Massive search launched

Georgia boaters missing in Gulf

Dozens of local officers with the
Florida Fish & Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC)
and the Taylor County Sheriffs
Office (TCSO), along with
members of the U.S. Coast Guard,
are searching in the vicinity of the
Steinhatchee River for two missing
boaters in a 19-foot boat.
"We received a call from the
Coast Guard around 3:30 a.m. this
morning (Thursday) requesting
assistance in the search for two

City holds

final hearing

on budget

Tuesday

City residents have one more
opportunity to voice their opinions
on the coming, year's municipal
budget during a final public
hearing Tuesday night at, City
Hall.
The city council is expected to
formally adopt the proposed 2007-
08 budget hnd proposed millage
rate during the hearing, which
begins at 6:30 p.m.-
City" residents will see an
estimated 12 percent reduction in
property taxes, with the millage
rate dropping from 4.6675 to
4.1231 once the plan is approved.-
At last week's city meeting,
Mayor Emily Ketring summarized
the actions taken by the council for'
the coming budget year:
"For public clarity, I wanted to
reiterate what proposals have not
been adopted by the city. council:
garbage pick-up will remain two.
times per week; all street lights
will remain on; sewer rates will
remain the same; crossing guards
will remain, city employees; and
the city will continue selling
natural gas at the discounted rate.
Highlighting the changes
planned for next year, Ketring
said, "We will start charging for
false alarms from alarm systems.
The high volume of calls our
police officers respond to takes
valuable time away from other
necessary duties. This is a service
fee."
She continued, "We will be

out since about 4:30 a.m. looking
for the men," FWC Public
Information Coordinator Karen
Parker said.
The search and rescue teams
were facing eight-foot seas and
winds up to 25 knots.
"The weather is so bad right now
in the Gulf that it is hindering our
efforts, but we are all still out there
searching," Parker said.
According to family members,
Chris Burkhalter, 37, and his uncle,
John Burkhalter, 54, both residents

of Macon, Ga., brought the boat, a
1985 Chaparral christened "Blue
Angel," to Riverhaven Marina in
Steinhatchee, to do some, fishing
and work on their grandmother's
house, located next to the marina.
The Coast Guard received a call
from Chris's wife about 12 a.m.
(Thursday), reporting that the two
men headed to the marina Tuesday
morning, Sept. 18, and she had not
spoken to her husband since.
The Coast Guard received
confirmation at 8:10 a.m.,

Thursday, Sept. 20, from a worker
at the marina that both men arrived
at the marina about 3 p.m.,
Tuesday. The two left gear, food
and their cell phones at the house
and took- the boat for a test drive
about 3:30 p.m., Tuesday.
"The men bought three-day
fishing, licenses at the marina, put
in and nobody has heard from them
since," Parker said. "We have
confirmed that the boat was
launched Tuesday. We contacted'
Chris' wife this afternoon and she

still hasn't heard from either of the
men."
Further investigation found that
the vessel the two men were using
had a history of engine problems.

fines

for false

alarms?

Do yodu have an alarm system
installed in a home or "business
inside the city limits of Perry?
-:If ihe ciiy council passes a
proposed ordinance, you will have
to register your system with the
city or face hefty fines for any
0 false alarms.
According to City Manager Bob
Brown, the intent of the ordinance
"is not to generate revenue, but to-
have people make sure that their
- alarm systems work properly.
"Last year, city police
responded to more than 600 false
alarms," he said.
Brown and City Attorney Mike
Smith presented the commission,
with the proposed ordinance for its ..
first reading during its meeting:,
Thursday, Sept. 13.
According to Smith, he based,
the ordinance on one in
Gainesville, which in turn was
based on one from Sarasota passed
in 1983.
As first presented to the council;.:
the ordinance would have
mandated an annual $45 fee for-
residents and business owners to
register their alarm systems.
If an unregistered system
resulted in a false alarm, the
property owner would be subject
to a $250 fine per. false alarm.
For those registered, however,

The currents have changed once
again for the ducks and their
downtown pond.
While the City of Perry and
American Legion members
reached a tentative agreement
earlier this month regarding the
upkeep the duck pond, City
Manager Bob Brown told council
members last Thursday that the
Legion had changed its mind and
now wants to give the property to
the city.
The city--which had maintained
the pond grounds for decades--
recently stopped its clean-up after
learning that the land actually
belonged to the American Legion.

