Adm. Andrew McFall greets USO icon Bob Hope during the Aircrewmen Celebration at NAS Jacksonville in March
1944. Master of the one-liner, Hope was the first USO "Ambassador of Good Will." Hope's USO career spanned six
decades, during which he headlined approximately 60 tours to entertain Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and Marines.
Why I'm glad that summer is almost over
By Sarah Smiley
Special Contributor If -- iTi E-- .a. a -i
The summer began with so
much promise. At our old
house in Pensacola, we could
not have had a better setup. Right
next door was a boy whose age fell
exactly between our sons, Ford and
Owen.
The three of them spent hours run-
ning back and forth between houses,
usually with wooden toy muskets,
baseball bats and other "weapons"
in their hands. They turned our
driveways into racetracks and the
"Millennium Falcon."
They played football in the yard
until it was nighttime. And when
the weather got hot or the boys were
bored, they would even entertain their
youngest brothers inside the house by
making them criminals who needed to
be followed and spied on.
Oh, what a beautiful setup I had in
Pensacola. Although it might seem
counterintuitive, having another child
living nearby actually lessens the
chaos in your home and gives you
more time to yourself. Sounds crazy,
I know. So if you haven't experienced
this yet, just trust me.
When searching for a home, your
first priority should always be to find
a house within close proximity to any
children the same gender and age as
yours.
Believe me, aside from the occa-
sional baseball hitting the side of your
car, having a friend next door for your
children to play with is a beautiful
M ORF TH E $ 0MEFRONT
thing.
I know all this because since we
moved (Just one week into the sum-
mer thanks, Uncle Sam!) we are
without my sons' best bud next door,
and I'm paying for it. You can only
hear "Mom, we're 1Ini-'I so many
times before you want to poke your
eye out with the Darth Vader figu-
rine's light saber.
Owen, 5, who has taken an inter-
est in learning how to read (and will
begin kindergarten in September), fig-
ured out how to spell "R2-D2" before
learning how to recognize his own last
name.
He recently demonstrated his
emerging math abilities when he told
me, "If a storm trooper comes in the
package with two helmets but we
lose one then the storm trooper only
has one helmet left."
Ah, but there is hope. Summer is
quickly coming to an end and soon the
boys will be back in school. I couldn't
be happier because:
No one knows where the lost
storm trooper helmet is, but I sus-
pect it has gone to the same place
as the lost swim goggles, the dice to
Parcheesi, and the baby's half-eaten
granola bar.
Ford, 7, still can't tie his shoes.
If the boys get out of their paja-
mas by 10 a.m., I think something is
wrong.
HEY, MONEYMAN!.
Hey, MoneyMan!
My wife is always on my case about credit cards. She
says we have too many and I spent too much money on
things we don't need.
I say everybody has credit
cards and since we are always
able to pay our credit card bill,
we are not in trouble. In fact, I
heard that having credit cards
helps your credit score. What can
I tell my wife to get her off my
back? We make enough money
and I think we are doing fine.
MoneyMan Sez:
Credit cards are fine as long
as you control your spending
and not spend money you do not
have. Are you carrying a balance
on your credit cards? Are you
charging more each month than
you are paying off each month? -
Are you spending money on
needs instead of wants?
According to a recent article found on the "Dollar
Stretcher" Web site, here are a few signs that may indi-
cate you need to watch your credit card spending:
You can only see so many juvenile
movies at the theater because they
are about 90 minutes longer than
they should be and I spend about $50
at the snack bar.
Ford is getting very good at
making sounds like Chewbacca
(or "Chewie", as he's known by his
friends).
Visiting amusement parks and
fairs always sounds like a good idea
- until you get there. Watching a silly
magic show at an amusement park
makes seeing a kid movie at the the-
ater seem like a great idea.
A long time ago (back in May) I
remember having a life of my own,
even if it was only for six hours a day.
A long time ago, I was able to fin-
ish my column, do the laundry, make
the boys get out of their pajamas, eat
lunch without having to stop to put C-
3PO's leg back on and get the wooden
toy musket away from the baby.
Our baby Lindell's first words this
summer were "SpongeBob" and "uh-
oh."
I am beginning to think that things
like SpongeBob, kid movies, magic
shows, amusement parks, and C-3PO
are kind of funny.
And the number one reason I'm glad
summer is about to end:
Yesterday, while alone in my car,
I caught myself practicing my own
Chewbacca noises.
Your credit card balances are rising while your income
is decreasing.
You are only paying the minimum payment on each of
your cards.
You are perilously near
the limit on each of your credit
cards.
You are working overtime
to keep up with your credit card
payments.
You don't know how much
you owe and really don't want to
find out.
Your credit cards are no lon-
ger used for the sake of conve-
| nience, but because you do not
01 have the money.
You sign up for every cred-
it card offer that comes in the
mail.
Got credit card problems? Go
to NMCRS, the FFSC financial
counselor, your credit union or bank to get help.
Getting your spending and the excessive use of credit
cards under control is not hard, but the first step asking
for help is usually the hardest. So, do it and do it now!
A Samaritan walks among us
I want to send a heart felt "thank you" to the gentle-
man who returned my wallet to the NAS Jax swim-
ming pool attendant on Aug. 4.
Everything in my life was in that wallet. He was also
kind enough to return it with everything, including the
money.
There are not a lot of people with that kind of charac-
ter left in this world. So, again, I sincerely thank you.
I wish you would leave your name at the pool desk so I
could thank you in person.

