investigation

Beach County Sheriff's Office
worked in cooperation with the
Glades County Sheriff's Office for
an investigation of illegal activi-
ties within Glades County. Detec-
tive Sergeant M. Pepitone was the
GCSO operational case coordina-
tor.
On Dec. 2, about 11 p.m., PBC-
SO Agent Fonseca and Sergeant
Woodruff arrived at Angler's Reef
bar in Moore Haven. The bar-
tender introduced Agent Fonseca


to the suspect, Angela Wofford.
According to an arrest report, the
suspect gave him her cell phone
number and advised him to call
if he needed marijuana. Wofford
reportedly introduced the agent
to Joe Madden who also provided
the agent with a phone number
and advised him to call should he
need any marijuana.
Agent Fonseca contacted the
suspect, Joe Madden, by cell
phone on Dec. 3 and told him he
wished to purchase two ounces of
marijuana. The suspect informed
the agent that he was working in
LaBelle and would call back later
to complete a transaction.
According to an arrest report,
the suspect contacted Agent Fon-
seca about 10:45 p.m. and advised
he would meet him in Moore Ha-
ven at an apartment on Avenue R,
and deliver two ounces of mari-
juana. The suspect, Joe Madden,

MOORE HAVEN On Dec. 11
about 7:40 p.m., Sergeant T. Nieves
observed a silver sedan travel-
ing north on U.S. 27 in the city of
Moore Haven. He activated the ra-
dar unit and it displayed a speed of
56 m.p.h. The posted speed limit
for the area is 35 m.p.h.
Sergeant Nieves conducted
a traffic stop on the silver sedan
near US 27 and Seventh Street.


While collecting information from
the driver and one passenger, the
sergeant noticed both were very
nervous. The driver, Amanda
Louise Glenn, 25, of Panama City,
commented that she had gone to
Fort Lauderdale and was driving
back home.
According to an arrest report,
Sergeant Nieves noticed the car
had been rented that day and
there were three car seats in the
car; however, Glenn and one pas-
senger were the only occupants.

ited the vehicle and Deputy Naso
arrived to assist with the search.

seat and the center console. It was
without a protective cap. A clear
fluid was inside the syringe. Two
pill bottles containing clear fluid
were found in the trunk. Accord-
ing to an arrest report, one bottle
was listed as prescribed to Glenn,
and the second bottle was listed
as prescribed to Sigeal Stockton.
Both suspects were handcuffed
and detained.
Sergeant Nieves asked Amanda
Glenn if she was diabetic or used
insulin. She stated she was not

Staying active is one of many ways of preventing disease.

Another year has come and gone and
many people will have a New Year's resolu-
tion. (Maybe to lose weight, to eat healthier,
to exercise more or to quick smoking)
Resolutions are great but prevention is
the key to being healthy.
We need to focus on preventing diseases
and other health problems instead of trying
to correct them once something happens.
Most people have no problem taking
their cars in for service in order to prevent
mechanical problems.
Try to think of your body and overall
health in the same way.
Proper checkups, eating healthy and
regular exercise are some things we can do
to help prevent our bodies from "breaking
down."
Why is preventive health care so impor-
tant?
About half of all deaths from heart dis-
ease are sudden and unexpected, so there's
little opportunity for treatment.
Prevention is the key.
Thousands of coronary artery bypass
procedures are performed every year.
Surgery is not the cure for all heart attack-
prone people.
Treatments for heart disease aren't cures
either.
Procedures can't slow the buildup of fatty
deposits in arteries which causes most heart
disease.
The buildup of fatty deposits in arteries
often begins in childhood, but it may be de-
cades before clinical disease shows up.
That's why more effort must be focused
on prevention.
Risk factors that we can modify, treat or
control include: tobacco use, high blood
cholesterol, high blood pressure, lack of
physical activity, being obese or overweight,
and diabetes.


The public seems to be adopting more
healthful behaviors and lifestyles. By focus-
ing on prevention, we can have a major im-
pact on people's health.
Be physically active each day Eat a nu-
tritious diet Get Preventive Screenings-
Avoid risky behaviors
Regular physical activity is important for
your overall health and well-being. Include
activities that you enjoy and can easily fit
into your daily routine-such as walking
your dog, working in your garden, or riding
your bike.
Being active for 30-60 minutes on most
days can help you build strength and fitness,
relax and reduce stress, gain more energy,
and improve your sleep.
These benefits all add up to decreasing
your risk of heart disease and other condi-
tions, such as colon cancer, diabetes, osteo-
porosis, and high blood pressure.
It's important to follow the basics: eat a
healthy diet by choosing a variety of fruits
and vegetables.
Avoid fats, added sugars, and salt. Eat
in moderation. Eating right makes you feel
good, and it can reduce your risk for diseases
like heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes,
stroke, and osteoporosis
Do you know your cholesterol numbers
or what your blood pressure is? Do certain
diseases and conditions run in your family?
When faced with choices that may im-
pact your health and the lives of those you
love, it's important to remember that there
are options and resources to help you make
healthy decisions.
You are lucky; you have choices. You can
learn how to avoid risky situations, break
unhealthy habits, and protect yourself and
the lives of those you love.
You can also learn to prepare yourself
against natural disasters and catastrophic
events.
Prevention is the key ... educate yourself
and take care of yourself!

