Answers questions for locals
Nancy Oliver, Executive Director of
Tourism. and Economic Development for
Hamilton County, recently toured an
ethanol plant located in Craig, Mo. The
plant, owned by Golden Triangle Energy,
has been in production .since 2001 and cur-
rently has 31 employees, according to their
website, www.goldentriangleenergy.com.
The plant processes six to seven million
bushels of corn yearly to produce 19 to 20
million gallons of ethanol per year. As a
by-product of the process, the plant pro-
duces approximately 17,000 tons of dis-
tilled dried grain and 100,000 tons of dis-
tiller wet grain that can be used for live-
stock 'feed. The-website states that the esti-

Jasper Police Department
enforcing noise ordinance
At the the direction of the Jasper City Council,
the.Jasper Police Department (JPD) began enforc-
ing the City's noise ordinance as it pertains to mo-
tor vehicles effective July 14. According to Jasper
Police Chief Jeffrey McGuire, members of the JPD
have been directed to issue a summons to allviola-
tors of City Ordinance #2003-001:
"No person shall play, use, operate or permit to
be played, used or .operated any radio, tape
recorder, cassette player, compact disc player or
any other machine or device for reproducing or
broadcasting sound in a manner whereby the
sound generated is audible at a distance of 100 feet
from the device producing the sound."
Violation of this ordinance is considered a sec-
ond-degree misdemeanor punishable, with a fine of
up to $500, up to 60 days in the county jail or both.
The public is being informed of the parameters
of the ordinance in order to achieve voluntary
compliance, according to Chief McGuire. The
Jasper Police Department looks forward to work-
ing with the community in a cooperative effort at
improving the "quality of life" in the City of
Jasper, he added.

The Hamilton County
Chamber of Commerce is
sponsoring an information-
al meeting about the pro-
posed ethanol plant to be
located on US 41 north of
White Springs at 7 p.m. on
Tuesday, July 25, at the
South Hamilton Elementary
School auditorium in White
Springs. Representatives
from Gate Petroleum Prod-
ucts, experts from the Uni-
versity of.Florida and the
state agencies responsible
for permitting, including
the Suwannee River Water
Management District, will
address the issues concern-
ing ethanol and the pro-
posed plant.
When Oliver returned
from her trip, she answered
the following questions for
the Jasper News about her
tour of the plant and. the
surrounding area:
Q: What was your first
impression as you
approached the plant?
A: It looked like the
SAphoto I had seen on
their website. It was sur-
rourided by many acres of
corn that is also owned by
the ethanol company.
Q : Were you traveling
by car?
: Yes.
: Could you detect
any odors?
A: No. I rolled the win-
dows down on the ap-
proach and did not smell
anything.
: Where did you park
in relation to the
plant?
A: I was in the plant
parking lot that is adjacent
to the offices.
: Did you detect an
odor from there?
: Yes, from the park-
ing lot I could smell
the odor from the plant,
which is a yeast type of
smell.
Q : Did you find the
odor offensive?
A: It was not offensive
to me. It smelled
strong on site but not off
site.
: While you were
outside the plant
could you hear any noise
from the equipment or ma-
chinery?
A: Yes, you could hear
some of the machin-
ery, but a lot of it was en-
closed in buildings due to
the harsh winter weather.
Some of that same equip-
ment will not be enclosed
here since we don't experi-
ence the same weather con-
ditions.
: What safety equip-
ment were you re-
quired to wear while inside
the plant?
A: Safety goggles.
: So the noise level
wasn't unusually
high inside the plant?
A: Not high enough
that they gave me
earplugs.
Q: When, if ever, has
there been an explo-
sion or fire at the plant?
A: There haven't
been any that I am
aware of.
: Do the majority of
the employees live in
the county?
: I don't have the
t specifics; but I be-
lieve some live in the coun-
ty, some in Craig, and some
live outside the county.
: Did the employees
appear satisfied?
A : The General Man-
ager gave us the tour
and everyone seemed to be
busy, yet polite. He had a
few conversations with the
various operators, etc., and
they seemed to be comfort-
able arid on good terms
with each other.
: Are there other in-
dustries located near-
by?
: Farming and corn
A processing.
: Are the government
officials, business
owners and residents posi-
tive or negative about the
plant?
A: Everyone I spoke
Ilwith including resi-
dents, business owners and
the Craig City Clerk were
positive about the plant and
how it has helped their
community. The very small
downtown area is dose to
the plant. A small number
mentioned that when the
weather conditions are just
right they get a whiff of the
yeast smell from the plant.
Overall, they have a great
working relationship with
the company and feel the
company has been benefi-
cial to the community by
providing jobs and through
donations to the schools,
etc.
/-: What type of busi-
nesses are located
near e plant?
A: The small down-
town area has the
City Hall, a hardware store,
insurance office, farm oper-
ations office and post office.
Q : Has business in-
creased or decreased
since the plant opened?
A: The plant is in the
county, not within
the city limits. However, the
downtown area is within a
few hundred feet from the
plant. The City Clerk said
that during the year-long
construction period for the
plant a great deal of money
was spent at campgrounds,
etc., and actually a couple of
RV parks were opened just
for the workers. She said of
course that decreased once
the plant became opera-
tional with a staff of 30.
Q : Has the population
increased or de-
creased since the plant
opened?
A : I don't believe there
x as been any signifi-
cant change one way or the
other. The town's popula-
tion is about 300. Evidently,

