered nurse and President for
the Association of periOperative
Registered Nurses (AORN) is
excited when looking to the future
of the profession.
Whether it be safely adminis-
tering medications, ensuring the
correct site for surgery, or reduc-
ing errors, patient safety is the
cornerstone of the profession.
She said, "We have the power
to impact the future of safe care,
which is of vital importance to all
of us and our patients."
NH Jax has many unsung
heroes who work behind the
scenes to provide the military
community stellar healthcare.
By recognizing the contribu-
tions of these compassionate and
caring perioperative nurses, the
hospital staff acknowledges the
vital role these professionals play
in delivering the highest quality
of care to all its surgical patients.

Information (CHINFO)

In preparation for the
Dec. 6 Army-Navy
football game at
Lincoln Financial Field in
Philadelphia, CBS Sports
is soliciting "Beat Army"
spirit spots to be aired dur-
ing the national broadcast.
This is an exciting
opportunity for Sailors
and Marines from NAS
Jacksonville and its tenant
commands to display their
team spirit before millions
of Americans.
Past experience shows
that submissions most like-
ly to be televised are those
exhibiting
humor and creativity
instead of the generic "Go
Navy -Beat Army" shout-
outs.
Follow these require-
ments:
Each spot must include
the submitting command's
name and location.
Avoid use of Navy jar-
gon or acronyms.
Spots should be edit-
ed to 15 or 30 seconds in
length.
Spots should be broad-
cast quality in one of the
following formats: Betacam

Great American Smokeout

Nov. 19- 21

By Danny Woodard
NH Jax Tobacco Cessation Program Manager

A mericans just finished another presidential election
and the campaign theme from both political parties
was "change."
Change seems to be the catch phrase nowadays. I heard
a TV minister recently say, "We all want change, but
nobody wants to change." If you are a smoker or other
tobacco user, the Great American Smokeout is your time to
change.
The Naval Hospital Jax Wellness Center Tobacco
Cessation Program invites you to celebrate the Great
American Smokeout at the following locations:
Wed., Nov.19 VP-30
Thurs., Nov. 20 NAS Jax Commissary
Friday, Nov. 21 HS-7
There are 46 million American smokers who can make
a change on Nov. 20 to give themselves a longer, healthier
life.
Tobacco cessation involves a process of change. Taking a
medication to quit is just part of that process. The person's
willingness to make lifestyle and behavior changes is the
key for permanent abstinence. Every year 70 percent of
American smokers say they want to quit, 35 percent quit
for one day, and less than 10 percent quit permanently.
Why so few? The human tendency is to take path of least
resistance. There is no "magic bullet" that will permanent-
ly "fix you." If you are taking cessation medications such
as Chantix, Zyban, or nicotine replacement, you still have
to make other changes. Education, honesty and patience
are important during this process. Getting support is also
vital during cessation.
Cigarette smoking is by far the number one weapon
of mass destruction around the world. Over five million
people die from smoking annually and the numbers are
increasing.
A new trend today is smoking cigars. Cigar smoke con-
tains up to 400 milligrams of nicotine and 30 times the
amount of carbon monoxide than from one cigarette! Cigar
or pipe smoking is not an alternative to cigarette smoking.
Carbon monoxide intake from tobacco smoke is directly
related to heart disease in smokers.
The top three killers of smokers are lung cancer, heart
disease and emphysema. Emphysema the number one
premature killer of smokers over the age of 50. There is
no cure for any of these diseases. Too many smokers wait
until one of these devastating diseases strikes them before
they even attempt to quit.
Smoking a drug is the fastest, most intensive way to use
a drug. Smoking nicotine is more addictive then smoking
crack cocaine. Ironically, most illicit drug users also smoke
cigarettes and actually have a harder time quitting smok-
ing then their drug of choice.
The NH Jax Wellness Center's tobacco cessation program
is here for you. Use your military benefits now because
research shows time and time again that tobacco users
who attend a cessation program have a 40 percent success
rate compared to quitting alone or just using medication.
As the minister said, "We all want change, but nobody
wants to change!" Make this year's smokeout your time to
change.
Stop by Naval Hospital Jax Wellness Center for Tobacco
Cessation Program information, carbon monoxide checks
and more. For information on the tobacco cessation pro-
gram, call 542-9228 or email danny.woodard@med.navy.

one day a week. We always appreciate monetary gifts -- but your
time is the most precious gift of all. Being a team leader means a lot
to a young child. If not a team leader, be a presenter to share your
special skills with children. Contact Aubrey Smith at 504-6182.
Mentors needed
The Children's Home Society seeks volunteers to become mentors
to children ages 4 to 15 who have a parent incarcerated in prison.
Call 493-7747.
Feed the homeless
The I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless serves more than
1,000 meals every day of the year. These meals are prepared
and served with the help of over 100 civic, religious and business
organizations. Serving meals is a fun and feel-good way to give back
to the community. Call 394-1356.

Are you eligible for an

interest rate reduction?

