Trash Fire Threatens Residence,

But Saved By Farefighters -

By Cindy Jo Ayers
John and Kim Wheat of 7500
SE 77th Lane were, blessed
Sunday afternoon when their
home was saved-from being
destroyed by fire. Mrs. Wheat
reported that the fire started as a
little trash fire in a trash pit right
beside the residence. She also
said that it was only feet from
their home when it.was stopped.
The family lost a garage/storage
room and a second store) deck to
the blaze.
The Gilchrist County Fire
Rescue along with Trenton and
Fanning Springs Volunteer Fire
Departments responded to the
scene. The Wheats reported 24
.fire fighters were on the scene
to fight the blaze before it was
extinguished. An. estimated
35,000 gallons of water were
sprayed onto the flames before
they were extinguished. The fire
began as the family was burning
trash. The blaze escaped and
jumped to the carport and then
to the garage and storage
facility. "By acting quickly and
professionally nobody was
injured and the residence was
completely saved," reported
Robert E. Willis, Director of
Gilchrist County Public Safety.
"The training, dedication and
teamwork of our volunteer fire

departments saved this home. I
would like to extend my thanks
to all of our volunteer fire
fighters and encourage everyone
in Gilchrist county to show their
appreciation for our local
heroes," Willis added.
Mrs. Wheat explained their
home was saved by God and the
local fire departments that
responded. "They went beyond
the call yesterday. They did an
awesome job and saved my

home." Mrs. Wheat added. She
reported that her family is fine
and their actual home was not
damaged.

five years ago. They originally

Monnye Shelby Brown, such
a charming person, witty and
multi-talented all wrapped in
one, is the .featured "Person-

Character Council of Gilchrist

in Salisbury, North Carolina,
and received her education from
Catawba College and completed
her Master's degree at the Uni-

retired from teaching, and when-
ever called upon, still loves to.
Presently she enjoys gardening,
reading, writing, walking and
finds great pleasure in singing.
She's also an experienced pianist

Monnye finds great satisfaction
in her community work.
When this writer first met
Ms. Monnye, a deep sense of
gratitude was felt. Later on, as
I got to know this wonderful
Southerner lady, I knew that she
had a story to tell about what our
society today is in great need

of, and that is FORGIVENESS.
Monnye grew up in a losing
Christian home. Her parents
encouraged her and her siblings
to always do their best, show
respect to others and always
demonstrate FORGIVENESS
when an offense occurred.
Ms. Brown believes that "life
is too short to live with hate
and misunderstanding" in one's
heart. She feels that FORGIVE-
NESS is a Christian virtue that
everyone should experience in
his or her life. She relates that
even "psychologists have said
that to harbor negative thoughts
is bad for mental and physical
health." In utilizing the charac-
ter trait of FORGIVENESS she
says, that "It is important to un-
derstand why people behave as
they do." And she adds, "This

Katie Quincey Exhibits Grand Champion

Heifer At Suwannee River Fair

By Cindy Jo Ayers
Katie Quincey, 14, of
Trenton Middle FFA exhibited
her 1245 pound heifer in the
Suwannee River Fair's Second
Annual Heifer Show. The
show was held on Saturday
night and Katie's heifer
walked away with the grand
champion award. This is
.Katie's second year showing a
heifer at the fair. Her exhibit
whose name is Exar Winnie is
20 months old and is a black
angus. Katie said that from
time to time Exar has tested
her patience; this heifer has
head butted and kicked her
several times. Katie said, "She
may be a grand champion but
she is definitely not Miss
Congeniality." Katie's father
Steven Hines said that once the
heifer is shown again in April
at the Junior Angus Show it
will be put in the pasture on
the family farm which is
located in the northeast part of
Gilchrist County.
Katie Quincey is not only
gaining valuable experience
,showing heifers but she is also
building her herd. She has
shown and sold pigs at the
Suwannee River Fair for
several years and with those
fair proceeds she is building
her own herd of heifers/cows.
At this time she has seven
cows in her name and with
each new calf her herd will
grow. Exar Winnie will join
this herd when she retires from
the show ring. Exar was
purchased from Express Ranch
in Oklahoma over a year ago.
Fortunately for Katie, Express
Ranch has a scholarship plan:
for students who win with their
cattle. She will receive a.
$500.00 scholarship toward
her college education from

