Bell School Has Successful Evening Of Arts Dinner Theatre Town Of Bell Welcomes Dan Cavanah As New City Manager By Anna Wild Dan Cavanah has been a resident of Bell for the past 10 years and truly loves the people in Gilchrist County. Many of us know Mr. Cavanah because of his Guinness World Record for the most stick horses; others know him as Mr. Dan from Scaffs in Bell. A little over four weeks ago he was appointed to the position. of Bell's Town Manager and has been having a great time since. Changes were needed to compensate for changes in the area so the Town Council created the new position .of Town Manager which is not an elected position. The council felt that it was important to have an individual as the town manager who may stay on long term. The position of Town Clerk is an elected position and Mrs. Deanna Crews did not seek re-election of her position as Town Clerk. Mrs. Patsy Akins-Avery was appointed by the Town Council to oversee this position until the next election. As the Bell Town Manager Mr. Cavanah will direct the administration of the Town government as prescribed by the Mayor and Town Council, Town Codes, and Florida statutes. He will manage and supervise all departments, functions, and offices of the Town to achieve established goals within available resources. His position is part- time with 30 hours per week salary (not eligible for overtime). He will handle all of the many duties that the Town is responsible for such as; occupational license, building permits, property zoning information, rental of the community center, suggestions, complaints, providing leadership and direction in the development and instillation of various plans, maintaining public relations, act as purchasing agent and oversee the bid process, prepare preliminary annual budget, monitor revenues and expenses, ajpd the list goes on and on. Patsy Akins-Avery, Town Clerk and Dan Cavanaugh is the newBell Town Manager.. Mr. Cavanah was approved for: such tasks due to his impressive background. He had worked for Scaffs in Bell for the past 3 years as a manager, for 5 years prior to that he was the general manager of Team in Focus in Lake City, he worked for Tasco Sales as their Director of Operations and was with J. Byrons as distribution director prior to that. So you could say he knows how to manage a business and speak to the public. Mayor Estes is very impressed with Dan's performance, he has come in and reorganized the office and made it look as if he has been here for years. Mr. Cavanah explained that he still has a lot of work to do, "some of the developments were looking at. will streamline how we do things." These developments include implementing the use of "Quick Books" going forward as well as imputing Town data since 2004. Mr. Cavanah will also be working with the North Central Florida Planning Council to help update the Land Development Regulation for the (Continued to Page Eleven) Trenton To Host Luncheon For Farmer's Market Participants The City. of Trenton will be sponsoring a luncheon on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Trenton Community Center located at 214 S.E. 3rd Ave., Trenton. By Anna Wild On Thursday, February 9, 2006, the Bell Middle/High School hosted their second An- nual Evening of the Arts Dinner Theatre. Once again the Bell Elementary School Cafetorium was decorated in lovely Italian Bistro d6cor and the evening was made all the more authentic with the mustaches, hats, and ties of the many waiters who served drinks and deserts throughout the dinner. The meal was exqui- sitely made by Lisa Boutwell, head chef, and her many assis- tants. And the evening's dinner atmosphere was filled with in- strumental music selections and vocal performances while guests dined on lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, salad, breadsticks and yummy deserts. After dinner the crowd was entertained by the performances of the Bell Drama Club. These young people chose "Firsts" to be their evening play and they each took a turn in directing an act. Their performance was. out- standing; it was hard to believe The Drama Club of Bell High School performed for guests during the evening of dinner and theatre Thursday evening. Long time readers of this column may recognize some of the material from prior years. Please bear %\ ith me because the theme is more important today than it was when I first broached the subject over 11 years ago. For the men reading this, what follows might encourage you tolhelp that special lady in your life become more proficient in dealing with the suspender crowd. ' Let us start u ith the hypothesis that every woman needs to establish her ow.n investment portfolio. a portfolio that she manages single handed) using a deep discount brokerage firm. For proof, consider these gruesome statistics. Women, reaching' the age of 65 can expect to live for an additional 25 years. That means they have a better chance of ou li\ ing their financial resources than their male counterparts. r It gets worse. 