gela Smith Howell, daughter of Wayne
and Shirley Smith of Jasper, is struggling
with a rare disease that is literally stran-
gling her. She has been diagnosed with
tracheomalacia, which causes degeneration of the carti-
lage in the wall of the trachea, according to her sister,
Sharon Davis.
In February, Howell began having difficult\ breathing
and con-tantiv felt tired, Davis said. Tests showed the
softening had extended down the respiratory tract almost
to Howell's lung and that the trachea was 80% closed.
About three years ago, doctors had removed Howell's
right lung due to cancer. To compensate, the left lung
has increased in size, which caused her heart to shift
into the cavity, and pulled the trachea across her spine.
Howell has also had a stent inserted in her trachea,
which failed to provide the support the trachea needed.

ber.
I am 51 years old and
have lived my whole life in
Hamilton County. I gradu-
ated from Hamilton Coun-
ty High School in 1972 and
attended North Florida
Community College fol-
lowing high school gradua-
tion. I grew up farming
with my family. I became a
full-time partner in 1972 of
Deas Brothers Farms. With
God's blessing, hard work,
and strategic business deci-
sions our farm continues to
thrive in spite of the eco-
nomical struggles for farm-
ers as a whole.
My parents are Elizabeth
Deas, and the late Quinteen
"Sport" Deas. I have been
married 26 years to Becky
and have two sons, Daniel,
19, and Zach, 12. Daniel is
a 2005 graduate of HCHS
and attends NFCC. Zach.
will be attending seventh
grade at Hamilton County
High School in the fall.
Over the years I have
had experience serving on
several boards, committees,
and organizations locally,
regionally, and nationally.

vice Advisory Board,
Hamilton County Cattle-
man Association, Hamilton

Church Board.
The school system of
Hamilton Coutnty has
grown and has been
through many changes in
the past few years. Though
some of the changes were
intended to raise the stan-
dard of excellence of learn-
ing for our children, some
may have had the opposite
effect. I believe with my ex-
perience in a successful
business and my service on
various boards, that I will
be able to serve the chil-
dren, parents, teachers, and
residents of Hamilton
County with confidence
and impartiality.
My opportunities to
serve in a variety of organi-
zations have taught me
man\ things about work-
ing with others, as well as
representing others. I have
learned to be fair, under-
standing, responsible, and
trustworthy, and to stay
optimistic in times of ad-
versity. I have learned to
work with others to find
solutions to issues, not de-
manding my own way; but,
to listen to all sides before
making a decision. I have
learned not to judge too
quickly and to admit when:
I am wrong. I have learned
to think before I react and
to think outside of the box
to find the best answer.
My only agenda is for
the children of Hamilton
County to have the best ed-
ucation possible. I pledge
to do my best for our chil-
dren. Your vote on Septem-
ber 5, will be greatly appre-

pice, of the Suwannee Val-
ley area. Since 2003,
Wineberg has served as the
administrator of Haven
Hospice in the Tri-Coun-
ties area.

Nursing Center in Jasper
following an extended ill-
ness. Mrs. Zatzke was born
in Arcadia, California, and
was a homemaker. She
moved to the area from
Pine Grove, Alabama, three
years ago.
Survivors include her
husband of 63 years, Frank
W. Zatzke of Jasper; two
sons: Robert "Bob" Zatzke
of California, and William
"Will" Zatzke of Arizona;
seven grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.

held Thursday, June 15,
2006, at Evergreen Ceme-
tery with Pastor Jerry

Avriett, age 83, of
Jennings, Florida,
passed away Wednesday,
May 31, 2006, at Suwannee
Valley Nursing Center in
Jasper, Florida, following
an extended illness. Ms.
Avriett was born in Hamil-
ton County, Florida, on Jan-
uary 4, 1923, to the late
Allen James Roebuck and
Minnie Octavia Roebuck.
She was a member of Oak
Grove Church of Christ.
Survivors include several
nieces, nephews, great-
nieces, great-nephews, and
many cousins.
Funeral services were
held Saturday, June 3, 2006,
in the chapel of Harry T.
Reid Funeral Home with
Mr. Nick Law Jr., Mr. Ho-
race Royals Jr. and Mr.
Charles Law officiating.
Interment followed in
Oak Grove Cemetery. Har-
ry T. Reid Funeral Home
was in charge of arrange-
ments.

