Sheriff's police officials meet with community
leaders in an attempt to defuse tension following
the fatal shooting on Jan. 7 of 32-year-old
DeKovan "Nap" Lenard Walls Sr.
A years-long fight over a four-foot strip of land
finally came to an end when county
commissioners chose not to appeal a Circuit Court
ruling.
Cindi Foreman, the executive director of the
Hamilton County Tourist and Economic
Development Council, was suspended without
pay at a special meeting of the Hamilton County
Commission.
Foreman is said to have released confidential
information to a caller, in violation of county
rules. She says the information was public and
that she did nothing wrong.
A White Springs woman has won $20,000 in the
Florida Lottery, lottery officials said Friday.
Sonya Tillman, 45, purchased her winning
Billion Dollar Blockbuster scratch-off ticket from
Munchies Food Store, at 12765 Roberts Street in
White Springs.
Damage continues to mount in the wake of
record flooding here. Emergency officials estimate
that 56 Hamilton County homes are a total loss
and that 85 have sustained major damage.
Another 100 or more remain inaccessible.
An unexploded pipe bomb was discovered
planted on a Jasper roadside and destroyed by a
Gainesville bomb squad.
"Around 10 this morning (April 23), a passing
motorist noticed a piece of PVC sticking up from
the side of the road along SE 54th Drive just down
from Harvest
Fellowship Church
and called it in,"
said Sheriff J.
Harrell Reid.

PCS cutting 168 jobs
PotashCorp of White

ducing staffing levels at
its phosphate facility by
168 full-time positions,
or nearly 20 percent of
its current work force.
As a result of excess
global supply of phos-

reduced phosphate
margins in the wake of
the global economic
downturn, PCS is un-
able to support current
staffing levels. Mike
Williams, manager of
public affairs at PCS,
said the company is not
cutting production, but
rather matching
staffing levels with pro-
duction levels.

Older smokers make better quitters,
Florida State researchers say
Submitted
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
Every New Year, many
smokers resolve to kick
the habit but older
smokers may have a leg
up on their younger
counterparts, according
to Florida State Univer-
sity researchers who de-
veloped an intensive 16-
week cessation pro-
gram.
Psychology professors
Natalie Sachs-Ericsson
and Brad Schmidt sur-
veyed 88 smokers par-
ticipating in the cessa-
tion program and found
that older smokers were
more likely to cite health
concerns as the reason
they wanted to quit,
while younger smokers
were more motivated by
financial reasons or the
desire to prove their
self-control.
"Many of the older
smokers have significant
health problems,"
Schmidt said. "When
there is the combination
of a health issue and
distress about that issue,
we see a high motiva-
tion to quit. Young peo-
ple intellectually under-
stand the health risks of
smoking, but these risks
do not appear to be suf-
ficiently salient in terms
of what it takes to get
them to quit."
Consequently, it's the
older smokers (defined
as those 55 and older)
who are having more
success in quitting. Of
37 participants (19 of
whom were over 55 and
18 younger) who had
completed a follow up
at least one month after
the treatment, 68.4 per-
cent of the older partici-
pants were smoke-free
versus 44.4 percent of
younger smokers.
"The older smokers
have so much more
work to do because they
521 Lakes Blvd Suite B
Lake Park, GA 31636

have been smoking
longer, smoke more and
are more addicted,"
Sachs-Ericsson said.
"They are very dis-
tressed about their
health. But it is this very
distress and concern for
their health that plays a
pivotal role in their mo-
tivation to quit."
The findings are sig-
nificant because current
treatment plans do not
consider different moti-
vations for quitting
across the lifespan, ac-
cording to Schmidt and
Sachs-Ericsson. They are
now developing a pro-
posal for a unique new
treatment plan that
specifically targets older
smokers.

"The needs of individ-
uals and effective tools
in smoking cessation
treatments may differ
depending on the age of
the individual," Sachs-
Ericsson said. "We be-
lieve we may have an
even higher rate of
smoking cessation suc-
cess among older adults
if we would more di-
rectly address their
health concerns and the
considerable benefits
they will experience,
even at a late age, from
smoking cessation."
Cigarette smoking is
the leading cause of pre-
ventable death and dis-
ability in North Ameri-
ca, but overcoming nico-
tine addiction is very
difficult without a mul-
tifaceted strategy such
as the one the Florida
State program employs,
according to Schmidt.
The researchers, in
collaboration with Col-
lege of Medicine Assis-
tant Professor Mary
Gerend, developed the
cessation program with
a $375,000, three-year
grant from the James
and Esther King Bio-
medical Research Pro-
gram. It includes educa-
tion, group sessions
with a therapist and
nicotine replacement
therapy, also known as
"the patch."
Daily smokers be-
tween the ages of 18 and
65 who are in good
health are eligible to
participate in the pro-
gram. Participants are
expected to attend
screening appointments,
weekly group sessions
and follow-up appoint-
ments. In return, they
will receive free nicotine
patches and can earn up
to $120 for taking part in
the assessments.

