fin, of Lakeport, gave a presen-
tation, Jan. 8, at the 'Food For
Thought' program that is spon-
sored by Glades County public li-
brary. Mr. Griffin spoke about the
commercial fishing and guiding
that his family did in the Clewis-
ton and Moore Haven area of


Lake Okeechobee starting from
1921.
That is the time his dad arrived
on the west shore of the big wa-
ter. The elder Griffin was able to
catch shiners with a cane pole
in the big lake. Then he used the
shiners as bait for bass fishing
in Lake Hicpochee. At that time,
bass were a legal commercial fish
that was sold to the fish house
businesses. Seine nets were used
to harvest bluegill, crappie, shell
cracker, catfish and turtle. By the
1930's bass was no longer sold
commercially.

Recognizing National Influenza Vaccination Week


Free HiNi-Flu vaccines are
still available

Happy New Year and welcome to 2010!
Now that the New Year has begun and as
we are heading back to work and school set-
tings, it is more important than ever to think
about getting the H1N1-Flu vaccine.
January 10 to 16, 2010 is National Influ-
enza Vaccination Week (NIVW), and now
is the perfect time to understand the impor-
tance of being vaccinated.
You may hear on the news that cases of
H1N1-Flu have been decreasing, but please
think about getting an H1N1 vaccination for
you and your family members.
"Please do not be complacent about pro-
tecting yourself and your families from H 1N I
infection" said Pat Dobbins, Administrator
for the Hendry and Glades County Health
Departments. "This virus continues to cause
serious illness and deaths."
Flu experts warn that we should prepare
for a possible third wave of H1N1-Flu.
There is ample supply of the vaccine and
the Center for Disease Control and Preven-
tion (CDC) has announced that the vaccine


is now open to everyone (all ages).
Most people 6 months and older can get
the vaccine. Be sure to let your health care
provider know if you or your child has an
allergy to eggs, any other allergies, or any
medical conditions.
Please remember that the seasonal flu
vaccine will not protect you from the H1N1
Flu.
The 2009 H1N1-Flu Vaccine is made the
same way as seasonal flu vaccines. Millions
of seasonal flu vaccines have been given
safely and millions of people have all ready
safely received the H 1 N 1-Flu Vaccine.
For those who may be hesitant to receive
the vaccine by injection, healthy people from
ages 2 years to 49 years have the option to
choose a nasal spray form of the vaccine.
Also keep in mind that children aged 9
years and under will need a second dose 30
days after receiving the first dose to ensure
the vaccine will be more effective for them.

that you may bring in your family members
to get their free H1N 1-Flu Vaccination:

Glades County Gun Club
The Glades County Gun Club will hold
an open range shooting event on Saturday,
Jan. 17. The Range is located at the Glades
County Sheriffs Gun Range at Gun Club Rd
on SR 78 4.2 mi NE of US 27.
Glades residents are welcome at no
charge. Insurance requires all guests to reg-
ister, attend a short range safety briefing and
sign a waiver. Eye and ear protection is man-
datory and will be available by the club.
The gate will open at 8 a.m., registra-
tion from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., briefing at
8:45 a.m. Shooting to begin after briefing till
about 11 a.m.
Guests may be accompanied to the fir-
ing line and supervised by a club member
for safety concerns. Black Power guns are
welcome. 1st half of event is for handguns,
2nd half for rifle. For further information call

Westergaard House available
The Glades County Historical Society
announces that the restored 1920's Peter
Westergaard House on Avenue L in Moore
Haven is available for meetings.
Nonprofit organizations can reserve the
home for free. Private occasions like baby
showers, birthdays and bridal showers re-
quire a $25 clean up fee. To reserve this

Bingo helps food pantry
Bingo is offered as a fund raiser and as
entertainment beginning at 7 p.m. Bingo
will be held every Thursday until May. This
will support the Food Pantry which serves
Glades County every Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Celebrating Arbor Day in the state of Florida


Residents of Florida will celebrate Arbor
Day 2010 on January 15. While National Ar-
bor Day is held on the last Friday in April,
several states, including Florida, observe the
holiday at a time best suited for tree planting
for their residents. The best way to celebrate
Arbor Day is to plant trees. The Arbor Day
Foundation's Web site (www.arborday.org)
offers many helpful tips to celebrate the tree-
planters' holiday, from how to plant a tree to
selecting the right tree for the right place.
To find out which trees grow best in Flor-
ida, consult the Arbor Day Foundation's Har-
diness Zone Map at www.arborday.org/tree-
info. Florida has 138 cities and towns that
were honored by the Arbor Day Foundation
as a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA
recognizes communities that are committed
to its trees. More than 135 million Americans

