Society invites the public to stop
by the restored Peter Westergaard
House located on Avenue L in
Moore Haven on Halloween night.
The old address is listed as 270 Av-
enue L, and the new address is list-
ed as 256 Avenue L. Visitors should
be able to find the house because
there is a sign out front that identi-
fies the historic home. Home made
goodies will be handed out to trick
or treaters. Parents are encouraged
to come inside and take a look at
the lovely interior.

MOORE HAVEN -- Law enforce-
ment authorities have arrested a
Moore Haven man, Jolgar Desir,
22, in connection with a murder in
Orange Lake on Aug. 1. The sus-
pect was already an inmate at the
Glades County Jail. Sergeant Brian
Spivey, Marion County
Sheriff's Office, transport-
ed Mr. Desir to the Marion
County Jail last Thursday.

GLADES COUNTY -- Melissa

Okeechobee Unit, reported that
four Glades Community Firewise
applications were signed off by
the state office, Oct. 22, and are
en route to National Firewise to
be registered. The four new com-
munities that signed up for Fire-
wise include Ortona, Lakeport,
Buckhead Ridge and Washington
Park.
According to Ms. Yunas, these
communities have decided to
help structural and wildland fire-
fighters by sharing the responsi-
bility for home defense and from
the dangers of wildfires. These are
simple ways to protect a home. A
checklist has been provided for
homeowners.
Glades County has a goal to
be the first Firewise County in the
State of Florida. Out of the 10 com-
munities in Glades, three com-
munities are needed to complete
that goal. One of the three, Port
LaBelle Ranchettes has a Firewise
Day scheduled for December 5.
Next year's goal will be to reach
the last two communities.
Ms. Yunas commented that
collaboration from the area and
the county has been overwhelm-
ing. Muse and Palmdale are al-
ready Firewise. As of yet, Indian
Hills and Horseshoe Acres are
not, but Ms. Yunas has plans for
them, too. The Brighton Reserva-
tion is currently working on its
own Firewise plan.

Program (CRP) Rental

Director for USDA's Farm Service Agency
in Florida today announced that starting
today USDA will begin issuing $2,599,973
in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP)
payments to eligible producers in Florida.
More than $1.7 billion in CRP payments are
being made on 31 million acres across the
country.
"The Conservation Reserve Program
works cooperatively with America's farm-
ers and ranchers to conserve and preserve
the soil and water that we, and numerous
wildlife species, depend on for survival,"
said Folsom.
"These payments represent an invest-
ment in the nation's land that will pay divi-
dends in the form of a cleaner environment
today and for our grandchildren."
The payments announced today are an-
nual rental payments earned on the 66,363
acres enrolled in the CRP, including the
Conservation Reserve Enhancement Pro-
gram and Continuous Sign-Up Program
fiscal year 2009. Producer's holding 1,547
contracts on 1,250 farms will receive an av-
erage of $2,079.98 per farm or $39.18 per
acre. The number of contracts is higher
than the number of farms because produc-
ers may have multiple contracts on a single
farm.
This voluntary program helps agricul-
tural producers safeguard environmentally
sensitive land.
Producers enroll in CRP and plant long-
term, resource-conserving covers to im-
prove water quality, control soil erosion
and enhance habitats for waterfowl and
wildlife. In return, USDA provides produc-
ers with rental payments. CRP contract du-
ration is from 10 to 15 years.
Land to be enrolled must be either
highly erodible, contribute to a serious
water quality problem, provide important
wildlife habitat or provide substantial en-
vironmental benefits if devoted to certain
specific conservation uses.

