Ray Sanders Is Sworn In As Newly Elected

Bell Town Councilman

By Anna Wild
On Thursday, January 5, 2006,
'the Town of Bell held their first
:meeting of the new year. This
:meeting began with the installa-
tion ceremonies of Ray Sanders
*as the new Bell Town Council
:member. Mr. Sanders has lived
:in Bell his entire life and most
recently retired from the Bell
*Post Office after 26 years of
:service. He was sworn in by
:David M. Lang, Jr., the attorney
,for the Town of Bell. After his
'installation, he took his place
with the other council members
and business began. Council
members voted to approve the
re-zoning of 80 acres presently
being developed for a residential.
subdivision. The subdivision
is being constructed by Gray
Construction Company Inc. and
Jon Gray, president, was at the
_meeting to provide information
about the project. The re-zoning
of this property will allow the
residents to be located on V2 acre
lots each rather than the original
1 acre size parcel.
After a member of the com-
munity requested the use of the

was made and approved that they
implement the pohliecy of not al-
lowing the use of the Town Hall
for anything other than govern-
ment usage. This decision had
to be made due to sensitive doc-
uments maintained on the prem-
ises. The Town, Council also
approved the vote which will
prohibit outdoor yard sales on
commercial zoning areas except
for the Chamber of Commerce
Park in Bell. Outdoor yard sales
may be conducted at this park
on Saturday. A conditional use
outdoor sales permit can still be
obtained from the Town Hall.
This vote came about due to
safety concerns about the many
yard sale vendors now using the

High School. This change will
i-ke place in February.
The Council was presented
with a new zoning map created
by Chris Ruggles, an employee
with the Gilchrist County Prop-
erty Appraisers Office in their
mapping department. The new
map gives much more detail
and clear zoning definition in
.the Town of Bell. The board
will be reviewing the map this
month and will vote on. accept-
ing the new map as their of-
ficial zoning map in February.
The council decided to form
a planning committee for the
2006 Bell Christmas Parade.

on the parade committee please

After much consideration the
council -members voted to. pay
Gilchrist Count. to continue
to provide fire ser ice in the
Town of Bell. Gilchrist, County
Commissioner Randy Durden
was present to explain that the
county had not been charging
the Town of Bell for fire ser-
vices in the past, but they have
been charging the residents of
Gilchrist County. In October
2005, the Town of Bell exer-
cised their option to not take
part in the Fire Special Assess-
ment in Gilchrist County. With
the adoption of the Fire Special
Assessment the fire service in
Gilchrist will be upgraded over
a ten-year period. Gilchrist
County and the Town of Bell
entered into an agreement that

the municipality would pay
the county for providing fire
'service to the Town of Bell.

reported to be $19.536 17.
Gilchrist County agreed to give

City Of Trenton Takes First Step

To Install Digital Water Meters

In Most Needed Areas

By John M. Ayers
The Trenton 'City,
Commission took action
Monday evening to purchase
100 digital water meters for
replacement of the oldest meters
in the municipality.
Commissioner Glen Thigpen
made a motion to purchase 100
of the digital water meters from
Hughes Supply at the price
submitted in the bid. The
purchase was based on the
usability of the new digital
meter that is completely
enclosed in the meter box.
Commissioner Arlene Wilks
gave a second to the motion
before the board voted 5-0 in
favor of the purchase.
Commissioner Clifton asked the
City Manager where would the
funds come from to pay for

these new meters. "At this time
the City of Trenton would have
to borrow the money to
purchase the meters," Jered
Ottenwess, Trenton City
Manager explained.
Commissioner Thigpen
, made a motion.to allow the City
Manager to contact lending
agencies to review and
determine what is the lowest
interest rate available to the City
of Trenton for this program.
Commissioner Tim Kinsey gave
a second to the motion before
the board voted 5-0 in favor of
the motion. The estimated cost
of this entire project is $33,000.
A spokesman representing
Hughes Supply Company,
which was in attendance in the
Monday evening meeting,
reported that the software and

the hand held digital reader used
to read the new meters would
cost an additional $16,000
above the $16,500 actual meter
cost.
City Manager Ottenwess
told the board that the City of
Trenton had 13 of the older
water meters that were being
used by commercial and
residential customers that were
selected at random for testing.
The City Maintenance staff
replaced these meters before
Jered Ottenwess became City
Manager and had these meters
tested to determine the accuracy
for the study. Of the 13 meters
tested, 4 leaked too bad to be
tested and the remaining 9
failed the test that identified the

