Hunters Generate
Record Issuance of
Gator Permits -
In less than four hours, all
4,406. of the state's alligator
harvest permits were issued to
2,155 hunters wanting to ex-
perience the thrill of alligator
hunting.
Despite a computer glitch that
blocked permit sales for about an
hour, permits sold out between
10 a.m. and 2 p.m. June 15.
This marks one of the few
times hunters have gobbled up
all available permits since the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Con-

servation Commission (FWC)
began offering statewide alliga-
tor hunts in 1988. The FWC
issues permits on a first-come,
first-served basis. Last year, the
FWC issued only about 2,800
of the 4,300 available permits
because of a shortage of appli-
cants.

At its February meeting, the
FWC decided to give hunters
more flexibility in scheduling
their hunts, and it voted to ex-
tend the length of the alligator'
hunting season. Also, unlike
alligator hunts in previous years
when hunters could purchase
only one permit, the FWC of-
fered 2006 hunters the option of
buying multiple permits. These
strategies worked.

This year's season will include
41 additional hunt days and will
run Aug. 15 through Nov. 1.

For more' information
on alligator hunting, visit
MyFWC.com/gators and click
on "Statewide Hunts."

For many years July 1 has
been the opening day of scallop
season on North West Florida's,
Big Bend coastline. On Satur-
day, July 1, Carrie 'and Adam
wanted to go scalloping and J
and Lyndsay were interested as
well, so we all got together and
went to Suwannee to stay at the
camp and try to find some scal-
lops.
All reports that we had heard
indicated that the shellfish were
in deeper water than the tradi-
tional 3-5 feet. Cindy Jo always'
wants to be in water just deep,
enough that the grass will be
tickling her stomach' as she
snorkels along in. the water.
searching for the shellfish.
In the past few years we
have always taken the. boat ride
across to the Horseshoe Beach
Pepperfish area when searching
for scallops. On Saturday. morn-
ing the weather and the seas
were calm enough for the ride
across the bay to Horseshoe
Channel would be comfortable
for the ladies. As we drove *
across from McGriff Channel
by Red Bank and through the
shallow 'grassy flats, we passed

many people that were fishing
for trout in-the 6-10-foot areas-
As we .got close to the Horse-
shoe Channel. the number -of
boats increased, as there seemed
to .be more people fishing
around the shallows close to the'
channel.
We have had better luck in
past years finding scallops
around Pepperfish Key, so we
continued, North looking for
.clear water in the area where
other boats were anchored
searching for scallops.
As we would slou dow% n and
begin looking in an area, every-
one. on the boat would look
down in the% after for scallops.
We all kept thinking, as the tide
was low just after noon on Sat-
urday, that e% entually we would
find the shellfish. '.In the past
the scallops have been lying on
the top of the grass or swim-
ming along through the 'grass.
Usually when the tide turns and
the water starts in, the scallops
will begin to move, but that was
not the case this time.
By 3:00 p.m. we, had made
our way past Pepperfish and
anchored among a group of
-boats that were 14 mile offshore
in 5 feet of water. I had picked
up a sniall scallop just after get-
ting in the water, and I though
this might be. the place we*

Depending on your individual
preferences, July 4 can have a.
variety of interpretations. If you
are the outdoor type, it means
the official start of the beach
and barbecue season. For others,
it is a time to lay back and,
contemplate vacation plans.
Regardless of how you
welcome the summer season,
each year at this time everyone is
asking the same question...will.
the stock market w ill treat us to
a summer rally between July 4
and Labor Da\, which I define as
the end of summer'?
We did not do 'too badly.
last.year. On July 5, 2005, the
Dow Jones industrial average.
closed 'at 10,371. By Sept. 6,-
theDow had closed at 10,589
for an increase of 2.1 percent.
When' you consider that the
Dow is only up 3.6 percent in.
the -10 months subsequent to
last September, you have to give
some credence to the value ofa
summer rally.
If you subscribe to the theory
that the stock market represents
a series of independent events.,
then a rally has exactly the same
statistical probability as no rally.
The other side of the coin is
that Wall Street is considered to
be a forward looking indicator
for the economy. If that is the
case then we could be in for
some difficult times going
forward.
Last January I wrote that
$701 per barrel Would be the
floor for oil prices....if we were
fortunate. Right now I would up
that number to $80 per barrel.
As the higher energy" prices
ripple through the economy,
it is becoming obvious to

would find them. .
Carrie and Adam had an
encounter with a jellyfish and
they, along with Cindy Jo and,
Lyndsay, were in. the boat eat-
ing those delicious boiled pea-
nuts.
J and I had looked to the
point that we were beginning to
question ourselves on why the'
scallops weren't there. At 'this
point we were ready for a break
so we loaded up in the boat and
headed back to Suwannee.
After getting back to the
camp, I talked to several of our
neighbors that had also gone
scalloping that day. We only
found eleven and thit seemed to
be as many or more than most
everyone else found in the Pep-
perfish area.,
We will wait until later in
the season before we go back
again. The season lasts until
September 10.