USDA announces 2010 DCP and ACRE signup begins

Director of USDA's Farm Service Agency in
Florida today announced that enrollment
for the 2010 Direct and Counter-cyclical Pro-
gram (DCP) and the Average Crop Revenue
Election (ACRE) program has begun and
will continue through June 1, 2010.
"We at FSA urge producers to make use
of the eDCP automated website to sign up,"
said Folsom. "The electronic service saves
producers' time, reduces paperwork and
speeds up contract processing at their local
FSA offices."
Folsom adds eDCP is available to all pro-
ducers who are eligible to participate in the
DCP and ACRE Programs and can be ac-
cessed at www.fsa.usda.gov/dcp. To access
the service, producers must have an active
USDA eAuthentication Level 2 account,
which requires filling out an online registra-
tion form at www.eauth.egov.usda.gov fol-
lowed by a visit to the local USDA Service
Center for identity verification. For those
without internet access or if they prefer,
producers can also visit any USDA Service
Center to complete their 2010 DCP or ACRE
contract.
USDA computes DCP Program payments
using base acres and payment yields estab-
lished for each farm. Eligible producers re-
ceive direct payments at rates established by
statute regardless of market prices. For 2010,
eligible producers may request to receive
advance direct payments based on 22 per-
cent of the direct payment. USDA will issue
advance direct payments beginning Dec. 1,
2009. Counter-cyclical payment rates vary
depending on market prices. Counter-cycli-
cal payments are issued only when the effec-
tive price for a commodity is below its target
price. The effective price is the higher of the
national average market price received dur-
ing the 12-month marketing year for each
covered commodity and the national aver-
age loan rate for a marketing assistance loan
for the covered commodity.
The optional ACRE Program provides a
safety net based on state revenue losses and
acts in place of the price-based safety net
of counter-cyclical payments under DCP. A
farm's payment is based on a revenue guar-
antee calculated using a 5-year average state
yield and the most recent 2-year national
price for each eligible commodity. For the
2010 crop, the 2-year price average will be
based on the 2008 and 2009 crop years.
An ACRE payment is issued when both
the state and the farm have incurred a rev-
enue loss. The payment is based on 83.3
percent (85 percent in 2012) of the farm's
planted acres times the difference between
the State ACRE guarantee and the state
revenue times the ratio of the farm's yield
divided by the state expected yield. The
total number of planted acres for which a
producer may receive ACRE payments may
not exceed the total base on the farm. In ex-
change for participating in ACRE, in addition
to not receiving counter-cyclical payments,
a farm's direct payment is reduced by 20
percent, and marketing assistance loan rates
are reduced by 30 percent.
The decision to enroll in the ACRE Pro-
gram is irrevocable. The owner of the farm
and all producers on the farm must agree to
enroll in ACRE. Once enrolled, the farm shall
be enrolled for that initial crop year and will
remain in ACRE through the 2012 crop year.
The June 1, 2010, deadline is mandatory
for all participants. USDA will not accept any
late-filed applications.

Dora E Holloway, 78
CLEWISTON Dora F. Holloway, age 78, of
Clewiston passed away on Oct. 26, 2009, in
Hendry Regional Medical Center, Clewiston.
She was born on Oct. 20, 1931, in Arcadia, to
George Washington and Alma Coe ; I. I
Summeralls.
Survivors include two daughters, Diannie Arm-
strong, Clewiston, Collette (Mike) Scott, West
Palm Beach; two sons, Robert C. Holloway
(Monica Nickeson), Summerland Key, Joey
Scott (Vicki), Okeechobee; three granddaugh-
ters, Mindy (Bill) Brewster, Arkansas, Sara Arm-
strong, Clewiston, Shanna Holloway, West Palm
Beach; three grandsons, Kristopher (Wendy)
Holloway, Clewiston, Trey Armstrong, Clewis-
ton and Kyle Chamblee, West Palm Beach;
three great-grandchildren, Dagan and Darren
Holloway of Clewiston, and Cheyenne Brewster
of Arkansas; one brother, Charlie Summeralls
Bradenton; two sisters, Eva Sapp Clewiston and
Alma Mae Corington Rice West Palm Beach;
and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, in
Akin-Davis Funeral Home where visitation was
Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment
will be in Joshua Creek Cemetery in Arcadia.
Pastor John Hicks of the First United Methodist
Church of Clewiston officiated the funeral and
the graveside.
Robert Dale Fielder, 53
LABELLE -Robert Dale Fielder, age 53, of La-
Belle, passed away Oct. 24, 2009, in Tampa.
He was born Dec. 15, 1955, in Clewiston.
Survivors include his wife, Kimberly Jean
Yelgington Fielder of LaBelle; daughters, Lind-
sey Wiggins (Matt) of Clewiston, and Kim Field-
er of Clewiston; father, James A. Fielder
(Shirley) of Clewiston; mother, Betty Jean Field-
er of Clewiston; brother, Terrel Fielder (Nicole)
of Lakeport; sisters, Lizann Shaw (Donald) of
Clewiston and Lynn Briefman (Sam) of Clewis-
ton; nephews, Wayne and Michael; nieces,
Morgan and Michelle (A.J.); and great-nephew,
Christopher.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Oct.
30, at First Baptist Church of Clewiston with
Pastor Pedro Cabrera and Pastor Edward Green
officiating. Interment will follow in Ortona Ce-
metery, Moore Haven. Visitation will be today,
Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Akin-Davis Funeral
Home in Clewiston.

