Driver injured
Traffic in the southbound lanes of U.S. -19 was stopped for a short time while City of Perry
firefighters and Doctors' Memorial Hospital EMTs extracted an injured driver following a
rear-end crash Wednesday morning. Perry Police Department officers routed traffic around
the scene until the driver could be transported to DMH.

signature dishes at first 'Taste'
Nine local restaurants will be
showcasing their signature dishes
during downtown's first "Taste of
Perry" food show Saturday, Sept.
15.

announced the participating
restaurants Thursday.
"We are so excited to have
Doctors' Memorial Hospital
Windows Cafe, Deal's Oyster
House, Espresso Yourself Cafe,
Goodman's BBQ, Huddle House,
Mama's "Italian, Old Mexico,
Rosehead Junction and The
Timbers of Perry sign on as
participants," Ter Maat said.
Coordinated by the Downtown
Perry Association, the event will
be held at The Timbers (located on
Helen Street) from noon to 6 p.m.
"The Taste of Perry is a
fundraising event, with a portion of
the proceeds donated to the
downtown Snowfest planned this
year for Dec. 1," Ter Maat said.
Admission will be $3 per
carload at the gate; no coolers will
be permitted but everyone is
encouraged to "bring your lawn
chairs or a blanket."

City of Perry, American Legion
get all their ducks in a row...
What better way to learn about the letter "D" than to take a
stroll and visit the ducks at the Duck Pond? That's just what
pre-k students from the navy and garnet pods did.Thursday
morning.
City officials and American
Legion members have reached a
tentative agreement regarding the
upkeep of the downtown Duck
Pond.
"State statutes prevent (the city)
from doing any sort of
maintenance on private property.
However, there is a provision that
allows the city to go in and work
on the property if we receive
something of value from the
property owner. In this case, it will
be the American Legion allowing
us to continue to use the pond as a
holding site for our storm water. I
met with Legion members earlier
this week and they agreed to that
proposal," City Manager Bob
Brown said Wednesday.
"I still have to take it before the
city council, but I feel they will
support this action. As a sign of
good faith, we agreed to go ahead
and cut the grass at the park
surrounding the pond," he added.
The city--which has maintained
the pond grounds for decades--
recently stopped its clean-up after
learning that the land actually
belonged to the American
Legion.
Legion members were also
surprised to learn they owned the
property and were working to
develop a solution to the
maintenance issue.
Shaun Proudman of the city's recreation department made
quick work of cutting grass around the Duck Pond Thursday
morning. A work crew from Taylor Correctional Institution
also helped with the clean-up.

living room did double-duty, also serving as a
sleeping area, with a second bedroom and the

like a second skin seven days a week. She ;-.:
wasn't pompous or preachy, she just lived right
inside and outside the church. During -.
childhood and well into my teens Granny would.
hold cottage prayer meetings at her home on,.
Saturday night. It was a family affair. very
much like church. Granny would move the-- ,
living room furniture as close to the wall as
possible to make room for folding chairs. The
informal service would begin around dark- -
thirty. The time was set to accommodate those. ,
who worked long hours, whether at a public job I
or at the family farm. With chairs filled, a time J
of greeting was shared with handshakes and_.
neckhugs. Granny would extend a welcome an
open with prayer. Songs were sung in happy ,
abandon accompanied by a guitar, if there .
happened to be one, clapping hands and heart
amens. Needs for the community were lifted up
to God in prayer by all in attendance. Age neve ,
seemed to be a factor for answered prayer since
Granny believed God had created all fo :

praying, child or adult, it's the heart that
counts," said Granny. '
I enjoyed the sweet fellowship that I sensed:-
during those meetings. My spiritual growth was|
fed a steady diet of right living simply from the m
example set by Granny. It has been a beacon
that has refused to be dimmed by time. '|| ^

admissions and babies born in the (then) new Doctors' Memorial Hospital.The facility will celebrate its 50th
anniversary Sunday, Sept. 9,with an open house beginning at I p.m. B .
The first person to be admitted to Doctors' Memorial Hospital was Mrs. R. L. Hill, who
entered Monday morning after the dedication. Sunday. Since that time 24 more persons have
entered, although 18 of them have since that date been released.
The first baby born in the new hospital was Willie Joe Jolley,son of Mr.and Mrs.D.E.Jolley,
and with the distinction of being the first baby he will receive all the gifts offered by
merchants of the city for the first baby. The gifts are now on display in the waiting room of
the hospital.

of Doctors' Memorial Hospital,
announced to the county
commission that the fire which
destroyed most of the old hospital
building caused $388,000 in
damages. The building was
adequately covered by insurance,
but those funds were not expected
for 60 to 90 days.

