City cop in hot water for Web postings
JPD officer reprimanded
for response to criticism
of shooting investigation

'With tension continuing to rise in
IHamilton County over the unsolved
4: shooting incident of Jan. 7, more
and more.citizens are logging on to
a local Web site and voicing their
opinion on the matter.
While these postings are perfectly
legal and in no way violate anyone's
rights, the opinion of .local law en-
forcement officers should not be
made public, according to Jasper
Mayor Ann Lessman.
On Tuesday night, the hottopic at
the Jasper City Council meeting was
the posting of the personal opinion
of JPD Officer Tammy Williams on a
local television station's Web site.
Numerous residents and area TV
viewers logged on to the
WCTV.TV6 site
to post their feelings regarding the
unsolved murder. Many of the com-,
ments were negative toward local
law enforcement and the fact that no
solid leads have developed.
Responding to this criticism,
Williams responded as "POLICE"
and made statements such as, "If
you don't like the way we do our
job, then get a badge and do it your-
self. Oh, wait, you love the way we
do our job when you need us. Since

restaurant reopens with a
little help from a local church

In the Town of White Springs, within two
weeks of each other, the Suwannee Diner
closed and the Country Cafe reopened after
being on hiatus for nearly three years.
The Suwannee Diner closed its door on Jan.
23. A note was written in the window: "Thank
you for seven and a half years. The Stormant
Family May 2001 to January 2009."

mant. "Fat Belly's is co-

like to come in and eat,
relax and watch the

The Suwannee Diner.

been cited in national
magazines.
"I hope for that and a,
lot more," Stormant
said. However, he did
admit, "I miss the mur-

have been made for the

2. The name is familiar

ing areas. However, it is

church, it only seemed
right for the church to

law Dawn, and my
wonderful granddaughter, Lily Grace. So, let me tell
you a little.about thids wonderful artist's community,
Ocean Springs, nestled within the shadow of Biloxi,
:1,Tyright on the Gulf of Mexico. This little town was hit
hard by Katrina with a twenty two foot stormsurge
and is just now starting to look right again. This was
a "working visit" as Ben and I worked on building a
privacy fence for his backyard every day of my visit.,
Ocean Springs is a historic community and the plan-
ning and zoning board has wisely set up rules for
t is Mardi Gras season here and Ocean Springs
traditionally hosts the first Mardi Gras Parade in this
region. It was my first Mardi Gras parade and I cer-
-tainly hope it won't be my last. I have never seen so
' many beads in my life! Every float in the parade was
throwing a steady stream of beads, along with a lot
of candy and some special prizes, including. toys,
Stuffed animals and even more. I'll bet there were a
few $20 prizes thrown to the crowd off of several of
the floats. Me, I seemed to have a moon pie magnet'
on me and I came home with a sack full of them!
The celebration was fun, not crazy or too boisterous,
just fun, fun, fun! A lot of diversity too and for the
very first time in my life, I heard Celtic rap, with
"rap's heard driving beat and lyrics, and bagpipes in
the background!
I'-'It was interesting to observe the way the commu-
nity embraced the occasion. Although Mardi Gras
-had its own national and, ethnic origins to begin
-with, it now belongs to everyone and the diversity of
the parade and the crowd that watched it was very
inclusive. It felt good to be part of it. Now, White
Springs is not Ocean Springs, nor would I want it to
be, but I may bring back an idea or two to share with
you in future coltmons. Several folks from Ocean
S Springs will becoming detttnWWhit Springs next
Smooth for a trip on the Suwannee. The don't have
anythingn tto compare with it out here, and that's a

seed stock. Working
with youth in Marion,
Bradford, and Alachua
counties, these educa-

Bessie Jean Walls
Mrs. Bessie Jean Walls celebrated her 77th birth-
day with her family and friends at the Civic .Center
on Saturday night. She was showered with gifts, ac-
colades and lots of love. This proved to be an event
she will never forget and she thanked her children
and grandchildren for the wonderful planning, the
beautifully decorated building and. the delicious
food. She thanked her pastor and friends for sharing
such a beautiful evening with her.
VFW's first shipinmunt
of new year is today
The members of \TVFW Post 8095 announce
they will be packing boxes for soldiers on today,
Thursday, Feb. 12, at the VFW from 5p.m. until
S p.m. This will be the first shipment of 2009.
The VFTW has learned of 130 infantry soldiers
who are stationed in an area of Afgharustan
where there are no ameruties. The majority of
* the boxes packed on Feb. 12, will be sent to this
unit to let them know they are supported and
appreciated. Plese join the VFW in sending a
large number of boxes to these men.
Members of the community are invited to
bring items for the boxes to the Jasper Library

Plans are being made
again for the eighth
Grade Adventure at Uni-
versal Studios in Orlan-
do. This is a Grad Night
activity just for eighth
graders. The date of the
event is Friday, May 8.
The cost is $90 which in-
cludes admission to Uni-
versal Studios, light
snacks at Universal and
the charter bus ride. The
first payment of $30 is
due on Feb. 17. The sec-
ond payment of $30 is
due on March 10, and
the final $30 payment is

School varsity boys bas-
ketball team traveled to
Madison to take on the
Madison County High
School Cowboys.
The first quarter was
evenly played as teams
weht back and forth
throughout. However,
HCHS would take a 14-
10 lead at the end of the
period.
The second quarter
was all Madison as
Hamilton committed 9
turnovers in this quarter
alone to help the Cow-
bodys get easy buckets