20 percent of: the female population will never marry. For those that do marry, half will divorce. Within the first: year after a divorce, a woman's income usuallJ drops by an average of 30 percent. Failing divorce. 75 percent of, all married women are eventually widowed. Of those widows who find they are suddenly near the poverty line, 80 percent were doing fine before their husbands died. That is a grim prospect to say the least ,: ,:|, . The good-news, is :hat onc a women ,decies.~to" take control of her financial destiny, the sky is the limit. Yet, even the best of intentions sometimes go astray. For example, statistics indicate that the average woman who saves puts aside about 1.5 percent of her income. That is not enough. I recommend, and most experts agree, that everyone who earns a wage should put aside no less than 10 percent of his or her gross income each year. Do not write to me telling me that you cannot do that, or that it "hurts" too much. I can assure you that spending your golden years at the Golden.Arches will hurt a lot more. Women also have a tendency to invest in safe, insured money market accounts and certificates of deposit. I urge you to reconsider such a course of action. To help my parents, as well as the people of Gilchrist County bet- ter understand some truths about what's happening presently in Afghanistan, I relate to everyone my opinion as follows. I feel. that the Lnited States Forces are doing a lot of good for.the country. The president of Afghanistan sees it and knows it and wants to go forward with the rebuilding. There is still a lot of work to be done, though. Because this country which has been in constant wars and con- flict for 30+ years 'is going to take a while to rebuild it to the way it needs to be. The presence of the Ameri- cans here is highly respected among the elders who have lived through the last 30 years of turmoil. They appreciate everything .that the Americans are doing for them. It is the 3 younger generation that has ne\- 'er seen a Russian or an) other invader kill their family in cold 'blood, that stirs up trouble here. Those are the ones that need to be educated on Afghan historN. SAbout 40}ears ago. this coun- try was -a very excellent place to vacation and is filled' with: all sorts of historical sites: The countryside is \er\ beautiful and green, but war and invasion make for changes. Afghanistan was -one of the largest % heat ex- porters.in the world because of its fertile ground There are also lots of precious stones here that are highly valuablee to any gem collector. Gold and silver is very plentiful here also. I believe that this country has potential to let the past be the past and look toward to the .future and put themselves back on the map. That is where the local elders have their work cut .out for them. The\ know why the U.S. Forces are here. They know the American military, and civilians workers as well, are not invaders of their country, but we are all here to assist them in rebuilding. The biggest threat is impro\ ised"bombs (hat are boili Sin a mud-hut some. here.and placed out at night. One of the reasons that we have been so successful in Afghanistan is the fact that the Green Berets were allowed to do their job in the beginning without interference from the' conventional military staff in Washington.. In the beginning phase of the war here, they knew that they were about to enter into:. an unconventional gorilla war, and the best people' for a job like that is the Special Forces Green Berets. The Berets were able to, win over the hearts and minds of the Northern Alliance and defeat and destroy the Taliban and Al Qaida in less than 100 days with less than 200 Green Berets. Once we get the people to the point that we are not needed as much, the U.S. force strength will be cut just like it was in Bosnia. There are a lot of good things going on that you will not hear or read about though the American syndicated news media. I hope that the readers of this article of mine will come away with a better, understand- ing of the way things. are in. There are many publications and web sites where one can find recipes for an) lifest le they choose. Even though I'm not obese, much less overwhelmingly obese, I'd prefer my catfish filets fried; rather than broiled, baked or fluffed. Along the same liie, I'd much rather have my pot of lima beans or collard greens seasoned with bacon drippings. It's just the Southern way of life, which is reflected in '"Just Southern Cooking." Apparently, Ms. Richards doesn't know that you grewup in an area (Cedar Key) where seafood was plentiful and cooked in a variety of methods. Please continue to provide good southern cooking recipes for your readers. Respectfully submitted, Sherree Pitzarell, Trenton When He Is Nothing. (Kent Heaton) Pride is a malicious beast that fills men with arrogance and self-importance. Self worth is the only motivation that drives their mind with a disdain