The evening was hosted by the John Hance O'Steen 'Camp 770 of Gilchrist County, Dixie Defenders Camp 2086 of Fanning Springs, and Madison Starke Perry Camp 1424. Approximately 160 members and guests were present to share dinner, fellowship and their heritage. Present at the dinner were special guest speakers General Tom Jessee, representing General Lee; Emery Thrift, representing General Jackson; and Hal Merritt, representing General Merritt of the Union Army. After dinner these three Generals spoke to the guests about their lives during the Civil War. General Merritt spoke of how it felt to be a Union General coming up against General Lee and Jackson. Hal Merritt, as General Merritt, explained the admiration felt when finding his opponent was one of the great leaders General Robert E. Lee or General "Stonewall" Jackson and it was an honor to fight against them. General Tom Jessee as General Robert E. Lee shared some moments of his life with the group. General Lee came from a poor family and went into the Army to receive his education. He graduated with high honors (2nd in his class without any demerits). In 1846 he went to fight in the War with Mexico where he received much of his fighting experience. He was awarded the honorary title of Brevet Colonel for his gallantry during that war. Later the President asked him to go to Harpers Ferry to suppress John Brown and his rebellion. Later he would resign his commission to fight in the Civil War for the Confederate Army. Emory Thrift, as General "Stonewall" Jackson, explained many similar events in his life including a difficult childhood but still he went on to graduate from West Point. He also served in the War with Mexico and was also called to Harpers Ferry to control the rebellion. He went on to be one of the most recognized Generals to lead in the Civil War until he was mortally wounded during a maneuver at Chancellorsville where he had to have his left arm amputated and died eight days later of pneumonia. Special Guest Speaker Commander Jack Bridwell of the Army of Tennessee commended the three on their job representing their respective Generals. He impressed upon the group the importance of one's heritage and the need to pass on the knowledge arid the truth about your heritage. Gary (Possum) Tryon and Billy Cannon aboard the captain's airboat as we fished out from Shired Island in Dixie County. This trip took us into the bays and creeks of Dixie County coastline between Fishbone Creek and Horseshoe Beach. This is an area that provides not only good fishing but a scenic opportunity for folks that love to get into the outdoors. We had the inside track on catching fish in this area as we were on an airboat fishing with a guy that not only knew the waters, but also knew where the best places were 'to catch the redfish,, sheepshead, speckled trout and of course mullet. I have to admit that riding on the airboat was a rush and fishing with these two guys was a non-stop entertaining experience. When we reached the public ramp at Shired Island that morning, the tide was low and still going out. I had always, heard- that an airboat was the best means of transportation in .the coastal marsles, especially when the tide is low. We fished the deep holes Where Possum and his wife had caught fish in .he past. At first, the fish \were Slow to respond to our offering of shrimp; but as things warmed up the fish began to bite as the tide turned and started back in. By Lauren Rudd A number of readers have written in to ask about General Motors, with the idea of buying the' shares as either a contrarian investment, or to take advantage of the current 9 percent dividend yield. I would advise extreme caution before making such a move. To. be more specific, you have to wonder what tea leaves GM is reading. For example, at the recent North American. International Auto Show, GM Displayed the concept for a new Chevrolet Camaro muscle car. The company has spent seven months developing the 400- horsepower vehicle in an effort to challenge Ford's Mustang. With the country's attention riveted on oil and gasoline prices, fuel efficient hybrids are in heavy demand. Furthermore. my research indicates \ou can look forward to $70 per barrel. for. crude, with the associated increase in gasoline prices, by mid-\ear. Meanwhile, GM, is spending precious research 'dollars on 400 horsepower muscle cars. Dividends are" designed to \return a portion of a company's profits back to its shareholders. Companies that are hemorrhaging red ink should: sheepshead bent his rod over into the r-position that he was unable to get the hardest pull of tle' day into the boat. Billy probably caught more fish than anyone else on this trip, and he continued-to remind Possum and myself of his superior fish catching ability. On the other hand; there was our Captain'that almost everytime he would get a true'ri-'d'elding experience, he would call for the net, I.have.yet to recall Billy or myself reaching to the far side of the boat to get the net and place it in the water. Possum also caught some good fish during the day and guided us to a very enjoyable trip. I was aboard on this trip due to my desire to catch a mullet in my cast net. It has. been years since I haVe stood on the front of an airboat with my hands full of cast net waiting to'see a whirl .S. V. L . Actually I bought a few other items including several slabs of rids, and some link sausage, along with stuffed pork chops for our son J. and daughter-in-law Lyndsay. You