Doctors' Memorial Hospital
(DMH) Board of Directors
announced Thursday that it has
found a new CEO: Charles Darcy
of Victoria, Texas.
Darcy is currently the chief
operating officer for DeTar
Healthcare System, which
oversees two hospitals, as well as
administrator of the Women and
Children's Department at DeTar
North.
The board officially announced
the decision Thursday morning in
the hospital's cafe, after which
Darcy spent time shaking hands
with and listening to hospital
employees and volunteers.
"The number one priority for
Doctors' Memorial Hospital is
providing quality patient care to
the citizens of Taylor County," said
DMH Board Chairman Scott
Mixon.
"It is a team effort and Charles
Darcy is a great addition to that
team," he said. "We're moving in
the right direction."
Darcy said he will be moving to
Perry with his wife of 20 years,
Gerri, and their four children, ages
nine to'16.
He will be in Perry until
Saturday, when he returns to
Victoria. His first day at the
hospital will be Monday, Aug. 13.
Taylor County's natural
attractions helped draw him here,
Darcy said.
"My kids like to do outdoor
activities," he said, adding that
they are looking forward to
kayaking and scalloping along the
coast, as well as playing on the
Taylor County Sports Complex's
new soccer fields.

Farewell tour for TEC
Taylor Energy Center's Don
Cheatam toured several civic clubs
this week to thank members for
their support and to notify them
that TEC will be. withdrawing its
permit applications within the next
few days.
"We will continue to pursue the
land use change on our property,"
he said, but added that the project
will mostly "grind to a complete
halt."
Concerns about greenhouse gas
emissions, a recent decision by the
Public Service Commission and
statements made by Gov.
Charlie Crist may have led to last
week's decision to "suspend" work
on the plant to be located
on a 3,200-acre site east of
Buckeye.
TEC was formed more than two
years ago as a joint development to
construct an 800-megawatt coal-
fired power plant by four
community-owned electric utilities
including Florida Municipal Power
Agency, JEA, the City of
Tallahassee and Reedy .Creek
Improvement District.
Cheatam said the group does
not have a "plan B" for the
project.
"Our options are to break off
individually and install some
quick-build units," he said.
He said in talks with Gov. Crist's
staff, the state would only approve .
nuclear, natural gas-fired or
"IGCC" coal plants.
In related news, the Tallahassee
City Commission Wednesday
voted 3-2 to remain in the TEC
partnership and to pay $355,000 in
back payments.

For Herbert Parker and Jimmy
Bowden, growing up in 1960s
meant they had the vast expanse of
Taylor County and beyond to
examine the-area's rich natural and
human history.
On one such expedition, the two
childhood friends found a fossil
much larger than their usual bits of
bone and metal. Of its exact
identity, they were not sure. It was
long and narrow, and shaped like a
tusk.
::.More than 40 years later,
Bowden decided he wanted
arNers to the mystery, seeking
-out paleontologists from the state
:t6 help. The answer he received
dafes their find to more than two
jmillipn years ago.
I:t-is just the latest chapter of two
friends with a thirst for discovery.
e have been buddies since the
fTi~' grade," Bowden said of
Parker. "During our young adult
years. we went on many
:excursions, looking for
arrowheads, fossils, bottles,
driftmood and anything else that
v. would get us out in the woods and
on ihe coast line."
:-::Their drive was given focus
;when they met Dr. Wilson T.
Hehndry, longtime Perry physician
anid history buff.
"Dr. Hendry had reached a point
in his life where he wasn't able to
get out in nature and look for the
:stuff he wanted to study," Bowden
*said.
"So he called us to his home and
persuaded us to help him continue
:his quest."
: According to Bowden, Dr.
iHendry would plan their trips,
:giving them instructions on where
:to go and what to look for.
"Dr. Hendry had many thoughts
and ideas about a lot of things that
almost always turned out to be
correct," he said.
Some trips proved more
interesting than others.
' "The doctor sent us to a site to
search for old bricks, but we didn't
know why. While there, we found
some bricks, but were soon run off
: Local authors p. B-2
by several men jumping out of a
speeding truck, 'hollering and
gesturing to us. We did manage to
bring the doctor one brick.
"Several years later, a team of
archeologists worked that site for
two weeks, later announcing it was
the location of a lost Spanish
mission."
Their trips, however, were not
limited to the land. Dr. Hendry
provided the pair with powerful
magnets to drag along the bottom
of rivers to find rusted clumps of
metal.
"Any clusters of medal we
found, no matter what size, we
brought home to the doctor,"
Bowden said. "He would put them

under his x-ray and see what was
beneath the rust. In one particular
cluster of rust was the perfect
outline of an old sword handle."
Beyond human history,
however, Dr. Hendry was
extremely interested in studying
fossilized bone, Bowden said.
"He would brief us on what type
of fossils he wanted and where we
were to go."
For those excursions, the doctor

