The Dixie County Soil & Water Conservation District sponsored the event this year. After checking in the teams traveled down the road to the Oak Grove Dairy where members would test their skills at reading the soils permeability, drainage capabilities, texture, and determine whether or not there had been any erosion. Alfred Jones from Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) noted that these contests are, conducted to .give these "Future Farmers of America" (FFA) the knowledge of what type. of land they may purchase in the future. It also gives them a history of past weather conditions such as drought and flooding in the area. 'Helping with the grading and scoring were members front the Gilchrst and Cross City Div-ision of Forestry, County E\tension Agents, and the NRCS. Once everyone had their fill of BBQ, Paul Ridaught, Dixie Soil & Water Conservation Chairman, started off the awards portion of the event by recognizing two special people, Ron Piechocki of Oak Grove Dairy and Tommy Jones of the Suwannee River Resource Conservation & Development for all their help with the contest. Then, for the moment they had all been' waiting for, announcement of the winners. Each county had a Jr. and Sr. Division as well as a High Individual winner. Unfortunately there were no teams from Dixie County's FFA programs this year. The Dixie Soil & Water Conservation would like to thank the following for their generous donations. Without them pitching in the lunch provided would not have been possible. They are Oak Grove Dairy, Anderson, Columbia, Project IMPACT Gilchrist County School Board and Lancaster Development Youth Center are partnering together in an effort to bring students at the Gilchrist County Alternative School mentoring and life changing ideas. January 24, 2006 was the introductory meeting that gave the mentors an opportunity to see the classrooms,, learn about the Alternative School Program and meet the students. Each mentor was given an opportunity to share a brief summary about themselves and their reasons for wanting to be involved with these students. There will be two groups 'of mentors coming on alternating Tuesdays to mentor these students. Mr. Whitaker, assistant principal for Trenton High School, welcomed the mentors and expressed the school's gratitude for their .commitment and involvement. Mr. Rawlings, director of the Gilchrist County Alternative School, shared with the mentors the history of the Alternative School Program and how it functions within the main school system. Mentoring in the State of Florida has benefited many students as part of the Mentoring Initiative created in 1999 by Governor Jeb Bush with' the motto: Think. Care. Mentor. Mentoring continues to provide the necessary tools to many students throughout the state that are involved in programs such as Teen Trendsetters and Take Stock In Children. Mentoring is a vital part of anyone's life. More people fail in life for lack of encouragement than for any other reason. Can you remember adults who paid attention to you, who believed in you, and who guided you during your childhood? Those individual's were mentors. This mentoring program was initiated through funds provided by the Department of Juvenile Justice. "We expect our students here in Gilchrist County to succeed because we believe ALL students have potential that can be discovered and developed," commented Deborah Douglas, Student/ Career Development Assistant and Mentor Coordinator for Gilchrist County School Board. It is great to see the people, that often times work in the background who never receive the thanks they deserve, finally receive the appreciation. Chamber President Julie Thomas and her Board of Directors have really put together a great year after Maureen Gentry came aboard as Executive Director. The banquet has taken on a new look and many of the new business people coming-into the county have joined the organization and attended the' banquet last week. It is good to see these. new folks getting involved in' the chamber of commerce. Circumcision Proves The Necessity (Kent Heaton) The apostle Paul appeals to the "saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse" to discharge the philosophies of men and embrace Him who has the preeminence in all things (Colossians 1). The church at Colosse had been, troubled by the teachings of men that distracted from the glory of the church and pure teaching of the Savior. Paul seeks to admonish the brethren to maintain their faith in Jesus Christ in writing, "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God" (Colossians 3:1-3). Paul reminds them of their obedience to the gospel of Christ in the use of the remembrance of their being raised with Christ and the death experienced in that raising. He wants them to keep their focus on the one who sits on the right hand of God establishing the preeminence of Christ in their lives and removing the shackles of this earth from their minds. The apostle had earlier shown how this "raising" took place and when. "In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses" (Colossians 2:11-13). Most religious people today deny the necessity of baptism. Modem preachers delude the masses into SG aa1AeC~z2/J C~o~~o4tK*~IaN4PG Streetwise By Lauren Rudd This week marks a major change in the way in which I talk about companies and their, future going forward.