Pancake Breakfast
The Ortona Community Association will
hold its first pancake breakfast of the new
year on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 7 a.m. until 9
a.m. at the Ortona Community Hall, Ortona
Locks Road (Highway 78A). The all-you-can-
eat breakfast includes sausage, delicious
pancakes, juice and coffee for just $4.

Glades County Gun Club
The Glades County Gun Club will hold
an open range shooting event on Saturday,
Jan. 9. The Range is located at the Glades
County Sheriffs Gun Range at Gun Club Rd
on SR 78 4.2 mi NE of US 27. Glades resi-
dents are welcome at no charge. Insurance
requires all guests to register, attend a short
range safety briefing and sign a waiver. Eye
and ear protection is mandatory and will be
available by the club.
The gate will open at 8 a.m., registra-
tion from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., briefing at
8:45 a.m. Shooting to begin after briefing till
about 11 a.m. Guests may be accompanied
to the firing line and supervised by a club
member for safety concerns. Black Power
guns are welcome. 1st half of event is for
handguns, 2nd half for rifle. For further in-

Westergaard House available
The Glades County Historical Society
announces that the restored 1920's Peter
Westergaard House on Avenue L in Moore
Haven is available for meetings.


Nonprofit organizations can reserve the
home for free. Private occasions like baby
showers, birthdays and bridal showers re-
quire a $25 clean up fee. To reserve this

Future Farms and Fuel
Dr. John Capece will speak at the Rotary
Club of LaBelle meeting on Tuesday, Jan.
12 at noon in Beef O'Brady's, 197 E. Hick-
pochee Av. Dr. Capece will describe the new
Sustainable Biofuels Center project funded
by the U.S. Dept. of Energy through Hendry
County. Guests are welcome. Lunch fee is

Bingo helps food pantry
Bingo is offered as a fund raiser and as
entertainment beginning at 7 p.m. Bingo
will be held every Thursday until May. This
will support the Food Pantry which serves
Glades County every Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Walk in the Past: The Rules of War

The Battle of Hatcheelustee (Jan. 8, 1837)
could have been the last battle fought in the
Second Seminole Indian War because it re-
inforced the futility of waging war against
the United States to many of the war weary
Seminoles,. The ripple effect of the resulting
battle came when several Seminole leaders
approached the soldiers under a truce, to re-
quest a meeting with General Jeup.
After the meeting, General Jesup declared
an armistice until February 18, 1837, when
the Seminoles would return and resume
peace negotiations. The negotiations were
late in coming and started at a later date.
On March 6, 1837, an agreement was finally
reached, and the document called "Capitu-
altion of the Seminole Nation of Indians and
their allies by Jumper, Holatoochee, and Ya-
holoochee, representing the principle chief
of Micanopy" was signed.
The principle provisions of the Capitula-
tion document called for the relocation of
all Florida Seminoles to the Indian lands
west of the Mississippi. To comply, the com-
bative Seminole leaders and their follow-
ers must relocate south of the Hillsbourgh
River, where military arrangements would
be made for their deployment west. It also
granted all Blacks living in Florida freedom,
if they accompanied the Seminoles west.
General Jesup's idea behind setting the
Blacks free in Florida was to appease the
Seminoles, who had integrated many Blacks
into their culture. Jesup hoped that allowing
the Blacks to go west with the Seminoles
would be an enticement for the Seminoles
to end the war. Unfortunately, none of these
ideas ever materialized.
General Jesup had always called the
Seminole War, a Negro War due to all the
imaginations an armed, free roaming Flori-
da Black conjured up in the minds of South-
ern whites. Jesup hoped that freeing all the
Blacks in Florida and shipping them west
would rule out the unresolved treaty com-
plexities associated with: runaway slaves,
Blacks living as free citizens under previous
Spanish rule, Black Seminoles and mixed
marriages.
The Capitulation document's call for the
freedom of Florida Negroes quickly became
"the straw that broke the camel's back' as
Southern Slave holders protested fervently
to state and federal officials that Jesup was
freeing blacks at their expense. Even the
loathsome slave hunters were quick to pro-
test what they saw as an unfair ending to the
slave business in Florida.
The Capitulation documents proclaimed
an "Emancipation Proclamation" for all Flor-
ida Blacks. This radical thinking threw Gen-
eral Jesup into an unpopular political arena,
where he was criticized as a traitor by parties
sympathetic to Slavery. General Jesup was
forced to cede to their political pressures and
modify the Capitulation documents, so that
only a segment of the blacks living in Florida
would gain freedom, should the Seminoles
agree to end the war and migrate west.
Peace appeared to be looming on the
Florida horizon after approximately 700
Seminoles and their leaders, over a period
of two months, had gathered outside Tam-