John M. Taylor V was born to

on July 28 at the U.S. Naval
Hospital in Jacksonville. Mrs.
Taylor was the former Bea Burns
of Perry; the baby weighed 8

On Aug. 10, Tonya Johnson was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Tommy
Johnson stationed at the naval base
in Naples, Italy. She weighed 8
pounds, 4 ounces.
Richard Wright Schwab was the
newest family member for Mr. and
Mrs. Rodney Paul Schwab. He
was born on Aug. 17 and weighed
8 pounds, 14 ounces.
Paul DeWayne Yates was born to

the two concluded, but they

Silver Springs and Six-Gun
Territory. Both boys were

scheduled to surrounding areas,
including Steinhatchee, Keaton
Beach, Madison, St. Marks and
Econfina River State Park.
"Motel rooms and campgrounds
are filled to capacity as the group
makes their plans," said Tayldr.
The event will be held at Forest
Capital State Park, beginning
Thursday, Sept. 13, and will run
through Saturday.
The chamber will be holding a
welcome cook-out for the group on
Thursday at the park beginning at
5:30 p.m.
All bikers will be attending this
event.
If you would like to attend the
dinner, you must purchase advance
tickets at the chamber office.
The group also will be escorted
through the downtown area Friday
for a Gaslight Bike Parade. The
bikes will start at Forest Capital
State Park, run down Jefferson
Street and around the courthouse
square and then end back at the
park.
The parade begins at 7 p.m. For

Saturday brings first birthday
Landyn Rylee Hendry, the daughter of Kane and Dustie Hendry, will
celebrate her first birthday on Saturday, Sept. 8. Maternal grandparents of
the honoree are Diana McRory and the late Bryan McRory; her paternal
grandparents are Griff and Faye Hendry. Also celebrating will be Landyn
Iylee's brother, Canyon Lee Gray, who is 5.

County Extension Agent Clay Olson reminds Taylor
County's landscape gardeners that hanging basket
plants suffer mightily in this hot weather.
, "Depending on what they are, they may need
watering every other day. Plastic hanging baskets may
only need twice-weekly water, depending on the spil
mix and type plant being grown. Frequent checks are
key to keeping them healthy with adequate water," he
said.
"Remember that ny hanging basket that is looking
bad from all the heat can be revitalized by cutting it
back to the rim of the pot.
"Most plants used in hanging baskets tolerate this
severe grooming (example: Periwinkles, Swedish Ivy,
Verbena, Geranium; Begonia, etc.) and quickly
resprout."

luncheon/meeting of the
Roseheads of Perry, chapter 2207
of the Red Hat Society. This
charming cafe is located inside
Trenton's historic 1925 Coca-Cola
I building and is connected to a quilt
shop and fabric shops. The group
of 18 Red Hatters and 2 Pink
Hatters had reservations for noon
on Saturday, August 25.
The August committee of
Barbara Patrick, Debbie Beach,
June Lytle and Suezette Stephens
arrived early to place table gifts of
Red Hat stickers, sticky notes in a
Red Hat holder (made by the
August Committee), and a red
drawstring bag of candies at each
place setting. A purple napkin
adorned with red hats completed
the look.
Around '11:30 A.M., the ladies
began to arrive to enjoy looking at
the many pretty items in the shops.
Each lady then chose a seat, gave
her drink order, and began visiting
together.
Barbara Patrick called the group
together, and Norma McGuire said

Relay For Life team reported

individuals. Updates to the
membership list included a name
change because of a marriage in
July and a street number change.

the Relay team's possible
participation in the Taste of Perry
event planned for Saturday,
September 15, at the Timbers.
Cheryl Gregory announced that
members interested in the group's
entry in the Forest Festival Parade
should meet at 6:30 p.m. on
Monday, Sept..10, at Pizza Hut.
Also, all members who are
interested in being on the 2008
Relay team, or being a strong
supporter of the team, will meet at
6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27,
again at Pizza Hut. Debi Limoges
gave the treasurer's report and
stated that the group's charter dues
have been paid.

Day Weekend.
Ray Carlisle of O'Brien had his
limit Jbf trout, in under an hour,
last Thursday, while fishing with
live pinfish under Cajuns. Ray
was fishing in 6 7 feet of water
right on the last hour of the high
tide. He had a 21 inch trout to top
his stringer. Ray and a buddy had
their limit of scallops and trout,
:-Friday as well, and fished the live
-baitunder Cajuns, again, in 6 8
feet of water.