"State statute's prevent (the city)
from doing any sort of
maintenance on private property,"
Brown said.
Legion members were also
surprised to learn that they owned
the property.
According to the deal, the city
would renew its maintenance of
the grounds in exchange for the
Legion allowing the city to use the
pond for a holding site for its storm
water.
Such a deal is allowed by state
statutes, Brown said.
With Brown present, however,
the Legion's membership voted
down the agreement and instead

asked that the city take over the
property.
Brown told the council on
Thursday, Sept. 13, that he had'
checked with Suwannee River
Water Management District to see
if they would want the property.
"They don't want it," he said.
Councilman Don Cook made a
motion to accept the property;
Councilman Doug Everett
seconded and the measure passed
unanimously.
The issue still has to return to the
Legion for a final vote, and the

Have you ever wondered why smells are so closely -
connected to memories? It' appears the area squarely~ 3
located in the center of our face is hardwired directly m:t.)
our brain. ,Weu'at least, it appears to be so with rly--"
makeup, Good smells, bad smells, pungent smells arid'-'
sweet smells seem to occupy a place in my memory.
And the interesting fact is that at any moment in time'
those smells can be triggered and bingo, I have'
memory that is as fresh as the day it was created.
Baked biscuit, hot out of the oven, brings memories dof"
meals shared at the Leggett table. On the other hand,.:L
the smell of cornbread and lima beans always lands nme, i
at the house of,a childhood friend, Zara Mae. She lived
with her Grandma Sauls in a small wooden house near,
the Center Street Church of God. I had the pleasure f
eating with' them many times during my growing vp.
days. Most of those times Grandma Sauls served the"i
same fare, lima beans' abd cornbread. I loved it. Shfe.'
served the beans and bread hot from the wood stove
that took up most of the space in her little kitchen. We-,
held our hands out eagerly to take the steaming bowl oflf
beans and huge chunk of cornibread. The bread was
always broken, never cuf. I. immediately crumbled the--,
bread on top of the beans but Zara Mae used a differeg-.J
technique. She would' drown a heaping spoonful of,
mayonnaise in the beans, swirling it until it dissoIlv d
completely in the bean juice. With our meal ready fori
consumption, we folded, our hands and bowed o ii
heads for Grandma Stuls' blessing.
My daddy always carried the smell of the woods. It iA.
one of my favorite smells. Warm air, rain-brushed treess)
and the sharp smell of sawdust surrounded him as -,
threw me atop his shoulders for a ride. The smell was,-"
intensified when he set up the sawmill in .the field just zd
beyond our house. As.the saw cut the logs the odor of :;i
fresh pine resin would rise in the air. The smell driftedi,.;
on wind currents dipping down near my playhouse;.:I
lifted my face toward the spell as it engulfed me muelx:'
like a hug from Daddy's strong arms.; Mainai ikeaf
Daddy, was an outdoor person but her smell was one of; -
newly-turned soil and blooming flowers. Her yard was"'"
her castle. She didn't neglect housework, but her trtle,
calling was the care of the numerous flower gardeig i
that abounded on every available spot of ground. Mamfan'
loved the feel of dirt on her hands as she turned the soil
for seed. I mPade each step she did; with the hole's '
prepared, she dropped the seed and I used my bare fe6ft'n:
to cover the holes,.
Recognizing her green-thumb as a money-makinig,
tool, Maima. decided to plant a crop of gladioli. A":
quarter-acre space was tilled and Mama went about the'
time-consuming chore of planting the bulbs. The weeks'.
following were filled with fertilizing, watering and:"'
weeding, Oh, but the pay off was well worth the work
and the waiting. Mama produced the most gorgeous
field of flowers that had folks stopping their cars in th'
middle of'the five-points intersection to gaze at th6e,
serene beauty. The rmanbow of, color was a sight to
behold. Mama's business :took off as she delivered
flowers for weddings and funerals. Smaller blooms were:..,
not discarded, but used to make corsages, a staple f..i,
every well-dressed lady of the fifties.
Of course, 0th r sn ails lived among us as well. Hopie.,
our huge red' og. Ibad her; own distinct smell. Our dog;-
Fuzzie, was a mixture of smells depending on where.,2
and what he encountered during the day. The prickly .;
lemon tree in the backyard, the blooms of the mimosa; s
tree, the smokehouse, the chicken pen and the day's
laundry hanging on the clothesline combined to flood ,,
my system with smells of home. : ,:
Then there are the smells of holidays: the piney smell;
of Christmas mingled with roasted turkey, the vinegqar,o.
smell of Easter eggs. And most of all the special smell pof, -
your birthday cake topped by dripping wax candles.'oi
demanding to be blown out, : ,
Once in a while an unwelcome smell came for a visit-;!I
Like the time a large Taylor County rat moved in during
a cold winter. Things were fine until he croaked on the ''-
rat poison Mama had deposited near his hiding place::',o
That's when things took a turn downhill. Mama's plaxra;:
was for the rat to come out in search of water to wash,-;'
the poison down. Needless to say, the rat took a wrong
turn and ended up "feet first'" behind the wall. Since
tearing the wall down wasn't an option, we coped with-r
the smell day after' dy, Meals were horrible as we tried
to swallow food with the smell of dead rat in our noses.
Nights were even worse as sleep refused to come so we )
could block out the smell that seemed to grow more,
pronounced each daiy. Mama washed and rewashed o4 '
school clothes. Logcally, she knew the smell wasn't i
the clothes but the odor in bthe air confused her logic :
Finally,.,the air was cleansed and with time the ra"
saga faded. But,, I assure. you, Mama stayed on tiI
lookout for another trespasser. Should one be spott.i '
he was' cornered at the door and firmly disposed <' .
Some 50 years later, I, had a relative of the offend^;:
show up at my home. As the smell began to identify tli ,
culprit a sickening feeling overtook me as the memory /'
of the childhood ordeal surfaced. I know I am now.:
grown woman but mty .ose refused to notify my brain (g'
the change in years ?
"Yuck, yuck," I complained day after day as I sprayed "
and washed everything in sight. Some things just nevt.: .'
change thanks to memories. "