pa Bay for the long, boat trip to the west.
However, on June 2, 1837, Seminole lead-
ers, Osceola and Sam Jones, with the help of
several hundred warriors, kindly persuaded
the soon-to-be migrating Seminoles that it
wasn't a good idea. So, in one night General
Jesup's 700 Seminoles vanished like phan-
toms of the night.
The General was said to have experi-
enced a short bout of depression after the
700 Seminoles fled back into the swamps.
He later wrote his superiors, "This campaign
so far as relates to Indian migration has en-
tirely failed." General Jesup may have expe-
rienced another state of melancholy had he
known the Seminole War would linger an-
other five years.
In General Jesups view, the continuation
of the war could only mean eventual exter-
mination for the fighting Seminoles. It dis-
turbed him to the point that he asked to be
relieved of his command. A month later, he
was offered the chance to remove himself
from the Florida Theater, but declined. How-
ever, the damage was done because later in
his command, General Gaines, as well as
General Winfield Scott, tried to outrank him
and take command of the Florida Theater.
A continuation of the war meant a new
strategy, so a now hardened General Jesup
threw wartime military protocol out the
door and replaced it with his own interpreta-
tion. His polices could be likened to those of
the later Civil War Hero, General Sherman,
who made his infamous trip of destruction
from Atlanta, Georgia to Savannah, Georgia,
at the expense of the southern people Gen-
eral Jesup and the later General Sherman
thought alike because they both saw war as
Hell and used unorthodox methods to bring
war to an end.
General Jesup divided Central and South
Florida into different sectors and started
operating his mobile units inside these sec-
tors. One mobile group was assigned the St.
Johns River area. A second group operated
along the Indian River. A third group operat-
ed on the Kissimmee River and southward,
while a fourth group was assigned the Ca-
loosahatchee River.
An Army group under General Hernan-
dez surprised a camp of Seminoles outside
St. Augustine. Nearly all the Seminoles were
captured, including King Philip, the most im-
portant Indian captured, since the war had
begun. One captive guided the Army group
to another Seminole camp and the success
was repeated again. Seminole leaders, Yuchi
Billy and his brother, Jack, were captured on
this raid.
During the same month King Philip's son,
Coacoochee and Blue Snake, came in under
a white flag to negotiate with General Jesup.
General Jesup took them captive under the
flag of truce. Several months later General
Jesup ordered General Hernandez to follow
suite, when the famous Seminole leader
Oseola and Coa Hadjo asked for a meeting
under a flag of truce.
General Jesup soon became unpopu-
lar with different folks for taking the Indian
leaders under a flag of truce. Today, he is
still criticized for the "underhanded way"
he captured the Seminole leaders. General
Jesup understood the proper rules of en-
gagement he was to honor and play by in


wartime, but he soon learned they profited
him nothing, so he adapted.
Today, Osceola is remembered as a great
Seminole leader, who fought to keep the
Seminole Nation's homeland in Florida. Re-
gardless of how patriotic his actions were,
he did plan and participate in the deaths
of Indian Agent Thompson and five other
persons, including one, who was a boy, to
promote his objectives. He offered no flag
of truce or parley to those six victims, only
death in a time of peace.
Coacoochee and other Seminoles leaders
coordinated the ambush known as "Dade's
Massacre." Prior to the Second Seminole
War, Major Dade and his men were march-
ing to Fort King to reinforce the garrison
because diplomacy between the Seminoles
and Americans was growing ever dimmer.
Major Dade and his soldiers introduction to
the Second Seminole War was likened to
Pearl Harbor because it came as a surprise
ambush, followed by hot, lead bullets that
killed all but three of the 108 soldiers.
In short, the Seminoles were fighting for
their homeland and way of life, using every
means to achieve that objective. General Je-
sup did like wise, throwing out the text book
on "proper ways to conduct a war" and in

VENUS Emma Laura Peeples, passed away
Monday, January 4, 2010, in Fort Myers. She was
93.
She was born October 2, 1916 in Williston,
daughter of the late Evander B. Bethea and the
late Iris (Stevens) Bethea.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
Joe Henry Peeples Jr.; son, Joe Henry Peeples
III; and grandson, Justin Peeples.
Survivors include her children, JoAnn Peeples,
John Peeples and Gerald Ezel; brother, Robert
Bethea; sister, Willa Mae "Snook" Kelsoe; grand-
children, Linda Peeples Martin, Kimmy Griffen,
Byron Peeples and Joe Henry Peeples IV; great-
grandchildren, Jenna Stephens, Haley Stephens,
Brody Griffen, Hank Peeples, Justin Peeples and
Taylor Martin; and other grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday,
January 9, 2010, at the Ortona Cemetery Pavil-
ion in Ortona, with Rev. Earl Cline officiating.
Interment will follow in Ortona Cemetery. Visi-
tation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Akin-Da-
vis Funeral Home in LaBelle.

CLEWISTON Ronald E. Knox, passed away
Sunday, January 3, 2010, in Clewiston. He was
72.
He was born March 14, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio,
the son of the late

was a Machinist
working for the Boe-
ing Company.

grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday
January 6, 2010, in Akin-Davis Funeral Home,
438 E. Sugarland Hwy., Clewiston, with Elder
Stanley Campbell officiating. Interment was
Wednesday January 6, 2010 in Ridgelawn Ce-
metery, Clewiston. Visitation was from 6 to 8
p.m. Tuesday in Akin-Davis Funeral Home, Cle-
wiston.