The first Arbor Day was celebrated in
Nebraska on April 10, 1872, thanks to a
resolution proposed by Nebraska City, Neb.,
resident J. Sterling Morton. Morton, a civic
leader, agriculturist, and former newspaper
editor, urged Nebraskans to "set aside one
day to plant trees, both forest and fruit."
Today, Arbor Day is observed in all 50
states and in countries around the world.
The cabbage palmetto, sabal palmetto,
was adopted as Florida's state tree in 1953.
In 1970 the state legislature passed that a
palmetto tree should be featured on the
state seal instead of a cocoa palm.
Known for its many uses, including med-
icine and food as well as landscaping, the
palm has the ability to grow in almost any
soil.
This palm is also the most widely distrib-
uted palm in Florida.

FWC: Cold weather means pythons are sunning


During this cold snap in South Florida,
Burmese pythons in the wild may be out sun-
ning themselves in an effort to stay warm.
And that means hunters out in four South
Florida wildlife management areas (WMAs)
should be on the lookout for the unwanted,
nonnative species.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conserva-
tion Commission (FWC) reminds hunters
that they may continue to take Burmese
pythons and all other reptiles of concern
within four South Florida WMAs during the
normal course of hunting during the areas'
small-game seasons.
All properly licensed and permitted hunt-
ers have the authority, if they wish, to har-
vest pythons and other reptiles of concern
(Indian python, reticulated python, northern
and southern African rock python, amethys-
tine or scrub python, green anaconda and


Nile monitor lizard) on Everglades, Francis S.
Taylor, Holey Land and Rotenberger WMAs
and Big Cypress National Preserve during
specified hunting seasons.
Small-game seasons on all four manage-
ment areas continue through March 7. On
Big Cypress, however, the small-game sea-
son ends Feb. 1.
In all four WMAs, only a Florida hunting
license and management area permit are re-
quired to hunt reptiles of concern from now
through the end of the small-game seasons.
"During the warm-weather months, Bur-
mese pythons stay hidden out of the sun,
but with the temperatures dipping below
normal in these areas, they have to find a
way to stay warm," said Jenny Tinnell, FWC
biologist with the exotic species section.
"They may be out in the open more than
before to find the warmth of the sun, and


we hope hunters, in the normal course of
hunting in these areas, will take advantage
of the opportunity to help stop the spread of
this nonnative species."
With the exception of the small-game
season in the Deep Lake Unit of Big Cypress
(where only bows and muzzleloaders are al-
lowed), hunters may use shotguns, rimfire
rifles and handguns to take pythons.
Nets and snares also may be used, but
no matter the method of take, all reptiles of
concern must be euthanized on site.
Reptiles of concern may not be taken
out of the wildlife management areas alive
and must be reported to the FWC within 36
hours by calling, toll-free, 866-392-4286, or
going to MyFWC.com and selecting "Bur-
mese pythons" in the "Quick Clicks" menu.
However, any reptile of concern taken
from Big Cypress must be checked in at one


of the area's six check stations.
Hunters may do what they wish with the
reptiles' skin and meat. However, according
to the National Park Service, mercury testing
on two dozen captured Burmese pythons in
Everglades National Park revealed extraor-
dinarily high levels of mercury in the meat
- well above levels considered safe to eat in
freshwater fish and alligators.
Officials estimate there are thousands of
Burmese pythons in the wild in South Flor-
ida.
The FWC's goal is to contain the spread
of these pythons in the wild and prevent
establishment of other reptiles of concern.
Data collected by hunters on these state-
managed lands will assist in preventing their
northward movement.

Robert Freeman Sherrell, 80
CLEWISTON Robert Freeman Sherrell,
passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2009, in
Clewiston. He was 80.
He was born January 26, 1929 in Baxter,
Tenn., son of the late George Monroe Sherrell
and the late Alice Jane (Thomas) Sherrell. He
was a resident of Clewiston since 1945. Robert
worked as an electrician with U.S.S.C. for many
years. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Doris (Fletch-
er) Sherrell; sons, Lavonne Sherrell (Ann) and
Tim Sherrell (Elizabeth) of Clewiston; brothers,
Lloyd Sherrell of Baxter, Tenn., and Billy Sherrell
of Cookeville, Tenn.; sisters, Mary Martin and
Dorothy McCaleb of Baxter, Tenn.; and grand-
children, Luke Sherrell, Lori Sherrell, Tasha Cor-
nelius, Joshua Sherrell, Stephanie Vinson,
Andrew Sherrell and Tonya Sherrell.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, Janu-
ary 2, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Clewiston,
with Dr. Todd Buck officiating. Interment fol-
lowed in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston.