OPINION
Modern day lunacy
Sen. John Rockefeller, D-W.Va.,
chairman of the Senate Finance Sub-
committee on Health Care, and Rep.
Joe Courtney D-Conn., a member of
the House Education and Labor
Committee, have introduced the
Pre-existing Condition Patient Pro-
tection Act, which would eliminate
pre-existing condition exclusions in
all insurance markets. That's an
Obama administration priority. I
wonder whether President Obama
and his congressional supporters
would go a step further and protect
not just patients but everyone
against pre-existing condition exclu-
sions by insurance companies. Let's
look at the benefits of such a law.
A person might save quite a bit of
money on fire insurance. He could
wait until his home is ablaze and
then walk into Nationwide and say,
"Sell me a fire insurance policy so I
can have my house repaired." The

Guess how much
I'm going to

the policy? If you
said somewhere
in the neighbor-
hood of $400,000,
you'd be pretty
close to the right answer. You might
say, "Williams, you're right. Forcing
fire and auto insurance companies
to sell policies for a pre-existing fire
or auto accident is bizarre and stu-
pid, but it's different with health in-
surance." Yes, health insurance is
different from fire and auto insur-
ance but the insurance principle re-
mains the same.
If Congress and the president are
successful in making the Pre-exist-
ing Condition Patient Protection Act
the law of the land, their treachery
won't stop there. Insurance compa-
nies will attempt to charge people
with pre-existing health conditions
a higher price to compensate for
their higher expected cost. Those
people will complain to Congress.
Then Congress will enact insurance
premium price controls. Insurance
companies might try to restrict just
what treatments they will cover un-
der such restrictions. That means
Congress will play a greater role in
managing what insurance compa-
nies can and cannot do.
The dilemma Congress always
faces, when it messes with the econ-
omy, was aptly described in a Ne-
gro spiritual play by Marcus Cook
Connelly titled "Green Pastures." In
it, God laments to the angel Gabriel,
"Every time Ah passes a miracle, Ah

gress creates a miracle for one
American, it creates a non-miracle
for another. After that, Congress
has to create a compensatory mira-
cle. Many years ago, I used to testi-
fy before Congress, something I
refuse to do now. At several of the
hearings, I urged Congress to get
out of the miracle business and
leave miracle making up to God.
For a president and congressman
to shamelessly propose something
like the Pre-existing Condition Pa-
tient Protection Act demonstrates
just how far we've gone down the
road to perdition. The most tragic
thing is that most Americans have
no idea that such an act violates
every principle of insurance and it's
something that not even yester-
year's lunatics would have thought
up.

FWC reminds Floridians that balloon
releases take a toll on wildlife
Submitted
With holiday celebra-
tions and bowl games
coming up, the Florida
Fish and Wildlife Con-
servation Commission
(FWC) is reminding
event organizers and
other Floridians that a
little-known-law pro-
hibits releasing more
than nine lighter-than-
air balloons within 24
hours.
Wildlife, especially
sea turtles, mistake bal-
loons for food, and
strings attached to bal-
loons can entangle birds
and other animals.
The release into the at-
mosphere of large num-
bers of balloons inflated
with lighter-than-air
gases poses a danger
and nuisance to the en-
vironment, particularly
to wildlife and marine
animals, according to
Florida Statute 379.233.
The law provides for a
$250 fine for violations.
The only exceptions
are for scientific or me-
teorological balloons re-
leased by a governmen-
tal agency or under a
governmental contract,
hot air balloons that are
recovered after launch-
ing, and balloons re-
leased indoors. The law
also allows for the re-
lease of balloons that are
biodegradable or pho-
todegradable under
FWC rules, but no bal-
loon material qualifies
under FWC rules so far.