Purchase and Everglades Restoration remains strong
Floridians oppose new
industrial and residential
development in Everglades
Agricultural Area
The Everglades Foundation
Floridians are concerned about the sus-
tainability of drinking water supplies, flood
control protection and the protection of
wildlife, leading to near-universal support
for Everglades restoration as a course of ac-
tion to address the issue.
At the same time, in a recent survey
of registered voters conducted on behalf
of the Everglades Foundation, support
remains strong for the state's plan to pur-
chase 73,000 acres of land from US Sugar
for Everglades restoration. Results show
that 75 percent support the land acquisi-
tion, while 19 percent are opposed, with 6
percent unsure of their position.
This stems from Floridians' long-held
belief that the protection and restoration of
the River of Grass should be a high priority.
Fully 82 percent of the state's voters believe
that Everglades restoration is personally im-
portant to them. Support is strong across
all geographic areas of the state and in all
voter demographic groups.
As the Port of Palm Beach and the state
consider a site for an inland port, 78 percent
of voters support strict land-use controls in
the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) to
block any future commercial or residen-
tial development. The Port of Palm Beach
is expected to vote this week to choose
among four potential sites for the proposed
inland port. Only one of the sites sits within
the EAA.
"What's stunning about these results is
that, regardless of where they live or their
political affiliation, Floridians overwhelm-
ingly recognize the importance of Ever-
glades restoration to protect their water
supply," said Kirk Fordham, CEO of the
Everglades Foundation. "There is a reason
why candidates for public office, on a bi-
partisan basis, continue to focus their atten-
tion on this issue. Voters in this state have
a very strong connection to the Everglades
and cherish the benefits it provides to our
economy and quality of life."
The poll, conducted by the Orlando-
based Kitchens Group, was completed Sep-
tember 20-24, 2009. The telephone survey
interviewed a random sample of 600 likely
voters across the state. The margin of error
for this survey is +/- 4 percent.
Other Survey Findings:
Among the reasons why Florida vot-
ers feel it is important to restore the Ever-
glades:
82 percent think it is important to
combat the effects of climate change and
salt-water intrusion.
91 percent think it is important to pro-
tect recreational opportunities like fishing,
boating, camping and hiking for individuals
and families.
85 percent think it is important for pre-
venting urban sprawl and congestion.
92 percent think it is important to pro-
tect wildlife like the Florida panther and the
Southern bald eagle.
83 percent believe it is important for
providing flood-control protection.
93 percent believe it is important to
help save jobs in the tourism, boating and
fishing industries.
Data regarding party affiliation shows
that 40 percent of voters in the survey said
they were registered Republicans; 44 per-
cent indicated they were Democrats and 14
percent indicated their party affiliation as
"other."