- For the past several years I have been providing an intrinsic value based on a discounted stream of earnings, in addition to. my earnings estimate for the upcoming 12 months. Both methodologies provide an insight to 'a company's potential, are easily, understood, and the ,intrinsic value calculation can be duplicated by readers and the parameters changed if so desired. The difficulty with using earnings is that companies have considerable leeway in how they calculate their numbers. As a result, the consensus of opinion is that a discounted cash flow (DCF) model is a more accurate methodology to use, although it is also more complicated mathematically. However, I recently came across Valuepro, an easy to use program developed by three university professors. Valuepro is a DCF model using free, cash flow to calculate intrinsic value. Details of the program, and instructions on obtaining a copy, will be available soon at SRuddReport.com . For those who do not wish to run the -model themselves, you can.rest assured that I will always provide the DCF intrinsic value ,for every 'company discussed here. Therefore, we. will have two distinct intrinsic' values, along with an earnings estimate, with which to gauge the potential performance of a company's shares. Paul establishes firmly in the book of Colossians the necessity of baptism as clearly as the necessity of circumcision commanded by God in an earlier time. The covenant of circumcision was given to Abraham in Genesis 17. "And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant between me and you" (Genesis 17:11). Circumcision was established in the Law of Moses (Leviticus 12). This was a fleshly circumcision. Under the Law of Christ, circumcision would be a spiritual act- "without hands." Imagine someone in the days of Moses preaching that circumcision was not necessary for salvation. Paul told the' church at Colosse that the "circumcision made without hands" was not the putting off of a fleshly foreskin but the "putting off the body'of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ" being buried in baptism! The covenant of God is established through baptism and without this covenant there is no salvation. Paul also reminded the brethren they had died for Christ. Where does this death take place? Did they die in the Lord when they accepted Christ as their personal Savior? No! Their death took place in the waters of baptism. "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:3-4). Colossians 3:1-3 shows the necessity of baptism. Have you been raised with Christ? Trenton Church of Christ 463-3793 502 Northeast 7th Street Trenton, Florida 32693 Please Visit www.trentonchurchofchrist.com Email kerux@bellsouth.net By Cindy Jo / Last week while frying shrimp for my boys; John and J., I had a flashback to a simpler time in life, way back in the 70s. As I stood over my old cast iron frying pan watching the shrimp turn golden brown in the bubbling oil my mind wandered back to my high school years while .living in Cedar Key. My .first real job was at Castell's Restaurant on the Dock where I worked for the former Barbara Jean Castell along ith her very colorful kitchen staff. Needless to say I learned a lot about cooking seafood and even more about life. My job title at age 16 was Salad Maker I must have made thousands of Palm Salads while working at the restaurant. Before the restaurant got busy each night I would slip into, the kitchen and hang out fourth, quarter numbers were slihhtlh less than the Street had hoped for, despite the bank's excellent performance over the past several years. A year ago I \ rote that my FY 2005 earnings estimate for Bank of America (BoA) was. $4.20 per share. The price of the stock back then xas $44.97. The.bank recently reported 2005 earnings of $4.21, excluding one time merger and restructuring charges of 6 cents per share. So I was a penny under. However, fourth-quarter net income was 93 cents per share, versus 94 cents a year ago. The profit, decline was the first since the third quarter of 2001. For 2006. the Bank expects earnings per share to increase percentage wise by a low- to mid-single- digit. Now let's see if we can determine BoA's underlying strength. Calculating the intrinsic value using the discotinted earnings approach, with an initial earnings number of'16.89'billion andian earnings gro\ th rate of '6.67 percent, yields an intrinsic per share value of $59.05. Using the discounted' free cash flow' model \ ith the same earnings growth rate, a weighted average cost of capital of 6.98 percent; and an equity, risk premium of 3 percent, yields an intrinsic value of $58.85. As you can see the two results are close. My earnings estimate for fiscal 2006 is $4.50 per share. Assuming the current trailing. 12-month P/E ratio remains unchanged at 10.5; BoA should be trading right around $47 per share. With a recent closing price of $44, that represents a potential 12-month gain of 6.8 percent. However, there is a kicker. BoA's dividend yield is currently 4.5 percent, which means the potential total 12-month return on the stock is 11.3 percent You can write to financial columnist Lauren Rudd at 5 Gulf Manor Drive, Venice, Fl. 34285 or email at LVERudd@aol.com. Prior columns are available at RuddReport.com. with the cooks. Man, what an education I received in that kitchen...Thank goodness those walls can't talk. I would peel shrimp or slice lemons, but mostly I listened to the latest news aka gossip. Those women were so good to me. The late Janie Robinson and Ma Helen (Kirkland) took me under their wing. Once the cooks realized I had an interest in cooking they started