announced that it expects its
profitability for the July-
September quarter to be in the
range of 32-35 cents per share
including a $2.2 million (6 cents
per: share) one-time favorable tax

administrative law judge set to
oversee the hearing may have a
conflict of interest due to his
mother's position on Buckeye's
board of directors.
In a notice filed Thursday, the
petitioners, who objected to the
Florida Department of Community
Affairs decision in August to find
the amendments in compliance
with state and local regulations,
filed a 'notice of potential conflict
involving presiding Judge T. Kent
Wetherell II.

Five juveniles ranging in age
from 14 to 17, along with two
adults, have been arrested for the
armed robbery of a pizza delivery
driver late Monday night, Oct. 15.
Rosanna M. Henderson, 19;
Dominque L. Dixon, 18; Bryant B.
Pritchett, 17; Dante R. White, 14;
Qualin M. Murphy, 15; and
Chedrick L. Burrell, 17; all face
armed robbery charges.
Kolby L. Upshaw, 15, was
charged as an accessory.
The robbery occurred at
approximately 9:40 p.m. An order
was placed at a local pizza
restaurant for delivery to Bryant
Street. .
"The victim/driver delivered the
pizza to Bryant Street and was
flagged down in the back parking
lot of the Living Word Ministries
Church at the intersection of
Bryant Street and Colson. Upon
his arrival, two suspects engaged
the delivery driver in conversation
about their order and not having
money for the pizza. While talking
to these two suspects, four other
suspects ran up to the truck and
ordered the driver to hand over all
his money," a spokesman for the
Perry .Police Department (PPD)
said.
"Three of these suspects were
armed with handguns. The victim
complied and gave them an
undisclosed amount of money. He
was then further asked if he had
any money in his truck and ordered
at gunpoint to retrieve it. The
-driver again complied and gave the


suspects more money. The
suspects then took the money and
pizza, and ran from the scene."
A joint investigative effort by
PPD officers and Taylor County
Sheriffs Office (TCSO) deputies
resulted in all seven suspects being
arrested.
An undisclosed amount of
cash and one handgun were
recovered.
The investigation is on-going.

Heather Murphy, Ptl. Gina Deeson,
Ptl. Jesse Cordova, Sgt. Lin Gray,
Detective Ben Flowers, Deputy
Kevin Johns and Deputy Brian

As of presstime Thursday, the
two adult suspects--Henderson and
Dixon--remained at the Taylor
County. Jail. Each was given a
$50,000 bail.
Bond information on the five
remaining suspects was not
available due to their status as
juveniles.


Tax exemption back


on the ballot for '08
Taylor County voters will once again decide whether to authorize
the county commission to grant tax exemptions for new and
expanding business after the county commission agreed Tuesday to
place a referendum on the Jan. 29, 200S8. presidenual primary ballot.
The commission had the ability to grant such exemptions fpr more
than 20 years before a referendum asking voters to reauthorize the
ability failed by 400 votes in November 2006.
The vote tallies were 2,884 against re-authorizing and 2.481 for it.
The Taylor County De\elopment Authority Board of Directors
voted during their Sept. 27 meeting to request the commission place
the referendum on the January ballot.
According to Taylor CountY Economic Developer Rick Breer. the
tax exemption \\ as onl\ used once, as part of an economic incentive
.package used to draw a $7 5 million expansion to the Lance Foods
plant here rather than to a similar plant in Texas.
He added that the expansion resulted in more than 50 newj.obs. and

Commissioners uphold sexual


predator residency restrictions


'A request from the Taylor
County Sheriffs Office to change
the language of the county's sexual
offender ordinance (prohibiting
certain offenders from living
within 2,500 feet of designated
areas in which young people
congregate) was denied by the
county commission Tuesday night.


According to County
Administrator Jack Brown, the
TCSO made the request in an
effort to make the ordinance more
likely to survive a challenge in
court, but commissioners strongly
objected to language changes that
would have reduced the 2,500 foot
prohibitions to 1,000.