Clewiston Tigers upset
by Green Dragons

The upstart
Green Dragons reg-
istered a District
2B-6 victory as they
pinned a 14-13 loss
on Clewiston, beat
ing the Tigers with
key plays and a stout
second half defensive effort.
The come from behind home victory re-
sulted in both teams having a 2-1 record in
district play, along with Dunbar and Island
Coast.
With four teams tied for first place, each
team really now controls their destiny in
terms of the playoffs.
The Tigers must beat LaBelle next week
and then Dunbar the following week to
claim the district title.
If they beat LaBelle and lose to Dunbar,
then the playoff fate of the Tigers as district
runner-up representative would depend on
how Lake Placid and Island Coast finish out
in their two remaining district contests.
Things looked promising for the Tigers
early as they took the opening kickoff and
scored on the second play from scrimmage
when senior tailback Chris Herring popped
up the middle, broke clear and raced for an
82 yard score.
Kicker Grant Polhill added the extra
point.
After an exchange of possessions, Lake
Placid drove to the Tiger 14 but a field goal
attempt by kicker Stephen Guelff was wide.
The Tigers couldn't advance the ball and
a short punt gave Lake Placid the ball at the
Tiger 32 with under two minutes left in the
opening period.
On the third snap, tailback Caleb Jones
scampered 18 yards for the score and
Guelff's conversion was good to knot the
score at 7-all.
Clewiston took the following kickoff at
their own 20 after a touchback kickoff and
put together a 9 play scoring drive.
Big plays on the drive were a 33-yard pass
from quarterback Andres Rios to fullback
Fred Washington and another 22-yard con-
nection with wideout Damion Smith.
Chris Herring got the final yard off tackle
for the touchdown.
The Tiger's extra point attempt was
blocked after a mishandle between the snap
and the hold resulted in a late kick.
But, the Tigers went to intermission with
a 13-7 lead.
The second half was mostly Green Drag-
ons as they shut down the Tiger offense.
Clewiston had a golden opportunity in
the third period when they too possession
on the Green Dragon 22 after a short punt.
They drove to the Lake Placid 8 before
defensive back Devontra Flemming picked
off a pass from Tiger quarterback Andres
Rios to kill the drive.
Putting the ball in play at their 23, Lake
Placid put together a 77-yard drive on 12
plays to score with 8:47 left in the game.
Junior quarterback Kirk Veley scored on
a one-yard sneak and Guelff nailed the extra
point to provide the margin of victory.
Tiger coach Joe Roth was disappointed
in his team's effort saying, "We just beat our-
selves tonight on play after play. Now, we've
made it very difficult to compete for a post
season berth."
Clewiston fell to 2-5 overall and the Green
Dragons improved to 4-3 on the season.
Offensively, Herring led all rushers with
172 yards on 21 carries and his two touch-
downs.
But, the telling difference on the night was
the fact that Lake Placid held the Tigers to 50
yards of total offense in the second half.
Defensively, lineman LaMarcus Thicklin,
linebacker Dillon Irey and cornerback Da-
mion Smith each had 6 solo tackles.

Walk in the Past: A scene of Withlacoochee's wounded

On Dec. 28, 1835, Indian agent Thomp-
son and five other Americans were killed by
Seminoles in surprise ambushes outside the
walls of Fort Brooke. In retaliation, General
Clinch marched an army from Fort Drane on
Dec. 29, 1835 to the Seminole nation's heart-
land. The army consisted of 560 mounted
Florida militia and 250 army regulars.
General Clinch wasn't aware that Major
Francis Dade's column (108 men) had previ-
ously marched from Fort Brooke to reinforce
Fort King and was practically annihilated on
Dec. 28, 1835, the same day Indian agent
Thompson and five other persons were
ambushed. Knowledge of Dade's Massacre
would probably have prompted General
Clinch not to march on the Seminoles, until
a better assessment could be made of the
Seminole nation's military strength.
Clinch was hoping to surprise the Semi-
noles, but failed to do so because of poor
military decisions and the mere fact that the
Seminoles had been watching his army's
cumbersome progress, since the day it
marched from Fort Drane. The Seminoles in
turn hoped to ambush the American forces
and had chosen an excellent place along the
banks of the Withlacoochee River where
Clinch's command could easily ford the
river. This crossing would render the Ameri-
cans forces exposed and vulnerable to the
concealed Seminole's withering fire.
General Clinch's scouts missed the fa-
vorable river ford and crossed the With-
lacoochee River with 250 army regulars at
another location, using an ole

man was brought on a blanket stretched
across two pine saplings and carried by two
horses. In this mode they brought about 50
fellows who were dangerously wounded."
The arrival of the wounded soldiers put
Bembrose and his medical staff to work im-
mediately, caring for their wounded com-
rades. Bemrose describes the arrival of the
wounded, "Now came my tug of war, being
full of work and giving orders to my atten-
dants to have coffee made in such quantities
as to give to each of the wounded a tin cup
full of this useful beverage. We got our wag-
ons filled with the wounded; the more dan-
gerously wounded were slung in hammocks
between horses. Two or three officers that
were critical cases were carried on litters by
fresh relays of eight men detailed from the
battalion every quarter of a mile. Thus we
progressed 45 miles through this dangerous
and difficult country."
The Battle of Withlacoochee was called
a victory by the American forces because
they had repulsed the Seminole attackers.
In reality, the battle achieved no real military
objectives and proved to be more of a test-
ing ground for the American and Seminole
combatants.
Unknowing to General Clinch, the com-
mander of West Florida, General Gaines,
had received news of the Dade Massacre and
acted promptly. He immediately started pre-
paring his army stationed at New Orleans for
deployment. General Gaines arrived at Fort
Brookes (Tampa Bay area) with 1,100 men
on Feb. 10, 1836 and took to the field Feb.