Milton Vesey Evans, 79
CLEWISTON Milton Vesey Evans, age 79, of
Clewiston, passed away Dec. 29, 2009, in Cle-
wiston. He was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Memphis,
Tenn., son of the late Charles Evans and the late
Minnette Van Dozier Fast Evans.
He was a resident of Clewiston since 1998.
Milton was born and raised in Memphis and
graduated from Memphis State University. He
was a former, longtime resident of Jacksonville.
He retired as a college recruitment director with
Southern Bell Telephone Co.
Milton is survived by his son, David Michel
Evans of Clewiston. He was preceded in death
by his parents and brothers, Albert Evans and
Creighton Evans.
Cremation will take place at Caloosa Cremato-
ry in LaBelle.

Evelyn Marie Fletcher, 87
CLEWISTON Evelyn Marie Fletcher, age 87,
of Clewiston, passed away at 10:20 p.m. on Jan.
11, 2010, in Weston, Fla.
Evelyn was born May 19, 1922, in Campaign,
Tenn., the daughter
of the late Spencer
and Cora Hamilton
Beard. She married
Maurice Fletcher on
Aug. 3, 1942 in
Huntsville, Ala.; he
preceded her in
death on March 10,
1990. She was a
member of the First
Baptist Church of
Clewiston for over
Fifty years.
She was a homemaker and musician
for many years.
Evelyn leaves behind her loving children,
Marcelyn Griffin, Michael Fletcher, and Warren
Fletcher; six grandchildren and seven great-
grandchildren.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be 1
p.m., Saturday, Jan. 16, in First Baptist Church
of Clewiston, visitation will be Friday evening in
Akin-Davis Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Inter-
ment will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery in Clewis-
ton.

Ima Jean Fields, 61
CLEWISTON Ima Jean Fields passed away
on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, after an extended ill-
ness. She was 61.
Ima Jean was born on March 19, 1948, in
Belle Glade,the daughter of the late William H.
Johnson and Geraldine Johnson. She retired
from United States Sugar Corporation after
many years of service.
Ima Jean was preceded in death by her par-
ents, five brothers and one sister.
Ima Jean is survived by her husband, Billy D.
Fields of Clewiston; son, Jimmy Fields (Gloria)
of Clewiston; daughter, Laura Gonzalez (Jose)
of Jonesboro, Georgia; four grandchildren,
Joshua Fields, Sasha Fields, Nelson Rojas, III
and Alexander Rojas; three brothers and seven
sisters, many nieces and nephews and a host of
brother and sister-in-laws.
Final resting place is Ridgelawn Cemetery, Cle-
wiston. Arrangements were entrusted to Akin-
Davis Funeral Home, Clewiston and Pastor
Yates of Clewiston Gospel Ministries officiated
the ceremony.

CLEWISTON Ronald E. Knox, passed away
Sunday, January 3, 2010, in Clewiston. He was
72.
He was born March 14, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio,
the son of the late
Harlan and Helen
(Reineger) Knox.
Mr. Knox married
Martha Hensley. He
was a Machinist
working for the Boe-
ing Company.
He was preceded

Survivors include

metery, Clewiston. Visitation was from 6 to 8

A Walk in the Past: 'The Battle of Okeechobee'

General Jesup's military tactics employed
mobile units that operated independently of
one another. These probing units were suc-
cessful in ferreting Seminoles from hide-
outs that lay deep in the Florida swamps.
The constant harassment forced many of
the Seminoles to engage in open skirmishes
while, at the same time, pressured the out-
manned and outgunned Seminoles to seek
refuge from the soldiers by retreating into
South Florida.
General Jesup once stated that he and
the American people knew as little about
Florida as they did China and how right he
was. If Jesup's analogy of North and Cen-
tral Florida was likened to China, then he
probably thought of South Florida as being
comparable to the moon, since no white
American had ever surveyed, much less ex-
plored, the liquid land that we now call the
Everglades.
In 1837, the famous Cartographer, John
Williams, made a military map of Florida.
However, he excluded one minor detail
from the map, a large lake that according
to legend lay nestled in the back waters of
South Florida.
Tales abounded about this vast legendary
lake because no white American had ever
ventured into South Florida to vindicate the
lake's existence. This fallacy would soon be
corrected by Colonel Zachary Taylor.
Colonel Taylor had served in the War of
1812 and the Black Hawk War of 1832, be-
fore entering service in the Florida Theater.
In 1837, General Jesup assigned the First
Infantry Regiment, commanded by General
Taylor, the task of patrolling the area be-
tween the Peace River and the Kissimmee
River.
The 1 st Infantry settled into a daily routine
and constructed a fort called Fort Gardner
along the Kissimmee River, while assigned
to this sector.
This routine changed abruptly on Decem-
ber 19, 1837, when Colonel Taylor received
permission from General Jesup to march
south and search for Seminoles.
General Taylor marched his army out
of Fort Gardener the same day he received
the marching papers. During the first day's
march, the famous Seminole Chief Jumper
and his people walked in and surrendered.
The following day, the slow moving army
surprised and captured several camps of
Seminoles as it prodded ever deeper into the
unknown.
On the third day, Taylor ordered the con-
struction of a small stockade because the
area was becoming more impenetrable and
slowing the advance of his bulky army.
The heavy baggage and cannons were to
be stored at the hastily built stockade that he
named Fort Basinger.
It should be noted that Fort Gardener and
Fort Basinger were named after officers that
died in Dade's Massacre.
General Taylor's army was approximately
1,000 men strong. Roughly 700 of these men
were Army regulars, while the rest were ei-
ther volunteers or Indians. Two hundred and
twenty of the volunteers were from Missouri,
under the command of Colonel Gentry.