teaching me how to cook seafood. The former Nanc\ Braswell, while explaining the particulars of inaking a good pot of clam chowder, told me to never serve it the same day it's made. Nancy explained that chowder needs to spend the night in the cooler to let the. ,flavors. come together, before it's served. To this day I still fry shrimp like they did at the restaurant. Nanc\ would beat a couple of raw eggs with about 1 cups of water. Then add Worcestershire Sauce and lemon juice, she added a couple of teaspoons of each. They would dip' the shrimp in. this mixture before rolling them in cracker crumbs. In those-days they used Lance's Captain Wafer crumbs to bread the shrimp in. Last week I found Maitha White Cracker Crumbs which were .pretty., good. Nancy's advice on frying shrimp was to never over-bread or overcook them. If I happen to have good scallops fresh from the Gulf during the summer months I' will go the extra mile when frying them. I have been known to unwrap individual Captain Wafers@ packs and put them in the food processor with the knife blade, then chop them to smithereens. Fresh scallops are one of my .family's favorites and unwrapping Captain Wafers@ ,to make crumbs doesn't'" '. Ir like too much tioublei-6.e\.C rCone to think of it, I enjoy shelling peas too. I guess this. just proves how obsessive I am about good food. The shrimp that I cooked last week came from Neeley Shrimp Company out of Horseshoe Beach. The Neeley's shrimp were great and we really enjoyed them. Ms, Neeley said they were caught fresh from the Gulf the same week we received them. She de-heads the shrimp and freezes them before she Sells them. I'm all about eating wild shrimp no matter if they come from the Gulf or the Atlantic.. Shrimper's, like fishermen, will be out of business if we don't buy wild shrimp from the coasts of Florida and Georgia. Those foreign farm-raised shrimp just can't compare with our fresh wild shrimp. The farm-raised shrimp may be less expensive but they just don't have any flavor, it's true you get what you pay for. In case you are interested Neeley's Shrimp can be reached at 352-498-3546. Judge Edward Philman Announces Candidacy For Re-Election (Continued from Page One) Baptist Church. SMy goal,,is,,to continue sprv- ing ou as Count\ Judge and Ii believe that I have the qualifica- tions, education-and experience you expect of a Judge I sincerely request, and will appreciate your support in re- electing me as your Gilchrist County Judge. Edward (Ed) Philman Letter To The Editor I attended the Board of Ad- justment meeting on January 17, 2006. For those interested, the Board of Adjustment (your county commissioners) ap- proved the Special Exception being requested by a .property owner in a subdivision to allow dump trucks to be stored and parked on his property. This business is now allowed to house 6 dump trucks and 5 other heavy vehicles and begin work at 5:30 am Monday through Sat- urday. This is a "forever" deal. There is no time limit on this Exception. What a sad day for the neigh- borhood. I applaud those neigh- bors who attended the Planing and Zoning meeting and/or the Board of Adjustment meeting and explained their reasons for being, against this exception: declining property values, de- terioration of roads, noise, dust, traffic, and ground and air pol- lution from gas and oil. Their concerns were dismissed at both meetings. In this case (and probably oth- ers in this county), this property owner started out with one or two trucks, lived on the prop- erty, and the neighbors tolerated the business: Then, over two or three years the owner tripled the numbers of trucks, moved off the property, and the business became ,a real nuisance in the neighborhood causing daily, clearly\ un.'.anted agrm.aation to man\. not to mention real dollar .property value losses. When finally neighborhood voices could' be heard, your Board of Adjutment members ignored those voices, the time in the County Comprehensive Plan, ana then.L'nd ti elo'pment regulation,. These t.:.lks really\ rnmis.ed'theioatu on this one We would all like the Board to tell us how this exception is "com- patible with adjacent properties" and "promotes the general wel'- fare" of the neighborhood. A comment by one of the County Commissioners at the end of the meeting, speaking about the property owner, was inappropriate. something to the effect that "this poor boy made good, pulled himself up and grew a business." Well, most people are poor starting out, and "make good", but not at the expense of their neighbors. Maybe it's who you know in this' county. I hope people looking to live in Gilchrist County .take heed, really look at the neighborhood they're going to move in to: and gauge the activities of neighbors as far as business development allowed. Chances are, once a "blight" there, always a blight there. Don't look to the county for help when things turn bad. Elnora Unum In Regard To The Tyler Creek Business Community A few points to ponder, regarding last week's article in John's Comments about the Tyler Creek Business Community. I agree with John that Gilchrist County needs an Industrial-Commercial business park, and that it needs to be engineered to protect our environment. Concerning the adjoining wetlands, guidelines established by our Land Development Regulations are used to ensure the protection of the wetland area adjoining Tyler Creek. These include establishing the wetland area by Dr. David W. Hall, PH.D., an Environmental Consultant and