13, 1836. Seventy friendly Indians acted as
guides for General Gaine's army as it made
its way to Fort Brooke.
General Gaine's army had marched cau-
tiously for eight days before it came upon
Major Dade's silent army of cadavers, who
lay as they had fallen, since that fateful day,
Dec. 28, 1835. Captain E. A. Hitchcock was
required to make a report and writes a grisly
story.
"We first saw some broken and scattered
boxes; then a cart, the two oxen of which
were lying dead, as if they had fallen asleep,
their yokes still on them; a little to the right
one or two horses were seen. We then came
to a small enclosure, made by felling trees
in such a manner as to form a triangular
breastwork for defense. Within the triangle,
along the north and west faces of it were
about thirty bodies, mostly mere skeletons,
although much of the clothing was left upon
them. These were lying almost every one of
them, in precisely the same position they
must have occupied during the fight, their
heads next to the logs over which they had
delivered their fire, and their bodies stretched
with striking regularity parallel to each other.
They had evidently been shot dead at their
posts, and the Indians had not disturbed
them, except by taking the scalps of most of
them. Advancing about two hundred yards
further, we found a cluster of bodies in the
middle of the road. These were evidently the
advanced guard, in the rear of which was
the body of Major Dade; and to the right, that
of Captain Frasier."
The prophetic words spoken months
before by an angry Osceola to Indian agent
Thompson bore a haunting truth that eerily
foretold the demise of Major Dade and his
men.
In an exchange of angry words, Osceola
was reported to have said, "Am I a Negro, a
slave? My skin is dark, but not black. I am an
Indian -a Seminole. The white man shall
not make me black. I will make the white
man red with blood; and then blacken him
in the sun and rain, where the wolf shall
smell of his bones, and the buzzard live
upon his flesh."

The Florida Department of Transportation, District One, will conduct an alternatives
public workshop on the proposed improvements to State Road (S.R.) 29 in Hendry
and Glades Counties, Florida. The meeting will be held in an open house format on
Thursday, November 5, 2009, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, at the LaBelle Civic Center,
481 Highway 80 West (behind City Hall) in LaBelle, Florida. If severe weather or other
unforeseen conditions cause the workshop to be postponed, it will be held on the alternate
* date of December 3, 2009. The proposed improvement involves adding two lanes to the
existing S.R. 29 from County Road (C.R.) 80A (Cowboy Way) to U.S. 27. The study is also
evaluating alternatives east of LaBelle.

Halloween Carnival
Moore Haven Elementary and Moore Ha-
ven Jr.Sr. High is having a Halloween Car-
nival Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the
Moore Haven City Park. Different school
organization will be selling hot dogs, chili,
cheese fries, candy and caramel apples,
tostadas, and baked goods. There will also
be games, a dunkin booth, giant slide, face
painting and a cake walk. At 6 p.m. a Hal-
loween Costume Contest will be held for the
categories: most original, most prettiest and
scariest. The cost is $1 per entry. Prizes will
be awarded. Please no bills over $5, most
food and games are .50 cent and up. Come
out and support your schools organizations.

ty's newest hospital, welcomed
its first baby born at The Birth-
place just hours after opening to
patients. Sharmeka Canty named
her baby girl Shaniya Canty, who
weighed 71bs, 2 oz. Little Shaniya
was born at 9:15 a.m. on October
15, four hours after the hospital
had opened its doors to the pub-
lic.
Ms. Canty was happy to be the
first mom to deliver at the new
technologically-advanced hospital,
which boasts six private labor and
delivery rooms, 10 private post
partum rooms and a large nursery
that features constant, profession-
al care by The Birthplace nursing
staff. The medical staff celebrated Sherid
this milestone of the first baby OB/G'
born at Lakeside Medical Center Canty
by presenting Ms. Canty with a gift
basket. Little Shaniya is Ms. Canty's
second child. Shaniya was delivered by Sher-
ida Williams, MD, who is a practicing phy-
sician at Lakeside Medical Center OB/GYN,
currently located in the Glades Medical Pla-

non-profit Lighthouse Cafe.
This event is to raise funds to feed those
in need a hot nourishing meal Monday

Halloween A time to laugh
at evil?

