River City Grill serves community in more ways than one

When you walk in, it looks like
a small bar with a few seats
to the left for dining.
Go further inside and it seems like
the place never ends. Through the bar,
past the exposed kitchen and into the
private room and beyond, you appreci-
ate the size, history, and intimacy.
This is the River City Grill at 131 W.
Marion St. in downtown Punta Gorda,
which in its six years has won Let's
Go's Best Restaurant and Best Place
for Dinner categories six times.
As a place for the community, it
doesn't get much better than this, in a
building steeped in history you can
see when you walk in, from the
original brick behind the bar to the
exposed wood beams and air ducts in
the dining area and private room.
The building was built in 1927 when
it was Bacon's Furniture. It was later a
government building before it became
a restaurant in 2003.
Owners Doug Amaral and Charles
Wallace, who own a restaurant on
Fifth Avenue in Naples, came to Punta
Gorda and found the building to be a
jewel with great potential.
"We were searching for a place to
invest in and we fell in love with Punta
Gorda," Amaral said. "There were no
businesses on the street and the place
was boarded up. You could roll a
bowling ball down the street at six
o'clock before we came here."
River City Grill became a staple in
the revitalization of downtown Punta
Gorda and people began to flock
there.
"It happened bigger than we thought.
It was fantastic," Amaral said. "It was a
heady time. Then the hurricane took
some of the wind out."
Amaral did his part to help the
healing by feeding everyone after the
hurricane until the food was gone,
then reopening as fast as possible to
give people a place to go.
"We brought back a sense of normal-
cy. People were thankful to go out and
not eat canned food," Amaral said.
"The community came around and
shared their experiences."
The community never forgot, as
evidenced by the yearly awards they
get. Having great food doesn't hurt
either. Amaral, a Culinary Institute of
America graduate, has created an
eclectic American Grill menu with a
twist.
Entrees include Salmon stuffed with
phyllo, butter fish with a mango
balsamic glaze, Togarashi dusted tuna
steak and Florida Cracker steak
seared in a cast iron pan, and among
the most popular, Sunday pot roast.
And they keep coming back.
"We've been blessed. What you give
is what you get," Amaral said. "We

came to be part of the community and

River City Grill also rocks long after
the kitchen closes. They have '80s
night every Thursday and Ladies Night
on Saturday with a DJ and dancing.
With 6,500 square feet, there's plenty
of room.
River City Grill is open for lunch 11
a.m. to 2:30 p.m Monday through
Friday. They are open for dinner from 4
p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through
Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and
Saturday..
The bar remains open on weekends
until 2 a.m. and they have early bird
specials and Happy Hour from 3 p.m.

SteveFest seeks vendors
The organizers of SteveFest, a three-day music festival, are currently
seeking food and craft vendors for the SteveFest 2010, to be held Feb. 26,
27 and 28 at the Charlotte County Fairgrounds, 2333 El Jobean Road, (State
Road 776) Port Charlotte. Part of the mission of SteveFestlnc. is to provide
scholarships to local students and to promote the study of Florida, its
characters and its stories through the music and writings of Steve Blackwell
and other Florida songwriters and storytellers. The SteveFest music festival
features national, regional and local folk, Americana and bluegrass acts. The
festival will offer overnight camping. Music will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday
night, Feb. 26. Music will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 and will be
held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 27. Tickets will range from weekend
passes from $55 to individual days ranging in price from $15 to $40 per
person. Camping costs are $50 (including water and electric hookups) and
$10 for "primitive" camping. Tickets are available for purchase on the Web
site.

The Marlin's in concert
The Marlin's will be in concert at Riverside
RV Resort, 9770 SW County Road 769 (Kings
Hwy.) will host The Marlin Brothers at the
enclosed and heated pavillion at 7:30 p.m. Jan.
15. The Marlin's repertoire covers the entire
musical spectrum including country, rock, big
band, pop, classical, jazz, and bluegrass. The
Marlin Brothers perform on keyboard, drums trumpet,
guitar, mandolin. They sing and plan multiple favorites of music for all ages.
The Marlin's concert might include music from such diverse artists as Glen
Miller, Willie Nelson, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Liberace, Neil Diamond,
Sinatra, Elvis, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Suzy Bogguss and Tiny Tim.
The Marlin Brothers have been performing for over 25 years and have
performed at many casinos, cruise ships, county and state fairs, and industrial

Artist's reception, exhibition
Myrna Charry's new exhibit, "Black and White is Beautiful," will be on display
throughout January at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Charlotte County
Gallery, 1532 Forrest Nelson Blvd., Port Charlotte. Her black and white gelatin
silver photographs highlight the magic of the human form. A reception will be

Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Jazz Combo
The New Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Jazz Combo will be performing a free

Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda. The concert is the first of "Taste of The Village"

Polar explorer to speak
The Lifelong Learning Institute announces Will Steger will speak about his
Artic and Antarctic adventures on Jan 28 in the Auditorium at Edison State
College, Charlotte Campus, 26300 Airport Road, Punta Gorda. Steger will talk
about his encounters with the wild over tens of thousands of miles by kayak
and dog-sled teams of over 40 years, leading teams on some of the most
significant polar expeditions in history.

'AMANDA: Encore'
Blackwood Brothers Quarte in concert
The Grammy award-winning gospel group staring Mark Blackwood, Dale
Evans, David Mann, and Brad Smith will inspire you with gospel music. The
original Blackwood Brothers Quartet was formed in 1934 in the hills of Missis-
sippi. Their dedication and effort to spread the Gospel in song has left a great
heritage and blessed the lives of many people. Since that formation, the group
has won countless awards, sung thousands of concerts, and appeared on
many television shows.
The dedication continues today through the hearts and lives of the Black-
wood Gospel Quartet. They still sing the traditional close harmony quartet style
music the Blackwood's are famous for.
The Blackwood Gospel Quartet does not take its heritage in Gospel music
lightly, nor the responsibility of integrity that goes with it. It is the sincere desire
of the Blackwood Gospel Quartet that the people who hear them will be moved