One of my friends gave me a.
cookbook that I just LOVE. It
reminded me of time spent
rambling around Georgia with
my mother. My mother and I
have spent a lot of time making
short trips around the South,
mainly in the state of Georgia. It
doesn't take much for me to
whip out my frazzled atlas and
plan up a trip. Momma has
always been as ready to plunder
around small country towns, dig
through boxes of once loved,
now abandoned linens in
antique stores.as I have. She can
even be swayed to stop 'at most
every quilting store I find along
the way.
Anyway, at Christmas I
received a copy of The Blue
Willow Inn Cookbook, by Jane
and Michael Stern. When I
unwrapped the book I -was
pleased because I hae eaten at
the Blue Willo% se' eral times
and always enjoyed it. My
friend, Donna Leggett, first told
me to eat at the Blue Willow
located. in Social Circle,
Georgia se\ eral years ago. Well,
right off, the name Social Circle
attracted my attention. On our
ne\t trip to Dillard, Georgia we-
drove a little out of our way to-
eat at the Inn and really enjoy ed
dinner (noon meal) there. The
Blue Willo\w is located in the
old neoclassical styled Upshaw
Mansion, whichh was built in
1916. Neoclassical in plain

Southern is...you know like
Tara, as in Gone With the Wind.
Speaking of Gone With the
Wind, the movie and the Blue
Willow may actually have a
connection. According to the
authors of the cookbook, long
before Margaret Mitchell wrote
her famous book Gone With The
Wind, she stayed at the
Upshaw's antebellum Southern
mansion. It seems she dated and
later married the Upshaw's
cousin Redd Upshaw.
According to those who knew
Redd, he may have inspired the
character of Rhett Butler in, the
1936 novel. Apparently ol'
Redd was quite a character, not
only was he very handsome, but
he was quite a ladies' man. I 'do
believe if my grandmother had
known Redd she would have
referred to him as a Grand'
Rascal. Ms. Mitchell'% and Mr.
Upshaw's union onl lasted a
short time. At the time she
stayed in a small guest cottage
near the mansion. She was a
little know n reporter w working at
the Atlanta Journal. Some even
believe the Upshaw Mansion
was the inspiration for Scarlett's
belo% ed Tara.
Louis and Billie Van.Dyke,
who are Sa annah nati% es,
stepped off in the restaurant
business in 1985. They opened
the Blue Willow in 1991. Since
that time people have. been
traveling to their restaurant to
eat and enjoy the, gracious
Southern hospitality that the
restaurant has to offer. Mr. Van
Dyke stressed how important
good quality food products are
to the success of any recipe. He
uses only the best ingredients at
home and in their restaurant
kitchen. He recommends such
name brand items as Kraft
cheese, Eagle Brand condensed
milk and Philadelphia cream
cheese. He also said people
should buy14ihUbesS- 'possible
!cuts of meat they can afford.
The restaurant's name, Blue
Willow Inn came from the Blue
Willow china the Van Dyke's
have collected since .the 70s.
Mr. Van Dyke said the late
beloved Mrs. Wilks inspired
him to one day own his own
restaurant. Mr. Van Dyke spoke
of eating at the Wilks' Boarding
House in Savannah since the
60s when he was in college
there. At the close of our
conversation Mr. Van Dyke told
me, that he and his wife are
doing what few people are able
to do, live 'their dream of
owning and running a renowned
restaurant. I'm guessing the fact
that they love what they do
plays a big part in making their
meals so good and their
restaurant so successful.
I've included a couple of
recipes that are served on the
huge buffet at the restaurant. If

The Sin Of Jesting
(Kent Heaton)

