Skip was named "Coach of the Decade" in the 90s for winning four World Series. John Magnusson To Retire From Officiating The Game That He Has Been So Devoted To By Anna Wild Most of us know John Mag- nusson either from Trenton High School where he is the Dean of Students or from one of the many games he has umpired in our area. Mr. Magnusson has had a passion for umpiring that I did not know the full extent of until just recently. His love of the game began as a boy growing up in Kissimmee back before Disney came to town; he grew up in a very rural area much like ours. He began umpiring for little leagues while he was in high school. After college he began coaching at P.K. Yonge and um- pired for the American Legion's Summer Program. He found his true nitch as an umpire and is one of the original members of the South East Conference Umpiring Staff. His list of ac- complishments are quite long but a few of the highlights in his career include: umpiring 19 SEC Tournaments, which is the most any umpire has done; umpiring three College World Series Divi- sion 1 games in Omaha and also a Division 2 World Series. This year he will go back to umpire the Jr. College World Series for the second time in Grand Junc- tion, Colorado and this will be his final game to umpire. After this final game he will say good-bye to umpiring pro- fessionally. For those of us in Gilchrist County we may still see him calling the shots at an alumni game or two. And of course he will. still remain at Trenton High School as their Dean of Students. But overall he will move from calling the shots on the field to evaluat- ing the umpires on the fields. He is Co-Owner of the Florida Collegiate Umpires which pro- vides umpires to 40 colleges throughout the south east region. He has about 100 umpires cur- rently working through the Flor- ida Collegiate Umpires and he evaluates their performance and offers direction. Mr. Magnusson also trains at umpiring camps, clinics and schools. I had to ask him what he has found so alluring about being an umpire, after all the umpire is the one who is being yelled at all the time. Of course in his posi- tion as Dean of Students at Tren- ton High School he may often feel like he is on the field all the time. He explained that, "I try to look at all that with a sense of humor because people who yell (Continued to Page Eighteen) Gilchrist County Third Grade Students Score, Well On FCAT I Lt_ _. _t ii ~ 'Not-- Gilchrist County, Florida 2006 Announced Candidates County Commissioner District 2 Mitchell Gentry, 4959 SW 80th Ave., Bell, FL 32619 352-463-7080 (D). C*O*O*K*I*N*G Streetwise By Lauren Rudd Watching a company's shares cascade downward, after claw- ing their way upward for one or more years, does call for, some emotional fortitude. It also means that you could be facing- an outstanding buying opportu- f.nity.. Consider, for example, St. Jude Medical. Until recently, the company was a darling of Wall Street...that is up until about Jan- uary ISth of this )ear when the' -shares reached a peak of $54.28. From then on it was a do% n hill slide for both the Street's regard for the company and its share price. On April 26th, the shares vpere trading at $40. a decline of 26 percent from its peak. A Near ago. when I last wrote about St. Jude, its shares %were trading at about $39. My projected share price was $49 against an intrinsic value of $50. As you can see. the share price reached that level and then retraced itself almost exactly. Was this brought about by some in the edge of the channel up between the oyster bars in the deepest portion of the channel. I still thought we could get the Dusky through. As the boat began to drag the bottom, I thought we were out of gas. but %%e were just out of water. Within 50 feet of the first marker, the boat felt like it had been planted in the mud. We were stuck. It was just after 8:00 p.m. and the tide was still running. out arid low tide wasn't until 9:40 p.m. Weall decided there was nothing "e could do but wait for the'lidet6' come back: By 10:30 p.m, the ind had increased to 25-knots blowing out of the northeast with a cold chill. We all tried to find the' warmest places we could get. -into on board.' By :11:30. we 'could see a shinning spotlight at the east entrance of the channel. SWe didn't know at that time that it was Scott Akins looking for; us, but he couldn't get to us and we had no way to communicate with him. We were still w without enough water to run our motor. By 12:30 a.m. "e had begun to move through the channel at San idle speed tow ard the river. It was just after 1:00 a.m. "hen. we got lto the point in the river wherewe could see the lights of 'Miller's Marine and other know n land marks. This was an experience that I will' never forget. It seems that every time we go off shore, we have one of these unforgettable' experiences. By Cindy Jo A My mother and I recently traveled to 'West Florida to attend her family's reunion. The reunion was held 'in Milligan. which h is near Crest\ ie". I remember hearing my, grandfather talk'ab6ut Milligan when I was just a small child. He would mention the Yello%' River from time. to time., Once. %%hen I went to West Florida to xisit the Barnhill clan I saw the Yellow Ri'er and it wasn't t too impressive e. The clay content in the soil in that area makes the ri'er \\ater Nelloa. In fact even seeing it through a child's ey es I kno" it didn't compare to our Suwiannee. Come to think of it there just aren't too manN ria ers ans % here that can compare to the Suwannee. Ma\ be it's because I ha'e such happy\ memories of time spent on the riser. When %%e %ere children my cataclysmic disaster? No. it was not. Let's see why. IMy earnings forecast for the company's 2005 fiscal year was $1.46. On January 25th. St. Jude announced FY 2005 earnings of $1.04 per share, as compared to $1.10 per share in 2004. On the surface those numbers might seem discouraging. However, adjusted earnings were $1.54 per share, as compared to an adjusted $1.16 in 2004. a 33 percent increase. The first numbers are GAAP numbers, meaning that they ad- here to strict accounting guide- lines. The second set eliminates certain one time events. Al- though it is generally unwise to de iate from the harsh reality of GAAP. this time I \would make an exception. The reason is that St. Jude's adjusted earnings number ex- cludes 47 cents per share related to the acquisitions of Advanced - Neuromodulation Systems, Savacor, Velocimed LLC and Endocardial Solutions. The company's core operation re- mains solid. For ev idence of that, you only have to look at St. Jude's earn- ings for the quarter ended March 31st. The company reported 36 cents per share, as compared with 32 cents per share a year ago. Revenues increased IS percent to $784 4 million from grandparents held' an annual July 4th cookoutt at Fowlers Bluff. My brothers and cousins lo ed to climb to the op of the boathouse and jump from the roof into the ri er. A few Nears later I rode a school bus from Chiefland to Manatee Springs with, Coach McCall and took swimming lessons. I remember ha% ing fun e' en though m) lips were blue from the chilly spring % after. As a teenager se' eral of my Cedar KeN friends and I would slip up to Hart Springs hoping to see some of those good looking Gilchrist County boys we had heard so much about. Time mo ed on and John and I started dating. A great many of those dates were spent in a ski boat on the Su dannee. We thought nothing about spending. almost e'ery Saturday w'ith $663 9 million. In its future looking guidance. St. Jude projected earnings per share of 'between 36 and 39 cents for the second quarter and, $1.55 to $1.60 for the full year. including an allowance for stock option expense. Given that the future perfor- mance of a company's shares is - anchored to its intrinsic value. the next step would be to calcu- late those numbers for St. 'Jude. A discounted earnings approach that assumes an initial earnings number of 393.6 million, an earnings growth rate of 1625 percent and a discount rate of 11 percent. y ields a per share intrin- sic value of $43.30. Using a discounted free cash flow model with the same earnings parameters and a 7.8 percent weighted cost of capi- tal. yields an intrinsic value of $57.10 per share. My 2006 earnings 'estimate for St. Jude is $1.56 per share. It the cuiefit multiple or P/E ratio' of 37 remains constant, and my earnings estimate is accurate, - then the shares should be trading at 3Pout $57 in a year or less, for a gain of about 42 percent. A Letter To The Editor As you know I have not been in the greatest of health for some time now This past Saturday afternoon I got a very -ivid re- minder when I %as dri ing north on CR 341 and had a blowout on my pick-up. Although I had the factory equipment. I found that I did not have the physical strength to get the job done While the wife and daughter were on the way with a big floor jack. a pick-up truck pulled over and a familiar voice asked if I needed help. The driver pulled over in front of my truck and he and his son started walking toward me and called me by name. I wvas astounded to see our Sheriff David Turner. who had gained some weight because of medical reasons. While I %was trying to regain my composure he had already put his fine son on the problem at hand. It \was very obvious that Nick had been there before and he wouldd not let me do anything at all My "\ife and daughter arrived just in the nick of time with the big floor jack. Nick had the spare on the truck in jig time Thanking the both of them seemed so inadequate. I really wonder ho\w many county officials wouldd do, the same thing to render aid to a senior citizen.. If you will be so kind as to print this. maybe there .will be more Gilchrist County residents "ho realize we do hae a sheriff that does care for and about all of us. For the person of faith, that simply means that when the pray-er has "clean 'hands and a pure heart" his/her prayers will be heard in a mighty way before God. So much is going on in our world today that whenever people or situations come before the mind, the dili- gent who pray will place their petitions before the Throne of Grace, and do so immediately, even if the prayer is one said silently. As our. local Gilchrist County military personnel go about their business each day in defending us here on America's shores .against- terrorism and other threats, the least we can do here at home is to pray for them, and daily. Please keep the following list handy as you lay your peti- tions before the Lord, for these young men and \%omen deserve your best and the best you can give them is your time. (If you kno% of an active military per- son who is not listed, please con- tact the Gilchrist Counr. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. . Maximum Contaminant Level Goal or MCLG: The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. . Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements that a water system must follow. Treatment Technique (TT): A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water. . Maximum residual disinfectant level or MRDL: The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Maximum residual disinfectant level goal or MRDLG: The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs to not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants. "ND" means not detected and indicates that the substance was not found by.laboratory analysis. Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/1) one part by weight of analyte to 1 million parts by weight of the water sample. Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per 1 iter (pg11l) one part by weight of analyte to 1 billion parts by weight of the water sample. Picocurie per liter (pCi/L) measure of the radioactivity in water. However, samples collected in January 2006 were found to be of satisfactory quality. The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: (A) Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife. (B) Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming. (C) Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses. (D) Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems. (E) Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the EPA prescribes regulations, which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water, which must provide the same protection for public health. Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk .of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). We at the City of Trenton would like you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources. We are committed to insuring the quality of your water. If you have any questions or concerns about the information provided, please feel free to call any of the numbers listed. Pub. Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Cost-Share Program For Landowners To Begin Florida Agriculture and Con- sumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson is pleased to. announce that beginning May 1st the department's Divi- sion of Forestry will offer a new Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Cost Share Program to eligible non-industrial private forest landowners. The goal 'of this program 'is minimize southern :pine beetle damage in Florida by. helping" forest landowners reduce the susceptibility of their pine stands to this destructive insect pest. Periodic southern pine beetle outbreaks in Florida have resulted in millions of cu- bic feet of pine timber killed on many thousands of acres. Forest management practices, such as thinning and prescribed burning, can improve the health of pine stands and decrease their likeli- hood of developing southern pine beetle infestations. The ne'w program offers up to 50 percent cost reimbursement for pre-commercial thinning and prescribed burning treatments. and a fixed-rate, per-acre incen- tive payment for landowners .who conduct a first pulp\%ood thinning. The program is limited to 44 northern Florida counties located within the range of the southern pine beetle. Qualified landowners may apply for one approved practice per state fis- cal "year. The minimum tract size requirement is 10 acres and funding requests ma, not exceed $10,000. For an application and more information on program require- merits and procedures, please 'isit \our local Diision of ForestrN office. Frank Grant Disclosure Simply put, Disclosure means that a Seller of Real property must disclose all -'facts which affect the value of that property to potential Buyers. In addition Realtors have the same legal requirement of disclosure. A Seller will fill out a form known as a "Sellers Real Property Disclosure". This form is kept in the office of their Realtor, and is given to prospective Buyers when requested, or once a contract is received. This disclosure goes over everything from where the mailbox is located, to actual issues with the home, such as roof leaks, plumbing leaks, electrical issues, and anything that the Seller has knowledge of