The Blessing
There is great power in
blessings. The Bible
shows that God blesses
us and in turn we can
bless others (Gen. 27:33,
Deut\7:14, 28:4; 1 Sam
25:33; Prov. 5:18). God
has put great value and
power in the spoken
.word, especially when
we speak his words as a
blessing upon ourselves
or others.
Isaiah 55:10-11, shows
the power the spoken
word has upon our lives:
"For as the rain comes
down, and the snow
from heaven, and do not
return there, but water
the earth, and make it
bring forth and bud, that
it may give seed to the
sower and bread to the
eater: so shall My word
be that goes forth from
My mouth; It shall not
return to me void, but it
shall accomplish what I.
please, and it shall pros-
per in the thing for
which I sent it." (Empha-
sis mine.)
The word of God exists
as a reality and has with-
in itself the power of its
own fulfillment. Formal
words of blessing or
cursing also have the
same power of self-ful-
fillment. Proverbs 18:21
says that "death and life
are in the power of the
tongue." Therefore we
must watch what we say
and speak blessings and
positive words.

Blessing and cursing re-
leases super human
power that could bring
to pass the content of the
curse or the blessing.
I asked a group of men
incarcerated in the
County Jail once, "How
many of them were told
that they would not
amount to anything or
that they would end up
in jail?" To a man every
one of them said all they
heard through life was
negative comments.
What we hear shapes
our lives.
That is why it is so im-
portant for each one of
us to speak blessings,
and especially for fathers
and mothers to speak
positive words over their
children. When someone
blesses you in God, your
promises begin to unlock
in a new way. The char-
acter of God in the be-
ginning was creative. He
had a plan for each one
of us for increase, and
blessings (Gen. 1:28). ,
The literal translation
of Matthew 7:7 is, "Ask
and keep on asking, seek
and keep on seeking,
knock and keep on
knocking, and that
which is closed will
come open."
God really wants us to
speak out for the bless-
ings He has in store for
us. James 4:2 says that
"you do not have be-
cause you do not ask."
Ask God for your bless-
ings and then speak
blessings on others espe-
cially your own family.'
I speak God's blessing
upon you and I encour-
age you to speak God's
blessing on others so the
doors of God's promises
would open to you.

essential oils of plants to
promote health and well-be-

Folk Culture Center State

Known as aromatherapy,
the use of oils extracted
from plants such as laven- $100 fee for all four one-

HEALTH CARE
The 2006 Budget contains major funding for our seniors and
children alike. It restores Medicaid coverage for adult hearing
and vision services, and expands the amount of time nursing
home staff can spend with individual patients each day. This
increase will serve to ensure our citizens are properly cared
for in nursing home facilities. The 2006 Legislature extended
the Florida KidCare program to include children ages 1-4 who
were previously ineligible for the program. Low income par-
ents can now' purchase high quality health coverage at low
cost, for all of their children..
JUSTICE
The state budget provides funds for the local Sheriff's office to
contract with the Department of Juvenile Justice to administer
a new STAR juvenile program to help our troubled youth.
This program replaces the previous boot camp program
which was eliminated during the 2006 Legislative Session.