"Be ye therefore followers of God as dear
children: And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved
us, and hath given himselffor us an offering and a
sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor. But
fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness,
let it not be once named among you, as becometh
saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor
jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving
of thanks" (Ephesians 5:1-4).
Paul exhorts the Christian to be a follower of
God in accordance with the relationship of the child
and the Heavenly Father. There are certain things that
are not fitting for the child of God to engage in and
are not appropriate or fitting for the character of
purity. Noted in the text are such sins as fornication,
uncleanness, covetousness and certain areas of speech
that are not fitting for Christians: filthy speech,
foolish talking and jesting are shown to be ill-fitting
for the character of God's children.
Jesting is language that has doubtful morality to
its content. The use of words and suggestions that
tease the mind with suggestions of sinful activity are
condemned by the Lord. Often language is couched
in terms of double meaning that can be taken two
ways one innocent and harmless and one deadly
and sinful. Jesting is a means of invitation without
commitment. Vincent's word studies suggest jesting
as "polished and witty speech as the instrument of
sin; refinement and versatility without the flavor of
Christian grace." Jesting is found in a devious
question that suggests an action of sin in a cunning
joke. There is room for levity or humor but
underneath is a secret desire of sin.
Our speech comes from our hearts. "Either
make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the

tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree is
known by its fruit. Ye offspring of vipers, how can
ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the
abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. The
good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth
good things: and the evil man out of his evil
treasure bringeth forth evil things. And I say unto
you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they
shall give account thereof, in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy
words thou shalt be condemned" (Matthew
12:33-37). Coarse jesting comes from a heart that is
uncouth by its nature and is seeking sinful company.
The words we speak will be with us in
judgment. Idle words are those expressions of the
heart that seek for sinful pleasure without the
.obligation of action. Dirty jokes, foolish talking and
cursing will be "played back" for us before God -
and we may stand condemned because of it. We will
be justified by our words and we will be condemned
by our words. Paul admonishes you and me to put far
away from us that type of speech that is funny to the
world but not funny to the Lord.
Our measure of righteousness is how close our
speech is to the Lord and not how far we are from the
world. The morality of the world is filled with jesting
and filthy language. Children of God must stand apart
from that kind of speech. "Let it not be once named
among you, as it fitting for saints" (Ephesians 5:3).
"Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with
salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each
one" (Colossians 4:6). "The tongue of the wise utters
knowledge aright; But the mouth of fools pours out
folly" (Proverbs 15:2). Do not be a fool be wise in
speech!

Have you visited the Bell Li-

getting more books .and hav-
ing new patrons registering for
library cards. This is our tenth
year of serving the Bell commu-
nity and the citizens of the north-
ern part of Gilchrist County.
We are truhl outgrowing our
space. Just this week, someone
asked how a patron could help
Bell Library be more success-
ful.. First, the Volunteers of
the' Library have established a
building fund at Capital City
Bank., Donations, .which are
.tax deductible, will be 'used to
increase our space to. accom-
modate our patrons. Donations
canr be given by either visiting
the library, depositing it directly ,
through bank, or by mailing it to
Bell Library, P.O. Box 995, Bell,

Secondly, additional volun-'
teers are alx\vzias needed at the

you can spare weekly, come join

SALVATION ARMY THANKS YOU

Because of the generosity of many members of our community, The Salvation
Army was able to make this Christmas season more joyful for our less fortu-
nate neighbors. We appreciate each person's contribution, whether time,
talent or resources.

In particular, we salute:

First, there were the men and women who served long hours manning our
Christmas kettles. A special thanks to William Vetovitz, Jean daCosta, Norm
Conti, Denise Hudson, Ryan Hudson, Nancy Padgett, David & Justine Parks,
Colette Hiersoux, Bethany Lunsford, Janina Muhl, Clif Bradley, Myles Brad-
ley and Cecil Faison, for ringing those bells, your caring means everything,
and you have literally worked a miracle in someone's life.

To Laura Lampros, Rick Weder, DeWayne Yates, Becky Cannon, Mary Allen,
Wendell Bishop-First Baptist Church, Rayanne Ferguson, Michael McElroy-
Ameris, Scott Guthrie-Drummond Community Bank, Denise Hudson-
Capital City Bank, your many hours and hard work helped to make Christ-
mas a joyous occasion for the needy individuals in your community by pro-
viding food, clothing and toys.

And finally, there were the hundreds of contributors who gave, so that many
who might otherwise have been forgotten shared in the joy of Christmas.