Forensic Botanist, design and engineering by Causseaux and Ellington Inc., and review and approval of the design by the Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD). The flooding that occurred in 2004 established new high water elevations throughout our community, and a low area on my property was flooded, but most was not. The Gilchrist County road department and a neighbor (Billy and Pat Rogers) used it for access to Tyler grade during this time. I consider the new elevations beneficial for the development of Tyler Creek. If a business constructed in Tyler Creek is flooded it will mean there is nearly 2 feet of water in the Trenton Post Office. Commissioners agree it is a priority to have an industrial-commercial business park, and this is number four on a list established by the Commissioners for Gilchrist County's Community Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). It is my desire to'create a business community that will attract a number of small businesses to provide needed services for our area, while providing jobs, economic growth, and an increased tax base with less demand for county services. These businesses will include craftsman, storage/warehouses, distribution, light manufacturing, and service providers. I didn't consider myself "Pleading with the commission to approve the preliminary plat", but rather appealing to them to follow the recommendations of staff and county attorney in their decision. It is common practice to approve preliminary plats with contingencies to be completed before the final plat. I want my fellow board members to feel comfortable with their decision, and I accept the process needed to achieve that level of approval. Please stop by and welcome this lovely lady. A dear friend gave me three new books for Bell Library. I am reading one of these, Bear Hugs written by Ginny McBlain. The two other books by the same author are Solemn Vows and Faith Hope and Charity. In Bear Hugs, a mother called a television performer who did a children's program and asked him to make a special tape commanding her son, Jamie, to wake up from the coma he was in caused by a car accident when his father was killed. Bidwell Bear was his stage name and all the children loved him and would not miss his program for any reason. His personal tape to Jamie worked but. his mother joined her son as a fan of Bidwell's. -Read the novel to see if he ever meets this newest member of his fan club. For the beginning reader we recommend Carmichael'sa Book of Nursery Rhymes as a book of catchy little rhymes you will remember and come to love. We are pleased to tell you, patrons are beginning to make .pledges to the building fund to help us enlarge our space at Bell Library. This is why it is so important not to use sinkholes as dump sites, and why we need to clean up this sinkhole that is so close to the. above mentioned water resources Along with Current Problems, other partners in this endeavor include Alachua County, Gilchrist County, Karst Environmental, CCDA, and. The attached information said that for the Lakota (Sioux) people, the star is a sign of hope and honor. It is a symbol, of the gathering together as one people. A "Star" quilt is given to honor someone that the giver respects. Each piece of the quilt is the work of human hands and 'hearts, but when joined togeth- er, the pieces become a new gift that celebrates all people in the spirit of God. Today, star quilts are one'of the most valued gifts of the Lakota and to receive one is a cherished honor. I wanted to share this with you because I believe that as quilters the energy of our love for one another, our friendship, our.caring, goes into each stitch we make. One who sleeps under. such a quilt is twice blessed. Once, by the beauty, second and most imporiantl, b\ the love from the hands and hearts that gave birth to it. Cost for Sanchez Kicks Field Goal To Give The Black Team A 9-8 Victory The Trenton High School Annual Alumni football game drew an interesting group of former Tigers and friends Saturday night to Tiger Stadium. In a rocking four quarters of play, Daryl Sanchez, a 2005 graduate,, gave the Black Team a 9-8 victory when he kicked a 27-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter. The Orange Team took an early lead as quarterback Scott Guthrie threw a 60-yard pass to Marty Malloy for a touchdown. This pass was tipped by' a Black Team defender, but Malloy grabbed the ball for the first score of the game. Neil Pollock gave':the Orange, Team an 8-0 lead when he dashed into the end zone on a conversion run. The black team came fighting back as they recovered an even team.fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Their extra-point conversion. attempt failed as the Orange Team held an 8-6 lead into the final quarter. The two teams played hard but the shortage of plaN ers on each 'team took their toll on these former stars. . I have missed a few meetings because of health issues. Today though,, that is not the point. Several of our officers have resigned for various reasons. Some are probably legitimate and some are hurt egos or disagreement with another officer. I only have one answer for each and every member: For GOD and country we associate ourselves together for the following purposes: To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our association in the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracies of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness. There shall be no form or class