A farm laborer, who had been
mowing in planted pines off US 129,
was inspecting a series of sink holes
when he slipped and fell, plummet-
ing 25 to 30 feet.
Blake Riels, 19, of Branford was
working between SW 15th Street and
SW 20th Street on Thursday, Dec. 18
when he fell into the sink hole. Riels
was noticed missing by another farm
laborer who began a search effort.
Riels was believed to have been
trapped at the bottom of the sink
hole for about an hour before he was
found.
Gilchrist County Emergency Ser-
vices was notified, and fire and EMS
personnel were dispatched to the
scene. Being certified in rope rescue,
Captain Billy Careccia took com-
mand upon arrival. After observ-
ing the situation, Careccia notified
Captain Mark James of the Fanning
Springs Fire Department who is also
certified in urban search and rescue.
James arrived on scene with the ap-
propriate equipment and repelled
into the sink hole where he assessed
the patient for injuries.
According to James, the man ap-
peared to have a broken ankle and
possibly several fractured ribs.
Alachua County Station 16 was no-
tified, and they dispatched their urban
search and rescue team when it was
determined that the patient would
have to be lifted out of the hole..
Riels was ultimately rescued from
the sink hole. He sustained minor in-
juries in the accident. -
Blake Riels was lifted out of a sink hole by rescue workers after he plummeted some 25 to 30 feet.

Fly-in draws helicopter enthusiasts
By Carrie A. Mizell
Jim Little of Baton Rouge, Lou-
siana flew his single seat helicopter
540 miles over the weekend to attend'
Composite FX's 2nd annual factory
fly-in.
According to Dwight Junkin, Com-
posite FX owner, the factory fly-in
drew nearly 600 people to the ultra-
light helicopter plant, which is locat-
ed on County Road 319 in Trenton.
"The fly in is open to all brands of
helicopters," Junkin said. "We're just
trying to promote the sport."
Not only does the three day event
draw a large number of helicopter en-
thusiasts from throughout the United
States, it also entices locals who park
their vehicles in a field just north of
the factory, drop their tailgates and
pull out lawn chairs to sit and watch
the excitement of helicopters taking
off and landing. A man parachuting
from a helicopter was a new attrac-
tion at this' year's fly-in. According to
Junkin, the helicopter enthusiast trav-
eled up from Dade City with friends
and enjoyed jumping from the heli-
'copter some 3500 feet much to the
delight of local spectators
Other helicopters that touched
down for the event included privately
owned helicopters, a Gainesville
Police Department helicopter and a
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conserva-
tion Commission helicopter. Two
flight instructors also brought their
helicopters and offered rides to any-
one interested in going up.
On Saturday evening, several of
the helicopter owners gathered in the
field toplay music and take part in an
old fashioned "ho down" as Junkin
put it.
Junkin said he is already mak-
ing plans for the 2009 factory fly-
in, which will once again be held
between Christmas and New Year's
because that is when people are off
work and have the time to fly-in to
Gilchrist County.

Generator installed at BHS for special needs shelter
A new 2000-kilowatt generator,
capable of operating the entire school
during a power outage, has been in-
stalled at Bell High School.
A partnership project by the Flor-
ida Division of Emergency Manage-
ment and the Gilchrist County School
Board, the generator installation was
initiated to support special needs
sheltering efforts should an emer-
gency occur, explained Ron Mills,
chief of Gilchrist County Emergency
Management.
The state supplied the generator
and covered all costs associated with
installation, which exceeded $1 mil-
lion.