Your donations help people in our community all year long. Last year alone,
your generous donations helped the young, old, troubled or hurting, they
found hope and relief through our programs and services.

To all of those who helped, We say a heartfelt "Thank You."

GENEROSITY Is
Trait For January
By Geneva Cornwell
GENEROSITY involves in-
vestment. At times we give to
other people and causes, always
making the best use of our time,
talent, and resources. The key
though is not to expect anything
in return for our investment.
GENEROSITY is "realizing
that I am a trustee of all I have
and using everything for the
best purposes." Stihiginess is
. the opposite of GENEROSITY.
GENEROSITY is the quality.
of being generous; liberality or
willingness in giving; unselfish-
ness; freedom from meanness or
. smallness of mind or character;
nobility of thought or behavior;
abundance.
The English word GENEROS-
ITY comes from the Latin word
generous, meaning "of good or
noble birth." What makes one
birth "noble" while another is
"less" noble? The fact is every
person is boin empty-handed
and totally helpless.- :It is only
because of the preparations and
investments of others that a:
child has opportunities to grow
and develop.
GENEROSITY is realizing
that everything one has is di-
rectly or indirectly the result
of others' labors.! Even the op-
portunity to work is the result
of others having established a
company or created a market.
The more clearly people see
how others are responsible for
their opportunities, the more
they will recognize theft impor-
tance of investing in the lives of
others and continuing the cycle
of GENEROSITY.
Demofistrating 'GENEROS-
ITY involves an investment in
other people or causes. A per-.
son must give without. hidden
motives or purposes. GENER-.
OSITY must be totally sincere.
Freely giving and sharing with
others requires a dramatic
change in thinking from the

Open Mon. Fri.

popular mentality of "me first!:
It is a natural tendency to be
concerned primarily for one's
own needs. A generous person,
however, is concerned with the
needs of others. At times, GEN-
EROSITY requires sacrificing
personal desires, preference, or
needs for the benefit and wellbe-
ing of others.

Every society has those who
are less fortunate than others.
Some people lack even the
necessary provisions to survive."
A generous person is willing to
share what he or she has in order
to benefit those in need. In real-
ity, many people falsely believe
they have too little to share with
others. A person's perspective
has a lot to do with his or her
GENEROSITY. A generous
person doesn't look for ways to
accumulate wealth or posses-
sions, but how to use them for
the best purposes.
GENEROSITY applies to
much more than money. Time
is a valuable resource that can,
be invested in others. Energy
can be used to help people with
practical needs. A generous per-
son is respected as someone who,
values other people's needs as
important.
Throughout life everyone has
a time x hen the help of others is
needed. GENEROSITY is real-
izing that everything one has is..
from others and cheerfully shar-
ing with others. People must
learn the value of GENEROS-
ITY at a young age. It is \ery
important 'to encourage contin-
ued development and to build
GENEROSITY with praise.,
It is hoped that readers of this
article; have received a deeper
understanding of the quality of
GENEROSITY, for it is true that
"it is far greater to give than to
receive." If there is one word
which describes the majority of
Gilchrist. County citizens it is
GENEROSITY. for being gener-
ous proes daily that our County
"is a, County of Character be-
cause it's a County that cares."

Bell Pre-K Has Christmas Program

Christmas Program
It was beginning to really feel
like Christmas at Bell Elemen-
tary School on December 8. The
pre-k class took a little break
from their new curriculum,
Opening the World of Learn-
ing, to have some Christmas
fun. They. worked very hard
on a program to present to their
parents.and families. Each class
did their own, presentations of
Christmas songs, fingerplays,.
and chants, ending witch every-'
one participating insome songs
together. They did such a great .
job! The grand finale w\as a visit
from Santa. The children also
received their own collector's
copy of The Nightl Before Christ-
mas. '
We would like to thank all the
parents and family members for
coming out to support the hard
work of all the pre-k children
and teachers. We would also
like to thank everyone who
supported the Superintendent'
Gala. Some of the funding from
this event helped us present the
books to the children that we
hope will become a part of every
Christmas in their future.