Why Have You
By David H. Matier,
Doctor of Pastoral Counseling
"My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me? Why art thou so far
from helping me, and from the
words of my roaring? (Psalm 22:1).
Probably it would do you good to
read the 22nd Psalm and see the
awful description of crucifixion that
is given; a thousand or so years be-
fore it was used as a form of capitol
punishment; a method of slowly
and painfully putting men to death.
And it was telling the Israelites how
their Savior was to die. "And about
the ninth hour Jesus cried with a
loud voice, saying, E-li, E-li, la-ma
sabach-tha-ni? That is to say, My
God, my God why hast thou forsak-
en me?" (Matthew 27:46).
One pastor said recently, in his
Sunday sermon, "a lot of people
think He cried this out because He
took on all of the sins of the world,"
and goes on to say, "I prescribe to
something that William P. Young
writes, 'I don't think that is the case.
God is a God of love. Nothing will
ever separate us from His love. I
don't think that God turned His
back on His Son. I think God was
right there in the middle of it, this
was designed by God but I think Je-
sus was feeling what we have all
felt when we go through unbearable
pain.' I think Jesus was feeling that
God, our Father, was at a dis-
tance...."

saken of God at one time or anoth-

THE JASPER NEWS, Jasper, FL
Special delivery: UF nursing student helps "miracle" baby
Submitted
GAINESVILLE, Fla. <
At almost 4 weeks old,
Miracle Cromwell coos
and cries like any new-
born baby. However,
her entrance into the
world was anything
but ordinary, thanks in
part to a quick-think-
ing University of Flori-
da College of Nursing
student.
It was a typical fall
evening on Thursday,
Nov. 19 near the UF
campus: heavy traffic,
dusk settling and the
Gator Marching Band
practicing at Norman
Field for that week-
end's home game. Se-
nior nursing student
Emily Hunt was on
her way to work and
sitting in traffic at Mu-
seum Road and South-
west 13th Street when
she noticed the com-
motion ahead of her.
When she discovered
a woman in a van was
having a baby, Hunt
hopped off her scooter
and ran to the front of
the line of cars. What
she saw when she ar-
rived was out of a film
or TV show.
Hunt found Loretta
Cromwell crouched
over the front seat of
the van, struggling
with pain. She had la-
bored all day and was
sent home from her
doctor's office because
she wasn't dilated
enough. But by 4 p.m.,
her water broke, and
she and her family of
five headed to Shands
National Certified
MEDICAL
SECRETARY
at UF. They wouldn't
get there soon enough.
As Hunt approached,
Cromwell's husband
was delivering the
baby.
"The father was lit-
erally "catching" the
baby as it came out,"
said Hunt, who had al-
ready attended several
births as part of her
clinical rotation in ob-
stetric/maternal nurs-
ing. "I quickly came to
the van and started
evaluating the baby,
assessing her breath-
ing and pulse. She
wasn't crying much,
which worried me. I
knew I had to do
something immediate-
ly so that the baby
would not lose any
more warmth."
Hunt asked the dri-
ver in the truck behind
them to give her a
towel. After she found
a towel, she started
vigorously massaging
and stimulating the
baby. She started mas-
saging the baby's face
and nose to remove
any secretions or
blockages to promote
breathing, too.
"It was amazing
having Emily there,"
said Chris Cromwell,
Miracle's father. "For
her to come up and
announce who she was
and take control of the
situation. I tell you
what, that made me
feel real good. I felt
like she couldn't have
been in a better place
after that. Everyone
was trying to help,

and I was holding onto
the baby. When [Emi-
ly] came, it relieved a
lot of worry."
Coincidentally, San-
dra Citty, Ph.D.,
A.R.N.P., a College of
Nursing clinical assis-
tant professor, was
next to the car when
one of the family's
older children yelled
for help. Citty, a fami-
ly nurse practitioner,
called 9-1-1 and assist-
ed the delivery in the
early moments, though
her only recent labor
experiences were the
births of her own chil-
dren. She coached the
father on what to do,
but Emily's presence
made a huge differ-
ence.
"It is so strangely
miraculous that this
dedicated and mature
nursing student, who
happened to be in her
OB clinical rotation
that semester, would
be driving by at that
moment and could
help this family," Citty
said.
After emergency
medical services ar-
rived and the cord had
been cut, the EMTs fo-
cused on the mother.
Hunt rocked and
stroked the baby, pro-
viding her the warmth
and comfort needed in
the beginning of a
newborn's life.
When Cromwell was
safely on the stretcher,
ready for transport to
the hospital, Hunt
placed the baby, swad-
dled in the towel, onto
the mother's chest.
Cromwell lit up, snug-
gled and kissed the
baby.
After Hunt finished
her shift as a hostess at
Carrabba's that night,
she went to Shands to
visit the Cromwell
family.
"It was a blessing to
me to have her there
and it was a blessing
for my family to have
those two women
(Hunt and Citty)
there," Cromwell said.
"I thank God for
them."
Hunt cites her ob-
stetrics clinical instruc-
tor, Michele Brimeyer,
M.S.N., A.R.N.P., for
everything she has
learned this semester.
Brimeyer, after hearing
the tale from Citty,
sent a proud and con-
gratulatory e-mail to
Hunt that night.
"It seems like it was
fate that they were
there that day and
could help this family
and their baby,"
Brimeyer said. "But
more than that, it is a
testament to our col-
lege preparing nurses
to not simply succeed
academically but to
critically and practical-
ly apply the knowl-
edge, theory, and
skills of nursing prac-
tice."
The Cromwells were
struck by Hunt's com-
passion and caring
even after the baby
was born, from her
visits to them in the
hospital to the contin-