erations, with the Gilchrist County

John's Comments
By John M. Ayers
By the time this first edition of
2009 lands on the newsstands, 2008
for all practical purposes will be his-
tory. In looking back on this historic
year, should the residents of Gilchrist
have faith that 2009 will be an im-
provement over 2008 or will 'we have
to accept the fact that things are just
going to be unresolved?
It seems that stretching the tax dol-
lar to provide county services for law
enforcement, transportation and other
propriety needs will become a prior-
ity issue of importance after January
1,2009.
The outcry for more responsive
law enforcement has become the pri-
ority for the public as Sheriff Daniel
Slaughter works out the details in
his administration. At this point in
time, the Sheriff-elect will wait until
Sheriff David Turner is no longer the
Sheriff, before he makes' his admin-
istration and sheriff offices appoint-
ments known to the public.
In 2008 Gilchrist County and many
residents that live in this rural area
became aware of the issues involv-
ing growing pains that have now
caught up with us. All of Gilchrist
County experienced more burglaries,
home robberies, and violent crime in
2008 than I can ever remember in the
past. When I talk with people about
how they feel about the rising rate
of crime in our county, many people
say that they are in hopes that the
new sheriff can put things in proper
perspective and we can return to
Gilchrist County as it once was and
not be worried about having to pro-
tect ourselves against burglaries 'and
home robberies.
I feel Gilchrist County has to join
with the Sheriff's office and be more
observant of what is going on around
us, in our residential and business ar-
eas. Make the Sheriff's office aware
if there are problems and be a part of
the solution to help the patrol depu-
ties do a better job for all of us.
Let us look forward to 2009 with
respect that our local leaders, state
elected officials, and our congress in
Washington, D.C. will be responsible
to the people and do what is right to
get this great country back on her feet.
We will be praying for all of them.

As 2009 approaches, I find my-
self trying all kinds of new things ...
Over the last few months I've taken
to staying up all night, drinking, and
even talking to strangers on the Inter-
net.
Before my grandmother throws
down her paper, and calls me up in
an effort to straighten me out, I better
explain.
My new baby is keeping me up all
hours of the night! Therefore I resolve
to continue paying way too much for
overpriced concealer in 2009 because
it truly IS miracle cream.
I also plan to.continue drinking ...
fruit, punch that is! I need it to keep
me functioning all night. I don't drink
coffee because it would be bad for.
the baby ... Now I know what you're
thinking, like all that sugar in fruit
punch is good for her?! Relax, I've
considered it and decided that fruit
punch (with fresh fruit I've chopped
up in it to make it "healthy") has to
be the lesser of two evils.
As for the talking to strangers onr
the Internet ... I confess I've started,
up my own blog, which is pretty
funny when you consider that I know
little to nothing about technology.
I don't have an Iphone, or an Ipod,
or any other popular "I." I've never
socialized on Facebook, or even the
highly acclaimed MySpace.
It all started during my last semes-
ter at UNF when I had to post mes-
sages to a blog as part of an assign-
ment.' Having never written a blog
before, I googled blogs and started
reading what others had to say. I fell
in love immediately and -have since
been addicted to reading about other
people's daily lives.
I know what you're probably
thinking ... my husband thinks I'm
nuts too, especially when I tell him
about what Meme, an interior deco-
rator in Texas, had to say about hang-
ing antique china on one's wall, or
how cute Katie's little girl Amelia
is in her Christmas pictures. He just
stares at me and says, "Baby, these
people are hot your friends'... their
strangers!" Of course I know that,
but these Southern girls and I have
shared interests;.therefore, we have a
lot to blog about!
Adam maintains that I need to
get out in Callahan and meet some
people, but I just say I'm doing re-
search.
.You see. I'm learning through post-
ing to m) blog how I want to set up
the Gilchrist County Journal's web-
site, which will be launched in early
2009. We'll keep. you posted on the
progress, but in the meantime resolve
to try something new and out of char-
acter in 2009!

Now don't spill your eggnog but
Wall Street is still the place to be if
you want to increase your wealth.
Additionally, there is no "good

the quality of the companies that you

of success.
Furthermore, anyone can
successfully invest in stocks without

instantaneous gratification, grounded
in the idea of buying on credit, the
discipline of saving and investing has
never been as important as it is now.
For example, you cannot do better

