Buckeye
earnings
top $30
million
Buckeye Technologies Inc.
announced Wednesday that it
earned $30.1 million after tax
($.79 per share) during the 2007
fiscal year.
This compares to fiscal year
2006 earnings of $2.0 million after
tax ($.05 per share).
Buckeye earned $15.9 million
after tax ($.41 per share) in the
quarter ended June 30. The
company's results included a $2.0
million pre-tax benefit from a
water conservation partnership
payment, a $2.1 million pre-tax
benefit from reversal of accrued
interest related to cancellation of a
contingent note owed to Stac-Pac
Technologies Inc. and a $3.3
million tax benefit from
adjustments relating to federal and
state valuation allowances and
credits.
During the same quarter of the
.prior year the company earned
$1.2 million after tax ($.03 per
share) which included a $0.8
million tax benefit ($,02 per share)
related to a reduction in Canadian
federal and provincial tax rates
and restructuring and impairment,
expenses of $0.5 million after tax
($.01 per share) primarily
associated with equipment sales at
the closed operations in
Lumberton, N.C., and
Glueckstadt, Germany.

Alleged dealer faces federal charges
A nearly seven-year
investigation by the Taylor County
Sheriffs Office has ended with the
arrest of a Sebring man on federal
drug charges.
Joseph "P psi Joe" Armstrong
was taken into custody July 16 by
Florida Department of. Law
Enforcement (FDLE) Special
Agent Chuck Osgood along with
Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
Special Agent Greg Millard and

Thanks to the cooperation
between Taylor, Wakulla and
Dixie counties, a pew artificial
reef has been deployed off the
Taylor County coast.
According to Taylor County
Extension Officer Clay Olson,
the new reef was deployed, in
the Steinhatchee Fisheries
Management Area in about 35 feet
of water.
Taylor, Wakulla and Dixie
counties each received $25,000
in funding from the Florida Fish
and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC). The counties
pooled those, funds together to
develop the new reef.
During dives last month, Reef
Inn oations,'the firm hired by the
county, deployed four 16-cube
patch reefs about 12 miles off the
coast. The cubes, called Lindberg
cubes after University of Florida
Professor Dr. William J. Lindberg,
who developed them, weigh
approximately 2,100 pounds each
and are about three feet square.
In heavily populated counties,
many local governments have
begun using concrete debris to
construct artificial reefs, cutting
down on landfills, he added.
"It's proved to be an economic
benefit," Olson said, with studies
showing that every $1 spent on

Armstrong, described as an
"upper-mid level" dealer, was
charged with conspiracy to
distribute more than five
kilograms of cocaine during a
nine-year period from 1997 to
2006.
He faces a sentence of
20-years-to-life in prison,
with enhancement from his
previous drug convictions.
Taylor County Sheriff L.E.
"Bummy" Williams credited
deputies Mark Hershberger and
Rusty Davis for their "hard work
and determination in seeing this
case through."
Local authorities first received
information regarding Armstrong's
suspected illegal activities here
back in 2000.
"About a year and a half ago, we
asked the FDLE and DEA for
assistance with the investigation.
We want to thank the Steinhatchee
residents who were bold
enough to came forward and
, help with our investigation--
without them, this (arrest) would
not have happened," Hershberger
said.
"I certainly appreciate the
citizens who had the confidence in
Mark to come to him and share
information. Input from citizens is
an invaluable weapon in our on-
going war on drugs," Williams
said.
According to officials,
Armstrong had been a frequent
visitor to Steinhatchee for more
than a decade.
Also assisting with the
investigation were Dixie County
Sheriff Dewey Hatcher and Inv.
Michael Brannin.

Cases, calls keep PPD moving
For the first time in more
than a decade, the Perry Police
* Department has an almost fully-
staffed officers pool.
"Our last officer candidate is due
to take his state, test in the very
near future," Chief Vern Clark
said.
A switch to 12-hour shifts and an
increase in the base salary were
two chief recruitment enticements,
he noted.
With one sergeant and three
officers assigned to each shift,
the department is fielding an
average of more than 1,000 calls a
month.
According to figures released
this week, city police have seen a
10 percent increase in cases per
month in 2007 compared to
the number of calls handled in
2006.
"Last March,.we had 980 calls in
which paperwork was initiated. In
March of this year, that number
was 1,081,". Captain Jamie Cruse
said.
The upward trend continued in
April ('07) with a total of 1,071
calls compared to 849 calls 'in
2006. May numbers held-steady at
1,013 calls, the exact same figure
as in 2006.
A slight upswing was seen in
June with 1,055 calls and July
promised to top that with a
reported 686 calls by mid-month.
"We had 158 automobile crashes
in the city during the seven-month
period from January to July in
2006; there were 192 crashes
during that same calendar period
this year," Cruse said.
All total, the department
oversaw 6,192 complaints from
January through July 2006; in
2007, that total was 6,638.
New board to oversee

