Hand-made turkey call is local legend
Tom Gaskins, Jr. still

time.
By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

MOORE HAVEN -- The Friends
of the Glades County Public Library
welcomed their first guest speaker
of the season. Tom Gaskins, Jr.
spoke about his father's creation
of a unique wild turkey call.
The elder Gaskins developed
the game call after decades of
hunting experience from the Big
Cypress Swamp, Devil's Garden,
LaBelle and Arcadia to the Fisheat-
ing Creek area of Palmdale in
Glades County. He built a wood-
craft jig about 1946 so he could
develop the one-piece, hand tuned
calls.
Tom Gaskins, Jr. remem-
bers those times well because
he grew up learning woodcraft
and turkey hunting from the old
Florida woodsman. According to

in Moore Haven.
Mr. Gaskins, his father's invention
came along after frustration with a
turkey call he had acquired from a
companion. This game call had a
reed that was glued on to the main
part. It came loose and fell off. The
elder Gaskins worried about it and

Lakeside Medical celebrates first triplets born

Belle Glade, FL -Lakeside Medical Center
has three new reasons to celebrate with the
birth of the hospital's first set of triplets, the
Glades area's first in more than a decade.
Charity Wilson and Necler Legros, both
from Belle Glade, welcomed identical twin
daughters NeKeela and NeKayla Legros, and
a baby boy, Necler Legros IV on Thursday,
October 29. The babies, born at 34 weeks,
weighed 3 lbs, 13 oz., 4 lbs. 2 oz., and 3 lbs.,
14 oz., respectively. All three newborns and
their proud mother are healthy and doing
well. The babies will remain in The Birth-
place at Lakeside Medical Center until they
have gained enough weight to go home.
"The fact that Ms. Wilson went into labor
at 34 weeks is very good," said Dr. Ahmed
Barhoush, a practicing OB/GYN physician
in Belle Glade who delivered the babies.
"Lakeside Medical Center is a beautiful facil-
ity and the veteran nursing and medical staff

did a great job helping to bring these triplets
into the world."
"I still can't believe it," said Ms. Wilson,
who has three other children: seven, three,
and two years old. "They are such a bless-
ing."
Three new babies will mean big changes
for the family. Ms. Wilson, who worked as a
cake decorator, will be a stay-at-home mom
for a while.
According to the most recent Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention's National
Vital Statistics Reports, triplet or higher
births in the U.S. occurred in 153 out of ev-
ery 100,000 births. In 2006, that amounted to
6,118 triplets. The chance of multiple births
can also be an inherited trait. Ms. Wilson's
mother was a twin, and Mr. Legros has a set
of twins in his family.
Ms. Wilson says she found The Birth-
place at Palm Beach County's newest hos-

Tobacco

Free

By Glenda Wilson
On January 1, 2010, Hendry Regional
Medical Center will institute a 'no tobac-
co, smoke-free' policy inside the hospital,
on all its sites and campuses, and on all
associated parking lots.
Currently, employees, medical staff
and visitors must go outside the facilities
to use tobacco products, but as the New
Year begins, tobacco use will be prohib-
ited, both inside and out. Signs will be
posted around the hospital campuses to
alert visitors of the change.
A stop-smoking team, consisting of
hospital employees, began working
months ago to identify and implement
ways to ease the transition for people
who were using tobacco. Craig Cud-
worth, hospital CEO, says, "The new
policy is the right example for healthcare
providers to set for the community. Our
hospital wants to provide an appropriate
healthcare environment."
The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention estimates that each year
nearly one in five U.S. deaths result from
tobacco use, and statistics show that ap-
proximately $150 billion is spent each
year in healthcare for smokers.
For those who want to take this op-
portunity to stop smoking, the hospital is
offering free smoking cessation classes.
Call David Theroux, Cardiopulmonary Di-
rector, at 863-902-3051 for additional in-
formation regarding the class schedules.