provided them %with shovels and
scrapers, as well as a Geiger
counter.
"We were instructed to run the
counter over any of the bone-like
specimens we found. especially
any which were charcoal in color,"
Bowden said.
On one of their trips, the pair
found some of the charcoal-
colored bones and when they put
the bones to the test, the counter
clicked.
"Dr. Hendry never told us what
this meant, he just separated the
charcoal-colored specimens from
the brown ones and sent us out on
more missions."
Years later, Bowden questioned
a paleontologist with the Florida
Museum of,Natural History about
the Geiger counter.
"He said it actually made sense.
He said that many of Florida's
fossils are slightly radioactive.
There are trace amounts of
uranium found in phosphate
pebbles that are common in.
Florida. The ground water
transfers uranium from the
phosphate pebbles to the bones."
In the summer of 1963, the two
young explorers were once again
in search of history.
"Herbert called out that he found
a tip of one of these bones,"
Bowden said. "We had never found
tips, only segments. I joined him
and we started scraping the
limestone away from the
specimen. The. more we scraped,
the more bone we exposed.
"Finally, we had uncovered an
object 14 inches in length and-
about one inch in diameter. This
thing was connected to more bones
and the scraping process was
taking all day. We decided to return
later and just dig out, the exposed
specimen.
"After another afternoon of hard
work, we had finally expunged the,
fossil from its limestone bed, put it
in the car and hauled it to Perry."
The next step was to identify it.

encyclopedia--we didn't have the

Wrapping loving arms around his
grieving family.
Tyler Eddy, 11, was pronounced
dead late Sunday afternoon, June
8, at Bay Medical Center in
Panama City, after his parents, and
liter Gulf County paramedics,
tried desperately to revive him
fiomti an apparent drowning while
tby. were out scalloping.
according g to Paul Beasley,
investigator with the Gulf County
sheriffs office, the Eddy family--
fther and mother Bob and Toni
Eddy, and brothers Alan and Tyler-
-iras scalloping together in St.
Jteph Bay near Black's Island
vAen it was discovered the
younger boy was in peril.
The family attempted CPR as
they rushed back to. the Eagle
Harbor boat landing at St. Joe State
Park, said Beasley:
"While en route they
encountered people on a pontoon
boat, and they went to a residence
in the 600 block of Cape San Blas
Road, and called from there,"
Beasley said.
The officer said the call came in
at 3:14 p.m. and Gulf County
paramedics tried unsuccessfully to
resuscitate the boy as they rushed
him to Panama City.
"Based on the information
provided to the sheriffs office, it
was most likely a drowning," said
Beasley. An autopsy to be
performed by Bay County Medical
Examiner Dr. Charles Siebert,
originally scheduled for Monday,
was canceled, and not rescheduled,
he said.
The investigator dispelled
rumors that a shark bite might have
been involved. "There was no
mention of a shark from any
witnesses on scene," he said.
"There were no injuries to the body
to suggest a shark attack."
He Always Gave
110 Percent
As friends worked to make sense
of the sudden tragedy, they were
clear and unanimous on a single
point--that Tyler Eddy was among
the finest young boys to coach, and
td have on your side, when it came
time to compete.
"Tyler was a really good
ballplayer but he was an even
better team player," said Stacy
Kirvin, who coached the
Apalachicola boy both in baseball
and soccer for three years. "He
never complained. He put his best
effort wherever he was. He was
like that with everything.
* "He never talked back, always
'Yes sir,' A really good kid, a good'
teammate."
After matriculating in the
Franklin County schools, Eddy had
attended the .fifth grade at Port. St.
Joe Elementary this past year, and
so played on the Port. St. Joe team,
John Arnold Development, this
past spring.
His skills at catcher, pitcher and
outfield had earned him a spot as
the youngest player on the Major
Leagues 11-12 year-olds All-Star
team, just as he had earned All-Star
spots beginning in 2004 when he
played on Eastpoint's Quality
Seafood and First Choice Builders
squads.
"He was a great kid to coach, He
loved baseball a lot," said Port St.
Joe's Sissy Worley, who shares
coaching responsibilities for the
All-Stars with Chuck Smith and
Mark Cothran. "It really shook us
up over here; that whole family
means a great deal to us."
During the regular season,
Cothran, who was joined by Bob
Eddy and Mike Powell in coaching
the boys, said he saw a remarkable
young boy with a lot of promise.
"The little joker was a wonderful
kid with a great attitude," he said.
"He played catcher, and he could
play any position. He batted in the
third spot, and he always gave 110
percent hustle.
"He never complained; he
always smiled," Cothran said. "He
was the prototype of a ballplayer;
he was just what you wanted. He
had a good year every year; he's
going to be a producer."
The All-Star team took second in
the district tournament June 23,
and was headed to the state
tourney in Okeechobee until
scheduling conflicts forced them to
cancel.
Franklin County, which finished
fourth, is headed to the tourney in
.their places, and the Dixie League
leaders in Franklin County
know just how special Tyler Eddy
was.
Bryce Ward, who coached Tyler
Eddy for one year when he played-
on the First Choice Builders'
Braves, said "he always gave 110'
percent. Always.
"You knew when he came out he
.was going to give it everything her
had," said Ward.
Tyler Eddy's skills earned him a spot as the youngest player
. on the Major League 11-12 year-olds All-Star team.