The Taylor County Commission
will, hold a special meeting
Tuesday, Aug. 14, to discuss an
interlocal agreement creating a
government utility authority
(GUA) over sewer and water
services in Steinhatchee and Jena.
Commissioners have been
working with the Steinhatchee
Water Association (SWA) as well
as fellow commissioners in Dixie
County for almost 18 months in an
attempt create such an authority.
The two commissions assisted
SWA in receiving state funding for
expansions to the organization's
fledgling sewer system.
Talks between the Taylor and
Dixie commissions about a sewer
project to serve both Steinhatchee
and Jena began at a joint meeting
in February 2006. At that meeting,
Frank Darabi with the
environmental consultants group,
Darabi and Associates, presented a
feasibility study funded by the
Suwannee River Water
Management District for a
proposed centralized wastewater
system for Steinhatchee and Jena.
He suggested that a GUA be
formed using SWA's resources to
serve both sides of the river.

June, the project cost of Phase 1 Of
the proposed facilities is estimated
at $1.6 million.
Phase 1 includes the
construction of a backbone system
consisting of pump stations along
with 6-inch and 8-inch force
mains. Later phases will include
an upgrade and expansion to
the 3teinhatchee Wastewater
Treatment Plant to accommodate
the projected flow along with
additional gravity sewer systems
to phase out septic tanks, the
facility plan states.
Part A of the backbone system
would initially serve the following
developments in Steinhatchee:
Woods Gulf Breeze, 16 units;
Steinhatchee Shores, 24 units;
West Wind Marina, 12 units; Rivderf
Walk, 4 units; Smugglers Towit:
Homes, 10 units; and Tarpon
Ridge, 12 units.
Part B of the system would serve
River Gate at Jena, 85 units, and
River Shores, 70 units, in Jena.

Railroad enthusiasts will no doubt recognize the South Georgia Railroad engine
number 101, built in July 1910. The South Georgia Railway Company was founded
by brothers James and Zenas Oglesby of Heartpine, Ga. In 1915, the -brothers
purchased Hampton Springs in Taylor County and built a large hotel--complete with
a pool, spa, bottling works, golf course and recreation hall. In its heyday, the hotel
,was served by six trains a day on the South Georgia and four trains a day on the Live
Oak Perry & Gulf. A visit to Hampton Springs will bring the railroad glory days to

that in the dry season the intersection, which here appears to have been recently graded,

The prospective groom is a 2005 graduate of the University of Florida
with a Bachelor's degree in political science. He is currently employed
with State Farm Insurance in Perry.

Fred W. Fletcher, and Mr. and Mrs. John L. Valentine of Cross City.
The couple will be married on March 8, 2008, at 6 p.m. in the First

Trout, redfish being
caught in deep water

One More Cast Guide Service
The tides were miserable for
trout this past week, so I stayed
off the water.
Most folks who did anything,
caught a few trout early, later in
the week, from 4 6 feet of watet;
then had to move offshore to the
outside edges of the grass to catch
anything which kept.
Live pinfish under Cajun
Thunders are taking most of the
keeper trout; while the Berkley
Gulp anglers are killing a lot of
short trout trying to force them to
suddenly grow up (fast).
If you are going to throw
plastic/Gulp go deep and bounce
8-10 feet with a 3/8 oz. Assassin
jighead for best results. I find my
best luck with a Candy Corn
colored Sea Shad or five-inch Shad
Assassin from Assassin.
Look for schools of Pogies or
Pilchards on the outer edges of the
grass and fish those breaks.
Reds are tougher and seem to all
be in 3 4 feet of water as of late.

spawn offshore from December to

Scientists suspect that a big
challenge in the life of gag is the
long move from the sheltered
nursery of inshore waters to the
offshore spawning grounds, Olsen
said.
The Lindberg cubes, which have
a large whole through the middle,
and the resulting aquatic plant life
that develops around them, give
the grouper additional protections
as they grow.
"A small percentage increase in
the number of juveniles that
survive has a dramatic increase in
the grouper populations," Olson
said.

Hazel Lee Brown, 53, of Perry,
died Aug. 1, 2007, at Capital
Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Perry.

Tim Brown of Tallahassee; three
brothers, Perry City Council
member Sylvester Harris, Mike
of the Steinhatchee Fisheries
Management Area. While fishing
is not prohibited the area, the
locations of reefs deployed
elsewhere in the management area
are not disclosed, Olson explained.
The first artificial reef deployed
off Taylor County's coast was in
1994. Since then, five additional
reefs have been developed,
including this latest one.
Olson said he wanted to thank
Lt. Bruce Cooper with FWC and
Capt. Audie Towles with the
Taylor County Sheriffs Office, for
their help, as well as their teams',
for assisting in site surveys
conducted earlier this summer.
"All of that is critical work," he
said. "We could not have done this
without them."

