Legislature discusses budget, property taxes
Local boards eyeing Tallahassee
Local governments and
organizations are keeping watch on
Tallahassee as the Florida
Legislature continues its special
session with topics including
budget' cuts, no-fault auto
insurance and a possible revival of
a January referendum concerning
property taxes.
The 10-day session began
Wednesday, as legislators
attempted to overcome a budget
deficit, with cuts expected in social
services and education.
Taylor County School District
Board Chairwoman Brenda
Carlton told her fellow board
members Tuesday that the latest
news from Tallahassee predicted a
slightly smaller cut than they had
previously expected.
Nothing was certain, however,
until the session was complete, she
warned.
The Florida Department of
Education sent notices to school
districts across the state earlier this
year with calls to cut four percent
from the state revenue levels for
the 2007-08 fiscal year as
estimated during the legislature's
session in March.
In Taylor County, that amounted
to approximately $600,000 in lost
revenue.
Legislators are also expected to
try to revive the state's personal
injury protection insurance, which
expired Oct. 1.
Gov. Charlie Crist has called for
the legislature to try to find a way
to return a property tax reform
referendum back to the Jan. 29,
2008, presidential primary ballot.
Late last month Second Judicial
Circuit Chief Judge Charles A.
Frances removed the referendum
from the ballot, calling it
"misleading and inaccurate."
The Florida Legislature, during a
special session this past summer,

Ten spoons left for 'babies'
Eleven spoons, marking the births of local residents in the, 1960s, were
discovered when Lockhart Drug Company's inventory was reviewed prior
to the sale of the building:
Little is known about the glistening spoons (by William'Rogers), but
they.are thought to be silverplated gifts for new babies in the community.
Each is engraved with a first name and a date ofbirth, featuring a tiny
etching of clock's face in which the hands, are correctly placed. The top of
each spoon reads, "Birth Record Of..." and the engraving tapers down.to
depict a stork.
"We would just love for these spoons to go to the families, they were
made for," said Jogie Brown Lockhart who passed along the keepsakes. ,
Marti (Freeman) Alvarez recently collected her spoon. Ten are left:

Trout, reds picking up
-BY PAT MCGRIFF
: One More Cast Guide Service
Trout and reds have really picked
.up as the water temps have come
down a few degrees since early
September.
Trout are taking Berkley Gulp,
Assassin Blurp and live Pinfish
under Cajun Thunders in 3 5 feet
of water.
I eds are slamming Precision
(Tackle's Thunder-Spin
Spinnerbaits with New Penny,
Space Guppy and Electric Chicken
patterns.
The following folks had success
over the last week to ten days:
., Dan Tucker and Christen Sharp
of Adel, Ga., had 8 trout and'a few
black sea bass using Berkley Gulp
in 5 feet of water Sunday.
Wednesday, I took Dave Miller
and his daughter Joleena and son-
in-law Mike, out and we brought
in 15 trout and a nice two pound
flounder, all .of which ate live
pinfish under Cajun Thunders.
David Davis, Donnie, Terry and
SNash Phillips of Wildwood, Ga.,
fished from September 23 -27th to
' land 100 trout, and nine reds
fishing with Pearl white gulp
under Cajun Thunders in 3 5 feet'
of water.
Frank and Kathy Morello of
Crawfordville had their limit of
trout to 23 inches long and their
limit of reds to 26.5-inches long
for 'two days, Tuesday and
Wednesday using live pinfish and
cut bait under Cajuns in 3 5 feet
of water.
Al and Theresa Allen of Lee
fished 3 5 feet of water for seven
trout and two Spanish using live
pinfish under Cajun Thunders.
Greg and Cindy Collins of
Keaton Beach had a 26 inch red
and a limit ,of trout on natural
shrimp Gulp, Thursday, from 3.5
feet of water.
Andy Flack and John Howe of
Keaton Beach had nine trout and
one 25 inch red from 3.5 feet of
water Saturday.
Cal Beanblossom and Glenn
Floyd, of Slyvester, Ga., had their
hard fought limit of ten' trout
Saturday, fishing live pinfish
under Cajuns, and one trout on
MirrOlure's New MirrOlip plug.
Janice Sherman and Lewis and
Herbert Aldridge and Don
Simmons with Ashley .Mock of
Perry used Berkley Gulp under