that will affect the value of the Property. The Realtor also must inspect the property and point out items they notice which may affect the value of the Property. In addition, when a realtor has knowledge of potential development, or other changes in the area, they must notify both parties as these changes may have an effect on the property's value. - There may be items that the Seller and the Realtor have no knowledge of. I always recommend buyers to have a professional Home Inspection performed. The Home Inspector will go through every nook and cranny in a home to find defects. For a list of Home inspectors in our area, visit my homepage www.willgillespie.net. - Items that are not required to be disclosed, are deaths in the home, whether by natural causes, murder or suicide. The fact that a past owner has AIDS or HIV is not required to be disclosed and the fact that a sexual'predator living in an area is not required to be disclosed. However you can obtain this information by going to the website of your local sheriffs office, or the FDLE website, www.HometownRealtyNF.com X I PRESSURE WASHING, AND PAINTING: Reasonable prices, de- pendable, insured and professional. This. makes a real refreshing dish when the summertime heats up. 68uttermil Sballad 1 large can crushed pineapple , 1W I large package strawberry Jell-o 2 cups buttermilk 1 large container frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 cup chopped pecans Combine pineapple and Jell- o in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, remove and cool. Stir in buttermilk and mix well. Fold in whipped topping and nuts. Pour into glass 9x13 dish and chill until set. I usually make this about four hours before I plan to serve it or the night before. This recipe can be reduced by using a small can of crushed pineapple, regular size of Jell- o, 1 cup buttermilk, regular size of Cool Whip and cup chopped pecans. 'This reduced size recipe will fit in an 8x8 glass dish.' Vater Filtration Lic # CFC0516 WOLFE PLUMBING INC. Haley Announces Intent To Be A Candidate For District 1 School Board (Continued from Page One) with you about your feelings concerning the future of the Gilchrist County School System. If you woujd like to contact me during the day please call 352- 284-0668 or in the evenings at 352-463-2917. Please allow me to serve you on the Gilchrist County School Board, District John Magnusson bids A Sad Farewell To Umpiring (Continued from Page One) at umpires or yell at Deans are not yelling at me as a personal thing. they 're yelling because of Their frustrations of something that's not working out." Mr. M. agnusson, while he may not know it, has been praised, by many in our comnnuniry for hisl manner in handling not only the kids on the field and in the class but also the much more difficult parents. In talking \ ith Mr. Magnus- son he pointed out many simi- larities between being an umpire and being a teacher or dean: for instance, he has found they have about a 20 percent turnover rate with umpires. When asked why he explained, "probably the same thing that gets educators is, you feel a lack of respect through a combination of factors. One is pay, one is every time you pick up the (news) paper you see something negative, 'you don't see, anything good.". You will probably never read how the umpire really did a great job, but you will read about it if the press feels like .they did a poor job. A And in looking at his own posi- tion in umpiring and as the Dean he is perhaps the most hated guy in school and on the field, but he has found a way to make his gift of working with kids and parents at school work for him on the field and visa versa. Both expe- riences help him in other areas of his life and careers. He explained that "this com- munity has been great since I've been here, some of the most ded- icated people I've ever seen are in the Gilchrist County School District." Mr. Magnusson has been with Trenton High School for 4 years now but in the past he taught elementary school for 29 years, and he enjoys children of all ages. When I asked him what the hardest part of his job at school is, his answer could also be the same as an umpire asked the question, "I have to be judge and jury in a lot of discipline cases. And I see the American justice system, the best justice system in the world, struggle with the same task, ... The only thing I can say, is when I leave to go home I feel that I've done the bestjob I can do and I was as fair as I can be." John Magnusson has had an impact on a lot of children and adults over his years in umpir- ing. His greatest pleasure "is when an ex-student or ball player calls you up or comes back to see you to tell you how much you meant to them, now that brings a tear to almost any teachers' eye." I hope you will wish Mr. Magnusson well as he steps off'the field but remember he's not going far from that field. He will do his best to make sure other umpires know as he does, "The world's not fair but you come as close as you can."