'The Simpsons' survive

After a summer of highly anticipated adaptations
including "Transformers" and the fifth "Harry Potter"
'film, it could be argued that none had more fans waiting
:with pent-up glee than "The Simpsons Movie."
* "The Simpsons" is the longest currently running
*sitcom on television, not to mention one of the most
:quoted shows in history, and has built up a fanbase as
strong as the Star Trek enthusiasts they often poke fun
'at.
Now only a month or so away from the start of its 19th
:season, "The Simpsons," created by Matt Groening, first
:appeared in 1987 as a series of animated shorts on the
:"The Tracey Ullman Show." Two years later, "The
SSimpsons" began its own series on Fox, and the town of
.Springfield and its citizens haven't looked back since.
For almost two decades millions of people have
followed the lives of Homer, the beer-guzzling, under-
achieving, incompetent safety director for the
Springfield Nuclear Power Plant; Marge, the hyper-
active housewife; Lisa, the environmentally friendly,
jazz-playing, grade-A student; Maggie, the baby and
attempted murderess; and of, course, Bart, the
skateboard riding delinquent.
With the sheer popularity of the show--Time named it
:the 20th century's best television series in 1999--it was
only a matter
: of time

) big screen
town of Springfield made it to the big screen.
Few people, however, would have guessed that it was
going to take this long.
After 10 or so great seasons of comedy, the show has
lost ratings and, as many fans would claim, its edge,
over the past several years.
Skeptics said the movie couldn't recapture the glory
days of old.
Were they right? Yes and no.
Like in most of the show's episodes, the plot jumps
around in the beginning, but soon enough we're onto the
main story. Lake Springfield is horribly polluted because
everyone has spent years dumping anything and
everything into it. On the brink of a environmental
disaster of untold proportions, the population is banned
from further dumping.
Of course, several dozen signs and a concrete barrier
are not going to stop a beer guzzling, under-achieving,
incompetent safety director for the Springfield Nuclear
Power Plant when he has places to go and.not enough
time to visit the landfill.
Needless to say, Homer messes up big time, incurring
the wrath of the EPA, and ultimately endangering the
lives of everyone in Springfield.
In the end, however, the actual story takes a side-seat
to the jokes. Most of the them work. People weren't
rolling in the aisles, but the laughter was steady from
beginning to end.
Many times when television shows make the jump,
the\ test the Laters by trying things the. couldn't do on
tele% vision. In fact, the w riders and producers really didn't
stretch their legs much on the %way to the big screen. I
counted about four things they could not have done. on
the show. Three of them work. about the same average
as the iokes.
With a 20-year legacy and probably several more
seasons to protect, it's not surprising that they didn't
do more. but it could have lifted the movie beyond
feeling like a long episode. ... '
And that bnngs us to perhaps the biggest
problems w ith the movie. It really did feel most
of the time that we were watching what
amounted to a 84-minute-long episode. The
story, didn't break any nevw ground with the
characters, and the idea of Homer messing up
and ha ming to save the day in the end has been
done countless times before in the show.
At least they know it, though. Minutes into
the movie. Homer, himself watching a
tele\ision-to-theater adaptation, stands up and
declares evenr,one an idiot for paying money to
watch something they could have seen at home for
free.