A Walk in the Past: A Change in Command

By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum Director
The Second Seminole Indian War (1835-
1842) turned into seven long years, which
tried the patience of our nation's leadership
in Washington and that of the American pub-
lic. The Seminole War also vexed the careers
of several Army Generals that commanded
the armed forces in Florida. Personality con-
flicts, politics and poor military strategies
caused dissention among those chosen to
command in the Florida Theater.
At the beginning of the war, General
Clinch was in command of Eastern Florida,
while General Gaines was in command of
Western Florida. Both Generals were expe-
rienced and able commanders, who had
fought in the pervious First Seminole Indian
War.
General Clinch was a Colonel in the First
Seminole War (1817-1818) under the com-
mand of General Jackson. He directed the
attack on the ill fated Negro Fort (Negro Fort
on the Apalachicola River), which blew up,
when cannon fire from an American gun-
boat hit the fort's powder magazine, kill-
ing most of the men, women and children
within the fort.
As a general and commander of Florida's
Eastern Theater, General Clinch worked dili-
gently with Indian agent Thompson in trying
to persuade the Seminoles to relocate peace-
fully, but to no avail. Most of the Seminoles
refused to leave Florida and finally vented
their anger and frustration on December 28,
1835, when Osceola and other Seminoles
killed Indian Agent Thompson and five other
persons outside Fort King, while fifty miles
away, Seminoles ambushed and decimated
Major Dade's command.
General Clinch retaliated and attempted
to mount a punitive attack against the Semi-
nole's homeland, but was unsuccessful.
The Battle of the Withlacoochee belonged
to neither the Seminoles nor the Americans.
However, the campaign did expose Gen-
eral Clinch's poor decisions and bad tactics,
which could have been disastrous to his
army, save for the intervention of good ole
Lady Luck.
General Clinch's poor results prompted
Washington to place General Scott over the
entire Florida Theater. In response, General
Clinch tendered his resignation to President
Andrew Jackson, who tried to get him to
reconsider. General Clinch refused, and on
September 21, 1836 retired from his military
career. His decision to retire wasn't due to
his lack of success in the Seminole war, but
Washington's decision to put General Scott
in charge. He resigned three months after
General Scott was given the Florida com-
mand.
General Gaines was also angered by
Washington's decision. However, his un-
happiness with General Scott's promotion
went deeper than General Clinch's because
General Gaines had parted ways with Gen-
eral Scott years earlier, due to personal con-
flicts in the Black Hawk Indian War. General
Gaines relations with General Scott would
grow worse in the Seminole War.
In January of 1836, General Gaines re-
ceived news in New Orleans that Major
Dade's force had been attacked and practi-