The two issues which seem to

250 students in attendance for our
first meeting Wednesday, Aug. 29,

Students in attendance).
: Because of gym renovations,

Students were encouraged as the

:! Our goal is to have at least half
Of our campus involved in

by the end of the school year. Each
ind every one of students on
campus are priceless treasures
that have been endowed to us by
God.
- Countless people have sought
throughout the ages to satisfy their
lives with possessions, or wealth,
pr alcohol, or drugs, or status, etc.,
nbut the truth is, there is only one
vho can fully and completely
satisfy the longing of our
ie~arts, and that is a true and
right relationship with Jesus
Christ.
Mr. Paul Dyal and the TCMS
staff have been very supportive of
this organization. It makes an
impact on our campus and
community. I have had numerous
people throughout our county, as
well as our state, ask about the
FCA programs at Taylor County
Middle School and Taylor County
High School, because they see
firsthand the difference God is
making in the lives of the students
that attend.
To God and God alone be all the
glory and honor!

appreciate all that they do to make
FCA happen at our school.
Lastly, but certainly not least, a
list of those that have supported

If you can find the time
Movies of all shapes and
sizes on the menu in Oct.
October is a busy month for Taylor County, with the
Pickin' in the Pines Festival this weekend joining forces
with the March of Dimes WalkAmerica campaign .(not
to mention the Florida Forest Festival Jr. Miss program
Saturday night), the Little King and Queen Pagaent next
weekend, the Kids Parade the Saturday following and,
of course, the Florida Forest' Festival big day on
Saturday, Oct. 27.
Hollywood, however, isn't slowing down, and is
tossing a veritable smorgasbord of titles spanning just
abo0t every genre Imaginable. Usually .,
I ecn find a pattern or two in the '
releases to figure out what the studios
are thinking, but I'm at a loss to explain
the sheer range of films being released
in October. All we can do it sift through
it all and try to find a few diamonds.
The buffet begins today with the
:wide release of four films, along with
the expansion of another. Up first is
"The Seeker: The Dark is Rising."
-based on a series of children's books -
*written by Susan Cooper in the 1960' .,S. -,
and 70s. I remember reading the books
when I was younger, but I couldn't tell ..
:you much about them now. From what
-I've heard, however, it wouldn't make
-much difference, since the mov ie
-version is apparently much changed
from the books, to the point most of the
cast has admitted to not reading them.
"The Dark is Rising," also the name of
--the series as a whole, is actually the
second book in the sequence. In it (the
.,mgvie version). Will Stanton learns 9
:'that he is the last of a group of
immortal warriors fighting against the
force of the dark.
Up next is "The Heartbreak Kid,"
starring Ben Stiller in the remake of the
1972 Neil Simon-penned movie of the
same name. Stiller is celebrating his .
honeymoon with the woman of his ., ..
dreams, but a. sudden change in her ''
personality, coupled with his finding .
another woman of his dreams, makes
him realize he made a mistake. In case
you wanted to see it again, Stiller
appears to be playing the same role he
has .played in just about every movie
he's been in. Go team.
In "Feel the Noise," Omarion
Grandberry, is an aspiring rapper who
flees to Puerto Rico after a run-in with
a group of thugs. While there, he meets
his father, a man he has never known,
and is introduced to Reggaetown, a
musical blend of hip-hop, reggae and
Latin beats.
Expanding to more than 800 theatres
across the country is "The Jane
Austen Book Club," a romantic
comedy/drama about six Californians
who -decide to start a book club
honoring their favorite author, Jane
Austen. Based on the book by Karen
Joy Fowler, the movie follows the six
friends as they discover their love lives
often resemble the stories of their
favorite author. Screenwriter Robin
Swicord ("Memoirs of a Geisha,"
"Little Women") penned the script and
directed this time around.
Next weekend, four more movies will be released,
including the lavish sequel, "Elizabeth: The Golden
Age," starring Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I of.
England. Following 1998's "Elizabeth," which received
seven Academy Award nominations, including Best
Picture and Best Actress for Blanchett, "The Golden
Age" tells of the later years of Queen Elizabeth's reign
as she faces conspiracies and a budding romance with
Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen). Hollywood loves
sequels, but who would have guessed this one? I haven't
seen the first film, but the trailers out now make me want
to go back and catch it.
Also opening next Friday is the latest film from Tyler
Perry, "Why Did I Get Married?" Perry's films have
been hit or miss lately, but he works on such small
budgets that his movies -tend to make their money back,
thus he keeps getting the green light for more. "Why Did