* Public Records:
I sponsored and the Legislature passed House Bill 1563
which gives .the Clerks of* the Court the authority to
remove confidential information from a published court
record. With this legislation, we protect .our citizens from
the potential for invasion of privacy and also limit oppor-
tunities.for identity theft.
Oyster Surcharge & Oyster Planting:
I sponsored and the Legislature passed House Bill 1249
which eliminated the "unjust" fifty-cent surcharge placed
on each bag of oysters harvested and sold in Franklin
County. .This bill also provides recurring annual funding
for oyster management and restoration.
*Education:
Funding public education was a priority for the 2006
Legislature. A combined $31.9 billion was appropriated
for Pre-kindergarten, K-12, community colleges and, uni-
versities. District 10 Public Schools received up to 11.7%
increases over last year, and $13.2 million.in special facili-
ty funding to complete new school construction.
Statewide Distance Learning:
Funding continues for the horticulture industry assuring
technological and practical advancements. This distance
learning initiative provides training and services and has
a significant impact for the horticulture communities both
in the district and statewide.

The 2006 Legislative Session proved to be exciting and challenging.
Legislators were met with many tough issues and concerns that
thankfully were able to be resolved for the citizens of this great State.
Our citizens, ranging from the youngest to the elderly, will benefit
from an abundance of new revenues made available in this year's
slate budget.

Noted Weather Channel Hurricane Expert, Dr. Steve Lyons
met with House Members during the 2006 Legislative Session
to bring them up to date on the projections for the 2006 hurri-
cane season. Rep. Kendrick and Dr. Lyons discussed the over
300 miles of District 10 Gulf coastline. Both encourage coastal
and inland citizens to "be prepared" for the 2006 hurricane
season.
To encourage and assist
Florida citizens to prepare
for the hurricane season,
the Legislature established
and provided a 12-day
sales tax-free holiday that
exempts essential, items
needed during hurricanes,
such as flashlights, coolers, batteries and generators. A $250
million fund for hurricane mitigation was established to help
Floridians prepare their homes to withstand hurricane

rookie year of television.
Starting on the local FOX
network affiliates in Talla-
hassee,. Albany, Ga., and
Columbus, Ga., the trio has
made huge growth to the
national and -international
levels of television with
their show "Southern
Backwoods Adventures."
Beginning Jan. 1, "South-
ern Backwoods Adven-
tures" began airing on The
Men's Outdoors and
Recreation Network and
Wild TV, reaching over 30
million households.
Co-host Michael Lee
says, "To be on at this lev-
el has been our dream
from day. one; now that we
are here it is very intimi-
dating at times. When you
are. making phone calls to
some of the most well
known people in the out-
door industry, seeing them
at outdoor ,shows and in
the field, it can be very
overwhelming. You really
realize where you stand.
Many of the people we talk
.to are very notable in the
industry, extremely ap-
proachable, and seem very
much grounded despite
their popularity. It is really
a cool thing to be apart of."
Lee adds, "The outdoor
aspect of the business is by
far the most, rewarding
part. Taking a person, of
any age and ability, and
letting them hunt their first
animal or catch their
largest fish is an awesome
and humbling experience
in itself. We try to give
back to our viewers as
much as possible and in-
clude the average person,
just like us, in as much of
our shows as possible. We
are just extremely thankful
and honored that people
take the time to watch
what we bring to outdoor
television each week."
When asked, about the
amount of work it has tak-
en to get to this level, co-
host and producer Kevin
Knighton ,says, "It has
been a long, hard road, but
we enjoy every minute of it
to the fullest. We take each
day and each adventure as
a blessing and keep our
goals focused at full speed
ahead. Our main goal is to
keep this work fun. After
all, if it's not fun, why
bother?"
The trio, hailing from
Valdosta, (Lee and
Wetherington) and Braii-
ford, (Knighton), ap-
proaches the outdoors
with the common outdoors
person in mind.
"We try to show what
the average person goes
through on their quests for
trophies in the outdoors.
Getting to hunt and fish
some awesome places is
amazing and comes with'
the job, but that doesn't
guarantee anything! Many
miles have been put on our
vehicles and lots of them.,
go un-rewarded, but when
you get that trophy animal
on video when it all comes
together, it is an awesome
experience," says co-host
Wetherington. "We're just
average people with an
above average show and
loving every minute that
we have in the outdoors."

