Drive-thru store robbery suspects arrested

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

MOORE HAVEN -- GCSO Dep-
uty A. Blachowski responded to a
robbery with a firearm complaint
at the Kountry K Drive-Thru, 385
U.S. 27, on Oct. 6, about 8:49
p.m.
According to the arrest report,
Ashley Patison, store clerk, was on
the phone to store owner, Geary
Adams, who was at the time view-
ing a live-stream surveillance vid-
eo. Adams informed the clerk that
a guy with a black shirt over his
head was coming into the store.
Ms. Patison explained that two

suspects rushed into the store with
a long barreled revolver. A suspect
pointed the firearm at her face,
grabbed her arm and demanded
money from the cash register. The
store clerk explained that she was
in fear for her life, and she opened
the register. The suspects fled on
foot with a sum of money, accord-
ing to an arrest report.
The clerk and witnesses de-
scribed the two suspects to depu-
ties. Fingerprints were taken at
the scene, and surveillance video
was reviewed. Later that evening,
Detective Sergeant M. Pepitone
interviewed one suspect, John Ed-
ward Cox, Jr., 18. His confirmed

fingerprints had been located on
the store's cash drawer. Mr. Cox
was placed under arrest for armed
robbery, grand theft, battery and
aggravated assault.
The next day, Oct. 7, more tes-
timonies to the event were taken,
and lineup photos examined. The
store surveillance video was again
reviewed and details of the second
suspect's apparel and appearance
were examined.
The next day on Oct. 8 about 9
p.m., the store clerk called Detec-
tive Sergeant Pepitone to tell him
that a man resembling the second
suspect had just come to the store.
The surveillance video of this inci-

dent was reviewed and an arrest
warrant was issued for alleged
suspect, David Scott Jones, 18, for
armed robbery and grand theft.
A third unidentified suspect
was alleged to have been a "look-
out" during the robbery.
On Oct. 28, Deputy Victor Alva-
rez made contact with the alleged
suspect, David Scott Jones, who
ran when the deputy tried to talk
to him.
The deputy observed that Da-
vid Jones ran into a residence at
428 Railroad Avenue. Additional
units arrived to the house, and

Pahokee Blue Devils forced to forfeit district games

Ineligible player reportedly
causes Pahokee to lose
District 7-2B title

By Naji Tobias
INI Florida
PAHOKEE The Florida High School Ath-
letic Association (FHSAA) discovered last
week that the Pahokee Blue Devils used an
academically ineligible player on its team.
With the finding, the FHSAA stripped Pa-
hokee of two of its District 7-2B wins, as the
team found themselves in a must-win situ-
ation for its final district game against Uni-
versity on Nov. 6. It was determined that the
unidentified ineligible player played in Paho-
kee's two district wins over Inlet Grove and
Cardinal Newman.
It has been rumored that a Pahokee High

School representative changed the player's
grade point average (GPA) from a 1.8 to a
2.1, but upon being told of it, Principal Ariel
Alejo could not confirm the alleged happen-
ing. According to FHSAA rules, an athlete
must have at least a 2.0 GPA to play in any
high school sport.
That had to be particularly upsetting,
since Pahokee defeated these two fellow
District 7-2B opponents by scores of 45-0 in
Week 2 and 41-0 in Week 4, respectively.
In a brave and stunning move, Ariel Ale-
jo, the Pahokee High School principal, went
ahead and self-reported the incident to the
FHSAA. At first, the school found out the
player appeared in its home game against
Cardinal Newman. When Principal Alejo
found out about it, he said "we immediately
reported it to the FHSAA and sent a letter to
Cardinal Newman High School' on this in-
cident."

"We self-reported because that is the
right thing to do," Alejo said. "We realize
that we had inadvertently had a young man
that wasn't eligible. The player is no longer
on our team."
Not long after that discovery, Alejo re-
portedly ordered Blaze Thompson, the head
coach, and his coaching staff to look care-
fully at all the season's game tapes to make
sure the player didn't appear in any more
games. Unfortunately for them, the opposite
was found to be true.
"We found out he (the ineligible player)
played in other games as well, so we report-
ed that to the state as well," Alejo said.
Alejo confirmed that the Inlet Grove
game was the other one in which the ineli-
gible player appeared. Once that happened,
Pahokee suddenly found itself in a bind as it
went from 5-0 to 3-2 in District 7-2B play.
If Pahokee didn't commit this self-inflict-

ed violation, it would have won the district
with a 6-0 record, with the team smashing
University, 33-0, on the road Nov. 6.
However, those two losses put Pahokee's
playoff hopes in jeopardy and effectively
gave North Broward Prep (5-1 in District
7-2B play) the District 7-2B title.
A letter was sent to Inlet Grove High
School on Nov. 4 in Pahokee's effort to apol-
ogize for the infraction.
"We're bringing everything out in the
open and are complying with the FHSAA
procedures," Alejo said. "We have nothing
else to say about it until we receive a reply
from the FHSAA."
Alejo reportedly barred Thompson, Ath-
letic Director Tom Mejia and any other school
representative (player, coach or administra-
tor) from commenting on this matter.
The incident is still reportedly under fur-
ther investigation by the FHSAA.

Ladies Auxiliary needs your help thanking America's troops

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of
Foreign Wars (VFW) in Clewiston is asking
for your help in collecting 1,000 Thank You
cards that will be sent to troops in Iraq and
Afghanistan for Christmas.
Starting with the Revolution people have
fought for this country to ensure that every-
one enjoys the freedoms America offers.
Citizens have shown their loyalty by fly-
ing the Flag, by honoring our veterans and
by supporting our troops.
Since the horrific attack on the United
States on Sept. 11, 2001 men and women
have volunteered to fight for this country.

