An early morning fire destroyed a Slaughter Road residence Tuesday.
Taylor County Fire/Rescue responded to the scene around 2 a.m.,
finding the home already fully involved.
The homeowners were not present at the time of the fire and no one was
injured. Employees at a nearby business reported the fire.
When crews arrived, the fire had spread to a nearby .power pole and
several trees. While the home was a total loss, a shed on the property was
saved.
Fire crews remained at the scene for more than three hours, making sure
no "hot spots" remained.
Fire/Rescue Lt. Carl McAfee and Firefighter/EMT Jeremy Denmark
responded to the fire, along with volunteers John Fish, Donald Bowden,,
Bruce Simmons, Ken Parker and John Sauls.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

selected the top 10 essays from all
the entries and narrowed the field

A family home was reduced to rubble following an early morning fire Tuesday. The

new industries with better paying
jobs because many of the working
families in District 10 have annual
incomes well below Florida's
average.

provide for themselves and their
future families. Our high schools
face unacceptable drop-out rates.
"The American Dream of home
ownership is being threatened by
the dual burden of rising property
taxes and higher insurance rates.

made an effort to solve these

TORNADO HITS BEACHES!
Heavy property damages were
recorded when a tornado struck
Dark Island and Cedar Island, but
no lives were lost. Aerial pictures
showed the damage to the islands
which was estimated to approach a
quarter of a million dollars.
Dr. Walt Beers was pictured
among the wreckage of his house
on Cedar Island; a boat in the
foreground had been parked at a
trailer some distance from the
house.-
Six homes were categorized as
total losses, including those
belonging to H.P. Padgett,
Broward Padgett and Douglas
Padgett;
The Craft Bee factory,
belonging to Bill Craft, was totally
destroyed along with his home and
three boats;
The roof was blown off the
community store at Cedar Island;
Only one wall of the Major
Holmes house on Cedar Island was
left standing after the tornado, and

Family fun in Steinhatchee
Steinhatchee School hosted a Family Night Out Oct. 23 in the Family Center. Parents and their children were greeted by Principal Sylvia Ivey and
SSuperintendent of Schools Oscar Howard Jr., after which they were served pizza and salad for dinner. The teachers and reading coach, Kathy Jester, led the
Families in hands-on math and reading activities. Mrs. Jester demonstrated how easy it is to make your own book and guided the parents and their children in
producing their very own. After this session, the families participated in math activities, as teachers demonstrated how families can work together to solve

As the land resource planning

trades and purchases for Procter &


Gamble's one million acres of
Florida timberlands.
Curtis graduated from the
University of Georgia with a B.S.
in forest resource management in
1979.
He resides in Lake Bird with his

granted a continuance motion
Thursday in the DUI
manslaughter case against
Michael Warf, 39.
Warf was arrested in May for
the death of Cynthia Miller, 51,
who was killed in a head-on
collision Dec. 12, 2006, on Golf
Course Road.
His attorney, Assistant Public
Defender Fred Castleman, told
the judge that "the last local
interview is set for Nov. 19. We
have a deposition set with the
investigation sergeant from the
Florida Highway Patrol. We
have already completed several
other depositions with numerous
law enforcement and medical
personnel."
Castleman also noted that the
report from the medical
examiner had not yet been filed.
Warf was driving a red Toyota
4-Runner that crossed the
centerline on Golf Course Road
and crashed head-on with a
white Chrysler Concord sedan
driven by the victim.
A report from the Florida
Department of Law
Enforcement (FDLE) showed
that Warfs blood alcohol level
was approximately three times
the legal limit (.242) when the
crash occurred.
Warf himself continues to
recover from injuries he
received in the collision and
walks with the aid of crutches.
Two other passengers in
Miller's vehicle--Ashley
Williams, 18, and Alicia Harris,
19--also sustained serious
injuries.

downtown Perry's Christmas Open

Southwestern charm adds to this year's Tour of Homes


"You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can't
take Texas out of the girl!" That's the way Tour Co-
Chairs Iris Parker and Jeanne Raulerson introduce
Diana McRory and her home which will be featured on
this year's Christmas Tour of Homes.
McRory custom-designed her rustic Southwestern
home and sub-contracted the work on it for more than
a year, moving in late 2006. The home sits on a one-
acre lot located at 504 Judson Dr.
"The pine log exterior and steep, copper metal roof
hint at the home's casual interior," said Parker. "The
front rocker porch and double-paned doors warmly
welcome you into the foyer and beyond, where nine-
foot white pine interior walls graduate to the 14-foot
cathedral ceiling with beams."
Floors for this home were made of Australian
cypress hardwood.
"The heart of the home is the open great room and
kitchen with dark bronze lighting fixtures," Parker
added. !'The focal point is the 14-foot flagstone
fireplace with a redwood mantle where spot lighting
will soon display her newest painting featuring her
seven grandchildren which should be finished in time
for the tour." On both sides of the fireplace and built-

where she displays her Southwestern-inspired.

"Sitting atop the custom pine cabinetry is her copper
collection. Black glossy appliances and an open sink
are accented with copper fixtures that blend well with
the black granite tile counters which are accented with
copper flecks. Double-paned doors lead to the back
porch and a fenced area designed and used solely by
her Yorkies."
McCrory's home features a split floor plan, with a
guest bedroom as well as a third bedroom which was
designed to be open to the great room and used as a
grandchildren's den.
The master bedroom also has nine-foot white pine
walls and a 12-foot cathedral ceiling with beams, as
well as a built-in entertainment center. The master
bath has custom pine cabinetry with golden ochre
marble on the floor, vanity, Whirlpool tub surround
and custom shower featuring Venetian bronze fixtures.
The tour is scheduled for Sunday, Dec.2, from 1-5
p.m. Tickets are $15 and currently available from
members of the Perry Woman's Club which annually
sponsors the event.