IN MEMORIAL
Memorial service was held Aug. 6 at the NAS Jax
All Saints Chapel for AWCS(AW/NAC) Sidney
Smith, 36, of VP-45 who passed away Aug. 2.
Smith joined the United States Navy Sept. 5, 1990 and
attended recruit basic military training at RTC Orlando.
Upon graduating boot camp in November 1990, he pro-
ceeded to Pensacola for Naval Aircrewman Candidate
School. In March 1991, he transferred to NTTC Millington,
Tenn. for specialized training as an aviation warfare
systems operator. He then reported to VP-30 at NAS
Jacksonville for initial training as an acoustic sensor oper-
ator aboard the P-3C Orion.
Upon graduating at VP-30 in March 1992, Smith report-
ed to VP-11 at NAS Brunswick, Maine. During his tour
in VP-11 Smith qualified as an acoustic sensor operator,
advanced to the rank of petty officer second class and
served as a squadron instructor.
His next tour took him to the Commander, Patrol and
Reconnaissance Wing Eleven Anti-Submarine Warfare
Operations Center at NAS Jacksonville. While there, he
served as an analysis watch supervisor and qualified as
a Level 1 analyst. His analytical and technical expertise
were highly sought after and led the way in the fleet-wide
introduction of extended echo ranging.
In December 1999, Smith reported to VP-45 at NAS
Jacksonville where he quickly re-qualified as an acoustic
sensor operator and squadron instructor and advanced
to the rank of petty officer first class. His other duties
included command task group assistant operations officer
as well as the AW Division and Operations Department
leading petty officer.
Smith then reported to VP-30 as an instructor in March
2004 where he
served as the lead-
ing petty officer of
VP-30's observer
training track ,'. U .
and successfully
trained several
hundred future
P-3 aircrewmen.
Additionally, he
served on the
Fleet NATOPS
Evaluation Team
and played an
integral part
in standing up

Maritime Aircraft slt
department. In
September 2005,
Smith was selected AWCS(AW/NAC) Sidney Smith
to the rank of chief
petty officer and served out his tour at VP-30 as the AW
training track leading chief.
After an extremely successful tour at VP-30, Smith
returned to VP-45 in November 2006, where he served as
the leading chief in the AW Division and Operations and
Warfare Development Departments. In May 2008, Smith
was advanced to senior chief petty officer.
During his 18 years of service he accumulated more than
3,300 mishap-free flight hours aboard the Lockheed P-3
Orion aircraft. He was a veteran of the Cold War, Desert
Shield, Desert Storm, Kosovo Campaign, Operations
Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
He is survived by his wife, Sonia Smith of Lafayette, La.;

Executive Director, Greater Jacksonville Area USO
As you may already be aware from
media coverage, the Greater
Jacksonville Area USO is strug-
gling to stay afloat financially. When peo-
ple ask me what the USO does, I usu-
ally just recite our mission statement.
But those words don't adequately describe
what we do because it changes from one
day to the next -from one
Soldier to the next Sailor, l I
from one Airman to the next
Marine. _
We have received many 9
calls from both active duty and retired ser-
vice members and family members asking
how they can help. You can help by writing
letters explaining what the USO means
to you or describe a situation where the
USO truly enhanced the quality of your
life. These letters and stories will be used
to assist us in educating our community
on the impact we have in the lives of our
local community. Here's my story of how
the USO came to the rescue of a military
family.
In 1991, a young lieutenant and her
three toddlers had to be evacuated from
the Philippines following the eruption of
Mt. Pinatubo.
Their wild journey encompassed two
days and nights on a U.S. Naval vessel,
one hot, insect-infested night on cots in
an open air tent on the island of Cebu,
and another night in a stranger's home on
SGuam. They finally arrived in
the states, but they were still
not at home.
Out of food, out of diapers,
and completely exhausted
from the experience they were left to their
own devices to figure out where to go next
and how to get there.
They felt very alone until they walked
into the welcoming arms of the volunteers
at the USO Airport Center in Seattle.
The USO provided for their every need,
and sent them on their way, re-supplied,