for others who are less equal. Pride is at the root of every sin as man exalts himself above the will of God. Man fills himself with, self-knowledge and conceit to believe there is no greater being than he is. He may derive his egotism from his accomplishments, his wealth or his knowledge. For all its worth, pride is likened to "clouds and wind without rain" (Proverbs 25:14). The apostle Paul exhorts the brethren in the epistle of Galatians to be mindful of others and to bear the burdens of others (Galatians 6). The prideful man is not concerned about the burdens of others and will not seek to relieve his brother. Paul declares the truth of pride when he writes, "For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself" (Galatians 6:3). Many men think of themselves as "something." As pride lifted up the spirits of early man to follow wickedness (Genesis 6:5) and later to "make us a name" (Genesis 11:4), so men today find the poison apple of deceit filled in the feast of pride. The deception of pride is that man is nothing. "Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? There is more hope of a fool than of him" (Proverbs 26:12). The irony of man's conceit is that he is nothing more than dust on a scale when compared to the Creator (Isaiah 40:15). What would man be without the power of God? Who makes the sun to rise and set it is not in the power of man to direct these affairs (Matthew 5:45). Daniel reminded Belshazzar the king that the Most High God held his breath in His hand (Daniel 5:23). What is man in the sight' of the Lord God of heaven? Man can never see God when he looks at himself. John described the three-fold nature of sin in 1 John 2:16 as being "the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vainglory of life." Eve fell to the vainglory of life when she looked at the fruit and desired to be wise seeking to exalt herself above the will of God (Genesis 3). Men have followed the same path to look at the fruit of this world and believe that wisdom will come in the pursuit of self-conceit. Pride only produces shame (Proverbs 11:2) and brings about contentions (Proverbs 13:10). When man exalts himself, he cannot see the sacrifice of Christ. The greatest tragedy of pride is that it cannot bring a man to accept a crucified Savior (1 Corinthians 1:18-25). Lifting oneself up in pride will not allow us to reach for the towels of humility in washing the feet of others (John 13). Entrance into the kingdom of God can only be given to those who are "poor in spirit" (Matthew 5:3) and who possess the heart of a child (Matthew 18:1-6). Bearing one another's burdens and proving his own work will bring about the proper attitude of humility toward fellow men (Galatians 6:1-10). We must possess the spirit of Christ who "existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself 'taking the form of a servant" (Philippians 2:6,7). Man is nothing without God. Man lilling himself up will be as the Chinese say, "He who stands on a pedestal has no place but to step off." The Lord said it this way: "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before fall" (Proverbs 16:18). I often think back to a simpler time, a memory of easy going summer days on the back porch drink- ing lemonade with family...the laughter would permeate the atmosphere to an almost exhila- rated infectious uncontrollable noise. Or perhaps chasing the evening darkness with mason 'jars for the most fireflies you could catch. Those were the days...and my childhood memo- ries. I want that for my girls, and for the many young people I encounter every day during my job here with Gilchrist'County School Board. The Humane Society Of Gilchrist County Is Your Dog An Excessive Barker? If your dog is an excessive barker, it can result in neighbor- hood disputes, and ybu could be violating an animal control ordinance in your county. Since your dog may be doing most of his barking when you aren't home, then it's a good idea to talk over the problem with .your neighbors. It's normal for dogs to bark from time to time, but if your dog barks a good majority of the time, then you have a problem with your dog and probably your neighbors as well. The first thing you need to do is to determine the reason why your dog barks. Most dogs bark because they are left alone for long periods of time and miss human interaction. Young dogs that are under three years of age will usually bark just to release excess energy. They need lots of interaction with people or an- other dog to play with to satisfy their excess energy. More time spent with your pet will help. Taking your dog for a walk, or a dog training class, can also be enjoyable for you and make your dog a better pet. If your dog barks at people walking by, say "quiet" and interrupt his barking by making a loud noise to distract 'him. A soda can filled with pennies is good for this. Just shake it and usually the dog will stop barking. As soon as your dog stops barking, make sure you say "good dog" or