of membership except an active membership. All the members sacrificed so that we ALL can be free. We must all function as a united organization for the purposes stated above. We owe it to our community, our state and our nation. In addition, it provides information that will help you file an accurate and timely tax return. Questions Most Frequently Asked About Tangible Personal Property Q. What is Tangible Personal Property? SA. Tangible Personal Property is everything other than real estate that has value by itself. It would include things such as furniture, fixtures, tools, machinery, household appliances, sighs, equipment, .leasehold, improvements, supplies, leased equipment and any other equipment used in a business or to earn income. Q. Who must file? A. Anyone in possession of assets on January 1 who has either a proprietorship, partnership, corporation or is a self-employed agent or contractor, must file each year. Property owners who lease, lend or rent property must also file. Q. Why must I file a return? A. Florida Statutes 193.052 requires that all tangible personal property be reported each year to the Property Appraiser's office. If you receive a return, it's because our office has determined that you may have property to report. If you, feel the form is not applicable, return it with an explanation. Either way, the form MUST be returned. Failure to receive a Personal Property Tax Return (DR-405) does not relieve you of your obligation to file. Q. How can I obtain this form? A. At the beginning of the year a return is mailed to Tangible Personal Property owners. If you do not get one, contact the Property Appraiser's Office. Q. What if I have no assets to report? Do I still have to file a return? A.. Yes, if you feel you do not have anything to report, fill out items I through 9 on the return, and attach an explanation of why nothing was reported. However, almost all businesses and rental units have some assets to report even if it is only supplies, rented equipment or household goods. ' Q. If I am no longer in business, should I still file the return? A. Yes, if you were not in business on January 1 of the taxing year, follow this procedure: 1) On your return, indicate the date you went out of business and the manner in which you disposed of your business assets. Remember if you still have the assets, you must file on them. 2) Sign and date the return. 3) Have your signature notarized. 4) Mail the return back to this office. Q. What is an office or field review assessment? A. When a tax return is not filed by April 1 we are required to place an assessment on the property. This assessment represents an estimate based on the value of business with similar equipment and assets. Being assessed does not alleviate your responsibility to file an accurate return. Q. What if I don't agree with the assessed value that appears on the notice of proposed property taxes that I receive in August of each year? A. Call this office or come in and discuss the matter with us. If you have evidence that the appraised value is more than the actual fair market value of your property, we will welcome the opportunity to review all the pertinent facts. Q. What if I buy or sell an existing business during the year - Who is responsible for the taxes? A. The new owner is responsible, however if there is insuffi- cient property to satisfy the taxes due, the owner on January 1 would be responsible for the difference. Most title companies do not do a search of the tangible assets of a business. You should therefore consult your realtor, attorney or closing agent K to avoid problems in this area. To inquire for more information about Tangible Personal Property please contact: Damon C. Leggett Gilchrist County Property Appraiser 112 South Main Street, Room 138 Trenton, Florida 32693 (352) 463-3190 1-800-219-3208 Q. What if I receive more than one tax return? A. All returns must be sent back. If you have more than one location, the.assets of each should be listed separately on each return. Q. What if I have old equipment that has been fully depreciated and written off the books? A. Whether fully depreciated in your accounting records or not, all property still in use or in your possession should be reported. Q. Do I have to report assets that I lease, loan, rent, borrow or are provided in the rent? A. Yes, there is an area on the return specifically for those assets. Even though the assets are assessed to the owner, they must be listed for informational purposes. Q. Is there a minimum value that I do not have to report? A. No, there is no minimum value. A tangible tax return must be filed on all assets by April 1. Q. If I rent my furnished home or condo for a few months, do I have to file a tangible personal property tax return? A. Yes, since rental activity is of an income producing nature, you must file a return which lists your personal property. Items that should be listed include: Draperies, furniture, appliances and any other personal property included in the rental unit. Q. Are there deadlines and penalties? A. The deadline for filing a timely return is April 1. After April 1, Florida Statutes provide that PENALTIES be applied at 5% per month or portion of a month that the return is late. A 15% penalty is required for unreported property, AND A 25% PENALTY IF NO RETURN IS FILED. Work with your accountant or C.P.A. to identify any equipment that may have been "Physically Removed". List thoseitems in the appropriate space on your return. If you