Jessie Ruth Witt, 79
CLEWISTON Jessie Ruth Witt, age 79, of
Clewiston, passed away Dec. 29, 2009, in Cle-
wiston.
She was born July 6, 1930, in Arcadia, the
daughter of the late Edward Lano Brannan and
the late Jessie Ruth (Stokes) Brannan. She was
a lifelong resident of Glades and Hendry
Counties. She was a member of the First Metho-
dist Church of Moore Haven.
Survivors include her son, John Davis Witt
(Debbie) of Clewiston; daughter, Tamrya Berry
(Rick) of Mt. Plymouth; brother, Richard Bran-
nan (Jean) of West Palm Beach; her late hus-
band's daughter, Hope Bailey (Don) of
Lakeland; sister-in-law, Helen Brannan of Willis-
ton; grandchildren, John Wesley Jean, Katie
Jean, James Loyd Jean, Davis Earl Witt, Ramsey
John Witt, Hollye Bailey, Donnelly Bailey and
Andrea Payne; and many beloved nieces, neph-
ews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Loyd Davis Witt; and in-
fant daughter, Allyson Ann Witt.
A memorial service was noon, Saturday, Jan.
2, 2010, at Ortona Cemetery Pavilion, Moore
Haven with Frank Moore officiating. Interment
was in Ortona Cemetery, Moore Haven. Crema-
tion took place at Caloosa Crematory in LaBelle.

Josefina S. Carrasquillo, 68
CLEWISTON Josefina S. Carrasquillo,
passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2009, in
Belle Glade. She was 68.
She was born July 10, 1941 in Karnes City,
Texas, daughter of the late Jose Segura and the
late Trinidad Barrera-Garza. She was a resident
of Clewiston since 1972 and was a member of
St. Margaret's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jesus Carras-
quillo; children, Martin Segura of Edinburg, Tex-
as, Elizabeth Jackson and husband, William of
Clewiston, and Jesus Miguel Carrasquillo of
Edinburg, Texas; sister, Cirilda Ramos of San
Antonio, Texas; and grandchildren, Carlos Her-
nandez, Juan Morales, Brittanie Segura, Leonel
Macias, Martina Segura, Isaac Segura, Adrian
Jackson, Raven Jackson and Khloe Jackson.
A Memorial Mass was held Monday, January
4, 2010, at Saint Margaret's Catholic Church in
Clewiston. Cremation took place at Caloosa
Crematory in LaBelle.

Robert E Klein, 63
CLEWISTON Robert F. Klein, died Friday,
January 1, 2010, in Hendry Regional Medical
Center, following a long, courageous battle with
Emphysema. He was 63.
He was born March 1, 1946 in Chicago, Ill., to
Josephine and the late William B. Klein.
As a child, Robert moved to the Miami, Holly-
wood area and had a long career at Burdines,
prior to moving to Clewiston, where he worked
at the sugar mill.
In addition to his father, Robert was proceed-
ed in death by his brother, William Jr.
Robert is survived by his wife, Linda; his
daughters, Gina Klein and Ida Diaz; his sons,
Greg and Mark Nutt; his son-in-law, Chris Tra-
lewski; six granddaughters; three grandsons; his
brother, Brad Klein; nephews, Billy and Greg
Klein; and his mother, Josephine of Davie.
Among Roberts many friends too numerous to
mention are, Dawn Silva and Randy Neville.
At Robert's request, a private service will be
held for the immediate family only.
The family would like to thank the wonderful
staff at Hendry Regional Medical Center for the
excellent care and comfort they gave Robert in
his final days.



Evelyn Lee, 83
CLE WISTON Evelyn Lee, passed away
Monday, January 4, 2010, after an extended ill-
ness. She was 83.
Evelyn was born August 27, 1926 in Moore
Haven, the daughter of the late Arthur L. and Ib-
bie Burkett Lee. She graduated from Belle Glade
High School. She worked as a secretary for
many years for U.S. Sugar Corporation.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents;
and brothers, Major, Scott and R.J. Lee.
Evelyn is survived by her loving sister-in-law,
Monevah Lee of Clewiston; nieces, Nancy Davis
of Clewiston, Patricia Sisk of Bradenton, and
Jane Stout of California; and many wonderful
caretakers, whom helped care for her during
her extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today, Thurs-
day January 7, 2010 in the First United Methodist
Church of Clewiston, where Chaplains Don
Goodwin and Bob Moore will preside. Visitation
was from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 6,
2010 in Akin-Davis Funeral Home. Burial will
take place in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston.
Arrangements were entrusted to Akin-Davis
Funeral Home, Clewiston Chapel.

Keep your pets safe and warm during
winter cold spells.
Winter weather can be deadly for pets
even in typically warmer climates such as
Florida where pets are not accustomed to
colder temperatures.
Follow these simple tips to assure your
pet stays safe and warm during the winter
season:

If the temperature falls below 40 de-
grees, all pets need to be brought indoors
or provided adequate heating to keep them
warm (i.e. extra blankets, coats, heaters).