State statutes state have a 1,000
foot boundary, but allow local
governments to increase it.
Commissioners voted
unanimously in June 2006 to
create an ordinance more than
doubling the boundary to 2,500.

Officer Cricket Bailey and K-91
partner Buddy played a key role in
the apprehension of an armed
burglary suspect Tuesday.
The K-9 team was called into
service to assist the Jefferson
County's Sheriffs Office. .
The Jefferson County Sheriffs
Office received a complaint of a
burglary in progress about 10:30
a.m. in the northeast section of the
county Tuesday, according to FWC
Lt. Kent Harvey, supervisor for
Leon and Jefferson counties.
A resident came upon the
suspect, James Waldon Jr., 29, of
Valdosta, Ga., while Waldon was
burglarizing the homes. The
suspect fled, but the resident was
able to get a license plate number
and a description of the truck.
"The sheriffs office discovered
the truck had been stolen from
Waldon's father and that the
suspect was in possession of a
revolver. The truck and gun had
been stolen in Valdosta, along with
some lawn equipment. Apparently,
the suspect attempted to pawn the


stolen equipment in Tallahassee,"
Harvey' said.
"The; suspect had also stated to
family :members that he wasn't
going back to jail, and he wouldn't
be taken alive. He had been
released from prison Oct. 8,"
Harvey' said.
Jefferson County Sheriff David
Hobbs was responding to the call
when he saw the suspect .and
attempted a traffic stop. The
suspect refused to stop and led the
sheriffs, office units on a pursuit
that ended when the vehicle
crashed' inside the city limits of
Monticello. The suspect then fled
on foot with the firearm, Harvey
said.
A reverse 9-1-1 call was put out
to residents in a three-mile radius
of the area describing the nature of
the crime and giving information
on the suspect along with
preventative measures to take. The
Monticello Police Department
responded and locked down three
local schools.
FWC personnel offered
assistance, and the sheriff
requested air support, if possible,


and additional officers. FWC
officers Stefanie Wilcox, Mike
Keever, Mike Fish, Billy Kemp,
Charles Higman, Scott Olson, Tom
Shipp and Harvey responded,
along with pilot Frank Utermohlen
with an FWC helicopter, Harvey
said.
A perimeter had been
established around an eight-to-10-
block area from where the suspect
crashed the truck. A command post
was set up and manned by deputies
and FWC staff.
"It was determined the suspect
was probably waiting for nightfall
to try to escape. The.perimeter was
maintained and the FWC
helicopter kept the suspect pinned
down. As night fell, we decided to
keep the aircraft in their and have
a K-9 unit enroute in case the
suspect was spotted," Harvey said.
Shortly after dark, the helicopter
pilot started using his search light
and night-vision device to locate
the suspect. The helicopter was in
the air for about 15 minutes when
the suspect tried to make a break

AIR CONDITIONING!
A delegation of 75 students
appeared before the Taylor County
School Board' to request air
conditioning for the high school.
The leader of the group was Lee
Shiver, president of the Taylor
h County High School Student
Council .
Gene Scott, ho%\e\er, \%as
credited with making a "forceful
and well reasoned speech,
suggesting that a bearable
atmosphere is essential to a good
education."
Surveys had been conducted to
show that the average classroom
temperature after the lunch period
was 92 to 95 degrees.
Scott also maintained that fans
only lowered the temperature by
doe degree, while opening the
windows let in the distraction of
outside noise as well as "hordes of
bugs."
Greg Parker also spoke on
behalf of the group, reminding
board members that a learning
atmosphere "includes more than
books."'
Board Chairwoman Helen
Panebianco thanked the students
for appearing, but advised them
that no funds were presently
available for such a major
improvement.