Who will get your SGLI payout?
By Lt.j.g.
William Bloomfield
Special Contributor
Most service mem-
bers have at least
one significant
asset at the time of their
death: their Service mem-
bers Group Life Insurance
(SGLI) policy.
The majority of service
members who elect cover-
age opt for the full $400,000
amount, but a smaller
payout may be selected to
reduce monthly premiums.
Additional coverage, on the
other hand, is available
through the family SGLI
option. Unfortunately,
you can't take the money
with you, but you can con-
trol who gets paid. What
you do- or don't do when
you fill out the designation
worksheet will determine
who your beneficiaries (the
people who receive the pro-
ceeds from the insurance on
your life) will be.
Service members should
update their SGLI benefi-
ciary information regularly,
especially after a signifi-
cant life event such as mar-
riage, birth, or divorce. If
you don't keep a check on
your beneficiary designa-
tion form, your SGLI pro-
ceeds may go to the wrong
person, may be divided in
incorrect amounts, or may
be paid in a manner you
didn't intend. The following
example (with names cour-
tesy of Bill Shakespeare)
illustrates the point.
HM3 Portia hast-
ily marries Cpl. Shylock.
She diligently heads to
the Personnel Support
Detachment (PSD) and
updates her SGLI benefi-
ciary information to name
her new husband Shylock
as the sole principal benefi-
ciary. After a few months,
Portia begins to notice
some serious character
flaws in Shylock. Portia
concludes that it is in her
best interest to dissolve the
marriage. In the divorce
judgment, Portia's civilian
attorney includes a provi-
sion cutting off Shylock
from all life insurance pro-
ceeds, and specifically say-
ing that Shylock is not to
receive such money.
Relying on this provi-
sion, Portia decides there
is no reason to rush to PSD
to update her SGLI ben-
eficiary information, and
in fact never changes the
names on her form. On the
rebound, Portia marries a
civilian, John Bassanio. On
the honeymoon, however,
Portia tragically slips off
the balcony and falls to her

refreshed, and grateful for

lowing a long and harrow-
ing journey. That young
lieutenant, toddlers in her
arms, was me.
That experience inspired
my effort to establish the

is my inspiration to make
your USO the best it can
be.
Now, please tell me your

death. Following the funer-
al, Bassanio files a claim
as Portia's husband for
the $400,000 in SGLI pro-
ceeds- only to discover that
they have already been paid
out to Shylock. Bassanio
sues Shylock for the pro-
ceeds, based on the provi-
sion of the divorce decree.
The court rules in Shylock's
favor, holding that the ben-
eficiary designation form
trumps the divorce decree.
The outcome may be
different if the insurance
policy at issue is a private
insurance policy, as these
types are governed by state
law. Don't take your chanc-
es on state laws, as they
vary from state to state.
It's better to keep track of
whom you list as your ben-
eficiaries and to quickly
update them as necessary.
Name your SGLI ben-
eficiaries at PSD by using
SGLV Form 8286. Merely
changing your Page 2 and
other personnel files does
NOT update your SGLI
beneficiary designation. For
the sake of those you leave
behind, make sure your real
intentions are on paper.

New England educators tour area bases
By AEC Raymond Derrick

Navy Recruiting
District (NRD)
New England held
an educator orientation
visit July 30-31, at NAS
Jacksonville, NS Mayport
and NSB Kings Bay. The
visit serves as a Navy
awareness tool, ensuring
that educators see first
hand the training, equip-
ment and facilities that
Sailors operate with in
today's Navy.
The group included 17
teachers, counselors and
principals from school dis-
tricts in New York and New
Hampshire, along with sev-
eral Navy recruiters. At NAS
Jax, the visitors were treat-
ed to tours of the Center for
Naval Aviation Technical
Training (CNATTU)
Jacksonville, bachelor enlist-
ed housing, Naval Hospital
Jax and VP-45.
NRD New England offers
these visits about every six
months to show educators
what is available to the
young men and women in
their schools who may be
considering military service
- or who are looking for
career avenues that could
help with obtaining college
education in exchange for