became whether the free false
alarms would result. from year to
year.
The compromise was the first
two false alarms per year (for a
registered system), would be free,
followed by three for $100 and
subsequent false alarms for $250
each:
Residents and business owners
will still be required to renew their
registration annually, but will only
be charged the $45 fee the first
time.
Those who install a new alarm
system, per the ordinance, would
be -granted a six-month grace
period.
The ordinance would also
prohibit any alarm system that,
when triggered, directly calls 911.
Most systems call inonitoring
companies who in .turn call
emergency services, and Brown
told the council that he. was not
aware of any system' in the city
limits that directly calls 911.
The council would have held a
public hearing on the proposed
ordinance at the board meeting
next .week, but due to the changes,
the :city will instead re-advertise
the, ordinance for a future date.

EMPLOYMENT CONNECTIONS

Beginning Oct. 1, the mobile
unit will be in Perry every
Wednesday, from 9 a.m. until 6:30
p.m. at the Kmart parking lot. The
unit will visit Live Oak every
Tuesday at the Lowes parking lot.
Branch said they are currently
'finalizing locations for Hamilton,
Jefferson and Lafayette counties;
the unit will rotate between those
locations on Thursdays.
Executive Director Sheryl
Rehberg said this summer that the
change in delivery of employment
services was a result of the changes
in funding allocations for the
current fiscal year.
"The decision to consolidate
locations was difficult, and