They have left the safety of their home,
they have left their families and friends so
that we here can live as free people.
We honor our veterans and remember
them on Patriotic Days, such as Memorial
Day and Veterans Day.
Thousands of people collect items to
send to the brave men and women to ease
their pain while they serve our Country.
Holidays are especially hard on them.
Here we give thanks and give gifts to ex-
press our love and friendship.
Christmas in particular is a sad time for
many when they are separated by thou-

sands of miles.
Our soldiers need to know that we care
about their mental as well as physical well
being.
The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW is asking
everyone to help us collect 1,000 Thank You
Christmas cards for our troops.
We need your help. We are asking that
everyone, from the very youngest to the
very oldest please make a card (even if you
are not creative it is the personal touch that
means so much).
Or if you prefer you can buy a card, add
a few words of encouragement and thanks

sign your name and add your city and
state.
You can deliver them to the VFW Post or
drop them in mail slot or mail them to the
Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 4185 at 501 S.
Francisco, Clewiston, FL 33440.
The deadline is Nov. 30, to ensure they
get these cards in time for Christmas.
Please help us put a smile on the faces of
those so far away from home and let them
know that America supports them.
Please help us make our goal of 1000
cards.

Clewiston Tigers fall

from playoff picture

By Jeff Barwick
A group of Tigers won on Friday night at
Cane Field but it was the wrong bunch.
Dunbar swept Clewiston right out of the
Class 2B post-season playoff picture with a
29-0 victory and also ruined the Homecom-
ing celebration.
A Clewiston win would have given them
the district championship.
Clewiston (3-6) will travel to Okeechobee
this Friday to close out their 2009 campaign
against the Brahmans with kickoff sched-
uled for 7 p.m.
The local Tigers took the opening kick-
off and marched right down the field with
freshman tailback Virthavious Robinson get-
ting 43 yards on 3 carries and starting tail-
back Chris Herring gaining the rest on the
67 yard drive that ran out of steam at the
Dunbar 13.
Kicker Grant Polhill's 29-yard field goal at-
tempt was tipped as it got airborne.
The teams then exchanged punts with the
advantage to Dunbar after a short Clewiston
punt gave them the ball at the Tiger 34.
With the short field and in spite of two
penalties, Dunbar quarterback Chris James
hooked up wideout Joel German on a 15
yard scoring pass with 4:09 left in the open-
ing period.
Dunbar then lined up in a sneaky offen-
sive formation and didn't shift into a extra
point kick alignment and Alante Smith took
the direct snap and scooted across the line
for a 2-point conversion.
Those 8 points proved to be all that Dun-
bar needed for the victory.
Clewiston had a second quarter drive that
sputtered at the Dunbar 33 and then used in-
terceptions by defensive backs Randy Massie
and Damion Smith to kill two other Dunbar
drives. The locals went to intermission trail-
ing 8-0 but still in the ball game.
Unfortunately, the second half scoring
was all for Dunbar.
The visiting Tigers scored two third quar-
ter scores and picked up another in the clos-
ing quarter.
Clewiston started a late third period rally
trying to climb back into the game and were
aided by three Dunbar penalties for 35 yards
and senior fullback Fred Washington's burst
up the middle for 1 yards to give them a first
and goal at the 10.
Robinson went off the left side for 8 yards
on the first play but then Dunbar shut down
the Clewiston running attack on three con-
secutive plays to get the ball on downs.
Dunbar's win gave them the District 2B-6
runner-up berth and they'll travel to Tampa
Catholic in the first round of the playoffs
next week.

Moore Haven's season ends in loss to Bradenton

Pahokee, Glades Central
clinch playoff spots; Glades
Day grabs shutout win

By Naji Tobias
INI Florida
MOORE HAVEN For the second time in
three years, Moore Haven finished its season
with a 4-6 record. The Terriers disappoint-
ing year concluded with a three-game losing
streak, with its latest defeat handed to them
by fellow District 6-1B opponent Bradenton
Christian. Senior Night couldn't have been
much worse for Moore Haven, as Bradenton
Christian raced to a 35-0 halftime lead.
On Bradenton Christian's first three scor-
ing drives, quarterback Sean McCarthy threw
touchdowns to three of his favorite targets
in Colton Goodwin, Josh Thomas and Chase
Carter. The Panthers later scored a defensive
touchdown, thanks to a 45-yard fumble re-
turn by Tucker Owen. To complete the melt-
down, David Schophfer rushed in for a Pan-
ther touchdown on a 7-yard run.
Hall (18 carries, 126 yards, 1 TD) scored
Moore Haven's first touchdown on a 12-yard
run in the third quarter. With that score, Hall
finished his senior season with 21 rushing
touchdowns (22 overall).
He also finished his year with 1,539 yards
on 186 carries, which amounts to 153.9
yards per game. Going back to the game,
Moore Haven would score again on a 30-
yard interception return for a touchdown by
Terry Hallback, as Moore Haven scored 14
points in the third frame. But a 35-14 Moore
Haven deficit quickly spread to 49-14, cour-
tesy of McCarthy fourth touchdown pass of
the game this one to Egan Friedberg on a
35-yard strike later in the third. Bradenton
Christian completed its scoring on a 1-yard
run by Colton Goodwin.
Moore Haven tacked on its last touch-
down of the year with a 18-yard touchdown
pass from Keonte White to Hallback in the
fourth quarter. White's touchdown pass,
unfortunately, was his only completion of
the game, as he went 1-for-9 with 18 yards
and an interception. For the season, White
finished with nine touchdown passes, seven
interceptions and 806 yards.
Hallback was Moore Haven's leading re-
ceiver with 18 receptions for 360 yards and
three touchdowns (eight overall).
Moore Haven lost all five of its District
6-1B games, with the last win overall com-
ing against Merritt Island Christian in its
homecoming game on Oct. 16.
Pahokee 33, University (Fort Lauder-
dale) 0: Forced to forfeit two of its District
7-2B games due to an ineligible player, the
Pahokee Blue Devils came out swinging in
its final district game.
With the Blue Devils needing to win just
to make the Class 2B playoffs, they wasted
very little time in dispatching their district
foe, thanks to a slew of big plays from some
key playmakers.
Chris Dunkley began Pahokee's scoring
onslaught in the first quarter off a 31-yard
punt return for a touchdown to put the Blue
Devils up 7-0 on University.
Then Merill Noel, who was supposed to
begin the season as Pahokee's starting run-