relevant. What is important is that you
request the actual stock certificate,

A New Year Is An Old Refrain
(Kent Heaton)
It was on the fourth day of creation (Genesis 1:14-19)
that God placed lights in the firmament of the heavens to
divide the day'from the night; and to serve as signs and
seasons, and for days and years. The sun would rule in the
day and the moon would rule in the night. The design of
the heavenly bodies was to give light on the earth and to
divide the light from the darkness. "And God saw that it
was good."
Our world is not two thousand and nine years old. It is
much older and no one knows the exact age of the .earth.
As we pass the milestone of 2009 'we reflect upon the
creation of time and the impact on man. The world is ruled
by days and nights that have been established in a period
of time since creation. "In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1) declares that man
lives in an envelope of time. Creation itself is divided into,
six days with the Lord resting on the seventh day. The
garden where man first lived had a "tree of life" (Genesis
2:9) that would sustain the years of man's existence
forever. Following the rebellion of man in Genesis 3 the
Lord God drove man from the garden "lest he put out his
hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live
forever" (Genesis 3:22).
Moses writes of Adam living 930 years and his son
Seth living 912 years (Genesis 5:5,6). The oldest man in
the Bible is recorded as Methuselah at the age of 969
years (Genesis 5:27). Throughout the pages of scripture
the Holy Spirit impresses upon the pages of time the years
of man's fleeting years. Life has been measured by the
ruler of time since the beginning and how many new years
have passed is known only to the Creator. The reality of
life is that while we acknowledge a new year it is only an
old reminder of the ages past where, men have walked
Time is a fleeting vapor that "appears for a little time
and then vanishes away" (James 4:14). The marking of
transition between years 'serves as a reminder that we are
mortal beings governed by the clock of time ever winding
down' toward a final end. Reflections are made from this
past year of those whom we knew and loved that died. In
that somber reflection we acknowledge that time has
passed for that person: Man has a beginning and man has
an end. There is no new year for them. Even if we were
able to live as long as Methuselah we would find the same
fate he found at the age of 969: "and he died." Should this
make us despondent or should this make us aware of our
mortality?
The celebration of a new year should be a time of joy to
share with one another in the blessing of God's grace.
Cognitive of this fact should cause us to think soberly
upon the decisions that we made last year and the
decisions we shall makethis year. Moses declared in
Psalm 90, "So teach us to number our days that we may
gain a heart of wisdom" (vl2). We should number our
days in the celebration of our years. The decisions made
last year will find fruit in the plans we will seek in the
coming year to be more keenly aware of our lives before
an eternal God.
The Preacher of Ecclesiastes declared, "Let us hear the
conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God, and keep His
commandments for this is the whole of man. For God
shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret
thing, whether it is good, or whether evil" (Ecclesiastes
12:13-14). Happy New Year in the year of our Lord 2009.
May the blessing of God's Son be our guiding light in this

Besides, how many pictures can your

increase in value?
For those family members who
claim to be too old for the Mouse
and crave a more exciting life, there
are companies that most teenagers
will not only recognize, but will
likely rise their acdenaline level. For
example, Microsoft, Adobe, Intel,
Cisco and Hewlett-Packard are but a
few.
If video games are more to their
liking then there are names such as
Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive
Software andTHQ. Theses companies-
have not done % ell recently but your
kids should know that better than \ ou.
An enterprising teenager might even
uncover a lesser known name that is
ready to outperform its brethren.
So how do you go about setting up
an, account for your soon-to-be Wall
Street prodigy? For a teenager, the
shares should be in a deep discount
brokerage account that can be viewed
on demand via the Internet, while still
maintaining whatever supervision
and restriction on both trading and
the withdrawal of funds that you
deem necessary.
Ideally, you want to instill the idea
of investing as opposed" to trading.
However, if your budding analyst
can make a case for moving out of
one stock and into another, go along
with the idea. Learning should take
precedence over possible returns.
Finally, let your young investor
go it alone. Try out your ideas on
your portfolio. The more a young
person can learn about investing
and investment research, the greater
the likelihood that they will be able
to establish themselves on a sound
financial footing in their adult life.

As 2008 comes to an end I realize
once again that time rolls on and there
is no stopping it. Just last week my
mother lost one of her oldest friends,
Marie Mims Griffin.
Aunt Marie (not really my aunt)
was a wonderful person. I would de-
scribe her as a "salt of the earth" type
person.
She and Momma were big mem-
bers of the Curryville Homemakers
Club for over fifty years. They were
both homemakers in the truest sense
of the word..
Growing up I often found myself in'
the company of Aunt Marie because
she and Momma did a lot of things
together. They picked wild blackber-
ries in the summer together and made
jelly; sometimes they picked peas to-
gether and attended the Homemakers
club meetings. You just never knew
what those Homemakers were up to.
I believe they looked.forward to their
.workshops most of all. Many years
ago they all collected treadle sewing
machine bases and made broken tile
tops for them. Voila, a new table was
born. I remember handmade baskets
and hand hammered aluminum trays.
Those ladies could make anything.
They also learned new sewing tech-
niques or safer canning methods. Al-
ways something to make them a bet-
ter housewife and mother.
It sounds kind of antiquated in 2008
to strive to be a better "housewife-or
homemaker." I guess that being a
homemaker is not PC these days, but
that is truly what they wvere.
My Momma and Aunt Marie todk