Summertime in the South calls
for some really great food.
Some of our favorites like.
watermelon, acre peas, and
good homegrown tomatoes are
very plentiful this time of year.
But nothing says summertime in
the South quite like those good
ol' boiled peanuts. Everyone in,
our family loves them. .
.I have a real appreciation for
the peanut aka pender. This
appreciation came from being
raised on a farm' south of
Chiefland. M\ father was in fact
a peanut farmer. As a child I

everyone, and. especially the
Federal Reserve, _that our old
nemesis, the inflation genie, is
slowly working its way out of"
the bottle. :.
In an effort to try and control
the inflation demon, the Fed will
continue to raise interest rates.
As I write this, Federal Reserve
Chairman Ben Bernanke and
his colleagues are poised to
boost interest rates for the 17th
consecutive time. bringing
the Federal Funds rate to 5.25.
percent in an effort to make sure
that energy costs do not spark a
broader bout of inflation.
If the Fed does raise rates
and I believe it will. will it be
the last increase? In my opinion
the answer is unequivocally no.
There will likely be one and
maybe even two more increases.
After that, you run the risk of,
melting the economy like an ice
cube in the hot July sun.
Now, as long as I am ruining
the start of your summer
vacation, let me add in the war in
Iraq and our national debt. The
current administration still has
not learned the basic economic
truism of guns vs. butter. Of
course, since the funds to fight
the war are "outside" the budget,
basic economic theory does not
apply
We ctild go on and delve into
the mammoth trade deficit that
has made China the number one
holder of Treasury debt. As the
dollar falls in value in response
to our high debt levels, it is
going to become increasingly
difficult to maintain the influx
of capital required to support
the deficit.
So will Wall Street look
beyond these problems and
see a smoother road up ahead?
Possibly, and then we could
easily have a summer rally. At the
risk of sounding monotonous, let
me repeat what I said last year. If
the concerns discussed above get
out hand simultaneously, it will
make the perfect storm look like
a spring shower.

remember' my father taking 'a
great deal of pride in planting
perfectly straight rows in his
peanut fields. Still, today when I
pass a peanut field in Gilchrist
County I look to see how
straight the rows are planted. I
also remember as a child
.praying for rain in a small
country church when all the,
neighboring farms had gone.
through a dry' spring and
summer: Back in those da)s
farmers in our area didn't have
any irrigation. Bro. Willis
Cason nas the preacher and also
a farmer and it wasn't
uncommon to hold special
prayer meetings especially 'to
pra) for rain.

. Boy, have things changed, not'
only have' our young. people
never collected the eggs or
watered the hogs, but the) dri' e
bby crops in the fields that'they
can't e'en identify. Many )outh
,think that food comes from the
supermarket and. they don't
understand the vital role the
American farmers play in
putting food on their tables.
Gosh, if most of our local south
didn't take an agriculture class
or two in high school the\
probably wouldn't e'en know%
that peanuts are legumes or
understand the importance of
crop rotation. I truly belie% e this
education teaches them a
respect for agriculture that the)
might not gain anN v here else in
life.
.If you are not inclined to boil
your own peanuts there are a
couple of good sources that I
can recommend. Mr. Billy)
Roberts of Bell. grows and boils
some of the finest peanuts
around. Sometime. if you :are
lucky \ou can catch him selling.
peanuts around Trenton and
Bell. :The second place I know
to buy good boiled 'peanuts is
Stone'"s BP on Highway 19 just
north of Chiefland. Nancy
(Mathis) and Richard Stone sell
cups of peanuts at the store.. Mr.
Richard cooks them perfectly'
and I'm always glad to stop in
and visit with Nancy and pick
up a cup or two of their boiled
peanuts.
Often times when people are
selling peanuts in stands, beside
the 'road they are dried peanuts
that have been boiled. I just pass
on by because there is nothing.
worse than a dried peanut that
has been boiled. Your best bet
in finding good green peanuts is
at any of the area Hitchcock's
Stores or at Ward's Super-
market in Gainesville. I don't
mind paying 1.99 a pound for
them but I will stand in the store
for 15 or 20 minutes picking out
the very best peanuts for my
Family. I like the peanuts which
are about medium in maturity.
Not the real hard mature nuts or
the real soft pops which the nuts
haven't formed in yet but the
ones that have developed nuts

and are still a little soft.