Scallop season brings boats and trailers
The scallops have been very
plentiful this year if you go deeper
than usual. That has been the
report of most scallopers this
season. Our highways and
byways have been inundated with
boats, trailers, trucks and vans of
all persuasions with the" same
scurried hustle and bustle of
getting boats in the canal and
scooting down the Keaton Beach,
Dekle Beach and Steinhatchee
channels.
The mission for each captain is
to find the best position to dive for
scallops. On occasion I have been
in small traffic jams waiting
behind a vessel carrying impatient
family members as they get in the
long line to await their turn for
boat launching. Oh, I wasn't upset
at my wait behind them, because I
anticipate their delight at the
schedule of events that brought
them to this spot. And, yes, I am
always envious because I am on
my way away from the scallop
frenzy, as I head to town--
seemingly to another world.
i, can smile to myself as I see the
eager delight of the small children
of ucky families, fortunate enough
.'-h at the head of the line to
,aIn their boat. I am always
.im.i.,.d as dutiful fathers expertly
back up huge trucks, .perfectly
align the back wheels of their
trailers to dispose of packed boats
ready for scalloping. With
precision, Dad will zoot back to a
parking space as Mom holds the
boat long enough for children to
scamper on. It seems to me every
one has a specific chore so that the
timed performance of launch goes
perfectly on schedule.
A young determined three-year-
old holds tight to the diving flag. It
seems that must have been in her
job description and she is taking it
seriously. Mom tries to take it
away 1rom her to attach it to the
boat. 1 see the resolve as she
clinches it tightly and shakes her
blonde head. Mom wisely gives in
and allows her to carry it defianltly
down the canal. Yes, everyone has
a job to do so the scalloping
adventure can get underway.
I lose sight of the triumphant
family and-boat as they make way
for so many others awaiting their
countdown to launch. As I gaze
out to the horizon dotted with so
many layers of boaters out around
the scallopers' skyline of Keaton /
Beach, 1 wonder which dot out
there is carrying that small, sweet
child with'the red and white dive
Hlag clutched so tightly in her small.
hands.
The scallop scurry has becomelc a
family Iradilion along our coasl
and I can't think of a better way for
families to spend good quality time
together as they dive and frolic to
gain a taste and tidbit of the scallop
season of 2007. It seems (he
scallop scurry is now waning'even
as the first month is coming to a
close. There was no traffic jam
yesterday as I drove by the Keaton
Beach marina and boat ramp. But
there is still another month of
scurry-time left. Who knows?
Maybe I will have my chance yet
to bob and dive lor the sweet
tender mussel of the gulf scallop.
If 1 get that chance you can bet I
am going to take my treasures, to
the Hotdog Stand and let Mary and
the cooks fry them up for me.

Taylor County roads have seen a sharp increase in the'
number of boat and trailers since the start of the annual, .
scallop season. It is not uncommon to see the roads near the
Keaton Beach boat ramp lined with trucks and trailers.

A 1907 gold coin with an
estimated value between $25,000
and $90,000 has been the returned
to ;the daughter of the late Tere
Claiborne.
Representatives of the state's
Urnclaimed Property program
presented the coin Thursday to
Phyllis Childers of Palm Beach
County.
"I am pleased to be able to
reunite this family with this
beautiful historical heirloom," said

Department of Financial Services
and 'the Bureau of Unclaimed
Property (Bureau).
The early twentieth century
collectible is a 1907 Saint Gaudens
Double Eagle "High-Relief" $20
gold coin. The term "High-
Relief" refers to the extreme height
that images are raised above the
background of the coin, and only
12,367 coins were made due to the
extreme difficulty of production.
One of the five most sought-after
coins in America, President
Theodore Roosevelt
commissioned sculptor Augus[us
Saint-Gaudens for the design in
1906.
The gold coin belonged to
Phyllis Childers' mother, Tere
Claibhorne, who passed away in
2000: The family searched for
years, but was unable to find the
coin, which Mrs. Claiborne had
placed in a safe deposit box on her
way to a bridge game. Phyllis
Childers called the coin the
"cornerstone of the family," as it is
believed that President Theodore
Roosevelt personally gave the coin
to Phyllis' great-great-grandfather,
Manuel Amador Guerrero, who
was the first president of Panama
from 1904 to 1908.
The Bureau of Unclaimed
Specific items up for sale

baseballs autographed
by Hank Aaron and Don
Larsen
Spanish colonial silver,
coins
a $500 bill
Property currently holds
unclaimed property accounts
valued at more than $1 billion,
mostly from dormant accounts in
financial institutions, insurance
and utility companies, securities
and trust holdings. Since the
program's inception 46 years ago,
the Bureau has successfully
reunited owners with more than $1
billion in unclaimed property.
Currently there are 405,415
Unclaimed Property accounts in
Palm Beach County totaling
$72,060,579.80. Unclaimed
property can be claimed for free at
any time by the rightful owners or
heirs by logging on to
www.fltreasurehunt.org or by
calling the Bureau at 1-88-
VALUABLE. Until claimed, the
unclaimed funds are transferred to
the state's School Trust Fund to
benefit public schools. Since the
program's inception in 1961, more
than $1.5 billion' has been
transferred to the fund.
The bureau also receives items
that have been abandoned in safe
deposit boxes for at least three
years and spends up to two years
searching for the rightful owners or
heirs.
In the past year alone, the bureau
returned a record 255,000 accounts
valued at more than $171 million.
But when owners or heirs cannot
be found, the safe deposit box
contents are auctioned. While the
proceeds from the auctioned items
are transferred to the state's Public
School Trust Fund, the money is
held in the original owner's name
and can be claimed for free at any
time.
The bureau will hold an auction
this year in Orlando on Saturday,
August 4, 2007, in the Florida
Hotel and Conference Center at the
Florida Mall. The auction will