Florida's Low
Income Children
Federal funding from the
U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) is available to Florida
faith-based and community
sponsors to operate feeding
programs for low-income
children this summer. The
federal funds kill reimburse
organizations that operate the
USDA Summer Food Service

When school lunchrooms close
for the summer, a significant
number of children in low-
income Florida communities
could be at risk of hunger or
poor nutrition because free and
reduced price school meals are
not available. USDA's Summer
Food Program is designed to
bridge this summer nutrition
gap. It reimburses organizations
for serving free, nutritious
.breakfasts, lunches or snacks to
Children in eligible' low-income
areas. However, the. program
continues to be under-utilized,
largely due to a lack of willing
operators and feeding sites. Last
tear S.067.535 free meals were
served to low income Florida
children at a USDA summer

of free and reduced price school

John's

Comments
By John M. Ayers
The longer and warmer days
have caused me to break a little
dirt and plant Cindy Jo and Ia
small garden plot.
Back in early February I
began to prepare my ground for
the planting 'of a few red
potatoes. We really enjoy eating
the fresh green beans and new
potatoes in April.
SCindy.Jo and I enjoy eating
fresh asparagus, so I :finally
decided that I would try my
hand at growing some of these
sprouts. As I looked into the
involvement of producing
asparagus, I found out that there
is a.lot more detail to producing
asparagus than planting squash
or green beans.
I planted eight sprouts of
Martha Washington asparagus
in February and I was amazed
last week when one of the hills
had a sprout shooting out the
top of it.
The warm weather and the
vast amount of rain that I have
been producing from the spigot
to the sprinkler, is beginning to
make a difference in the garden.

Until recently I was about to
plant my tomato plants and.
some of my other more tender
plants, but the chance of frost
keeps me from wanting to
possibly plant these all over
again.
My brother-in-law has often
told me that I should ha% e been
a farmer, because I like to ride
the tractor, till the ground, and
play around clearing the woods
and .planting' food plots for
wildlife. He is right. I do enjoy
workingg in the dirt. but the big
difference is that I am not left
hungry if something destroys
the crop.
For the most part I enjoy the
outdoors. Whether it is fishing.
gardening or just mowing the
grass, I can get outdoors and get
away from the phone and enjoy
whatever the task is before me.

And so my fellow Americans:
ask not what your country can
do for you ask what you can
do for your country. My fellow
citizens of the world: ask not.
what America will do for you,
but What together we can do for
the freedom of man.
--John F. Kennedy

Streetwise
By Lauren Rudd

A year ago I discussed FedEx
in light of being an excellent
paradigm.of a company with
little hype and solid fundamental
value. Back then FedEx's share
price.was $97.16. My earnings,
estimate for the company's 2005
fiscal year, which ended on May
31, was $4.80 per share, with a
projected 12 month share price
of $109
Actual earnings came in at
$4.78 and the stock is trading
at $109 for a capital gain of
12.2 percent, plus a dividend
yield of 0.20 percent. Given
the performance of Wall Street
during the past '12months. that
is a reasonable return.
So, where do we go from
here? Is FedEx still a viable
investment and can we look
forward to comparable returns
over the next 12 months?.
To answer that question we
need to -once again analyze
the company's fundamentals.
Let's start with the company 's
guidance going forwTard.
FedEx expects to show third
quarter earnings of between
$1.15 and $1.30 per diluted
.share, while already having.
earned $2.78 per share so far this:
year. FedEx has also increased
its guidance .for FY 2006 to
between $5.45 and $5.70 per
share.
Mean\ while. 16 of the Street's
analysts follow\ the company) and
their consensus for FY 2006 is
$5.79 per share. Unfortunately,
the consensus has been wrong
in two of the past fie quarters.
No, there is no easy answer.
Predictions are always hard,
especially when they are about
the future.
You could sit down and
scrutinize FedEx's9 lOTand 100
reports and develop )our own
forecast While that is the best
method, it is time consuming
and requires some accounting
expertise. So, let's take a short-
cut and look at the company's
intrinsic.value, which we will
calculate in two different ways.
Intrinsic value is not an
estimated share price Supply and
demand determines share price
in the short-term, while actual
financial performance is the
determining factor in the long-
run. Intrinsic value is simply an
estimate of a company's worth at.
a point in time, based on certain
input parameters.. It is also a
reasonable indicator of what we
might expect in the way of share
price performance over the next