She said that over the past three
to four years, NFWDB has lost 75
percent of its state funding. Since
then, the board has been looking at
various strategies to continue
services with the remaining
funding streams.
Under agreement with a county
commission consortium of the six
counties, the NFWDB is
responsible for implementing a
plan to serve businesses and
individuals with assistance for
locating employees or jobs. In

charging an underground utility
line location fee. More than two-
and-a-half man years were used
last year for line locations. Some
90 percent of the calls were from
two utility companies. This is a
service fee.
"Regular service calls fees will
be $50. Previously, it was below
cost. This is a service fee.
"The city pool will not open next
summer. Every year the number of
swimmers using the pools has
gone down. It now costs city

taxpayers roughly $56 per swim,"
Ketring said.
"If you do not use one of these
services, you do not pay. Currently,
all. city taxpayers subsidize these
services.
"Also currently, the City of
Perry's rate of spending is below
inflation. This was achieved in
spite of price increases in gas,
insurance and raw materials.
"Every water customer in the
city will enjoy a modest decrease
on their monthly bill. This is the
lowest rate since 1996.
"The* city council decreased
property taxes by approximately

12 percent. Our millage rate is the
lowest since 1989. An estimated 86
percent of cities in the state of
Florida have a higher millage rate
then the City of Perry."
Ketring concluded by stating,
"Perry City Council members are
the lowest paid elected officials.
We proudly serve our city for a
fraction of what our counterparts
receive.
"This year we are going to
replace a 21-year-old firetruck.
This effort is an example that the
city council will continue our
commitment to the safety of our
citizens."

Richard Zeigler, bearing boxes of Galax leaves and
orchid blooms, too, was welcomed to the first Perry
Garden Club meeting of the 2007-2008 year, as
members dutifully followed his instructions and
enjoyed his stories.
Zeigler demonstrated the process of making full,
layered "flowers" from shiny Galax leaves while his
all-female audience listened attentively and followed
instructions dutifully. There is rarely a consensus
among such a large group of women (for there were
more than 50), but on this occasion, all agreed: "It's
not as easy as it looks..."
It looked easy to Zeigler, and he said it was, but with
53 years in the florist business, his skills are nicely
honed. Never you mind, the women enjoyed
themselves immensely and made a good audience for
Zeigler's repertoire of "florist stories"--those odd.
occurrences which make a small business owner
conclude, "This is a crazy world."

Elvis: a civil rights activist?
Z- Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Miss., on Jan 8. 1935. Tupelo has its
If-vis Presley street, the Elvis Presley chapel, the Elvis Presley Museum,
4i:El' is Presley bronze statue and even a lake after the king's name. The
Ovis Presley homestead is there for all to cherish. There, you will find
d ie.porabilia from the king's' family and school friends. The museum also
I6ds many other artifacts donated by various people throughout the years.
'"f. park surrounding the museum and homestead is well manicured and
.3avonte spot for picnickers and bird watchers alike.
Does a city like Tupelq realize its part in being the birthplace of Elvis
Prrsley? In this case,..Elvis was not only an artist who made a lot of money,
1e redefined music as we know it. He took rock-a-billy and mixed it with
6fies and gospel music to come out with what we call rock and roll. More
importantly, he bro6e the color barrier in music whereas many artists
before him made their fame and fortune by re-issuing songs being sung by
black artists to the white population.
Elvis imitated his life from the streets qf Tupelo, in that he played with
kids regardless of color. As. an adult, he'then listened and played music
froni all rages, to all races. Elvis-Presley belongs with the likes of Martin
L er King and Rita Park when it comes to advancement of the colored
to.ple in America. He did more to recognize the equality of all human
beings than many other heroes we follow.
Does Tupelo, Miss., and in fact, the world, realize the importance of
Elvis Presley as a human rights activist? There should be a street named
after him in every major city in America. Unfortunately, time will only
rmnbmber'him as a great singer.