might be wondering why in the world I would drive to Georgia instead of buying meat here. Fact is I mostly shop at, Hitchcock's, buying Gilchrist Sausage and any other meat John and I eat. But a couple not be paying dividends; .and GM lost nearly $5 billion on its core North American automotive operations in the first three quarters of 2005. If GM 'cut its dividend by 50 percent it \would add approximately $566 million a. year to the bottom. line. So wh\ is GM. paving such a high dividend? The company is worried that a dividend cut .would put tremendous selling pressure on the stock, driving its price e\en lower. Yet, a lower price today might help ensure a higher price tomorrow. Wall Street is bailing out of a stock that, while e\pensi\e from:,a price-to-earnings iP/E I perspective, still sho\s some excellent promise. Genentech recently announced annual 2005 ,.GAAP earnings of $1.18 per share, a 62 percent increase over earnings of 73 cents per share in 2004. Total product .sales 'were $5,488.1 million, a 46 percent increase over product sales of $3,748.9 million in 2004, while sales of Avastin increased 108 percent to $1,132.9 million from $544.6 million inr 2004. Fourth quarter Avastin; sales increased 89 percent to $359.1 million from $190.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2004 ;.. ;, .,' But ,\ jll Street s. focu,.s was on Avastin's fourth quarter sales, which were about $10 to $20 million short of Street expectations. That amounts to an of a fish in the shallows, but I was -excited about the opportunity to again do so. At first .:I was hesitant about trusting the Captain by standing t on the front of his boat, but as I time went by, I became more Comfortable with his driving and felt he knew where the fish were. This fishing trip was a true experience of fishing and having a good time. As we caught fish during the day, I was surprised to see the number of single-person kayaks out around the mouth of the bay leading into the creeks. There were three guys paddling around in their single person boats. I couldn't tell if these guys were catching any fish, but as the day passed by, we got a laugh as we watched these guys paddle up and down creeks trying to find their way :to a beach where they: could land their boats. They finally came by our boat close enough to ask which way is Fishbone Landing. Possum gave them proper directions and we saw them walking back to the, Shired Island ramp site as we were driving down the road headed home later that afternoon. I can't imagine the experience 'one would have in paddling one of these boats around the saltwater marshes and out into the Gulf of Mexico. I can see paddling up and down a creek and staying near the landing, but getting out and not being able to get back is beyond my understanding. Having a day to enjoy the outdoors with friends is not only a pleasure, but a trip down memory lane. Streetwise error rate too small to calculate. While the medical jargon revol% ing around Genentech ,,may. riesmble ancient Greek. rthe resulting numbers, do not. For. Its 2006 fiscal year, I am forecasting GAAP earnings for Genentech of $1.71 per share, or an earnings growth rate of 45 percent. But:will it be enough to maintain Genentech's lofty P/E ratio of 75. Even if the P/E ratio should fall to 55, a. dop of 27 percent, you would still have a $94 stock for a 6 percent price gain, assuming my earnings estimate is correct. However, with a 45 percent earnings growth rate, a drop of that magnitude is, in my opinion, unlikely. However, you would want to wait until the Street gets over its selling frenzy before considering an investment. She visited a meat shop near Cordele. and purchased stuffed pork chops. They looked so good that I searched her web site and found the location of Stripling's General Store. Just as quick as we could my longtime friend, Beth Davis, and I made a trip up near Cordele and brought home a cooler full of meat. Man,:was that sausage good. This family. has been making sausage the same why since 1964, when it was made in the, back of their Granddaddy's grocery store in Warwick. They use a special blend of spices and seasonings, fresh. whole hogs, and natural hog casing. Ashley Gbss, who works in the Moultrie store, said they, make some 230,000 pounds of sausage annually. Ashley is the third generation of the family to. ork at, the company, now owned by her father. She said her grandfather and grandmother still get up earl\ eter\ morning and go to \rork at the High"a% 300 store near Cordele \\here the\ make sausage biscuits'. Ashley said that \ou ha e to get there pretty early to get one of their sausage biscuits. The\ kill hogs and make the sausage. \eekl at their federally, inspected processing plant in Moultrie and the sausage is then trucked to the t\\o other locations. I really like their medium fresh pan sausage and their smoked links. Both types of sausage come in mild, medium and.hot. They also have fresh link sausage which I have' not Imagine receiving a letter from someone that you did not know as they briefly describe who they are and why they have written to you. Responding to the letter, a correspondence begins that carries over a lifetime. Through these letters, a bond grows that over the miles of separation builds trust, faith /and love in the one who sent the letter. It will be many years before the time comes when'you will actually meet the person face to face. The day arrives. You. Stake a flight to their home far away. As