announced the availability of
funds to assist eligible
households with their home
energy needs.
To- be considered eligible, for
this program, the applicant must
be 60 years of age or older, the
household income must be within
150 percent of poverty and the
utility bill for the applicant must
indicate a past due amount or
immediate threat of
disconnection.
Other assistance may be
provided, according to program
guidelines, such as propane,
portable heaters and blankets.

400-room hotel, golf course
part of Sweetwater Estuary
The developers behind Dr. J.
Crayton Pruitt's planned
Reserve at Sweetwater Estuary
project at Dekle Beach have
applied for a series of
amendments to the county's
comprehensive plan.
The changes would allow
them to construct 624
residential units, a 400-room
conference hotel, 150,000
square feet of commercial
space and an 18-hole golf
course.
According to County
Planning Director Danny
Griner, the county staff has
begun reviewing the lengthy
document and provided a copy
to the North Central Florida
Regional Planning Council.
Due to the size of the
document, Griner said he could
not predict at this time when
hearings will be scheduled.
Proposed amendments first go
before the county planning
board, which will make a
recommendation to the county
commission. If the commission
approves transmitting an
amendment, it is then sent to
the Florida Department of
Community Affairs (DCA) for
review and approval.
According to the documents
provided to the county, the
proposed development area
consists of 1,170 acres between
Dekle Beach Road and County

School and will march in Tuesday's inaugural
parade.
Two of Taylor County's
own--brothers Drew Thompson
and Wade Thompson--will be
among the Corps of Cadets
from the Virginia Military
Institute (VMI) marching in the
inaugural parade ushering in
President-elect Barack Obama
as the 44th president of the
United States.
This will mark the 100th
anniversary of the first time the
Corps marched in a presidential
inaugural parade and will be
the 13th inauguration in which
VMI cadets have marched.

The cadets will be bused to
Washington, D.C., the morning
of the parade (Tuesday, Jan. 20)
and will return to Lexington,

"They have been practicing
every day and have been told
that, as they are the biggest unit
in the parade, they will be
second to last in order to end it
with a splash," mom Terry
Thompson said.
"I think the boys are really
coming to appreciate what a
big event this will be and what
an honor it is to be a part of it,"
she said.
Drew is a senior at VMI,
majoring in mechanical
engineering. Wade is a
sophomore, pursuing a degree
in electrical engineering.
Drew will be commissioned
-as an ensign in the Navy in
May; Wade is on a Navy ROTC
scholarship.
The brothers were home-
schooled by their parents, Chet
and Terry Thompson of Perry,
and took part in dual
enrollment at North Florida
Community College.
The inaugural parade, which
will be televised, will begin at
the steps of the U.S. Capitol
and proceed along
Pennsylvania Avenue to the
White House.
The off-again, on-again
negotiations with Madison
Coach Frankie Carroll about
the vacant head coaching slot at
Taylor County High continued
Thursday and will likely carry
on at least another day.

Paul Dyal told the Perry
News-Herald just before
presstime that Carroll had
canceled a planned meeting at
3:30 p.m. Thursday.
"He called and said he had to
cancel our meeting and go
to a meeting with his
superintendent. He said he
would call us in the morning
(Friday)," Dyal said.
Carroll asked to be removed
from consideration earlier this
week but changed his mind a
few hours later.

With some $35,000
in delinquent meal
accounts--$7,000 coming in
just the first semester of this
year---the Taylor County
School Board took action
Tuesday night in an attempt to
recoup some of that money.
The board unanimously
approved a measure which will
create, effective Feb. 1, an
alternate meal program for
students whose accounts are
more than $10 in default.
According to District
Finance Director Vickie
McManus, students at Head
Start, Pre-K, Perry Primary
School and Taylor County
Elementary School have been
allowed to charge meals,
leading to the large balance.
"Some of the balances have
been allowed to carry forward
several years, resulting in
balances at all schools,"
McManus said.
Under the new plan, instead
of the regular school meals, the
students will be provided either
graham crackers and milk or
cheese toast and milk for
breakfast, and either a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich and
milk or a cheese sandwich and
milk for lunch. There will be no
charge for the alternate meals.

building inspection services,
which will mean a savings for
municipal taxpayers and an
influx of revenue for the
county.