Defensive end Jarvis McGrew
and kicker Ty Crowley were
selected to the all-district team and
offensive linesman Kendall '
Thompson joined NMcGrew on the
all-senior squad.


McGrew has been in .on 67

one fumble for a touchdown.
Crowley, a sophomore,

folks aren't aware of. This means
you may only harvest two turkeys
during the archery, crossbow,
muzzleloading gun and fall turkey
seasons combined.

Gadsden and Leon counties and
the Ochlockonee River may be
hunted every day during the open
season.
On Lake lamonia and Carr Lake

Additionally, on Lake
Miccosukee in Leon and, Jefferson
counties, the use of internal
combustion engines of more than
five horsepower is prohibited,.
The Canada goose season is
Nov. 17-25, with the second phase
Dec. 1 Jan. 30. Canada geese
may be taken only in Florida
waters of Lake Seminole in
Jackson County that are south of
SR 2, north of the Jim Woodruff
Dam and east of CR 271. The daily
bag limit is five, and shooting
hours are one-half hour before
sunrise to sunset.
The FWC and the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service have designated
Feb. 2-3 as Youth Waterfowl
Hunting Days. During this period,
only children under 16 years old,
supervised by an adult .(18 years
old or older) may hufnt waterfowl,
coots and common moorhens.
Shooting .hours, daily bag .limits
and species restrictions are the
same as for the regular waterfowl
seasons.
Hunters taking migratory game
birds in Florida are required to
have a Migratory Game Bird

notice changes to the road system.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC)
has launched an access plan that
will upgrade some roads and close
others ,as part of an effort to
provide access to area users,
protect cultural resources and
enhance wildlife habitat.
The plan affects access points to
the area as follows:
*All entrances along U.S. 98 and
SR 59 will be accessible Nov. 1 -
Jan. 15. This allows deer-dog
hunters continued access so they
can' control their dogs and prevent
trespassing on nearby private
property.
*The small-game unit entrance


south of U.S. 98 will be open Sept.
15 March 15 to accommodate
gun, archery and small-game
seasons.
*Outside of these time frames,
six entrance/exit points providing
access to the entire area will be
open to the public for vehicles.
FWC staff divided the road
network in the area, including parts
of Jefferson and Taylor counties,
into primary roads, secondary
roads, unimproved roads and
service and closed roads.
Primary roads are in high-use
areas and will be maintained and
accessible to vehicles in all types
of weather. About 53 miles of
secondary roads will support two-
wheel-drive vehicles in most
instances, but inclement weather

SAFETY







1. Control the direction of your firearm's muzzle.
Carry your firearm safely,"keeping the safety on'
until ready to shoot. Keep your finger off the
trigger until ready to shoot.

3. Identify your target and what is beyond it.
Know the identifying features of the game you

Pixar cooks up a winner


with animated 'Ratatouille'


There was a lot riding on the June release of
Disney/Pixar's "Ratatouille," much more than one would
usually expect from a summer animated feature.
Many eyes around Hollywood were fixed on the
mouse's rat tale, as it marked the first Pixar movie
released following the company's purchase by Disney.
"Ratatouille," directed by Brad Bird, came out at a
time when the two companies were still trying to feel
each other out, with Pixar employees complaining about
Disney's promotional campaign for the film while
Disney animators were saying they felt they were being
pushed to the side.
While the film was met with general praise from

"Rdaatouille" is the "
tale ( no pun
intended) about a
French rat \%ith an
.exceptional sense of
smell. His life's ambition is to become a gourmet chef in
Paris. Building on that somewhat simple premise, Bird,
who also wrote the screenplay, adds many levels to his
story with the theme of someone who wants to grow
beyond the role he was born to fill.
You have to admit, the film was an ambitious and
daring project, for sure. Its title is so confusing most of
its posters come with a pronunciation guide. And who
really wants to think about rats in the kitchen?
The beauty of the film is that it works.
As "Ratatouille" opens, we meet Remy (voiced by
Patton Oswalt), a rat living with his very extended
family. His extraordinary sense of smell gives him a
unusual taste for the finer foods in life (for a rat, at least).
His father, however, sees his gift as an easy way to
detect poisons, and thus Remy's life becomes a mind
numbingly boring series of food sniffings.
His life takes a turn, however, after he watches a


television program about a famous chef and decides he
wants to do more with his life than just be a food-sniffer.
As luck would have it, Remy gets his chance when he
finds himself alone in Paris. He even locates the bistro
once owned by the very chef he idolizes. There he meets
the down-on-his-luck Linguini (Lou Romano), and they
decide to help each other.
Unlike last year's "Cars," which, despite its beautiful
animation, had a rather pedestrian plot, "Ratatouille"
feels very new and fresh.
I give much of that credit to writer/director Brad Bird,
whose resume includes the powerful "Iron Giant" in
1999 and "The Incredibles," winner of the Academy,
Award for Best
Animated Feature.

writers visited
Parisian restaurants and consulted top chefs to make
sure everything was authentic.
I've said several times before that animation is not a
genre (a type'of movie) but simply a medium (another
way to tell a story). Directors like Bird get this and that's
why his films resonate so well with audiences of all
ages.
Surprisingly, "Ratatouille" is only available in a single
disc-DVD release (as well as BluRay) instead of the
usual two-disc sets Pixar releases.
The extras include: "Lifted," the short film that
preceded "Ratatouille" in theaters; an all-new short
features Remy and his brother Emile as they give the
history of the rats; three deleted scenes in storyboard
form with introductions by Bird;' and a short-
,documentary with Bird and Chef Thomas Keller as they
discuss the similarities of making a good film and
cooking good food.