The Missouri volunteers became involved
in the Seminole War after president-elect,
Martin Van Buren and Thomas Hart Benton,
a senator from Missouri had "a good ole
boy" conversation.
Benton reportedly said, "If the Seminoles
had the Missourians to deal with, their stay
in Florida would be short." After Martin
Van Buren defeated Andrew Jackson in the
presidential election and became president,
he remembered Senator Benton's boast
and asked if some Missourians would travel
to Florida and fight the Seminoles. Senator
Benton replied, "The Missourians will go
wherever their services are needed."
According to all accounts, the Missou-
rians were tough and looking for a fight.
While Taylor was resting his troops at Fort
Bassinger, several Missourians spotted Semi-
noles when taking their horses to pasture.
They informed Colonel Gentry, who crossed
the Kissimmee River and prepared his men
for battle.
A mad Taylor rode up and told Colonel
Gentry, "that was the way with these volun-
teers, they were always too forward when
not wanted, and always behind when they
were."
Taylor went on to say, "that he had but lit-
tle confidence in him (Gentry) or his troops,
that from that time if he or any other of his
officers disobeyed his orders they would be
punished to the full extent of the law."
On December 23, 1837, General Taylor
left approximately 200 men at Fort Bassinger
and proceeded south. He traveled seven
miles the first day. The next day it rained
most of the day.
Despite the rain, Taylor's army surprised
a small band of Seminoles and captured
them.
On Christmas morning, December 25,
1837, Taylor marched his men through a
section of pinelands and stumbled upon nu-
merous Seminole chickees.
Taylor and his men knew the Seminoles
had to be in the area and went on the alert.
At about 11 a.m. the army reached a
hammock that had a small creek running in
front of it.
Everyone feared an ambush, so General
Taylor ordered the Missourians to cross first.
After they had crossed safely, he sent the
Army regulars across.
The Missourians were unhappy with Tay-
lor's leadership because they felt he was
sparing his Army regulars a hail of hot lead,
while making the volunteers good candi-
dates for cannon fodder.
Not long afterward, troops captured a
Seminole on horseback. He was questioned
and reported there were many warriors
waiting for the troops at a large hammock
only one mile away.
Taylor held a war council and planned
his attack. He would march two lines of sol-
diers to the hammock. The first line would
be made up of volunteers, while the second
and third lines would be Army regulars.
Missouri Volunteer, Colonel Gentry, ques-
tioned the frontal approach that used the
European conventional line of attack and
suggested that Taylor out flank the Seminole
held hammock and attack it from all posi-
tions.
General Taylor said, "Colonel Gentry, are