FINAL 3 CANDIDATES
GET THE SPOTLIGHT
For weeks, the Perry News-
Herald had been spotlighting
candidates for the 1972 Forest
Festival Queen pageant. The final
three appeared in this edition:
Suzan Lockhart, Kathy Puckett
and Retta O'Quinn. In all, there
were 16 candidates.
Also prominently featured was a
picture of Miss Georgia Puckett,
reigning queen, who would crown
the new winner.

fry" was expected to attract 8000,
which is 500 more than the
previous year.
In the "glittering array of

expected for the banquet; tickets

and Miss Florida.'
Peck Smith. was pictured in this
edition, unloading 650 pounds of
grits donated by the Quaker Oats
Co. for this year's fish fry.

Twelve going on 21
The childhood years went too fast and before- I.
knew it I was approaching my teens. Of course .
thought all the world was at my feet and I would liv e-,
"happily ever after." But, reality is a wise teacher...;d:
who reminds you that age comes with,
responsibility.
This was the year Mama decided to get her
nursing degree. So, with her in school each week,:"
household chores fell to my lot. At first, it was funi',
as I took over the cleaning and care of youngerf"
sister Leta. It seemed much like playing house as.
we had done in years past. Trouble was, the playing
house game was something we did whenever we :
wanted, whereas real housekeeping demanded my
attention daily, whether wanted or not.
Mama left early each morning to make the long.-,
drive to Tallahassee and Daddy was usually gone-
before sun-up. My sister-in-law Geraldine w6a' :
always close by to' offer assistance, but I wanted toi
prove my grown-up independence by "doing it
myself." Just getting a first-grader ready for school:i
could turn into a major job. As I learned right awaj,?.
Leta had a mind of her own about her appearance.
Since I thought I was the boss and that her opiniQqr ,
didn't count, there were some mornings we bare
made it to the bus stop on time.
Determined to prove my worthiness I dared Leta
to tattle to Mama. I threatened her with bodily harfm;:3.
as well as telling her I would send her to school:-:
dressed like a monster from outer space. Well, she--"
didn't tell Mama but. she always managed to
whisper my shortcomings to Daddy. Those whispers -,
resulted in the' dreaded father/daughter talk4.'_.,!
Daddy could reduce me to a crybaby with his gentle .P
rebuke, no matter how grown-up I pretended to be ia:
As I proved my ability to handle responsibility, I -
was given more freedom to make my own choices in- '
life. I was giddy with happiness when I was allowed-.,

Daring to open the bottle for a sniff, I felt as if it hid.,
the magic of the universe with just one drop applied1
behind each ear. And oh, the glamour of the orange.
glow of the lipstick as I touched it to the inside 4
my wrist to see the color. I quickly made my way .
the check-out counter to pay for my treasures aria
headed home to apply both for the full effect..
Drenching myself with the exotic liquid, but n
quite brave enough to apply the lipstick; I sat.dovs^
at the supper table. Everything proceeded as.j
normal with Daddy filling us in on his day !
adventure and Mama making sure the food supp||
never ran out. Well, let me say everything we'-
normally until my brother Ted raised his nose in t
air and sniffed. "Something smells in here," he sait -

sniffing like a bloodhound on a coon's trail, finaltjT
landing directly behind me. "Ugh, you sme5;:
strange," he bellowed. With my secret exposed I r
from the table, my pride in shreds. All of my dream
of becoming a stunning teenager lay bare before n -
family and I was crushed. Mama followed me a33

"We're making it easier for child
predators to get close to our
children," Commission Clay
Bethea said of the proposed
changes. "We're backpedaling and
I'm not willing to do that."
The other commissioners also
objected to reducing the
boundary.
Only one person from the public
spoke during the public hearing.
"I'm inclined to agree with
Clay," said Carole'Taitt. "We need


it to be as strict as possible."
Commissioner Mark Wiggins
made a motion to reject the new
ordinance and Commissioner Pat
Patterson seconded.
The measure passed
unanimously.
According to the current
ordinance, offenders whose
victims were under the age of 16
are not allowed to establish
residence within 2,500 feet of any
school, designated public school
bus stop, day care center, park,
playground or other places where
children regularly congregate.


