Honoring those who served
Fleet Public Affairs Center, Detachment Southeast .
In recognition of fallen heroes from
World War I to the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, members of all military
branches and their families paid hom-
age at the Veterans Memorial Wall in
Jacksonville Monday during the annual
Memorial Day event.
"This ceremony is for those who have
passed and given their lives for freedom-
but every time we gather on this special
day, it shows that we are united in our
efforts to protect our country, day in and
day out," said Rear Adm. Michael Vitale,
commander Navy Region Southeast.
The names of four military members who
lost their lives while serving their country
were added to the wall last week. Family
and friends of Army Sgt. Darren Patrick
Hubbell Sr., 38; Army Spc. Jeremiah
Chaim Hughes, 26; Army Spc. Donald
Valentine III, 21; and AM1 Roderick "Rory"
Charles Carnes Jr., 35, were recognized
during the ceremony.
Veterans, community leaders and resi-
dents expressed their gratitude for the
sacrifices the men made for their country
in the war on terrorism.
"Jacksonville's Memorial Wall is a spe-
cial place for civilians and members of the
military to come and pay their respects to
those who paid that ultimate price for us to
live free in this great country," said Vitale.

'Critical Days
of Summer'
By April Phillips
Naval Safety Center Public Affairs
T he Naval Safety Center launched
its "Critical Days of Summer"
campaign during Memorial Day
weekend to help Sailors and Marines
prepare for a season where the inci-
dence of accidents and injuries typi-
cally increases.
Memorial Day weekend is a chance
for Sailors and Marines to join the rest
of the nation in honoring the brave men
and women who have made the ulti-
mate sacrifice for our freedom. It is also
celebrated as the unofficial beginning
of summer. The types of incidents that
occur during summer may seem uncon-
nected, but statistics show they create
a negative trend shared by all services-
the comparatively high toll of off-duty
and recreational mishaps.
To reverse that trend, the Naval
Safety Center (NSC) shed light on
some of the most hazardous activities,
along with -u-.-.--iiini for staying safe
through the summer.
"I encourage everyone to go out and
have a good time this summer, doing
everything possible to ensure that their
good time does not turn tragic with a
preventable mishap," said Rear Adm.
Arthur Johnson, commander, Naval
Safety Center.
With kids out of school, many military
families pile into the family car and hit
the road for vacations. The added traf-
fic volume increases the risk for acci-
dents. During the 2007 Critical Days,
11 Sailors and nine Marines died in
vehicle mishaps. Another three Sailors
and 10 Marines died on motorcycles
and four Sailors and three Marines per-
ished in off-duty/recreational mishaps.
These numbers are down from the
summer of 2006, but still unacceptable,
according to Johnson.
"In the past five years, the three
months with the most off-duty and rec-
reational fatalities are June, July and
August," said Ed Hobbs, head of NSC
Statistics and Mathematics directorate.
"Not surprisingly, these are the three
full months of the critical days of sum-
mer. Fleet readiness depends on train-
ing and education keeping pace with
the needs of Sailors and Marines."
The NSC's goal is to give local com-
mands a comprehensive safety cam-
paign focusing on risk management
initiatives to prevent the fatalities and
injuries associated with the critical
days. Key to this campaign is a media
kit with posters, presentations and web
resources. Digital versions of the con-
tents will be available for download
on the Safety Center's Web site, www.
safetycenter.navy.mil. Also, the Web
site home page will feature informative
articles spotlighting a different sum-
mertime hazard each week.
Johnson added, "Sailors, Marines and
civilian personnel are invaluable to our
Navy-Marine Corps team, so our num-
ber one priority remains sustaining
individual personal readiness, while
still enjoying summer."

