UF passes
on Buckeye
for research
ethanol plant
The University of jFlorida
selected South Florida sugar
producer Florida Crystals over
Buckeye Tuesday as the site to
build a cellulosic ethanol research
plant.
For the past several months,
Buckeye officials have been
pursuing the facility that would
commercially produce one to two
million gallons of ethanol per year
as well as serve as a research and
development lab. The plant is
being financed by a $20 million
state grant.
The university received six
proposal for the facility but
narrowed the list down to two for
site visits. A contingency from the
university visited Buckeye last
month.
The site selection committee
made its recommendation to select
Florida Crystals on a motion by
UF Researcher Lonnie Ingram.
As part of his motion, Ingram
further moved to "retain Buckeye
Cellulose as an outstanding site
and potential partner in the event
problems arise."
Buckeye' Spokesman Dan
Simmons said his company is
disappointed that the Buckeye site
was not the first choice for the
ethanol research facility.

would be strong competition for
the facility. We congratulate the
Florida Crystals organization for
their successful proposal. Buckeye,
will continue to explore
opportunities to expand our
production of green energy\ and
reduce otir need for fossil fuels."

for EMS
Newly hired Doctors' Memorial
Hospital's CEO Charles Darcy
-apparently made an early
impression on county
commissioners at Tuesday night's
.board meeting, as they agreed to
turn over some $214,000 in
remaining Emergency Medical
Services (EMS) subsidy funds.
Less than two .weeks after
officially starting his new job,
Darcy introduced himself to
commissioners, inviting the board
to take part in creating a strategic
plan for the hospital and sparking
discussions over the county's
funding of EMS.
In the curient'fiscal year, which
ends Sept. 30, the county agreed to
subsidize the hospital's EMS
program up to $300,000, paid in
$25,000 monthly installments.
'According to the agreement,
however, "if there is any profit
made by the hospital in operation
of the emergency services, said
profit shall be returned to the
county."
Previously, the hospital
administrator would appear before
the commission each month,
requesting that portion of the
$25,000 to make the program
break even. To date, only $86,000
has been requested this fiscal year.
Along with Chief Financial
Officer Terri Parsons, Darcy
requested the remainder' of those
funds to help with physician
recruitment efforts and replacing .
aging equipment at the hospital.
In exchange for the funds,

Stealing $$$ in copper wire
Thieves nabbed
in the act by PD
Tips from local citizens led to
the arrest of two Sarasota men who
were the targets of a south Florida
task force investigation into a
series of copper wiring thefts.
Around midnight\ Wednesday,
Aug. 22, the Perry Police
Department (PPD) received a
complaint of noise coming from
the unoccupied former Winn Dixie
store in the Taylor Square
Shopping Center.
While checking out the area,
Patrol Officer Heather Murphy
encountered Robert Cain, 24.
"His story as to why he was at
the scene was suspicious," Captain
Jamie Cruse said.
"The original call said it
sounded like someone was
working behind the old grocery
store. Upon further investigation,
Murphy discovered the store's
generator had been tampered with
and that the building had been
broken into. Other evidence at the
scene--fuel spills, tools and
footprints similar'to Cain's--led
into the nearby woods," he related.
Murphy, along with officers Sgt.
Lin Gray and Ptl. Kyle Johnson,
followed .the trail of evidence and
discovered a white 2006 Ford King
Ranch diesel truck filled with
several hundred feet of large gauge,
copper wiring.
"The officers found additional
evidence, including night vision
equipment. Based on Cain's
appearance (the presence of diesel
and grease on his body) and other
factors, he was arrested for
burglary of the, building." Cruse
-said. - .--- -..
The truck was registered to an
owner in Sarasota; Cain himself
also gave a Sarasota address.
Later that day, the police
received a call from a business in
the same shopping center reporting
a suspicious person.
"They related that this man was
asking to use the phone and had
talked another employee into
going to Winn Dixie to get him a
money gram. Taylor County
Sheriffs Office Deputy Lance
Burford and Ptl. Dwight Norris
both responded to the call and
observed the unknown subject to
have the same appearance as Cain,
smelling of diesel fuel and having
cuts on his hands and arms," Cruse
said.
"His story was suspicious and so
the officers asked him to come to
the police department for an
interview. It was during the
-\interview that the man, identified
as David Peter Lawrence, 20,
admitted his involvement in the
burglary at the old Winn Dixie
store."
Officers also- found out that the
men "were subjects of interest in a
South Florida Task Force's active
investigation into a series of
copper thefts," Cruse said.
Lawrence was arrested 'on an
outstanding warrant from Sarasota
and faces charges of burglary and
grand theft; Cain was charged with
burglary, grand theft, felony
criminal mischief and possession
of burglary tools.

