warns
of scam
FLORIDAN STAFF REPORT
Florida Highway Patrol wants
the public to know that it doesn't
seek donations over the tele-
phone.
The highway patrol said in a
news release that citizens who are
solicited for donations for FHP
over the phone are potential vic-
tims of a scam.
"The FHP does not endorse
fund-raising made on behalf of its
troopers, nor does it seek dona-
tions. Law and department policy
prohibit troopers from requesting
donations. The state .of Florida
covers troopers' salaries, benefits
and equipment," the news release
said.
FHP suggested that those with
concerns about the legitimacy of
a fund-raiser should ask the per-
son soliciting the money to mail
literature that establishes the
credibility of the organization.
' If someone believes the organi-
zation is illegitimate, they may
lodge a complaint directly with
the organization or call the
Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services' Consumer

Two in jured in crash
Two people were transported with minor injuries to Jackson Hospital following this two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 90 near
Douglas Pond Road Wednesday. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a car that was traveling west on Highway 90 left the
road and overcorrected before crossing the median and strikingthis Ford Explorer, which left the road and flipped. Charges are

The committee for the Marianna Arts
Festival and BBQ Cook-Off presented more
funding to Main Street Marianna Thursday.
The money is earmarked for a Jackson
County arts and history museum.
Thursday's $5,000 donation makes a total
of $15,000 paid by festival .proceeds o'er the
last three years. The money is to be used for
the proposed museum, said festival organizer
Jonathan Fuqua.
The tentative location chosen for the muse-
um is the historical First Bank building on
McPherson Street in Marianna, according to
Main Street Marianna Executive Director
Charlotte Brunner.
The idea for the museum would be to
include local art, history and artifacts.
Jackson County and the City of Marianna
have both contributed to the development of
the future museum.
Since the Marianna festival first started, the
Jackson County Tourist Development
Council has contributed funding toward the
event each year.
A portion of the festival proceeds are then
presented to Main Street.
In 2007, the city purchased the parking lot
adjacent to the bank.building, as well as the
building itself from Wachovia Bank, for a
total of approximately $100,000.
The money was taken from Marianna's
community redevelopment association budg-
et, which also funds Main Street Marianna.

FLORIDAN STAFF REPORT
Authorities are investigating a
series of newspaper rack burgla-
ries that occurred Friday in and
around Marianna.
According to the Jackson
County Sheriff's Office, newspa-
per racks at Stephens Chevron on
Highway 71, Green's
Supermarket on Highway. 71 and
Arrow Head on U.S. Highway 90
were all burglarized early Friday
morning.
The Marianna Police
Department also reported that
racks inside the city limits were
burglarized Friday.
MPD reported two Tallahassee
newspaper racks had locks and
money removed from them.
One of those racks was located
at Grocery Outlet, and the other
was located at the Big Little, both
of which are located on Lafayette
Street.'
The police department asked
citizens for help in collecting
information about the crime.
Those with information may
call MPD at 526-3125, or JCSO
at 482-9624.

museum said Thursday that plans for the
museum's location won't be set in stone until
after that feasibility study is complete.

Water district buying riverfront property

The state plans to buy 338 acres on the
Chipola River just north of Marianna, a
step that would further protect the water-
shed and the 63 identified springs which
feed it.
At the same time, it would open up new
recreational activities for the public.
According to a news release from the
Northwest Florida Water Management.
District, hunting and fishing will be
allowed on the property.

ing naturalist Charles
Darwin and the 150th
anniversary of the publica-
tion of his book "The
Origin of Species," truly a
landmark work that
changed the world.
Celebrations and tributes,
both large and small, are
scheduled around the globe
this year, and many are
already under way.
At. The Florida State
University, two-time
Pulitzer-Prize winning
author and world-
renowned biologist E.O.
Wilson will be among the
headliners of a two-week-
long celebration of what
discoveries in science and
the humanities have meant
to modem civilization.
Wilson will join
acclaimed Harvard cosmol-
ogist Lisa Randall; famed
anthropologist Don
Johanson (co-discoverer of
"Lucy," the world's most
famous fossil); Sean B.
Carroll, noted biologist and .
author; and Ira Flatow of
National Public Radio's
"Science Friday," among
many others, for the pro-
gram, which begins March
16 and runs through March
28.
Unlike many tributes
scheduled around the
nation and the world,
Florida State's program,
named "Origins '09," is
designed to go beyond
Darwin's legacy and show
how the evolution of ideas
in fields ranging from
physics to art have shaped
what humans know not
only about life and nature
but what that knowledge
poses for the future. The
program will culminate in
a special tribute to the ori-
gins of jazz by a collabora-
tion of musicians and per-
formers from Florida
State's College of Music
and from Florida A&M
University.

