The morning began calmly enough but shortly after the Watermelon Parade began the skies opened up and rained (quite hard at times). The rain was bitter sweet since we all know how much we need the rain; it would have been nice if the many parade participants could ha e gotten through these festivities without getting soaked. The parade did complete its run and the crowd of onlookers stayed around, many huddled under the tents nearby trying to stay dry. Sadly, the Watermelon Contest Awards could not be presented due to the rain, thunder, and lightning. This year there were 20 watermelons submitted in the competition Sand congratulations. go out to the winners; 1st place with the largest -individual watermelon went to Harold Tillis with his 50 lb. Ayers The Gilchrist County Com- mission took action in their June 5th meeting to discuss, th sign ordinance 05-02. .The four member board. in the absence of Chairman Trnnum\ Langfford, decided to enforce the ordinance and give the real estate compa- nies, politicians and others that put yard sign' on the right of way, two neeks to move their .signs. Beginning June 23, the Gilchrist Count\ Road Depart- ment has been directed to re- move the signs from the right- of-way. The signs can be picked up at the Gilchrisn County Road Department during regular busi- ness hours. Gilchrist County Adminis- trator Ron. McQueen asked the board ,for, direction after the board took action in a previous meeting to enforce the sign or- dinance. When the road depart- ment began to remove signs from the right-bf-way, commis- sioners contacted the Road De- partment and had the action stopped. The County Adminis- trator following that_ action wanted the board to make a de- cision on whether they .wanted the ordinance enforced. The sign ordinance under 17.8.4, Placement standards, in Right of Way, Supports for signs or sign structures shall not be placed in or upon a public right of way or public easement, except under the terms of a lease betl een the owner of the easement or right of way and the. owner of the signs. The paragraph also identifies that no ground sign shall project over a .public right of way. The board in the discussion' of the sign ordinance deter- mined that real estate signs have become the most visible signs that are being placed on the right of way.i A road department spokes- man explained that 17 signs were identified at the intersec- tion of SR 26 and CR 341 on both the state and county right of way. "The signs appear to make a cluster around a stop sign at an intersection," Justin Watson, Gilchrist County Road Superintendent explained. "If you start making excep- tions to this ordinance now, you are going to have the same problem as you are currently having," Commissioner Randy: Durden explained. "If we are going to enforce this, the board should give no- tice to the o ners of the signs to allow them time to move .them, from the right of way," Com- ' missioner Mitchell Gentry ex- plained. "In a matter of constitutional law, the county must be consis- tent in their action involving all of the signs," Gilchrist County attorney John McPherson ad- vised the board. McPherson explained to the board that the county has juris- diction on a state, highway right of way involving the removal of signs that don't: belong to the. Ameris Health Systems, LLC Seeking $60,000 Contribution For CON By John M. Ayers The Gilchrist County Com- mission recently received a let- ter from Ameris Health Sys- tems, LLC seeking a donation of $60,000 to assist the Certifi- cate of Need applicant in de- fraying the cost of the applica- tion. Ameris reported in their let- ter that they were preparing a new application for a Certificate of Need to the State of Florida to establish a full-service medi- cal-surgical hospital located in Chiefland to serve residents in Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy coun- ties. Ameris Chairman, Sam J. Lewis, reports, "The need for the hospital continues to mag- nify and the residents of Gil- christ County continue to drive their personal vehicles or ride the EMS ambulances for ap- proximately twice the time to the nearest hospital, as com- pared to a much shorter arrival time to the proposed hospital in Chiefland." Ameris spent $250,000 two years ago on the Certificate of Need that AHCA denied. Ameris is requesting the board of commissioners of the three counties and their local business leaders to assist in the CON costs for the new application. The health systems company is requesting $60,000 from coun- ties and business leaders to help defray the CON costs. Ameris explains the funds will be placed in a special 'account with Drummond Bank, which will manage disbursements upon receipt of statements and proper (Continued to Page Sixteen) These 5-8-year-old anglers were excited to be involved in the Kids Fishing Tournament. Ayers The Suwannee River Shrine Club continued the tradition of holding the Gold Hook Kid's Fishing Tournament, in 2006 with the assistance of Rayanne Ferguson in the absence of her husband and