At first glance, seeing two
folks taking an afternoon stroll
along the back streets of
Steinhatchee hardly warrants a
second look.
But the contingency of
Secret Service agents trailing
behind the men might cause
you to look closer.
Former President Jimmy
Carter and his wife Rosalyn,
along with their children and
grandchildren, visited
Steinhatchee this past week--
their third trip to the coastal
community since 1994.
"We had 28 Carters in the
group and probably 20 or more
Secret Service agents," host
Dean Fowler of Steinhatchee
Landing said. -
"They stayed three nights
and left Tuesday morning
(Dec. 30). Jimmy said that next
week he was going to a
meeting with (President-elect
Barack) Obama at the White
House," said Fowler, who is on
first name terms with former
President Carter.
"My wife and I have been
personal friends with the
Carters for almost 40 years
now. This was their third trip
here and we always have a
great time. I dug out my

when we were campaigning

Deputy Wayne Padgett and
Inv. Dewayne Bratcher were
the first to arrive on the scene at
3685 Highway 98 West.
"The victim was inside the
home and the dog was at the
door. When they approached
the residence, the dog lunged at
them. Both men deployed their
Tasers, which temporarily
incapacitated the animal.
Deputy Padgett was able to get
inside the residence and bring
the victim outside to the
waiting ambulance. A mail
carrier, Todd Smith, helped get
the victim away from the dog
and was inside the home
holding the door. The victim
was on the floor screaming and

Lilliott passes the torch
For Supervisor of Elections
Molly H. Lilliott, Monday's
swearing-in ceremony for
Taylor County's constitutional
officers was bittersweet.
"I've done this for 42 years,
and I can honestly say that I
have enjoyed my work,"
Lilliott said. Her final day in
office was Wednesday, Dec. 31.
More than 200 attended a reception honoring
Supervisor of Elections Molly H. Lilliott, who has
retired after three terms in office. She is shown with

Lilliott, who was first elected
in 1996, took office Jan. 1,
1997, and served three
consecutive terms as
supervisor,
Early in 2008, she announced
her plans to retire.,
"It's time ,to let these young
women get to work and I have;
every c.pfidence in them, I'm
sure they will work with you on
the same level that I did...and if
they don't, call me!" Lilliott
said as she looked out at the
gathering of officials,
"I would especially like to.
acknowledge my stronghold,
Mrs. Catharin Norman. She has
been in this office much longer
than me. And she
was the one who built my
self-confidence where I felt
like I could handle this
position."
With those closing remarks,
Lilliott then turned to the
business of executing her duty
as supervisor during one final
swearing-in ceremony.

incident. ..
The dog was not a stray; it
was owned, by the family,
- Cruse noted.
However, due to the
placement of the final two
shots, the animal will
not be able to be checked for
rabies.
"In order to protect himself
and Inv. Bratcher, Padgett had
to place shots in different
locations to quickly end the
hostility of the dog," Cruse
said.
"Both Deputy Padgett and
Inv. Bratcher are to be
commended for their quick
actions and response. 'They
willingly placed themselves in
a daftgerbis situation to protect
the life of another. Without
their rapid response, the
outcome could have been
extremely worse.
"The actions of Mr. Smith
are also to be commended
because he helped get the
victim away from the dog and
acted in her best interests
instead of his own."
The attack occurred outside
the home and "went on for a