Chipola, 59 are in Jackson County,
giving the community the distinction
of having the most springs of any
county in the state.

Marianna Bulldogs running back
Bradley Battles made his college choice
official on National Signing Day by sign-
ing a letter-of-intent to play for the
University of South Florida.
Battles, a three-star running back
prospect, made it official that he would
join the Bulls at a ceremony Wednesday at
Marianna High School.
The Bulldogs' back chose USF over
Kentucky and Northern Illinois.
"It's real cool," Battles said of the big
day. "I never thought this would happen.
I'm real excited about it."
Battles earned his opportunity to play at
the next level with a pair of brilliant sea-
sons in 2007 and 2008, rushing for a com-
bined 4,038 yards and 46 touchdowns on
7.7 yards per carry for MHS coach Rob
Armstrong.
On top of his rushing prowess, Battles
was a standout performer on defense, with
several schools recruiting him to play
defensive back.
A big selling point for USF, according
to both Battles and Armstrong, was the
opportunity to play running back for the
Bulls.
"The USF (offensive) coaches told
Bradley that they were going to fight the
defense. for him to stay on offense,"
Armstrong said. "I think that had a lot to
do (with Battles' decision)."
USF coaches also told Battles he could
make an immediate impact .on special
teams as a kick returned.
Battles said he just wants to get on the
field as soon as possible.
"I've talked to the (USF) coaches a lot
and they just told me to come down with a
mindframe to play and fight for a job," he
said. "I always knew I'd have a shot play-
ing there."
Battles joins a Bulls class being touted
by some recruiting experts as the best in
USF history, ranked the No. 31 class in the

Armstrong said the recruiting of Battles
was an illustration of just why the Bulls
are having so much success on the recruit-
ing trail.
"What a great job they did recruiting up
here," the coach said. "I think USF really
got a steal. It's a great fit for Bradley and I
think he'll go down there and do a great
job for them."
Armstrong, whose arrival at Marianna
two years ago mirrored Battles' ascension
.to stardom, said Wednesday's ceremony
was a proud moment for him personally.
"We had the signing with a bunch of
people there, and Bradley's got the micro-

After a disheartening, one-win
season in 2008, the Marianna
Lady Bulldogs will be looking
for a big rebound this year.
The Lady Bulldogs struggled

The good part of having such a
young team is that all of 'the'
players from last year's squad
are back.
The Lady Bulldogs will have
four seniors this year four
more than they had last year--
including three starters in Ta lor
Smith, Janna Hinson and Krista'
Griffin.
The other senior is Audra
Cramer.
Of the five freshman who
started last season, all are back
for their.sophomore seasons -

Braddy said the year of experi-
ence has served her young play-
ers well.
"They've matured more," she
said. "They've improved a great

adapted well."

After over a week full of a close
games and late-game heroics, the
Malone Tigers had no more drama left
in them Tuesday night in Chipley,
falling 62-55 to the rival Tigers.
The loss ended a six-game winning
streak, with the last four victories com-
ing on three one-point wins, and a dou-
ble-overtime victory over Sneads
Monday.
Tuesday night's game was the fourth
in five days for Malone, and coach
Steven Welch said that became evident
as the game went on.
"Yeah, I felt like (the team was tired)
in the second half especially," the coach
said. "We didn't make a shot the whole
game. We didn't shoot it at all. Our
defensive intensity went down in the
second half and Chipley played well.
"Take nothing away from Chipley,
but I just felt like we were gassed."
Malone actually led 25-23 at half-
time, but Chipley took control in the
third and carried a 42-38 advantage into
the fourth period.
AJ Roulhac led Chipley with 18
points, with Kartsen Whitson adding 13
and Leon Broxton 12.
TJ Smith led Malone with 13 points,
with Chase Leeks adding 10.