We had a big ol' fat stinky
deal at our house last week. At
the ripe old age of nearly 50
John and I thought we had
about experienced it all when
low and behold last week we
had a Whole ner experience. On
Wednesday morning as John-
was walking out of the house
into the garage he noticed that
our 10-year-old German
Shepherd named Bow, was
locked up in a point. In a split
second John realized that Bow
had sighted a black furry
animal. Needless to say John
made a hasty dash:for the ard.
(I gotta tell you I' would ha% e
liked to ha\e been fly on the
wall that morning).
As John made his exit he
.elled at BoW to "stop." I think
ol' Bow thought he said "go"
because he started catching that
skunk. Well, poor ol' Bow and
that stinks intruder had a real
go-around in'our garage. The
skunk sprayed the dog and
garage about three times before
Bow got the best of him. When
the dust cleared ol' Bow was
standing on the concrete pad
just outside the garage with the
dead skunk hanging in his
mouth.
Man, do we have one very'

year or two.
.The first' model uses. a
discounted earnings approach.
which means it calculates the
present \alue of earnings going
forward, assuming a certain
growth iate. 14.5 percent in this
case, and a discount rate of 11
percent, which h is the average
return on the S&P 500. After 10
years the grow th rate is lowered
to 6 percent and the discount
rate is raised to 12 percent. The
answer is $179 per share.
A second approach, and one
that finds greater favor among
both professional investors
and the purists of the academic

fHo\ model This model Melds
an intrinsic value of $131 per
share. Although the latter is a'
somewhat more conservative
approach, both models, indicate
that FedEx's shares still have
plenty of delivery power going
forward. (Both models can be
found on RuddReport.com, I
Finally, my FY 2006 earnings
estimate for FedEx, done ,the
hard way, is $5.72 per share.
Historically, the- shares trade
at about 22. times' earnings.
Therefore, in the next 6 to 12
.months the shares could easily
be trading at about $126 per
share.

The Value Of Taking A Drink
(Kent Heaton)

Alcohol has always been a demon that plagues
man with its sparkle and alluring appeal to the desires
of the flesh. Noah planted a vineyard and "drank of
the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in
his tent" (Genesis 9:21). The children of Israel did
not take long to fall head-long into licentiousness at
Mt. Sinai with their debauchery (Exodus 32). King
David tried to cover his own sin with Bathsheba' by
bringing Uriah home from the war and getting him
drunk; supposing Uriah would go home and sleep.
with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:12,13). David sinned
when he got Uriah drunk (Habakkuk 2:15). King
Elah was killed by Zimri because he was drunk (1
Kings 16:8,10). Countless lives have been destroyed
because of alcohol.
The Lord said in Proverbs 20:1 "Wine is a
mocker, intoxicating drink arouses brawling, and
whoever, is led astray by it is not wise." Alcohol has
an appeal that is only a veneer hiding pain and
sorrow. The wise man suggested that those Who
linger at the wine are not wise. Drinking wine and
intoxicating drink is stupid. The value of drinking
means a person has become very dull in their minds,
insensible, senseless and wanting in understanding.
King Lemuel's mother instructed him that drinking is
not for kings nor princes "lest they drink and forget
the law, and pervert the justice of all the afflicted"
(Proverbs 31:4,5). If you want to die drink
(Proverbs 31:6,7).
The value of drinking is found in the pleasure
afterwards. "So says Jehovah of Hosts, the God of
Israel: Drink and be drunk, and vomit, and fall, and
rise no more ... Make him drunk ... wallow in his
vomit" (Jeremiah 25:27; 48:26). Sounds exciting
don't it,? That is a wonderful picture of a Christian
seeking to let Christ shine in their life. The character