next budget and wants feedback
from city residents on the proposal.

less than half of the projected
$400,000 deficit facing the city for
2007-08.
"I would like to hear from more
citizens before making a final

On the revenue side, the council
is also looking at rate changes for
both water and sewer utilities. The
new rates would result in a $1.78
net increase for the average city
household; however, it is area
businesses which are likely to
receive the biggest impact under
the proposed change.

Close call,
A family from Bermuda escaped injury when the van they were traveling in was involved in a rollover crash on Highway 19
South Wednesday afternoon. The two adults and the two children, ages four years and five months respectively, were all out of
the car by the time law enforcement arrived on the scene, which was located about one mile south of Salem. Florida Highway
Patrol Trooper W. Ernest stated that the driver told him he had started to fall asleep and overcorrected when the vehicle left the
roadway, causing the rollover.
Buckeye Chairman and CEO
John Crowe had good news for
those attending an information-
sharing breakfast Wednesday at
Rosehead Junction.
The former Perry resident and
top executive at the Foley plant
said his company recorded its best
earnings in six years for the period
ending June 31 and he expects the
picture to look even better in 2008.
"The markets, worldwide, are
strong right now. We can sell
everything we can make," he said.
During the 2007 fiscal year, the
company earned $30.1 million
compared to earnings of $2.0
million in 2006.
Net sales for fiscal, year 2007
were $769 million, 5.6 percent
above the $728 million achieved in
the prior year.

'Frivolous suits cost taxpayers
Amid questions of intimidation
and "frivolous suits," the Taylor
County Commission agreed
Tuesday to pay the legal fees for
Commissioner Clay Bethea as well
as former Taylor County Planning
Board members Bryan Bethea and
Kevin Guenthner in the defense
against three recently dismissed
ethics complaints.
Attorney Bill Blue, who
represented the three officials,
asked the county to pay the fees,
totaling "$14,512, per a
indemnification policy adopted by
the commission earlier this year.
Commissioner Rudolph Parker
began discussions by saying "it
was right" that the county cover
the costs.
"I won't judge the motives," he
said of the complaints. "It seems to
me the cost of litigation in cases
such as this should be borne by the
party which loses the case."
"I think we should pay it,"
Parker said. "If possible, I would to
see us try to recoup these costs."
Commission Chairman Malcolm
Page added that the county's
legislative delegation would be
here Aug. 30 and suggested that
those who felt that the law should
be changed (as to defense costs of
ethics complaints) could discuss
the issue with their representatives.
Parker motioned to pay Blue's
bill for the Clay Bethea complaint;
County Commissioner Patterson
seconded. Clay Bethea abstained
from voting and the measure
passed 4-0.
Parker also motioned to pay the
costs for Bryan Bethea and
Guenthner with County
Commissioner Mark Wiggins
seconding each. Clay Bethea
abstained from the first vote
because Bryan Bethea is his
cousin. He likewise abstained from
the third vote in what he called "an
abundance of caution" since
Guenthner works for the same
company as he does, Buckeye.
Blue thanked the commissioners
for paying the costs, adding that
he felt the board should look into
ways to assess those costs on the
losing parties in such cases. He
added that due to prior experience
with the Commission on Ethics, he
was not attempting to recoup the
costs through them.
Diane Whitfield, who filed the
complaint against Clay Bethea,
then addressed the board.
"I wasn't aware that I was
entering a lawsuit but... filing a
complaint. I hate to see any citizen
in this room or in this community
feel intimidated that they could not
file a complaint," she said. "There
is an ethics commission of very
smart people and attorneys that
makes a decision."
She said she looked at the law
and the forms supplied by the
Commission on Ethics.
"To a plain old citizen, it looked
like my community needed to pay
attention to those forms and those
opportunities. I realize we're small,
but that doesn't excuse us from
knowing or trying to work through
the law.
"The only motive a person can
possibly have is to make their
community one we can be proud
of," Whitfield said.
"You think that's the only motive
a person can have?" Parker asked.
"I disagree with you.
"I'm also concerned about
intimidation," he said. "What I'm
concerned about is frivolous suits
trying to intimidate the people that
are working for this county for
fiothing."
At that point, Page called for a
recess in the meeting, ending the
discussion.