first night in Steinhatchee. The
next morning, President Carter
went deep sea fishing and
returned with a catch of
grouper.
"Jim Hunt (of Fiddler's)
cooked the fish and we set up a
tent down by the river and ate
outdoors. The weather was
perfect--beautiful and warm
and comfortable for everybody.
"On the (Dec.) 29th, they,
went fishing in-shore and
caught trout. That night, I fed
the whole group in the banquet
hall here...and baked fish was
on the menu.
"I also had plenty of boiled
peanuts waiting on them when
they arrived."
Family members took part in
a tour of the river aboard a
pontoon boat and "Jimmy was
impressed with how beautiful
our river is."
On Monday, President Carter
took another tour of the river,
this time aboard, an airboat
captained by Jared Hunt.
"President Carter is an avid
bird-watcher and was really
impressed w ithn the 'up close"
views of wildlife along the
river," Hunt's mother, Joyce
said.
The Hunt family (Jim, Joyce
and Jared along with Margie
Stewart and Betty Hunt)
hosted a small gathering at
their waterfront home for the
Carters Monday afternoon.
"They seemed to enjoy
themselves," Joyce said.
"I reminded Jimmy that I am
not getting any younger and
asked him not to wait another

With the state facing a more
than $2 billion budget deficit,
Florida's legislative leaders
officially called for a special
session in Tallahassee to
examine their options, which
include changes to user fees
and traffic fines, transferring
money from the state trust fund
and creating a $10 million
small business loan pilot
program to stimulate the
economy.
Senate President Jeff
Atwatter and House Speaker
Ray Sansom called for the
session Tuesday, Dec. 30, in a
proclamation filed with the
Florida Department of State.
The proceedings are set to
begin Monday, Jan. 5, at 11
a.m. and will continue through
11:59 p.m. on Jan. 16.
According to the
proclamation, the purpose of
the session includes
considering "legislation
making adjustments to fiscal
year 2008-09 appropriations
and to prior year
appropriations."
The legislature will consider
redirecting trust fund revenues
and balances to the general
revenue fund.
Other issues to be discussed
include:
legislation making minor
adjustments to existing user
fees, not including any fees
related to alcoholic beverages,
cigarettes or tobacco products;
legislation providing for
streamlining and flexibility of
educational programs, services
and use of funds;
legislation relating to
funding the state-required costs
under Article V of the Florida
Constitution by providing for
or making adjustments to fees
and fines relating to traffic
enforcement and to civil and
criminal fees, fines, and
penalties;
legislation authorizing a
pilot program to provide up to
$10 million in small business
loans to stimulate investment in
Florida's economy;
legislation authorizing
intergovernmental transfers;
and legislation, to conform
Florida law to such
adjustments, redirections and
authorizations.
"I look forward to continuing
to work with the Florida
Legislature to put our current
fiscal year in balance," said
Gov. Charlie Crist in response.
"Just as families across
Florida are tightening their
belts in response to the
challenging economic times,
we as elected officials must do
all we can to run government
and serve our citizens in a way
that is efficient and
responsible."
Until more details emerge as
to what actions the legislature
is planning, it is unclear what
effect they will have on local
governments.
Earlier this month, Taylor
County, Superintendent of
Schools Paul Dyal and Finance
Director Vickie McManus said
they were expecting
approximately $86,000 in
funding cuts from the special
session.
Commissioners to hold workshop, public
hearing Monday on 2 grant applications
The Taylor County
Commission will be
considering two new grant
applications Monday,
discussing the projects during a
special workshop and later
during its regular meeting.
Last month commissioners
scheduled a workshop to begin
at 3 p.m. at the Courthouse
Annex to discuss possible grant
applications to the Florida
Boating Improvement Program
(FBIP) and the Florida
Community Trust (FCT)
program.
The Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation
Commission administers the
FBIP and is charged with
,providing funding through
'competitive grants for projects
designed to serve the needs of
boaters and ;boating-related
activities on coastal and inland
waters within the state.
The grant award is up to
$200,000.
During its Dec. 16 meeting,
the board discussed several
potential projects for the grant,
including 1st Avenue North in
Steinhatchee, the federally
owned boat ramp on the
Aucilla River, Bowden
Landing and the newly
acquired property at the Keaton
Beach boat ramp.'
Commissioners ultimately
decided to postpone a decision
until their regular board
meeting, which is scheduled to
begin Monday at 6 p.m.
According to Grants
Coordinator Melody Cox, the
county "has been very
successful with grant
applications to the Florida
Boating Improvement Program
the past few years.
"We are currently finishing
up Phases I and* II for the
feasibility studies for a
proposed boat ramp at the
'Woods' site in Steinhatchee
with FBIP funds," she
added.
"We are in the final stages of
completingg the-Aucilla-Landing
boat ramp improvemenrtproject
also funded by FBIP. FBIP has
been very supportive and
funded the Keaton Beach Boat
Ramp."
During the workshop,
commissioners will also
consider a grant application to
the FCT program, which is a
state land acquisition grant
program that "provides funding
to local governments
and eligible non-profit
environmental organizations
for acquisition of community-
based parks, open space and
greenways that further outdoor
recreation and natural resource
protection needs identified
in local government
comprehensive plans."
Taylor County has been
awarded two FCT grants
within the past two years, Cox
said.
The first was the 43.45-acre
Keaton Beach Coastal Park
acquisition.
The second project, the
Steinhatchee Fish Market, is in
the appraisal process.
"If we wish to pursue a
project in 2009 it is critical to
get this application underway
as it is a very lengthy
application and requires
assistance from outside
-agencies ,.such as SRWM4I
and "Florida Fish & Wildlife'
Conservation Commission,"
Cox said in a memorandum.
"It is important to keep in
mind to be competitive, the.
project site must be located on
water. Projects located in
Steinhatchee receive additional
grant points as it is a
Waterfronts Florida Partnership
community. The FCT 2009
funding cycle is expected to be
very competitive as were the
past two years." ,
The county could receive up
to $6 million for an acquisition
project.