Trout were cooperative for most
folks, even in the 20 knot w-i-n-d-
s we've been seeing lately.
Here are a few who caught fish:
Jeff Key and Alan Hattaway of
Macon, Ga., fished Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, and brought
in 20 trout on Berkley Gulp, New
Penny under Cajun Thunders.
Peul and Janet Caster of
Valdosta, Ga., had 10 trout with
one fish 21.5 inches long Saturday
using Gtlp Pearl White bouncing
the bottom in 8 10 feet of water.
Bob and Little Bob Fowler of
Albany, Ga., had 8 trout and two
- redfish .(22-inches and 23-inches)
:.from six feet of water using
.Berkley Gulp in Pearl White, New
: Penny and Lime Tiger.
Brad and Judy Denman of
Thomasville, Ga., caught 8 trout
16 inches to 20 inches and 2 reds,
18 inches and 22 inches Thursday.
Then on Friday, they had 10 trout
16 inches to 20 inches and 2 reds

on pinfish under Cajun Thunders,
plugs or Berkley. Gulps under
Cajun Thunder 4-inch shrimp
(Sugar Spice Glow) and 5 1/2-inch
jerk shad (Pink Shine).
They were fishing in, 2.5 to 4
feet of water and caught most of
our fish 2 hours prior to high tide.
In fact, on Friday they didn't go
out until after lunch and were back
in iat 3:30 with a limit' of trout and
reds.
Monday, I took Jimmy O'Brian
and Terry Wilkinson of Lake
Hamilton, Fla., out in 20-plus
knot winds and we had 13 trout
and two blues on live pinfish
under Cajun Thunders from 4.5 to
5.5 feet of water. It was a blast!
Literally!!
Billy Sims came down from'
Atlanta with two buddies and they
had a limit of 15 trout caught
from 2.5 feet of water on pink and
white Gulp fished under Cajun
Thunders.
No report from offshore this
week.

The Taylor County High
football team will tangle with'
Chiefland tonight in the Bulldogs'
home opener of the 2007 season.
Class 2B Chiefland will bring a
1-2 record into Dorsett Stadium
after getting their first win of the
season last week -- a 13-12
decision over winless Hamilton
County..
In its other two outings this
year, the Indians have lost to
Dixie County 14-0 and Williston
28-27.
The Bulldogs, also 1-2 on the
year, are coriming off a
heartbreaking 20-19 loss at Santa
Fe.
"Our kids played their hearts
out," Bulldog Head Coach' Price
Harris said. "There are still some
things that need fixing but the
effort of this team is not one of
them."
Harris.said' his team is ready to
play in the friendly confines 'of
Dorsett Stadium.
"We are so ready to be home.
Our fans have been great. They
have been traveling all over North ,
Florida the past month and I'm .
sure they're ready to stay home on

a Friday night," the coach said.
Harris said his team is a "little
banged up" after last Friday's game
but most should be ready to go
against the Indians.
Lineman Carl Padgett, who
injured an elbow last week, is
expected to play. Reggie King
suffered a concussion last week
and will miss this week's game.
Harris said Chiefland, under
first-year Coach Ajay Ulmer, is
loaded with athletes.
"Like us, a lot of their kids play
on both sides of the ball," Harris
said.
The coach said Chiefland runs
mostly out of an "I" formation and
utilizes a lot of runningbacks.

fashion winning 25-4 and 25-9
behind the strong serving of Vicky.
Jenereaux, Nancy Emery and

run their record to 2-0. Everyone
contributed in the match and
played very well as a team.
"It is amazing to me just how
well every one of our girls can

well together," Coach Reggie
Wentworth said.

Davis all got carries against
Hamilton. The Indian backfield
also features a 240-pound fullback
that blows holes open for the
quartet of runningbacks.
Indian quarterback Dan Galpin
has been quite accurate throwing
the ball. He completed six of nine,
passes last week for 113 yards.
One of his favorite receivers is
Travis Donald.
Chiefland also runs. out of the

shotgun formation occasionally
and will frequently substitute left-
handed quarterback Anthony
Stevens.
On defense, the Indians stunt a
lot from a 3-5 set.
Harris said Coach Ulmer and his
staff have done a good job.
"You can tell they are a well-
coached hall club," the coach said.
Kickoff for Friday night's game
is set for 7:30 p.m.