some other spoken communication to let your dog know that you are happy with the quiet. You can even give your dog a treat to reinforce this behavior. So when your dog is quiet make sure you give him lots of attention and praise to reinforce his good be- havior. In addition, it provides information that will help you file an accurate and timely tax return. Questions Most Frequently Asked About Tangible Personal Property Q. What is Tangible Personal Property? A. Tangible Personal .Property is eter>thing ,other than real eltie that lias value by i:'elf It o:uld indiudc things such as 'furniture, fixtures, tools, machinery, household appliances, signs, equipment, leasehold improvements, supplies; leased equipment and any other equipment used in a business or to earn income. Q. Who must file?. A. Anyone in possession of assets on Januanr I who has either a proprietorship, partnership, corporation or is a self-employed agent or contractor, must file each year. Property owners who lease, lend or rent property must also file. Q. Why inust I file a return? A. Florida Statutes 193.052 requires that all tangible personal property be reported each year to the Property Appraiser's.. office. If you receive a return, it's because our office has determined that you may have property to report. If you feel the form is not applicable, return it with an explanation. Either way, the form MUST be returned. Failure to receive a Personal Property Tak. Return (DR-405) does not relieve you of your obligation to file. Q. How can I obtain this form? A. At the beginning of the year a return is mailed to Tangible Personal Property owners. If you do not get one, contact the Property Appraiser's Office. Q. What if I have no assets to report? Do I still have to file a return? A, Yes; if you feel you do not have anything to report, fill out items 1 through 9 on the return, and attach an explanation of why nothing was reported. However, almost all businesses and rental units have some assets to report even if it is only supplies, rented equipment or household goods. ' Q. If I am no longer in business, should I still file the return? A. Yes, if you were not in business on January I of the taxing year, follow this procedure: 1)On your return, indicate the date you went out of business and the manner in which you disposed of your business assets. Remember if you still have the assets, you must file on them. 2) Sign and date the return. 3) Have your signature notarized. 4) Mail the return back to this office. Q. What is an office or field review assessment? A. When a tax return is not filed by April 1 we are required to place an assessment on the property. This assessment represents an estimate based on the value of business with similar equipment and assets. Being assessed does not alleviate your responsibility to file an accurate return. Q. What if I don't agree with the assessed value that appears on the notice of proposed property taxes that I receive in August of each year? A. Call this office or come in and discuss the matter with us. If you have evidence that the appraised value is more than the actual fair market value of your property, we will welcome the opportunity to review all the pertinent facts. Q. What if I buy or sell an existing business during the year - Who is responsible for the taxes? A. The new owner is responsible, however if there is insuffi- cient property to satisfy the taxes due, the owner on January 1 would be responsible for the difference. Most title companies do not do a search of the tangible assets of a business. You should therefore consult your realtor, attorney or closing agent to avoid problems in this area. To inquire for more information about, Tangible Personal Property please contact: Damon C. Leggett Gilchrist County Property Appraiser 112 South Main Street, Room 138 Trenton, Florida 32693 (352) 463-3190 1-800-219-3208 Q. What if I receive more than one tax return? A. All returns must be sent back. If you have more than one location, the assets of each should be listed separately on each return. Q. What if I have old equipment that has been fully depreciated andL written off the books? A. Whether fully depreciated in your accounting records or not, all property still in use or in your possession should be reported. Q. Do I have to report assets that I lease, loan, rent, borrow or are provided in the rent? A. Yes, there is an area on the return specifically for those assets. Even though the assets are assessed to the owner, they must be listed for informational purposes. Q. Is there a minimum value that I do not have to report? A. No, there is no minimum value. A tangible tax return must be filed on all assets by April 1. Q. If I rent my furnished home or condo for a few months, do I have to file a tangible personal property tax return? A. Yes, since rental activity is of an income producing nature, you must file a return which lists your personal property. Items that should be listed include: Draperies, furniture, appliances and any other personal property included in the rental unit. Q. Are there deadlines and penalties? A. P-u- 0 N A Schools Invited To Take Part In Programs Teaching Community Service' While Raising Money To Fight Cancer The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is urging local schools to participate in its 10th Annual Pennies for Patients Program, which teaches children caring, sharing, respect for others and the value of community service while raising money to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The need for cures is critical as Leukemia' causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. During the dates of January 9 through March 31, 2006, stu- dents across Northern Florida are encouraged to collect money including pennies and other spare change; something ev- eryone has, yet nobody misses. The individual school's program will run for three consecutive weeks, chose by the school's program coordinator. The top fund-raising classroom in each school raising a minimum of $300, is awarded a catered lunch of choice, not to exceed $50. In addition to the catered luncheon, schools also have the opportu- nity to be awarded other great incentives such as gift cards. "Pennies for Patients dem- onstrates to children that, their efforts can really make a dif- ference," said Cathy Cherry, Executive Director of the North- ern Florida Chapter. "Last year, 8 million students in more than 16,000 schools acrogs the coun- try raised more than $13 million. In Northern Florida, students raised over $75,000." With the billions of dollars now being spent by these big drug companies to lull us into the idea that their drugs are our best road to health, and demanding San ever increasing percentage of our incomes, we feel there is a great need to provide "natural", "herbal", "at home" and "holis- tic" treatments and products that have been evaluated and shown to be safe ard effective by lead- ing dermatologists. Four additional wildlife man- agement areas have added "fam- ily hunts" to their list of hunting opportunities for next season. Those areas are Andrews and Devil's Hammock, both in Levy County, in the North Central Region; Dinner Island Ranch, in Hendry County, in the South Region; and Lafayette Creek, a new area in Walton County, in the Northwest Region. The family hunt format is a weekend hunt, intended to provide mentoring adults and youths with exclusive opportu- nities to hunt together on public lands. One adult and up to two youths can take part in these opportunities by obtaining a no- cost family quota hunt permit. To participate, youths must be between the ages of 8 and 15, and adults must be over 18 years old. Youths must hunt under the supervision of the adult, and adults may only hunt in the pres- ence of at least one youth. There will be a total of five wildlife management areas of- fering family hunts next season, including Matanzas, in St. Johns County, in the Northeast Region, which ran the successful pilot program last year. "The Commission recog- nizes the importance of passing down the hunting tradition," quota hunt coordinator Eddie White said. "We are making a concerted effort to expand and maximize these opportunities across the state." To apply for these fam- ily hunts, interested parties must submit applications June 20 July 7 at any license agent, county tax collector's office, or online at MvFWC.com/license. Again, I believe that you will find based upon my experience in the practice of law that I possess the qualifications necessary for consistent, faithful and impartial performance of the duties of this important office. Thank you very much for your- consideration, help and support. Sincerely and Respectfully, David Miller (Duke) Lang A Letter To The Editor Although a formal war has not been declared, the casualties are mounting and it is time to quit pretending there is no cofiflict.. Where and when was the pro- verbial first shot fired you may ask? Well individuals involved in the vocational programs of the Gilchrist County schools are not sure, but one thing is certain, vocational programs no longer have a good relationship with the superintendent's office,.and are losing enrollment. The latest strike came to the Bell and Trenton Ag depart- ments over vacant land they had used for parking cars these last ten years. The Gilchrist County Commissioners previ- ously owned the vacant land and had allowed Bell and Trenton Ag departments use of the property. The land traded ownership to the' Gilchrist County School Board, and before the school board could meet to make known the plans for the vacant lAnd or get any input from the users of the land, specifically Bell and Trenton Ag Departments and the Sheriff's Office, the property was plowed, planted in pines, and fenced. What is up with that you have to ask? Was it the goal of the School Board to disrupt the workings of the Chapters and the Sheriff's Office? Prob- ably not, it was more likely a spiteful