cally annihilated. He immediately started
preparing his troops to come to the aid of
the beleaguered Fort Brooks (Tampa Bay
area) and Fort King (Ocala area). General
Gaines embarked by ship with 1,100 men
and arrived at Fort Brooke in 1836, where
he then proceeded to Fort King. Due to inad-
equate supplies at Fort King, he was forced
to march back to Fort Brooks. During the
march, he encountered the Seminoles at the
Withlacoochee River and was pinned down
for over a week.
Surrounded and low on supplies, Gen-
eral Gaines sent word to General Clinch at
Fort Drane, requesting reinforcements. Gen-
eral Clinch had earlier received orders from
General Scott to remain at Fort Drane and
was unable to offer assistance to General
Gaines immediately. Humanitarian reasons
eventually won out, forcing General Clinch
to forsake his duties as an officer. He dis-
obeyed General Scott's strict orders and sent
reinforcements to General Gaines.
Afterward, General Gaines marched back
to Fort Drane, where he was forced to share
the sparse accommodations of Fort Drane
for a day with General Scott. John Bemrose,
a medical officer, writes about this meeting,
"I noticed a cold salutation passed between
them. There was no companionship and
evidently there existed distaste, a repelling
power proving that when interests clash,
two of a trade seldom agree."
Later a court of inquiry was held in Mary-
land in late November of 1836 to investigate
the charges and counter charges of General
Gaines and General Scott. During the in-
quiry General Gaines expressed his feelings
concerning General Scott. He said, "I had
reason to apprehend from the tardiness of
his movement, that a disease which Gen-
eral Scott contracted towards me, in August,
1814, had not been completely cured. It
was, probably, that sickness of the spleen,
which the best doctors say find ease only in
the misery of others."
General Scott's military campaigns in
Florida were unsuccessful. In defense,
General Scott wrote letters to Washington,
excusing himself for the many campaign
failures that occurred during his command.
Some of his letters were not kind to the Flor-
ida citizens. He said, "The inhabitants could
see nothing but an Indian in every bush." He
also wrote, "The planters in the recent case
near Tallahassee, who fled without knowl-
edge whether they ran from squaws or war-
riors." Needless to say, General Scott wasn't
popular with the Seminole Indians or the
whites in Florida
Despite General Scott's poor perfor-
mance and image in the Second Seminole
War, he was a great American military tac-
tician in the art of European Warfare. He
wrote several books on military tactics. One
publication would later become a standard
manual for the United States Federal Army
during the Civil War. Today he is best known
in American Military History for the "Ana-
conda Plan," a brilliant Civil War plan that
played an important role in the defeat of the
South.
Washington delicately reassigned Gener-
al Scott to Alabama to subdue hostile Creeks
that might join the Seminoles. In Florida, he

was eventually replaced by Major General
Thomas Jesup in 1836, who engaged the
Seminoles using different tactics. General
Scott tried sending large columns out in an
attempt to force the Seminoles into a set
battle, while General Jesup concentrated
on wearing the Seminoles down. This tactic
would require a much larger military force
that would include not only Army and local
militia, but Marines and Navy.
General Jessup was more successful
but he too would pass on command to an-
other General. In May, 1838, Zachary Taylor
took on the final burden of command in the
Florida Theater, until the Seminole War un-
officially ended in 1842.

Attendance low at drug coalition meetings

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

MOORE HAVEN -- The Drug Free Glades
Coalition met on Nov. 18, which was a
Wednesday.
Previously, the meeting dates were on
Tuesday, but that has changed to Wednes-
days in an effort to make it easier for mem-
bers to attend coalition meetings.
The Glades County Health Department
has a large responsibility placed in its hands,
due to the rural county having a high per-
centage of tobacco use.
They are responsible for the coalition
which runs on grant funds, and must adhere
to state guidelines.
Health department workers are aware
that the inconsistency of attendance has not
allowed the coalition to follow up with im-
portant issues that have been brought up in
previous meetings by community members
and state experts.
Low attendance has made it impossible
for the coalition to elect officers and create
policy guidelines.
Drug Free Glades Coalition had its initial
meeting almost one year ago with impres-
sive numbers in attendance.
It was an encouraging beginning, espe-
cially for members who had witnessed the
decline and death of loved ones from the
misuse of alcohol, tobacco, prescription
drugs and illegal drugs.
The purpose of the coalition is to gather
local statistics and inform all residents of
prevention methods.
Now, sponsors of the coalition must also
generate participation in Tobacco Free Part-
nership of Glades County as a additional
component.
The Tobacco Free Partnership mission is
to involve youth and adults in community
prevention and control by reducing expo-
sure to tobacco and protecting all commu-
nity members from the persistent influence
of the tobacco industry.
The tobacco industry has a history of re-
lentlessly using media formats to convince
consumers to use their products.
The industry's ads appeared in newspa-
pers, magazines, on billboards, on radio, in
movies and on television.
According to a former long-time smoker
in LaBelle, radio actors who worked for cig-
arette companies came to the schools in the
1930's and 1940's to sign autographs and
influence youth.
"Those actors posed with us for publicity
photos," said the former smoker.
Fortunately, the LaBelle resident was able
to stop smoking after 60 years of addiction.
During the Nov. 18 meeting, Patricia Ains-
worth, SWAT president, invited members to
a school assembly skit, Nov. 19, created by
Students Working Against Tobacco.
Jennifer Harris spoke to members, too.
She is the region 4 tobacco coordinator for