Exceptions to the restrictions
include those who had established
their residence prior to the
adoption of the ordinance, those
who were minors when they
committed their offense and were
not tried as adults, those who are
currently minors and those who
established residence before the
school, day care center, etc., was
established. Penalties for violating
the ordinance include fines up to
$500 and a 60-day imprisonment
for the first offense and up to a
$1,000 fine and 12 months in
prison for subsequent offenses.

19 North near the Jefferson
Nursing Home. This was about
500 yards north of our perimeter,"
Harvey said. "The citizen gave an
accurate description of the. suspect
and a general area where Waldon
was hiding. We shifted the
perimeter north."
It was at this time that FWC
Officer Bailey and K-9 Buddy
arrived on scene.
After getting a description of the
suspect and being briefed about the
firearm he was carrying, Olson,

during his arrest, "I give up. It's not
worth it. I can't get away from you
all. I can't take it anymore."

The suspect-has been charged
with the following:
In Florida: armed burglary,
dealing in stolen property,
defrauding a pawn broker,
possession of a firearm by a
convicted felon, felony fleeing and
eluding an officer. More charges
are pending regarding the
burglaries.
In Georgia: felony theft of a
motor vehicle, felony theft of
equipment and felony theft of a
firearm.

Month" and presented the signed copy to 2007 Taylor County Junior Miss Lauren Hardin. The
52nd annual celebration shifts into high gear next week with the opening of the carnival on
Wednesday, the "Fabulous Festival Fireworks" on Thursday and the annual Bed Race.on Friday.

Trout fishing got real tough,
oyer the weekend, as the recent,
high pressure took over and laid
the w-i-n-d down to basically no
drift.
--I took out Keith Watson of
Valdosta, Ga., and Gregory and
Ryan Jones of Madison, Ala.,
Wednesday and we had 14 trout
and four reds fishing live pinfish
under Cajuns in 3 4 feet of
water. We had three over twenty
inchs long and a 25 inch red to top
the box.
Friday, I had Douglas Tarver and
Pete Oddi of Douglas, Ga., and we
brought in seven trout, three reds
" and two Spanish. We released six
or seven keeper reds while tossing
back the same number of short
reds. Again we had two over
Twenty.
Saturday, I took the same two
guys out and we couldn't find a
redfish?' There was literally no
breeze for over three hours. We
managed eight trout but fished six
hours for them. Again, we fished
live pinfish under Cajuns, but

caught most of our fish out in 6 -
8 feet of water.
Rick and Ryan Youmans with
Jimmy Gay and Brock Vickery all
of Valdosta, Ga., had 10 trout (one
over 22 inches long), a few black
sea bass and two reds, Saturday,
fishing 5 6 feet of water with
Gulp.
Mike and Deborah Martin, also
of Valdosta, Ga., had 10 trout,
with two over 20 inches long and
their two reds, while fishing live
pinfish under Cajuns on Saturday.
On Sunday, Ray Carlisle and
his son-in-law J. Johnson limited
on trout after catching many
juveniles, small grouper and black
bass. They also caught one 20
inch red and a 38 inch king
mackerel just off Dekle Beach bird
rack in 4 feet of water. Weather
was forecasted as not so good but
became beautiful after 10 a.m.
Offshore Report
Sunday, Mike Dooley with
Rhett and Eddie Moore all of
Valdosta, Ga., made it out to 60
feet of water and had. 9 grouper and
2 kings while trolling Mann's
Stretch Thirty Plus plugs!

"It's taken a lot of hard work and
we continue to train very hard
preparing for the playoffs starting
Oct. 26th," said Cantrell. "Being
ranked number one in the country
is rewarding, but my teammates
and I won't be satisfied until we
win the National Championship."