NFCC rolls out NFCC Men's
Basketball Academy
North Florida Commu-
nity College is rolling out
the red carpet for its new
basketball academy de-
signed to attract African-
American males with var-
sity basketball experience.
The program is in the
process of recruiting 24 to
30 young men from the
surrounding area to enroll
as full-time students and
participate in a structured
basketball development
program. NFCC will hold
open tryouts Saturday,
July 8 from 9 a.m. until 2
-p.m. at the Colin P. Kelly
Gym on the NFCC cam-
pus in Madison.
' The academy will oper-
ate as a preparatory pro-
gram and club level sport,
,as opposed to an intercol-
legiate activity. The bas-
ketball academy works in-
dividually with students
to hone their academic
and. sports skills to.pre-
pare them for possible re-'
cruitment to intercolle-
giate programs. Scholar-
ship and/or financial aid
opportunities are avail-
able for qualified African-
American men with either
a high school or GED
diploma.

an opportunity at two lev-
els: One, to attract more
minority, males from the
district to our c lege
through the ac demy;
and, two, the p ssibility
of greater minority partic-
ipation overall at NFCC,"

Marcus Hawkins, a bas-
ketball standout at North
Georgia State and assis-
tant coach at, Madison
County High last year,
and Devona Sewell who
will coordinate academic
advising for academy stu-
dents. Adrian Dorsey, as-
sistant baseball coach,
will oversee conditioning
and physical training.
Saturday's activities in-
clude tryouts in the morn-
ing, a complimentary
lunch, and an information
session in the afternoon

In addition to sport,
skills training, the project
offers academic support
and mentoring, as well as
social education instruc-
tion to 'improve the suc-
cess rate of students. Stu-

tract affirming their com-
mitment to academic and
athletic goals.

related to me about the
blackberries on their place
and that his brother had
brought them an old fash-
ioned blackberry "doobie."
A little rock 'n' roll never hurt anybody.
A doobie is a colloquial
name for a deep .dished
. blackberry cobbler filled
with doughy dumplings.
Some of my fondest child-
hood memories are of pick-
ing blackberries with my
maternal grandmother, the
late Annie Taylor. I had not
thought of blackberry
"doobie" in a long time,
but the memories they
brought back are some of
the reasons that I write
each week.
Our very close friend,

Gatlinburg, Tenn. The girls
were glad to go along for the
ride. They spent Saturday
night in Dillard, Ga. Also on
the way up, they stopped in
Franklin, N.C., for an "ice
cream break." He told the
girls that this was where
Mrs. Norris grew up, (this is
an aside from me Wade
and I ate many a banana
split at the Dairy Queen
where they stopped when
we would be in Franklin).
Going through the Smoky
Mountain National Park,
they stopped and climbed
Clingmann's Dome (which
was literally quite breathtak-
ing)! Kevin said his daddy
made him climb it when he
was a boy, now he was go-
ing to make his children
climb it too. While in Gatlin-
burg, Rachel and Mallory
were able to spend time vis-
iting with some of their
Arkansas "Farm Bureau
Friends" they have grown
up with, and usually see
only once a year at this par-
ticular meting. A highlight
of the trip for them was rid-
ing the sky-lift and alpine
slide, and ice-skating at
Ober Gatlinburg, paying
Hillbilly golf, and going to
the Ripley's Aquarium.
Katherine Harris who has
announced her candidacy
for US Congressman from
the Sarasota area, visited
with friends around the ta-
bles at H&F on Saturday af-
ternoon. She was accompa-
nied by two of her aides.
Harris was here for only a
short time, but made indefi-
nite statements regarding
her platform, her feelings
and her plans if and when
she is elected. At the dose, in
an informal chat, those pre-
sent were talking about how

group met at the White
Springs Diner on Saturday,
June 17. The program was

the diner since Wayne and
Rose constructed their ad-
dition, but it is very nice.
The food was delicious
and the service, "superb."
Later that day, Mama
and I lunched at the
Telford Hotel, where we
enjoyed a visit with Janet
Moses. She is so very tal-
ented and is most gener-
ous to share with others.
She has been working on
some painted doors for
Carolyn Cannon that are
covered with painted wis-
teria.