At Halloween people dress up as Devils,
Ghosts, Witches, Skeletons and other weird
costumes and spends hours setting up
"Spook Houses."
America finds sin hilariously funny! We
are not the first to do so.
Babylon saw it that way, and the hand-
writing came on the wall.
Rome saw it that way and faded from
power.
France followed suit and the moral decay
became a cancer.
Now America laughs at sin, laughs hilari-
ously.
America is laughing itself into hell! Every-
where you go billboards shout at you "hilari-
ous funniest comedy of the year."
On T.V and radio, in the movie and news-
papers, we see people knocking themselves
out trying to entertain us.
They seem to feel that if America would
only collapse in a paroxysm of myrth all our
problems would cease. Frankly, I don't feel
like laughing.
I can see ideals and standards and heri-
tage dying dying before our very eyes. And
the church has failed to speak out against it?
Why?
Because many of the preachers and lead-
ers are not in the business of warning and
rebuking the evils of our day.
In the night club a half-naked woman
comes out, goes through some contortions
and tells a filthy joke.
A wild orgie of raucous laughter rocks
the room. Around a table men and women
sit, their drinks before them. They have been
there a long time.
One man rises to his feet, extends the
glass and proposes an obscene toast, laud
guffaws fill the room and they all stager to
their feet for the toasts.
At a Washington cocktail party in the
corner of the room some of the top Gov-
ernment officials stand, with glasses in their
hands, planning our war strategy Around
them practically drowning out their conver-
sation is the hollow laughter of men and the
shrill crackling of the sophisticates.
A man tells of having lost his shirt at the
races. He makes it sound funny and the lis-
teners laugh. Two man stand on the corner
talking, "She's quite a gal," says one and
winks, they both laugh. A drunk staggers
down the exit at the football game, shouting
and singing. We laugh.
What's so funny? Is sin funny? Are shady
business deals and drinking leaders and
open gambling open to mirth?
Are filthy stories, jokes. the devil, witch-
es and immorality causes of hilarity? Are
preachers who tell suggestive stories one
after another, funny?
Why laugh when the moral fiber of a na-
tion is being wretched apart by godlessness.
There is an absolute absence of heartfelt sor-
row for sins in our country.
We need a real recognition of sins and
a genuine sorrow for it and an honest turn-
ing away from it, if we are to survive. Some
laugh at their absence from church on the
Lord's Day as being nothing serious. The
Bible calls this a "willful sin."
What's so funny? Wake Up! Judgment is
coming!
When "You're it" A modern