the state.
Ms. Harris mentioned the place-
ment of tobacco products in retail
establishments, the recent tobacco
tax increase, and how the insurance
industry views tobacco use among
workers.
She told how she had been addict-
ed since she was a teen and that she
had finally quit in 1993.
"I still dream about smoking," said
Jennifer Harris.
Angelica Pena, health department
tobacco prevention, mentioned the
recent poster contest that SWAT did
with elementary students; and its en-
try in the homecoming parade.
She also mentioned the demon-
stration that the department did on
Earth Week in April at Captain Hendry
House in LaBelle.
Contact Angelica Pena, Glades
County Health Department, for details
on the next coalition meeting in Janu-
ary. Call 863-946-0707.

Students working against Tobacco perform heart-felt skit

SWAT team educates peers
on tobacco use

by Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

MOORE HAVEN -- Students Working
Against Tobacco (SWAT) gave a presenta-
tion at the Moore Haven High School audi-
torium, Nov. 19. Patricia Ainsworth, student
SWAT leader, explained that members had
attended workshops on the devastating af-
fects of tobacco use. Students found out
that, nationwide, 88 people a day die from
tobacco related illnesses.
Ms. Ainsworth and her fellow students
took this number to heart, and they created

a skit with a script that was performed at a
MHHS assembly for grades 7-12. Eighty eight
young people were recruited to represent
the 88 who die each day. They wore match-
ing t-shirts and remained very silent. Another
student wore a costume to represent Death.
Outside the steps of the auditorium, shoes
had been arranged into a large number 88.
Chalk drawings representing bodies were
drawn on the sidewalk and bricks with spe-
cial messages written next to them. SWAT
students had obviously put a lot or thought
and work into their presentation.
First, the audience watched a public ser-
vice announcement while the 88 stood by,
remarkably quiet. The assembly show used

Don't be a Thanksgiving
Turkey
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
I've been called a turkey before. No one
wants to be a turkey. Being called a turkey
takes on an even deeper meaning when you
realize the fact that commercially grown
turkey is not one of nature's most intelligent
creatures. As a matter of fact, the domesti-
cated turkey has been described as being "as
brainless as a baseball." Even drinking can
put a strain on turkey intelligence. If a turkey
is outdoors, looking up at the sky when it
starts to rain, it can drown. They're often not
smart enough to close their mouths in the
rain. No one wants to be a turkey.
But at least the turkey has an excuse for
being "bird-brained." There is less excuse
for us human beings. Take the nine lepers
Luke writes about in Luke 17. Jesus had
healed them from a disgusting, painful, and
unsightly skin disease. It was a tremendous
gift. Even more so in that Jesus had made
it possible for them to re-enter society and
reunite with their families. Ten lepers were
healed. But only one leper, and a Samaritan
at that, came back and said, "Thanks."
Talk about turkeys! Ten received God's
blessing, but only one stopped to say
thanks.
What about us? Thanksgiving Day is here.
In which group will we be found? Amongst
the nine who took their blessing and walked
off or with the one who came back to thank
God?
If we want to avoid being "turkeys" this
Thanksgiving, the behavior of that tenth lep-
er might prove instructive.
We are not meant to keep our blessings
to ourselves. "Thanks." is only half of the

word. "Giving" is the other half.
We can make generous giving a part of
our thanks-giving. Remember, every time
we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty,
clothe the naked, visit the sick or the pris-
oner, it's the same thing as doing it for Je-
sus (Matthew 25:31). The tenth leper may
not have had much, but in his gratitude he
shared what he had to give.
This Thanksgiving, don't be a turkey.
In English, the word "think" and the word
"thank" both come from the same root.
Nine out of ten forgot to think and forgot to
thank God for their blessings. But the tenth
leper saw his blessings, gave thanks for his
blessings, and shared his blessings. So can
we.

