U.S. Congressman Allen
Boyd voted against a massive
economic stimulus package in
the House of Representatives
Wednesday, questioning
whether the package will create
jobs, help small businesses and
truly strengthen the economy in
the short and long term.
The House of
Representatives passed the
economic stimulus package by
a vote of 244 to 188, with Boyd

City to PPD:

continue

aggressive

enforcement
Noting that the Perry Police
Department (PPD) has been
aggressive in its drug
eradication program, members
of the Perry City Council
would like to see that zero
tolerance stance continue.
On Tuesday, the council
began drafting its top three
goals for the coming year and
stepped-up law enforcement
topped the list.
"I would like to see an
increase of police presence in
my district," Councilman
Sylvester Harris said.
"They have been doing a
good job, but I'd like to see
some more time spent over
there," he said.
'Wheneler there is anything
about the police departmentn.
involvement with drug busts,
that's when I get the most
comments and feedback. I
think the community would
appreciate us even more
aggressive in those efforts. I
think with the new K-9 patrol
teams that are getting put in
place, that we are in a good
position to 'serve the
community well in those
areas," Councilman Don Cook
said.
Also making the draft list of
projected goals was improving
programming with the city
recreational department.
"We have made headway in
maintaining our parks, now I'd
like our goal to be
substantial improvement with
programming," Mayor Emily
Ketring.
A third possible goal was to
improve the city's Web
presence and to possibly
expand services to include
offering on-line payment
options.

against :the measure. All but
one Republican voted no--
Congresswoman Ginny
Brown-Waite of Florida did not
vote, but issued a statement
opposing the bill.
The stimulus bill, at a price
tag of $819 billion, includes
$526.5 billion in spending
initiatives and $275 billion in
tax provisions.
In order to fund the plan, the
government will have to
borrow the money adding an

estimated $347 billion in
interest payments to service the
debt, which means that the
actual, long-term cost of the
stimulus package is $1.2
trillion, Boyd said.
"I have serious concerns that
this level of deficit spending
without a plan toward fiscal
responsibility will only make
our economic problems
worse," Boyd said.
"This stimulus package does
not address the issues that we

know are at least partly
responsible for the economic
downturn, and that is years of
irresponsible fiscal policies
rooted in out-of-control
spending and borrowing."
A nonpartisan Congressional
Budget Office (CBO) report
released on Monday stated that
only 64 percent of the stimulus
money would filter into the
economy over the next 19-

Opening in June
The new Walgreens currently under construction at the corner of Jefferson
Street and U.S. 19 is slated to open in June, according to company officials.
Construction at the site had a brief scare Thursday morning when a fire
apparently flared up briefly during a welding project on the roof. The City of
Perry Fire Department responded to the call to investigate.

Revamping its plans for a
"remote read" water meter
system, the City of Perry will
begin installing new manual
read meters for residential and
small business customers
Monday--saving 'taxpayers an
estimated $1 million in
projected costs, officials say.
/ "We will be saving about
$1 million of what we
projected to spend. Purchasing
the meters and installing them
will cost somewhere around
$200,000 to $225,000. Our
first estimates for the 'remote

Statewide weather drill Wednesday

In conjunction with Florida
Hazardous Weather Week, the
National Weather Service
offices across the state will
conduct a tornado drill
coordinated with media outlets,
personal weather radios and
school districts.
The Taylor County School
District will be participating in
the drill, which is scheduled for
10:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb.
4.
The tornado warning will be
broadcast on NOAA weather
radios and be encoded as
"weekly test" for the drill.
Facilities Coordinator Dan
Anderson said the school
district will use the drill to test
radio equipment, weather
radios and emergency
procedures.
According to the official
schedule for the drill, a tornado
watch will be issued around 8

a.m., followed by a tornado
warning at 10:10. At 10:20
a.m., "upon determination of
immediate threat," the "take
shelter" or "duck and cover"

urged residents to use the drill
as a chance to test their weather
radios.
In case of actual severe
weather, the drill will be

1951 baseball team
In keeping with the baseball theme featured in the debut column of "Florida Stories," we turn to the pages of
the 1951 TACOHI yearbook. Members of the Taylor County High School baseball team were pictured, but not
named.

Long before major leagues established
teams in Florida, baseball enjoyed a place
in the sunshine.
Soon after the Civil War, town teams
began forming heated rivalries. During
the 1880s, Florida-based African-
American teams were winning organized
tournaments. By the 1890s, professional
nines from the north were conducting
spring training in the state.
Here are some tidbits about the how the
game was played, as reported by
University of Florida professor Kevin M.
McCarthy in his book, "Baseball in
Florida:"
--For a game in Palatka between two
spirited rivals called the Fats and the
Leans, the umpire brought pistols, bowie
knives and a large dog to enforce order.

At one point, he
drew his gun to
back up his
decision on a
close play.