tournament chair- man Sam Ferguson,. Sam for more years than I can recall. always worked to hold this fund raising activity to allow the kids and the Shrine organization to work. together in this most worthwhile "activity. I grew up .fishing. with- my father on the banks of the Su- wannee River and fishing with family friends, Mr. Bill and Mrs. Barbara Gause. We would 'fish the culverts along highway 349 between Suwannee and Old Town as well as the canals lead- ing to Bell Springs and the boat ramp in Dixie County behind the Suwannee Gables Restau- rant. In those days we just wanted to catch fish, they didn't have to be big fish;-we just had to have some action. Daddy always put ts in the place that he knew the fish would hit our bait quick. He 'knew the bite %would ha\e to be quick and consistent in order to keep our attention and have us sit still long enough to keep our cane pole in the water. I can remember the times that I was fortunate enough to have one or the other of our children want to fish in the Shrine Gold Hook Kid's Fishing Tournament.. Both Carrie and J hase fished in the activity and I always enjoyed spending the time with them. As I looked at the pictures of the event that was held Satur- day, I see another generation of families that are taking the time to share with their children the importance, of spending time with them one on one on the beautiful Suwannee River. We that have worked with the caring, inolsed people like Sam Ferguson for many years will miss him. The organiza-' tions that he has been involved with will miss his leadership as well as the little things that he always did involving kids when they needed a helping hand. You don't really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round. will wave at his parents every- time around and why his parents will always wave back. William D. Lauren Rudd One of the points that came out of a recent talk I gave was that there seems to be an up- welling of demand for foreign investments. If you are going to invest in foreign companies, one of the easiest, safest and most efficient ways of doing so is to purchase American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). The shares of most .foreign companies that trade in the U.S. markets are traded as ADRs. Issued by certain banks, each ADR represents one, or more shares of a foreign stock,' or pos- sibly a fraction of a share. More importantly, companies issuing, ADRs are required to provide' financial statements that meet our GAAP standards. If you own an,ADR, you have the right 'to obtain the foreign stock it represents. Howev er, for the most part investors usually find it more convenient to sim- pl\ own the ADR The price of an ADR corresponds to the price of the foreign stock in its home market, adjusted for the number of foreign shares that the par- ticular ADR represents. One ofinmy favorite companies issuing ADRs is No artist. The company's prescription drugs include treatments for nervous system and ophthalmic disor- ders, cardiovascular diseases. and cancer. Its Sandoz subsid- iary deals in generics and pro- duces finished dosage products as well as active pharmaceutical ingredients for other producers of generic drugs. Novartis' consumer health unit includes, such brands as Ex-Lax, Maalox, and Theraflu. Novartis is also the proud parent of the Gerber baby. Its CIBA Vi- siondivision manufacturers e.ei drops, contact lens products. Its animal health unit offers parasite control products (Sentinel) and pharmaceuticals for pets and farm animals. The companN's net earn-' ings for the first quarter ending March 31 came in at 83 cents per share, as compared %% ith 63 cents during the same period a year ago, an increase of 32 percent. Novartis net sales increased 13 percent to $8.3 billion. The increase was directly attribut- able to the dynamic growth in pharmaceuticals, which contin- ued to outpace the market, as well as acquisitions and new product launches. Looking at Novartis' share price since the beginning of the year, on Jan. 3, the ADRs closed at $53.47, as compared with a closing price on May 30 of $55.41, for an annualized gain of 8.9 percent., The company's intrinsic Gay Marriage Debate (Kent Heaton) The headlines announce the coming debate in our government to what constitutes a marriage. The homosexual agenda has now been, placed before the governing bodies of law to determine what defines marriage. To debate an issue is to contend in words or arguments about truth between persons of different opinions, each endeavoring to prove his own opinion right. To debate the truth of marriage is to debate the truth whether the Sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Marriage has always been and will always be a union of a man and a woman. , Marriage is not defined by the lustful desires, of a perverted community who want to find a place of acceptance in the world. The homosexual agenda has taken a minority of acceptance and forced their tainted lifestyle upon the majority. Homosexuality is a perverted form of what God has created