Thanksgiving: Is it really an
"adult" holiday?
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D. +
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
Does your Church have prayers of asking
always longer than the prayers of thanks-
giving or giving praise? I've visited enough
Churches to note this seems to be a way of
worship in some places. In homes, I expect
such prayers from our children; the young
ones aren't always as developed to the point
of selflessness as us older folks should be.
Adults, however, should be able to devote
as much time to thanking as asking; may-
be even more time. As I was finishing high
school, one of my teachers (she taught alge-
bra and trigonometry) used to write sayings
on the blackboard each day.
I have no idea where she got them; but
one of them stayed with me for these many
years; "Most people pray to Santa Claus
and not God." We grow to maturity in our

families and communities (hopefully!) and
get away from "Me" to "Others and God,"
but shouldn't our worship to God reflect a
more adult offering to Him? Great problems
are not always black-or-white issues, but
shades of gray; Oh, yes, we worship, but do
our prayers and offerings reflect a love for
others or our own needs first? I once was
asked to evaluate a clergy report on his as-
sistant. The clergyman got angry when I
reported back that his criticisms far, far out-
numbered anything good about the helper;
surely the assistant had some good qualities
or he wouldn't have kept him around!
I was instrumental in helping the assis-
tant get a church of his own when the time
came. Despite all of the critical remarks, it
was obvious that there were many good
things about him implied by the report. I
guess we shouldn't despair; Jesus Himself
had the same problem. He was traveling
with His disciples and cautioned them about
"the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
(Matthew 16:5ff)." When He observes the
disciples talking, He asks them what they
were talking about. They said "It is because
we didn't bring any bread(!) v.7" He has to
explain that He is not talking about "bread"
-"How is it that you don't understand that I
was not talking to you about bread? (v. 11)"
food and hunger were not the issue, faulty
teaching was His point. Human nature, be-
ing what it is, keeps human things in the
forefront more often than not.
This came to mind as I began to reflect
on Thanksgiving. We're coming up to a re-
ally special time in our history and our lives;
celebrated in a different way. Unlike Hallow-
een with treats and candies for the young-
sters, or Christmas with gifts and presents;
Thanksgiving is more of a time for reflection
and stepping into an "adult" mode of com-
memorating it. It is one of those occasions

when we can bring to God something a bit
more worthy of what He is in our lives; in
Church and throughout the homes of our
nation. Thanksgiving -that's pleasing to
God. The day is here; we can get it right.

Don't forget to say "Thanks!"
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
In Luke 17, is the story of ten victims of
leprosy. They were forbidden to be near any-
one who did not also have the disease. As
they approached, they would cry out, "Un-
clean, Unclean!" Then Jesus came. They evi-
dently had heard that He had healed other
lepers and they believed in the power of
this man to heal them. So trusting Him, they
went their way at His command, rejoicing,
to find a priest to pronounce them cured.
Jesus searched the empty streets to find the
returning ten who now were healed, but
saw only one, and he a lowly Samaritan. He
fell at Jesus' feet with gratitude and joy, giv-
ing Him thanks. But where were the other
nine?
Where are the people of God, cleansed
from the leprosy of sin? Why are they not
bringing their thanks to God? Have they for-
gotten the lonely life, the unanswered ques-
tions, the hopeless days and loveless years?
Are our pockets so full, and our hearts so
empty we will not take time to bring our
thanksgiving to God? God forbid! When oth-
ers have gone their merry way, drunk their
wine of rejoicing, reveled in the pleasures of
their prosperity; when others have carelessly
forgotten... Let us not forget to give thanks
to God. Give, not just words, they are cheap
and can be bought anywhere. Give Thanks
by living your Thanks. Show God how
thankful you are by doing unto others as you
would have them do unto vou.