Trenton Varsity Boys
By Annmia Wild
The Trenton Tigers hosted the
Dixie County Bears on Friday,
January 6, in Trenton. The boy's
varsity game was quite exciting
as the Trenton Tigers worked
exceptionally well as a team and
kept the Bears guessing where
the ball might go next during

the four quarters of action. At
half-time the score was 31 to 23
and the varsity boys defeated the.
visiting Bears 62 to 43.
During the Junior Varsity
boys' game, both teams were
very close, which provided an,
exciting game for the fans. The
last 18 seconds of the fourth
period were the most exciting
as the Tigers were up by 1 point

take the lead. The Tigers called

in the game. After the Tigers
threw the ball into play, the
Bears' defense forced a turnover
.and shot a field goal to increase
their lead to 4 points. The Bears
defeated: the" young Tigers by a
final score of 49-45.
During the varsity girls' game
the Dixie County Bears held
control of the ball most of the

Superintendent's
Gala Update
Remember all the articles you,
saw in the paper, about the first
S.e\er "Superintendent's Gala?"
Remember how e eri',one Was
'talking about the event and 'ho\
excited we all were to be a part?'
We were also a little anxious
since it was our'first time putting
on something of this caliber.
We are EXCITED to inform
Syou, the public, what the total
Funds, after expenses, were and
how the funds were used in the
Pre-kindergarten through third
1 grade classrooms.
t The proceeds from this event
0 permitted 74 Pre-kindergarten
through third grade classrooms
to purchase literacy materials
such as books for, classroom
libraries, classroom sets of
d novels, as well as books and
s materials for literacy, centers.
1 Even our youngest Pre-
kindergarten students were given
d personal copies of "The Night
1 Before Christmas" so they could
add to their home libraries and
9 begin their journey to becoming
n successful, independent readers.
Yes, you read that correctly
74 classrooms! With your help
and support the event cleared
$10,600!
The District has begun making
plans to provide the same support
for grades fourth through eighth
with an event filled with music
and food on Saturday, February
11th, at Bell High School. More
details will be shared in a later
article (but mark your calendar
now). '
Remember, building literacy
is a lifelong process and it
must start early in a child's life.
Parents have a very important
role. Twenty minutes spent
reading with a child can increase
the child's chances of reading
on grade level, graduating from
high school, and increasing their
lifetime earnings.
Together we can help every
child become a reader. Have
you read to your child for 20
minutes today?

I.:..LOG CABIN QUITE

Log Cabin Quilters
Log Cabin Quilters met
Thursday, January 5, at the Levy
County Quilt Museum. Hand-
quilting is really going great.
All four quilts are being worked
on. A "Star" quilt was put in
the frame and how good it was
to see Ann Hardee and Goldie
working together. Another two
quilts were put together and will
be worked on at home.
Sarah Small is back from Il-
linois and we look for the other
quilters to be, back to Florida
soon. The i "Watermelon Log
Cabin" is really going great and
sometimes we have four or five
ladies sitting together enjoying
what they do.
We still have seats on the bus
trip to Tampa to the fair on Feb-
ruary 14th. The cost is $19 and
it is always a fun trip. Call 493-
2801 for informationi.
We always enjoy visitors who'
come by and today we had three
brothers who took their mother
out for a ride.. They' enjoyed our
pot luck dinner and it was a great
day for the mother.
We did have a rather special
dinner with sweet and sour
franks, onion casserole, soy
beans, cheese and mac, lots of

Lil' Farmers 4-H Enjoy Day Of Making

Cane Syrup

Bright and early on Saturday
morning, following Thanksgiv-
ing, the Lil' Farmers 4-H Club
held our monthly meeting at
our family farm, L.R. Thomas,
Inc./Diamond 99. It was syrup
making time for our family and
we were so excited to have so
many Lil' Farmers in attendance
'to watch. After a huge breakfast
cooked over an open flame that
included fresh cane syrup, the
Lil' Farmers were allowed to
ride horses and watch the entire
process of syrup making Rumor
has it that they even played in the
hay a bit, but don't tell Grandpa
or Uncle Dan.
Uncle John taught everyone a
thing or two about his secrets for
making yummy cane syrup. Un-
cle Loyd was on hand to give his
expert approval, after all, he is,
the one who taught Uncle John.
My daddy wanted me to thank
all the other dads and moms who
pitched in to help with breakfast:
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Thomas,
Mr. Doug Crawford, Mr. Terry
Parrish and my Granddaddy.
McMillan.
A special thank you to Mrs.
Sanchez and Mrs. Colson for
making 4-H so fun. God Bless.
Respectfully Submitted,