sonal/criticaldays to download the keys
to a successful summer season. For

Honoring astronauts
By Sarah Smiley
Special Contributor
We were visiting the Space
Center just south of
Houston, Texas, and adja-
cent to Johnson Space Center, so I
envisioned something, well, some-
thing out of this world. I thought we'd
see plasma televisions, computers,
and lighting like we've never wit-
nessed before. I thought the building
would be futuristic. I even imagined
it being spherical, although I'm not
sure why.
What we found at the Space Center,
however, was time travel of a different
sort straight to the 1960s.
"It just seem so ordinary," I kept
saying to Dustin.
We boarded a tram that looked like
it had been rescued from Disney's
junk yard (this wasn't the monorail),
and embarked on a tour of the actual
base.
"The tour is one and a half hours,"
the guide said. "And there aren't any
bathrooms."
I looked at Dustin.
"Is that too long?" he asked.
Anything that lasts more than fif-
teen minutes is too long when you
have three children, all under the age
of seven and one of them in diapers
along with you. But I could see that
Dustin was excited as a kid in a toy
shop to be getting on that tram bound
for the real-life space center, so the
five of us piled into a tight row with
cracked plastic seats, and
I hoped that the baby would not
dirty his diaper.
"I'm surprised they don't have a
sophisticated monorail or something,"
I whispered to Dustin. But he wasn't
listening. He and my other three boys
wanted to see rockets and spaceships.
The base looked oddly familiar even
though I had never been there before.
The buildings were plain and square.
Plaques that looked more functional
than they did aesthetic were on the
sides of each building to mark their
fancy address: "Building 2," "Building
3," etc. Evidence of utilities pipes,
wiring, electrical boxes were pep-
pered on the sides of the street and
attached to the buildings like aggres-
sive spaghetti. Steamed billowed out
of holes in the ground. And then I
realized why everything seemed so
familiar: The Johnson Space Center
looked like every other military base
I've ever been to in my life. It was
plain, functional, and lacking all
comforts. It looked like men designed
it. Based solely on first appearances,
you'd never believe a place such as
this could put a man on the moon.
In one of the buildings, we saw
where astronauts train to maneuver in
the International Space Station. Giant
mock-ups were crowded into a hangar
several stories tall. There was even a
simulator of the space shuttle. Now
my kids were really amazed. They
pressed their noses against the glass.
I noticed a man, an employee, down
below, walking between the modules.
He was like a celebrity to us: some-
one who works at the actual space
station! But then, for reasons I don't
know, I began to think about all the
times I went with my Navy dad onto
the aircraft carriers at Norfolk Naval
Base. I have been on almost every
aircraft carrier on the East Coast, and
growing up, my
Online ID card appointments