It isn't only in the game of "tag" that
somebody will say "You're it!"
I have found in ministry that every once
and awhile, I'm called upon to do some-
thing that was never before thought about
or planned.
I spent a morning hanging out of an air-
plane -nothing between me and the ground
but the seatbelt -taking pictures of a mis-
sion site.
There have been calls involving firearms
and desperate people, late-night calls that
have had little to do directly theology, learn-
ing to match wits with panhandlers and yet
not becoming cynical, building a church
with a non-existent budget, learning to
speak -and think -in a totally strange con-
text; learning to do it all because I was "it."
My life and ministry hasn't been as chal-
lenging as that shared by Saint Paul (2 Cor-
inthians 11:23ff) when he catalogs all of the
things that have happened to him in his min-
istry; things never taught in school or how-to
books.
God takes us places where suddenly we
find ourselves as the only person available
and calls us to act in His name.
I was able to partially understand what
Captain Chesley Sullenberger meant when
he said that his recent miracle on the Hud-
son River was the culmination of all of his
years of training and experience.
His abilities came from long hours in
flight simulators, check-rides, practice drills,
reading, learning about his aircraft, and be-
ing the kind of person that enables him to be
"it" when the pressure is on.
I remember one day when a lady the
Church I was serving said to me "You're it!"
People in an isolated area where I was living
had few people they could call upon, few
who might offer help; and I was left with the
inadequacies and questions about what all I
might offer or be able to do.
Many times, I too felt that my ministry
was the culmination of all of the experi-
ences and training that had gone on before;
and I was suddenly the one. Prayer and trust
formed a foundation; God gives the strength
and the courage and we are promised that
"God is faithful; He will not let you be tempt-
ed beyond what you can bear, but when you
are tempted, He will also provide a way out
so you can stand up under it (1 Corinthians
10:13)."
I've found that this doesn't only apply to
our ministries; but the lives of all that I have
encountered who have passed through the
tests and temptations life has brought them.
Ministry, both by the clergy and all of the
laypersons of faith, is bringing to bear all of
the gifts that God has given us throughout
our lives; knowing that He is with us even
when things seem beyond our abilities and
when there is nobody else.
Now and again I'm reminded that "You're
it," challenges met in the past and giving
strength to face the next one that comes our
way.
We never know the impact we might
have on others. A Sunday school teacher led
a Boston shoe clerk to Christ.
You've probably never heard the name of
the teacher: Kimball. But you probably have
heard of the shoe clerk he brought to Jesus:
Dwight Moody.
It doesn't stop there. As an evangelist,
Moody had a great spiritual influence on F.
B. Meyer. Meyer preached on college cam-
puses across the nation, and God used him
to reach the heart of J. Wilbur Chapman.
Chapman, a leader in the YMCA, brought
Billy Sunday, the famous baseball legend, in
for a revival in Charlotte.
The response from the community was
so enthusiastic, that they planned another
event led by Mordecai Hamm. In response
to Hamm's invitation, a kid from a dairy
farm made his decision to follow Christ. His
name: Billy Graham.
Think of the millions of lives that were
touched because of the witness of one Sun-
day school teacher.
The same could happen with us. There's
no telling what the impact of something we
do or share could have in the life of some-
one.
The truth is, everything we do or say has
a potential impact, but there are times in our
lives when we have opportunities to reach
out and touch people in a special way. Hal-
loween can be one such opportunity.
There was a man in the neighborhood
where I grew up who made snow cones ev-
ery Halloween for all of us trick-or-treaters.
I remember him. More than that, I re-
member how special he made each of us
feel. It inspired within me a desire to one
day, if at all possible, to do what he did -to
make and hand out snow cones on Hallow-
een -to make good memories by touching
the hearts of children and youth in special
ways.
God blessed me with the gift of a ma-
chine, and if you come by First United
Methodist Church on Halloween night, you
will find pumpkins carved in special ways,
bowls of the best candy, and yes, my snow
cone machine running and the light of Christ
shining.
You never know how God will use your
witness to touch the life of another or how
many will be touched because of one per-
son you touched.
With Halloween coming up, let me close
by suggesting that being a Christians is a lot
like being a pumpkin.
God picks you from the patch, brings you
in, and washes all the dirt off of you. God

Public hearing focused on pig farm operation
Request for zone change

GLADES COUNTY -- County commission-
ers convened on Oct. 26 and listened to tes-
timony during a public hearing for a request
to changing three acres from Industrial to
Open Use Agriculture. The parcel at 29513
US Highway 27 is in east Glades County
near the Hendry County line. It is adjacent to
Mandy Auto Sales, and a few miles from the
City of Moore Haven.
According to agenda case documents, the
applicant, Alberto Garcia of A.C.L. Group,
Inc., encountered a code violation when he
began a pig farm operation in an Industrial
Zone. Mr. Garcia then submitted an applica-
tion to rezone the property.
Janet Gonzalez, adjacent property own-
er, explained her family moved to Glades
County to raise their children away from the
city. She and her husband, Mandy, also oper-
ate an auto sales and palm tree business on
the property. Ms. Gonzalez commented they
cannot hold outdoor family activities due to
the smell, and customers are offended when
they try to conduct business there. She gave
photos of rotten pig carcasses to the com-
missioners.
Tom Perry, engineer, represented the
Gonzalez's, and mentioned the operation
was not consistent and not compatible with
existing land use patterns. He explained that
the applicant had left dead pigs in the back
of the property.
Another witness, Alvin Ward, owns prop-
erty adjacent to the applicant. He was ada-
mantly opposed to a zone change.
"If you grant this, and he does go up to
5,000 pigs, you cannot regulate the waste,"
Mr. Ward said.
Alberto Garcia, applicant, explained that
he was unable to remove dead pigs imme-
diately because his excavation equipment
was broken down and it took time to get
repaired. He generally referred to various
water, health, agriculture and environment
agencies that did not find violations.
"Every agency has been out there and
has not put a violation on me. I have a right
to have a business," said Mr. Garcia.
Robert Giesler, commissioner, comment-
ed that the applicant knew it was zoned
industrial when he bought it, and changing
the zone to agriculture lowers Mr. Garcia's
property taxes.
"When you first put pigs on it you knew it
was a violation," Robert Giesler said.
Commissioner Donna Storter Long re-
marked that his application did not mention
he was in violation. Butch Jones, commis-
sioner was concerned about the canal next
to the pig operation; and he was worried
that the rezoning could open a Pandora's
Box of multiple problems. Paul Beck, com-
missioner, commented about concerns of
possible lawsuits
Chairman, Russell Echols, questioned
the act of rewarding the applicant with a
zone change after he received a code viola-
tion. The board of county commissioners
decided to continue this public hearing at
the next county meeting on Nov. 10 at 9 a.m.
Until then, the applicant has time to comply
with code enforcement.