Building Home Equity
- Based on history in our area,
one of the surest ways' to
increase financial security is to
buy real estate. Why? The
answer is simple equity.
- Equity is the difference
between what you owe on your
home, and what your home is
worth. If the balance on your
mortgage is $50,000, and you
could sell your home for
$150,000 then your equity is
$100,000. .
- In our market, property has,
been appreciating at a high
rate, especially the land.
Sometimes when customers
call me to sell their property,
they are surprised as to the
actual value of their home in
today's market. Just over a
year ago, land was around 3-5
thousand dollars an acre.
Today it is rare to see land for
$10,000 an acre.
- You do not have to sell your
property to take advantage of
the equity you have built.
Many mortgage companies
have loans available to take the
equity out of your home in the
form of a loan. These
programs vary from lender to
lender, usually they do have
lower, interest rates than car
loans, or credit cards.
- There are other advantages as
well to owning your own
home. Visit my website,
www.willgillespie.net or call
my cell phone to see what your
equity may be.

Takes Action To
Purchase Digital
Water Meters To
Improve Service
(Continued from Page One)
meters were accurate enough to
be used for actual water
metering.
Ken Corbin, Certified Water
and Sewer Treatment Plant
operator for the City of Trenton,
explained that some of the,
meters in Trenton are 18 years
old. Jered Ottenwess explained-
that the study by. the City of
Trenton. determined. that some
of the water meters being used
were inaccurate by as much as
16% of the indicated reading.

The City Manager explained
that water meters are designed
to be replaced' or upgraded
every 10 years.
The City of Trenton has an
estimated 750 water meters
being used by residential and
commercial customers in the
four 'quadrants -of the
municipality.
The. City Manager further
explained that the City of
Trenton would receive enough
revenue from the new meters to
go along with the new connect
fees to pay for the new meters in
a short period of time. The City
Manager explained that at this
time the City of Trenton has
approximately $6,000 in an
account that is identified to be
used for water service needs.

Rick Weder Is
Character Council's
Personality Of The
Month For January
(Continued from Page One)

Weder is a widower, the father
of one son and three daughters.
and the grandfather to 16. He is
presently one of the directors of
the Senior Citizens Food Pantry
as well as on the board of the lo-
cal Salvation Army Unit.
As the interview with Mr.
Weder began, and in his back
office of the food pantry ware-
house, I was greeted by "Black
Beauty," the cat, better known
as "B.B." 'She is queen and
mascot of, her- domain.. She
chases all the other cats away
and on occasions brings Rick
Gifts -of mice and other critters.
She comes and goes at will and-
certainly does know w ho likes or
dislikes cats. For those who are
cat friendly, she purrs; for those
who aren't. she hisses. She is a
good "watch cat," for sure.
The character quality featured
this month is GENEROSITY.
Since 1999, when the Waccasas-
sa Volunteer Fire Department
began a county-\wide endeavor

in "fighting fires of hunger,"
Mr. Weder has proved himself
very generous in the time he
has given toward the purpose.
He spends over 3,000 minutes
on the telephone each month,,
as well as the hours it takes to
pick up food from the Bread
from the Mighty Food Bank
in Gainesville. He also dem-
onstrates GENEROSITY of
time in being at the warehouse
for senior citizens who wish to
come by and pick up a. box of
food, just for the asking. (The
actual food pantry warehouse is
leased from the City of Tren-
ton).
Mr. Weder is the first to admit
that the food pantry is. not his;
it is a consolidated effort of
the Waccasassa Volunteer Fire
Department Board and other
concerned Gilchrist Count\ cit-
izens. He desires that more and
more people will get in olled
to help the senior citizens of
'the county'. especially since
those who are on the U.S. Gov-
ernment's supplemental 'food
program usually receive only,
a pittance (usually $72-$86 a
month) for food. All kinds of'
staples are provided, as well as
paper products and frozen fish.
red meat and chicken.
Rick Weder believes that
showing GENEROSITY to
others in one's life is a way
to give back to the local com-

