ORTONA -- The American Le-
gion of Moore Haven sponsored
the Veterans Day event at the
Glades County Cemetery in Or-
tona.
Butch Jones, county commis-
sioner and Vietnam veteran, ex-
plained to the audience that from
now on Veterans Day and Memo-
rial Day will honor local veterans
who played a role in America's
armed services.
Veterans of World War II are
welcome to attend and be recog-
nized because time is moving on.
The invitation includes veterans of
other wars.
Mr Jones read a few letters that

"For all of us you are a hero,"
wrote Gabriella Galvez in her let-

It was a special day that hon-

Hingson, who served with the
172nd Combat Engineer Battalion

people have been recognizing al-
lied soldiers who played a role
in the Liberation of France from
the German invasion. Mr. Hing-
son was awarded a medal that is
France's equivalent to the Con-
gressional Medal of Honor. The
medal was created long ago by
Napolean Bonaparte, and is called
the Chevalier of the French Legion
of Honor. In the French language,
chevalier means knight.
A featured guest speaker was Al
Brown, Iraq Veteran, who served
two tours. He mentioned how he
was in awe of the fire power that
the United States has. "It is an hon-
or to have fought for our country,"

Gardeners attract Glades County dry

MOORE HAVEN -- The Glades
County Garden Club met on Nov.
3 to form their plans for the year.
New members and visitors are
welcome to met with them on
the first Tuesday of each month.
The meetings are held outdoors
under the pavilion in Moore Ha-
ven's city park.
The gardeners hold a "Plants
for School" contest annually
since 1977. In January, they give

plants to local students in fifth
grade who are encouraged to
nurture them for six weeks. The
gardeners go back to schools in
February to judge the best re-
sults, and present awards to sev-
eral winners.
Diana Winiecke, club secre-
tary, explained that milkweed is a
good host plant for some butter-
flies and can be part of an ecol-
ogy-based landscape. Milkweed
does not need much watering,

Letter to the editor

Thanksgiving festival
I was one of many who attended Moore
Haven's Thanksgiving festival at the city's
park.
As I sat on a park bench under a majestic
oak, dripping with moss, I quickly became
mesmerized at the scene unfolding before
me. As though being taken back into a time
long ago where friends, neighbors, fami-
lies of three and four generations, and co-
workers came together to enjoy the gentle

breezes, sunny skies, events, food and drink,
Norman Rockwell would have truly enjoyed
this day.
A toddler, walking along side an elderly
gentleman, stared up at him before being
quickly swept up into his mother's arms,
leaving a smile on the elderly gent's face.
The squeals of children playing on the park's
equipment and other amusement activities,
laughter and friendly conversation of teen-
agers and adults, carried on on the breezes

against a backdrop of the Living Waters Fel-
lowship live band and singers, playing a va-
riety of country and gospel only magnified
the love, pride, caring and friendliness of this
small city.
In a world today of fear and frustration,
this day in Moore Haven was a gift to all
those who attended, and especially myself,
my husband and daughter.
Thank you Moore Haven,
Annie Thomas

Grand theft suspect arrested

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

BUCKHEAD RIDGE -- Glades County
Deputy Sheriff Victor Alvarez responded to
a theft complaint on Hunter Road in Buck-
head Ridge, Nov. 2. He met Charles Greene
who explained that he had allowed Rob-
ert Ernest Sathmary, 45, and a woman, to
live at the residence on Hunter Road. They
were supposed to stay there only three
days while they finished some work.
Mr. Greene further explained this had
happened last May. He was unable to ask
them to move out of the residence because
soon afterwards he was severely injured in
an accident. That is why he waited until to-
day to speak to them, and found that they
had moved out. Mr. Greene noticed that a
trailer and several items were missing, ac-
cording to an arrest report.
The victim mentioned they were the
only people at the residence, and he did
not give anyone permission to remove
items from his property. Deputy Sheriff Al-
varez was able to contact Samantha Dod-
son by cell phone. According to an arrest
report, she advised that Robert Sathmary

had told her Mr. Greene asked for the items
to be removed,
The deputy then made contact with Mr.
Sathmary who commented that he had
taken the items, and he also stated that he
had permission to use them. Deputy Sheriff
Alvarez asked Mr. Sathmary about the lo-
cation of the items. According to an arrest
report, he stated he had sold them without
permission. At that time Deputy Sheriff Al-
varez asked Robert Sathmary to come into
the Glades County Sheriff's Office.
Mr. Sathmary informed the deputy that
he was in St. Lucie County. On Nov. 3, the
suspect was given a ride to Glades County
with the assistance of the St. Lucie County
Sheriff's Office and Okeechobee County
Sheriff's Office. Mr. Sathmary advised he
had sold bunk beds and several power
tools because he needed the money. Ac-
cording to an arrest report, he had planned
to travel out of state to see his mother, who
is very ill.
The suspect, Robert Ernest Sathmary,
was charged with two counts of grand
theft.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of
Foreign Wars (VFW) in Clewiston is asking
for your help in collecting 1,000 Thank You
cards that will be sent to troops in Iraq and
Afghanistan for Christmas.
Starting with the Revolution people
have fought for this country to ensure that
everyone enjoys the freedoms America of-
fers.
Citizens have shown their loyalty by fly-
ing the Flag, by honoring our veterans and
by supporting our troops.
Since the horrific attack on the United
States on Sept. 11, 2001 men and women
have volunteered to fight for this country.
They have left the safety of their home,
they have left their families and friends so
that we here can live as free people.
We honor our veterans and remember
them on Patriotic Days, such as Memorial
Day and Veterans Day.
Thousands of people collect items to
send to the brave men and women to ease
their pain while they serve our Country.
Holidays are especially hard on them.
Here we give thanks and give gifts to ex-
press our love and friendship.
Christmas in particular is a sad time for

I Vri-b'Th I I1A, LfLl

many when they are separated by thou-
sands of miles.
Our soldiers need to know that we care
about their mental as well as physical well
being.
The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW is asking
everyone to help us collect 1,000 Thank
You Christmas cards for our troops.
We need your help. We are asking that
everyone, from the very youngest to the
very oldest please make a card (even if you
are not creative it is the personal touch that
means so much).
Or if you prefer you can buy a card,
add a few words of encouragement and
thanks sign your name and add your city
and state.
You can deliver them to the VFW Post or
drop them in mail slot or mail them to the
Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 4185 at 501 S.
Francisco, Clewiston, FL 33440.
The deadline is Nov. 30, to ensure they
get these cards in time for Christmas.
Please help us put a smile on the faces
of those so far away from home and let
them know that America supports them.
Please help us make our goal of 1000
cards.

I inside the emergency entrance at the new Lakeside Medical Center is a
big Emergency Room equipped with technologically advanced life-saving
equipment.
And the first person you'll see is a highly trained, fully qualified nurse.
Which means medical treatment begins immediately and you'll receive the care
you need.
It's health care as up-to-date as the future. And the future is almost here-

There's a wonderful world around us.
Full of fascinating places. Interesting
people. Amazing cultures. Important
challenges. But sadly, our kids are
not getting the chance to learn about
their world. When surveys show that
half of America's youth cannot locate
India or Iraq on a map, then we have
to wonder what they do know about
their world. That's why we created