of a child of God does not fit with drinking. We are
commanded to "not be drunk with wine, in which is
excess, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18).
Christians who drink grieve the Holy Spirit (and you
really do not want to grieve the Holy Spirit -
Ephesians 4:30).
Some Christians defend "social drinking" on the
basis that the Lord condemns drunkenness and as
long as they do not get drunk, they are pleasing God.
Drunkenness is a sin and condemned by God
(Galatians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 5:1; Romans 13:13).
Taking a drink of alcohol is not sinful as it can be
used for the "stomach's sake" (1 Timothy 5:23).
Social drinking is not medicinal; it's social. The
reasons given for social drinking will also apply to
social fornication better known as "petting." As
long as I do not commit the act of fornication, I can
do whatever I want? God forbid! "For let fornication
and all uncleanness or covetousness not be once
named among you, as becomes saints ... no
fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous one (who
is an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom
of Christ and of God" (Ephesians 5:3-5).
The value of drinking is rooted in the desires, of
the flesh and these desires make one an enemy of
God (1 John 2:15-17). "They who are in the flesh
cannot please God" (Romans 8:8). Christians walk in
such a manner to "please God" (1 Thessalonians
4:1). The soul that lingers long at the wine, going in
search of mixed wine when it is red and sparkles in
the cup will only find the bite of the serpent, the sting
of the viper among many woes, sorrows, contentions,
complaints and wounds without cause (Proverbs
23:29-35). It is hard enough to fight sin sober; why
do you compromise your soul?

Blue Springs 4-H News

Mr. Vogel
On February 19, 2006, the
Blue Springs 4-H Club held their
monthly meeting at the Trenton
Elementary School. The
meeting was called to. order by
our President; Chris Harding. In
old business we talked about how
much participation we had at the
County Events in January.: Our
club leaders had also purchased
a giant "Congratulations Blue
Springs 4-H Club" cookie from

Sam's to congratulate all who
participated. In new business
we discussed the preparation of
our record books and summary
sheets for the Suwannee River
Fair. When we had adjourned
our meeting we had a visit from'
Mr. Vogel and his son Charlie,
they told us about their trip to
Costa Rica while showing us
a slide show. We saw many
interesting pictures of exotic
birds, trees, frogs, monkeys
and other things. After Mr.
Vogel's visit we had snacks and
beverages and Mr. Vogel let us
hold some snakes he had. Our
next meeting will be held March
25th at the Retirement Horse
Farm.
Special thanks to our club
leaders for the wonderful
congratulations cookie and Mr.
Vogel and Charlie for taking
time to visit us.
Special congratulations to all
the 4-Hers in Gilchrist County.
that participated in County
Events. Greatjob everyone!

Lil' Farmers 4-H Club News

The Lil' Farmers 4-H Club
has been very busy. With all the
excitement of the upcoming fair,
I wanted to catch you up on all of
our happenings. In December we
held our Christmas party at Brett
and Kaylee Crawford's house. It
was great. We sang Christmas
carols, made ornaments and had
a surprise visit from Santa Claus.
He brought gifts for everyone.
Thanks Santa! We're still being
extra nice.
'At our January meeting we
made homemade butter and
biscuits. It was fun. Our arms
were sure tired from all that
shaking' but those biscuits, fresh
butter, and cane syrup sure did
hit the spot. Brett Colson's
grandpa was even there to
make sure we knew how to
make butter. We talked about
our entries in the fair and Brett
Crawford did a little public
speaking for us about his entry

in the Florida State Fair.
In February we met at Austin
and Abbey: Thomas' home.
.Kaylee Crawford and Ashton
Sanchez taught us all about farm
safety. They won first place at
the County Events with their
presentation. We then had lots
of yummy snacks and decorated
Valentine cookies and cards
to take to Ayers Health and
Rehab Center. The residents
enjoyed all the cookies at their
Valentine's Day party. They
really liked reading all the nice
notes from us.
The fair is going to be a busy
time for our club. We hope you,
can come out and watch as we
show our animals, enter our
home economics items and have
a good time. 4-H is a lot of fun!
God bless you.
Respectfull) submitted,