"it was so choked with sand that
we couldn't get through." The
three pushed the boat as far as they
could, and then decided to wait on
the tide. The tide came in around 9
p.m. and the three started back, but
had no flashlight. They soon
noticed the motor "bottomed out"
and they had somehow entered a
slough off the main river where
they ran aground. They decided to
wait for daylight to attempt their
return.
In the meantime, Brince Hendry
and Ralph Smith set out with a
light in search of the three, and
were soon joined by Bill Adams,
Larry Hayden, John Knowles and
members of the Perry Big Bend
Modulators.
Batchelor spotted Hendry's boat
light about 11:30 p.m. and pulled
anchor to go meet him and Smith.
They two assured them they could
find the channel and lead Batchelor
and the boys home.
"And the next thing I knew, we
were out in the gulf," said
Batchelor. "Finally some other
guys came out" and both the boats
were found by James Smith "who
had a real strong light." They
followed him, reaching. the dock
by 3:45 a.m.
The newspaper reported that the
three had no ill effects from the
adventure. "We had plenty to eat,"
said Batchelor, "cold drinks, ice,
water and some chicken which we
finished about 8:30."
Were the boys frightened? "No,"
he said, "in fact, they thought it
was funny."
ABDOO DIES

A Taylor County pioneer, Tom
Abdoo, died while visiting
relatives in his birthplace of Zahle,
Lebanon. The news of his death
was announced by City
Councilman Joe Nola who was
Abdoo's nephew.

Gulf Telephone's application for a
rate increase. General Manager
E.L. Cox Jr. pointed out that the
local company had not applied to
raise rates in 11 years. Base
service was currently $6.50, and
the increase would make it $9.

The Bulldogs' smallest player
is Ronnie Jones who weighs only
130 pounds and is 5'7"; the largest
player is James Campbell who is

The team is largely a team a
seniors, with 23 in the line-up,
accompanied by nine juniors and
five sophomores.
The team boasts three Ratliffs
and one set of twins. The Ratliffs
are Glenn and Sebring (brothers),

Theperfect vacation-
For two weeks in June and July I left the daily routine..,
for a vacation. It was as near perfect as I had wished for...
No longer was I tied to daily chores that refuse to leave,,.:
me alone. All that lay before me was 14 of 24 hours that :,
I didn't need to follow a schedule nor be any particular. ,
place at any given time. As I said it was near perfect. ::
The anticipation I experienced was childlike as the
plane lifted off from Jacksonville to carry my family and; ,:
me 3,000 miles across America to the state of
Washington in just six incredible hours. As visions of ....
pioneers making this same crossing danced in my head I
was thankful the good Lord chose to have me born in th6'-
20th century. After an overnight stay with one of my-
favorite nieces, Carol Tedder Brown and husband
Nehemiah, we
traveled the short
distance to my
brother Bob's house
in Longview. At our
arrival the entire
neighborhood must
have heard the
shouts of joy as
Bobby and s
Geraldine opened
the door to their .
house and their r
hearts to welcome i
us there.
It felt like "coming
home" even though
it was miles from e .
our home. Never
before had I realized The Leggett family
the saying, "Home is where the heart is" was so true. At"'
that moment my heart was at my big brother's house and:
it was just where I wanted to be. I'm sure it ha-
something to do with the fact that he has held my heart
securely in his hands from the moment I was born. Being-:..
the oldest of the Leggett siblings, and with me arriving at:
the number four slot, Bobby was called to baby-sitting-
duty most of the time. From the stories that are told
about the relationship, it was a willing situation on both
our parts and it forged a bond that has lasted more than"'
60 years. I love my big brother, he is my hero and one of'
the'leepers of my childhood memories. One" of th6I."`'
memories, although I was too young to recall it myself,'"
was the time some of Bobby's friends were enticing him
to ditch me and hang out with them. The story is they(
teased him unmercifully about being a sissy that-'
changed diapers. That was pretty close to fighting words:"
for a teenage boy of the 1940's. I can appreciate the
struggle that ensued as he looked from the tiny little face:
of ,responsibility to the carefree call of his friends.
Somehow the tug that connected our heartstrings made
the song of responsibility the winner. With pride in hies
voice he announced, "Catch you later, boys, my sistehi'
needs me now." '
I can only imagine the amount, of times Bobby chosen
me over other activities. He's never complained. If the'
subjectt comes up. Bobby laughs and relates some of m:'
antics and how he was able to handle them. When I see'
the gleam of mischief sparkle in his eyes I move the--:
conversation to safer ground, namely away from me and:
my doings.
The year I turned six Bobby had the good sense to
marry one of Taylor County's beauties, Geraldine Gunter.:
'Much to my good fortune, she also took me under her
wing.. She moved into the spot in my heart occupied by e
Bobby and continues to share that spot to this day. The
remainder of my days as a child in Taylor County are all
tied up with Bobby and Geraldine. Trips t6 the beaches,
rides to get ice cream, dinners at their house, happy
times. One particular time stands out. Bobby joined the
Marines and was stationed in Homestead. Somehow I
was elected to go spend some of my summer vacation
with them. I must have been eight or nine. Up until then
my travel never included cities. With big-eyed wonder I
watched from the car as we passed through busy cities
enroute to Homestead. I loved every minute of it as Bobby
and Geraldine expanded my horizon to include things
that Taylor County didn't offer at the time. -
My time spent with them this summer was much the
same. With the same generosity they opened up their-"
home and hearts to me and my family to once again
broaden my horizon. We explored all the wonder that the
state of Washington offers. Mt. St. Helen continues to
spew smoke from its crater, Mt. Hood gave us a chance-
to play in snow in July and we stood on the shore of the
Pacific Ocean to watch the whales migrating north. And,.
even though the Leggetts' live far from where they grew
up, the food and
the conversation