you make the journey, your mind races with the anticipation and joy of finally seeing the person you have come to love and adore face to face. Departing the plane, you find yourself in a sea of people thronging about you. In the crowd, a face stands out that you recognize as your friend. You have never met them, seen a picture of them or talked with them on the phone. Yet there is no doubt who they are. They look just as you have imagined. Through the pages .of time written upon the years of correspondence, you know without a doubt who your friend is. You embrace. Everything you have learned about that person is true. All you have shared is complete. Your bond is everlasting. This story is not improbable as many have met over lines of correspondence, fell in love or established years of friendship. Our relationship with the Father and the Son is the same way. We have never met God, seen Him or talked with Him. This is also true of Jesus Christ. Peter writes: "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable andfull ofglory" (1 Peter 1:8). How do we develop a close relationship with someone we have not seen? We, spend time communing with them! The great joy and blessing of being a child of God is spending time listening'to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and talking to them. Jehovah has revealed His mind to man through the written word and as often as we spend time meditating upon its truths and precepts, we gain a greater knowledge of Him. Found in the pages of divine writ are the characteristics of the Heavenly Father. We see His love, His mercy, His grace, His justice, His severity we see the total image of the Father through His word. What is so wonderful about meditating on the word of God is how clear the Father becomes in our mind. How can we know the personality of Jesus Christ without knowing who He is, why He is, what He is and every part of Him embedded in our lives? Paul expressed the desire to "know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death" (Philippians 3:10). This knowledge was a complete understanding of Jesus Christ. When Paul faced death (2 Timothy 4) he was not afraid. He was finally going home to see his friend that he had loved for so many years and yet not seen. Such is the character of those who diligently seek to know the life of Christ in their lives. A figure is given of eternal life that when we stand before God in judgment, are we going to be strangers to the Father or children who have drawn close to Him? Will God ask strangers to live in His home? No - "Well done, good and faithful servants" is reserved for those who are familiar with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. From The Shelves Of Bell Library Here is a question for our beginning readers, "What is a Fraggle?'" I don't know. I asked Roselyn's grandmother and she , said the books about Fraggles Were Roselyn's favorites. When , she visits the library again, I. will have to ask her. Maybe I will ask Brian, he is getting to be a big boy and he reads a lot. Maybe he can tell me. You' will find the "Fraggle" books in the, beginning reader's section at Bell Library. I read a junior b:ok, The Fireball Mystery, written by, Mark Adrain that is an intriguing hovel about a brother and sister whose father bought an island. They are living on a houseboat until he can build a house on' the island. Do you think the) are frightened when, on the first night aboard the boat, they saw a m serious light, like a ball of fire on the uninhabited island? Tutoring is being offered J at the library. after school for students needing help with Assignments, etc. If you know 'of an adult who cannot read, we can help with this also. Two members of the volunteer staff S have taught reading in public, school, as well as to adults. In addition, it provides information that will help you file an accurate and timely tax return. Questions Most Frequently Asked About Tangible Personal Property Q. What is Tangible Personal Properrn? A. Tangible Personal Property is everything other than real estate that has value by itself It would include things such as furniture, fixtures, tools, machinery, household appliances, signs, equipment, leasehold improvements, supplies, leased equipment and any other equipment used in a business or to earn income. Q. Who must file? A. Anyone in possession of assets on January 1 who has either a proprietorship, partnership, corporation or is a self-employed agent or contractor, must file each year. Property owners who lease, lend or rent property must also file. Q. Why must I file a return? A. Florida Statutes 193.052 requires that all tangible personal property be reported each year to the Property Appraiser's office: If you receive a return, it's because our office has determined that you may have property to report. If you feel the form is not applicable, return it with an explanation: Either way, the form MUST be returned. Failure to receive a Personal Property Tax Return (DR-405) does not relieve you of your obligation to file. Q. How can I obtain this form? A. At the beginning of the year a return is mailed to Tangible Personal Property owners. If you do not get one, contact the Property Appraiser's Office. Q. What if I have no assets to report? Do I still have to file a return? A. Yes, if you feel you do not have anything to report, fill out items 1 through 9 on the return, and attach an explanation of why nothing was reported. However, almost all businesses and rental units have some assets to report even if it is only supplies, rented equipment or household goods. Q. If I am no longer in business, should I still file the return? A. Yes, if you were not in business on January 1 of the taxing year, follow this procedure: 1) On your return, indicate the date you went out of business and the manner in which you disposed of your business assets. Remember if you still have the assets, you must file on them. 2) Sign and date the return. 