ing one given to me by
Rheba. Lee, Jan Hunter,

back on after flooding.
* Never replace a fuse or touch a circuit breaker with wet hands, or
while standing on a wet or damp surface.
* If you see a downed power line, call SVEC to report Its location.
* Avoid driving over downed power lines. Avoid puddles near
downed power lines.
* Plug only Individual appliances Into portable generators. Never
connect a generator to wall outlets, building wiring or your home's
electrical system.
* If you require transportation assistance during an evacuation,
register In advance with the Civil Defense and Office of Emergency
Management in your county.
*To prepare for outages, ItIs wise to have plenty of fresh batteries
for flashlights and radios.
* If you have a gasoline-powered electric generator, use It In well-
ventilated areas and only plug In Individual appliances. Never
connect a generator to a wall outlet of your home or building's
electrical system since that can cause damage to your equipment
and can be a life-threatening danger to your family, neighbors and
repair crews. Be sure to have adequate fuel for your generator and ,
manage consumption by running It for only a few hours at a time.
* Prepare a list of essential items you would nobd in case you are
evacuated from your home and have them readily available. Some of
these Items could Include medications, Insulin, contact
lenses/supplies, extra eyeglasses and denture needs.
If your power goes out, wait at least five minutes before
reporting It to SVEC office In order to give our
automatic equipment time to restore power.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that
smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and has
negative health impacts on people at all stages of life. It harms unborn
babies, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. Surprisingly,
at least a quarter of the United States' population still continues to light
up, says the CDC.
Cigarette smoking has decreased over the years by at least 50
percent (nearly 45 percent of the population smoked during the 1960s).
But there are those who continue to put themselves at risk despite the
warnings of doctors, the government, friends and family. In addition,
many smokers subject spouses and children to secondhand smoke,
needlessly endangering not only themselves, but their loved ones as
well.
Smoking has many health implications. Here are a few to consider,
courtesy of the U.S. Surgeon General:
Cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) in tobacco smoke damage
important genes that control the growth of cells, causing them to grow
abnormally or to reproduce too rapidly.
The carcinogen benzoapyrene binds to cells in the airways and major
organs of smokers.
Smoking affects the function of the immune system and may
increase the risk for respiratory and other infections.
Nicotine reaches the brain within 10 seconds after smoke is inhaled.
It has been found in every part of the body and in breast milk.
By smoking around infants, you put them at a greater risk for Sudden
.Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
The body produces antioxidants to help repair damaged cells.
Smokers have lower levels of antioxidants in their blood than do
nonsmokers.
Here is a look at the major illnesses that can occur as a
result of smoking.
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Cigarette smoking has been linked to many illnesses, including heart
disease and stroke. Smoking can cause coronary heart disease, which
results from atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. Toxins in the blood
from smoking cigarettes contribute to the development of
atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a progressive hardening of the
arteries caused by the deposit of fatty plaques and the scarring and
thickening of the artery wall. Inflammation of the artery wall and the
development of blood clots can obstruct blood flow and cause heart
attacks or strokes.
LUNG CANCER
Cancer is the second leading cause of death and was among the first
diseases linked to smoking, says the Surgeon General. Cigarette
smoking is responsible for most cases of death in conjunction with
cancer.'lt'can caloselung cancer as well as cancers in the mouth, throat
and bladder. Men who smoke are more likely to develop lung cancer than
their female counterparts.-- yet the risk is high regardless of age or sex.
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
Smoking can affect reproduction and fertility in a number of ways. It
has been shown that smoking can make it harder for women to get
pregnant. Should a woman get pregnant, smoking can cause many

Smoking contributes to a number of health problems, including
heart disease, cancer, reproductive problems and more.