ing Master Board Training
and Certified Board Train-
ing. As a Certified School
Board Member with a total
of 160 hours of voluntary
individualized training,
Butler said that the training
has been a great tool in be-
coming a more effective
school board member. She
has had training in school
finance, ethics, policy devel-
opment, planning, legisla-
tive/administrative
processes, school law and
.many other areas -of person-
al development.
In addition, Buttler was
chosen to be a mentor to
newly elected school board
members in other counties.
She is a gubernatorial ap-
pointee to the North Cen-
tral Florida Regional Plan-
ning Council and a mem-
ber of the Jasper Kiwanis
Club.
Butler has-supported
many activities in the
School District including
providing ice cream for
award recipients at North
,Hamilton Elementary each
nine weeks for the past four
years. She has also support-
ed many athletic and acade-
mic programs for many
years. She was honored for
her continued support of
the Dreamwheel at Hamil-
ton County High School by
having the 2006 edition
dedicated to her.'
Butler stated that her ma-
jor focus as a Board Mem-
ber has been student
achievement and providing
the children a safe environ-
ment in which to learn.

: How do nearby resi-
dents feel about the
plant?
A: Those I spoke to
were not negative
about the plant being there,
felt it was good for the econ-
omy. Mentioned the odor
under certain weather con-
ditions (see above).
r : Do they feel that the
k lant has benefitted
the whole county?
A : Yes, the plant is ac-
tually located in the
county, not the city limits,
so any taxes that are paid go
to the county.
Q : Are there individual
houses, groups of
houses or subdivisions near
the plant?
A : There are individual
t-Jhomes and a small
apartment complex that is
government-subsidized se-
nior housing. All the homes
are older, no new subdivi-
sions, etc.
Q : Did they move there
after the plant was
built or was the plant built
after they located there?
: All were there
before the plant came
in.
Q : How does the traffic
affect residents and
businesses -" noise, pollution,
etc?
: The traffic from the
plant goes right out
to the highway and on to
the interstate. No one men-
tioned noise or pollution is-
sues.
Q : What does the sur-
rounding environ-
ment look like Wooded,
-fields, etc.?
A : The area immediate-
-. y adjacent to the
plant is a corn field. There is
als6 a train track right be-
side the plant. They have

Q ; Has the plant affect-
ed the environment
any, suchas nearby bodies
of water?
A: Not that I'm aware of.
The Department of Natural
Resources is the regulating '
body for them.
: Are the fish safe to
eat?
A : I don't know.
Are there any recre-
\ation areas near the
plant? .
A: There is a state park
A-about nine miles from
the plant. I spoke to a cou-
ple of people who live there
and they said they never
smell or hear anything.
The comments I heard
were mostly positive, al-
though several did mention
that the smell was a minor
nuisance close to the plant
during certain weather con-
ditions. The company ap-
pears to be a good communi-
ty partner and many said it
was an economic benefit to
the community and county.