service.
At CNATTU, the group
saw how Sailors use a
combination of classroom,
hands-on and computer-
based training to learn their
rating skills. "The Navy has
already invested thousands
of dollars in a Sailor by the
time he or she arrives on
our doorstep," said Chief
Aviation Electronics Mate
Raymond Derrick. "In devel-
oping our students, we are
more than just instructors.
Sometimes we have to be
dad or mom, financial coun-
selors or advisors on per-
sonal and professional deci-
sions. We work very hard
to give the young Sailors
under our instruction what
they require to excel in their
next duty assignment."
"These visits are a great
way to showcase the oppor-
tunities the Navy provides,"
said Jimmy Tighe, civil-
ian education coordina-
tor with Navy Recruiting
District New England in
Boston. Tighe said competi-
tion between the Air Force,
Army and Marines for qual-
ified recruits is tough. "We
have to really get out there

surprised at how well the
room compared to a col-

really gives us a more
detailed look at the Navy
and how it could be a good
fit for our students," said
John Sunderland, a teach-
er at Central New York
Canajoharie High School.
The group toured a P-3
Orion aircraft at VP-45. Lt.
Charles Larwood explained
squadron's patrol recon-
naissance mission and how
the P-3 will be replaced by
the new P-8 Multi-Mission
Maritime Aircraft (based
on the Boeing 737). He
also discussed how today's
Sailors learn skills that will
benefit them whether or
not they decide to make a
career in the Navy.
"The NRD really has done
an excellent job of giving
us a clear picture of Navy
career opportunities," said
School Superintendent Bill
Compton, from Exeter,
N.H. "We've seen a snap-
shot of some ratings that
directly transfer to the civil-
ian world, the benefits of
tuition assistance and the
Navy's emphasis on going
to college. These are great
benefits for our students.
Not every student has the
opportunity to go to college,
so we want to see what is
available to them through
military service."
"My students come from
a rural area in upstate
New York without many
career opportunities," said
Sunderland. "The military
is the only way out for a lot
of them and gives them the
chance to get some training
and education."
During the two-day tour,
the group of educators also
visited USS Simpson (FFG
56) at NS Mayport, and the
Trident Training Facility at
NSB Kings Bay.

The conference fea-

"Getting that information

personal financial manage-

from 17 years in Marine
Corps family programs, and
the Navy is very different.
The services perspective
has improved, making it
more beneficial to families.
Individual augmentees had
a lot to do with the Navy's
wider perspective on fam-
ily dynamics. We are now
much better equipped."
Alice Bellafiore, accredi-

CNIC, took the mystery out
of accreditation for the con-
ference attendees with her
presentation.
"Some of the field staff
are unaware of the process.
They think it's a pass/fail
inspection," said Bellafiore.
"But everything is out in
the open. These are reviews.
These are findings with the
opportunity to achieve full
compliance and be accred-

Bellafiore added that the
goal of accreditation is pro-

the fleet.

About 95 kids aboard NAS Jacksonville participat-
ed in the 22th anniversary of the America's Kids
Run event Friday. The event was sponsored by
Nike and the NAS Jax Morale, Welfare and Recreation
Department.
The 5- and 6-year-olds run one-half mile, 7- and 8-year-
olds run one mile and the 9- to 13-year-olds run two miles
with a finish line reward of an "America's Kids Run T-
Shirt" and a "cool off' from a water hose courtesy of the
base fire department.
"This was really a lot of fun because all the counselors
were at the corners cheering us on. And we got to run
through the water," said 10-year-old Alejandro Sanchez
who came in first in his category and earned himself a toy
prize.
"It was really hard because we had to run a long way,
but we did get to cool off in the water," added 9-year-old
Alex Johnson.
"We hold this event every year during the Summer
Camp Sports Week so they get a feel of all the different
activities they can do to get fit and stay healthy. It's a lot
of fun to bring them out here so they can get sprayed down
afterwards," said Youth Activities Director Megan Elliot.
"It's not a long run so they aren't too tired. And, they can
also take this run and log it into their Fit Factor Program
on the Internet. It's just another way to encourage and
teach them how to stay healthy through exercise."