ning back, added to Pahokee's lead in the
second frame on his first of two rushing
touchdowns. Noel's first score was a 2-yard
run, which put Pahokee up 13-0.
Fred Pickett (18 carries, 192 yards) scored
a rushing touchdown on a 40-yard run later
in the second quarter for a 19-0 Blue Devils
lead. Noel (16 carries, 54 yards) ran in a two-
point conversion on that drive to put Paho-
kee up 21-0. To complete Pahokee's first half
scoring, Dunkley (two catches, 64 yards)
hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from
De'Joshua Johnson (12-for-20 passing, 208
yards, 2 TD, 2 INT). Dunkley's touchdown
sent Pahokee into halftime with a 26-0 lead.
Noel scored Pahokee's final touchdown on
a 5-yard run in the third quarter.
Pahokee has now completely destroyed
University for the third year in a row, elimi-
nating this team from the playoffs each time.
With that being said, Pahokee's margin of
victory for the last three years over Univer-
sity is 140-6.
That's combined with Pahokee's 62-0
thrashing of University in 2007's Class 2B
first round playoff game and last year's 45-6
blowout win in the Class 2B second round
of the playoffs. Pahokee (4-2 in District 7-2B;
6-3 overall) is this week's No. 2 team in the
Associated Press Class 2B High School Poll.
The Blue Devils next game after the Muck
Bowl is a road matchup with Chaminade in
the first round of the Class 2B playoffs on
Nov. 20. Pahokee is the District 7-2B runner-
up, while North Broward Prep (5-1 in District
7-2B play) won this district.
Glades Central 27, Suncoast 8: The
Raiders completed District 7-2A play win a
district championship win over the Suncoast
Chargers. L.J. Thomas, who just a few days
ago made an oral college commitment to
Hampton University, threw for three first
half touchdowns to lead Glades Central to
another blowout win.
Thomas (13-for-24 passing, 238 yards, 3
TD) lobbed his touchdown passes to Greg
Dent, Demetrius Evans and Clive Walford in
the game. Dent, a University of Miami com-
mit, began Glades Central's scoring off a 45-
yard punt return for a touchdown in the first
quarter. Then the next and final three Glades
Central touchdowns came off those Thomas
passes to the aforementioned playmakers.
Glades Central (2-0 in District 7-2B play;
9-0 overall) go into Saturday's (Nov. 14)
Muck Bowl against Pahokee with a No. 1
ranking in the AP's latest Class 2A poll and
a No. 20 Rivalsl00 national ranking down
one spot from last week.
Glades Central's next game after Paho-
kee will be a home matchup with Cardinal
Gibbons in the Nov. 20 Class 2A first round
playoff game.
Glades Day 64, Zion Lutheran 0:
Glades Day (3-1 in District 7-1B play; 7-2
overall) notched its most impressive win of
the season, courtesy of six rushing touch-
downs in this game. Kelvin Taylor and Will
Zipperer scored two touchdowns each,
while Joe Jenco and Taylor Mann added one
rushing score each.
Tanner Redish (5-for-6 passing, 116 yards,
2 TD) threw for his touchdown passes to
Johntavious Brown and Clint Johnson.
Glades Day's next game is its home fi-
nale against District 7-1B opponent Master's

Academy. Since the Gators clinched a play- Week 11 games
off berth as the District 7-1B runner-up, its Glades Dayvs. Master's Academy Friday,
Class 1B first round playoff game will be on Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Glades Central vs. Pa-
the road against MacArthur North (Miami) hokee (MUCK BOWL) Saturday, Nov. 14
at 6 p.m.
on Nov. 20.

A lesson to be Learned in the Seminole War

By Butch Wilson
Clewiston Museum
For the third time in four months the
United States military forces had engaged
the Seminoles in the field of battle. The first
engagement had all but annihilated Major
Dade's force of 108 men. In a second en-
gagement, General Clinch's army of 250 was
separated from the main force of volunteers
and almost overwhelmed. A third engage-
ment left General Gaines' army of 1,100 men
surrounded and besieged for over a week.
Dade's destroyed force and the two other
near disastrous encounters with the Semi-
noles came as a surprise to both the United
States government and its citizens. Ameri-
cans began asking the same question, "How
could an Indian nation that numbered 4,000
to 5,000 inflict such havoc on an army that
belonged to a nation of 15 million?"
It was a question that for centuries had
already echoed many times through the an-
nals of mankind because history repeats it-
self. Countless times, countries superior in
arms and technology had misjudged their
weaker opponents and reaped a whirlwind.
In 1835, the United States had, unknowingly,
underestimated the Seminoles and was now
paying the price.
The United States did indeed have a
much larger population than the Seminoles,
but the blunt of the fight would fall not on
the nation, but the nation's military forces.
When the Second Seminole War started in
1835, the United States army consisted of
603 officers and 6,595 enlisted men. Its navy
had 746 officers and 4,801, while the Marine
Corp consisted of 68 officers and 1,349 en-

listed men. The army was distributed at 53
posts across the nation with only a small
remnant stationed in Florida.
In 1835, the small and inadequate mili-
tary forces posted in Florida were faced with
the Herculean task of patrolling thousands
of square miles of wilderness, protecting ci-
vilians and fighting a cunning foe that was
better armed and trained in wilderness fight-
ing.
John Bemrose, who served with an
American medical unit in Florida, was an
eye witness before and during the Second
Seminole War. He wrote the following,
"But where I stood amongst a group of
them watching our men at target practice,
I could not help but see their (the Indians)
faces would express to each other a sense
of the ridiculous, intuitively conveying to me
their knowledge of our inferiority if opposed
to them in the native wilds. And I cannot
help thinking that during these five peace-
ful moons they saw too much and formed
their plans accordingly. How common it is
for the civilized and the trained combatant
to teach themselves to despise these wild
men, thereby entailing upon themselves de-
feat and disaster! The true policy is never to
despise an enemy."
When the Second Seminole War began,
American generals were still adhering to
European tactics that employed well in the
open fields of Europe, but failed miserably
when used against the Native American. The
United States Army's use of inefficient tac-
tics was further offset by the enlisted men
who joined the army. Many were illiterate
and dredged from the not so promising el-
ements of society. The enlistment problem