you afraid to attack their center?" to which
Gentry replied, "No, sir. If that is your order,
it will be done that way."
The Seminoles had prepared a loud wel-
coming committee for General Taylor and
his men. Seminole leaders, Sam Jones, Al-
ligator and Coacoochee, (who had escaped
imprisonment under a flag of truce) had pre-
pared the killing ground.
Notches were cut in the cypress trees to
steady the Indians' aim, while a corridor of
sawgrass was cut through the slough, so
that it led to the center of the hammock
It is estimated that nearly 400 Seminole
warriors waited patiently for the arrival of
the American forces. Sam Jones command-
ed half of the Seminoles and was in charge
of the hammocks right wing that faced the
Americans, while Alligator commanded
120 Seminoles in the hammock's center. A
vengeful Coacoochee commanded 80 Semi-
noles on the left wing.
The Missourians and other volunteers ad-
vanced in the first line with the 6th Infantry
following 50 yards behind them.
The 4th Infantry was 50 yards behind the
6th Infantry in a third advancing line, while
General Taylor's 1st Infantry stayed behind
as a reserve.
When the first line of Missourians and
other volunteers were 100 yards from the
hammock, they were met with a tremen-
dous volley that raked their line.
Colonel Gentry, who was leading the Mis-
sourians, encouraged the volunteers to con-
tinue advancing and was wounded shortly
afterward.
The Seminole's withering fire was so in-
tense that it was likened to a scythe as the
bullets mowed the Sawgrass down. Stand-
ing up in the withering fire, Colonel Gentry
ordered the men to fight, lying down in the
Sawgrass.
Colonel Gentry was shot fatally in the
abdomen as he continued to encourage the
volunteers to move forward.
The 6th Infantry, which was behind the
volunteer line, started receiving lethal fire as
they entered the 100 yard killing zone.
The Missourians lay hidden in the
Sawgrass as they reloaded and fired, while
the 6th Infantrymen remained standing in a
long line of blue as they advanced loading
and firing their guns.
The murderous fire from the Seminole
rifles started tearing great gaps through the
advancing line of blue.
Soon the advancing 6th Infantry caught
up with the Missouri volunteers, who were
crawling slowly in the protective cover of the
Sawgrass toward the hammock.
The Seminoles intense and accurate fire
became so lethal to the closing 6th Infantry
that it began to fall back despite the fatally
wounded Colonel Gentry's encouragement
to continue the attack.
The retreating 6th Infantry spread pan-
demonium among the Missouri volunteers,
who started following suite.
Shouting Seminoles surged from the
hammock and began to press the attack as
they scalped fallen Infantry and volunteers.
Retreating men from the 6th Infantry as well
as the Missourians rallied and countered at-
tacked, finally driving the Seminoles back to
the hammock.


The 4th Infantry, which had been behind
the 6th continued to move forward. The
combined forces of the Army regulars and
volunteers eventually drove the Seminoles
from their hammock stronghold back into
the Everglades.
The Battle of Lake Okeechobee was
bloodiest battle the Army fought during the
Second Seminole War. General Taylor's ca-
sualties were 26 dead and 112 wounded.
No one is sure of the Seminole losses in
this battle. This battle was the final blow to
the Seminoles because they never waged
war on this scale again.

Glades Board of County Commissioners meets

A rather routine meeting began 2010 for
Glades County Commissioners Tuesday.
The agenda was filled with routine busi-
ness items, a presentation related to a new
park, and an agreement that continues and
EMS agreement between Okeechobee and
Glades Counties.
Hugo Geistman, President of the Ortona
Community Association presented a plaque
to the Commission for the recent addition of
a new park in Ortona. He also expressed
appreciation to the BOCC for their support
of the Ortona Children's Library.
The BOCC approved a request from the
OCA to prohibit motorized vehicles and the
use of alcohol in the park. The county also
approved the expenditure of $2,279 to build
a park around the new park.
The Commission approved a federal
grant that benefits local fire departments.
The Assistance to Firefighters grant will
bring $60,000 to purchase a physic-control
life pack. The county match is 5-percent of
$3,000.
The BOCC also approved certificates of
public convenience and necessity agree-
ments with Okeechobee County Fire Res-
cue, West Coast Ambulance and the Semi-
nole Tribe to provide emergency medical
services in portions of the county.
The County also will hold a surplus prop-
erty auction on Feb. 20, at 9 a.m. at the Road


Department building on State Road 78.
The County will also apply with a Com-
munity Development Block Grant 2008 Di-
saster Recovery Application for $200,924
for damage done during Tropical Storm Fay.
The money can help rehabilitate homes, de-
molish and build replacement homes and
also pay for temporary relocation costs for
families.
The county approved new street names
in the industrial park near Moore Haven that
will also be the new location of the proposed
health department building. The streets will
be appropriately named Health Park Drive
and Industrial Drive.
The County also agreed to drop legal ac-
tion against the contractor who replaced
the roof on the Buckhead Ridge Volunteer
Fire Department building after the storms of
2005. County Attorney Richard Pringle said
there has been no action on the case in over
a year and the court has requested the case
be dismissed.
The County also lost their 4-H leader
and Cooperative Extension Agent to the
Okeechobee Cooperative Extension. The
County is working with the University of
Florida to name a replacement in that job.
State Representative Denise Grimsley
will meet January 26 at 9 a.m. with County
Commissioners, City of Moore Haven offi-
cials and the Glades County School Board at
the School Board offices.
Jan. 28, at 3:30 p.m. has been set for the
State Legislative Delegation meeting. It will

be held in the County Commission cham-
bers.
Bids for the new health department came
in at just under $5 million. A ground break-
ing ceremony could be held sometime in
February.
Results of a study on the county landfill
are expected to be ready sometime in March,
County Manager Wendell Taylor said.