It is good to be
back. After being
away for several
weeks, it may be a lit-
tle difficult to get
back into the swing
of things, be patient
with me. First I want
to thank the girls at
the JASPER NEWS
for being so patient
and helpful and un-
derstanding during
this time. I really
have missed the con-
tacts with each of
you, now I need your
help to catch up on
what has been hap-
pening around town
and the county. Let
me hear from you.
For the past month
most of my time has
been spent going
back and forth, and
being in Crystal River
where my sister
Martha Gibson, who
many of you have
met, has been in the
nursing home, in and
out, for some time.
When I was there the
first trip, she had to
be in the hospital for
a feew days,then back
to the nursing home,
where she passed.
'away last Wednes-
day. Her funeral ser-
vice was on Saatur-
day. For those of you
who were aware of
this, thank you sin-
cerely_for your ex-
pressions of care,
love and symathy.
She had been ill for
several yeas, she is
* now at rest.
It was great to see
Jo Coe at church on
Sunday, playing the
piano and singing in
the choir. She has
had quite an ordeal
and treasures your
prayers and concern.
It was my plan to
do a column this
week, but with catch-
ing up with things at
home, haven't had
much time to do this;
call me, email me or
get in touch in what-
ever manner is best
for you. Hope to
hear from you soon.

On December 21, 2008, Empowering
'Tabernacle House of Prayer men went

Not too long ago I bought a used car
from the classifleds. It was a great
deal. It ran well and came from the
family of an older woman who had
given up driving. They informed me
before I bought the car that it was In
an accident and the front end was
repaired. Since they were the origi-
nal owners and it ran well, I still
bought It. Now two years later, the
car continues to run great and has
needed no work. However, when I
switched insurance companies
recently to get better rates, the agent
told me that the DMV records
showed the car was in 8 accidents in
3 years, all in the front right corner.
Now I understand why the woman
stopped driving! I heard from a
friend that a new government data-
base is being developed to help peo-
ple search car-titles for problems like
this. I know I can buy paid J
reports, but this new sys-
tern sounded free. I was "
wondering if you could tell
me more about it. It looks like
it may be helpful next time.

Cash: You are correct that the gov-
ernment is developing a national data-
base of motor vehicle information. It's
called The National Motor Vehicle Title
Information System and its intent is to
help warn potential buyers of used cars
that are stolen or declared totaled. By
simply entering the vehicle's VIN
(vehicle identification number), the
database will instantly verify the car's
title and mileage.
Carry: The information is collected
from insurance companies, salvage
yards and junkyards. All of these com-
panies will be required to provide data
on vehicles damaged by floods, fires or
crashes that cause them to be written off.
Cash: The database was actually the
result of a law passed in 1992.
However, the project was never started.
TJien in September of 2008, after a law-
suit by consumer groups, a court ruled
that the U. S. Department of Justice
must begin the project and complete the
database by March 2009.
Carry: Since the new system is a
national database, it has the potential to
alleviate problems of information being
lost when vehicles are sold or regis-
tered in new states. As with anything
new, the system may need time to work
out the kinks, but it should afford con-
sumers another check before buying a,
used car.
Washed Up
While most car purchases are straight-
forward and honest; there are some sell-
ers who try to take advantage of
consumers. In recent years, there has
been a popular scam called "title wash-
ing" or "brand washing". When a vehi-
cle is written offby an insurance
company due to damage, such as a flood,
the title is marked with a "salvage"
brand. These cars may still be drivable,
but are now worth far less. However by
transferring the title to a state that doesn't
recognize the "salvage" status, a new
title can be issued without the brand and
the vehicle can be sold at a higher price.
Retirement Years
As we age, our reaction time typical-
ly slows down. It's a part of nature and
can be a factor when driving a vehicle.
According to the National Traffic
Highway Safety Administratioh, there
are nearly 30 million drivers over the
age of 65. This age group accounts for
-8% of people injured in a crash, 14% of
all fatalities and 19% of pedestrian
fatalities. This is higher than any other
age group, including teen drivers.

"People lose power in their homes and get so excited about using :
their generator that they don't pay attention to where they place it.-
Check the owner's manual and make sure it's far enough from the
home so carbon monoxide doesn't get inside," Gurry suggests.
3. Clean the chimney. "Simply brushing the ashes down the chute.-
does not clean the chimney and, in fact, can create a problem,",
warns Gurry. "The ashes build up and can block other points of':
connection." To prevent this build-up, open the hatch at the bottom
of the chimney and remove the ashes. Gurry recommends this be
done weekly along with an annual visit from the chimney sweep. :
4. Check vents. Regularly inspect your home's external vents to'
ensure they are not obscured by debris, dirt or snow. "This .is"
especially important in cold climates, where a couple of feet of
snow can easily block a direct vent to a gas fireplace or chimney,"
says Gurry.
5. Install a carbon monoxide detector. "This is the most important
thing you can do to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and it's
so easy. People install smoke detectors throughout the house and
often overlook carbon monoxide detectors," Gurry says. Battery
operated models can start at less than $20 and Gurry suggests
installing at least one on every floor of the home. If your monitor
goes off, Gurry urges, "Get out as fast as you can and call the fire
department."