Jacksonville's Boot and Shoe Baseball

Longfellows required each player to be
over 6-feet tall. Lake City had its Fat
Man's Club, whose players averaged 231
pounds. Other names included the
Muffers, the Quicksteps and the
Rubbers. An 1894 Palatka team changed
its name from Never Sweat to Big Injuns.
Jacksonville crushed them, scoring 19
runs in one inning and, after getting worn
out running the bases, finally let Palatka
carry out a triple play.
--James Weldon- Johnson, author, poet,
professor, lawyer' 'anid"Africafn-Aneiarlta
civil rights activist, was also an
accomplished pitcher. Johnson, who
wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing," learned
his curve ball from a Cuban Giants
pitcher and went on to play for the highly
regarded Jacksonville Domestics and the
Jacksonville Roman Cities.
--Jacksonville is likely the state's
earliest spring-training site, playing host
to the New York Giants in 1895-96. The
Boston Nationals, the Brooklyn
Superbas, the Cincinnati Reds and the
Philadelphia Athletics followed.
--In 1891, future Hall-of-Famer John J.
McGraw went to Gainesville to play
shortstop for the Gainesville All-Stars. He
had a contract that promised him
housing, food, shaving and bathing
supplies, and one cigar per week.
--Baseball games frequently raised
money for charity. For example, an 1882
game between Jacksonville and
Fernandina produced $300 for victims of
a yellow-fever epidemic in Pensacola. A
game in 1889 Jacksonville between the
Railroad Boys and the Steamboat Boys
collected money for St. Luke's Hospital.
It's no wonder baseball came to Florida
in the early days. Abner Doubleday, often
credited with being baseball's founder,
was introduced to Florida during the
Third Seminole War (1855-58) when he
was stationed at Fort Dallas on the Miami
River.
But still, it took effort to educate the
masses about the rules of the sport.
During one of the earliest reported
games, a player hit a home run but was
declared out for not touching first base. A
Tallahassee newspaper explained to the
readers that "each separate base must be
actually touched in its regular order by
some portion of the base-runner's body."

Fishing Report

Trout and grouper

seasons to close

:BY PAT MCGRIFF
One More Cast Guide Service
I really wish I had a report to
-give.
However, I have been out of
town and have not been fishing
.and no reports were available at
'the marina.
So, I will take this time to
remind folks that trout season in
our part of the state closes this
Sunday, Feb. 1.
: According to the FWC.
,speckled trout season closes
north of a line running due west
from the westernmost point of
Fred Howard Park Causeway,
,which is 1.17 miles south of the
Pinellas-Pasco county line, to
the Florida-Alabama border in
the Gulf. This area will reopen
for harvest March 1.
To make things worse, the
recreational harvest of gag-
grouper from all Gulf of Mexico
waters off Florida will close for

two months, Feb. 1 March 31.
1 guess we can still harvest
sheepshead, redfish and
flounder during this down time.
Jerry Cawthon asked me to
remind his customers of the
following February, Keaton
Beach Marina, closure:
"Notice: Due to the fact
the National Marine Fisheries
Commission has seen lit to
reduce the limits of grouper and
close grouper during the months
of February and March of '09
this establishment will close for
the entire month of February
and re-open March 1, 2009."
Since trout season is closed
Feb. 1 Feb. 28th as well, Jerry
figured no one will be down.
Please make arrangements to
contact the Marina now if you
have boats in storage (on the
racks etc.) which you wish to

Hunters kill bobcat in self defense

Two men fought and killed
an attacking 30-pound bobcat
in self defense in Martin County
last week.
According to reports from
Okeechobee County Animal
Control, two men Nwere worvnge2
on a fence on private property in
Indiantown when they spotted
the bobcat moving along the
fence line. As it came closer, the
victim moved his arms to shoo
it away. The bobcat jumped on
the man and began attacking
him. The other man grabbed a
hammer and was able to kill the
bobcat.
The victim was scratched and
bitten. Officials will test the cat
for rabies.
Bobcat attacks on humans
are uncommon. If a bobcat does
attack a human, in most cases,

or rabies. People can take
precautions to limit the impacts
of wildlife/human encounters.
The FWC reminds residents

not to let wild animals become
comfortable in residential
settings as sometimes happens
when people leave any type of

food source outside. Residents
should maintain the condition of
their homes so animals can't get
inside attics, eaves or garages.

The following is Don's personal L-
prayer from his prayer book. May it
be an example to all his life touched.

The Glorious Minority
There are people who carry life's burdens,
Their own and some other's beside;
There are people who stand in their places,
And who stand there whatever betide.
When the kingdom is c 4ilirS for workers,
Or the city is crying for men,
Or some cause is seeking supporters,
These people will answer just then.
There are two kinds of people--
you know them,
As you journey along life's track--
The people who take your ,,fiH/2h from you,
And others who put it all back.