have an asset listing or depreciation schedule that identifies each piece of equipment, attach it to your complete return. Do not use vague terms such as "various" or "same as last year'. ' It is to your advantage to provide a breakdown of assets since depreciation on each item may vary. Please include your estimate of fair market value and the original cost of the item on your return. They are important considerations in determining an accurate assessment. Additional information regarding filing is provided in the instructional section of the return itself. If you sell your business, go out of business, or mbve to a new location, please inform this office. It will enable us to keep timely, accurate records. (919.55) Training Session Set For Area Farmers Area farmers who wish. to participate in to farmers market programs; starting this spring will be required to attend a mandatory training session next month. Training sessions will be held in various loca- tions for growers participating in the Farmers'Market Nutrition Program IFMNNP). Training ses- sions will be held at the follom- ing locations and is MANDA- TORY for all participants. All previous Growers agreements have expired. .Farmers must attend training and sign new agreements to accept FMNP' checks. The training is designed to fa- miliarize local farmers.with two nutritional programs operated at community farmers' markets by Sthe Florida Department of Agri-' culture and Consumer Sen ices and the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. The Farmers' Market Nutri- tion Program (FMNP) provides WIC participants with coupons that can be used to purchase locally grown, fresh Florida fruits and vegetables. The Senior SFarmers' Market Nutrition Pro- gram (SFMNP) provides low-in- come seniors with coupons that can be used to purchase locally grown, fresh Florida fruits and vegetables. This produce can be purchased at authorized commu- nity farmers' markets from April 1 through July 31,2006. Under guidelines applicable to both programs, only fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Florida or within 50 miles of the farmers' market may be purchased with the coupons. Coupons may be used to purchase a wide variety of approved commodities. These programs benefit farm- ers by expanding the base of consumers who .shop at com- munity farmers' markets. It also benefits consumers who can easily purchase locally grown fresh produce using their pro- gram coupons. Fresh fruits and vegetables are important to good health, and these programs en- able WIC participants and low- income seniors to conveniently purchase nutritious products that enhance their diet. While high school diplomas are a great start, many of today's businesses are looking for college graduates to fill entry- level positions. And for many parents in Gilchrist County, the question isn't whether they want to send their children to college, but 'if they can save enough money to get them there. The Florida Prepaid College Board offers two great options for college savings: the Florida Prepaid College Plan and the Florida College Investment Plan. To help 'inform' residents' on ways to save for future college expenses, the Florida Prepaid' College Board has joined forces with the Gilchrist County Chamber .of Commerce. As part of the alliance, the Chamber of Commerce will distribute. information, regarding both, college savings plans. ' The Florida Prepaid College Plan began:in 1987 and has sold close to :.1.1 million contracts since its inception. Our data shows that, on average, one out of every 10 children in Florida have a Florida Prepaid College account. However, there are still many families with children in Gilchrist County r ho have not taken -advantage of the benefits the program offers. "Higher education opens the door to greater opportunities for children, families and the business community," sa)s Tom Wallace, Executive Director of .the Florida PrepaidCollege Board.\"Through our partnership with the Gilchrist Count\ Chamber, of Commerce, we know we can achieve our goal'of reaching many Gilchrist County parents and provide them with. affordable options to save for their children's future college education." With the Florida :Prepaid college Plan, families can lock in thecosit of college riAtion. locai : fees'- and dormitorN housing for a child at today's prices. When the child is ready for college, the. plan covers the actual cost at any Florida public college; or the value of the plan can be transferred .to most private colleges in Florida, select technical schools and most out-of-state colleges. Investing in 'a college_ savings plan is a big financial commitment, but it is well worth it. With a Prepaid College Plan, the rates are locked in today and prices never increase. A family's investment is guaranteed and will be there when it is time for the child to go to college. There is a prepaid plan to meet every family's financial need, to provide the opportunity for each child to realize his/her full potential. Additionally, the savings for a family can be dramatic in many cases. According to Ernst & Young,' the Board's actuarial consulting firm, when today's newborns enter college 18 years from now, the cost of a four-year education at a Florida public university (including tuition, local fees and dormitory housing) will be approximately 93,628. With the Florida Prepaid College Plan, today a family can purchase four years of tuition, local fees and dormitory housing at a Florida public