act preformed by Su- perintendent Vickers because His plans for the property did not prevail. Why are vocational programs such a sullied concept in Gilchrist County suddenly? When the State has asked each County to tell them what they (the county) would do.if the State gave specific funds to be used in vocational programs? Obviously, the State :believes. -the vocational programs are of value. Individuals also felt let down by the School Board members. Board members need to stop making excuses for how things have become and get some backbone and be what they once were. The community is yearning for your return to ac- tion, pro-action; your ideas have long been supported in the now suffering vocational programs. Your involvement is essential to programs (health, business, mechanics, agriculture and drafting) your actions will make the difference. There are a lot of people out there that want to talk to you about the troubles in our programs: there are a lot of people who still ha\e confidence in you, it just seems to have slipped. I will see you at the next scheduled meeting. where I will silently take any rebut. 'There is no way Iwould write this and not look each of you in the eye. I also realize that as we have expectations of you, you should e.\pect us to be involved and not just sound off in some article. D' oug Craw ford, Treriton SSales Dept. I am a Gilchrist County resident. I have traveled north, south, east and west from shore to shore. I have also traveled to Hawaii and Europe. I have eaten in some very fancy restaurants who served some of the finest foods available. I have also eaten in some real "dives." In both types of restaurants, I found food that was beyond compare and food that I would not recommend tb anyone! While I can understand that we are looking toward lower-fat cooking in America, I believe the food column is more about the "story" of the food rather than the food and recipe itself. 'This is, after all, a small town newspaper and we can take that liberty and isn't it wonderful that we have that freedom! While I have eaten all over the world, my favorite place and food was when I put my feet at my Mama's table where she ser ed grits, s% amp cabbage and' fried mullet (fresh, not frozen). Tern Andrews Bell A Letter To The Editor I was shocked that you chose to print such tripe and equally shocked at the ignorance demonstrated by the writer, one "Gloria B. Richards of Bell." First and foremost we should point out to Ms. Richards that the title of the column is "JUST SOUTHERN COOKING," not how they cook somewhere else. Ms. Richards also rudely' casts dispersions on the column editor's alleged lack of world travel as though:this were some .requirement for writing about Just Southern Cooking. Well I have traveled' widely including to all the continents and US States. Most everywhere I have traveled and lived, I have eaten the local delicacies and have strong opinions for and against such things as caviar in Russia and camel-hock stew in Tunisia, but when I:see a column in a small local. Florida count\ newspaper titled as this one is, I don't expect to read, nor do I e\ en care to read about how they do it somewhere else. Perhaps you see by no%% that I am sick and tired of hearing "we just don't do it like this back where I came from." or "they don't, live like this in :- --_ (any northern state ." Well, Ms. Richards, please help us poor fat country folk in Gilchrist County by keeping your silence...that way we won't be so disturbed on how we could get away with wringing your neck like a chicken about to be fried. Dix Stephens A Letter To The Editor What Are We Really Doing To Ourselves? Do you remember that day when you were' behind that per- son in line or on the road, or on the phone feeling that the person is holding you up for some rea- son or. another and taking up ,your time? How\ dare the\? Just maybe if they could just move' a little faster; we all have been that \wa sometime in our life, if not like that \way today and every da). We know that we are not a bad person and we all want to be treated kindly So why do ve all continue to treat each other in the way we do? We all make mistakes so N\ h is it so hard t . be nice to others? Who kno s. but we can do something about it. Let's make ourselves proud. The production was comical and a real joy to watch. 'The Dinner Theatre is' a'maj0r fund raising event for.the Band Boosters and Drama Club and pro\ ides much needed funds for the Arts Programs. Debbie Nor- ton-Aronowicz, Band Boosters President, was happy to see over 375 people come out and sup-; port the Arts.