in nature. "Marriage is honorable: in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4). The honor of marriage is one man and one woman. What is there to debate about the union of a man and a woman? The joining of a man and a woman serves to fulfill the natural design of humankind. Paul declared in 1 Corinthians 7:1-5: "Now 'concerning the matters about which you wrote. It is well for a man not to touch a woman. But because of the temptation to immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to'her husband. For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not rule over his own body, but the wife does. Do not refuse one another except perhaps by agreement for a season, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, lest Satan tempt you through', lack of self-control" (1 Corinthians 7:1-5). Marriage is defined as a man and a woman. The design of the body serves the purpose of fulfilling the role of benevolence and the conjugal rights prescribed by Jehovah. This cannot be done in the perversion of homosexuality. "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men Working that, which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet" (Romans 1:26-27). Marriage is a natural union of a man and a woman. Homosexuality is an unnatural union of the male or female to the same, which is against nature. Who established the natural world but Jehovah God? Children are born from the union of a man and a woman and man can never change that. Homosexuals deny the manner they were created the union of a man and woman. Homosexuality serves only a purpose of perverted sexual desires resulting in the penalty for their perversion. The law of marriage was ordained by God in Genesis 2:18 "And the Lord God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helpmate for him.'" That helpmate was a woman, formed from the rib of man "And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man" (Genesis 2:22). What is there to debate? Truth is God's design! Marriage is God's design! Letter, To The Editor : Another school yearha's ended and with it my son's information of some of the changes at Bell High School. During our dis- cussion, I learned that the Bell High School principal, Buddy Schofield, %%ill be'leavihg for Dixie County High School. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I will miss him. My sons have been a part of the Gilchrist County School system for 18 years and Mr. Schofield has been a large part of those years as a vice-principal and principal. I have watched him grow from a rigid, uncom- promising man to someone, who two years ago, recognized toilet papering of the school as a harm- less senior prank. Whenever I had concerns with my sons or the school, I always knew his door was open. He would listen and we would come to a resolution. It may not have always been the one I wanted, but I was given the. opportunity to be heard. So to- day, Mr. Schofield, I want to say thank you and wish you the best. Gilchrist County's loss will be Dixie County's gain. As my son Sean and I dis- cussed the impending changes at Bell High School, .1 had tod laugh at his analysis of our current school system. He said "'lMom, it's that time 'of the Near when all the administrators and teachers gather at the steps of the courthouse to spin the job wheel of fortune to find out what they will be doing and where 'they' will be next year.", Ahh, out of the mouths of babes! Sponsored by the Uhiversity of Florida College of Dentistry and 'the Duval County Health Department, the focus of "Oral Cancer: It Spreads Faster Than You Think" is to raise public* awareness of this deadly disease its signs, causes and prevention and to encourage regular oral cancer exams to increase earls detection. Oral-cancer is the fourth most common cancer in black- men and the seventh most common in white men. It strikes nearly 30,000 Americans each year and' ,'proves fatal for more than 7,000 people annually. Yet nearly 90 percent of those whose oral cancer is detected early will. survive. The campaign, %which targets area residents-because of North- east Florida's disproportionate burden of new oral cancer cases and deaths, will include public .service announcements on Jack- sonville radio stations WSOL- FM and WJBT-FM. The early diagnosis message w ill also be advertised on billboards, buses and informational materials, including posters and brochures disseminated to communities throughout the Jacksonville area. Early detection is the key' to survival and most people with' oral cancer caught in the .early. stages will still be alive five years after diagnosis. Compare that to a 20 percent, five-year survival rate for those: with a late-stage diagnosis,,, when cancer has spread beyond.. the mouth and neck. Tragically, more than two- thirds of new oral cancer cases.' are diagnosed at a late stage. , That's why the "Oral Cancer: It Spreads Faster Than You Think'"; campaign seeks to drill home'the.' message of early and frequent; oral cancer exams. The oral. cancer exam is a fast and painless