university for a newborn for approximately $28,191, if made in a lump-sum payment, and save more than $65,000*. The Florida Prepaid College Plan is financially guaranteed 'by the State of Florida, making it a safe way to save. To qualify, the child or the child's parent/ guardian must be a Florida resident. Anyone, including parents, grandparents, friends or even businesses, may purchase a plan. The open enrollment period for the Prepaid College Plan ended on Tuesday, January 31, 2006. The Florida Prepaid College Board provides families with a second option to save for college. The Florida College Investment Plan, which offers a range of investment options and flexibility, may be used for any qualified college expense, including 'tuition, fees, room and board, 'books, supplies, computers, and equipment required by the college. The plan may be used at any public or private accredited university, community college or technical Florida Museum To Host 27th Annual Collectors Day February 11 The Florida Museum of Natural History will host its 27th annual Collectors Day from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. on February 11. Fill. out application at Ayers Health & Rehab, 606 NE 7th Street, Trenton. ltb,2-2 Need I CAII IIA Sgni1 j Building Home Equity Based on history in our area, one of the surest ways to increase financial security is to buy real estate. Why? The answer is simple equity. Equity is the difference between what you owe on your home, and what your home is, worth. If the balance on your mortgage is $50,000, and you could sell your home for $150,000 then your equity is $100,000. In our market, property has been appreciating at a high rate, especially the land. Sometimes when customers call me to sell their property, they are surprised as to the actual value of their home in today's market. Just over a year ago, land was around 3-5 thousand dollars an acre. Today it is rare to see land for $1,0,000 an acre. You do not have ta sell your property to take advantage of the equity you have built. Many mortgage companies have loans available to take the Equity out of your home in the form. of a loan. These programs vary from lender to lender, usually they do have lower interest rates than car loans, or. credit cards. - There are other advantages as well to owning your own home. Visit my website, www.willgillespie.net or call my cell phone to see what your equity may be. SALES PERSON NEEDED for log home company. Sales experi- ence and construction knowledge helpful. Full time with draw and benefits. Fax resume to 352-486- 4199 or e-mail to PVBTPC@aol. com SCLASSIFIEDSSSD.S CLASSIFIED ADS $4.50 MINIMUM FOR 20 WORDS. 5 CENTS EACH ADDITIONAL WORD. Gilchrist Chamber Of Commerce Honors Outstanding Leaders In Annual Banquet (Continued from Page One) whenever he is needed. Many farmers in this area are always calling on this man to assist them with tips on proper application of their chemicals, pesticides .and fertilizers. Charles Townsend explained that this man always has gone above and beyond to help local youth in financial matters when the need is there. 'This man is an honest, hardworking friend to all and is most concerned about the future' of Gilchrist County. Tonight we honor "Big Jim" Jones. The J. Min Ayers Lifetime Achievement award is an honor that was established by the Gilchrist Chamber of Commerce in honor of the late J. Min Ayers, the editor, publisher and owner of the Gilchrist County Journal for over 65 years. This is a man that loved Trenton and Gilchrist County and he made his. life working and raising his family in this rural community. The past recipients of this honor are: Theodore M. Burt, Mrs. Iris Roberts, William O. Clifton, Frank Grant and Gary Rexroat. This year, Chamber Director Randy Durden introduced the honorees for 2006. "Just as the name of this award says a lot, having the privilege of presenting this award tonight, that is named in honor of Mr. J. Min Ayers is very special to me," Durden explained. "I have known this years -recipient all of my life. I have always respected them and have grown to love them as a family member. They have been very active in their church and have taken a tremendous interest in making Gilchrist County a better place to live. They are always willing to take the time to help anyone who is in need and will always be there in times of trouble. I believe this Comes from them not only being devoted Christians but also having strong family values. As in the past, this 3ear's award will be presented to a husband and wife. As longtime citizens of Gilchrist County, they represent, the hard work and dedication that ~ as needed in past.years to succeed as a family and also to be successful business owners. I knn\\ that if you ask either one of them what. is the key to their, success, they will tell you that it begins with the support that they have given each other through the years. He has been a successful businessman for over 40 years as he owned and operated the Farm Service'Store in Trenton. He. has sern ed as a director of Tri-County Bank. In 1992 he was elected .to the Gilchrist County Commission and served the people of Gilchrist County until No\ ember 2004 As 'ou probably know by now, this year's recipient is Mr. Wilbur and Mrs. Betty Bush," Durden explained. They received a- standing ovation from everyone attending the banquet. The Gilchrist County, Chamber of Commerce had a very successful year as the Board of Directors has Maureen Gentry now on their team