Miss Parnie or Miss Allie Mae had a

Aunt Marie served the community
and its children as our 4-H leader.

Aunt Marie's entire life was cen-
tered around her husband and sons.
She and my Momma shared a friend-
ship built by many, many years of
sharing a simple life on the farm. In
the past years they both lost their hus-
bands. At that time they began calling
each other nightly to just "Check on
each other."
I have to laugh when I think that
just last Spring Momma and Aunt
Marie did their best to out garden
each other. Their nightly calls took
on a new tempo as they reported to
each other how many tomatoes they
had picked that day.
What an important part of life true
friendship is....even in her 80's Aunt
Marie was still giving a demonstra-
tion. She demonstrated to those who
looked closely that there is still a
place in our fast paced world for a
simple honest life as a homemaker
and true friend.

Additional Homestead Exemption
How does the "double homestead" work?
The existing homestead exemption typically reduces the assessed value
of a property used as a primary residence by a Florida resident by
$25,000. This would provide an additional homestead exemption up to
$25,000, on the assessed value between $50,000 and $75,000.
For example, if your assessment is $65,000, the first $25,000 and that
portion above $50,000 ($15,000) would be exempt, making your taxable
value $25,000 (65,000-25,000-15,000). Prior to new law, the taxable
value would have been $40,000 (65,000-25,000).
This additional homestead exemption does NOT reduce the assessed
value upon which school taxes are based. Also, It does not reduce or
otherwise affect the "Save Our Homes" deduction or any other exemp-
tions. It is not necessary to file for this additional exemption If you, have
the Homestead Exemption already.

- TANGIBLE PERSONAL PROPERTY
INFORMATION
This form answers some common questions taxpayers have concerning Tangible
Personal Property. In addition, it provides information that will help you file an accurate
and timely tax return.
Questions Most Frequently Asked About Tangible Personal Property
Q. What is Tangible Personal Property?
A. Tangible Personal Property is everything other than real
estate that has value by itself. It wodild include things such as
furniture, fixtures, tools, machinery, household ,appliances,
signs, equipment, leasehold improvements, supplies, leased
equipment and any other equipment used in a business or to earn
income.
Q. Who must file?
A. Anyone in possession of assets on January 1 who has either
a proprietorship, partnership, corporation or is a self-employed
agent or contractor, must file each year. Property owners who
lease, lend or rent property must also file.
Q. Why must I file a return?
A. Florida Statutes 193.052 requires that all tangible personal
property be reported each year to the Property Appraiser's
office. If you receive a return, it's because our office has
determined that you may have property to report. If you feel the
form is not applicable, return it with an explanation. Either way,
the form MUST be returned. Failure to receive a Personal
Property Tax Return (DR-405) does not relieve you of your
obligation to file.
Q. How can I obtain this form?
A. At tile beginning of the year a return is mailed to Tangible
Personal Property owners. If you do not get one, contact the
Property Appraiser's Office.
Q. What if I have no assets to report? Do I still have to file a
return?
A. Yes, if you feel you do not have anything to report, fill out
items I through 9 on thile return, and attach an explanation of
why nothing was reported. However, almost all businesses and
rental units have some assets to report even if it is only supplies.
rented equipment or household goods.
Q. If I am no longer in business, should I still file the return?
A. Yes, if you were not in business on January I of the taxing
year, follow this procedure:
1) On your return, indicate the date you went out of business and
tile manner in which you disposed of your business assets.
Remember if you still have tile assets, you must file on them.
2) Sign and date the return.
3) Have your signature notarized.
4) Mail the return back to this office.
Q. What is an office or field review assessment?
A. When a tax return is not filed by April I we are required to
place an assessment on the property. This assessment represents
an estimate based on the value of business with similar
equipment and assets. Being assessed does not alleviate your
responsibility to file an accurate return.
Q. What if I don't agree with the assessed value that appears on
the notice of proposed property taxes that I receive in
August of each year?
A. Call this office or come in and discuss the matter with us. If
you have evidence that the appraised value is more than the
actual fair market value of your property, we will welcome the
opportunity to review all the pertinent facts.
$25,000 Tangible Personal
Property Exemption
In order to receive this new exemption, you must
file a Tangible Personal Property Return by April
1, unless an exemption has been granted.
-Tangible Property Return shall be considered an
application for the exemption and will be applied
to the first $25.000 of assessed value for the TPP
account.