Days after the event,
Rebecca Harrell, Angela's
22-year-old daughter said
she was still speechless at
how many people turned
out to help her mother
and grandparents. Rebec-
ca stays busy with school,
working and spending
time with Eli, her 11-year-
old brother.
Eli was also at the
fundraiser and was
amazed at the people who
were there. He asked Re-
becca, "Did all these peo-
ple come out help Nana
and Papa (Shirley and
Wayne)?"
: The doctors plan to re-
inforce Angela's trachea
and an airway to her lung
with a type of mesh. The
surgery has been post-
poned three times be-
cause Angela had a fever.
"It has been frustrating
to have the surgery put
off; it is quite tiring,"
Shirley said. "But Angela
has excellent doctors and
they are the only ones
who can do the surgery.
We're anxious to have the
surgery done and have
her back where she be-
longs."
Angela has an infection
now and is in serious con-
dition. Rebecca, Eli, An-
gela's sister, Sharon
Davis, and Sharon's
daughter left Wednesday
for Boston. Shirley asks
that everyone keep An-
gela in their prayers. She
,said that prayer is what
has kept Angela so far
and only prayer can con-
tinue to keep her.

people may not realize that
all the parking spaces
around our building are
not owned or controlled by
the Post Office. The side-
walks and the parking
spaces are controlled by the
City of Jasper; thus we
have no control over them.
I've requested improve-
ments from headquarters
on numerous projects, but
like most projects, the im-
provements have been
placed on hold due to bud-
get concerns.
I would like for every
customer within the Jasper
delivery area to look at
their property and see if
they have any signs or
identifying marks showing
their 911 address. I've been
in the Hamilton County
area for one-and-a-half
years and I'm amazed by
the lack of concern from
customers about showing
their address. This is a very
important item that all citi-
zens should do. In case of
an emergency, the police,
fire department or ambu-
lance needs to be able to
identify the location you
are calling from your
health may depend on this.
If you have a package
coming through the USPS
(United States Postal Ser-
vice), UPS, FedEx or some
other delivery point and
the driver can't identify
your location, the item
might be delayed.

Park System and is located
12 miles west of Live Oak

1 1/2 hour tram tour ride
with an interpretation tour

pets or smoking on the

Edward Christie

of Lake City, Florida,
died July 13, 2006, at
Shands of Alachua General
Hospital in Gainesville,
Florida. He was the son of
the late LD and Edith
Christie, and a lifelong resi-
dent of Hamilton and Co-
lumbia Counties. Mr.
Christie had worked for
Timco for the past 38 years
as a Maintenance Supervi-
sor. He was a veteran of Ko-
rea, having served in the
United States Army and
was awarded the Purple
Heart. Mr. Christie was a
member of the Bethel Unit-
ed Methodist Church. He
was preceded in death by
two brothers: Alton Christie
and Bill Christie, and one
daughter Judy Raulerson.
Survivors include his lov-
ing wife of 43 years: Pat
Christie of Lake City; six
daughters: Mary Thomas of

Pornography Part
As we continue our dis-
cussion on our subject for
the month of.July, our
question for today is
"Who are the victims of
pornography?" Those.
who are addicted to
pornography are victims.
Males: There is such a
*thing as the "pleasure of
sin for a season" (Heb.
11:25). However, accord-
ing to James 1:13-15, "lust-
ful sin in its fullest form
brings forth death" -
death to our self-esteem,
to meaningful relation-
ships, to moral absolutes,
and all. too often literal
death to the innocent as
well as the guilty.
In an odd twist, expo-
sure to pornography leads
to a lower net return each
time which is to say that
the more pornography
one sees, the more explic-
it the images must be in
order to excite interest -
his eyes roam across the
images of unblinking
faces, leering at women
who make no demands
upon him, who never
speak back, and who can
never say no. There is no
exchange of respect, no
exchange of love, and
nothing more than the us-
ing of women as sex ob-
jects for his individual
and inverted sexual plea-
sure.
Men, to look at porn is
to commit adultery. Jesus
said, "You have heard
that it was said to those

commit adultery.' But I
say to you that whoever
looks at a woman to lust
for her has already com-
mitted adultery with her

"My husband began us-
ing porn .as. a teenager..
What was once an adoles-
cent hobby became the'
'other woman' in our
marriage. At first it was .
our intimacy that suf- 1
fered. Then, his pastime
grew into an addiction
that then started to in-
clude more serious forms
of 'adultery.' He was go-
ing to strip bars and .
sleeping with prostitutes.
He was often late, with
poor excuses. I noticed
our money disappearing
and never suspected he
was spending nearly $500
a week to feed his addic-
tion."
"Me? I felt responsible,
ugly, ashamed, alone and
hopeless. Why would he
look at another woman
unless I wasn't pretty or
sexy enough? Friends re-
jected my idea that his
porn use was ruining our
relationship. They told
me to be sexier, more sex-
ually responsive and
available so that he
wouldn't look elsewhere.
I tried all these things
only to find they didn't
work. I ended up feeling
l i ke a failure, as a wife
and a lover. Now I know
it wasn't me."
"When we got help I
found out his pornogra-
phy use began before our
marriage, as far back as.
his youth. Not only was it
not my fault it had noth-
ing to do with me at all.
A after much counseling,
we both understand that
he entered our marriage
thinking I would cure all
his se\ problems. No
wonder he was so disap-
pointed and angry. We're
still together. We are liv-
ing proof that a pornogra-
phy or sex addiction does
not have to mean the end
of your relationship."