was further compiled by the large percent-
age of soldiers that were foreigners who
enlisted in the army because the transition
into America culture from the old world was
simply too hard. In 1835, Bemrose listed the
following nationalities around Fort Drane:
Nova Scotian, Swedish, Canadian, Polish,
Scot, Irish, French, German, and Minorcan.
It should also be noted that out of 104 men
killed in the Dade Massacre, 43 were foreign-
ers.
Most of the American soldiers were
armed with the 1816 army muskets (69 cal),
which were inferior to the Cuban Spanish
rifle, a breech-loader (small bore rifle, but
caliber unknown) that could be loaded and
fired much faster than the 1816 army mus-
ket. The soldier's musket ball would wobble
out of the fired musket and lose its accu-
racy quickly, while the Seminole's rifle had
grooves in the barrel that made the lead ball
spiral, thus maintaining a much more accu-
rate path.
The deadly accuracy of the Spanish rifle
placed a man's life at stake up to several
hundred yards, while the musket's killing
zone was limited to a mere one hundred
yards. Some soldiers' journals reported the
Indians were shooting and hitting soldiers at
ranges, which rendered the army muskets
useless.
The Spanish Cuban rifle did have its faults.
After the Battle of Withlacoochee, Bemrose
said, "Had the bore of the Indian rifle been
a large one the tale would have been differ-
ent. As it was, the wounds were dangerous
and vitally situated, to wit, in the lungs, head,
face, and abdomen, but owing to the small-
ness of the balls only one out of more than

Author and connoisseur of great Florida
food Andy Huse will make a presentation
at The Clewiston Museum at 7 p.m. on
Thursday, Nov. 19. Huse, who is a librar-
ian at the University of South Florida, is a
frequent contributor to publications in the
Tampa Bay area and has recently published
the famous Columbia Restaurant's centen-
nial cookbook.
The presentation for this event is entitled
Florida's Delicious History: A Gastronomic
Journey through Modern Florida. Florida's
food and restaurants are as diverse as its
people, and have changed throughout the
20th century. Huse offers an hour-long gus-
tatory romp through modern Florida's cui-
sine, with a look back at union soup houses,
African-American jook joints, shady speak-
easies, drive-in burger stands, barbecue
pits, fish fries, and palaces of luxurious lei-
sure. From the rarefied cuisine of the super-
rich to the humble home-style foods of city
and hamlet, food habits queasy and quirky,
timeless and trendy, are explored.
Following the presentation, attendees
can meet Mr. Huse and share some of their
favorite food stories. Complimentary tours

100 cases (and having possibly 250 wounds)

The army purchased the M1819 Hall rifle,
which was a fast breech loading rifle (Load-
ed from the breech and not the barrel), but
it was reported to be distributed among the
troops at a ratio of one M1819 rifle to every
20 muskets issued. The M1819 Hall rifle was
a fast loader, but sometimes jammed, ren-
dering it useless in battle.
The Seminoles were determined and pre-
pared to do battle at the beginning of the Sec-
ond Seminole Indian War. They started with
adequate arms and manpower, much like
the later Confederate Army did in the Civil
War, but the tide of battle would change.
The Seminoles were soon outnumbered,
while their weapons of war and supplies
became hard to secure, due to blockades,
forcing them to fight a guerilla war, rather
than an offensive war against the United
States forces.
I hope you have enjoyed this story. Please

A Carriage

without a Horse

The Horseless Carriage Club of America
is showing vintage cars at the Clewiston
Museum parking lot on November 14, 2009,
from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Please come out with your family and
friends to see; Ford Model T's, 1908 early
model Ford, 1909 early model Ford, 1913
Stanley, 1915 Hudson, 1925 Buick and other
antique cars that once shared the highways
of America with the horse and carriage
The term "Horseless Carriage" applied to
the early automobiles of yesterday because
for centuries the horse was the main mode
of transportation in America.
It was the invention of the combustible
engine in the early 19th century that ushered
in a new technological age, one which rein-
vented the carriage without the horse.
The car show is free to the public, so
come out and enjoy. Please contact the

Show Him No Mercy
By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
The more I've learned about eagles, the
more amazing I find them to be. They mate
for life, they build nests that will last a life-
time, and they ride the storm instead of hid-
ing from the storm.
The eagle teaches its young to fly on their
own. The parent pushes the baby bird out
of the nest and the eaglet tumbles helplessly
through the air, plummeting to earth and
certain death.
But then, just in time, the parent-eagle
swoops under its young, catches the bird on
its own strong, spreading wings, and bears
it aloft again on sturdy pinions to try once
more to fly.
There's really only one enemy that is a se-
rious danger to eagles. Snakes. A snake will
attempt to climb wherever the eagle nest is
and attack the little eaglets.
But pity the poor snake that gets caught
by Mama or Papa Eagle. They will show the
serpent no mercy! They may rip it to shreds
or pick it up with their beak and violently
shake it to death.
They also might pick it up in their talons,
fly high and drop the snake to its death on
the rocks below. Bottom line: they are not
about to let the serpent have what it came
for.
The eagle shows the serpent no mercy
and makes that serpent sorry he ever at-
tacked.
It's no wonder the Bible encourages us
to take note of "the way of an eagle." Like
that eagle, we have a serpent that's trying to
strike out at us.
The devil's first appearance to humans
came in the form of a snake in the first book
of the Bible. In the last book of the Bible,
God still calls him "that ancient serpent
called the devil."
You may or not believe in the devil, but
either way he's actively trying to ruin your
life. In fact, he likes it better when you don't
believe in him. You won't fight an enemy
you don't believe is there.
Much of the hurt, heartache; and shame
in our life is because we've given into Sa-
tan's subtle promptings and to his sinful op-
portunities.
If we belong to Jesus Christ, we belong to
the One the Bible says came "to destroy the
devil's work." We are told to "Submit your-
selves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he
will flee from you." May we claim that vic-
tory Christ has given us over Satan.
Like the eagle with the snake, let us show
Satan no mercy when he comes slithering
towards us.
Also, like the eagle, let us make that old
serpent sorry that he ever got close to our
nest! No compromise. No giving in. No ac-
commodation.