Welch said he was a little disappoint-
ed that winning streak ended, but was
glad his team can finally take a breath.
"We're definitely taking today off,"
the coach said Wednesday. "We had a
great little run there. We've got a lot of
momentum at the end of the season. I
hope we can carry it over into Friday
night and then into next week."
Malone will host Northside Methodist
Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., and host
district the following week.
The Malone Lady Tigers split their
previous two games, beating West
Gadsden 35-26 and losing to Ponce De
Leon 34-26.Vanessa Olds led the Lady
Tigers with 11 points against West
Gadsden.
Indians set for
Alumni Weekend

Chipola College baseball coach
Jeff Johnson has invited several
major league ball players to
attend Chipola College's second
annual Baseball Alumni Weekend
Friday and Saturday.
The weekend's events begin at
12:30 p.m., Friday with a Chipola
Alumni Baseball Golf Outing at
Indian Springs Golf Course.
The alumni events are sched-
uled in conjunction with the
Rahal-Miller JUCO National
Classic. Chipola, the 2007 JUCO
National Champion, will play
host to three of the top JUCO
teams in America, including
Walters State, 2006 JUCO
National Champion; the College
of Southern Nevada, 2003
National Champion; San Jacinto,
five time JUCO National
Champion and St. Petersburg
College, 2006 JUCO National
Runner-Up.
The defending state champion
Chipola Indians are ranked first
in the state FCCAA Baseball
Polls.
Panhandle conference rival
Pensacola is fifth in the poll.
Tallahassee is ninth.
The Rahal-Miller Classic
begins Friday at 12:30 p.m., with
Chipola vs. Walters State.
Chipola plays San Jacinto at 3
p.m.
The action heats up Saturday,
with a 3 p.m., game featuring
Chipola and the College of
Southern Nevada.
Several big name major league
baseball players are scheduled to
provide instruction at a Chipola
Baseball Alumni Youth Camp on
Saturday.
Kids ages 6-12 are invited to
register the morning of the camp
which is set for 10-11:30 a.m.
Cost is $50. There is no pre-regis-
tration.
An alumni game and home run
derby is set for noon Saturday at
the Chipola field.
The final event of the weekend
is a game between Florida pow-
ers Chipola and St. Petersburg
College, Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Current major leaguers expect-
ed to participate in the clinic and
home run derby, include: Russell
Martin, Adam Loewen, Jose
Bautista, Matt Gamel and Jeff
Mathis.
Mathis was drafted out of
Marianna High, but he has many
friends from Chipola, including
his brother Jake Mathis who
played for the Indians.

. Part of that was Cottondale going 10-of-19
from the free throw line in the fourth period.
It became more troublesome due to the fact
that the Gators started intentionally fouling and
putting Cottondale on the line with three min-
utes left in the game.
"They started fouling us and putting us on the
line early," Obert said. "We missed some, but at
the end we hit a couple of key ones.
"We knew it wouldn't be an easy game at
their place, but we did what we had to do to
win."
The Hornets are 15-9 on the season and host
Marianna tonight at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The Cottondale Hornets got off to a hot start
as they held off the resurgent Wewa Gators
Tuesday night in Wewahitchka for a 58-55 win.
Marcus Humose led the way for the Hornets
with 29 points, including 20 in the first half.
Drew Bellamy added 10.
Humose made six 3-pointers in the first half
to give the Hornets a 37-30 lead at the halftime
break.
Cottondale led 46-39 through three periods,
but had to hang on at the end due to nine missed
free throws in the fourth quarter.
"We played OK," Hornets coach Chris Obert
said. "We didn't knock down free throws like
we should've. We kept giving them a chance,
but we made the plays down the stretch to pull
it out."
The Gators also gave Sneads a tough game
recently, prompting Pirates coach Kelvin
Johnson to call them the best Wewa team he's
seen since he became the SHS coach.
"They're much-improved. They've been
playing everybody tough, so we knew it would
be a tough game," Obert said. "We had a com-
fortable lead in the second half, but we were
never able to pull away and they just stayed
close. We went up by 12, but we couldn't

Marianna led 34-28 at
halftime and 50-45 after

"I give it to our kids, they
persevered and overcame,"
Marianna coach Travis
Blanton said of his team.
"The last time we played
them at home, it was

(Bulldogs win). We go over
there and it's hard to tell a
kid that it's going to be a
tough battle."
Even if the Marianna
players weren't convinced
they would have a hard
time in Walton, Blanton
said he knew better.
"Last year, we were
down 21 points in the third
over there," the coach said.
"Whenever we go over
there, it's tough. There's
more pressure on us to win
the district tournament so
we don't have to go to
Walton in the playoffs.
"It's going to be tough
going to play over there for
whoever, it is. It was just a
battle."

"I know it's'going to be tough," Battles
said. "I just have to get used to the feel and
the speed of the game. I think in a year or
so, I'll be fine. I just have to work on my
speed and get bigger.' "
While excited about the future, Battles
said he will always remember his time at
Marianna High fondly, as well as his rela-
tionship with Armstrong,
"Oh yeah, I'm going to miss this a lot,"
he said. "(Armstrong) did a lot for me. He,
helped me a lot, helped make me a better
player."