Otto E. Williams Jr., a former resident of Hamilton County,
passed away on May 19, 2006, as a result of a motorcycle ac-
cident in Gainesville. Williams attended school at South.
Hamilton Elementary in White Springs, and graduated from
Hamilton County High School in 1987.
"Otto was a very respectable young man and a conscien-
tious student during the years when I taught him at South,"
Johnny Bullard, former principle of South Hamilton Elemen-
tary stated. "He worked in the tobacco fields for my. father, '!
the late Wade Bullard, and my brother, Jerry Lawrence
Bullard. He had a great love for family and was very devoted
to all the members of his family. Our state has lost a 'shining '
light,' and he will be missed by many, including me."
Williams enlisted in the United States Navy after graduation
where he earned many awards and commendations including the
Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Humanitarian Medal, Sea Ser.. ice
Deployment.Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Award, and Nationa I
Defense Service Award. He was also a member of the Navy Sea I.
Williams' mother, Martha Morgan,, lives in Jasper.

Major League All-Stars place
second in District 1 tournament

The Hamilton County Major League (12-and-under)
All-Stars competed for the district championship in Lake
City this past weekend. Hamilton made a good showing

up.
Hamilton drew the #1 seed Union County for Game 1
and elected to go with ace Derek Johnson who pitched
an outstanding game for six innings, holding Union
scoreless and then hitting RBI-scoring Gerald Bristol
from second base in a close 1-0 win.
Hamilton's bats were unable to overcome a close sec-
ond game with Suwannee County that ended in a 2-1
loss, putting them in the loser's bracket for the first time.
With their backs against the wall, Hamilton faced
Union County for an elimination game. Johnson once
again performed flawlessly, helping his team to a 4-2 de-
cision, sending the senior-laden Union team home and
giving Hamilton a shot at the title game,
Facing the undefeated Suwannee team and having to
win back-to-back games proved to be more than Hamil-
ton could overcome, ending in a 5-0 loss in the champi-
onship game.
Coach Michael Lessman said he had to "slay the giant"
for Suwannee by using his ace pitcher against Union.
Hamilton eliminated Union but it crippled his pitching
staff who had. to face Live Oak's ace in the title game, he
noted.
"Our players can hold their heads high because they
beat the two best teams in North Florida," Coach Less-
man said. "We took two of three games last weekend
from a well coached, great hitting Suwannee Valley team
to advance here and were two for two against another
loaded Union County team this weekend. I haven't ever
seen two better teams at this level and I'm disappointed
that one of them can't represent our district at regionals.
Nothing against Suwannee but those guys are better top
to bottom than anyone around here; they were just un-
fortunate to have to face Derek."

the invitation read "A
Ketchup Party." The idea
was to catch up with close
friends and relatives for a
weekend of laughter, cele-
brations and maybe even
some ketchup if you used
it on a grilled hamburger.
There was so much won-
derful barbeque and other
delicious food that seemed
to ride on a tide of good
conversation and laughter
as it all streamed -endlessly
from the back lawn of the
historic Carver-Ward home
(the big blue house) next to
S&S Food Store on U.S. 41.
Gail Ward celebrated her
birthday, a little late. It was
on June 18, but she sched-
uled her belated celebra-
tion to accommodate
friends and relatives from
all around the United
States. The "ketchup" par-
ty kicked off with a bar-
beque on Friday, July 15,
and proceeded through the
weekend with a good old
fashioned "house party" -
gallons of coffee, lots of
party foods, and just tons
of fun and more laughter
than you can imagine.

shining like new money in
beautiful summer time
clothes, and I hope every-
one had a marvelous time
on this family outing.