Q. What if I buy or sell an existing business during the year Who is
responsible for the taxes?
A. The new owner is responsible, however if there is insufficient
property to satisfy the taxes due, the owner on January I would be responsible for
the difference. Most title companies do not do a search of the tangible assets of a
business. You should therefore consult your realtor, attorney or closing agent to
avoid problems in this area.
Q. What if I receive more than one tax return?
A. All returns must be sent back. If you have more than one
location, the assets of each should be listed separately on each return.
Q. What if'! have old equipment'that has been fully depreciated and
written off the books?
A. Whether fully depreciated in your accounting records or
not, all property still in use or in your possession should be reported.
Q.. Do I have to report assets that I lease, loan, rent, borrow or are
provided in the rent?
A. Yes, there is an area on the return specifically for those
assets. Even though the assets are assessed to the owner, they must be listed
for informational purposes.
Q. Is there a minimum value that I do not have to report?
A. No, there is no minimum value. A tangible tax return must
be filed on all assets by April 1.
Q. If I rent my furnished home or condo for a few months, do I have to
file a tangible personal property tax return?
A. Yes, since rental activity is of an income producing nature,
you must file a return which lists your personal property. Items that should
be listed include: Draperies, furniture, appliances and any other personal
property included in the rental unit.
Q. Are there deadlines and penalties?
A. The deadline for filing a timely return is April 1. After
April 1, Florida Statutes provide that PENALTIES be applied at 5% per
month or portion of a month that t(lie return is late. A 15% penalty is
required for unreported property, AND A 25% PENALTY IF NO
RETURN IS FILED.

In the spirit of Christmas
Submitted by Kim Weise
Old Saint Nick was helped out this
year when the Relative Care Giver
Foundation made Christmas light
up for over forty-six families and
123 children in our small-town com-
munity. The Relative Care Giver
Foundation also gave gifts to 30 me-
ridians in counseling, 22 students in
Mrs. Scott's first-grade class, and 22
students in Mrs. Sharon Langford's
fifth-grade class this year.
The event, which took place on
Saturday, December 20th; was held
at the Bell Community Center. When
you walked in, there was a comfort
in the air knowing that you were in
go6d hands. There was a Christmas
tree in the center of the room with
presents all around, gift-wrapping,

crafts for the kids, and much more.
There were also tree give-aways.
The winner of the "relative raising
children tree" donated by Jones Tree
Farm-of Branford, was John Peth of
Bell. The winner of the "low-income
Christmas tree" was Kendra Han-
cock. There was also a Christmas
turkey and trimmings, food basket
give-away; and Patti Woodbee won
that, but she knew of a family in
greater need, and with the spirit of
Christmas within her heart, 'she gave
up her winnings without question to
that family. This event welcomed all
members of the community and out-
reached its generous hands to aid in a
magical Christmas fpr our children.
We would also like to take this op-
portunity to thank Jones' Tree Farm
for their generous donations and all
twenty-two volunteers as "Santa's
helpers" for their support and help.
Many donations were made by fami-
lies within our community, and more.
All donations were certainly accept-
ed and appreciated; the more helpers
Santa has...the more families he can
reach. Thanks for making this holi-
day extra special.!
One at a time, families shopped for
their family while the children made
crafts outside and had snacks. Com-
modities were given to those in need.
Each family waited patiently to take
their turn to fill their Christmas list.
Our wrapping committee wrapped all
gifts so Christmas would be special
while the. next in line came in. Fami-
lies from Chiefland and Old Town
Relatives Raising Children came
who could not get help anywhere
else. You could feel the spirit and
the hope as we served over 46 fami-
lies. Thank you to those in the com-
munity who brought wrapped gifts to
donate. We had a donor come from
Chiefland providing nice toddler and
baby items. We plan on doing this
event again next year, so please do-
nate new and well taken care of used
toys to help bring hope to our chil-
dren in need.