VISION program gets results at FRCSE
By Frank Taormina
FRCSE Public Affairs Specialist
In separate ceremo-
nies on July 30, Fleet
Readiness Center
Southeast (FRCSE)
Commanding Officer Capt.
Tim Matthews, presented
three FRCSE employees
with VISION awards.
The VISION program
is a beneficial suggestion
program where employees
are encouraged to use their
expertise and new ideas to
improve products and pro-
cesses. The program is suc-
cessful and has proven to be
a win-win for the command
and employees. The mission
is accomplished more effi-
ciently with a positive fiscal
impact and the visioneers
receive a financial award
for their expertise and cre-
ativity.
Kevin Etienne, a pneu-
draulics systems worker,
was recognized for his idea
to reduce material costs for
the F404 Engine Variable
Geometry Fan Actuator
Pistons by developing a
new procedure that allows
virtually all pistons to be
reused. Pistons are polished
utilizing various wet and
dry sanding methods, which
recondition the pistons,
allowing them to be reused
instead of being scrapped.
Kevin Fowler, an aircraft
engine mechanic, was rec-
ognized for the contribution
he made in designing new
tooling to remove the retain-
ing pin used to secure the
bell crank to the Variable
Guide Vane Actuator Shaft
of the TF34-100A engine,
which is used to power the
U. S. Air Force's A-10 air-
craft. This new tool allows
the retaining pin to be

pressed out in a three-step
process utilizing an arbor
press, which prevents the
pin from breaking in the
pin hole. The tool simpli-
fies the task and reduces
the potential for personal
injury. The old method of
driving the pin out with a
hammer and center punch
had a tendency to break the
pin and sometimes damage
the pinhole. The new meth-
od of pressing out the pin
increases the success rate
to 100 percent and saves
time.
Machinist Steve DiPerna
was recognized for reduc-
ing the set-up time for the
Computer Numerically
Controlled Grinder for the
T1 shaft of the J52 engine.
The old method required
the magnetic chuck to be
removed and replaced to
accommodate the center
piece. The new process
eliminates the need to
remove the magnetic chuck
and allows the center piece
to be positioned on the
existing magnetic chuck to
accommodate the T1 shaft
- saving valuable time
$5.5 million in savings and
garnered several awards
for FRCSE. In 2003, the
VISION program received
the Elite 10 Award from
the Center for Suggestion
System Development for
having one of the best
suggestion programs in
the country. FRCSE also
received recognition from
the Naval Air Systems
Command (NAVAIR) as its
Suggestion Program of the
Year for 2003 and 2004.
Brown said, "It's been
a lot of work but also very
rewarding. I look for-
ward to my new job, but
the VISION program will
always be a part of me."
Capt. Matthews said,
"Ralph has done a great job
with the VISION program
and we'll certainly miss the
outstanding work he's done
to improve the program."

without sacrificing compo-
nent quality.
Capt. Matthews stated,
"Through the use of the
VISION Program, artisans
continue to save the facil-
ity money with their sug-
gestions. I thank you and
encourage all of you to keep
up the good work."
Ralph Brown, VISION
program manager for
FRCSE, was on hand for
the presentation of the
awards. In his seven years
on the job, Brown has been
remarkably successful in
revitalizing the VISION
program. When he came
aboard, the turn-around-
time (TAT) for a suggestion
was 200 days. Brown was
able to reduce that time to
an incredible 55 days. The
reduction of the TAT cre-
ated renewed interest on
behalf of the artisans. Since
2001, Brown has processed

Paying for your child's college education can be a
daunting task. Let the Navy Exchange make it
easier for you through its A-OK Student Reward
Program. Four times per school year, four students will
win a drawing for a $5,000, $3,000 $2,000 or $1,000 U.S.
savings bond (denominations at maturity). The next
drawing will be held at the end of August 2008.
Any full-time student who earns a "B" average equiva-
lent or better, as determined by their school system, may
enter the drawing. Eligible students include dependent
children of active duty military members, reservists and
military retirees enrolled in grades 1- 12.
Dependent children without an individual Dependent

to submit their entry. Each student may enter only once
each grading period and must re-enter with each qualify-
ing report card.
To enter the next drawing, stop by the Navy Exchange