I Get Married," like many of his films, is based on one
of his stage plays, and is about the trials of marriage,
following four couples coping with the fallout of an
adulterous incident. Fans of Perry's Madea series will
get their next fix in 2008, with "Meet the Browns."
In "The Final Season," Sean Austin (Sam in "the
Lord of the Rings" films) plays Kent Stock, who must
coach his high school baseball team, set up to lose, to the
state championship. This one looks compelling, if only
because it is about baseball rather than the usual
football. The problem with sports movies is that there
have been so many of them that even when we get a
story such as this, even the fact that it's based on actual
events can't help it from sounding cliche. For baseball
fans, especially high school baseball fans, it could be a
surprise home run.
Finishing the weekend is "We Own the Night,"
starring Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg as two
brothers on the opposite side of the law, one a cop and
the other a mob-connected club owner. That this movie
has been receiving comparisons to "The Departed," last
year's, award-winning mob movie, should not come as a
surprise. Whether it will live up to the comparison,
however, is yet to be seen. This is director/screenwriter
James Gray's first film since his 2000 "The Yards,"
which also starred Phoenix and
Wahlberg.
On Oct. 19, a mind-blowing seven
movies are opening in wide release.
Seven! We will begin, in no
particular order, with, "30 Days of
Night," starring Josh Hartnett and
Melissa George, about a small town
.*,- in Alaska that is 'attacked by
vampires just as the sun sets for 30
-- -, days. Based on the graphic novel by
-. Steve Nile, and directed by David
Slade ("Hard Candy"), this film in
S Pflicks released this year.
"Rendition," director Gavin
Hood's follow-up to his Academy
Award-winning film "Tsotsi,"
follows the story of a suspected
S terrorist (Omar Metwalley) who
disappears while on a flight to
Washington. His wife (Reese
Witherspoon) tries to learn of his
fate, while a CIA analyst (Jake
Gyllenhaal) attempts to inJerreogate
him in a secret prison. '
In "Things We Lost in the Fire,"
Halle Berry play a woman, recently
widowed, who invites her husband's
troubled friend (Benicio Del Toro) to
Live with her and her two children.
As the family struggles to overcome
their loss, he struggles to overcome
S his own demons. There is some early
Oscar buzz for both leads with this
rrm" 7 one.
"Gone Baby Gone," starring
Morgan Freeman, Casey Affleck,
Michelle Monaghan and more, is
actor Ben Affleck's first shot at the
director's chair since his only other
attempt in 1993. In the movie, which
has one of the worst titles of the year
in my opinion, two Boston cops
search for a misHing four-year-old
girl.
"The Comebacks," from director
Tom Brady (not the football player),
is a spoof' on inspirational sports
movies. A down-on-his-luck coach
tries to bring a losing team back to
the championship, lampooning every
cliche in the process. Spoofs are hard
to judge these days, ranging from
bad ("Not Another Teen Movie") to
really bad ("Date Movie"), so you'll
have to see this one at your own risk.
In "Sarah, Landon and the
Paranormal Hour," a teenage girl
returns home and confronts a local
mystery that is connected to the
paranormal. Vague, I know, but I
can't really get a fix on this one, even after watcfiing the
trailer. It's rated PG, so it should be fine for the younger
teenage audience struggling for something to watch this
month, especially girls. The movie's Web site boasts that
this is the first in a series of Sarah Landon mysteries, so
franchise plans are already in the works.
This busy weekend finishes up with a re-release of a
re-release in "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before
Christmas in Disney Digital 3-D" which first hit
theatres in 1993 and returned last year in the enhanced,
3.-D version. Tim Burton's classic tale of Jack
Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, and
his sudden obsession with Christmas, seems to be set for
an annual re-release around Halloween.
Speaking of annual releases, the Oct. 26 weekend
brings us our annual dose of what amounts to violence
pornography in "Saw IV." In the movie's trailer, they
say, "If it's Halloween, then it's Saw." Wow, to think the
date already had a bad reputation. If you liked the
previous movies about Jigsaw and his torturous
endeavors, I'm sure you'll like this one too. What else is
there to say?
Finishing off the month is Steve Carrell's attempt to
get people to forget his bomb, "Evan Almighty," with his
latest film, "Dan in Real Life." Also starring Juliette
Binoche and Dane Cook, the movie follows a man who
falls for his brother's girlfriend. Director/screenwriter
Peter Hedges brings his credentials from his 2003 film,
"Pieces of April," which earned Patricia Clarkson a Best
Supporting Actress nomination.
With the wide range of films opening in October,
there's sure to be one or two that may strike your fancy.
If you can find the time, enjoy!