By Lt.j.g. Ryan Charles
Special Contributor

Service members paying interest
rates in excess of 6 percent per year
may be entitled to relief under fed-
eral law.
Section 527 of the Service Member's Civil
Relief Act (SCRA) provides that "an obli-
gation or liability bearing interest at a
rate in excess of 6 percent per year that
is incurred by a service member, or the
service member and the service member's
spouse jointly, before the service member
enters military service shall not bear inter-
est at a rate in excess of 6 percent per year
during the period of military service."
This means that if you incurred a debt
in the form of a mortgage, car loan, credit
card balance, or just about any other finan-
cial liability, prior to entering military ser-
vice, you may be entitled to reduce your
interest payments to 6% during the entire
period of active duty service. Please note
that the reduction does not apply to feder-
ally guaranteed student loans.
A service member intending to invoke
the 6 percent interest rate cap must com-
ply with the SCRA's notification proce-
dures. The service member must provide
the creditor with written notice and a copy
of the military orders calling the service
member to military service. Generally,
the written notice should be a letter to the
creditor setting forth: (1) the basis of the
service member's qualification for the 6
percent interest cap, (that the debt giving
rise to the interest payment was incurred
before the service member went on active
duty); and (2) a request that the creditor
reduce the service member's interest rate
to 6 percent pursuant to the SCRA. The
military orders must show that the service
member was called to military service after
the debt or obligation was incurred.
A court may grant a creditor relief from
the interest rate reduction if the creditor
can show that the service member's ability
to pay interest in excess of 6 percent is not
materially affected by reason of the service
member's military service. However, the
burden is on the creditor to prove that this
is the case. Still, it is a good idea for the
service member to include a statement in
the written notice to the creditor that his
or her ability to pay interest in excess of 6
percent has been "materially affected" by
reason of entry into military service.

The SCRA imposes a timeline within
which requests for interest rate reductions
must be submitted. The service member
has 180 days after termination or release
from military service to submit written
notice to the creditor. This means that
the interest rate reduction applies retro-
actively where a service member has been
paying interest in excess of 6 percent after
being called to military service. The credi-
tor should account for any interest pay-
ment in excess of 6 percent made by a ser-
vice member since the date of active duty.
However, it is preferable to provide written
notice as soon as possible after being called
to active duty in order to avoid disputes
with creditors and complications in calcu-
lating over interest payments. Also, it is
the service member's obligation to inform a
creditor if military service is subsequently
terminated. Otherwise, the former service
member is liable for any interest forgiven
by the creditor after being released from
military service.
The SCRA mandates that interest in
excess of 6 percent is "forgiven," and can-
not simply be deferred until the period
of military service ends. Also, the SCRA
broadly defines "interest" to include ser-
vice charges, renewal charges, fees, or any
other charges, except bona fide insurance.
This protects service members from credi-
tors trying to cleverly disguise the forgiven
interest as "legitimate" charges and fees.
Moreover, the SCRA forbids creditors from
taking adverse action against a service
member's credit report for requesting an
interest rate reduction pursuant to the
SCRA.
Remember, the interest rate reduc-
tion does not apply to debt incurred by a
spouse alone. As a second practice point,
some creditors are willing to lower inter-
est rates below 6 percent for pre-military
debt. Therefore, service members should
contact each individual creditor to find out
its policy before sending written notice and
locking in the 6 percent cap. As a final
word of caution, debts incurred by a service
member after entering military service are
not subject to the 6 percent interest cap.
If you believe you might qualify for an
interest rate reduction, contact a legal
assistance attorney at: NAS Jacksonville

(904) 270-5445 ext. 3017. This article is

Golf Joe Carreiro utilized
the red and white courses
to present 18 challeng-

comprised of four players
each. "It's a shotgun start,
meaning that they 'spray
out' among all 18 holes to
begin the tournament," said
Carreiro.
The foursomes hit their
first drives about 1 p.m.
and finished their rounds
about 5 p.m. at Mulligan's

Dance

your

way

to fit

By QM2 Nicole Soto
Assistant Editor

N AS Jacksonville
Fitness Center is at
it again. Bringing
the hippest and most up
to date fitness programs
to our installation. The
fitness center now offers
the Zumba Fitness, a
new workout craze that
combines pulsating Latin
rhythms with fun-to-follow
dance moves.
Every Wed. at 11:15 a.m.
and Thurs. at 4:15 p.m.,
Cecille "CeCe" Hartsell
enthusiastically leads the
Zumba Fitness class.
"This class is great
way to stay in shape and
have fun. I was surprised
at how grueling of work-
out it really was," said
IT2 Theresa Robles of the
NAS Jacksonville Security
Manager office.
Zumba Fitness, founded
by celebrity fitness trainer
and choreographer Alberto
Perez, features interval
training sessions with fast
and slow rhythms. Various
styles of Latin dance are
incorporated including,
cumbia, meringue, salsa,
reggae ton, and flamenco.
The class lasts an hour
and is an excellent aerobic
workout. The goal of Zumba
is to have fun as you regain
or keep your shape.
If you're looking for a new
way to get in shape or catch
a Zumba class at the fitness
center. All you have to lose
are some pounds and a lit-
tle sweat.

Photos by QM2 Nicole Soto
Hilda Simmons watches the other students as she learns the
unique rhythms of Zumba. There were lots of smiles and per-
speration throughout the class.

Lisa Starks worked
hard to keep up while
learning new dance moves
in the Zumba Fitness class.