"If we win that one then we'll
play the Regional's at home and
the National Championship

Holmes returns to Perry for Youth Day


Mass choir will sing
The Rev. Victor L. Holmes, a Perry native, will be the keynote speaker
for Youth Day services at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday,
Oct. 21, at 3 p.m.
Raised by his grandmother, Christine Holmes, the speaker was active in
New Jerusalem Baptist Church as a child, baptized at the age of 11, served
as a junior deacon and is remembered for his "gifted voice."
Holmes graduated from Florida A&M University in 1993 with a
Bachelor's degree in public administration. He is currently furthering his
education at Gupton-Jones, Mortuary School of Funeral Services in
Atlanta, Ga., and pursuing a degree in mortuary science. He also serves as
associate minister for Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta where
he is active in youth- ministry.
Mt. Olive invites all friends of the community to gather for Youth Day
and to hear Holmes speak.

Business Administration in
accounting and was employed by

Corrections as a senior
management analyst supervisor.
Survivors include: his wife,

and Erika Grambling, both of
Perry; his parents, George and
Lilla Kate Hart of Valdosta, Ga.;

Two services honor Demps Sunday
Chester H. Demps, senior pastor of Christian Tabernacle, will be

Commission backs ballot item with vote, not money

the ballot after it was voted down
in 2006.
Commissioner Rudolph Parker
suggested changing the language
of the referendum.
Breer, however, said TCDA did


not feel the problem was in the
language but its attempts at voter
education before the election.
"In hind sight, the TCDA feels it
did a poor job of educating voters
about why it was beneficial," he
said, adding that they plan to issue
a countywide mailout explaining
the ballot item.
"We have no problem with the
wording," he said.
The language on the ballot for
the referendum states, "Shall the
Board of County Commissioners
of Taylor County be authorized to
grant, pursuant to Section 3,
Article VII of the State
Constitution, Property Tax
Exemptions to new businesses and
expansions of existing


businesses?"
Commissioner Mark Wiggins
made a motion to approve placing
the item on the ballot; Parker
seconded. The measure passed
unanimously.
Discussions then turned to the
request for '$2,500, with
commissioners spilt on the issue.
"I think we made a pretty good
donation to the Development


Authority during the budget
session," Parker said.
"To me it sends the wrong
message not to give them the
$2,500," Bethea said.
Parker made a motion to deny
the request with Patterson
seconding. Parker, Patterson and
Page voted to deny the request,
with Bethea and Wiggins voting
against.


When asked Tuesday, Breer said,
"It is an important fact that
approving this, referendum does
not approve any tax exemptions for
businesses.
"Each case that is brought;
either by the Development
Authority or any business, would
require individual ordinances,
which would include public
hearings."

will present the forum at

Dan McDonald, FWC lead
biologist for the Big Bend region,
will give a presentation on deer
management in Florida.
In addition, the forum will'
include an explanation by FWC Lt.
Bruce Cooper on new hunting laws
and "hot topics" for the 2007-08
hunting season.
A question and answer session
on law enforcement-related issues
will follow Cooper's talk.
"Taylor County is unique among
counties in Florida in having seven
wildlife management areas and
more than 35 hunt clubs," Cooper
said.
"Three-quarters of Taylor
County's coastline is designated as
a wildlife management area. We in
Taylor County are extremely
fortunate to have these tremendous
resources available to us.
"As such, it is very important for


the community and the FWC to
work closely in protecting our


valuable natural resource for future
generations," Cooper said.