Scallops and trout
highlight this report
BY PAT MCGRIFF
One More Cast Gqide Service
Scallops and trout are pleasing
those who go out looking for
them at Keaton Beach. Everyone I
spoke to, who went scalloping,
got all they wanted in scallops,
fun and sun over the Holiday
weekend! There were plenty of
folks down, however the-crowds
were thinned, somewhat, due to
the Fourth hitting in the middle of
the week.
I took trips for Chris 'and
Starke Hudson, of Greensboro,
Ga., out Wednesday and Thursday
and we managed 12 trout
Wednesday while we had 11
Thursday. We caught all our trout
on live pinfish under Cajun
Thunders.
Friday, I had Rob Varner and Ed
Roddenbury of Columbus, Ga.,
out and we brought in 12 trout to
21 inches long and three reds to
6.5 pounds. Again live pinfish
were the ticket fished in 5-5.5 feet
of water.
Hugh Downs, Herb Mason and
Glenn Arnold of Valdosta, Ga.,
went out for a combo trip as they
caught their limit of trout and 3
Spanish on Berkley Gulp New
Penny and Pearl White shrimp in
3-5 feet of water. This trio then
got in the water, and picked up a
limit of scallops as well.
Timmy and Pam Keen of
Valdosta, Ga., also had 8 trout
with their limit of scallops fishing
July 5th. The Keens reported their
limit of scallops only took an
hour to get!
Leonard and Jen Taylor of Perry
had theirlimit of trout with one
trout over 24 inches long! They
fished in 6 8 feet of water with
cut bait and live shrimp.
Robert Roberts of Perry had his
limit of scallops up near Yates
Creek in under two hours.
No Offshore Report this week.
I guess scallops are taking
precedence over everything else.

Remember Me
Remember me when flowers bloom
Early in the spring
Remember me on sunny days
In the fun that summer brings.
Remember me in the fall
As you walk through the leaves
of gold
And in the wintertime, remember me
In the stories that are told.
But most of all remember

Fossil find kept secret 44 years
FOSSIL

Thternet in 1963--to see if I could

And for the next 44 years.
S"We know you want to ask the
question, 'Why did you guys wait
44 years before sharing what you
found?'"
Bowden said they were afraid
Someone 'would go to the site and
take away the fossils, never to
return to Taylor County.
"We were planning to return and
excavate the remainder of the
walrus. Of course, that didn't
happen and that thing is still
down there, buried in the
limestone.
"Herbert and I have reached the
point in our lives that we know we
will never complete our dig."
Out of curiosity, Bowden sought
out Dr. Ryan Wheeler, bureau chief
of the Florida Archeological
Department.
"Dr. Wheeler got right back in
touch with us and said he believed
we had exposed the rib of a
mammal. Several days later, Dr.
Richard Hulbert, vertebrate
paleontology collections manager
for the Florida Museum of Natural
History at the University of
Florida, contacted me. He
identified our find as the rib of a
dugong."
Dugongs, Bowden learned,
were relatives of the Florida
manatee, but had a tail like a
dolphin.
They became extinct in Florida
about two and one-half million
years ago, right around the time
manatees arrived.
"Finally, after all these years, our
specimen has been identified by an
expert," Bowden said. ,
"But you know, even though Dr.
Hulbert knows'his fossils, we are.
still convinced we 'could' have the,.

What do you think?"

Darcy has been in the health care
field for 20 years, beginning in the
lab, from where he worked his way
up to administration.
"I'm proud of that," he said.
As for DMH, he sees his top
priority once he begins is
physician recruitment, followed by
bringing back obstetrics and
working together with staff.
He added praise for the hospital
board.
"They were very engaged in the
recruitment process; This board is
very committed to providing the
best health care for Taylor County.-$
It's a privilege to be selected," he
said.