Biologists ask anglers to report tagged largemouth bass
Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wild-
life Conservation Commission's (FWC)
Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and the
University of Florida need assistance with a
statewide largemouth bass research study.
This year-long project is an interactive
way for the public to help biologists obtain
critical information necessary to manage
the largemouth bass fishery for quality and
trophy-sized fish.
From this study, biologists hope to learn
how frequently bass are caught and harvest-
ed. They also hope to learn more about the
size range of fish caught.
Beginning this month, biologists are tag-
ging largemouth bass with small, yellow
tags along the back of the fish just below the
dorsal fin.
These tags carry a printed telephone num-
ber, e-mail address, tag number and reward
value. Anglers should carefully examine all
bass caught in Florida lakes for reward tags,
as biologists will tag fish in numerous lakes
throughout the state.
Biologists encourage anglers to remove
these tags by cutting them as close to the
fish as possible and then treat the fish as
they would normally.
Once anglers remove a tag, they should
immediately report it to the FWC Angler Tag
Return Hotline at 800-367-4461 or e-mail Ta-
gReturn@MyFWC.com.
Anglers participating in the study will re-
ceive a reward for each largemouth bass tag
they return to the FWC.
When reporting the tag, anglers should
provide the following information: the spe-
cies of fish, tag number, fish length, date
and time of capture, name of the lake where
the fish was caught, and whether the angler
kept or released the fish.

Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission,

GLADES COUNTY -- Angelica Pena, To-
bacco Prevention Specialist Glades County
Health Department, reported that secondary
students in SWAT (Students Working Against
Tobacco) have given presentations to young-
er children at county schools in regards to
the dangers of tobacco use. The successful
awareness program held a creative artwork
project that was judged by SWAT teens.
Elementary and middle school teachers
were asked to let students participate in the
poster artwork that will tell, in their own
words, the harmful effects of using tobacco
products. The project is titled "Tell Us What
You Know About Tobacco". Students could
write a poem, draw a story or make a col-
lage. The focus was on cigarettes, chew or
dip tobacco, and second hand smoke. An-
gelica Pena commented it was a challenging
task because there were many posters that
were very creative.
"Some delivered a great message about
the dangers of tobacco and others conveyed
a really deep feeling about their personal
experience with a family member who uses
tobacco products," Ms. Pena said.
The artwork selected by SWAT was dis-
played in the Homecoming Parade, Oct. 15.
Two students from each grade will be se-
lected to help share information about the
harmful effects of using tobacco.

Trunks and Tricks Contest and Hallow-
een party will be held at the Lakeport Com-
munity Center on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 4
p.m. to 6 p.m. This is a yearly event for all
the kids and their families to look forward
to, the community center will be decorated
spookily and we will be serving chili and hot-
dogs and soft drinks at a reasonably goulish
charge. There will be all kinds of fun things
planned so bring the kids and have a family
evening at the Lakeport Community Center.

Thanksgiving at the City
park
Admission is free to anyone at the Moore
Haven city park at Avenue J and Riverside
Drive on Nov. 14 from 2-5 p.m. There will be
FREE hamburgers, hotdogs, chili, soda, tea,
and water. Four bands will play and there will
be lots of games for kids, a bounce house,
and prizes including bicycles, gift cards.
Families will also see face painting, cotton
candy and popcorn. Dinner is organized
and provided by Living Waters Fellowship in
Moore Haven. In these hard economic times
we need to provide some activities for fami-
lies to gather together and just have some
good clean fun. Come see us Nov. 14.
Tobacco Free Classes
Approximately 88 Floridians die every
day from Tobacco related illnesses. And with
the money spent yearly to purchase tobacco
products one can save and take a vacation,
buy a new wardrobe, buy a car, and other
nice things we only think about. Help is
available. Classes in Moore Haven to help
you quit using tobacco will start in October.