fJorfedfPeanuls
2 pounds green peanuts
1 gallon water
V cup salt
When buying peanuts to boil
make sure they are green or
fresh dug. Do not, buy dried
.peanuts and try to boil them.
Wash green peanuts several
times and pull off any stems
that remain attached to the,.
peanuts. Place peanuts in a large
1ot, bring to boil and reduce
heat to medium and continue to
boil until the shells are tender,
and peanuts inside are soft. It,
takes at least one hour -to boil
peanuts. After peanuts have
boiled for about 45 minutes I
start tasting them to check on
doneness. Just keep eating a few,
about every 10.,or 15 minutes
until ihe\ !are soft enough for
your taste.
If peanuts are not salty
enough let them soak in the boil
water for about 15. t6 30
minutes. The longer .they set the
saltier they will become. Drain
off water and eat If you have
peanuts left refrigerate, the
peanuts and they will last for
several days.

This letter is to the public to
make them aware of a company

to sell above ground pools. The
company's name is .Blue World
Pools, their address is 2533 N.
Carson St. Suite 4925, Carson

,We received a phone call
from this company and asked if
%we would let one of their sales.
people come out and show us
a pool package and explain the.
great deals they had. We agreed
to a nime and date for this man to
come to our house and listen to
what he had to say.
*We agreed on a pool and a
price and listened to this sales
person tell. us how much this
pool would cost, what the
monthly payments would: be,.
and for how many years we
would be paying on this pool.
We were told that we had 72
hours to cancel this contract with
'no penalty, but after 72 hours we
would lose our deposit of $ 1.000
and be charged a $1,400 fee for
shipment of the pool.
We understood this, the only
'problem was when we finally
got in contact with them it was
three weeks later. At. this time
we were told theie was a charge
of $3,400.00 for securing a
lender and that the seven year
contract for payment went up to
ten years.
I told them that we could not
accept this,'that this is not what
we signed for at the time the
sales person was here and we
had the paperwork saying that.
They told us that if we did not
accept, this offer we would lose
our $1,000.00 and be charged
another $1,400.00.
At this time I am in contact

I would like to take this op-:

to time I read degrading letters
to the editor like the one last
week, from concerned parents
or citizens making totally false
statements about our superinten-
dent, school board members or
our schools. To criticize some-
one or something without first
finding out the facts pertaining
to a certain matter is not only ir-
responsible and damaging to our
.community, but also sets a bad
.example for our kids! What are
\ou the writers of these negative,
disrespectful, false statements
teaching our children'? That
rumor and gossip are FACT and
that you can use the local paper
to spread these lies.
If you are truly concerned
about %\hat goes on in our
schools, then I 'Vould like to
personally in ,ite each and every
one of \ou to attend our school
board meetings and learn %\hat
great things are reallN happening
in our schools. I am asking \ou
to put your time to better use,
by getting educated about the
facts of our schools, than using
that time writing letters that are
false and destructive to our com-
munity.

There Is Freedom
S (Kent Heaton)

Freedom is a precious stone shared by few and
made precious by only those who understand its
worth. Living in a land of freedom does not make us
free. The heart is only free when one realizes the cost
of liberty. Being free recognizes the darkness of
bondage embraced by the pains of death.
Independence comes from a price paid which no true
worth can be measured for the cost is so high. To
celebrate freedom without the observance of the
sacrifice is a well without water.
Where is true freedom to be found but in the
matters belonging unto God? The freedom we
experience in our country is tempered by repeated
changes throughout the years by-the fickle nature of
man. Liberty is relative to time when men seek to
establish their laws. God is not like man! The
freedom offered by God is unchangeable and cannot
be altered by man. "God interposed by an oath, so
that by two immutable things, in which it was
impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong
consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold
upon the hope set before us, which hope we have as
an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast"
(Hebrews 6:17-19). The liberty given by God is
guaranteed by the impossibility for God to lie.
The darkness of sin brings death (Romans 6:23).
Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the one from whence
freedom would come for all men. "The Spirit of the
Lord is on Me; because of this He has anointed Me
to proclaim the Gospel to the poor. He has sent me
to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim deliverance
to the captives, and new sight to the blind, to set at
liberty those having been crushed, to proclaim the