Preserving our Thanksgiving
Heritage
By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
Thanksgiving is a thoroughly American
holiday and a thoroughly religious one as
well. It was begun by early European set-

tiers to this continent as an act of devotion
to the God whom they loved and who they
believed had provided for them through dif-
ficult times.
In recent times, however, the holiday
has fallen on hard times, as our country
has turned more and more away from the
God our Puritan forefathers loved and wor-
shiped.
The Pilgrims are characterized today as
political dissenters who are lauded for their
bold break with a repressive political regime
in England. But their Christian foundations
and their desire to seek a place where they
could worship the God of the Bible are al-
most totally ignored by textbooks and re-
moved by law from the attention of the
American people. We are being sold a politi-
cally correct bill of goods.
The truth is that the Pilgrims and many
of the other early settlers in America were
devoutly religious people. They were con-
cerned about the lack of spirituality in the
countries, and they desired to bring a new
vitality to their new spiritual lives.
When forbidden by their governments
to worship as they saw fit and when per-
secuted because they continued to do so,
they fled to a place where they thought they
would be safe from governmental interfer-
ence in their lives.
In the "New World" they laid the founda-
tion of a Christian way of life that thrived for
200 years.
Now that spiritual foundation is being
threatened by the very people who have
benefited so much from the principles they
now decry.
We must be firm in our convictions that
our founding fathers were not wrong in their
commitment to Jesus Christ.
If we are to remain strong and free to
worship God as our forefathers intended, we
must cling firmly to the values and traditions
that gave our forefathers their courage.
And we must seek after the God who
alone can keep us holy and blameless be-
fore Him.

Veteran's Day: Honoring
those who come to faith by a
difficult path
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D. +
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
Yesterday was Veteran's Day, something
that is related to all of our population if we
think of all who have or had kinfolk in the
military services.
There is a park in Palmyra, New Jersey
named after one of my family that "didn't
come back." Others have come back, bear-
ing the marks of their experiences.
When asked, I try to put a perspective
and give meaning both individually and col-
lectively.
I have reflected on the name of the Church
I serve: Saint Martin's. He was a part of the
Roman Legions, following in the footsteps
of his father, also a Roman legionnaire.
It was on a cold night near Tours, France
that he encountered a beggar who was
freezing and Martin cut his own legionnaire's
cloak in two; sharing it with the beggar.

Little by little he began to understand his
actions as the kind of thing the Lord would
have done, and gradually moved away from
the profession he inherited.
Finally, he resigned his commission and
entered the ministry of the Lord, serving
Him the rest of his life. Apparently, he carried
some of his "rough-and-tumble" ways with
him as he served people in the rural France
but his faith, sincerity, loyalty, and love for
God and his people was never questioned.
Today, many have adopted him as the
"patron saint" of the military and chaplain-
cies. He was well chosen as an example for
the Church I serve; in a rural area and for
people who show faith, loyalty, sincerity and
the love of the Lord. I have often reflected on
another Roman legion officer, a Centurion
(Matthew 8:5ff) who comes to Jesus asking
for help for his sick servant.
The Lord does not put conditions on
him; this warrior who has invaded Israel;
nor does he ask him to change from the
often-brutal and destructive life of a Roman
soldier. Instead, Jesus notes "I tell you the
truth. I have not found anyone in Israel with
such great faith! (v.10)"
In spite of his profession and his being
of the "enemy camp", the man's prayer is
granted. Faith sometimes comes by trials and
winding up in difficult situations; by being
caught up in things that challenge our sen-
sibilities and consciences. My observation is
that those who turn to God in the most dif-
ficult of times or situations have something
to teach us about faith.
They have learned that there is no other
place to go; and their faith is very real, very
solid. The Lord accepted him where he was,
for what he was and who he was without
conditions.
No doubt the Centurion was a spiritual
predecessor of Saint Martin and I can't help
but believe that he continued to grow in
grace and faith.
Lest we forget those who find themselves
in the hard places of life, we need to remem-
ber their great capacities for faith, where it
comes from and the costs they have paid so
that we can witness to our own.

Garbage bills could rise in Glades County

By Charles M. Murphy
INI Florida
Glades County could increase tipping
fees at their landfill near Ortona.
Auditors suggested the county study the
existing tipping fees in their annual report
because the landfill has created a financial
drain on the County budget.
Globex Engineering and Development,
Inc. will be paid $13,650 to conduct a study
which will determine how much residents
must pay to drop off their waste at the land-
fill.
The analysis will include an examination
of operational costs, such as recycling, leach
ate treatment, long term care, maintenance,
environmental compliance costs, and recy-
cling.
County Manager Wendell Taylor said the
existing tipping fee is $50 per ton. The City
pays $32 per ton for their tipping fee.
Chairman Russell Echols said the County

must get their financial house in order when
it comes to the landfill.
In other business the Commission voted
(4-1) to rezone three acres at 29513 US High-
way 27 in Moore Haven from industrial to
open use agriculture.
The A.C.L. Group, Incorporated property
was cited by code enforcement on May 19,
for having livestock breeding, stabling and
grazing on the property which were not per-
mitted in industrially zoned areas.
Glades County Code Enforcement Of-
ficials said the property is now in compli-
ance.
Some neighbors still objected to rezoning
the property for a hog operation in an area
commonly used for industry.
Commissioner Donna Storter argued
against the rezoning. She said a code viola-
tion existed and that the proposed hog farm
would be a nuisance, "We don't need three
more acres of agriculture in Glades Coun-
ty."

The commission also delayed a vote to
convey seven acres near County Road 720
and State Road 78 to the City of Moore Ha-
ven so they can construct a water storage
and processing facility. The city agreed to al-
low the county to connect water service free
of charge for the new health clinic.
Commissioner Paul Beck questioned
why the County would give away property
to the City without compensation. Beck
said he didn't think all county residents, like
residents in Lakeport and Buckhead Ridge,
should have to support the Moore Haven
water system.
Commissioner Butch Jones suggested
the County trade for a smaller parcel in the
City of Moore Haven that currently houses
the water tower.
Commissioner Echols said he thinks
there would be significant benefits for many
residents of Glades County if potable water
service is extended outside the city limits.
The Commission also scheduled votes on

ordinances that rescind all impact fees for
new development through February, 2011.
The public hearing was scheduled for Nov.
23 at 6 p.m. The Commission approved four
ordinances in 2008 to rescind the impact
fees until December, 2009.
The Commission approved a resolution
that supports the development of large so-
lar energy facilities in Florida and in Glades
County.
The Commission also approved a
$480,000 contract with Aim Engineering to
provide professional services related to a
widening of County Road 731, Rainey Slough
Road, from Route 74 to Highlands County.
The money will come from a grant from the
Florida Department of Transportation.
The Commission also approved a con-
tract with Wright Construction of Fort Myers
to serve as the Contract Manager for the con-
struction of the new Public Health Clinic.