Early last week, Bell Middle
School 6th grader Cassandra Barronf
came home from school excited.
about a project her teacher, Mrs. Jacld
Clark, had proposed for their class.
Mrs. Clark challenged her students
to design a card for military veterans
who would be spending the holidays
in the VA hospital in Gainesville.
Cassandra worked on the project, as
did her classmates, and the next day at
school the students chose a message
for their cards. One hundred and fifty
cards later, the students were ready
to send their cards to the veterans.
Encouraged by the student response
to Mrs. Clark's challenge, sixth grade
parent Nicole Barron and her friend
Andrea Bolton volunteered to take
several of the students to deliver the
cards to the veterans on Monday,
December 22, 2008.
Students Cassandra Barron, Robyn
Messier, Stephanie Stalvey and
Austin Thomas were proud to deliver
the cards to the veterans, whom they
thanked for serving the USA and
keeping their country free. They
were helped by Bell Elementary
School students Zachary Barron and
Jack Henry Bolton. The veterans
were appreciative of the efforts from
the students and their parents.
The students and their parents
would like to thank Mrs. Clark for
encouraging the students to think
about others during the holiday
season and reminding them that it is
more blessed to give than to receive.

Gilchrist County
Woman's Club news
We hope that everyone in Gilchrist
County had a great Christmas last
week, and are getting ready for cele-
brating a Happy New Year 2009 later
this week. The Gilchrist Woman's
Club is looking to start off 2009 with
,a bang, at our first monthly meet-
ing of the year, to be held Thursday,
January 8, at 7 p.m. at our clubhouse
in Trenton. This coming month's
meeting will be hosted by the G.W.C.
Arts & Crafts committee, and' they
have asked all members to bring in
their own artwork to put on display
and be judged. Those lucky items
that are judged best will then move
on to our group's local, district and
state competitions. So bring in your
creations- guests are always encour-
aged to attend as well.
It's still not too late to buy raffle
tickets for the woman's club big Jan-
uary 2009 drawing. You have two su-
per chances at winning great prizes to
be drawn: either a private quail hunt
& lunch, being provided by the ex-
clusive Gilchrist Hunt Club; or a pri-
vate weekend getaway for four, at a
luxurious condo provided at Suwan-
nee Cove. See one of our members
for tickets--only at $10 per ticket, or
get three tickets for $25. The profits
always go back into serving our com-
munity through the woman's club.
We are also still receiving T-shirts
.and shorts for wounded veterans, so
if you could, please donate to the
worthy cause "Sew You Care." In
this small way, you can show you
care and thank our wounded vets.
May all of you enjoy the New Year

THS BETA Club collects cans
for Thanksgiving baskets
The Trenton High School BETA
Club had a very successful food
drive this year collecting 796 cans
for Thanksgiving baskets. The
cans were collected all through the
month of November by middle and
high school students.
As an incentive, students were
encouraged to bring cans to their
first block class; and the class with
the most cans would win a pizza
party sponsored by the BETA club.
The winning class this year was
Mrs. CUrhart's fifth grade class with
164 cans.
The Thanksgiving baskets were
delivered to the Sheriff's Depart-
ment Volunteers and distributed out
into the community. Thanks to ev-

The Log Cabin Quilters are having
a great Christmas Day; some staying
home, some traveling and remember-
ing other days that mean so much. I
have celebrated many Christmases,
and each one holds many memories.
This one, I will have my day with my
brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Lily
Mercer. We will be having fried fish,
cheese grits, and lots of other food;
but the day will pass with lots of talk-
ing and remembering. Jim is now
87 and I'm 84, so we have had lots
of days together. Much has changed
through the years. We went through
the recession when we had plenty to
eat but not much money, but we were
together. Memories mean a lot, and
we have so much to be thankful for:
good health, great friends, but most
of all, a God who has blessed us over
the years. Have a happy day,
Saturday, January 3rd, we will be
having a Pickin' on the Porch with
Roy Franks, and the Can't Hardly

bluegrass and gospel music, great
fellowship; and enjoy a great country
setting.