Keaton Beach
Fishing Report
Anglers flocking to
coast over holidays
BY PAT MCGRIFF
One More Cast Guide Service
' In like a Lion out Like a
Lamb?
I don't remember the first
report of 2008...but thinking
back I believe it was "out like a
lamb" ... "soft" in other words.
Gosh you would have
thought it was the FOURTH of
JULY at Keaton Beach Friday
and Saturday of last week!
Billy and I decided to go
offshore in the Woods 'n Water
Team TripleFish Triton around
noon, Friday, and I had to park
on the grass at the county ramp,
as in no parking spots left!
Jerry Cawthon at Keaton
Beach Marina said they put in
over 100 boats for the two-day
total.
Here are the reports from the
Marina:
Kenny and Hunter Luke of
Lake Park, Ga., with Roger
Smith and Ryan Broome of
Valdosta, simply waxed the
trout and reds both days as they
had 20 trout with 4 over 20
inches long on both Friday and
Saturday, with a 25 inch red
Friday and four reds over 23
inches long on Saturday. This
crew fished MirrOlure's Catch
2000s in 2 feet or less of water
to secure this fine two-day
catch!
Norm Patrica of Live Oak
had his limit of five trout from
3-7 feet of water fishing with
Berkley Gulp New Penny
Shrimp;
Willie Odom of Madison and
Cole Ballard of Quitman. Ga.,
iad i'grbupler," with a '5
pounder to top off the box,
while fishing in 61 feet of
water with frozen cigar
minows
Frank and Drew Ruttinger
with Perryman Ellison, all of
Valdosta, Ga., had nine trout, a
blue and a flounder fishing live
shrimp under a Cajun Thunder
Saturday.
George Armstrong, Paul
Amundson and Bert Strickland,
all of Perry, had 12 trout with
one over 20 inches long
fishing with Berkley Gulp
shrimp in four feet of water.
Paul, Brook and Chelsea
Kinsley of Madison had 14
trout fishing with Berkley Gulp
shrimp in three to four feet of
water.
Cal Beanblossom, Glenn
Floyd and Michael Roberts of
Sylvester, Ga., had 14 trout
fishing with Assassin five inch
shads in clear/gold and
Goldfish pattern from 1-4 feet
of water.