Local anglers report positive fishing results

Lake Okeechobee clarity,
natural grasses, and large
numbers of fry and bait fish
improve

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

GLADES COUNTY -- Recently, anglers on
Lake Okeechobee's west bank and along the
Caloosahatchee River have reported positive
fishing results. Glades County borders the
west side of the big lake from Moore Haven
to Buckhead Ridge.
Moore Haven is a river town where
Lake Okeechobee connects to the Caloo-
sahatchee, and Buckhead Ridge is a fishing
community on the big lake near the Kissim-
mee River.
David Dannenhauer, Moore Haven, is a
bait and tackle store owner who has hope
for the health of the lake. He commented
that bass are being caught in pretty good

numbers at the Monkey Box, the north
shore, in grass lines and out front off Obser-
vation Shoal.
The chosen baits are skinny dippers, ul-
tra-vibe speed worms, senko type baits and
flukes. Last year's slot limits continue for all
bass. Bass must be released if they are less
than 18 inches. Five bass per angler may be
kept if over 18 inches. However, only one
may be kept if it is over 22 inches.
Crappie, or speckled perch, have started
to bite but the going is slow. Anglers are try-
ing the traditional crappie areas using jigs or
minnows.
Last year's slot limits continue with the
release of crappie that are less than 10 inch-
es. There is a limit of 25 per angler.
According to Mr. Dannenhauer, bluegill
and cichlids are still being caught on warm
days with crickets or worms.
The fall snook season is in full swing and
ends Nov. 30 at midnight. Most are caught at
the Ortona spillway on the Caloosahatchee,
but it is slower at the Moore Haven spillway
due to lack of releases. Spring snook season
begins on March 1.

Catfish are being caught in the Caloos-
hatchee River with nightcrawlers, chicken
liver and bait cut from shiners or shad.
Frog hunters report a fairly good harvest in
marshes on the lake inside the main grass
line. Sometimes it is necessary to use an air-
boat.
Billy "Bluegill Bill" Proctor of Moore Ha-
ven mentioned that crappie anglers should
be vigilant and listen carefully to reports of
crappie biting. There is the possibility that a
weather change could encourage their feed-
ing habits.
The Cheers & Beers establishment in
Lakeport commented that patrons are en-
joying the improved bass fishing in the lake
and canals since the weather has been mild-
er. Lakeport is located on Lake Okeechobee
near Fisheating Bay and Harney Pond Ca-
nal.
David Dannenhauer mentioned he has
received a lot of positive comments referring
to the effect of the slow rise in lake water
level that was due to regular rainfall instead
of a major storm. Anglers have seen very
large numbers of fry and bait fish.

"Clarity of water and natural grasses are
the highlight of the comeback for the lake,"
said Mr. Dannenhauer of Mickey's Bait and
Tackle.
He further explained that the lake is right
at 14 feet in depth. It is not a lot considering
the approach of winter which is the driest
season. It would be best if the level was 15
to 15.5 feet.
If water is held to a sufficient level, an-
glers look forward to a spring season that
will be better after several years of drought.
However, if the lake is set for a lower wa-
ter level and there is little rain, then the lake
may have another stressful year and natural
grasses will be exposed.
Gun hunting season for deer began Oct.
31 and ends Jan. 10. The fall turkey hunt be-
gins Nov. 14 and ends Nov. 29. Dove season
starts a second phase from Nov. 14 through
Nov. 29.
The first phase of the regular duck sea-
son is Nov. 21-29. The second phase hunt for
regular duck will be Dec. 12 to Jan. 31.

Two arrested in aggravated battery and robbery

Victim taken to hospital
with head injury

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

MOORE HAVEN -- Glades County Sher-
iff's Office responded to a possible robbery
at 714 8th Street about 8:42 p.m. on Oct. 10.
The victim, Willard Melear, 64, was found
outdoors with lacerations and contusions to

his face. According to an arrest report, the
victim was disoriented and taken to the Hen-
dry Regional by Glades EMS. At the hospital
Mr. Melear discovered that approximately
$820 and his cell phone were missing.
A witness had called in the incident and
advised law enforcement officers that she
was outdoors and heard noises. The witness
saw two unidentified suspects standing over
the victim, and they appeared to be hitting
and kicking the victim, according to an ar-
rest report.

On Oct. 5, Detective Sergeant R. Baker
talked further with the victim who explained
that on the night of the incident he came
home and soon afterwards heard a noise at
the back of his house and he went to see
what happened. Due to the victim's exhaus-
tion from a head injury, the detective ser-
geant concluded his interview at that time.
Detective Sergeant Baker resumed the inter-
view with the victim on Oct. 13.
At that time two alleged suspects were
identified from several photo lineups. The

detective sergeant determined that there
was probable cause to arrest alleged sus-
pects, John Edward Cox, Jr., 18; and David
Scott Jones, 18.
The suspect, John Edward Cox, Jr. was
arrested on Oct. 16 for the charges of aggra-
vated battery-cause bodily harm or disabil-
ity, and of robbery-no firearm. Bond was set
at $55,000. David Scott Jones, suspect, was
later arrested on Oct. 28.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes remembers Amy Lundy

People of all ages can
become organ donors

By Nena Bolan
Glades County Democrat

MOORE HAVEN -- On Nov. 3, the local
chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes
(FCA) held a memorial at Moore Haven High
School in honor of Amy Lundy, who passed
away one year ago. The event was a celebra-
tion of her life and an appreciation for her

decision to be an organ donor. Fellow mem-
bers of FCA spoke about Miss Lundy.
Lindsey Swaford reminded those pres-
ent of Amy Lundy's accomplishments in her
high school career which included an active
involvement in FFA. She was a cheerleader
for four years, a varsity soccer player and a
member of Beta Club.
Warner Ward commented on her de-
cision to be an organ donor. According to
statistics, one organ and tissue donor can
save or improve the lives for as many as 60
people. More than 3,700 Floridians are wait-
ing on a transplant.