Commission balances 07-08 budget, concern turns to next year

$266,000 in other revenue streams,
including $225,000 in increased
interest earnings.
Still, commissioners faced a
$308,125 deficit between recurring
revenue and 'recurring
expenditures in the general fund.
To begin with, the commission
reduced their contributions to the
United Way, Chamber of
Commerce and the Taylor County
Development Authority by three
percent.
The county also eliminated a
planner position that
commissioners have been seeking
for some time.
The board also limited each
constitutional officer to a $1,000
contingency fund. The remainder
of the request contingency was
instead included in the board's
contingency's fund. This allowed
the commission to reclassify the
funds from "transfers to
constitutional officers"
(representing recurring operating
expenses) to "reserves for
contingency" (not recurring
reserves). This helped reduce the
operating deficit.
As for the constitutional officers,
the supervisor of elections office's
budget includes a 31.45 increase
over the current year; the sheriffs

office, a 2.07 increase; clerk of
court, a 3.77 increase; tax
collector's office, a 7.55 decrease;
and property appraiser's office, a
8.32 percent increase.
In the MSTU fund,
commissioners reduced the
requested general operating budget
of Taylor County Fire/Rescue by
$5,000.
By the end of the budget
workshops, commissioners had
balanced both the general fund and
MSTU fund.
Commissioners are keeping a
wary eye on the future, however,
with the January ballot initiative
which would provide for a "super-
sized" homestead exemption.

music fans braved the rain to listen
and watch the second Perry Opry
held at Forest Capital State Park.
While many from Perry
attended the event, a significant
number of fans traveled from the
Quincy, Monticello and
Valdosta areas in support of their
favorite artists, in spite of the
torrential thunderstorms that
surrounded Perry during the
evening, organizer Andy Jackson
said.
Internet listenership of the event
nearly doubled with audiences in
Orlando, Denver, Nashville, South
and North Carolina, and Miami,
he added.
Despite being scheduled as a
three-hour show, the crowd was
treated to almost four hours of
music.

September has its fair share of
bombs, but has its diamonds too
It's that time again, time to pull out the program and
see what we can expect at the movie theater this month.
September is somewhat of an in-between month as far as
movies go. The summer is over, but the holiday season
is still at least a month away. Many studios are trying to
dump off the rest of the movies they couldn't unload in
August. On the other hand, we're getting close enough to
the end of the year that studios are also beginning to
position their heavy hitters for Oscar consideration.
The month starts today wilh a trio of movies,
beginning with "3:10 to Yuma," a Western with the
unlikely duo of Christane Bale and Russell Crowe. In
the film, rancher Dan Evans (Bale) volunteers to
transport outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) to town and meet
the daily train, so he can stand trial for his crimes. Of
course his gang isn't going to let that happen without a
fight. Westerns aren't my usual pick for a movie, but
considering the talent and with director James Mangold
coming off his successful "Walk the Line," this could be
a real contender come Oscar season.
Up next is a film that is certainly not going to be
mentioned around awards time: the Clive Owen and
Paul Giamatti-starring "Shoot 'Em Up." You have to
love movies with titles that clearly tell you what's going
to happen. JThe trailers have shown both great action
scenes and humor thanks to its talented actors, and if
director Michael Davis can pull it off," this could be a
high-octave "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang."
Finishing off the weekend is "The Brothers
Solomon," opening in about 650 theatres across the
country, about two brothers (Will Arnett and Will Forte)
who try to find a woman to have a baby with to satisfy
their father's dying wish. Remember what I said about
studios dumping movies?
Next weekend sees four more movies opening wide,
including the Jodi Foster-starring revenge flick, "The
Brave One." Revenge movies really haven't been doing
well with critics or at the box office lately (see "Death
Sentence"). Even if "The Brave One" doesn't become a
hit with movies-goers, however, it may be Foster's ticket
back to Oscar town.