On behalf of our entire project team, I want to tlankith.gpeople of Taylor County for the tremendous support we've received since announcing

In our time together, we have appreciated the community's gracious hospitality and strong local leadership. We especially extend our appreciation to

'Transformers' delivers
with robots in disguise
Sin
the
.e'~ ~
"Transformexs," the cartoon and Hasbro toy line from
the 1980s, could have easily faded into pop culture
obscurity. Let's face it. For many people, it did. For
others, however, -the quirky series about robots from
space hiding among us pretending to be a Volkswagen
SBetle or a Mack truck, lived on.
SThe show, comic book series and especially the toys
have quietly built a fan-following just as loyal and
cantankerous as any for "Star Trek" or "Star Wars."
S :Some 20 years later, fans still get together at science
fiction conventions, Hasbro continues to knock out toys
and action figures, new versions of the cartoon come out
every few years and the 1984 animated film (featuring
the voice of Orson Welles in the last performance before
his death) is a cult classic.
So when it was announced that a live action movie
would be made, with Michael Bay directing, there were
mixed views from the loyalists.
I should add that as someone who grew up in the 80s,
I watched the cartoon and had more than my share of the
toys. I still know most of the words to the theme song
(but don't spread that around). People get nervous when
Hollywood .suits start messing around with their
childhood memories. And not without cause. Just check
out the trailers for the upcoming "Underdog" to see an
old cartoon turned into run-of-the-mill summer filler.
SDon't worry, I don't think they have "Underdog"
conventions or anything.
As far as "Transformers" goes, I think fans are mostly
breathing a sigh of relief. While it wasn't perfect, it
wasn't bad and kept mostly true to the mythos of the
Soiginal series. Last weekend's box office records show
"Transformers" really is more than meets the eye.
While the movie definitely has some Michael Bay
moments (the good and the bad), it is a pretty solid
action film and does an adequate job of bringing a story
of transforming robots onto the big screen in live action.
- We get a quick history of the planet Cybertron,
: dstrouyed in a war between *the&1 Autobots and'
SDecepticons. Both sides are trying to get the All Spark,
which was lost and after many years wound up on Earth.
This leads them to our planet and humanity is about to
find itself stuck in the middle of a war.
Surprisingly, the human stories .held up pretty well
through the almost
to-and-one:half '
hour film.
Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is a boy about to get
his first car. Sounds simple enough. Unfortunately for
him, however, his great grandfather led an expedition to
the North Pole and stumbled upon a frozen and
deactivated Megatron, leader of the Decepticons. To
complicate matters, his *new car happens to be
Bumblebee, an advance scout for the Autobots. All he
wanted to do was impress classmate Mikaela Banes
(Megan Fox), even though she hasn't realized they have
been in the same class since second grade.
Meanwhile, Captain Lennox (Josh Duhamel) is
stationed in Qatar when his base is attacked by a
transforming helicopter. The acting was good, especially
from LaBeouf and Fox, who have the most screen time.
Throw in the Secretary of Defense (Jon Voight), a
couple of computer techs and some more soldiers and
you've got the making of a summer blockbuster.
Wait, I'm forgetting something. Oh yeah, the robots.
First off, the special effects were phenomenal in this
film. The transformation sequences were just fun to
watch, especially with the original sounds added for
good measure. The battle sequences were visually mind
blowing. They were just the kind of scenes that fans
were dreaming -about.
My only complaint was the way the action was
filmed. Most of the shots are too close, making it hard to
determine exactly what is going on and who is fighting.
Even so, if there's one thing Michael Bay does better
than just about anyone else in the business, it's big
explosions and massive action scenes.
My biggest problem with "Transformers," however, is
the lack of characterizations of the Transformers
themselves. While we learn a lot about the humans, we
get precious little time to interact with our title
characters. The voice acting was good, giving the
Autobots at least a chance to differentiate one another.
Peter Cullen returns from the original cartoon to voice
.Optimus Prime, the big-rig leader of the Autobots.
On the Decepticon side. aside from a few subtitled
electronic warbles, you never really learn much about
them. They basically become the scorpion robot, the
helicopter robot and the fighter jet robot, etc. That's a
shame. One of the joys of watching the original show
was knowing everyone, the good guys and the bad guys
and their personalities, not to mention their names. With
the new film. it is hard to get emotionally involved with
them, aside from Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.
I can understand that finances and practicality limited
the amount of time the robots could be on screen. While
it may only cost several thousand dollars to film two
actors conversing, that same scene with 30-foot-tall CG
robots ma. run into the hundreds of thousands. Still, I
hope any sequels %kill gie us more time to get to
know% our robotic friends (and enemies).
To me. storytelling works when you have
characters you care about. That's why
franchises like "Pirates of the Caribbean"
and "Harry Ponter" films work so well. You
forge a connection between yourself and
the characters and have an investment
in their success or
defeat.
"Transformers"
provides just about
everything you can ask for
from a big summer
blockbuster. It's worth going
to see it for that alone.
There's definitely room for
improvement, but my childhood
remains intact. Hopefully the
sequel (and with the box office
numbers so far, it's almost a
guarantee that we'll see one) will
give us more on the character side.
The film is rated PG-13 for
intense sequences of sci-fi action
violence, brief sexual
1.:humor and language.