Levy County Quilt'Museum.
We have the fourth quilt in now
and it will be donated to CFE
Co-Op for their annual meeting
in October. We used their con-
ference room for 12 years while,
we were raising money to build
the museum.
We are going to have a yard
and porch sale March 10th and
llth here at the museum. We
have quilt frames, fabric and so
much more. We 'tr to ddothis
once a year and te ftry to get rid
of so much xwe don't need and
hope someone else can use it.
We sell at low prices as so much
is donated to us.
Our new member. Karen Ar-
endell, who drives down from
Live Oak. is doing great with
her hand quilting. She has fin-
ished her two pillo\ tops and %we
started her on a babN quilt. Next
step is to sit down at a quilt and
learn to quilt on a frame.
Appreciation Day is April Ist.
It \ill be an all da\ event and
\we hope to see many out to see
the museum. Many times \hen
\we had moneN donated, \we
\tere told w\e would never build
anything,. much less a museum.
We want people to see that their
money w"as well used as we ha\e
a museum that \we ha\e paid for
as w.e built it. We owe nothing
and \we did this all \without a
grant. It is all paid for.

Is Pre-qualification Importadt?.
- You have found the perfect home
for your family. E .crhing down
to the last detail is perfect.. During
the process of writing your offer,
you learn that there is another offer
coming in from another agent.
Sounds impossible right? Wrong,
In this market, it is not uncommon
for their to be multiple offers on
listings.
- A good way for you to make your
offer look biner, is I., acci:'mpjnr
it with a pre-qualificainon ler
from your bank. A
pre-qualification lets the Seller
know that you are serious about
buying a home. That you have
already been to a bank and you can
qualify for a loan to buy their
home.
- In addition, it is a good idea to
get pre-qualified prior to looking
at homes. This will allow you to
know just how much home you
can afford, and let you .know
where you stand as far as down
payment and other terms are
concerned.
- A pre-qualification is not final
approval. It simply means that
you have applied for a mortgage,
and that you can afford a certain
amount. The Lender will have to
look at the whole package, you and
the home to obtain a final
approval.
- Bottom line, the pre-approval
will set your mind as well as the
sellers mind ,at ease while
negotiating with you.

Bits & Pieces From
The Joyful Heart
.Quilters & Crafters
:Of North Gilchrist
County
I must admit, een though for -
many, many years it \was not so,
:I love having four very differ-
:ent seasons., Each one has its
:own special and unique style of
'beauty. Each one is preceded by
:a kind of breathless anticipation
;of.things to come. And so it is
with spring.
Perhaps, spring more than the'
:other seasons, is so looked for-
w ard to because it is so refresh-
ing. It's warm balmy breezes
still have a crispness about them
'that seems, to sweep the winter
cobwebs from our minds as
'we embrace the soft fragrance
of saucer magnolias, azaleas;
tulips,and all of nature coming
back to life.
; It's. such a joy to open win-
do\o s and doors allowing spring
i dance from room to room.
Her soft voluminous gown:,.
fathers the long gray shadows
of winter in its folds leaving
,each room smelling like newly
laundered linens fresh off the
clothes' line.
On days like these even my,
old bones want to run like a deer,
hop like a rabbit, and kick like a
mule. Of course, if in fact I did
all that, as if I could, my next
move would be two Tylenol and
the heating pad.
But, such was the morning
of Wednesday, March 1st when
21 Joyful Hearts came together
to quilt, craft, crochet, knit, or
whatever one fancied.
Evelyn Wood worked on one
of the club quilts, in a frame,
along with Ann Mangone.
Elaine Nemeth busied herself
with a lovely wall hanging she
has started and poor Madeline
Norman was as busy as a beaver
making more of her yo yos.'
The Swedish weavers-were
in full swing, Bonnie Edwards,
Sylvia Arthur, Jackie Moore,
Mary Lou Ryder, Lu Rowland
and Cathy Strom, all were hold-
ing it together until Miss Alice is
able to be back and hold court.
Our thoughts and prayers are
with her and hopefully she's on
the mend and will be back in our
midst soon. And all God's chil-
dren said Amen.
Ruth Wilkerson has started
crocheting another afghan and
Lera Townsend is learning to
'crochet. You go girl. "I should
know what Martha Foster was
up to but it's not on my list.
Judy Pflueger was knitting or
was it crocheting something soft
'and pink. It was probably for
'hospital babies, she's so good
about doing that.
Alberta Swanner was miss-
Sng from the,"Amen corner" but
Paulene Martin and Ann Taylor
were holding their own. Pat
Luka brought in her January and
'February quilt blocks and they
,are beautiful. Diana Lynn has
her January, February and March
;block finished and they are beau-
tiful as well. Diana spent most
'of her time helping me cut new
backs for my blocks because I
'didn't like the white stitches on
;olive green material. She also
'helped me cut the pieces for my
MIarch block.
Barbara Myrick is caught up
.on her quilt blocks and Barbara
;Strom is still encouraging folks
:to start now, it's not too late.
'Bonnie is thinking of taking her
'up on the offer. Diana will help
'her mom get caught up.
We were missing quite a few
members. I know Rita Simcoe