- Donations were collected from area businesses to hold the event and over 150 tickets were sold in advance.. This- year's final tally has not yet been determined but Debbie Norton-Aronowicz was happy to say they had a larger turn out than last ear and this ear they sold ad space in their program and also had sponsors for the event. Debbie wanted to thank everyone for all their hard work, and a special thank % ou to David (Boosters VP), Penny, and Allen Aderholt for helping with the decorations. Thank you Rhonda Spears, Boosters Secretary,. for your work on the program and Rick Reed, Assistant Principal at BHS, for managing the audio .at the event. And a big thanks to everyone who came out to sup- port the Arts Programs. "Seeds Of Hope" To Rebuild Agricultural Education and FFA Programs In Hurricane-Ravaged Gulf States National FFA President Jackie Mundt recently an- nounced that a fund-raising ef- fort, "Seeds of Hope" to rebuild agricultural education and FFA programs in the Gulf states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Ala- bama and Florida hit hard by Hurricane Katrina has been im- plemented. Details can be found on the National FFA Or- ganization web site: www.FFA.org. Partnering with Team Ag Ed, including the National Associa- tion of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) and the National 'Council for Agricultural Educa- tion, FFA will use "Seeds of Hope" to fund a sustained, long- term rebuilding effort to put agricultural education programs and FFA chapters back on their feet in the shortest time possi- ble. Currently, an estimated 120 FFA chapters and schools, 5,000 students and their fami- lies, and about 150 agricultural education teachers have experi- enced severe damage or total destruction to their homes, fa- cilities and school projects, in- cluding human and personal property loss. "The National FFA Organiza- tion and agricultural education community are mobilizing relief efforts across the nation to help our people along the Gulf Coast, and we have seen a marvelous outpouring of generosity, initia- tive and assistance," said Dr. Larry D. Case, national FFA advisor.. "We want to fast- forward to the future through a sustained effort to rebuild our programs and restore educa- tional opportunities to students." Ini issuing the. call. to FFA chapters for the rebuilding cam- paign, Mundt asked them to bring funds raised to the 78" National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky October 26'h through 29f;. There, they will be entered on the "Seeds of Hope List of Heroes" support- ing the Ag Ed/FFA hurricane rebuilding effort. The final tally will be announced at the end of the convention on Saturday, October 29th. "This year's theme for the convention is 'Living to Serve,' and we expect the Seeds of Hope campaign, to be the most critical service activity of the year," said Doug Loudenslager, national FFA Chief operating officer. In a letter written sent to the National FFA, agri-sciehce teacher J. Wesley Graham from Purvis High School in Southern Lamar County, Mississippi, provided qne example of the hurricane's impact on agricul- tural. education and FFA pro- grams: "We were greatly affected. My agriculture 'classroom and shop were -destroyed. Our fish hut making area was in the shop. The school officials are saying that xve may start back in October, but no one knows. Tuesday after the storm passed, I made it to the shop and just stood there in disbelief. All that we had worked so hard to build in the three years I have taught was gone. Students were very upset. We found our FFA ban- ner and the scrapbook and laid them out to dry. Now all we can do is move on and try to put this behind us. Students are in the community helping they have to! We live in rural area of South Mississippi. and with all the national media outlets focusing on New Orleans, we are scrounging for help. We will rebuild, we will survive, but the images of destruction that Katriia brought to Purvis and Southern Lamar County Mississippi are etched in our memory forever. The ironic thing about this deal is the pre- vious Thursday Purvis hosted the Pearl River Federation meet- ing:. for the first time and the students, parents and myself had spent the, week cleaning and preparing for our guests. We had about 80 students and 18 advisors present, and all had a great time. We even barbecued after the meeting. Oh well, don't count us out, though - we will be back!" FFA is a national youth orga- nization of 476,732 student members preparing for .leader- ship and careers in the science, business and technology of ag- riculture with 7,223 local chap- ters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.. FFA strives to make a positive dif- ference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Con- stitution, are .worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy an- cestors: They purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, en- lightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a strug- gle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and de-( signing men. -Samuel Adams I Order Your I RUBBER I STAMPS I at the I Gilchrist I County Journal I 207 North Main I Trenton 1 463-7135 I ----- Ui.ai --- 4WD Duramax Diesel #1065 #. 1061 #1027 #1 024 #895 1021x 15,188' 66,088* $8,688* 25,088 '27,588' 635,288 O:VER 60 TRUCKS IN STOCK...