heritage which is ours to enjoy. Especially, we love to ponder the
hardihood, industry and fundamental Christian character which
impelled those early settlers to make this area of Florida a place
which attracts all those fortunate enough to find this location."
Mrs. Leslie Morgan English
1873-1951
Miss Leslie D. Morgan was married to George W. English
and they were both from early settlers of the Shady Grove and
the Fellowship area of Taylor County and sometimes their
holdings were divided by the Madison County line. Their
offspring were: Redding, Matthew, John S., Annie (1. Lundy;
2. Engle), Ophia (Blanton), Wm., Nealie, Arie (1. Whitfield; 2.
Harrow) and G.W.
Mrs. English had the misfortune of losing her husband by
accident while he was
installing a wire fence on a
farm adjoining the site of one
of the county's original
turpentine plants near Shady
Grove. In a marvelous manner

together in making the family

community. Their lives have
consistently reflected the

John S. English
1894-1971
John English was a member of the large family of George W.
and Leslie Morgan English who lived near the Dowling Park
Naval Stores turpentine still just north of Shady Grove. They,
too, were numbered among those who made the "exodus" to
Plant City. He married Miss Lorena Harvill, a daughter of
Elder Enoch J. Harvill. They were the parents of Rosa Lee
(Murphy), Ella Marie (Green), Joyce Lorena (Williams), Ollin
and John L.
He lived in Plant City and Tampa during his residence down
in that area. He was engaged M1, ".
in truck farming and
strawberry production and
later was employed in a steel
plant in Tampa.
Upon retirement, he settled
in Plant City. This is another

Levi D. Green
1898-1973
Levi D. "Bud" Green was a native of Taylor County, the son
of Breckenridge and Annie Ellison Green. He married Miss
Annie B. Helton. They were the parents of Dorothy (Hodges),
Frankie and Betty Lou (Brickey).
He grew up in the Boyd area and in his early days lived on a
farm. But he became
interested in the logging and
li sawmill business, and for
almost a career, he was under
-employment of Brooks-
Scanlon.'He worked for them
at Scanlon, Dixie Camp and
Foley. He was a member of
the Perry Church of God and
in all his relationships with
his fellowmen, he subscribed
Levi D. Green to the tenets of that faith.
L.A. Bennett Sr.
1883-1964
Lee Ander Bennett was a native of Taylor County and he
married Mary Isabell Parker, the daughter of pioneer families
of Taylor County. They were the parents of: Augusta (Cox),
L.A. Jr., Orvis Jane (Chewning), Fannie Jane (Fields), Edith
Rachelle (Cox) and Ethel Macelle (Standish).
Mr. Bennett lived for the
greater part of his existence on
I"homesteaded" by his father at
Benotis, about one mile south I,
of Salem. His children
schools. By occupation, he
was a farmer and cattleman.
He served his district as
county commissioner at one
time. During his retirement
years, he resided at
Steinhatchee. L.A. Bennett Sr.
Norman LaValle
1903-1967
Norman LaValle came to Florida from Minnesota. He
married Floy Moses and they were the parents of: James
"Jimmy" E. and William "Billy."
He was qualified by education and training for dairy herd

and the timber industry. He
was also skilled at wood

working and fnishing. He

playing the violin and
trumpet. He was a member of
the Episcopal Church.
The many virtues which

Johnson lives at 505 Northeast Highway 51, across from the
main entrance of Steinhatchee Landing. She said there were
actually three levels to the award--gold, silver and bronze. I got a
bronze. They gave me all kinds of information to improve and I
learned a lot. For instance, I had a few invasive plants in my yard
that I didn't even know were invasive. I even did a few things right
that I didn't know I did right! We have a stone driveway and that
helps filter rainwater. Who knew? I just tried to maintain a natural
look to the yard and wanted low maintenance plants because I'M''
lazy! Next year I hope to get a silver or maybe even a gold," said
Johnson.

last home game
Four Taylor County High
seniors will be playing their
final regular season home
soccer match Saturday when the
Bulldogs host Port St. Joe.
- The seniors -- Philip Parga,
Cody Burkhardt, Ryan Bowden
and Jordan Smith -- will
lead the Bulldogs in the non-
district contest scheduled to get
underway at 1 p.m. at Dorsett
Stadium. The junior varsity will
play immediately following the
varsity game at 3 p.m.
TCHS Coach Rodney King
encouraged local fans to make
an afternoon of it.
"There will be hotdogs and
hamburgers being grilled as well
as an array of other concession
stand items. So please come out
and support the boys in the final
home game this season," King
said.
Last Friday night, the
Bulldogs traveled to Rickards
High for another close and
hard-fought match, coming out
on top 3-1.
Rickards opened up the
scoring about 30 minutes into
the game with a free kick that
was placed neatly in the right
corner of the goal.
The Bulldogs battled back as
Smith managed to guide a goal
in the back of the net with an
assist from Colby Murphy.
In the second half, after an
all-out assault on the goal by the
Bulldogs, sophomore Morgan
Pelt blasted an unassisted rocket
of a shot from about 35 yards
out, putting the Dawgs ahead
2- 1.
The Bulldogs kept pouring on
the heat and Ty Crowley sealed
the 'ictorN with a beautifulhtumn.

week in preparation for tryouts which begin Monday.
Next week's tryouts are for both varsity and junior varsity
players.
The Bulldogs will be coached this season by Reggie Wentworth
who will be assisted by Richard Canr. Both are former varsity head
coaches at TCHS.