had a serious illness in the fami-
-ly, Marvine Deer still has a great
deal of pain and Leona Wirta's
brother passed away. We are
keeping them all in our prayers
and hope they will be able to.
come next meeting which will
be Wednesday, March 15th.
'Our' "Make It and Take It" day
on Wednesday, February 22nd,
had 12 Joyful Hearts in atten-
dance. Eel'n Wood showed,
everyone how to make Christ-
mas stockings and little Christ-
mas gift boxes out of Christmas
cards. We ,iIIl put candy canes
in the stockings and candies in
the boxes next Christmas to put
in our Christmas gift bags. It's
ne' er too soon to get started.
Cathy Stiom, Ann Taylor.,
Paulene Martin, Ann Mangone,
Mary Lou Ryder, Evelyn. Wood,
Diana, Lynn, Bonnie Edwards,
Elaine Nemeth, and Ruth Wilk-
erson all looked like Santa's
elves busily getting ready for
next Christmas; Jackie Moore
worked on her S. ,di.'h \ eaj ng i
and Madeline Norniaaifd what?
Yep, made more yo yos.
It was announced that the
drawing for our "Ladies Night
Out" quilt will be held at our
April 5th meeting which is when
we will have our Spring Fling
party. It is one chance per mem-
ber and everyone wants to win it
so we are all more nervous than
the Oscar nominees.
Nine stayed for lunch and
almost everyone ate salad, spa-
ghetti, garlic bread and cake.
Evelyn surprised everyone with
cups of ice cream and boy did
that ever put a smile on every-
one's face.
I guess that's about all the
news for now but I'd like to leave
you with a couple of quilting
tips passed on from Elaine and
Diana. Elaine's.is...never sit on
your quilt while it's on a bed. It
breaks the threads. Diana heard
the following tip on TV...While
many people will tell you to do
it, don't use sheets as backing
for your quilt. It's harder to quilt
because it's woven tighter.
I don't have a quilting tip to
share but. I would like to share
this scripture with you. It seems
most appropriate this time 'of.
the year as we look across our
barren fields, roadsides and
gardens. Hebrews 11:1, "Faith
is being sure of what we hope
for and certain of what we do
not see."
'Til next time,
A Joyful Heart,
Marilyn Runde

For a long, long time, Ms.

"A good name is better to be

she has matured in wisdom and

she appreciates, more so than

Monnie and husband, Bill,.