procedure ,- performed by a dentist. It in- volves a thorough inspection of" the mouth, back of throat and neck. Because early detection is .crucial, patients should always request exams as part of their . dental check-ups, even when', they do not have symptoms. Reriee Emenecker FWC Offers Unique Hunting Opportunities The Florida Fish and Wild- life Conser'ation Comiiission (FWC) is offering sportsmen some unique hunting opportuni- ties for the coming season. The FWC is pro\ hiding sports- men mobility-impaired hunts, supervised youth hunts, fam- ily hunts, quail hunts and track vehicle and airboat hunts on selected wildlife management areas (WMAs). SWorksheets" are available at FWC regional offices and on- line at MyNFWC.com/hunting under "Limited Entr\ Hunts." The period for submitting ap- plications to be included in the random drawings begins 10:00 a.m. tEDTi June 20 until July 7. Applications may be submitted through the Internet. at tax col- lectors' offices or at any license agent. Applications are no lon- ger accepted by mail. Mobility-impaired hunts are -for persons who require special equipment. These hunts are not intended for hunters who have a Florida Disabled Person Hunting and Fishing Certificate, but rather those who are perma- nently confined to a wheelchair, persons who require the use of mechanical aids (crutches and walkers) to walk or those with complete single-leg amputa- tions. Another unique hunt is foi hunters 8-15 years old. Two WMAs in the North Central Region (Camp Blanding and Andrews) offer opportunities for non-hunting adults to supervise young hunters on public hunting areas where the number of hunt- ers and the hunting areas are rig- idly controlled to provide an op- timum learning experience and maximum safety. These hunts are popular, and the number ol applicants exceeds the number of spaces available each year. 7239 S.W. 80th Avenue Trenton, Florida 32693 Gilchrist County 4-H Judging Team Wins Second Place In State Competion The Gilchrist County 4-H Poultry Judging teams competed in the state 4-H Poultry Judging Contest at the University of Flor- ida campus on Monday. There are seven two-day hunts a3 ail- able on the Hutton Unit and two four-day hunts on the Field Trial Area. The quota is t wo groups per hunt on the Hutton Unit and three groups per hunt on the Field Trial Area. A group may consist of up to three hunters. A Property Values One of the most frequent questions I get asked is, "How 'much is property worth in Gilchrist County". I would like to tell you that the answer to that question is simple. It is not simple, and sometimes almost impossible to answer. Property values have a multitude of variables. One factor that affects property value is location. Being on a paved road for instance adds significant salue. Another factor is what is on the land itself. A piece of land that is mostly established pasture with some picturesque granddaddy oaks is more valuable than a similar parcel that is planted in pine. The size of the land is a variable that is very important. In most cases,, smaller parcels bring a higher per acre price than larger ones. Based on recent sales, the average of 10 acre parcels range from $11,000 to $15,000.00 per acre. On the other hand, 5 acre parcels are averaging a -slightly higher $12,000 to $16,000 per acre. - If you are interested in finding out the value of your property, call me today to schedule your no obligation Market Analysis. Suwannee River Shrine Club Gold Hook Kids Fishing Tournament (Continued from Page One) By Rayanne Ferguson This Suwannee River Shrine Club "Gold Hook Award"' Kids Fishing 'Tournament had to be one for the record. -If you were anywhere near the river on Saturday around 10:00 a.m., you understand completely. Thunder, lightning and a lot of rain were the only things you could see at a glance, out across the water. Our young fishers and their partners were so dedicated or determined to catch a fish that they were in and out hiding under trees, running to their truck or wrapping in a tow- el. Everyone knew that in just' a minute this shower would pass and they could all get back to the business at,,hand-FISHING!" r, minll cjio i-i. p Jlu a ;jj t( K , Well weren't we all surprised, it was still raining after all boats %were- loaded and continued to rain during weigh in. When Noble Sam Ferguson, Tournament Chairman passed away in April 2006, Noble, Lloyd Landrum stepped up and volunteered to make sure this tournament would take place as if we never skipped a beat. With added helping hands from Noble Bobby Heath, SRSC Treasurer. they did exactly that. I will for- ever be grateful to these two men as well as many other Nobles of the club and their ladies for malk- ing this tournament the Shriners next best. Sam would have been so pleased. There is pride shown through the eyes of the Suwannee River Shrine Nobles each year as they collect dona- tions in this fund-raiser for The, Shrine Children Hospitals for crippled and burned children. ages birth through 18 years old. Again. Thank yoiu