acceptable year

of the Lord" (Luke 4:18-19).,

Through the cross Jesus offered freedom to those
who would be willing to take up their cross and
follow Him.
Freedom is found in Jesus Christ. We are,'to
stand fast in this liberty (Galatians 5;1) and remember
that we are "called to liberty" (Galatians 5:13). That
freedom is found where the Spirit of the Lord is.
"And the Lord is that Spirit; and where the Spirit of
the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with our face
having been unveiled, having beheld the glory of the
Lord as in a mirror, are being changed into the
same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit
of the Lord." (2 Corinthians 3:17-18).
Freedom. brings peace of mind to face the
haunting darkness of death (Philippians 4:7). In
Christ one has hope of eternal life that transcends the
mortal flesh (2 Corinthians 5:1-1-8). The plague of
fleshly temptation will not be victorious to those who
are free from sin (Romans 6:12-22). Paul and Silas
were imprisoned in a Roman jail but they sang songs
of freedom (Acts 16:25). Epictetus (60-140 A.D.)
said, "He whose body is chained, and his soul
unbound, is free. There are no cords of
imprisonment to children of God.
Freedom comes from the cleansing blood of
Jesus Christ (1 John 1:7). By His sacrifice we are no
longer bound in the chains of sin. Our liberty is the
everlasting hope of "a pure river of Water of Life,
clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God
and of the Lamb" (Revelation 22:1). That is the
greatest joy in our freedom. In the Spirit we find
liberty and peace forever more.

I~O ~CABIN. QUILTERS~

Shown is a cover brought in to the Levy County Quilt Mu-
seum for us to see.. It is woven and the colors have held very.
. well. At one corner it says, Richland County, Ohio, 1841.

Log Cabin Quilters
Log Cabin Quilters met
Thursday, June 29th at the Levy
County Quilt Museum. The red
and white log cabin was taken
out of the frame and Goldie
will hem it at home. A dresden
plate was put together and will.
be quilted later to be given away
next year. Shirley put together
a butterfly and %%hat fun we had
telling her how to do' it. Every-
one has their own %wa% and there
were ten quilters telling her how
to get it ready. .She finally got
it done and will quilt it at home
but she will always remember
the advice she got.
We have had a lot of fabric
and books come in this week.
One lady from Lady Lake.
brought in three boxes of beau-
tiful quilt fabric and as this :is
.brought in we try to make all

kinds of crafts that we sell very
reasonably for the upkeep of the
museum. Some ask how we can
sell for so little but all it takes js
time. We do appreciate so many
that keep us busy.
Lunch was very good today,
meat loaf, mashed potatoes with.
cheese, green beans, rice, maca-
roni. and cheese, potato salad,
tossed salad coconut pie, jello,'
butter pecan cake, cherry cheese
cake, and so much more.
We had 14 members and 2,'.
guests present.

Bell Babe Ruth
All-Stars To Compete
in State Tournament
(Continued from Page One)
the fourteen and under All Star
Team beat Madison 5 to 3.
On June 17, the final day of
the tournament, they went up
against an undefeated Chiefland.
In the first game, it seemed.that
the Bell All Stars were headed
for defeat, but as Holli Moore,
the 14 and Under All Star's

pitcher, struck out girls from
Chiefland, she also hit in the ty-
ing runs for Bell. They defeated
Chiefland in the first game b10 to
6. The Bell All Star team had a
thirty minute break after their
first game before they had to
get back to the field for their
final, game of the tournament.
Holli Moore yet again proved
herself by striking out girl after
girl and earned the title of MVP
of the tournament. The fourteen
and under Bell All Star Team
defeated Chiefland 6 to 1 win-

ning first place in Districts and
earning their right to participate
in the Babe Ruth Softball State
Tournament.
Each of these girls made an
awesome play at some point
in this tournament. This small
team of ten girls will travel to
the Babe Ruth State Tournament
on July 12 to stay in Oviedo un-
til the 16. After opening ceremo-
nies on Thursday, July 13, there
will be games for the girls to par-
ticipate in, These games include
Throwing Accuracy contests,
Home Run Derby, Team Relay
Races, and a dunking tank for
their, coaches. But when all the
fun is put aside, these girls will
have to face All Star teams from
all over the state in this double
elimination tournament.
The team is looking to raise
money to go to the Babe Ruth
Softball State Tournament. This

money is for uniforms and the
hotel. They are selling raffle
tickets for gift cards, bakes sales,
carwashes and are accepting do-
nations with many thanks. Their
coaches, Troy Whitley and Chris
Sanders, are extremely proud to
say they are getting close to their
goal.
The.team says thanks to the
sponsors and a- special. thanks
to The Tan Zone .for the support
through out the entire season.
They would also like to thank
their parents for supporting
them. They would also like to
give a-special thanks to their bat
girl Talia Whitley.
- The girls have been working
diligently and hard. To this Cin-
derella team we say, good luck
and Go Bulldogs! .

Research shows that children

parents are playing a critical role