Autobots, Decepticons ready


for war in 'Transformers' DVD


There was plenty of trepidation among fans leading
up the July 2 release of Michael Bay's live-action
"Transformers."
For the past 20 years, since the Japanese toyline and
cartoon series first hit the U.S., "Transformers" has
quietly built a fan-following just as loyal and
cantankerous as any Trekkie or "Star Wars" buff.
While the big-budget, high-octane production didn't
please all fans, no one can deny it was hit, taking in $316
million at the domestic box office, the Third highest
grossing film of 2007 behind "Spider Man 3" and "Shrek
the Third." Add foreign box office totals, and
"Transformers" brought in $699 million.
DreamWorks has already set a release date for the
eventual sequel; it's June 26, 2009, for those who want
to mark their calendars.
While fans--and non-fans for that matter--have some
legitimate gripes about the film, I think the end result
delivered exactly what it promised, giant robots duking
it out while everybody else tries their best to stay out of
the way.
As .the film opens, we get a quick history of the planet
Cybertron, destroyed in a war between the Autobots and
Decepticons. Both sides are trying to find the All Spark.
Their search leads them to our planet and humanity is
about to find itself stuck in the middle of a war.
Surprisingly, the human stories held up pretty well
through the almost tw6-and-one-half hour film.
Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is a boy about to get
his first car in an effort to impress classmate Mikaela
Banes (Megan Fox). Unfortunately for him, his new car
turns out to be Bumblebee, an advance scout for the

humans, we get precious little time to interact with our
title characters. The voice acting was good, giving the
Autobots at least a chance to differentiate one another.
Peter Cullen returns from the original cartoon to voice
Optimus Prime, the big-rig leader of the Autobots.
On the Decepticon side, aside from a fewv subtitled
electronic warbles, you never really learn much about
them. They end up becoming simply the scorpion robot,
the helicopter robot and the fighter jet robot, etc. That's
a shame.
One of the joys of watching the original show was
knowing everyone, the good guys and bad as well as
their personalities, not to mention their names. With the
new film, it is hard to get emotionally involved with
them, aside from Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.
I can understand that finances and practicality limited
the amount of time the robots could be on screen. While
it may. only cost several thousand dollars to film two
actors conversing, that same scene with 30-foot-tall CG
robots may run into the hundreds of thousands.
Hopefully the sequel(s) will give us more time to get
to know our robotic friends (and enemies). To me,
storytelling works when you have characters you care
about.
That's why franchises like "Pirates of the Caribbean"
and "Harry Potter" work so well. You forge a connection
between yourself and the characters and have an
investment in their success or defeat.
While there is room for improvement, "Transformers"
provides just about everything you can ask for from a
big-name action blockbuster while pleasing fans .(well,
most of them) along the way-

Tallahassee promises to be "new
and spectacular" as the Tallahassee
Symphony Orchestra and the
Friends of Maclay Gardens
celebrate their 10-year anniversary
on Sunday, Oct. 21.
For the first time, Miriam Bums,
music director and conductor, will
lead the orchestra in a program of
popular classical music at the
Pops. She became conductor of the
Tallahassee Symphony last year
and is "eager to lead the orchestra
in this annual outdoor community
event."
"We are so happy to have the
Tallahassee Symphony back for
our special event," Chairman Lou
Kellenberger said. "The concert
theme is 'Celebrations!' which is in
honor of this being the 10th
anniversary of Pops in the
Gardens."
Burns is also one of the
conductors on staff of the New
York Philharmonic, having been
appointed by Kurt Masur in 1999.
She is the music director/
conductor of the Kenosha
Symphony, the Orhestra of the
Redeemer in New /York City and
formerly music director of the
Lawton Philharmonic and the C.W.
Post Summer Music Festival.

Perry teenager Marybeth Clark has been cast in one
of the supporting roles in an upcoming television shoi
called "SunSet Valley."
Clark will be working alongside the rest of the
"SunSet Valley" girls--Lizzie Star (Lauren), Brancfi
Lynn (Stacey), Kaley Briann (Cassidy), Casey Marie.
(Kenzie) and Bre Morgan (Claire).
Clark will play the role of Dakota, a teenage higu
school farm girl who recently moved from Austirn
Texas, to SunSet Valley. She lives on a ranch jus
outside of SunSet Valley. -