Work on the Pearce Canal is nearing
completion according to Missy Barletto of
the South Florida Water Management Dis-
trict, Okeechobee Service Center.
Commissioner Bob Giesler said the Buck-
head Ridge Marina has also re-opened. He
said he was satisfied with the quality of work
that was done. The cost of the project will be
$1.25 million.

GLADES COUNTY -- According to coun-
ty extension agent, Gene McAvoy, LaBelle,
the sustained low and freezing tempera-
tures of the past 11 days have been severe
and left heavy damage to southwest Flori-
da vegetable and fruit crops. Last week, the
damage to citrus had been marginal, but
several more nights of a hard freeze has
not only hurt the fruit, but has significantly
harmed citrus trees.
Citrus fruit has frozen on the tree which
will cause it to dry out quickly and provide
less juice. Even though damaged trees will
survive, their performance next year will
yield less fruit.
Vegetable crops such as tomato, egg-
plant, squash, green beans and peppers
have shriveled from the frost and left
wounds in the plants. Most importantly,
the flowers on young vegetable plants
have fallen off and the next harvest should
produce much less. Green bean growers


in the Homestead area report that the crop
is near lost, and residents can come to the
fields and glean for the remains.
Sugar cane has been hurt in Glades
County, and the next few weeks are vital
to the farmer. Damages will have to be as-
sessed in the near future after some plants
been harvested.
Gene McAvoy mentioned the pasture
grass has turned brown and is not palat-
able to livestock, which will cause ranchers
to purchase more feed.
'Agriculture was the bright spot in this
economy," Mr. McAvoy said, Jan. 11.
Now the shine has gone from that bright
spot and the freeze will greatly affect truck
drivers, pickers and consumers. According
to Mr. McAvoy, south Florida produce is
shipped all through the U.S., and the im-
pact will be felt everywhere. Tomatoes that
used to cost $14 a box will now cost $24
a box. A box of peppers was $8, but will
now cost $18. Overall, the agricultural loss
could be over $100 million.

GLADES COUNTY -- On Jan. 2 at 8:40
p.m., Deputy R. Ermeri, GCSO, respond-
ed to the area of US 27 and CR 720 near
Moore Haven due to a report of an alleged
intoxicated driver.
When the sergeant arrived on the scene
he met with Craig De Vries, federal law
enforcement officer, who had observed a
mini van that had left the roadway several
times and nearly overturned several times.
According to the arrest report, the offi-
cer also advised Sergeant Ermeri that the
van had crossed the lanes of traffic several
times, and had become airborne after leav-
ing the pavement and striking a driveway.
The van driver then parked on the east side
of CR 720.
Sergeant Ermeri made contact with the
driver who was in the driver seat with the
engine running and the lights on.
The officer, Craig De Vries, was still on
the scene and he commented this was the


van that was driven recklessly.
The suspect, Efrain Hernandez, 29, Ben-
bow Village, was found to have a suspend-
ed drivers license out of North Carolina.
According to an arrest report, Sergeant
Ermeri's observations led him to believe
the suspect was intoxicated, and he began
an investigation and field sobriety test.
This was done with the assistance of a
language translator.
Due to the manner in which the sus-
pect attempted to complete the test, the
sergeant placed Efrain Hernandez under
arrest.
He was taken to the Glades County
jail and observed for 20 minutes. Then a
breath sample was taken on a Intoxilyzer
8000.
It measured .247 on the first sample,
and then .258 on the second sample. Mr.
Hernandez was issued a DUI and driving
while license suspended. Bond was set at
$750.

6th Annual Hallelujah

son, known as "The World's Smallest Gospel
Singer," The Cornwell Twins, Aaron Roberts,
Jerry Trammell, The Ky. Hillbillies, Artie and
Dora Carnes and The Church Choir. There
will be a different program each night.

cilities and parking lot they hope to seat over
200 for each service.