During the winter, outdoor cats will
search for warmer hiding places, such as
under the hoods of cars.
Honk your horn or tap the hood of your
car before starting the engine so they can
escape.

Puppies and many small breed dogs
do not tolerate the cold very well.
If your dog is sensitive to the cold be-
cause of age, illness or breed type, be sure
not to leave them outdoors for long peri-


ods of time.

Never shave your dog down to the
skin in winter.
A longer coat will provide more warmth.
Consider getting a coat or sweater for short-
haired breeds.

Make sure your companion animal
has a warm place to sleep that is away
from all drafts.
A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm
blanket or pillow is perfect.

Provide your pet with plenty of food
and water.
Be sure it does not freeze over if left out-
side.

Lakeport prepares for Sour Orange Festival

LAKEPORT Residents and winter visi-
tors have marked January 9 on their cal-
endars. They do not want to miss the Sour
Orange Festival, which has been a pleasure
for many over the years.
The main attraction is the historic sour
orange fruit, which was brought to the new
world by Spanish expeditions and early set-
tlers. The citrus fruit is historic because it is
the original root stock that was propagated


around the European Mediterranean and
North Africa. It is the foundation for all sweet
oranges that grow in Florida today.
The sour orange is a wild variety that is
very aromatic, and it is used to flavor des-
serts such as pie, cake, ice cream and muf-
fins. The famous sour orange pie is a local
favorite. It is similar to a key-lime pie, except
it has sour orange juice added to the recipe.
The day is not complete unless visitors try
it.
Each year, ladies from Glades County
communities harvest the wild sour oranges.


Many trees are found near Lakeport, Palm-
dale, Brighton, LaBelle, Venus and Lake
Placid. Wild sour orange trees can be ob-
served at the Fisheating Creek State Camp-
ground in Palmdale.
Entertainment for this year includes the
Country Traditional Band from Okeechobee;
the Century Rhythm Cloggers from LaBelle;
a kids beauty pageant and children's activi-
ties. A quilt display, photograph collection
and history booth will be in the Lakeport
Community Association clubhouse, which
is at the festival site on Red Barn Road in


Lakeport.
Local cub scouts will raise the American
flag and the Moore Haven High School band
will play patriotic tunes.
There will be arts and crafts, food and
information booths. A new addition will
be Caribbean cuisine. Seating is limited, so
bring a folding chair. Be prepared for cooler
weather. Lakeport is on the west shore of
Lake Okeechobee off SR 78 east in Glades
County. Follow the signs to Red Barn Road.

students. The ticket will be pulled Saturday
night at the 2010 Chalo Nitka Rodeo during
intermission.
This was made possible by tremendous

Dean Supply Inc, W&W Lumber, and Leh-
man Auto Body and Service Center. Tickets
are being sold at the following prices, 1 for
$5 or 5 for $20 and they can be purchased

Florida's Lifeline enrollment sees dramatic increase


The number of Floridians who benefit
from the Lifeline Assistance program grew
by 236 percent this year, according to the
Florida Public Service Commission's (PSC)
Annual Lifeline Report.
The Lifeline program makes telephone
service more affordable for low-income
residents.
"I am happy that more Florida residents
are signing up for Lifeline and staying con-
nected to family, as well as to vital commu-
nity services," said Matthew M. Carter II, PSC
Chairman. "Our efforts to make sure that no
one remains phoneless in Florida are reap-
ing results."
As of June 30, 2009, 618,774 eligible resi-
dents participated in the Lifeline program,
an increase of more than 434,800 partici-
pants over the previous year.
In its 2009 report sent to the Governor and
the Legislature, the PSC attributed increased
Lifeline participation to the automatic enroll-
ment process initiated in April 2007 by the
PSC and Florida's Department of Children
and Families and to the significant enroll-
ment of new Lifeline customers by SafeLink,
a prepaid wireless phone provider.
Under the federal Lifeline program, tele-
phone customers who participate in certain
public assistance programs are entitled to
receive a basic telephone service discount of
at least $13.50 per month, a savings of $162
per year.
Link-Up Florida (Link-Up) provides a 50
percent reduction in the telephone service

ues to work with telephone companies, the
Office of Public Counsel, and many other


groups to promote Link-Up and Lifeline,
and we hope in 2010 people will continue to
help us spread the word about these benefi-
cial programs."
Eligibility for Link-Up and Lifeline in-
cludes participation in at least one of these


programs: Temporary Cash Assistance,
Food Stamps, Medicaid, Low-Income Home
Energy Assistance Program, Supplemental
Security Income, Federal Public Housing
Assistance (Section 8), and National School
Lunch Program's free lunch program.
A family whose income is at or below 150
percent of the federal poverty level guide-
lines may also qualify.
For a family of four, this requirement is a
maximum monthly income of $2,756.
Applying for Lifeline is easy. Florida resi-
dents may call their local phone company,
the PSC at 1-800-342-3552, or the Office of
Public Counsel at 1-800-540-7-039 for assis-
tance.