Well, here we are at the end of
another year and what a year it has
been. More like a roller coaster ride
than \just the passing of time. It's
been a year filled with great sorrow,,
great disappointments, great financial
stress and so the list grows, but it's
also been a year filled with great ac-

He has given us the strength we need
to endure, to survive, and rejoice.
Our Joyful Hearts have remained
joyful and have been a great blessing

the Joyful
Our last meeting was on Wednes-
day, December 17, It was our Christ-
mas. brunch and what a brunch it
was. What a blessing to share the
true spirit of Christmas with such a
special group of ladies. There were
twenty-three of us and more than
twenty-three covered dishes and des-
serts. All of them chock-full of fla-
vor, love and calories. Ask me if we
cared about the calories...we did not.
What we cared about was how to fit
it all on our plate and of course, we
couldn't...but we. tried. Thanks to
each and everyone of you for your
wonderful. tasty treats... we not only
quilt and craft, we cook.
We exchanged cards, gifts, and
Christmas wishes. When we could
finally move again, we cleaned up,
packed up, and departed, reminding
everyone that we would not meet
again until Wednesday, January 7,
2009.
To each and everyone... may this
new year be blessed with the love
of family, and friends, good health,
peace of mind, and a joyful heart.
But to coin a .phrase from the mov-
ies...fasten your seat belts, it's going
to be a bumpy ride.

The Suwannee Valley Players have
begun, rehearsals for their winter
comedy Misconceptions by Michael
Vukadinovich. The comedy, directed
by Janice Grant with the assistance of
Mike Humphries and Gregory Mer-
cier, is a story about lies and miscon-
ceptions that lead to a host of misun-
derstandings.
Two sisters, Claire (Susan Lastra)
and Dora (Elizabdth Phillips), are op-
posites when it comes to just about
everything, and this night is no ex-
ception. Claire has spent her day at
a funeral, while Dora has been at a
wedding. But while Dora complains
of not being able to meet anyone at
the wedding, Claire admits to run-
ning into an old fling, Peter (Frank
Lastra), at the funeral.
I There is one thing about which the
two sisters do agree. Their mother
(Janice Grant) is starting to worry
them with her seemingly random
comments about boats of clothes,
red meat, and Jimmy Stewart. Enjoy
this hilarious comedy as it unfolds
with erroneous conclusions, realiza-
tions, and coincidences that are sure
to bring side-splitting laughs.
Performance dates are January
9th and 10th at 8 p.nm. and the llth
at 2:30. p.m. and January 16th and
17th at 8 p.m. and the 18th at 2:30
p.m. at the Chief Theater on 25 East

to be one of the funniest plays of the
season. Mark your calendars now for
this hilarious event. The play is being