"Organ donation is a very selfless act and
one that many of us here today have com-
mitted to since Amy's death as a way to
honor her," he said.
Cale Rives explained to the audience
how his father was present at the memorial
because he received a life saving kidney and
pancreas transplant last year. Cale's father
thanked Amy's parents, Judge Lundy and
Mrs. Lundy, for following through with their
daughter's wish to be an organ donor.
Pink balloons were given to members
of the audience as they left the memorial.
Once they were outside, Amy's family re-

leased their balloons. Then others released
their balloons to the sky a as symbol of their
love and remembrance. Florida residents
can register to become organ donors by vis-
iting online at donatelife.org and creating a
profile.
FCA is a Bible-based Christian ministry
created in 1954. Over one million young
people are impacted every year on school
and college campuses; at summer camps,
retreats, banquets and coaches outreach
events.

Apply now to work with FWC on anchoring regulations

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conserva-
tion Commission (FWC), in consultation
with the Department of Environmental Pro-
tection, wants to work with city and county
governments on the best way to regulate
boats that anchor outside of permitted
mooring fields. Currently, local ordinances
for anchoring are unenforceable outside of
mooring field boundaries.
The FWC is collecting letters of interest
until Nov. 13 from those local governments
that have an interest in establishing moor-

ing ordinances. Of those governments, the
FWC will choose five locations throughout
the state to participate in a pilot program.
The five sites will be selected prior to July
1,2011.
Under the pilot program, the FWC will
work with the selected local governments,
who may establish and enforce FWC-
approved mooring ordinances outside of
a mooring field. The program does not in-
clude ordinances for live-aboard vessels.
"We want to engage all local govern-

ments to consider this," said Maj. Paul Ouel-
lette, leader of the FWC's Boating and Wa-
terways Section. "It is important to promote
boating rights and accessibility, but it is also
important to protect the marine environ-
ment and maritime property, and reduce
the number of abandoned or derelict ves-
sels. We hope this pilot program will help
us shape uniform and consistent regulatory
regimes that do not overburden the recre-
ational boater."
The FWC will submit a report on the pilot

program to the governor and Legislature by
Jan. 1, 2014.
A mooring field is an area of water set
aside with delineated boundaries marked
with permitted uniform waterway markers.
It must have permitted mooring buoys in
which boats are required to attach, in lieu of
dropping an anchor.

program, visit MyFWC .... ..i 1,., ii or send
inquiries to anchoring.mooring@myfwc.

IRS Millions in refunds for thousands of Florida residents

IRS has over $15 Million in Refund Checks
for 10,024 Florida Residents
The Internal Revenue Service is looking
for 10,024 Florida taxpayers who are due re-
fund checks worth more than $15 million.
The checks were returned to the IRS by the
U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address
errors.
"In Florida, the average undeliverable
refund is $1,538", said Mike Dobzinski, IRS
spokesman for Florida. "Last year, the aver-
age was $1,408. We'd like to get this money
back to taxpayers as quickly as possible. All
we need is an updated address and we can
reissue the check."
Nationwide, 107,831 refunds totaling
$123.5 million were returned to the IRS.

Undeliverable refund checks average $1,148
this year, compared to $990 last year. Some
taxpayers are due more than one check.
Average undeliverable refunds rose by 16
percent this year nationwide. Several chang-
es in tax law likely played a role in boosting
refunds, including the First-Time Homebuy-
er's Credit and the Recovery Rebate Credit.
Taxpayers can find out if they are due
a tax refund by visiting the IRS Web site at
www.irs.gov and clicking on "Where's My
Refund." To use this feature, enter informa-
tion from the 2008 tax return including the
Social Security number, filing status and re-
fund amount. Taxpayers will get the status
of their refund check and in some cases also
get instructions to resolve potential account

problems.
Taxpayers can also check on the status
of the refund by calling 1-800-829-1954. Tax-
payers checking on a refund by phone will
be given instructions on how to update their
address.
Dobzinski said refund checks go astray
for reasons that vary with each taxpayer.
Many times it's because a life change -such
as a marriage or divorce -causes an address
change. If a taxpayer moves and does not
notify the IRS or the U.S. Postal Service, a
check sent to their last known address is re-
turned to the IRS.
After moving, taxpayers can ensure the
IRS has their correct address by filing Form
8822, Change of Address, with the IRS. The

form is available on the IRS Web site at
www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-829-3676.
The vast majority of checks mailed out by
the IRS reach their rightful owner every year.
Only a very small percent are returned by
the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable.
Dobzinski said taxpayers can avoid un-
deliverable tax refunds by choosing to have
their refunds deposited directly into a bank
account. Direct deposit guards against un-
delivered, lost or stolen refund checks. It's
available for both paper and e-filed returns.
IRS also encourages taxpayers to e-file
their tax returns. E-file reduces errors and
speeds up refunds.

When the Saints coming marching in
Children from Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church in Buckhead Ridge dressed as saints for a procession before the Sunday Mass on All Saints
Day, Nov. 1. At the Spanish Mass, represented saints included Saint Theresa, Saint Ceceila, Saint Juan Diego, Saint Sebastian, St. Adelaide, St. Helena and
St. George. At the English Mass saints represented included Saint Joseph, Saint Juan Diego, Saint Kateri, Saint Francis, Saint Sebastian and Saint Cecelia.
Children's parents or grandparents made some of the costumes. Sunday school teachers provided some extra costumes. The procession was a hit at both
Masses and may become an annual tradition.