for the comedy, "Mr. 1Woodcock," in which a man
tormented as a child by his gym teacher returns home
years later to find that his mother is dating him. I liked
Scott when he first hit the scene in the "American Pie"
movies, but there's only so many times you can play the
same type of role.
In "The Hunting Party," starring Richard Gere and
Terrance Howard, a couple of journalists and a
cameraman set out to find Bosnia's top war criminal,
only to find themselves in the crosshairs. I hadn't even
heard of this one before preparing this column, so this
one will probably disappear quicker than the war
criminals they're hunting.
Perhaps the most interesting movie of the weekend (if
not the month) is the South Korean-made, English
language "Dragon Wars." Said to be one of the most
expensive movies ever-'made in that country, the film,
which has an American cast, is set in the city of Los
Angeles while two dragon-led armies try to destroy one
another. I caught a trailer for'this one online several
years back, and have to say, this could be a sleeper hit if
anyone actually hears about it.
On Sept. 21, the David Cronenberg-directed "Eastern
Promises" expands to a wide release. Starring an almost
unrecognizable Viggo Mortensen ("Lord of the Rings")
and Naomi Watts, the film is about a hospital midwife
who, following the murder of a prostitute, is caught p .
in London's seedy underground and the Russian mafia.
There has been somewhat of a void in the
crime/thriller/drama genre since last year's "The
Departed," so this one could find a good audience
looking for the next hit.
Also opening wide is "Resident Evil: Extinction,"
the third and probably final (if you listen to the title) film
in the zombie franchise based on the popular video game
series. The first "Resident Evil" was a surprise success,
mixing sleek set designs, solid acting and a killer
soundtrack, and managed to rise above its genre. The
first sequel was somewhat of a let down, losing much of
the quality of the original, but suitably set up things up
for the third installment. It's never a good sign, however,
when only two the five characters left alive appear to be
returning. Only time will tell.
In "Good Luck Chuck," Charlie Logan (Dane
Cooke) discovers he has a gift. Any woman who sleeps
with him will marry the next person she dates. Soon he
had a bit of racket going, until he meets a girl he really
likes. This appears to be the R-rated comedy for
September, and with a somewhat unique concept and the
fact that adult comedies have done really well this year,
we may be hearing more about this one.
Joining them is. "Into the Wild," the Sean Penn-
directed adaptation of the book of the same name by Jon
Krakauer,.recounting the true story of a young man who
travels to Alaska to live off the land. Those who know
the fate of real-life Christopher McCandless can debate
over the value of making this movie, but Hollywood
likes Penn, so this one will still have some buzz around
it come Oscar time.
Finishing the week is "Sydney White," a modem
update of "Snow White" with Nickelodeon-stable
Amanda Bynes spreading her wings a bit to the land of
PG-13. In the movie, a freshman sorority pledge decides
'to buck the system and joins together with seven
outcasts to fight back. There isn't much out there this
month for teenage girls, so I guess this is what they have
to look forward to for movie entertainment. That's really
a shame when you think about it.
The final weekend of the month will see. three
additional movies hit theaters, starting with "Tle
Kingdom." This action/drama is set in Saudi Arabia
following.a terrorist bombing which leaves more than
100 people dead. A crack team of FBI investigators
(including Chris Coopei, Jaimie Foxx and Jennifer
Garner) is sent in to investigate, only to find themselves
targets. Reportedly, this was to be released earlier this
year, but after positive test screenings, the studio
decided to push it back to position it for the awards
season. Between the cast and the excellent looking
trailers, this is the top pick for the month for me,
Also opening Sept. 28, is "Feast of Love," which
appears to be 2007's ensemble romantic comedy/drama.
A group of friends in Oregon finds themselves within
the various incarnations of love. Critics and audiences
tend to find these films palatable and usually do pretty
well as the box office and with the awards.
And finally, last and probably least, is the latest
family-oriented comedy starring former professional
wrestler, The Rock. In "The Game Plan," he plays an
NFL star who finds out he is the father of a precocious
little girl and has to juggle the task of fatherhood and
leading his team to the championship. If it sounds
familiar, it's because it's been done before... a lot.
So there you go: the good, the bad and the bombs.
Despite the dumping, you should be able to find enough
good films to make an enjoyable afternoon.

of "Show Boat." She then toured
Teri Hansen
with the first National Company
for nearly three years (Los
Angeles, Vancouver, Toronto,
Denver,' Minneapolis, St. Louis,
and Cleveland).
Her 2002 Broadway debut in
"The Boys from Syracuse" met
with great acclaim. She can also

The Taylor County High School Auxilary Guard attended a University of Florida band camp.
during the summer. While there, the group learned routines and practiced fundamentals. The
Gatorettes instructed the local majorettes, while the UF Flag Team assisted their Taylpr,
counterparts. The.students stayed in the dorms during the three-day camp and toured ffie
football stadium as well as the music facilities on campus.