as Executive Director. President Julie Thomas has also led the organization through a trying year of successful acti\ cities. The Chamber in 2006 will have four new directors come on board. These members are Pam Sanchez, Tony Crews, Tammy Davis and Mitchell Gentry. The 2006 banquet was a very nice ,evening as Captain Hugh's catered the meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes and much more. The meal was served cafeteria style and a group of Trenton High School students did a great job providing the drinks and desserts to those attending the evening program. CHEVROLET-. Remember, the cat is .being introduced to terri- tor\ already "claimed" by your resident pet, so you need to take both cats' feelings into account. In addition, it is \our respon- sibiliit to protect the health of your resident'pets and the new- comer.-For instance, many cats that are adopted from shelters have upper respiratory infections that are either brewing or obvi- ous. It is important for a cat with such an infection to be treated as soon as possible. Make sure to keep your new cat completely isolated from your other 'cats for at least a week, or until the infection has. completely cleared: up before attempting introduc- tions. Check your resident cat's vaccination status to make sure, he is sufficiently %ell protected, against diseases the newcomer .may be harboring. Upon bringing your new cat home, put him into a private room for his first week. This is where your new cat will begin to settle into his new home. Your resident cat should not be allowed to enter this room or to stay at the door growling and hissing. After a week has passed, allow your resident cat to explore out- side the door of the room where the new cat is residing. Only when all signs of ag- .gression (hissing, growling) are absent, open the door a crack. Use a doorstop or hook to secure the door. Again, wait for the hissing and growling, if any, to disappear. If you have a large carrier or crate, place the new cat in it. Then bring it into your main living area. Try simultaneously feeding both cats treats or deli- cious food so that they associate each other's presence with a pleasurable experience. Once the cats are comfortable in this situation, allow them interact under your supervision. If there are any signs of aggres- sion, you might have to limit their exposure to, say, 5 to 10 minutes, or perhaps go back to the separation phase. Gradually increase the time the cats spend together as long as they are not aggressive to each other. Remember cat play can be pretty iough. You should also obtain new food and water bowls, an extra litter box (or two), scratching posts/pads, various toys, and bedding for the new cat. Ob- tain the same type of food that the "new" cat was eating in the previous home. If you choose to switch the cat's ration, do so gradually over a two-week pe- Sriod to decrease the chances of causing -diarrhea. All these hints will help your new pet settle in and become one of the family. Humane Society Thrift Store The Humane Society Thrift Store will be closed for some cleaning, sorting, pricing, and remodeling. We need some people with cleaning and or carpentry skills. Humane Society of Gilchrist County, Inc. S.P.O. Box 600 Trenton, Florida 32693 Free Stormwater Pond Workshops Being Offered I The Alachua Count) Environ- mental Prtectrin Department is hosting three free stormwater pond workshops for people whose work may be affected by ponds and interested citi- zens and businesses. The new county regulations mandate the incorporation of new approaches and principles to the design and maintenance of stormwater ponds. This workshop can help you better understand what these requirements are and how they may affect your work practices. People from outside Alachua County who are interested in learning more about stormwater ponds are also encouraged to attend. While all people are welcome at any of the workshops, each of them will target a different audi- ence. The first will target people whose work may be affected by new approaches, and in the case of Alachua County, the new Land Development Regulations (LDRs). Examples of people who might be especially inter- ested in the February 15th date are agency staff, parks person-' nel, public works employees, grounds keepers, landscapers, and the like. The February 25th work- shop will be geared toward the general public. Neighborhood associations, homeowner asso- ciations, businesses, and inter- ested individuals might prefer to attend this date. Lastly, March 1st will be tar- geting the building community, builders, developers, planners, engineers, consultants, etc. There will be more focus on de- sign concepts at this workshop, with a tour of several ponds included. New approaches to stormwater ponds that have a greater emphasis on water qual- ity, wildlife habitat, and ecologi- cal diversity as well as the new LDRs will be explored. Dr. Mark Clark, IFAS Exten- sion Agent for Wetlands and Water Quality, will conduct each of the three workshops. All workshops, are free, and lunch will be provided. Each of the workshops will have both a classroom component and hands-on activity with the toyr being substituted for the hands-on work at the March. 1st workshop.. SThis is a great opportunity for all to learn new ideas and methods regarding stormwater ponds. The workshops are spon- sored by the Alachua County Environmental Protection De- partment, Current Problems, and IFAS. 2006 Malibu Sedan 2006 Colorado Reg.