NH JAX: Gillingham to take over where Bono leaves off
From Page 1
Iraqi Freedom as the Chief
of Professional Services
(Forward) for the 1st Force
Service Support Group and
Officer in Charge of the
Surgical Shock Trauma
Platoon providing resusci-
tative combat surgical care
during Operation Al Fajr in
November 2005.
Upon his return, he was
instrumental in establish-
ing the Comprehensive
Combat Casualty Care
Center (C-5) to optimize
the coordination of care for
those wounded in the global
war on terrorism.
Gillingham has published
more than 30 scientific arti-
cles and book chapters and
is a frequent presenter at
national professional ortho-
paedic meetings. A diplo-
mat of the American Board
of Orthopaedic Surgery, he
is a fellow of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons and a member of
the Pediatric Orthopaedic
Society of North America,
the Scoliosis Research
Society, American College
of Physician Executives,
Society of Military
Orthopaedic Surgeons and
Association of Military
Surgeons of the United
States.
Bono's first task at Naval
Hospital Jacksonville was
to establish goals for the
hospital focusing on readi-
ness, enhancing patient
care and customer service.
Her mantra became, "Treat
every patient, exactly as
you would like to be treat-
ed, every time."
Under her leadership,
the hospital and its seven
branch health clinics have
met the challenge of high-
tempo operational deploy-
ments in support of the
global war on terrorism
while continuing caring for
patients at home.
At any one time 10-20
percent of Naval Hospital
Jacksonville's person-
nel were on deployment
during her tour here and
that pace continues. They
serve in such locations as
Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait,
Djibouti and Joint Task
Force Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba as well as fleet sup-
port assignments.
Closer to home, Bono
deployed a team to lend aid
to the victims of Hurricane
Katrina in 2005 and a
group of volunteers served
aboard the hospital ship
USNS Comfort to lend aid
ooo
to our neighbors in Latin
America.
Deployment healthcare
isn't just about providing
care abroad. The hospi-
tal also screens deploying
troops for health issues
before deployment and
evaluating them after their
return for any if neces-
sary providing treatment.
Meanwhile, excellent care
is continually available for
the warfighter's families
back home.
"Concern for the health of
a deployed member's spouse
and children shouldn't be
an additional worry for
them on the battlefield,"
Bono said.
Despite some adverse
media coverage in recent
years, Bono said, she has
absolute confidence in the
quality of care the hospi-
tal staff delivers. "I have
always been amazed by the
creativity, courage, compas-
sion and commitment of
my entire staff. I am very
proud of this remarkable
team," she said. "Today,
with lessons learned, I feel
confident that our quality
of care has never been bet-
ter. Together, we have over
the last three years, made
Naval Hospital Jacksonville
a better healthcare facility."
Looking toward what
Gillingham has before him,
she said there will con-
tinue to be challenges but
he will also be on hand to
realize some very positive
progress. \I..iil patient
care and customer service
enhancements coupled with
major facility improve-
ments underway, includ-
ing a $35.8 million surgi-
cal suite addition, promise
a bright new era for Naval
Hospital Jacksonville and
our patients," she said.
Bono said, "I know the
Gillinghams will learn what
special people populate this
command and our Florida-
Georgia community."
Bono will report to the
TRICARE Management
Activity in Washington, DC.
where she says she looks
forward to being able to
play a part in shaping mili-
tary medicine DOD-wide.

surprise, a swim test.
HS-5 hosts middies summer training
By Lt. Allen Langston
HS-5 Public Affairs Officer
The "Nightdippers" of HS-5 hosted three sets of mid-
shipmen from various colleges and universities,
including Georgia Tech, the U.S. Naval Academy
and Jacksonville University. Summer training allows
midshipmen to spend several weeks in different naval
communities and develop a better understanding of the
career paths available to Naval officers. In that regard,
the Nightdippers were not only representing the helicop-
ter community, but the greater Naval aviation commu-
nity as well.
HS-5 worked with several aviation units onboard NAS
Jacksonville so the midshipmen could participate in sev-
eral simulators and aircraft familiarization flights. The
flights included an opportunity to manipulate the con-
trols and fly the helicopter. They also participated in a
P-3C Orion flight. Additionally, they spent time with the
Nightdippers to get a feel for day-to-day life in a helicop-
ter squadron. The highlight of the training culminated on
USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) where two of the three
groups witnessed the pinnacle of Naval aviation, namely,
flight operations at sea.
The midshipmen spent just over a week on two different
carrier qualification detachments aboard the Roosevelt.
It provided a brief glimpse into what life on an aircraft
carrier is all about. In addition, they flew as passengers
on flights to get a better appreciation of the carrier avia-
tion world. Hopefully, the midshipmen gained a greater
appreciation for aviation (especially rotary wing) that will
help them with future decisions they make regarding their
future Naval service.

