Playground planned

Golson bins

rubbish to

buy new

equipment
BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
When a tornado hit a school in
Enterprise, Ala., in early 2007,
the only thing left standing was
'the playground.
The man who designed that
playground is planning two new
ones for Golson Elementary
School in Marianna.
On Thursday, he brought his
designs to show staffers there.
There's 'one hitch money,
naturally.
But fund raisers and a grant
application are under way, and
the public can help by recycling.
Golson representative Anita
Hailing said a recycling bin is
being placed at the old Marianna
High School for the purpose of
helping fund the new play-
grounds. Under a deal worked
out with Jackson County's recy-
cling program, all money raised
from the materials placed in that,
bin off Daniels Street will go to
the playgrounds project.

"Our graduation, certifi-
cation, and placement rates
are great and we are proud
to be instrumental in pro-
ducing a new generation of
educators, business lead-
ers, and health profession-
als for our district," Dr.
Myers said. "As a new state
college, we will be in the

position to offer additional
bachelor's degree pro-
grams to expand educa-
tional access to our stu-
dents."
"We are pleased that so
many students are taking
advantage of the opportu-
nities available at Chipola,"
Chipola President Dr. Gene
Prough said. "It is our goal
to make college more

in the case. Sutton's bond was set at
$55,000 and Morgan's at $15,000.
Both remained at the Jackson County
jail as of early Monday.
Lane said Morgan eventually con-
fessed to the scheme.
He said shortly after the car was
seen burning off Mount Tabor Road
with no one inside Sept. 8 last year,

Morgan called the 2005 Dodge
Stratus in as stolen.
According to Lane, she initially
said she'd lost the keys to her car
while at a park with her friends, and
that she had left the area for a time.
When she returned, she said, the car
was gone.
She subsequently changed her

story, telling Lane she hired Sutton
for a sum of $100 to burn the car.
According to Lane, Morgan said she
followed Sutton to the bum site and
drove him home after the car was set
on fire.
The insurance company was noti-
fied of the alleged circumstances and
never paid the claim, Lane said.

B\ DUSTIN KENT

The top-ranked Chipola

title Saturday night, while tying
the school record of 24 straight
wins with an 89-56 victory over
the Tallahassee Eagles in

Chipola won without leading
scorer Casey Mitchell, who sat'
due to an ankle injury suffered

The Indians didn't seem to
miss him, shooting 51 percent

Torye Pelham led the way with
14 points and 10 rebounds. Josh
Sain added 14 points, Gary
Flowers 12, Darrell Williams 11
and Justin Brownlee and Jeremy
Jacob had 10 each.
"It really says a lot about our.

Malone looks to improve this season

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTs EDITOR
After a disappointing end to the 2008 sea-
son, the Malone Tigers will open 2009 \\ ith
an eye on a deep playoff run.
The Tigers suffered a heartbreaking loss o10
Laurel Hill in the first round of the pla offis
last season. But they return five seniors this
season, led by starting pitcher Aaron Conrad.
Dayvon Larry, Kevin Warren, Derek Welch
and Chris Williams also return as seniors for
the defending district'champions.
However, Malone coach Max Harknder
said there's more uncertainty going in this
season than there was last year, meaning the
Tigers may not hit their stride until the second
half of the season.
"I don't think we'll be playing our best
baseball early," the coach said. "It %% ill take us;
a little while to figure it out, because last ear
everybody knew pretty much x here they
were going to play. This year, we've got some
kids who have played the infield % ho \till
have to play outfield, and vice versa. We'll
have to work all that stuff out."
The Tigers lost a pair of major impact pla -
ers from. last season in pitcher/shortstop
Justin Bryan and third baseman Tre\or
Blackburn. '
Harkrider said replacing them non't be
easy.
"Those guys did a lot for us offensively."
the coach said. "They hit it real %%ell. You
could stick JB anywhere and he could play
any position. We'll miss that."
Conrad is still playing for the Tigers' bas-
ketball team, although he could be back b\
the time Malone opens the regular season
Feb. 25 in Donaldsonville against Seminole
County.
Conrad and sophomore Derek Orshall will
be the top two pitchers for the Tigers this sea-
son.
"They'll be pretty steady," Harkrider said
"They're both experienced."
The third pitching spot will go to one of
three players -. Warren, junior Jeffrey
Pittman and junior Will Dunaway.
Offensively, the departures of Bryan and
Blackburn leave a big hole.that will have to
be filled by a collection of players.
"Aaron Conrad, Blake Henson, Kevin
Warren, Dayvon Larry, -Jeffrey Pittman,
Derek Orshall, they're all going to have to
step up," Harkrider said. "That's the fun and
challenging part of it, seeing these guys step
up. Every year it's a different team. Last year
doesn't matter. We're looking forward to this
year."