Meetings dominated by special interests?

intimidated or threatened claims
for legal fees if they lose.
They also stated that while many
people would show up to local
government meetings, only
speciall interests" would be
allowed to speak, according to the
report.
The Florida Commission on
Ethics dismissed the three
complaints in question in July
during hearings held in
Talliahassee.
Whitfield filed the complaint
against Clay Bethea on Dec. 20,
alleging he violated state nepotism
laws when his cousin, Bryan
Bethea, was appointed to the
Taylor County Planning Board in
January 2005.
According to a release from the
Ethics Commission, it was
'W hy would you file
this many complaints
against public officials,
and then not even bother
to attend the hearings
which were publicly
noticed?'
"determined that because Bethea
sought the advice of counsel prior
to the appointment of his first
cousin to the planning board, took
no affirmative action to make the
appointment, and abstained from
the vote for the appointment, the
public interest would not be served
by further proceedings on the
matter."
Whitfield declined comment at
the time about her complaint's
dismissal, but added, "I want our
community to be the best it can
be."
The other two complaints
against planning board members
Bryan Bethea and Guenthner were
filed by Rebecca Edwards and
Taitt respectively, alleged a
conflict of interest existed when
they voted on two .comprehensive
plan amendments pertaining to the
Taylor Energy Center (TEC).
The energy consortium behind
the proposed power plant had a
contract in place to purchase a
3,000-acre site partially owned by
Buckeye, Which employs both
planning board members.
According to the Commission
on Ethics, "probable cause was
found to believe that Kevin
Guenthner and Bryan Bethea,
Taylor County Planning Board
members, had voting conflicts
when they voted on a measure
which inured to the special private
gain or loss of their employer or a
parent organization or subsidiary
of their employer. Probable cause
also was found to believe that they
participated in discussion of a
measure which inured to the
special private gain or loss of their
employer or parent organization or
subsidiary of their employer,
without first disclosing their
interest as required by law.
However, because they each
obtained the advice of counsel
prior to the vote and they are no
longer serving on the board, the
commissioner will take no further
action on these complaints," the
commission said.
"The commission dismissed
these two cases because there was
no intent on the part of either
individual to violate ethics rules,
and they had sought and obtained
legal advice .prior to their votes
indicating no conflict existed," said

some, but outstanding for others
over the past week as evidenced by
the following reports.
Jesse and Wilson Paulk fished a
couple of hours on Aug. 17 to
land-one keeper trout and one 19
inch trout.
Wayne Saylor and Teddy
Fletcher of Sycamore, Ga., had 10
trout from 9-10 feet of water on
Sunday fishing with live pinfish
under Cajuns and Berkley Gulp in
the New Penny color bounced on
the bottom.
Keith and Mary Anderson of
Valdosta, Ga., fished with Josh
and Holly Maul of Richmond
Hill, Ga., and brought in four
trout with one over 20 and one 19
inches long while fishing in 7.5
feet of water with 3-inch New
Penny Gulp shrimp.
Cal Beanblossom took Scott
and Davis Jones, all of Sylvester,
Ga., out along with Randy Davis