Cards of Thanks

Williams
The steps of a good woman are ordered by the Lord. Who could
find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies.
The family of the late Annie Ruth "Babysister" Williams would
like to send a thank you for all of your special tokens of love, the
meals you prepared, the cards, flowers, phone calls, donations and
prayers. We ask that you continue to uplift us in prayer. Thanks to
you again. A special thanks to Big Bend Hospice and her doctor.
Love,
The Family

Whitfield
We do not have the words to express our thanks to everyone for
the kindnesses shown during the illness and recent death of our
mother and grandmother, Mary Lou Whitfield. Your loving
sympathy overwhelmed us with all the prayers, cards, phone calls,
visits, flowers, food and kind words.
We extend a special word of thanks to the caregivers who tended
to her every need during the months of her illness, and also a word
of thanks to Big Bend Hospice who provided extra care during the
last days of her life.
Our thanks would not be complete without mentioning the
Family Ministry Committee of First Baptist Church for providing
the meal the day of the funeral; to the. Rev. Glenn Baker of First
Baptist and the Rev. Larry Neal of First Presbyterian for their
visits and prayers, and to the Rev. Neal for officiating at the
funeral.
We also express our gratitude to Perry Newspapers, Inc., for
devoting its Looking Back page to our mother's life and
accomplishments.

"We are projecting an eight
percent increase in water

that is a conservative number,"
Brown said.
Local company Blue Rok

Funding for the project is
coming from.several sources,
including reserves and a line of
credit obtained by the city
(which will be re-paid
from anticipated increased
revenues).
The city originally planned
to install a remote reading
system for water meters that
could also be used to read
natural gas usage.
"We were told that vendors
would be able to put the new'
meters on the gas meters so that
both could be electronically
read. However, it turned :out
that the vendors couldn't do
that for nearly 80 percent of the
gas meters, which pushed up
the cost to where it didn't make
sense to spend that much
money to do that. So we voided
the bids for the remote system
and decided to. change out thb
meters and stay with a manual
read system. We will still have
meter readers and will be doing
things the same way," Brown
said.
The change-out will not
impact the city's largest water
consumers, such as Buckeye,
Lance Foods and Taylor
Correctional Institution.
"We rebuild their meters
every two years," Brown said.
This is the first major
upgrade in residential water
meters since the 1980s.

recall action following almost
two weeks of inspection and
review at the Georgia facility,"
the company said in a release
Wednesday.
The expanded recall includes
all peanuts (dry and oil
roasted), granulated peanuts,
peanut meal, peanut butter and

peanut paste.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the
Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) announced that a
combination of
epidemiological analysis and
laboratory testing, along with
assistance from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), enabled the agency to
confirm that the sources of the
outbreak of illnesses were
peanut butter and peanut paste
produced by the PCA Blakely

The FDA has determined that
PCA distributed potentially
contaminated product to more
than 70 consignee firms, for
use as an ingredient in
hundreds of different products,
such as cookies, crackers,
cereal, candy and ice cream.
The agency has created a
searchable database for these
products, which can be found at
www.accessdata.fda.gov/script

On February 14, the
Tallahassee Symphony
Orchestra (TSO) celebrates
Valentine's Day in a concert
entitled "Timeless Love."
Miriam Bums, music director,
conducts this concert of
Tchaikovsky, McAlister and
Schumann to be performed
at Bradfordville First Baptist
Church at 8 p.m. Bring your
"sweetie" for a romantic
evening of beautiful music.
First on the program is the
classic tragedy of Shakespeare's
star-crossed lovers in
Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and
Juliet Overture Fantasy." This
tale has continued to inspire
artists since it was written
centuries ago, and Overture
Fantasy endures as the piece
of music which most magically
captures the moments of
despair and longing. Cymbal
crashes and dramatic key
changes represent scenes of

battle and confrontation, while
slower, quieter passages and the
famous "love theme" evoke the
yearning of the lovers.
Then the TSO warps forward
in time to love in the style of
the X Generation, with the "X
- Clarinet Concerto" composed
by Florida native Scott
McAllister.
McAllister's compositional
style utilizes dissonance and
embraces rhythm as equally
significant to melody, creating
a whole new style of clarinet
playing. "X" was immediately
successful and is performed
here by Frank Kowalsky,
principal clarinet of the TSO.
Kowalsky--Joseph A. White
professor of clarinet at Florida
State University--has performed
as principal clarinetist with
orchestras throughout the United
States, including the Naples
Philharmonic, Tallahassee
Symphony Orchestra and

ie's Day

Northwood Orchestra.
The concert ends with Robert
Schumann's penultimate
romantic "Symphony No. 2
in C Major." This, the longest
of Schumann's symphonies,
was completed in 1846--six
years after marrying Clara and
still in the idyllic stage of their
ultimately tragic marriage.
Four movements are alternately
vigorous and introspective, and
the sustained ending is marked
with ,a transcendent horn call--
to mark a close to the romantic
evening.