Noble Lloyd. The fish weighed an, where from 1 oz to 71bs-7oz. It was very interesting to watch weigh-in. These three men would fight with the larg- est. and chase the smallest on- their knees in the rain making sure that every slimy fish made it to the scale. Our young fishers stood by very patiently wiping the rain to see the scale as it would total their catch 'and then step back to ask just toi make sure that was right. Then they would quickly run down the bank to release their catch. The river didn't lose much this year because most bass and bream were returned to the beautiful Suwannee.: How cool is that? Every child with their parents holding cameras -waited in the rain for all calculations because, following that would be the pre- sentation of that big trophy on display and someone %would get to take home a brand new (still in the bo\,) trolling motor. Florida's Climate Leads To Summer Rains The drought conditions that. have plagued our state for the- last several weeks have affected our homes, businesses and daily lives in many ways, the most notable being increased wildfire activity, particularly along the 1-95 corridor in East Central Florida. This dry weather is ultimately rooted in the climate patterns that develop over sev- eral months stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Sunshine State. Climatologists monitor weather trends and the state of the Pacific Ocean and are able to predict seasonal climate pat- terns up to several months in advance. While it is impossible to pre- dict exactly when the summer rains will come, climatologists examine historical patterns and current weather conditions to project the probability that those weather changes may occur. Cli- matoligical studies are not taken lightly, and many in the field spend considerable time pro- viding forecast infonnation re- sources to our local officials, fire personnel, farmers, and citizens. Our data is drawn from weather monitoring facilities located throughout our state, reported in real-time to climate and weather U U AM ERI mm CAN R=VOUTION - M 30 Years Service to the Tri-County Communities www.scogginschevybuick.com U U analysts who can make changes . and updates to their analysis. Historically, Florida has al- ways been noted for warm, dry winters that lead to wet sum-' mers. As residents of this beau- tiful state, we are well aware that our warm winters provide incredible weather conditions while our neighbors to the north freeze, and our summers produce rains that generate lush plant life for our homes and farms. Examining our seasons from a multitude of factors is paramount to climatologists. Among these factors, the surface temperature of the tropical Pacific Ocean has the strongest and most identifi- able influence on Florida's sea- sonal climate patterns. El Niflo refers to warmer than normal Pacific Ocean temperatures and is well-known for bringing copi- ous rainfall and cooler tempera- tures to the state in the winter and spring seasons. La Nifia refers to colder than normal sea surface temperatures in the same region and corresponds to warmer and relatively dry winter and spring seasons. Neutral re- fers to the ocean state when sea surface temperatures are close to normal. We have recently tranisitioned from a period of La Nifia, which was primarily re- sponsible for the dry conditions the state experienced the last few months, to Neutral, which normalizes weather in the sum- mer with warm temperatures and increased moisture. As we move towards the summer months, we can all expect the weather to reflect the hot and humid condi- tions we have grown to love. A closer examination of Florida's current climate reveals that the Neutral phase we are currently under also corresponds to variable temperatures and rainfall patterns that average out closer to normal over the course of the summer season. The after- noon rains we are so accustomed to sometimes take the form of frequent thundershowers, which typically begin later this month or early June and increase int frequency as the summer pro- gresses. The current analysis indicates that there is nothing prevent- ing seasonal thundershowers from arriving on. time and in adequate amounts. For example, over the last 10 years, Florida's precipitation from May to J une has increased every.year, almost seven inches last year alone. "Nonnals." the short name for the 30-year average, lists pre- cipitation averages historically increasing from 3.74 to 7,35 inches from May to June. Last year alone, rainfall increased from 4.19 to 11.75 inches from May to June. While historical trends may vary, this analysis clearly projects improvement in rainfall during this dry period. -It should be reiterated that the timing of exact weather changes is difficult to ascertain, but what should bring comfort to us as Floridians is that our climate, our long term weather history, is steeped in a pattern of dry winters and rain filled summers. Those projected rains will hope- fully bring relief to Florida's citizens soon. Dr. James O'Brien is the Robert 0.