Appointments for ID cards may be made on
the Internet to avoid the wait associated with
walk in customers. Civilians, retirees and
active duty members can make appointments online
at www.psalant.navy.mil for all types of ID cards.
Appointments are available from 9 a.m. 3 p.m.
daily.
Walk-in customers will continue to be served on a
first come, first served basis Monday through F,'iLii
from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.- however, customers with
appointments have priority.
Active duty military members have head-of-the-line
priority from 7:30 9 a.m. daily.
Appointments can also be cancelled or rescheduled
on the Web site, which also shows when scheduled
outages will occur.
All dependent children are required to have an ID
card when they turn 10 years old. All dependent chil-
dren transferring overseas must have an ID card. If
ID cards are required for more than one dependent,
make individual appointments for each dependent.
ID cards can be reissued 30 45 days prior to cur-
rent expiration date and can be requested by mail
for anyone who is not physically able to travel to the
Personnel Support Detachment (PSD). The request
must include a picture (5x7), a letter from a doctor
stating that the person cannot travel to the PSD and a
copy of the current ID card.
Avoid the wait, make your appointment today!
visits to them were
as insignificant to me as I imagine
trips to an office building might be
for a child whose dad is an accoun-
tant or lawyer. I had climbed ladders
and gangplanks, walked around jets
in the hangar, and once, before the
ships were adjusted to accommodate
women, I used the men's head. None
of these things ever seemed unusual
to me. Until I saw my dad's workplace
through someone else's eyes- a visit-
ing relative or friend's eyes.
Now I watched the man at the space
center and realized that he is not
unlike you and me. He probably has
a wife calling his cell phone to ask,
"Will you be home for dinner tonight?"
and a child who wants to know if Dad
will be there for his school play. Yes,
he might send men to the moon and
beyond, but the man himself, and the
place where he works, is just as nor-
mal just as earthly as anything
else you've ever seen.
At the end of our tram ride, we
passed a circular grove of trees that is
a memorial to all the astronauts who
have perished on missions. It is a mod-
est, humble memorial. Nothing flashy.
You wouldn't even know it was there
if someone didn't point it out. Just like
the base surrounding it, the memorial
was very much "of this world."
It seemed fitting that we paused to
honor the grove of trees on Memorial
Day weekend. Because it's true that
the astronauts, just like service mem-
bers, have a mission that is incompre-
hensible to some, and yet the risks
to both are entirely human. And that
makes their sacrifice and their work
all the more commendable.
HEY, MONEYMANI
Hey, MoneyMan!
I am currently separated from my wife and will probably
be divorcing in the near future. We have lots of debt! My
ex and I have debt and both of us had a lot of debt before
we got married. I have stopped using the credit cards,
but she is planning a vacation and she intends to use her
cards to pay for it. In fact, I think she is using our credit
cards more now than she was when we were together. I
really don't like the idea that she is out lounging at the
beach while I am here in the hangar working my tail off.
Am I going to get stuck with the bills?
MoneyMan Sez:
You should immediately go to legal because your ques-
tion is a legal matter and I am not an attorney. I will
share with you the laws that a common law property
state follows as described in the book by attorney Robin
Leonard, Solve Your Money Troubles.
All debts incurred by a spouse prior to the marriage or
after the marriage has ended are that spouse's individual
debt.
All debts incurred by spouses jointly during the mar-
riage are joint debts.
A spouse separately owes all debts incurred by an
individual spouse during the marriage but before per-
manent separation unless . the creditor looked to both
spouses for repayment considerations.
An individual is liable for his or her own debts after
separation, unless the debt was incurred for family neces-
sities.
On the surface, it seems you should not be required to
pay for your wife's vacation or her unnecessary spending.
However, consulting an attorney is still your safest and
best option.

National Cancer Survivors Day June 1
From National Cancer Institute
Who is a cancer survivor? The National Cancer
Survivors Day Foundation defines a "survivor"
as anyone living with a history of cancer from
the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.
National Cancer Survivors Day affords communities an
opportunity to celebrate their active, productive cancer
survivor population.
Are you at risk for breast cancer? According to the
National Cancer Institute, simply being a woman and
getting older puts you at risk for breast cancer. The older
you are, the greater your chances of getting breast can-
cer. Also, you are at higher risk if your mother, sister, or
daughter has had breast cancer.
Get regular breast exams. Your chance of getting breast
cancer increases with age. Women in their 40s and older
should get a mammogram every 1 to 2 years, as well as
a clinical breast exam performed by your physician or
nurse.
Finding the disease early with mammograms and breast
exams by your doctor or nurse can save your life. For
yourself and your family, call your healthcare provider for
an exam and mammogram today.