back 20 trout and four reds

'Dogs 4 short for
Newberry game
The Taylor County High football team will be short four starters
tonight due to medical reasons for their fall jamboree game at Newberry.
"It just didn't make sense to try to play them in a game that doesn't
count towards our record. I want them all ready for next week's game
against Wakulla," Bulldog Head Coach Price Harris said.
The coach said he will bring up several players from the junior varsity
team to help fill in the gaps.
"It will give those kids a chance to get some varisty experience plus
rest bur playersthat need to get well," he said.
Kickoff for tonight's game in Newberry is set for 7:30 p.m.
No CWD deer in Florida
After extensive testing, the
Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC)
has not found any evidence of
chronic wasting disease (CWD) in
the state's white-tailed deer
population.
The FWC tested 636 free-
ranging deer during the past year
and more than 3,000 deer during
the past five years, with no CWD-
positive results.
FWC's wildlife veterinarian Dr.
Mark Cunningham said, "While
we can never say that Florida is
entirely free of the disease without
testing every deer, this sample size
gives us very high confidence that
if CWD is present in Florida, it is

The Board of County Commissioners of Taylor County, Florida, proposes to consider a
Stipulated Settlement Agreement to change the use of land within the area-shown on the map
below; by amending the text of the Taylor County Comprehensive Plan, hereinafter referred

Ina ,Lee BOwden passed away in Orange Park Memorial Hospital
on 8/13/07 due to a series of long illnesses, she was 84 years old.
Nina was proceeded by her husband
.Leroy M. Bowden, Sr. and son Van Tyrone
Bowden. The Bowden family owned and
operated a number of businesses in Perry
over the past years, ,a restaurant, grocery
store, gas stations, and a fishing camp,
the last was Bowden's 98 Grocery and Gas
station on SR 98. Since the death of her only
son, Van Bowden, Nina has been in Nursing
Homes due to strokes, she was in Orange
Park, Florida where she could be close to two
sisters living in Jacksonville at the time of
her death.
Nina left behind four sisters and three
brothers; Elmina Welch, Gloria Matle, Bea Both gone, butnever farfromourheas. KissMomma
Parker, Faye Fain, Mike Parker, Jimmy when she gets in Heaven. It's true, if tears made a

This month, the Optimist Club
of Perry donated $400 to the
Steinhatchee Boys & Girls Club to
purchase'supplies and materials for
participants.
"The money was used to
purchase games, supplies, and a
10-foot water slide for the kids,"
Executive Director Kevin Kidd
said.
Richard Feagle, who delivered
the donation said, "We (Optimists)
just wanted to do something for the
kids in Steinhatchee."
"I was so happy when the
Optimist Club wanted to do
something for Steinhatchee that I
went out the same day and
purchased things that kids had
asked for over the summer like,
footballs, board games, Frisbees
and, of course, a giant water slide,"
Kidd said.
He also added that grant funding
for human services will begin to
shrink in the coming two to three
years.
"As state and local governments
begin to shrink their budgets,
human service agencies in our
community will depend on the
community to provide service for
those in need. Many times the ones
to get hurt are children in extreme
rural settings like Steinhatchee.
When local individuals and
organizations go out of their way
to look out for these communities,
I think the entire community
should applaud them," Kidd said.

Thoughtful 'Ultimate Gift'
gets 2nd chance. on DVD
One of the best things about a DVD release is that it
give you a second chance to catch a movie you may have
missed during its theatrical run. When a movie is given
a small release, it is easy to miss a good movie amidst
the plethora of films thrown into theaters every week.
In the case of "The Ultimate Gift," one of the first
theatrical releases for the Fox Faith label, I knew very
little about it when it first hit theaters. I knew it was an
adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by
Jim Stovall (which I have not read) and I knew the basic