Two local high school softball
teams competed in the
Blountstown Pre-Season Softball
Classic Saturday. Sneads walked
away with two wins, one coming
at the expense of their county
rival, Marianna.
Sneads took a 7-0 win from
Franklin County in their first
game, before handing Marianna a
7-1 loss in the second game.
Karissa Childs started for
Sneads and went four innings,
allowing one hit and no runs
before being relieved by Ashlen
Wilson. The reliever threw one
inning and allowed one hit.
Offensively, Sneads was led by
former Lady Bulldog Leigh
Berry, who was 2-for-2 on the
day, followed by Samantha
Culpepper, who launched one
over the fence.
In Game Two, Sneads started
Alisha Edenfield, who went the
distance before time was called in
the four inning. Edenfield gave
up one unearned run on four hits
and an error, and fanned six.
Berry, Edenfield, and Childs both
had two hits in that game, with
Culpepper collecting an RBI dou-
ble. Kayla Kelly had a single in
the game.
For Marianna, sophomore Hali
Stout started on the mound and
pitched three scoreless innings
before giving way to sophomore
Eron Milton. Milton gave up
seven runs before the game was
called.
Leading the Lady Bulldogs in
offense was Taylor Smith, with a
single and a double, followed by
Krista Griffin and Jennifer
Cramer, both with one hit each.

Malone Tiger Dayvon Larry practices hitting Monday. The Tigers hope to go fur
state playoffs this year. -Mark Skinner/Floridan,

Tigers won the district championship, the sea-
son-ending loss still leaves a bitter taste for
the Tigers, according to Harkrider.
"We felt like we should've won that game,
but Laurel Hill played better than we did and
,they deserved it," the coach said. "But it's
something I bring up every day to them to
remind them how it felt. We don't want to go
through that again, so maybe that can be our
focal point."

If the Tigers are to get back to th
and make a run, they'll have to avo
nificant injuries as they are carryii
players this season.
"We definitely can't be hurt. W
stay healthy," Hark4rider said. "V
chance to be OK, but we're on
injuries away from being not real. g
can stay healthy, we'll have a cha
some things."

when someone was down
and this was no different.
"The kids responded.
We've got 10 or 11 guys
capable of scoring 20
points; that's why this team
is. special. To have the lead-
ing scorer out and you can
still play like that says a lot
about our togetherness and
belief in each other."
With the conference race
now officially over and the
Indians sitting at 9-0, Heiar
can now afford to be patient
with Mitchell's return.
"Casey is day-to-day, but
we won't bring him back
until he can move and cut
and run without a limp," the
coach said. "We're not in a
rush to bring him back. We
need him healthy for the
stretch run."
The run of six consecu-
tive league titles started
when Heiar was an assis-
tant for' former Chipola
coach Chris Jans during the
2003-04 season.
Since taking over the fol-
lowing season, Heiar's
Indians have won the
Panhandle, one of the
toughest conferences in the
nation, every year.
"I say it-a lot, but you're
only as good as the people
you have around you,"
Heiar said. "I honestly
believe I've been surround-
ed by really good people in
my time at Chipola and I've
been successful because of
that. I don't play, I just
coach. I couldn't do it with-
out the. players and the peo-
ple who work for me."
This season, the Indians
clinched with three games
left to play in conference.
"To do it in the first nine
games is a pretty good
accomplishment," Heiar
said. "It shows a lot.about
these kids. We've had a lot
of games in the league
where we were down in the
second half and fought
back and won the game. It
says a lot about the kids and
the work that they've put in
since they've gotten to
Chipola to be successful."
When the Indians travel
to Niceville to play
Northwest Florida State
Saturday night, they'll have
a chance to break the
school record for consecu-
tive victories of 24 set
just last season.
"I think that says a lot
about that sophomore
class," Heiar said.

Following the game,
Sneads coach Kelvin
Johnson praised his team. "I
thought we played very
well. I was impressed with
our pitching."
Marianna was scheduled
to host Graceville Monday
night, while Sneads was
scheduled to host Liberty
County. Results of those
games were not available at
press time.