Notice is herby given that the City of Clewiston shall hold a public hearing before the
Planning and Zoning Board on January 11, 2010 which shall commence at 5:30 p.m. and a
public hearing before the City Commission on January 25, 2010 which shall commence at
6:00 p.m., both meetings to be held at the City of Clewiston City Hall, 115 West Ventura

The Planning & Zoning Board and the Clewiston City Commission will hold
public heanngs to consider Ordinance 2010-01 Expansion of the CRA Boun-
daries. The heanng for Planning & Zoning is scheduled for Monday, Janu-
ary 11, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. The first heanng scheduled for the Regular City
Commission meeting is on January 25, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. A second public
hearing and final reading/consideration of the ordinances shall be held at
the Regular City Commission meeting on February 15, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at
Clewiston City Hall, 115 West Ventura Avenue, Clewiston, FL 33440.

USDA implements new crop disaster assistance program


Producers may begin
applying for SURE program
at FSA county offices

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today
announced that USDA has implemented the
new Supplemental Revenue Assistance Pay-
ments program (SURE) in accordance with
the 2008 Farm BilL Vilsack also encouraged
producers to visit their USDA Farm Service
Agency (FSA) county office beginning on
January 4, 2010 to participate in the pro-
gram ifthey suffered crop production losses
during the 2008 crop year.
"This program is an important compo-
nent ofthe farm safety net and will provide
financial assistance to producers who have
suffered crop losses due to natural disas-
ters," said Vilsack.


"Producers will receive payments begin-
ning in January, in time to help them with
planning for next year's crop.
It SURE provides crop disaster assistance
payments to eligible producers on farms
that have incurred crop production or crop
quality losses.
The program takes into consideration
crop losses on all crops grown by a producer
nationwide. SURE provides assistance in an
amount equal to 60 percent ofthe difference
between the SURE farm guarantee and total
farm revenue.
The farm guarantee is based on the
amount ofcrop insurance and Non-insured
Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP)
coverage on the farm.
Total farm revenue takes into account
the actual value ofproduction on the farm
as well as insurance indemnities and certain


farm program payments.
To be eligible for SURE, producers must
have suffered at least a 10 percent produc-
tion loss on a crop ofeconomic significance.
In addition, producers must meet the risk
management purchase requirement by ei-
ther obtaining a policy or plan ofinsurance,
under the Federal Crop Insurance Act or
NAP coverage, for all economically signifi-
cant crops.
For 2008 crops, producers had the oppor-


ment purchase requirement, a producer
must have a farming interest physically lo-
cated in a county that was declared a prima-
ry disaster county or contiguous county by
the Agriculture Secretary under a Secretarial
Disaster Designation.
Regardless ofa Secretarial Disaster Des-
ignation, individual producers may also be
eligible for SURE ifthe actual production on
the farm is less than 50 percent ofthe nor-

FWC orders amnesty program



for reptiles of concern


The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conser-
vation Commission (FWC) directed staff
to implement an executive order imme-
diately that will allow reptiles of concern
to be turned over to authorized reptile of
concern permit holders with no questions
asked.
"We must enact an amnesty program
immediately," said FWC Chairman Rod-
ney Barreto. "Florida must be a leader and
send the right message to our partners and
to the reptile industry."
Barreto made his recommendation to
the rest of the Commission after receiv-
ing reports by FWC division directors from
Habitat and Species Conservation and Law
Enforcement on reptiles of concern at the
meeting in Clewiston on Thursday. The rest
of the Commission unanimously endorsed
his suggestion.
"We must make the program easy for
licensed folks to accept these snakes," said
FWC Vice Chair Kathy Barco. "It needs to
be as easy for them to take the reptile of
concern as it is for those with the reptiles
to walk in and turn it over."
Barreto further said he would craft a
letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Sala-
zar on behalf of the Commission request-
ing additional funds to help continue the
state's effort to manage and control non-
natives in Florida.
"The Burmese python has become the
poster child for a much bigger issue," said
Tim Breault, the FWC's director of Habitat
and Species Conservation. "Nonnatives are
the real issue here, and it calls for full en-
gagement with federal leadership."
During Breault's presentation, he broke
the issue of nonnative species regulation
and management into four major compo-
nents:
international movement and trade,


captive breeding outside of native
range,
risk assessment and
eradication or control.
He suggested the Commission reach
out to federal partners.
"My biggest fear is what's going to be
the next Burmese python if we don't do
something now," Breault said.
Col. Jim Brown, director of the Division
of Law Enforcement, told the Commission
that sales of reptiles have decreased since
2008.
"Sales have gone down to a trickle be-
cause of the regulations the FWC and the
Florida legislature passed in 2008," Brown
said. "But it is still extremely important to
prevent further release of these nonnative
species into the wild."
Brown told the Commission a reptile
of concern technical assistance group had
been formed and will continue to meet.
The group supports the idea of amnesty
and supports further actions, such as
continuing the hunting program on state-
managed lands in South Florida. The Com-
mission directed Brown to draft rules, with
the assistance of the technical assistance
group, to bring back to the February meet-
ing in Apalachicola.
"Eradication of reptiles of concern from
the wild is prohibitively costly and ecologi-
cally impossible," Breault said. "But unre-
lenting control is feasible."
Barreto directed staff to continue work
with the reptile industry, zoos and all part-
ners.
"Do whatever it takes to control this
problem," he said.
Anyone who holds a reptile of concern
license will be eligible to be an amnesty fa-
cility once the executive order is issued, in
approximately two or three weeks.