Lawrence I. "Larry"
Brock
Lawrence I. "Larry" Brock, 90,
passed away at 8 p.m. on December
16, 2008, at Cross City Rehabilita-
tion and Health Center.
He was born in Peoria, Ilinois on
May 12, 1918, the eldest of three
children born to Lawrence I. Brock
Sr. and Rose Ann Colvin Brock. In
1939 he married June Adams, the
mother of his children. They divorced
in 1949. In 1968, he married Pauline
Polly, who expired in 1974.
As a young man Larry served in the
C.C. Corps in Idaho. He worked dur-
ing the WWII effort in the manufac-
turing of ammunitions at the Kings-
bury Ordinance Plant in LaPort,
Indiana. In the years prior to retiring
he was manager of Northern Electric
in South Bend, Indiana. In 1973 at
the age of 54, he and his wife Pauline
decided to sell their home in South
Bend and their cottage in Michigan
and move to Suwannee Florida per-
manently. They had discovered Su-
wannee on a vacation with brother
Lyle and found the area so attractive
they wanted to live there full time.
Larry thought it seemed the perfect
place to pursue his favorite sport of
fishing. They purchased three lots
on a newly dug canal at the comer of
Leon and Canal Streets. where they
built their home. For many years
Larry worked at the Village Hard-
ware in Suwannee; he enjoyed visit-
ing with customers, swapping fishing
stories and news of the latest fishing
spots. Larry had many 'favorite' fish-
ing holes that he shared with anyone
interested. He and Jon Farmer, Mon-
roe Shaver, and other special fishing
buddies of their era had some won-
derful adventures fishing the River
and the Gulf.
His sister Lydia Ebert preceded
him in death in 1949, and his broth-
er Lyle Brock expired in 2007. His
brother-in-law Howard Rexstrew and
wife Dorothy preceded him in death
in the early 1990s.
He is survived by his son, .James
Brock and wife Rita; his daughter,
Bonita Aeme and husband Den-
nis; grandchildren, David and Lisa
Aerne, Sabrina and John Baker, An-
gela Brock, Andrew and Toni Brock
and Thomas and Lori Brock, and
seven great-grandchildren. He is
also survived by his special friends
Lucille McQueen and Peggy Dalton
of Moultrie Georgia; several nieces
and nephews including Charlotte Ed-
wards, Lyle Brock Jr, Lee Ann John-
son and Mary Madewell.
A special thanks to the friends and
caregivers at Cross City Rehabilita-
tion and Health Center for all their
loving care. Our heart felt apprecia-
tion to Doctors William J. Mott and
Charles B. Stoer for their skills and
kindness.
A visitation will be held on Friday,.
January 2, 2009, from 5-7 p.m., at the

Care of woody ornamentals, fruit trees
By Marvin Weaver
County Agent '
I have had several calls concerning pruning of woody ornamentals and
fruit trees.
We always say once the tree has gone dormant then it is safe to prune.
We have had several hours of freezing-weather, so most plants have gone
dormant.
I would say by the end of December, early January you can safely prune
back aniy plant you wish. ..
Peaches require a certain amount of chilling hours before they go through
dormancy and then when temperatures reach 60 degrees again they will
bloom. This is why some trees are blooming now. They will be frozen back
several times before March and will reduce the number of peaches you have
on the tree. Your trees with a high number of chilling hours should do well
this year.
Now is the time also if you want to transplant any small woody plants.
Try to get all the feeder roots you can with the plants, and water to seal the
soil around it. You may want to water it twice a week so the roots don't dry
out.
It's also time to clean out weeds and mulch around your plants;
This is good exercise for the Holidays; Work off all that Holiday food.

From the Desk of Gilchrist County Sheriff
David P. Turner
Weekly Sheriff's Report for week ending December 29, 2008
Conditions
are dry,
caution urged
The combination of recent hard
freezes in north central Florida along
with an average drought index of 619
his created higher than normal risks
for wildfires. The index is based on
a scale from 0 to 800, with readings
in the winter months over 540 con-
sidered severe. Hard freezes kill and
dry-out grasses and other light vege-
tation that helps spread fire. Wildland
fire officials are urging citizens to use
caution, especially on New Year's
Eve when many will celebrate with
outdoor cooking fires, bon fires and
fireworks.
While yard debris burning is al-
lowed in most outlying county areas
without a permit, citizens must fol-
low very specific guidelines to bum
safely and legally.
Backyard Burning Guidelines
Check with your local fire depart-
ment and the Division of Forestry
(DOF) to make sure it is legal to bum
in your area. Burners must comply
with county/city as well as DOF fire
ordinances. Make sure you meet the
required setbacks: 25 ft. from your
house and forested areas, 50 ft. from
a public paved road, and 150 ft. from
other occupied buildings. Burn only
yard waste, no household garbage
(includes paper products and news-
papers). Don't burn on windy days.
Never leave a fire unattended. Keep
a water hose or shovel handy in case
your fire escapes. Make suie your
smoke does not obstruct visibility
on nearby roads. Be sure your fire is
completely out before you leave. Use
solid waste pick up in the city limits.
Remember....If your fire escapes,
you may be liable for costs of sup-
pression and damage to the property,
of others.
For those who need permits, the
DOF will issue authorizations on a
daily basis depending on the weather
conditions.. For more information on
bum permits, call the DOF at (352)
955-2010 or visit www.fl-dof.com.