man colon cancer cell lines and
mice with established human tu-
mors suggests that the addition
of a small molecule to the cancer
drug Temozolomide disrupts re-
pair mechanisms in a type of tu-
mor cells that is highly resistant
to treatment.
The discovery will be featured
on the cover of December's Mole-
cular Cancer Research, a journal
of the American Association for
Cancer Research.
"This is very important because
aside from aggressive surgery
with possibly chemotherapy,
there are no specific treatments
for colon cancer," said Satya
Narayan, a professor of anatomy
and cell biology at the College of
Medicine and a member of the
UF Shands Cancer Center. "The
recurrence rate for this type of
cancer after surgery is very high,
about 30 to 50 percent, and there
is an urgent need to develop new
approaches to manage this dead-
ly disease."
The National Cancer Institute
estimates there will be about
106,000 new cases of colon cancer
in the United States in 2009. It is
the second most common cause
of cancer-related death in both
men and women in the Western
hemisphere. The disease forms in
the large intestine and survival
rates vary according to how soon
the cancer is diagnosed and the
treatment is started.
Narayan's research team evalu-
ued phone calls she
has made. She visited
the family last week,
and the Cromwells
plan to attend her
graduation in May,
too.
"I will always be
grateful for her,"
Cromwell said. "I
think she is going to
be very successful in
all that she does. She
is my baby's angel."
ated more than 140,000 small
molecules, finally arriving at a
tiny molecule that precisely
blocks the ability of cancer cells
to recognize and repair the DNA
damage inflicted by Temozolo-
mide, or TMZ.
"Our idea was if you induce
DNA damage (with TMZ), and at
the same time block cell repair,
you can synergize toxic effects to
the cancer cells," Narayan said.
"We hope that with this combi-
nation treatment we can reduce
the tumors drastically and ex-
pand the lifetime of patients
much longer than is currently
possible."
TMZ is commonly used against
certain types of brain cancer. It
works by damaging the DNA of
the cancer. However, the chal-
lenge of treating patients is that
colon cancer is not a single dis-
ease but an array of disorders
with distinct molecular mecha-
nisms, with one type being quite
proficient at repairing the DNA
damage inflicted by the drug.
By combining TMZ with the
small molecule, Narayan's team
was able to disable the colon can-
cer's ability to manufacture re-
pair enzymes.
The UF researchers effectively
used an amount of TMZ that is
about 10 times lower than recom-
mended in its studies of mice
with human colon cancer tumors.
If only about one-tenth as
much TMZ is needed to kill can-
cer cells, Narayan said, it will be
possible to use lower doses of a
drug that creates a great deal of
adverse side effects, a partial list-
ing of which includes anxiety,
back pain, breast pain, constipa-
tion, cough, diarrhea, dizziness,
drowsiness, dry skin, hair loss,
headache, joint pain, loss of ap-
petite, mouth sores, muscle aches
and nausea.

Forsaken Me?
been working for, paying the pay-
ments on for so long but now due to
losing a job, due to the poor econo-
my, you are jobless you ask, "God,
why have you forsaken me?" Or
maybe it was when that loved one
was told he/she only had a few
weeks or months to live. Or you lost
a child do to an auto accident be-
cause the other driver was careless.
You cried out in the night many a
time, "OH GOD, WHY?" But it's not
the same!
On the cross Jesus took our sin
debt upon Himself; He became sin.
"FOR THE WAGES OF SIN IS
DEATH..." (Romans 6;23 emphasis
writer's) means that SEPARATION
is the result of sin whether it is
physical separation from our loved
ones who pass away or, for human
beings, the ultimate death, eternal
separation from God in a place the
Bible refers to as Hell. But on the
cross Jesus was bearing all of our
sin in His own body. FOR THOSE
FEW HOURS ON THE CROSS,
GOD THE FATHER AND GOD
THE HOLY SPIRIT COULD NOT
LOOK UPON JESUS BECAUSE HE
HAD BECOME SIN for you and me.
MY GOD, MY GOD WHY HAST
THOU FORSAKEN ME!
Yes, we've all felt forsaken by
God but it's not the same as what
Jesus was experiencing on the cross
and to say it was is to play His ex-
perience down- to dumb down the
Gospel.

When it comes to cars, nothing has more horsepower than
newspaper advertising to ignite consumers. Auto shoppers
absorb a great deal of information from a cornucopia of sources
but rely on newspapers to help them make a sound choice.