When anglers look at the
nearly dry lake bottom at
Middle Lake Fish Management
Area (FMA), they often
bemoan results of the recent
drought. When Ken Denson,
fishery biologist and habitat
improvement specialist with
the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission
(FWC), looks at it, he sees
opportunity.
Denson, who has a lifetime.
of experience managing Central
Florida lakes, rolls up his
sleeves and gets to work when
lake water levels get low.
"In this day and age, Mother
Nature often needs a lot of help
when it comes to restoring fish
and wildlife habitat. Low water
levels allow us to get the job

had to pump the lake dry to
remove the excess sediments,"
Denson said.
The objective of the plan

Youth duck
hunt is set
The Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission
(FWC), in conjunction with the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
has established Jan. 31 and Feb.
1 as Youth Waterfowl Hunting
Days to help pass on the duck
hunting tradition.
This opportunity, also
provides a chance. 'or
experienced waterfowl hunters
to take youths afield to teach
them duck hunting techniques
and ethics.
This statewide, two-day
season allows children younger
than 16 years old to hunt with
adult supervision waterfowl,
coots and common moorhens.
Supervisors (18 years or
older) must be present and
may assist young hunters, but
are prohibited from hunting.
Licenses, permits and federal
duck stamps are not required
for youth hunters younger than
16 years of age.
The daily bag limit of ducks
is six and may consist of no
more than one black duck'
one mottled duck, one fulvous
whistling-duck, one pintail, two
redheads, three wood ducks,
two scaup, four scoters and four
mallards (of which only two
may be female).
Taking or attempting to take
canvasbacks or harlequin ducks
is illegal. All other species of
ducks may be taken. upto
six-bird limit.
The daily limit on coots and
common moorhens is 15, and
there is a five-bird limit on
mergansers, only two of which
may be hooded.
Canada and light geese may
be hunted statewide, with a'
daily bag limit of five.
Light geese include snow,
blue and Ross' geese. There is
a 15-bird daily bag limit on any
coifibitation of these' geesew-,' *. '*

Robert Earl Grubbs
Robert Earl Grubbs, 68, died
Jan. 14, 2009, at Shands at
Alachua General Hospital in
Gainesville.
Mr. Grubbs was a member
and deacon of Pleasant Grove
Baptist Church in Shady Grove
and a former member of Oak
Dale Baptist Church of
Newberry where he served as
deacon for many years. For the
past year, he and wife Sara had
lived in Hiawassee, Ga.
He was preceded in death by
his father, W. T. Grubbs, and
mother, Lucille Grubbs, two
brothers, John Larry Grubbs
and Rufus Grubbs, and son-in-
law, Kelly Davis.
Survivors include his wife,

Shady. Grve; two daughters,

shared his philosophy of
coaching high school football
and what he expected out of his
players and the community.
Carroll has been one of the
most successful football
coaches in the state since he
took over at Madison in 2002.
Carroll has a record of 84-8-
1 after six seasons at the
Madison helm. His teams have
played for the state title three
times, winning once.
This past season the
Cowboys lost to Jacksonville
Bolles in the Class 2A state
semifinals.
Parents snub free/reduced lunch program

according to the amendments
prepared by WilsonMiller, a
planning, design and
.engineering firm in
Tallahassee.
'- The language limits
development within the area to
624 residential units, a 400-
room conference hotel,
150,000 square feet of
commercial space, civic/public
bses, roads,
pedestrian/biking/cart trails,
'passive recreation boardwalks,
a kayak launching facility and
supporting infrastructure. The
golf course is limited to an 18-
hole golf course, an
approximately 11,000 to
12,000 square foot clubhouse, a
5,500 to 6,500 square foot
maintenance facility and
supporting infrastructure.
The second text amendment
yvill revise the comp plan's
conservation element policy.
Currently the policy prohibits
"industrial uses,' intensive
commercial uses and intensive
agricultural uses to be located
within or adjacent to the
surface waters of the county."
The proposed change would
replace that prohibition and
place in language stating the
county will "ensure" such uses
"will not be contrary to the
public interest and will not
degrade the existing' water
quality."
This change was previously
approved by the county
commission as part of a comp
plan amendment sponsored by
the former Taylor Energy
Center.
While the language was
found in compliance by DCA
in 2007, several citizens
objected to the amendments
-and filed for an administrative
hearing. After the TEC project
folded, the county discontinued
its efforts to get those
amendments approved.
. According to WilsonMiller,
Bradford County recently
approved a similar measure and
it was also found in compliance
by DCA.
The third text amendment
will revise the county's five-
year schedule of capital
improvements to reflect the
construction of the necessary
potable water wells and
distribution system, and
wastewater treatment plant and
force main to serve the
development with funding
provided by the developer.
Finally, the map amendment
will convert the 1,170 acres,
which are currently classified
as agricultural/rural residential
to the new Sweetwater Resort
Community type.
Included with the
amendments is a series of
supporting documentation,
including a hurricane
evacuation' analysis prepared
by PBS&J of Tallahassee,
which st 'tes "the project will
have minimal impacts on
clearance time and public
sheltering in Taylor County."