Government football!

With the College Football Bowl Games
fresh in our minds and the "Super Bowl"
just around the corner I want to share some-
thing I read in a recent journal about "Gov-
ernment Football".
It makes a lot of sense to me, I hope it
does to you. The God sanctioned role of
government is to be a "minister to thee for
good" (Romans 13:4a).
But since humans are in government, too
often these leaders harm rather than help
us. For over 200 years we in America have
enjoyed great liberty, opportunity, and free-
dom to speak and live as we deem best.
But the government often believes it
knows better than we do. In view of this,
the Government takeovers are a poor game
plan. These days it seems that the govern-
ment wants to run everything: health care,
auto making, banks, schools, etc.
So I guess football must be next.
But, consider what football would be
like if the government would take over
the game: The Steelers wold be restricted
to only six players they must spread the
wealth around!
The coach must be a government man
who, though he doesn't know anything
about running a football team, nevertheless,
is put in place at a seven-figure salary.
The quarterback is someone from an op-
posing team, but you must play him in the
name of equal opportunity.
If the crowd happens to boo the oppos-
ing team, they will be bussed to sensitive
training sessions.
If a touchdown is scored, each team gets
three points the haves must (by law) share
what they have with those who have not
(even though they may do nothing but will-
ing sit on the bench).
The government will determine what the
team eats so no one gets fat or develops a
government-banned illness.
The team must travel by bicycle to reduce
the carbon footprint. And, if the announcer
applauds a good play by your team, he must
spend the same amount of time applauding
the other team in the name of fairness.
No, I don't want the government to take
over football. It sadly would turn out like
the other things we let the government take
over.

Another kind of New Year's


I recently heard someone speak on what
we need for our youth and the tragedy of
what happens when the resources are not
there.
My question was "How will we pay for
it?" and the speaker said "Exactly!"
My thoughts were not with "What do we
need that we can't afford?" but "What do
we have at our command?"
One problem that the country faces, the
world faces is .... Stress!
Many that are out of work are worried
about finding work; we have a high num-
ber here in this county. Many that work are
worried about how long the job will last; we
also have lots of other worries as well.
Many are worried about the world situa-
tion, the economy, the wars, the fear of dis-
ease, the fear over increased violence affect-
ing them personally... and on and on.
As I reflected on "Stress" and "Worry" the
search for direction brought to mind an ad-
monition from the Lord; "Do not worry..."
He writes (Matthew 6:25-34) that we're
not supposed to do it, but to seek God first.
He cautions not to worry about tomor-
row, adding that each day has enough trou-
ble of its own(v.34). That's for sure!
How easy it is to say "Don't worry!"... all
of the times I've heard it.
Certainly, not easy advice to follow; but is
there something that can be done?
The answer is "Yes, there is!" If I cannot
always avoid worrying about what is going
on in my life; at least I can avoid adding to
the worries of others. I know that there are
people worried about their jobs; I have of-
fered to help where I can to find another job
if the need arises. I know of people that are
worried about their family; I've offered to
find them intervention or to help with the
issues. I know of people that are worried
about the economy; I tell them what I have
to give away and what I do not have to
give.
In this latter case, I try to find other re-
sources that will help or a strategy to make
do with what is available.
Do not worry? I will work to help oth-
ers avoid worries; if I can't always avoid it
myself, I can make life more worry-free for
those around me!
Parents and children, bosses and employ-
ees, clergy and congregations, teachers and
students; do what you have to do, but gently
and with kindness.
The world can be a better place after all;
maybe by limiting the worries of others as
best we can; we do something very Godly!

on. A report I read taken from the Census
Bureau, showed Hendry County among the
poorest counties in Florida; given the mean
income of those who are working.
Unemployment was reported to be over
15% a high figure, too.

changed all of that.
Pepper is my four-legged child who waits

Veteran's documents is essential to determine benefits

GLADES/HENDRY Veterans or their sur-
viving spouses and families must have a key
document called a DD2-14 before VA ben-
efits can be determined. Veterans are issued
this important paperwork upon their honor-
able discharge since World War II.
The DD2-14 is the foundation for all ser-
vices a veteran can receive. VA home loans,
education funds, disability income, medical
help and burial help cannot happen without
it. "Without it, they are dead in the water,"
said Jim Herrington, Glades County Veterans
Service Officer.
If it is lost, the vet needs to contact his
county veterans service officer so another
can be sent directly from the Veterans Ad-
ministration. Mr. Herrington mentioned the
DD2-14 needs to be kept in a safe place with
other important papers such as wills, insur-