For Jason Stevens (Drew Fuller), his .grandfather's
death means one thing: money, and lots of it.
Jason, expecting a. huge windfall, meets 'with Mr.
Hamilton to settle the details. The detail, however, are
a good bit more than he was expecting.
Thanks to a vi "eo recorded before his death, Red tells
Jason that rather than a lump sum, he, left him a.series of
gifts along with directions for each. Should Jason fail at
any point along the way, he will lose it all.
As we watch Jason mull over whether to play his
grandfather's games, we- get the impression that there is
more to this than just not getting his money. Jason seems
to genuinely hate his grandfather. We don't find out why
until much later in the film.
Jason ultimately decides to' play along and travels to
Texas, where he meets Gus (Brian Dennehy), a rich
rancher and friend of his grandfather. Rather than
money, however, he finds himself being forced to wake
up before dawn and spend each day building a fence. At
first, he refuses, but after several, days he realizes he
won't receive his gift until he finishes. A month later,
however, rather than, money, he gets a plane ticket back
home and another video from his grandfather,
congratulating him on receiving the "gift of work."
From there, Jason faces a series of challenges, from
losing all of his possessions to making a friend and
surviving Thanksgiving dinner with his dysfunctional
family.
The friend he makes is Emily (Abigail Breslin) a
precocious young girl he meets in the park. She, along
with her mother Alexia (Ali Hillis), provide the catalyst
for the beginning of Jason's transformation.
Screenwriter Cheryl McKay can be given much of the
credit for the success of "The Ultimate Gift." She was
able to condense Stovall's novel into a coherent two-
hour film and keep Jason's transformation feeling
organic rather than forced, as is' the case in many films
of this type..
A good script, however, would have amounted to
nothing without the superb acting brought forth by
director Michael 0. Sajbel and the actors themselves.
Fuller, who does
not have the

do, is able to make
Jason feel real,
rather than the
stereotypical trust-
fund baby the

it appears she's overacting a bit early in the film, as more
is revealed about her character, -it fits.
As the movie follows Jason's path from gift to gift, we
learn about each character to the point we care about
each of them: from Mr. Hamilton's story about how he
was hired, to Jason's trip to South America, where he
learns the fate of his father and we learn why he hates
Red so much. Everything unfolds naturally, a credit to
the novel and the screenplay.
I think the greatest achievement of "The Ultimate
Gift" was how much I cared about everyone in the filnmi
Jason, Emily and her mother, and even Red, who died
before I ever met 'him on the screen.
ft's true that this could have easily been a Sunday-
night television special, but if so I doubt it would have
received the cast, financial backing or the time it
ultimately did. Sure, films like these don't make it to
theaters very often, but that was the reason Fox Faith
and other new labels like it have been created.
Now "The Ultimate Gift" was given its second chance
Tuesday when it began its DVD release.
The Ultimate Gift is presented in widescreen with
English 5.1 Dolby Surround and English and Spanish
subtitles. Bonus features include a behind-the-scenes
featu rette with cast/crew'interviews and trailers.
The movie is rated PG for thematic elements, some
violence and language.
It's been hard lately to find a good "family" film that
the entire family can enjoy. Maybe that's this movie's
ultimate gift.

"This is a great time for teams to
register and for everyone to learn
more about Relay for Life," Event
Chair Jessica Turnmire said.

Steinhatchee team learns
about Waterfronts Florida

Waterfronts Florida Orientation
was held Aug. 20-21 for the three
newest coastal communities
(Steinhatchee, Carrabelle, St.
Marks) awarded the Waterfronts
Florida Designation and the grant
funding for the 07/08 funding
cycle.
Florida Department of
Community Affairs (DCA)'
employees Jennifer Carver and
Shawna Beji led the training at the
Wildwood Inn in Crawfordville.
Representatives from
Steinhatchee, Carrabelle and St.
Marks met to discuss the
Waterfronts Florida Partnership
and to learn how to motivate local
citizens to get involved in their
community.
Attending were members of the
Taylor County Grants Department
and four members of the
Steinhatchee community.
The day's discussion revolved
around how the community should
use the Waterfronts Partnership's
assistance to develop each
community's vision and
incorporate it into the local overall
comprehensive plan of the county
and how to move forward on such
issues as water access,
revitalization of business districts
and available grant funding for
coastal areas.
Attendees spent time on learning
the basics of visioning. They were
taught how to identify all the
stakeholders in a community from
the children to local business
owners. Through collaborative
learning, the Steinhatchee team
hopes to bring structure to the
process of local visioning, so the
community can benefit' from
various programs and grants that
are available to help revitalize their
waterfronts.
Time was also dedicated to the
requirements of the grant funding.:
Quarterly reports and tracking
volunteer hours, as well as private
and public funding will : be
necessary for compliance with-.th:
program.