Area HIN1-Swine Flu Mass Vaccination a success

By Pat Dobbins
The Hendry and Glades County Health
Departments held their first H1N1-Swine
Flu mass vaccination clinic last Thursday
evening at West Glades Elementary School.
Over 140 people were vaccinated within
two hours. The lines started forming at 4
p.m. and the vaccinations started promptly
at 4:30 p.m. Those in line included parents
with young children and adults that met the
target groups to receive the vaccine.
The Hendry and Glades County Health
Departments had a team of fourteen peo-
ple which included five nurses and other
well trained staff to assist those waiting in
line. There were strategic stations lined in
the hallway within the school to help with
the flow of people. The first station was
identified as "triage" where people were
interviewed to make sure they met the tar-
get group to receive the vaccine. Then they
proceeded to "registration" where they filled
out paperwork. Once the registration pro-
cess was complete, they received a short
medical screening to decide the dosage and
type of vaccine they would receive. The next
step in the process was the "vaccination sta-
tion". Some parents chose the nasal mist for
their child while other children braved the
needle.
Area residents, Annette Spargo, her son
Hunter Spargo and her daughter Holly Ste-
venson all braved the needle together. They
were within the target group to receive the
vaccine. They all left with a smile on their
face saying that the whole process seemed
to go very smoothly and quickly. Several peo-
ple thanked the Health Department workers
for setting up at the school to provide this
service to the community. Pat Dobbins,
Administrator for the Hendry and Glades
County Health Departments stated "We are
working hard to ensure that the children in
our communities have the opportunity to
get vaccinated for HIN1. We want to thank
the West Glades Elementary School for part-
nering with us for this very important mass
vaccination campaign."
Additionally, the Glades County Sheriff's
Department provided a deputy at the site
to assist with security and crowd control
but there were no issues. The vaccine will
be provided at other scheduled locations
over the next few weeks, so please look for
schedules in the newspapers and on posters
throughout the communities in Hendry and
Glades Counties.
The Hendry County Health Department
has designated two different days and times
that we can accept "walk-ins" to the clinic
for H1N1 vaccinations. LaBelle: Wednesday
afternoons and Friday mornings. Clewiston:
Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons.
The Center for Disease Control and Pre-
vention provides the guidance for the is-
suance of the vaccine, and the Health De-
partments can only vaccinate the targeted
groups which include healthy children over
6 months through 24 years of age, pregnant
women, healthcare and emergency service
personnel, individuals who live with or care
for an infant under 6 months, and those who
are 25 years and older who have a chronic
health condition. If you have any questions
regarding the H1N1-Swine Flu vaccine, you
can call any Health Department or 1-877-
352-3581.

Haynes given 16-year

prison sting

By Eric Kopp
INI Florida
MOORE HAVEN -- A Moore Haven man
with a history of prior drug convictions
was sentenced to 16 years in prison Mon-
day, Oct. 2, during a hearing in the Glades
County Courthouse.
Because of his prior convictions
Chauncey Allen Haynes, 31, was classified
as a habitual felony offender and was look-
ing at a total of 60 years in prison.
Even though Judge Jack E. Lundy agreed
with Assistant State Attorney Jonathan Mar-
tin that Haynes "has a pretty lengthy histo-
ry" he elected to go against the state's rec-
ommendation of a maximum sentence.
Without the habitual felony offender
classification Haynes could have been
sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in
prison.
Haynes' attorney said while he felt
Judge Lundy was a fair-minded judge, he
didn't agree with the sentence.
"I was a little bit surprised, actually," he
said. "Typically, sale (of cocaine) charges
are a little less than that."
According to an arrest affidavit by De-
tective Sergeant Ronny Baker, of the Glades
County Sheriff's Office (GCSO), Haynes
was last arrested in January of this year
on felony charges of sale of cocaine within
1,000 feet of a church, business or school
and possession of cocaine with intent to

sellwithin 1,000
feet of a place
of worship,
business or
school.
That sale,
stated the affi-
davit, was with-
in 1,000 feet
of the Bethel
Church and the
Miracle Deliver-
ance Church.
The affidavit Chauncey Haynes.
states Haynes
sold a substance suspected of being crack
cocaine to a confidential informant dur-
ing a controlled operation staged in Moore
Haven. Sgt. Baker's affidavit states the sus-
pected substance was field tested and indi-
cated a positive result for the presence of
cocaine.
Sgt. Baker said the weight of the sus-
pected cocaine was less than 1 gram.
Records indicate that among his prior
convictions Haynes was found guilty in
Glades County of possession of cocaine in
January of 2006. He was also found guilty
on a felony charge of throwing a deadly
missile on April 3, 2000.
Mr. Sullivan said after Monday's sen-
tencing that he didn't know yet if there will
be an appeal. "That will be up to my cli-
ent," he said.

update scores and stats, as well as add pho-
tos and news for players, family, friends and
all local sports fans to view. Each league or
sports group that participates will have dedi-
cated web pages that will include results,
schedules, stats, photos and more. There
will absolutely no charge to participate in
"Glades County Sports Network." While
the service is perfect for youth and adult rec
leagues, local schools are encouraged to use
the site as well, which will be supported by
advertising.
"Glades County Sports Network" won't
be limited to football, baseball and basket-
ball. The site can support virtually any sports
or team activity including soccer, cheerlead-
ing, rodeo, bowling, golf and many more.
In addition to appearing on the web site,
selected league and team information will
be collected and published in the Democrat
print editions.
"This will add to the coverage and service
we are providing at a time when others are
cutting back," said Glades County Demo-
crat publisher Tom Byrd. "It's a professional

resident Jessica Alvarez was asked if David
Jones was there.
According to an arrest report, Jessica Al-
varez, 20, advised that no one else was in the
house. Since David Jones was seen entering
the house, it was searched by law enforce-
ment officers. The suspect was located in the
bathroom, and escorted out of the house.
According to the arrest report, Jessica

format to showcase our community sports
and provide teams with a very useful tool to
share information with athletes and parents.
I'm especially excited that the site is free to
the teams and leagues, and that it gives back
to help community sports. They are such a
vital part of our communities."
"Our editors are providing contact infor-
mation for area leagues and teams to Com-
munity Sports Desk, and they will gather
all the information necessary to build each
team's profile on Glades County Sports Net-
work," Byrd said. Community Sports Desk
will demonstrate to each league or team
representative how easy it is to submit infor-
mation and use the site."
Community Sports Desk's support staff
will also provide information on how partici-
pation on "Glades County Sports Network"
can provide a financial benefit to leagues
and teams using the site. A portion of all ad
sales and sponsorships will be redistributed
to the participating leagues.
"Glades County Sports Network" is ex-
pected to be fully operational in the next
two to three weeks. Interested teams and
leagues can contact Renee Hawley by e-mail
at rhawley@communitysportsdesk.com Or
call her toll free at 888-853-7904 for a dem-
onstration or to get started right away.

Alvarez caused a disruption when deputies
were exiting the house. She was restrained
and placed in the patrol car; later she was
charged with accessory after the fact of a
first degree felony.
An unidentified male then became very
belligerent towards law enforcement officers
as they escorted Ms. Alvarez to the patrol car.
The unidentified male refused to stop yelling
and go back to the house. He was arrested
for resisting arrest without violence.