The agenda for next week's
commission meeting includes
an informational item on the
amendments. According to
County Administrator Jack
Brown, the item is just to alert
commissioners that the county
has received the amendments.
The Suwannee River Water
Management District approved
an environmental resource
permit for the project in June.
In 2007, Pruitt killed plans to
construct the $700 million
Magnolia Bay Marina and
Resort on the same property
after several governmental
agencies objected to the marina
and associated channel into the
gulf.

River Chamber of Commerce is gearing up to host its first
Steinhatchee Fiddler Crab Festival Saturday, Feb. 14.
Planned events include fiddler crab races, a car show, cook-
off, golf cart parade, community bazaar, carnival games, face
painting and a cake walk.
Other activities will include boat tours of the Steinhatchee
River, a "touch-tank" and live entertainment.

and Dawn-Marie, organizers

Renowned pianist Frampton
brings more than 30 years of
experience as a concert pianist

Hagan is one of the
Southeast's finest tenors. He
has become a well known

John Paul II and sang for the
inauguration of President
Jimmy Carter.
Dawn-Marie, Mezzo
Soprano, is one of Jamaica's

annual Hoggetowne Medieval
Taire on Jan. 24-25 and Jan.
31-Feb. 1. For two consecutive
weekends, tucked away in
he enchanted forest of the
l1achua County Fairgrounds
n Gainesville, a medieval
marketplace will come to life

journey back to the days of yore.
The bustling medieval
marketplace will showcase
more than 150 talented artisans
Erom all over the countryside
who will demonstrate their
l1d time skills and sell their
traditionall wares. At the
marketplace visitors can marvel
it time-honored traditions
af weaving, blacksmithing,
Leatherworking, woodcarving
md jewelry making.
"To take full advantage of
:he medieval magic, visitors
should arrive early," said Faire
Coordinator Linda Piper. "Each
morning, as the city gates open,
all the entertainers are awaiting
the arrival of the Hoggetowne
guests."
Jugglers, musicians and
lancers fill the streets and
stages with continuous live
revelry--a medley including
gypsy dancing, ancient music,
mystifying magic, knife
throwing and fire eating,
Performers mingle with the
crowds as the atmosphere fills
with the medieval sounds of
minstrels, harpists and many
"olde world" instruments.
"Plan to spend the entire day
at Hoggetowne. There is so
much to see and do, you'll be
entertained the whole time,"
Piper said. "People wait all
year for this highly anticipated
event."
Twice a day the trumpet
will sound the start of the
royal procession. Visitors and
peasants alike are invited to join
the king and queen to the joust
field for the royal event.
The "Birds of Prey" show
features trained hawks and
falcons who perform for the
pleasure of the crowds. Guests
can visit one of Hoggetowne's
mysterious fortune-tellers to
learn the secrets of the future,
or they may visit artisans and
have their hair braided or faces
festively painted.
One of the faire's most
notable attractions is the joust,
where knights in full plate
armor charge each other on
horseback battling for the honor
of their ladies. After the joust,
children are encouraged to meet
the knights and their steeds.
Take a break from shopping
and indulge in a hearty feast
fit for a king. At the food court
the selection varies from giant
turkey legs and succulent ribs to
authentic blooming onions and
mouth-watering sweet potato
fries.
On Friday, Jan. 30,
Hoggetowne hosts school day,
an educational experience for
students. Thousands of students
from all over Florida will
make a trip to the Faire for an
exciting experience, full of fun
activities such as face painting,
hair braiding and creating wax
hands. On this day, general
admission is half price, and
larger discounts are available
to school groups that register in
advance.
"It's so great to be able
to provide this experience
to children who learn about
medieval studies in their
schools," Piper said. "They get
a chance to actually come to the
faire and experience it."
The Hoggetowne Medieval
Faire is produced by the City
of Gainesville's Department of
Parks, Recreation and Cultural
Affairs.
On Saturday and Sundays,
faire hours are from 10 a.m. to
6 p.m., and on Friday's School
Day, Jan. 30, the faire will
open at 9:30 a.m. and close at
3 p.m.; tickets are half-price.
Admission on Saturdays and
Sunday is $12 for adults, $6 for
kids aged 5-17, free admission
for children 4 and under.
The Alachua County
Fairgrounds is located east of