By POLLY WALLER

worthy of such an exclamation.
For anyone who has read Mary
Lou Whitfield's book, "815 West
Bay," you know where my interest
in this big dictionary stems from.
It is mentioned often in her writing
and has been her main source of
continuing education for many
years. During my visits to her
home at the end of West Bay
Street, when I have occasion to
enter the dining room,, I always
admire the big dictionary sitting
open on the buffet. It is a worn
volume, which speaks well of its
use. So I decided, after some
thought and wrangling with my
budget, I would order one for my
own use and to share with my
visitors at the bookstore.

After spending a few days with
it and perusing a tiny fraction of
the over 476,000 entries, a thought
occurred to me--Webster's Third
New International Dictionary
Unabridged is Mrs. Whitfield's
Internet. When I need to know a
fact or definition, I usually fire up
the Internet and Google it. Mrs.
Whitfield, on the other hand, just
walks over to the big dictionary on
her buffet, uses the thumb index
browser to navigate and instead of
a mouse, runs her finger over the
words till she finds what she's
looking for. There are no
frustrating pop-ups, she never gets
booted off and electricity is not
required. I think she may be on to
something.

Now available on DVD

'We are Marshall' is a poignant

story ready for football season

Every. fall, college football provides us with
inspirational stories of triumph, humbling tales of
ordinary .people overcoming extraordinary odds and
breathtaking reports of loss.
Every once in awhile, we get a story that has a bit of
all three, and along the way re-defines what it means to
play the game.. Perhaps no story fits this description
more than the tradegy that befell Marshall University in,
1970, in which a single event not only shattered coutless
lives, but threatened to leave forever broken an entire
community.
Released late last
year, "We are
Marshall" is the
story of the
aftermath of the
Nov. 14, 1970, plane
crash which killed -'
37 "Thundering
Herd" football
players, 8 members
of the coaching staff "Y
and 25 boosters.
Finally released
on DVD, perhaps
purposely in the
midst of college
football season, the
movie is not perfect,
but delivers, a
poignant look at a
football team--and .
an \entire town--in
mourning, and how
hard it can be to take
those first hesitant
steps forward
following a tradegy. : 7
The crash left only
four players along
with receivers coach
William "Red"
Dawson (Matthew
Fox), who, at the
last minute, took
over a recruiting
assignment to allow
another coach to
go home early, a
decision which would save his life and haunt him for the
rest of it.
The university as well as the entire town' .of
Huntington, W. Va., is left in mourning. The 75 people
killed on the plane included prominent lawyers and
business people, four of the town's six doctors; a city
councilman and a state senator. Seventy children in town
lost a parent in the crash and 18 were left orphaned.
One of the biggest decisions facing the university is
whether or not they should cancel the football program
for the next season.
Some, including Paul Griffen (Ian McShane), booster
member and father of the team's star runningback who
was among those killed on the plane, say playing
football would only be a reminder to everyone who had
lost someone of the tragedy.
' Others, however, argue that restoring the football