cruits received
valuable hands-on train-
ing during a recent exer-
cise in homes slated for
demolition on Mad Fox
Drive in the Patriots
Point housing area.
"Balfour Beatty Com-
munities will soon begin
demolition of 82 obsolete
military housing units, so
we were fortunate when
they offered us some
units for training purpos-
es," said Assistant Fire
Chief of Operations Fred
Lanier, who supervised
the exercise.
Recruits trained in:
gaining access to the
structure; search and res-
cue; advancing hose line through the interior; creating a
water fan; and cutting a ventilation hole in the roof.
"We did not set fire to the structures," said Lanier.
"Instead, we set a smoke generator inside each building.
Forcible entry tools were used to enter the homes through
doors, windows and even
walls."
He explained that after
entry was achieved, fire-
fighters conducted search
and rescue for any trapped
occupants in this case,
practice dummies.
To perfect their hose-
handling skills, firefighters
entered the home's dense
smoke, using close team-
work to navigate around
tight corners.
Ventilation refers to the
tactic of creating a draft
through an opening above
or opposite the entry point
so that heat and smoke will
be released, permitting fire-
fighters to find and attack
the fire.
"When they successfully
knock down the fire in a
room, there will be poor vis-
ibility due to the smoke and
steam. Hose handlers then
r attack a blaze with water. advance toward a vented
window or door where they set their nozzle to a wide fog
pattern- creating hydraulic ventilation or a 'water fan' to
help clear the air," said Lanier.
In the roof ventilation drill, firefighters climbed ladders
carrying chainsaws and axes to cut holes that allow heat
and gases to escape the structure.

Overcoming the
'quits' through endurance
By Lt. Cmdr. Atticus Taylor

Gentleman named Kendall Roberts
shared an experience from his col-
lege days.
He writes, "To offset the cost of my col-
lege tuition, I worked as a night janitor in
the home economics building. Among my
duties was emptying trashcans in the test
kitchens. One evening, I saw that the first
of four trashcans contained a half-baked
loaf of bread. The next trashcan contained
a pie that had failed somewhere along the
line. The third had a casserole burned
beyond recognition. What was in the last
one? An empty pizza box."

To be sure, anything in life that's worth
having even a well-prepared meal is
not obtained easily.
This is especially true when speaking
of the process that's involved in achieving
and maintaining a prosperous and healthy
standard of living.
That is why Judge Judy Sheidlin's words
ring so true when she says, "There is no

Do your research before going to the car lot
By Thomas Wallace, Esq.
Legal Assistance for Region
Legal Service Office Southeast
Many service members
and their families will
take advantage of the
nice weather in the spring and
summer to shop for a car.
Whether you are buying a new
or used car, it is important to do
your research before you even
head for the car lot. Many car-
buying mistakes can be avoided
by researching, planning and cre-
ating a strategy ahead of time.
Our offices see many people who
bought their car on a whim or
impulse and who never adequate-
ly assessed the purchase. Without
advance planning and comparison
shopping, you are an easy target
at your local car dealership.
First, you need to figure out how
much money you can spend on
your automobile purchase. This
sounds obvious, but I can tell from
our clients that very few people do
this step and end up p.iy in-i- more
for a car than what they should.
This step includes choosing the
options you want on the vehicle
and estimating the fair price of
each option, before car shopping.
Second, once you have an idea of
what you can afford, you can then
start determining what types of
cars fit your budget and that you
would be happy to drive. Buyer's
remorse, in my experience, hap-
pens more often when the con-
sumer does not do research in
advance and pays more than what
the car is worth, or more than the
consumer can afford. If you have
not done your own independent
research through edmunds.com,
Kelley Blue Book online, or some
other independent resource to
determine the true value of a car,
you should not be car shopping.
Additionally, if you are going to
finance the purchase of your car
instead of pi.%Min'i' cash, you will
almost always do better arrang-
ing for your own financing before
going to the car lot and not relying
on the dealership for financing.
Also, research the dealer through
the Better Business Bureau online
or some other source to determine
if its history of customer service is
a good one.
A common arrangement used
when the dealership is financ-
ing your car purchase is the "spot
delivery." In this transaction, you
sign various documents leading
you to believe that a firm contract
price has been reached. In reality,
all you have signed is the appli-
cation for financing, which may
not be approved until well after
you have left the lot with what
you think is your new car. The
problem is that the car does not
become yours until the financing
is approved. When this type of
arrangement goes bad, the con-
sumer is often pressured into
signing a new contract with less
favorable terms.
If you are buying a used car,
you certainly should do a CarFax
report on the vehicle to find out
if the vehicle was involved in an
accident or has some other defect.
Beware- you cannot rely on such
reports alone. There is no substi-
tute for having a mechanic or a
friend with such ability look at
the car before you buy, to evalu-
ate its condition or to uncover evi-
dence of prior accidents. You do
not want to buy a used car only
to determine after purchasing the
car that it will need to have a new
transmission installed, for exam-
ple.
Carefully consider whether the
car comes with a warranty or
whether you want to purchase one
to cover the used car. Carefully
read such warranties to figure out
exactly what items are covered.
There are many other pitfalls
in purchasing both new and used
cars, but they cannot all be dis-
cussed in this article. If you think
that you may be in the market for
a car in the future, consult our
offices for advice on what to avoid
and how to come up with a sound
car buying strategy. Or, request
your command to invite us to do
a car-buying clinic at your com-
mand. For more information, call