Blount leads
the Ducks in
fourth quarter
Perry native LeGarrette
Blount proved to be the closer
Tuesday night as his Oregon
team defeated Okahoma State
42-31 in the Holiday Bowl in
San Diego, Cal.
Blount stayed on the
sidelines for much of the night
watching his teammate
Jeremiah Johnson rush for 119
yards including an electrifying
76-yard touchdown run in the
first quarter.
But Blount came on to seal
the game in the waning
minutes. His 40-yard jaunt to
the Cowboy 5 kept a Duck
drive alive and the clock
ticking.
He sealed the game on' the
Ducks' (10-3) next possession
with a 29-yard touchdown run
with 3:01 left in the game. On
the play, Blount burst off right
tackle, hurdled two players at
the 18, then dragged two more
into the endzone the final 10
yards.
On the night, Blount gained
74 yards on just 7 carries. His
touchdown was his 17th of the
season, an Oregon record.
He also rushed for 1,002
yards in. 2008, his sixth-
straight 1,000-yard season
dating back to his sophomore
year at Taylor County High.
With Johnson graduating,
Blount is expected to return for
his senior season at Oregon as
one of the top running backs in
the nation.

The Taylor County
High School Class of
1965 will mark its
65th anniversary
since graduation in
2009. Featured here
is a look at the sports
teams which brought
s-p-i-r-i-t to the
football field and
basketball courts.
S .J .. ... ... *
Members of the TacoHi 1943-44 football team: (back row, left to right) C.H. Robinson, coach; Frank Polhill, Harold Whitfield, Leonard
Cone, Buddy Bryant, Billy Bolton, Bishop Clark, Horace Millican and Martin Agner; (middle row, left to right) Jimmy McCall, Bunny
Dowling, Cullen Thompson, Willie Joe Gunter, Johnny Mantzanas, Tommy Puckett, Chubby Thompson, Therion Tedder and Everett Blair;
(front row, left to right) Henry Stokes, manager; Billy George, Erwin Fleet, Rudolph Ashton, Kenneth Kassell, Adolph Kemp, Edd Sapp,
Charles Guy, Barney Johnson, Hal Thompson and Ralph Reddick, manager.
Football Highlights
The Taylor High School squad, composed of 26
players and managed by Henry Stokes and Ralph
Reddick, completed its 1943 football season with
a total of 174 points for and only 24 points
against them. Under the excellent guidance of
Coach Robinson the team won eight games and
lost only one. Bill George was elected captain
and Adolph Kemp was elected alternate captain.
These two boys, along with six other seniors, Bill
Bolton, Martin Agner, Erwin Fleet, Cullen
Thompson, Leonard Cone and Horace Millican,
will be greatly missed on next year's team.
Game By Game: Madison 0- Perry 7
Rated as the underdogs, the Taylor team surprised a
large gathering on Lanier Field by defeating Madison 7 to
C. Perry's scoring play was a beautifully executed pass
from southpaw Charles Guy to freshman Willie Jo Gunter,
who took the ball on Madison's 35-yard line and dashed for
the score eluding two Madison players by beautiful side-
stepping. Having scored, Perry settled back to play a
defensive game, and led, by center, Buddy Bryant, held
Madison scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Girls' Basketball
Taylor County High School is indeed proud of
the record of the girls' basketball team since this
is the second season through which it has gone
undefeated. The girls made a total of 269 points
with their opponents making a total of only 159
points. Jackie Tuten, high scorer of last year, also
was unchallenged this year, making 113 points
out of the total 269. The team selected Jackie
Tuten as captain and Iris Dee Wilson as
alternative captain.
Taylor Basketeers
The Taylor High Boys' Team completed its 1944
season with 12 wins and six losses. Adolph Kemp
was the high point man for the season with 197
points. Frank Polhill was runner up with 87 points
and was followed closely by Martin Agner and
Bishop Clark, who made 74 and 66 points
respectively. Completing the first five, Billy
George made 52 points.