program is the only way to truly honor those lost. They
are lead by Nate Ruffin (Anthony Mackie), a player who
had been unable to travel due to an injury.
Despite many calls to cancel the upcoming season,
spurred by a massive show of support from the student
. body, the university decides to go ahead with the next,
season and hires coach Jack Lengyel.o (Matthew
McConaughey) to rebuild the team.
The new tearn'which consists of freshmen (the school
had to appeal to. the NCAA to allow them to play) and
players from the
university's soccer
and basketball
teams, must face
the expectations of
an entire town as
well as the
surviving players
from the old team.
I was very
S. apprehensive
-ab ,.. about McG
:.t's s t directing this
S .,A ,,, .movie. Known for
mi .sic videos and
the action-packed
pair of "Charlie's
Angels" movies,
this seemed to be a
great departure for
him. I did not have
high expectations
for the end result.
Reportedly,
MNcG %%ent to
University to get
their blessing to
film a me.o ie about
the event that, to
this day, is still
honored and
remembered. He
won them over,
and after seeing
the movie, I can
say he. had won me.
over too.
He is able, with
a script by Jamie Lindon, to honor the story without the
usual Hollywood overproduction. At first, I was
surprised by how much time was given to several
storylines outside the team, including the grieving father
and Annie Cantrell'(Kate Mara), who was engaged to his
'son. But I-realized, as 'McG obviously had, that "'We are
Marshall," is not truly a football movie. It is a movie
about a team rebuilding for sure, but it is also about-a
school and a town, in mourning. As Lengyel says at one
point, "It's not about winning or losing. It's not even
about how we play the game."
It's simply the fact that they were playing.
The DVD is .available in widescreen and full screen
"formats- and comes with the documentary, "Legendary
Coaches.",
"We are Mashall" is rated PG for emotional thematic
material, a crash scene and mild language.

she became the full-time member
for about three years. She left the
band to raise their new family.
Clint is a senior in high school as
well as the 2006 Florida State

a title he won after playing the
banjo for just over a year. Not only
is he an accomplished banjo
player, but he also plays guitar,
bass and some mandolin. He is

having written several of the songs
the family performs. When not

Travis Perry (dobro, vocals) has
been a member of the band since
2006, but has been involved in
music from the age of 10 when his
mother bought him his first guitar.
He made a living in the music
industry for 15 years before finally,
as his dad would say, he got a "real
job" in real estate. Perry makes his

home with his wife Laurie and
daughter Bradi in Dothan, where
he owns and operates a bluegrass
music shop and recording studio in
Dothan.
Steve Kirkland (lead vocals,

bluegrass since 1985 as a member
of three groups throughout the

age 12. By the time he turned 20,
his musical interests turned to

country music. Five years later he )
began playing bluegrass music. He
plays mandolin, dobro and is
currently learning to play the
banjo. Corbin began playing bass a
year and a half ago when a local

and in need of a bass player.

Southern Lite

keeps traditions

alive and well
Bluegrass has been described by
many as one of the most uplifting
and emotional forms of musical I "
expression today.
Carrying on the tradition is
Florida's own-Southern Lite.
For the last 20 years, all five -
enthusiastic members have been -.. ,
performing and sharing their .c
talents throughout the country in 1
different band settings. k
The band was born of necessity
in 2001, when legendary fiddle
player Vassar Clements hired them..........
as a back-up band to perform.
The rest is history. Ernie Evans from Southern Lite

Band members bring decades of

musical experience to the stage

Cow Lick Bluegrass
'-Four former members o-f the Tallahassee bluegrass band, Fifth Gear, joined together in
2-605, picking up a banjoist along the way, to make Cow Lick Bluegrass Band. Three of the
members have contributed original songs to the band's mix of old standards, gospel and rare
treasures from bluegrass" lesser known artists. They can be seen at pubs from Wakulla
County to Southern Georgia. The band includes Bobby Cutts (vocals, harmonica), Kit Goodner
(tWiftar), Carrie Hamby (upright bass, vocals), Dennis Hardin (banjo, dobro, vocals) and
David Leporati (mandolin, vocals).

PURE & SIMPLE
Continued from page 4
Simple.
Mike Hutto handles lead guitar
duties for Pure & Simple and sings
baritone, except when he sings
lead vocals, on several songs. He

began playing guitar around eight
years of age and he also plays
fiddle, mandolin and banjo.
Ronnie Retherford (mandolin)
has been playing mandolin off and
on since 1976. He became
interested in bluegrass music in
college and had been playing

guitar for a couple of years when a
banjo player encouraged him to
buy a mandolin to help keep
a steady rhythm for their
fledgling group. He has played.
both mandolin and guitar in
several different bands through the'
years.