munity in productive ways. He
believes that "everyone has a
role in the community in try-
ing to make things better." He
says, "Exhibiting GENEROS-
ITY is a way to leave a good
mark." Rick understands how
important it is to be "sensitive
to others' needs." He looks at
it this way, "If you can help,
help. If you can't help, then
find someone who can. There's
no such.word as can't," when
people are in need. "Deal with
situations as you can."
This sensitive man learned
the character quality of GEN-
EROSITY from his father.
Rick is one of eight .children;
he has seven brothers. His fa-
ther died when he was a youth,
but the character quality of
GENEROSITY illustrated in
his, father's life has proven to
be a mainstay with Rick.
Mr. Weder also finds great
joy in working with teens.
There are some who have.
done community service work
through the food pantry and he-
has taught them the great plea-'
sure derived from working with
senior citizens. He feels that
since the love he has gained
from living in Gilchrist County
is precious to him, this is where
he antss to live for the rest of
his life. He desires to have that
love, that GENEROSITY, be
continually spilled over.from
his life into the lives of others.
Since there are so many se-
nior citizens in need in Gilchrist
County, Mr. Weder desires that
more people of the area will get
involved with the food pantry.
He accepts donations, not only
of money, but also of used of
fixable appliances, vehicles and
such that can be repaired and
sold to add tQ the food pantry
fund. He must purchase the
food from the food bank so he
has used many outlets in raising
money for the cause. For a do-
nation and eter) first Saturday
of the month, the fire depart-
ment sponsors a breakfast/.ard
sale held from 8:00 a.m. until
11:00 a.m. at the Trenton Com-
munity Center.
If you are a senior citizen and
are in need of food, please call
Rick at 463-27 10 and schedule
to pick up a box. He is will-
ing to assist you seven days a
week. The warehouse hours
are usually 10:00 a:m. to 5:00
p.m., Monday through Friday,
but he desires to assist even on
Saturday and Sundays. Call
fist before' coming.
Rick Weder is another great
citizen of our community who
is proving each day that we
live in "a County of Character
because this is a County that
cares."

Letter to the Editor,
(Continued from Page Two)
Monday-Saturday beginning at
5:30 a.m.
Neighbors spoke against the
exception for these reasons:
declining property values,
deterioration of roads, dust,
traffic, pollution from gas and
oil, fuel storage on the property,
and loud noise (the rumbling
operation of the trucks, their.
backup "beeping," and slamming
tailgates).
For the property owner, a lady
said that there were nice' houses
on either side of the business, but
the rest of the properties were
!'just trailers," and another man
said the dump trucks improve
the limerbck roads by driving
on them.
The Gilchrist County Land
SDevelopment regulations
(Section 12.2.1.3) state that the
Board grants special exceptions
that "promote the public health,
safety, morals, order, comfort,
convenience, appearance,
prosperity, or the general
welfare." Further attention
is paid to "the economic,
noise, glare, or odor effects
of the special exception on
adjoining properties...," and
that considerations are given
to "general compatibility with
adjacent properties...." Also,
the exception is to conform to
the County Comprehensive
Plan, which considers "the
existing land use pattern," and

"the impact of the proposed use"
(the neighborhood, property
values, traffic, etc.).
The dump truck property is
in a subdivision surrounded by
small residential lots. The trucks
come and go as the jobs demand.
And, there's not a driver out
there, who, when a dump truck
is in front of him, says "oh joy,
I get to follow a dump truck,"
or "lbok how that heavy truck is

improving the road."
How is this
"compatible" with
properties? How
improve property
or promote the

business
adjacent
will it
values,
"comfort,

appearance, or general welfare"
of the neighborhood? Did the
Board actually weigh the
Land Development regulations
and the Comprehensive Plan
against this request?
Most of the neighbors live in
trailers, but they pay taxes and
deserve a decent neighborhood
as good as they can make it.
They voiced their concerns, but
their concerns fell on deaf ears.
Is this the best that Planning
and Zoning can'do for Gilchrist
County citizens?
Elnora Unum