this week, and many more are expected as
the winter season sports get underway.
"In Okeechobee, the Parks and Recre-
ation Department is to be congratulated for
being the first to come aboard and start us-
ing the site," said Byrd. "I invite everyone
to go to liii- 'Il ii i.. .. ,/Okeecho-
beeSportsNetwork and take a look at what
they are already doing there."
Glades County Sports Network won't be
limited to the most obvious sports such as
football, baseball and basketball. The site
can support virtually any sports or team ac-
tivity including golf, soccer, cheerleading,
bowling, even fishing and rodeo. While it
is ideal for youth and adult leagues, schools
are encouraged to use the capabilities of the
site as well.
In partnership with the paper, Com-
munity Sports Desk representative Renee
Hawley has been contacting local teams and

leagues to assist and share information on
how to get started using the Glades County
Sports Network. Community Sports Desk
will demonstrate to each league or team
representative how easy it is to submit infor-
mation and use the site.
Ms. Hawley can also provide information
on how participation on the Glades County
Sports Network can provide a financial ben-
efit to leagues and teams using the site.
"I am pleased to let everyone know
there is absolutely no charge for teams and
leagues to participate in Glades County
Sports Network," Byrd said. "The site will
be supported by advertising, and there is an
innovative revenue sharing model. A per-
centage of web advertising sales on the site
will go back to the participating teams and
leagues."
Interested teams and leagues can contact
Renee Hawley by e-mail at rhawley@com-
munitysportsdesk.com. Or call her toll free
at 888-853-7904 for a demonstration or to
get started right away. To advertise on the
site, contact Judy Kasten at 863-763-3134 or
by e-mail at jkasten@strato.net.

Turkey

to make a one-piece turkey call.
The tongue, or reed, is not cut separate
from the main piece. Today, the striker is
hand tuned by his son, Tom, who painstak-
ingly makes them like his dad taught him.
"This call has versatility in tone depend-
ing on how you strike the upper or lower
end," he said.
With practice a turkey hunter can make
sweet notes like the hen's call, or those deep,
raspy tones when the gobbler answers her.
Mr. Gaskins explained in detail that wild tur-
keys do not cluck. He commented that the
more accurate description would be called
a "putt."
The Gaskins turkey call has gained a fol-
lowing of dedicated hunters wherever wild
turkey habitat is located, and they are sold
in various catalogs and praised on internet
blogs.
Tom Gaskins related a story from his dad
that took place right after World War II. The
elder woodsman needed to buy a pick up
truck, which was difficult to acquire after the
war.
He traveled to a Tampa dealer and found
that he had to get on a waiting list that al-
ready had 147 people in front of him. The
salesman commented that about three pick
up trucks a month came in.
When his dad found that the owner of the
dealership was a turkey hunter, he began to
talk and talk about hunting wild turkeys near
his home in the woods of Palmdale. Before

too long, the owner mentioned that if he just
kept on talking, he might get closer to getting
that truck; which is exactly what he did.
Tom Gaskins, Jr. demonstrated the simple
striking technique on the upper and lower
ends of the reed.
He pointed out that "one singular putt"
may be all that a hunter needs in order to
attract interested hens and gobblers. He ad-
vised that the hunter repeat those putts in-
frequently, perhaps every 15 to 45 minutes;
it just depends on time of season, hunting
pressure and the patience of individual tur-
key hunters.
In addition to innovative turkey calls,
the Gaskins family is lovingly remembered
for their unique museum and roadside at-
traction, The Cypress Knee Museum was in
operation in Palmdale, Florida for about 50
years.
It contained some beautiful and rare
specimens of the cypress knees that sprout
above ground near the root system of the
cypress tree. The gnarled knees are nature's
phenomenon that form many shapes like
animals, people or abstract works of art.
Some specimens were used in wood craft
or carpentry. However, it is now illegal to cut
cypress knees. The attraction is no longer
open for business.
Wild turkey hunters can still buy a hand
made game call which is now branded with
the family name and its location in Venus,
Florida. The state's fall turkey hunt ends Nov.
29.