A SPOUSE'S PERSPECTIVE
Life lessons with Caleb
JAX AIR NEWS, NASJACKSONVILLE, Thursday, August 14, 2008 19
Crenshaw to honor Vietnam
veterans at NS Mayport
By Beth Wilson
Special Contributor
I recently said goodbye
to someone very spe-
cial to me; Caleb. Caleb
lived with me for 13 years.
He was a source of sup-
port, kindness, love and
understanding throughout
our relationship. He chal-
lenged me in many ways,
making me a more patient
and perhaps a less selfish
person.
Caleb helped me know
that my Sailor was 'the
one' for me. He was in our
wedding and was the com-
panion that stood with me
throughout deployment
and workups. On my bluest
days Caleb gave me a rea-
son to get out of bed. And in
my happiest moments (like
homecoming) Caleb was
right beside me.
Caleb is my dog, my pre-
cious, albeit precocious,
cocker spaniel. Some time
ago he started declining,
he developed a thyroid con-
dition, contracted a fun-
gal infection and then we
learned he has cancer. At
15, he was too old for hero-
ic measures. We kept him
comfortable and loved to
the end.
Why am I writing about a
dog in a spouse support col-
umn? Because I am not the
only spouse who has discov-
ered the role a pet can play
in the lives of military fam-
ilies, and yes, because the
sadness is so fresh.
So please indulge me this
little tribute to the furry
child that endured seven
moves in the last five years
(three of them cross-coun-
try), deployments (and
many tears), wearing a silly
doggy-tuxedo at our wed-
ding (such an indignity for
a proud cocker) and was my
faithful companion for 13
years.
Those reading this col-
umn who know me recog-
Beth Wilson
nize the loss this is for me.
My husband and I are an
infertile couple, so by proxy
Caleb became my child as
a single, our child once we
were married.
Caleb went everywhere
with us. Disneyland (where
he is an official member
of the Disneyland Kennel
Club), Dollywood, Six
Flags all across the coun-
try, and Busch Gardens, to
name a few destinations.
Caleb accompanied me to
the commissary, the store,
meetings; patiently waiting
for me in the car (weather
permitting).
Caleb was spoiled. He
slept with us, consumed
as much 'people food' as
dog food (ice cream was a
particular favorite), loved
car rides and playing with
'daddy.'
He also endured scarves,
outfits at Christmas, the
Fourth of July and home-
coming (a sailor suit). And
he tolerated riding in a
'trolley' to accompany us on
bike rides.
Caleb taught me a lot.
In his early days he was a
royal pain! He consumed a
two-pound box of chocolate
covered cherries requiring a
trip to the vet for his stom-
ach to be pumped. He was
quite a jumper move over
Michael Jordon.
One evening he displayed
his talent with a beautiful
'air Jordan' securing the
ham just pulled from the
oven. He helped himself
to the pizza that was to be
served to my godson's birth-
day party guests.
Upon returning from call-
ing the children inside for
pizza I discovered my ped-
igreed 'mutt' on the table
devouring the pizza.
I decided then he was
going. But this voice inside
said, "Oh no you're not.
You're just angry. You are
going to keep this dog and
learn to discipline him, and
yourself."
That began what I call
my 'Life Lessons from the
Doghouse" season of life.
Through Caleb I discovered
I was selfish.
I hated when Caleb's
needs were 'inconvenient'
for me why can't you walk
yourself? Do you really need
fed this very moment? Why
are you so inflexible with
your schedule? Caleb's pres-
ence in my life built many
things in me. Death to self-
ishness was only the first.
Patience and persever-
ance followed. Caleb was
a 'stud' dog prior to com-
ing to me. I did not know
stud dogs are not 'trained'
as it makes them somewhat
less aggressive in mating.
Great! I had a stud with a
'tude!
It took a little longer to
train him to sit, stay, lie
down, get down, and many
other commands. I had to
give up my timeframe for
accomplishment and work
with Caleb, but not give up.
Caleb was a Houdini is
fur. He could escape from
the seemingly most secure
fence. Each time he escaped
my frantic heart regretted
every idle threat uttered.
Only old age curtailed his
'wondering ways.'
Caleb, you were my baby,
my friend, my faithful com-
panion. Thank you for being
patient with me and endur-
ing me. Thank you for the
love and joy you brought, I
hope you received as much
in return. Rest now, my
precious Caleb.
Stopping skin cancer starts with children
Teach good habits early on
From the Skin Cancer Foundation
Children should be taught from an
early age to be careful about sun
exposure and the need to use sun
protection. Parents can teach their chil-
dren sun-protection techniques that will
help prevent skin cancer throughout their
lives.
"Skin cancer rates in the United States
are increasing at epidemic
levels. One in 55 people will
be diagnosed with melanoma,
the deadliest form of skin
cancer, during their lifetime.
This is particularly important r
for children because one blis- -
tering sunburn in childhood
more than doubles a person's
chances of developing mela-
noma later in life," said Perry
Robins, MD, president of the I
Skin Cancer Foundation.
The vast majority of skin
cancers are preventable with
good sun protection habits.
The Foundation recom- "
mends the following methods /..
of protection for different age
groups.
Babies
An infant's skin possesses little melanin,
the pigment that gives color to skin, hair
and eyes and provides some sun protection.
Therefore, babies are especially susceptible
to the sun's damaging effects. Babies under
six months of age should be kept out of the
sun. Follow these tips for babies older
than six months:
*Take walks early in the morning or late
afternoon and use a stroller with a sun-
protective cover.
*Make sure babies are covered up with
clothes. (Long-sleeved un-bleached cot-
ton clothing is cool and comfortable, while
also highly protective). Clothing with an
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) list-
ing on the label offers extra security. UPF
is similar to the SPF for sunscreen, and
the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends
UPFs of 30 or higher for superior protec-
tion.
*Choose a wide-brimmed hat or bonnet
that protects the baby's face, neck, and
ooo
ears. A baby who wears a hat during the
first few months will get used to having it
on.
Sunglasses are not very practical for a
young baby. To protect your baby's eyes,
seek the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
*Apply a broad-spectrum, SPF 15+ sun-
screen to areas left uncovered such as
baby's hands.
*Shield the baby from direct
sunlight coming in through
the windows of your car.
Toddlers and school-age
children
For toddlers, it's important
to educate not only your child,
S/ but caregivers as well.
-u *Make sure your child seeks
shade between 10 a.m. and
4 p.m. Check the outdoor
)d area where your child plays to
make sure there is adequate
shade.
*An SPF 15+ sunscreen
should be applied every morn-
ing, 30 minutes before leaving
the house. Keep sunscreen in
',.' the bathroom where children
brush their teeth, and eventu-
ally it will become routine.
*Two tablespoons (one ounce) of sun-
screen must be applied every two hours
and more often if your child is swimming
or sweating.
Children should wear sun-protective
clothing whenever possible -- including
shirts, hats and sunglasses -- for protec-
tion against ultraviolet radiation. Make
sure your child wears a wide-brimmed hat,
long-sleeved shirt and pants during pro-
longed periods in the sun.
The mission of the Foundation is
to decrease the incidence of skin cancer
through public and professional education
and research.