taught for a few years at Lake

2006, at 6:30 p.m.. the Gilchrist
County Shared Ser ices Net-
work invites )ou to attend the
third annual community forum.
This year the forum will center
on a video presentation by Dr.
Willard Daggett, educational
consultant from the International
Center for Leadership in Educa r
tion. The presentation will dis-
cuss "preparing students for the
future", and how the impact of
globalization and international
competition is changing the
world now, including business,
government, and individuals.
Please contact Deborah Douglas
at 352-463-3248,and advise if
you plan to attend as refresh-
ments will be served.
Did you know that over the
last five years Florida's public
school population has grown by
an average of more than 56,000
students each year? There are
more than 2,609,000 students
in Florida's public schools.
This makes Florida the fourth
largest public school system in
the country. Gilchrist County
has 2,752 students in our public
schools, but we have approxi-
mately 60 new subdivisions in
our county. This makes our dis-
trict ripe for fast growth. We are
trying to prepare now to house
new students as they arrive
in our schools. Construction
costs for new classrooms are
over $150 per square foot. The
cost for a portable classroom is
$42,000 plus setup fees.
Last fall the government of In-
dia launched an education-only
satellite for distance education.
The purpose is to make sure
that Indian students are ready
to compete globally in science,
math, engineering, and other

subjects. The satellite will be
used to connect, by interfacing
with video from each school,
urban and rural educational
institutions throughout India to
provide formal education. The
satellite will enable distance
learning to more remote areas of
the country. India is fast becom-
ing a leading competitor of the
USA in a "flat" world.
The .State of Michigan is con-
sidering requiring students to
take a course requiring "online
instruction" before they gradu-
ate. Michigan would be the
first state to require courses to
be taken by online instruction.

It would become a part of their
high school reform package
which includes additional math,
science, and a foreign language.
Florida's legislature is con-.
sidering passing a law called the
"65% Solution." It would re-
quire school districts to spend a
minimum of 65% of their funds
in direct classroom costs. While
this may sound great, you need
to know that the national group
pushing this law excludes from
the definition "classroom" many
support functions that we deem
essential for our students. For
example, it excludes guidance
counselors, reading coaches,
social workers, and transporta-
tion. We are going to work with
our legislators to make sure the
definition of "classroom" meets
the needs of our district.
The proposed lawsuit by some
school districts and the Florida
School, Boards Association that
would force the state to rec-
ognize co-teaching as, a viable
class size reduction mechanism
has been put on .hold, at least
until the end of the legislative
session and it can be seen if SB
1146 by Senators Jim King and
Steve Wise will pass. This bill
would provide that any teacher
assigned to any classroom must
be included in the calculations to
determine if a classroom meets
class size limits.
The School Board and the
Teachers' Union have not
finished this year's negotiations
at this time. The Board Team has
contacted the Union Leadership
several times to find out when
the) will be ready to return to
the "table," but no certain time
has been set. Several weeks
ago the: Board awarded raises
to employees not in the Union.
The Board and Superintendent
felt like it was unfair for these
employees' raises to be held up
any longer. The Board would
like to complete negotiations as
soon as possible.
The calendar committee has
been. meeting and a 2006-07
calendar proposed. Many of
the suggestions received from
teachers and staff were used.
Thanks to all of you who took
the time to offer suggestions.
Teachers and parents please
don't forget that our students
will be out for Fair Week. March
13-17, and for Spring Break.
April 17-21 .. .... ,.,,
Our students 'Are looking
good. Ms. Janet Bradley, our
high school curriculum director,
reported to the school board
that student participation in our
Career and Technical programs
has vastly increased over last
year. Much of this increase can
be attributed to our, instructors
doing a better job of recruiting
students into their programs.
There has also been an added
emphasis on. opportunities
for our graduates in job-
opportunities that don't require
a four year college degree.
Our. high school reform team
is working to solidify their
recommendation to be carried
to the board for consideration in
the near future. Other districts
are also going through the
same process of trying to make
their curriculum more rigorous
and relevant for students. A
key factor is that all students,
whether they are in a college
prep program or a career prep
program, must be enrolled in
courses that teach them skills that
will make them successful in the
workplace. All students nust be
equally; exposed to rigorous
Classes of math, science, reading
and others. In fact, students
entering a technical field must be
able toread at a higher level than
college, bound students. Our
goal is to make every student a
"life long learner." Students that
have mastered essential learning
skills can easily transition from
one job to another as demanded
by a changing economy.

It is from numberless diverse
acts of courage and belief that
human history is shaped. Each
time a man stands .up for an
ideal, or acts to improve the lot
of others, or strikes out against
injustice, he sends forth a tiny
ripple of hope.