3) Have your signature notarized. 4) Mail the return back to this office. Q. What is an office or field review assessment? A. When a tax return is not filed by April 1 we are required to place an assessment on the property. This assessment represents an estimate based on the value of business with similar equipment and assets. Being assessed does not alleviate your responsibility to file an accurate return. Q. What if I don't agree with the assessed value that appears on the notice of proposed property taxes that I receive in August of each year? A. Call this office or come in and discuss the matter with us. If you have evidence that the appraised value is more'than the actual fair market value of your property, we will welcome the opportunity to review all the pertinent facts. Q. What if I buy or sell an existing business during the year - Who is responsible for the taxes? A. The new owner is responsible, however if there is insuffi- cient property to satisfy the taxes due, the owner on January 1 would be responsible for the difference. Most title companies do not do a search of the tangible assets of a business. You should therefore consult your realtor, attorney or closing agent to avoid problems in this area. To inquire for more information about Tangible Personal Property please contact: Damon C. Leggett Gilchrist County Property Appraiser 112 South Main Street, Room 138 Trenton, Florida 32693 (352) 463-3190 1-800-219-3208 Q. What if I receive more than one tax return? A. All returns must be sent back. If you have more than one location, the assets of each should be listed separately on each return. Q. What if I have old equipment that has been fully depreciated and written off the books? A. Whether fully depreciated in your accounting records or not, all property still in use or in your possession should be reported. Q. Do I have to report assets that I lease,-loan, rent, borrow or are provided in the rent? A. Yes, there is an area on the return specifically for those assets. Even though the assets are assessed to the owner, they must be listed for informational purposes. Q. Is there a minimum value that I do not have to report? A. No, there is no minimum value. A tangible tax return must be filed on all assets by April 1. Q. IfI rent my furnished home or condo for a few months, do I have to file a tangible personal property tax return? A. Yes, since rental activity is of an income producing nature, you must file a return which lists your personal property. Items that should be listed include: Draperies, furniture, appliances and any other personal property included in the rental unit. Q. Are there deadlines and penalties? A. The deadline for filing a timely return is April 1. After April 1, Florida Statutes provide that PENALTIES be applied at!5% per month or portion of a month that the return is late. A 15% penalty is required for unreported property, AND A 25% PENALTY IF NO RETURN IS FILED. Why? The answer is simple equity. - Equity is the difference between what you owe on your home, and what your home is worth. If the balance on your mortgage is $50,000, and you could sell your home for $150,000 then your equity is $100,000. ' - In our market, property has been appreciating at a high rate, especially the land. Sometimes when customers call me to sell their property, they are surprised as to the actual value of their home in today's market. Just over a year ago, land was around 3-5 thousand dollars an acre. Today it is rare to see land for $10,000 an acre. - You do not have to sell your property to take advantage of the equity you have built. Many mortgage companies have loans available to take the equity out of your home in the form of a loan. These programs vary from lender to lender, usually they do have lower interest rates than car loans, or credit cards. - There are other advantages as well to owning your own home. Visit my website, www.willgillespie.net or call my cell phone to see what your equity may be. "Professional Service With A Personal Touch" W" I- Services~ `I ............ Commander Bridwell asked that the members make sure the truth about what they stand for is being passed on to others. He is fighting to keep their right to fly the Confederate Flag and have the Civil War Memorials stand. He was unhappy to report that there are those in government who are trying to have these things removed permanently and they could even have an impact on gravesites. He impressed upon the group the words "always tell truth and know what you're talking about." "The Civil War was not about slavery, slavery was going away" whether the war happened or not. "The Civil War was about money," and there are a dot of people who do' not know their history. Doug Dawson, Florida Division Commander, was also present at the dinner. He asked the members to spread the word about the Sons of Confederate Veterans and ask others to join. He also asked the members to have the strength and courage to correct those who misrepresent their group. The Sons of oR *19900 Mo." Confederate Veterans have asked some individuals not to renew their membership who have not represented themselves and the. group appropriately. As for those who were under the impression that this is an all white group he reminds them that their group has black members including Mr. Nelson Winbush whose grandfather fought in the Civil War. Commander Clement Lindsey of the John Hance O'Steen Camp 770 thanks his co-hosts Commanders Fred Donaldson of the Madison Starke Perry Camp 1424 and Joe Sparacino of the Dixie Defenders Camp 2086 in Fanning Springs for their support in putting on this second annual dinner. He also wanted to thank the many members for joining them in fellowship and remembrance. The Commanders hope everyone will take the time to remember their true history and their heritage no matter what the time. Senate and House committees are now meeting to review reports on projects started as a. result of the 2005 Legislative Session. Members are also discussing proposed changes or additions to Florida's statutes and budget that %v ill be considered in the: upcoming session, starting on March 7, 2006. Committee hearings began last fall and are scheduled throughout January and February in Tallahassee. I anticipate that several topics will be of statewide interest as session begins. I expect there to 'be a continued focus on quality) implementation of the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program. In light of the recent Supreme Court.ruling, Legislators will be reviewing Florida's eminent domain laws and my concern is'that we safeguard indis idual property rights. Another issue that will require thoughtful action is the needed oversight.of state contracts for services to be sure state funds are well spent. Finally, I expect discussion of the Jessica Lunsford Act, to be sure the law is working as intended- and to address implementation issues that arose. As a co-author, I am most proud of the pro; ision that requires a mandatory 25 year sentence for those who molest children under the age of 12. Our North Florida interests do not alhwa.s coincide %with those of the more urban areas and I, am fortunate to serve with other Senators and Representatikes who 'pride themselves on working as a team to serve all the rural counties in north, central Florida. Ii always helps me be a better advocate when I hear from my constituents. 'While I may not always agree with you or be able to take immediate action on your ideas, I do value lots of input. You are welcome to write to me: Senator Rod Smith, 4131 NW 28', Lane, Suite 4, Gaines\ ille. Florida 32606. Or,.you can use my email address: smith rod w e b@leg.state.fl.us. Sincerely, Rod Smith DeVore Retires From Lower Suwannee Refuge Lower Suwannee National Refuge engineering equipment operator, W. Armegy DeVore, recently retired in January 2006, after 18 years with U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.' Mr. DeVore leaves behind significant positive impacts to the refuge including years of high quality maintenance to more than 100 miles of refuge roads. For many of his years, he also protected the refuge wildlife, habitat, and visitors by serving as arefuge law enforcement officer. Before going to work for the federal agency, DeVore worked with various municipalities as a heavy equipment operator and served two years in the United States Marine Corp in the Eighth Engineer Battalion Force Troops at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina. At one time, he owned his own land clearing and excavating business. He began working with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Lower Suwannee in June 1989. In the earliest years of the refuge,. there were roads to be built, boardwalks and fishing piers to be constructed, nature trails to be cut, and signs to be erected. He always enjoyed the variety the job provided. After 14 years of hard work, DeVore is proud the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge has developed into. an outstanding example of. the Florida he remembers. The Refuge received extensive damage during the 2004 hurricane season; management began looking for better solutions to road restoration. As an expert, 'DeVore was assigned .the resurfacing of miles of refuge roads with over 100 tons of gravel. He was responsible for overseeing the dumping, spreading and leveling of the gravel using a Caterpillar motor grader. This application of gravel:on the roads will reduce cost) road maintenance in the future and ensure'safe passage for %isitois and employees.. Being the primary heavy. :equipment engineer for the past 1.6 years, DeVore's retirement will- leave. a large vacancy at the refuge one that will be difficult to fill due to lis vast kno\ ledge of all phases ofroad construction and maintenance. "Armegv leaves us %with big shoes to fill in terms of maintaining 'our roads,. and. public use areas. His expertise with a motor giader is not commonly found within the Fish and Wildlife Service" said Refuge Manjger KathyWhaley. S"We appreciate all of the work Armeg. has accomplished at' the Refuge and wish him the. best in retirement" she said. After a retirement party with family and co-workers, DeVore said, "I know I'll miss the Lo'er Suw:annee Refuge, the staff, and the work I have been doing for many years, but it's time to move to another' phase of my life." He plans to spend time fishing,. enjoying his grandchildren and catching up on the many projects he has neglected through the years.