According to the 2007 Food &
Health Survey, as many as 66 per-
cent of food shoppers try to make
healthy choices for themselves and
their families. So it makes sense
that more people are reading labels
on packages to choose foods that
meet their health and dietary goals.
However, today it's challenging to
make those decisions with all the
information that is on the labels.
To make your shopping easier, try
using the "5-20 guide" as a quick tip
to label reading. For any nutrient on
the ingredient label (usually found
on the side or back of the product)
consider the following amounts:

Five percent or less is low. For
nutrients you need to limit like
fat, saturated fat and sodium -
choose foods with 5 percent or less
daily value.
Twenty percent or more is high.
For nutrients you need more of -
such as fiber, calcium and iron -
choose foods with 20 percent or more

1:30 p.m. The classes will
run five weeks at the same
time each week. Parents
can begin on any Monday,
but they should complete
all five classes sequential-
ly.
The goal of this program
is to provide an overview of
young children to include
developmental stages emo-

behaviorally with suggest-
ed interventions that will
empower parents to posi-
tively parent while main-
taining control through
knowledge. In other words,
"how to maintain your san-

There is no book of
instructions. It is left up to
the parent to seek out those
instructions, guidelines

The best way to pursue
them is to attend a parent-

overview and offers sugges-

care of this precious gift.

Self-presentation crucial to getting job
From LIFELines
Even if you wear your best Brooks
Brothers suit and nail every inter-
view question-if you don't present
yourself well, you can fail the job inter-
view. But if you are prepared to win the
interview, the only thing you will have to
fear is fear itself.
Know your company and your interview-
er. Be aware of any news stories the com-
pany has appeared in within the past 12
months. If there are company projects in
the news, learn about them and prove how
much of an asset you will be to their proj-
ects.
Check out your interviewer. Is it a man
or a woman? What is the interviewer's
title, and where does he or she fit into the
organization? Is he or she rigid or laid
back? All of this information can help you
polish your answers to anticipated ques-
tions.
Remember the basics. Know where the
interview will take place. Do a drive-by to
see how long it takes to get there at the
time of day your interview is scheduled.
Allow an extra 30 minutes for traffic and
the unexpected.
If you are female, keep an extra pair of
pantyhose in your glove box for emergen-
cies. Your hair should be conservative-
ly styled- no mall flips or pageant hair.
It may also help you to lay your clothes
out the night before the interview. This
ensures you have everything in place for
the interview.
After you arrive (early), sit in your car or
on an outside bench to relax before enter-
ing the building. Don't arrive more than 10
minutes early for an interview (although
it is far worse to be late). Take this time
to give yourself a pep talk. Smile and envi-
sion yourself succeeding at the interview
and making a strong, positive impression.
Do not use this time to review your resume
and think about all those questions.
Know what is a positive response and
what is negative. When asked, "Why did
you leave your previous employer?" don't
go on and on about how much of a jerk your
boss was (no matter how true it may be)
and how your co-worker always clipped her
toenails in her cube and chewed gum with
her mouth open. These responses make
you seem negative and uncooperative.
Instead, stress your desire to move on in
order to better yourself. Talk about how
this job opportunity seems to tie together
all your experience (be sure to highlight
some at this point). Keep the direction of
the interview on the current job opportu-
nity.
You are in control of the interview. If you
are not, your interviewer is poor or you
need to become more assertive. If a ques-
tion or topic is brought up that you feel is
inappropriate or could be skewed nega-
tively, answer it professionally in as few
words as possible and steer it back on path.
Don't ramble on about any one experience.
Stay focused and keep your interviewer in
check.
Check out Monster.com's interview cen-
ter for more helpful hints. The Guide to
Interviews is also a good place to go for
advice.
These steps will help you to bring every-
thing together. There will be a lot of peo-
ple with your same skills and achieve-
ments. Getting a job depends largely on
how you package yourself as a whole. Now
go out there and get the job you want and
deserve.