Summerprogram visits PCS Phosphate
A Natural Resources and Water Quality Education-
al Program was recently held at Central Hamilton El-
ementary (CHE) in Jasper. Fifteen children participat-
ed in the program that was coordinated by Greg .
Hicks, Hamilton County Extension Office, and Julie'
Gant and Paula Rudser, both of the CHE Summer En-
richment Program. Topics covered during the educa-
tional program included the importance of not pollut-
ing the groundwater, recycling and tree products.
On June 19, the group was given a tour of PCS
Phosphate in White Springs by Rob Wolfe, PCS Public
Relations. Barry Baker, a PCS environmental lab em-
ployee, gave a presentation to the group about the lo-
cal ecosystem. The group then went on a fossil hunt
whereithey found many shark's teeth and other fos-
sils. -
The group also took a trip to the Florida Museum of
Natural History and the Butterfly Rainforest at the
University of Florida in Gainesville on June 29.

Jasper Explorers learn about law eliforcemient
A group of teens interested in a career in
law enforcement have formed the Jasper
Explorers. The group is supervised by Ptl.
Martin Lee, Ptl. Tammy Williams (Jasper
Police Department), Johnny McDaniel (De-
partment of Corrections), and Karonda Lee
(involved parent).
The Jasper Explorers is a youth develop-
ment and career education program cen-
tered around law enforcement. The group
will learn about crime prevention, commu-
nity policing, traffic control, finger print-
ing, and patrol procedures.
"The group has shown a lot of interest
and worked really hard to get the post
started," Ptl. Williams said. Current mem-
bers are Post Captain Quinteda Mack, Lt.
Gernard Smith, Sgt. lesha Lee, Cpl. Nekia
Hawkins, Vaneshia Smith, Shawnia Ervin,
Michelle'a Henderson and Shantiah Mack.
The Explorers plan to participate in com-
munity activities, such as fingerprinting,
crowd control and clean-up projects. The
post also plans to join the Florida Police
Explorers Association, which meets quar-
terly in different locations across the state.
As part of the Association, the Jasper Ex-
plorers will have the opportunity to meet
other Explorers and learn different law en-
forcement skills.

would re-record
several times to make
sure that when the

of what we were
trying to sing," stated

"It's also being
played on local radio
stations," added
Jones.
This CD is
dedicated in the
memory of Jones'
mom, Pam Philman.
"This is my first
release," said Jones,

thoughts we were
singing about."

restore power interrupted by the sorm's fury.

* If you have a gasoline-powered electric generator, use it in well-

Bronson announces changes to pest control rules

Charles H. Bronson is an-
nouncing that a set of new rules
has gone into effect that pro-
vide improved protection for
consumers who contract with
pest Control companies for ter-
mite service.
All contracts issued by pest
control companies for termite
control must now clearly tell
consumers if the. contracts cov-
er subterranean termites, dry-
wood termites, or both. If they
don't cover Formosan termites,
a particularly aggressive form
of subterranean termite, the
company has to clearly state
that. ,
"The average homeowner
may not understand that there
are differences in the types of
termites that can invade their
homes as well as differences in
the kinds of protections that ad-
dress each insect," Bronson
said. "We have found that
many people do not realize
they are not protected against
one or the other until their
home is damaged and it is too
late."
Another important change
that goes into effect immediate-
'ly is that companies that per-
form only "spot" treatments
post that information on treat-
ment. stickers in the structure.
Existing homes. may be treated
prior to being sold, especially
when pre sale inspections show
some termite activity. Sellers
may opt for a less expensive
spot treatment rather than a full
treatment. Until now the treat-
ment sticker did not have to
specify that it was a "spot"
treatment.
"This is especially important
for home buyers," Bronson
said. "Buyers' of existing
homes may be told that a house
has been treated before they
buy it, but not informed the
treatment was only to a limited
part of the building. Now they
will know if the treatment was
full or partial."
Other changes in the contract
rule require that pest control
companies retreat infestations
covered by a contract within
ninety days (180 days for
multiunit structures). Previous-
ly there was no time limit on
,when the service had to be pro-
vided. Companies are now also
prohibited from den\ ing re-
treatment or repairs if they
were aware of a construction
defect or other condition con-
ducive to termite infestation,
such as a water leak, and did
not inform the property owner
and allow them to repair it.
Nearly all contracts have
limitations and exclusions un-
der which treatment or'repair
does not have to be done, for
example if there is a plumbing
leak. Prior to this rule change, a
company could be aware of .a
defect, collect renewals for
several years, and then deny re-
treatment ,or repairs when they
became necessary. Pest control
companies have a year to
change their contracts to reflect
these requirements.
"The practices these rules re-
quire are already common to all
good pest control companies.