placenta prematurely separates from the wall of the uterus. This can lead
to preterm delivery, stillbirth or early infant death. In babies who make it to
term, smoking can cause low birth weight and birth defects. Yet despite
these warnings, only 20 to 25 percent of women quit smoking upon
learning they are pregnant, says the CDC.
COMMIT TO QUIT
Nicotine is a very potent chemical. Some argue that it produces a
greater physical addiction than heroin or cocaine. Nicotine produces a
feeling of euphoria in smokers. Once the drug reaches the brain, it can
cause a calming and soothing feeling, which is what draws many people
back for more. Yet, smoking can be stopped if you are committed to
quitting. There are a number of nicotine replacement products available
that can help you gradually wean off of cigarettes. Just keep in mind that it
can take up to 72 hours for full nicotine detoxification to take place in the
body -- releasing you from the physical withdrawal symptoms. However,'
the' mental' dependence cduld be equally 'as trung. ` ..
Quitting smoking at any stage in your smoking career provides
immediate health benefits. Your chances for contracting diseases drop
and, with time, your lungs can gradually heal themselves and function
properly again. For help in quitting, visit the American Cancer Society at

Law enforcement
agencies in the area are
joining others across the
state in an effort to save
those who don't buckle
up. The. "Buckle Up In
Your Truck" campaign
will be in full force
throughout the state.
The National High-
way Traffic Safety Ad-
ministration (NHTSA)
reported that pickup
truck drivers and their
passengers are among
the least likely motorists
to regularly use safety
belts. In 2005, Florida's
observed safety belt us-
age among pickup truck
drivers and passengers
was less than 62 percent
as compared to almost
75 percent in cars and
over 79 percent in vans
and SUV's.
According to the most
recent national data, 66
percent of the 29 pickup
truck cab occupant fatal-
ities in Alachua County
were unbuckled.
Buckle Up In Your
Truck, a statewide ini-
tiative funded by the
Florida Department of
Transportation, is coor-
dinated in conjunction
with the NHTSA, state
and local highway safe-
ty, and law enforcement
leaders across an eight-
state region in the
Southeastern U.S.
Florida had the high-
est number of pickup
truck fatalities among
the eight Southeastern
states with 343 deaths in
2004, according to na-
tional data. This reflects
a nine percent increase
from the number of
pickup truck fatalities as
compared to the previ-
ous year.
"No more warnings.
No more excuses. We
want pickup truck dri-
vers and passengers to
always buckle up," said
Lieutenant Michael Bur-
roughs, Florida High-
way Patrol. "With the
rising number of fatali-
ties, it is crucial to buck-
le up-every trip, every
time. We will do what-
ever it takes to send this
message loud and
clear."
The effect of non-safe-
ty belt usage by pickup
truck occupants is evi-
dent in fatal crash statis-
tics. Research indicates
that three out of four
pickup truck occupants
killed in crashes were
not using a safety belt.
"We are in full sup-
port of law enforcement
initiatives that remind
motorists and their pas-
sengers to buckle up,"
said Florida Department
of Transportation Secre-
tary Denver Stutler.
"We truly believe that
the Buckle Up In Your
Truck campaign has the
ability to save lives
across the state through
heightened awareness
and increased safety belt
usage."
Buckling up is the sin-
gle best defense in a
pickup truck crash. It
will increase odds of
survival by as much as
80 percent in the event
of a rollover crash.
While rollovers can oc-
cur in any kind of pas-'
senger vehicle, pickup
trucks are twice as likely
to rollover as cars be-
cause they have a higher
center of gravity.
While other states in
the Southeastern region,
are targeting the Buckle
Up In Your Truck mes-
sage to specific areas
with high numbers of
pickup truck fatalities,
Florida is one of only
two states launching the
campaign statewide as
pickup truck occupants
are over-represented in
fatal crashes and have
the lowest safety belt us-
age rate compared to
other vehicle types in
the state. Television and
radio public service an-
nouncements developed
by NHTSA for this
eight-state initiative will
air throughout Florida
in all the major media
markets to help increase
awareness.