Lyver's Fund At First

Christian
On Jan. 8th the mobile home of Bob and
Linda Lyers was gutted by fire.
They lost most of their personal belong-
ings. The Lyvers have two children Jesse,
age 13, and Katie, age 15.
The Red Cross made it possible for them
to stay in a motel for a few days and gave
them clothing allowances.
Judy Vann is allowing them to stay in
rental property until they get another home.
First Christian Church has started a Fund
to help the Lyvers with their needs.
There is an immediate need for beds and

Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
I've listened to people say "Happy Holi-
days" and there have been times during the
Christmas season (Yes, I said "Christmas"
season) when they've greeted me that way.
People usually know that I believe in cel-
ebrating Christmas and, curiously, some of
those who greeted me with "Happy Holi-
days" also share my faith!
I imagine that a generic expression of
good will is better than none; but there is
a time when sharing oneself is even better.
I've been called upon to give prayers, usually
blessings and invocations, at meetings and
public events. It happens to all clergy.
The reason may go back to their be-
ing the most appropriate ones to express
the sentiments, thoughts, reflections of the
group for asking God's presence-blessing-
intervention-guidance.
At this point, the choice is to be "generic"
or "who I am and what makes me the one
who may be the most appropriate person in
the room to offer such a prayer. I take it that,
when asked, I am called upon to bring all
of the resources, traditions, thoughts to bear
on what I have to offer.
It isn't "Do you want a watered-down
version of me" but "I am honored by your
calling on me-I'll do my best to be who I
am for you." On many occasions, I've been
in the presence of others who do not share
my faith: their leading in prayer can be quite
edifying and I accept and adapt what is of-
fered.
I've attended worship occasions in Amer-
indian languages; not understanding a word
of what was offered; I shared in the tenor of
the service but I did not know or understand
the context of the service.
Likewise, when I've attended services
in German; getting some words here and
there; and drawing as much as I could be-
cause I wanted to be at least in part con-
tributing to the communal worship where I
found myself.
I do better in French; where I've spent
time building a Church in that language;
and certainly better in English. The mes-
sages throughout are "The doors are open;
come and share our ways of doing things,
our beliefs, our message."
My tacit reply is "Thank you, I will, but
please don't water it down because I am
with you today." My tradition includes the
One who says "I have come that they may
have life, and have it abundantly (John
10:10)."
Wish me a "Happy whatever..." and I
will see that it comes from who you are; I'll
adapt it, accept it as offered with my own un-
derstandings, take it as a good will intention
on your part. But don't offer me something
less; that's not really who you are or who
I really am. From our traditions we should
have respect for the beliefs of others and this
is how it should be; but in turn we should be


respected as well. Enough said!

Everyone Needs a Buddy

I wonder if the Scripture saying "what-
ever you did for the least of these, you did
for me" applies to animals?
Buddy came into our lives riding in
the engine block of a delivery truck to the
church. When the truck left, I thought at first
the kitten had been run over. I picked him
up by the scruff of his neck and said, "Hey
buddy, are you okay?" Fortunately, he was,
and the name stuck.
I wasn't planning to keep Buddy, but we
fell in love with him. Strangest of all, how-
ever, was that my dog Pepper adopted the
kitten as her own. When you give yourself
for the benefit of others, your life is enriched
as is theirs.
So it is with Pepper and Buddy. She be-
came his care-taker and protector. They
still play with each other today, and Buddy
learned to fetch and beg food like his ad-
opted mom.
There is truth in the prayer of St. Francis
where it states, "For it is in giving that we re-
ceive." Everyone needs a "buddy" to come
into their lives. We receive a blessing when
we encounter and help those in need that
cross our path. We should pray for such op-
portunities. Be prepared, however, for God
might answer our prayers in an unexpected
way!
A pastor found a kitten up a tree in his
backyard that was afraid to come down. The
tree wasn't sturdy enough to climb, so the
pastor decided to tie a rope to his car and
the tree, and then back up until the tree bent
over enough for him to reach the kitten.
But as he backed up, the rope broke and
the tree snapped back, sending the kitten
sailing through the air out of sight.
The pastor felt terrible and walked the
neighborhood asking people if they'd seen
the kitten. Nobody had, so he prayed, "Lord,
I commit this kitten to your keeping," and
then went back to work.
A few days later at the grocery store, he
met one of his church members and hap-
pened to look in her shopping cart. Knowing
she didn't like cats, he was surprised to see
cat food in her cart, so he asked her about
it.
She replied, "You won't believe this," and
told him how her little girl had been begging
for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few
days before, the child had begged again, so
the Mom finally told her, "If God gives you a
cat, I'll let you keep it."
She continued, "Pastor, I watched my
child go out in the yard, get on her knees,
and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you
won't believe this, but I saw it with my own
eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of
the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and
landed right in front of her."

Strange, weird, crazy, ba-
zaar!