Local residents urged to register
with emergency contact system
One year ago this week, the
Florida Department of Highway
Safety and Motor Vehicles
(DHSMV) implemented a new
emergency contact information
system that allows Florida
motorists to voluntarily provide
emergency contact information on-
line using their Florida driver
licenses or identification cards.
The information can then be
accessed by law enforcement
officers to notify designated
contacts if a motorist is seriously
injured or killed in a traffic crash.
Local residents are encouraged
to take advantage of the program
and register their emergency
contact information.
Legislation for the new system
stems from a tragedy involving the
family of Tiffany Olson.
After her daughter Tiffany was
critically injured in a traffic crash
in 2005, Christine Olson was not
immediately notified of the
incident because law enforcement
officers working the crash had no
emergency contact information.
Olson felt that some kind of
system needed to be in place that
would ensure the immediate
contact of parents and loved ones
in cases like this, so she asked for
help from her state legislator,
Representative Bill Galvano,
who put her in contact with
DHSMV.
"We encourage all Floridians to
take a few moments and input this
vital information," said Electra
Bustle, executive director of
DHSMV. "In the event of an
unfortunate emergency, having this
information readily at hand will
allow law enforcement officials to
quickly get in touch with those
listed as a contact.
"On this first year anniversary,
we are, once again, urging
motorists to go on-line and
enter their emergency contact
information. To date, more than
743,000 Floridians have already
done so. However, with some 18,
million licensed drivers and
identification card holders in our
state, many more need to take the
time to go on-line and enter their
information."
Anyone with a valid Florida
driver license or identification card
can go on-line and enter their
emergency contact information at
www.hsmv.state.fl.us.
The information is kept secure,
and is only used by law
enforcement officials in case of an
emergency.
He's a winner!

2-1-1 directory of services
available to residents soon
A new resource will soon be
'-available for residents of Taylor
SCounty when 2-1-1 Big Bend (a
-United Way agency) publishes its
00.2O07-08 Community Resource
'Directory.
The directory is considered a
,xonmprejiensive, guide to human
services in the eight-county Big
Bend area, featuring an
alphabetical index of agencies and
programs, with a service keyword
index for the type of service
offered," explained Isabel Rush, a
resource specialist working with 2-
1-1.
She also reports that Taylor
Countians have been calling the
three-digit 2-1-1 number in
increased numbers, especially now
that the number can be accessed by
cell phones.
2-1-1 Big Bend provides 24-
hour, seven-day-a-week hotline
services with trained counselors
available to make referrals or to
offer crisis intervention. "All
Helpline 2-1-1 calls are
confidential and callers can choose
to remain anonymous," she said.
Funds are currently being raised
for a "Bulldog Wall of Fame"
backstop which will be constructed
for Pace Field before the opening
of the 2008 baseball season.
For this project, one-of-a-kind
signature bricks will' be laser
engraved with a name and
message.
"You can honor a present athlete
or a past alumnus," said Bruce
Ratliff, president of the Taylor
County Bulldog Baseball
Boosters.
The cost is $25 per brick with
inscriptions limited to two lines of
18 characters each (including
commas, periods, spaces). You
may purchase an additional line for
$10 more per brick. Suggestions
include: athlete's name (first line)
and graduating class (second line);
a favorite coach (first line) and his
tenure (second line); supporters
who have been faithful to follow
Taylor County sports, etc.
A Nov. 1 deadline has been
established so that the backstop
will be ready for the upcoming
season. To order bricks, please
send your name, address and phone
number along with the inscriptions
you desire, printed clearly.
Payments may be mailed to Taylor
County Bulldog Baseball at P.O.
Box 1351, Perry, FL 323348.
"As always, we appreciate your
support of all sports in this
community, and look forward to
constructing this 'Wall of Fame' as
a tribute to the many fine athletes
who have played and coached at
Pace Field."