SPOUSE'S PERSPECTIVE
PTSD: Are you prepared?
~ ~ -~
By Beth Wilson
Special Contributor
Aimee's husband, Don, a Navy
Seabee, wrote home to tell her that
he was recently diagnosed with
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),
as a result of his multiple deploy-
ments to Iraq and Kuwait. Aimee
contacted me, "Don had read
something you wrote about PTSD
and told me that you could help
me understand. What is going
on?"
Niki, another Navy wife, sat at
my table and, tearfully, explained Beth
what was happening in her home.
Her once attentive husband was distant
and uninterested in both her and their
daughter. "He has developed an explosive
temper that is way out of his character, he
has nightmares and panic attacks. Right
before he left on this deployment he told
me he feels nothing and needs a divorce."
Niki's husband is experiencing PTSD.
Most of you know that I am a Navy
wife, writing to a predominantly Navy
audience, so why are we talking about
PTSD? It is a 'combat' issue not a 'Sailor'
issue. Sometimes we Navy spouses, think
that PTSD is experienced by the Army
and Marines, or, possibly our Seals and
Seabees, but not the rest of the fleet. Let
me bust that bubble. The last figures I
saw estimated that over 65,000 Sailors
have been deployed as individual augmen-
tees (IAs) in support of our current combat
efforts. In addition to IAs our Seabees,
corpsmen and chaplains are routinely
deployed to combat areas.
PTSD is a topic I hesitated to address in
this column. It is an important topic I feel
woefully inadequate to address. But it is
*]-J 1B1 PCB!01-
a topic that must be addressed, so we are
going to take three weeks to define PTSD,
its impact on service members and fami-
lies, its symptoms and available resources.
What is PTSD? The National Institute
of Mental Health defines PTSD as "an
anxiety disorder that can develop after
exposure to a terrifying event or
Ordeal in which grave physical
harm occurred or was threatened."
Stress is the normal reaction to an
abnormal situation. When asso-
ciated with the military, PTSD
is not a new phenomenon. It has
Been called shellshock, combat
Vilson stress and battle fatigue. Combat
is not a normal situation. The
experience of combat (or other stress situ-
ations) can lead to PTSD. But it doesn't
have to be combat. A master-at-arms who
asked to remain anonymous admits his
service at Guantanmo Bay, Cuba led to
PTSD. Denisha, wife of an IA who served
in Afghanistan, wrote, "Several weeks
after Steve returned he suggested we both
seek counseling. I thought he was experi-
encing PTSD. Later he told me that he saw
the symptoms of PTSD in me. I learned
that the stress, worry and isolation I expe-
rienced during Steve's 15-month IA tour
in Afghanistan left me with mild PTSD. I
thought I was immune."
In next week's column we will look at the
symptoms and challenges of PTSD. The
following week, we will identify resources,
treatments and support available for you
and your service member.
PTSD is complex issue but through
knowledge, understanding, treatment and
support we can face this challenge with
success.