A fellow preacher that I admire reported
that he recently typed in his name on an in-
ternet spot and when the reply came in it
had his phone number and address
But the most amazing thing about the
knowledge the computer had to say about
him was the category under which he was
listed. Above his name in large print it said
PEOPLE WHO ARE STRANGE, WEIRD,
CRAZY AND BAZAAR.
He wondered how they found out he be-
longed in that category. But when he found
the source he was rather complimented that
he was listed in this category. After all the
opinion of the computer is the world view
of things.
He said he could understand why he was
listed as strange, weird, crazy and bazaar.
For one thing he has the view that two men
or two women getting married to each other
is the most low down, rotten, stinking, thing
that two humans could do.
The world view of this procedure is that it
is an acceptable life style. So from the stand
point in their view he was definitely strange,
weird, crazy and bazaar.
For another thing he has the view that
two people living together in what they call
a relationship (shacked up) are immoral
whoremongers and/or fornicators. Others
excuse the problem by making the asinine
remark: "But this is a new century." Since


this is the world view he said he really did
belong in the category of strange, weird,
crazy and bazaar.
Perhaps the view that he had of sports is
the one that really does me in, he said. In my
view America has made a god of sports. In
ancient Rome one of the signs of decadence
was the love of sports. Christians sometimes
had to enter the arena to fight wild beasts.
Today is the same only worse.
Ancient Christians did not want to be
devoured by wild beasts, but modern Chris-
tians enjoy the ordeal. Some are devoured
by the Nitany Lions. How about the Detroit
Tigers. Then there are the Bengals, actually
the Bengals don't do much damage.
Some arenas have a low budget and can-
not afford lions and tigers so they use wild-
cats. I understand they turn five of them lose
at one time. I will spare you the details of
how some suffer as the go into the arena
with the bears, the bulls, the rams, the bull-
dogs and the gators.
He said, In my view most of the quote
Christians unquote have a greater love for
the lions, tigers, wildcats, bears, bulls, rams,
bulldogs and gators, than they do for the
LAMB.
And so, he said, dear friends it should
come as no surprise that I found my name
listed on the Internet in the category of those
who are STRANGE, WEIRD, CRAZY, AND
BAZAAR. All I can say is "'Amen"!

shipped north to Jacksonville, Florida and
Richmond Virginia; and on to New York City.
Along the way the fish were iced several
times to keep it cold. Alabama and Georgia
also provided a large market for commercial
fish. Some species of fish caught in the seine
were considered culls or non-food fish, and
these were processed, frozen and sold to
saltwater fishermen as chum or bait.
Sam Griffin was born in Clewiston, 1937,
and grew up near the seafood market and
marina on the east side of the city. At a
young age he would get into the water and

Stallings noticed young spectators watch-
ing the PSAs, and how they would go find


pull boats for fishermen. By age 13 he was a
guide on Lake Okeechobee. He recalls navi-
gating the crooked Kissimmee River and its
numerous ox-bows before it was cut into a
straight canal by the Corps of Engineers.
His family operated a fish camp and a
boat marina until the late 1970's. Those
places are now named Uncle Joe's Fish
Camp, off CR 720, and Angler's Marina in
Clewiston.
Sam Griffin experimented with creating
fishing lures that would be durable and at-
tractive to largemouth bass and snook. He
discovered that the foundation to an excel-
lent lure is the type and quality of wood. It
cannot have too much sap or knots in it.
Initially, Mr. Griffin acquired equipment and
supplies from Louisiana, Oklahoma and
Oregon. According to Sam Griffin, his fish-

"I think it made an impact on the kids,"

Sergeant Watts added that he believes
students are very curious about the affects of
distracted driving and non-use of seat belts.
He requested FDOT participation in a future
presentation for the schools. Ms. Stallings
commented that they are always looking for

on the progression board. The audience was
quite interested in his description of crafting
lures because they are also anglers, hobby-
ists and craftsmen. He and his wife, Carol,
still operate a fishing lure workshop in Lake-
port.
Audience members asked Sam Griffin
about the health of Lake Okeechobee and its
fishery. He explained that before the Franklin

out copies of concept papers for grant proj-

FDOT grant of $436,000 for construction
of a safer drop-off site behind Moore Ha-
ven Elementary School. It should eliminate
confusion by the pre-schools, Chalo Nitka

should ease the problem of visitors coming

river and Lake Okeechobee. He remembers
anglers caught redfish, sheepheads, and
flounder in the big lake. Curiously enough,
before 1970, tarpon in the lake reached 150
pounds.
Mr. Griffin mentioned that powerful fed-
eral and state agencies often keep the lake
one foot too low to maintain its good health.
During releases, the water level is pulled
down too quickly; and the fishery is deplet-
ed of fresh water, even if it does not rain.

Haven is programed to be a fully functioning
light during the start and end of the school

County accident occurred involving three
large trucks near the Clewiston city limits
on US 27. There was one fatality. Several
employees of Glades County Sheriff's Office
stopped to offer assistance while they were
on their commute to Moore Haven.