also reportedly advised that Angela Wofford
would drive him to Moore Haven.
In the early hours of Dec. 4, Agent Fonse-
ca was contacted by Madden who stated he
was in the area. The agent exited the apart-
ment and he observed a dark four-door se-
dan. According to an arrest report, the agent
advised that Angela Wofford was the driver
and Joe Madden was the front passenger.
Two unidentified passengers were in the
back seat.
Joe Madden followed Agent Fonseca into
the apartment where Sergeant Woodruff
was waiting. According to the arrest report,
the suspect handed the agent two plastic
baggies of marijuana in exchange for $300,
which also included gas money for the driv-
er of the sedan.
The PBCSO agent walked with Mr. Mad-
den back to the sedan where the suspect,
Angela Wofford, mentioned he could call
anytime he needed any. The two suspects
and two unidentified passengers left in the
sedan. The illegal substance was turned
over to GCSO as evidence.
On Dec. 9, Agent Fonseca contacted Mr.
Madden for another purchase. The suspect

access to the DD2-14 and take it immediate-
ly to a funeral director. If the spouse or rela-

with more expenses or wait months for pa-
perwork to be completed.
Funeral home directors like Cecil Akin,
Akin Davis Funeral Homes, can assist families
during difficult times when a beloved veter-
an passes away. Mr. Akin commented once
the DD2-14 is brought to a director, he can
find out what benefits the vet was entitled to
receive. According to Mr. Akin, benefits will
vary depending upon the time-period that a
veteran served his or her country. The dates
of service for World War II and Korean War
vets may reflect more entitlements than oth-
er periods of service. Sometimes a vet will


advised that the agent would have to meet
him in LaBelle to complete the transaction.
LaBelle is in Hendry County, and the Hen-
dry County Sheriff's Office was contacted
in order to complete arrangements. Then,
Agent Fonseca and Sergeant Woodruff met
with the suspect at the Trading Post Plaza on
SR 80 in LaBelle; whereby the suspect sold
three ounces to the undercover officers for
$420.
The suspect, Joseph Scott Madden, 30, of
LaBelle, was taken into custody by the Hen-
dry County Sheriff's Office. Agent Fonseca
advised Mr. Madden that he would also be
charged in Glades County for an illegal sale.
The suspect cooperated and turned over an
additional 3 to 4 ounces of marijuana.
The PBCSO Agent Fonseca and Sergeant
Woodruff requested a Glades Countywarrant
on Mr. Madden for possession of marijuana
with intent to sell, and for sale of marijuana.
It should be noted that the Moore Haven
transaction of Dec. 4 took place within 1,000
feet of Moore Haven High School.
On Dec. 11, the suspect, Angela Dawn
Wofford, 36, of LaBelle, was taken into cus-
tody and charged with marijuana sale within
1,000 feet of a school, and marijuana pos-
session within 1,000 feet of a school. Bond
was set at $25,000.

etery, but families may not be able to choose
the one were their beloved vet is laid to rest.
There are national cemeteries in the Florida
cities of Bushnell and Lakeworth. The Ar-
lington National Cemetery has specific mili-
tary service requirements before a burial is
granted there. It depends on rank and duty.
Also, Cecil Akin mentioned the degree of
burial accompaniments may reflect the area
where the veteran lived. Local American Le-
gion and Veterans of Foreign Wars organiza-
tions will assist at funerals with certain op-
tions, and it depends on the dates of service,
rank and duty that the veteran had.
Sometimes a volunteer in uniform from
one of the organizations will present an
American Flag to the widowed spouse at the
time of burial. Sometimes there may be a
color guard. These measures reflect the size
of the group's membership and how many

bottles belonged to her and they contained
urine. The suspect explained that she used it
in case of urine tests for employment. How-
ever, according to an arrest report, since the
fluid was clear, it did not appear to be urine.
The passenger known as Massengill was
then identified as Sigeal Dewayne Stockton,
31, of Panama City. Stockton was found to
have active warrants out of Bay County. The
suspect advised that he did not have medical
needs for hypodermic syringes.
According to an arrest report, Stockton
denied any involvement, and said that Glenn
has a "meth" problem and she should seek
help. The suspect refused to comment on
the used syringe.
The fluid in the used syringe and two bot-
tles were tested separately. Each was tested
three times and resulted positive for meth-
amphetamine.
Glenn admitted to using methamphet-
amine injections, and claimed that the pill
bottles were hers, but they did not contain
methamphetamine. The suspect refused to
comment on the used syringe found on the

another is issued. Bereaved families should
consult their funeral director as soon as pos-
sible and present the veteran's DD2-14.

Items of concern found within the ve-
hicle included three unopened packages of
over-the-counter (OTC) sinus medication
and household bleach. Recent laws allow
only one OTC sinus medication package per
person. According to an arrest report, the
items are consistent with the manufacture
of methamphetamine.
The vehicle was not indicated as used
for a mobile "meth" lab, because it did not
contain used lab equipment nor heating
elements. A clear plastic tube and medical
gauze were found in the vehicle. The plastic
tube is the type commonly used as a tourni-
quet, according to the arrest report.
Amanda Louise Glenn was arrested for
possession of methamphetamine over 14
grams-trafficking narcotics and possession
of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set for
$26,000.
Sigeal Dewayne Stockton was arrested
for providing a false name to law enforce-
ment and for providing a fictitious birth date
in order to avoid capture for an outstanding
warrant. He was charged with possession
of drug paraphernalia. Bond was set for
$2,000.