cancer.org.

Congressman Ander Crenshaw
(R-Fla.) announced he will again
recognize the contributions of
Vietnam War veterans living in the
4th Congressional District of Florida
by presenting them with certificates of
Special Congressional Recognition in
honor of their service to our country.
The 2007 ceremony acknowledged 269
veterans. This year's recognition cer-
emony will be Nov. 7 at NS Mayport. To
participate, eligible veterans must regis-
ter before Oct. 3.
"Vietnam veterans served our coun-
try with honor during one of our most
tumultuous times as a nation," said
Crenshaw. "They answered the call of
duty, but when they returned home,
many did not receive the recognition
they properly deserved. These brave
individuals helped fight for freedom and
democracy at a time when their country
needed them this ceremony will show
our appreciation."
Members of the armed forces who were
awarded either the Vietnam Service
Medal or the Vietnam Campaign Medal
are eligible for the recognition. The
Vietnam Service Medal was awarded
to those who served in Vietnam and
its contiguous waters and airspace
between July 3, 1965 and March 28,
1973. In addition, personnel serving in
Thailand, Laos or Cambodia in direct
support of operations in Vietnam dur-
ing the same time period are also eli-
gible for the medal. Armed Forces mem-
bers who qualified for the Armed Forces
Expeditionary Medal by service in
Vietnam between July 1, 1958 and July
3, 1965 will also be recognized.
The Vietnam Campaign Medal was
awarded to those who served for six
months in South Vietnam during the
period March 1, 1961 to March 28, 1973
or served outside the geographical limits
of South Vietnam and contributed direct
combat support to the RVN armed forces
for an aggregate of six months.
Criteria for both medals are set by the
Department of Defense and recipients
should have the medal listed on their
DD-214s. If you are a Vietnam veteran
and were eligible to receive either the
Vietnam Service Medal or the Vietnam
Campaign Medal and live in the 4th
Congressional District, please contact
Crenshaw's offices at (904) 598-0481 or
(386) 365-3316 or go to http://crenshaw.
house.gov/ to obtain an application.

My favorite game is FAdjlji_-1 iLI. I, as well as most people, do not enjoy playing all of the games
some car dealers do, when trying to purchase a vehicle. I would like to invite you to visit my favorite
dealer, where you do not need a magnifying glass to read the fine print, be a lawyer, or an accountant,
S" | to understand their ad. The price advertised, is the price your pay, including everything, all taxes, fees
and tag... DRIVE OUT!
