Scott Mixon has been named
chairman of the Doctors' Memorial
Hospital Board of Directors.
Mixon, who is in his third year
on the board, replaces long-time
chairman Wayne Jones, who did
not seek an additional term during
elections held last month.
"When you have a family and
you live in a community you ere
born and raised in, healthcre is
important," Mixon said of his time
on the board-.
"It is important to volunteer and
to give back to the community. It's
about community involvement."
One of his main priorities, he
said, is for the. board "to work
together and to foster an
environment with the employees to
work as a team."
The primary goal of the hospital
is to "provide quality patient care,"
he said, adding that it includes
doctor recruitment and offering the
services the community needs.
"If we do those things, the next
two to three years will be
profitable for the hospital and the
community."
Acknowledging the current
financial struggles at the hospital,
Mixon said DMH will "have a
positive net income this year."
On the subject of doctor
recruitment, he said the hospital
has recently signed a new internal
medicine specialist, a radiologist
and an anesthesiologist, and is

Plum earns medical degree,
fulfillment of lifelong dream
By MARK VIOLA
Staff writer
It was a dream 23 years in the
making when Josef Plum accepted
his medical degree.
Plum, who graduated from
Florida State University College of
Medicine on May 26, was honored
with a reception Tuesday at
Doctors' Memorial Hospital.
The hospital provided him with
a full scholarship with the caveat
that he returns to Perry to practice
once he finishes his training.
"My mother says I've wanted to
be a doctor since I was three,"
Plum said. "My brother was very
sick. According to my mother, I
wanted to be doctor and cure him.
"I've never had a memory of
wanting to be anything else," he
added.
Plum graduated from Taylor
County High School in 1999 and
continued on his path at Florida
State University, where he
received a degree in exercise
physiology.
He spent his summers in Perry
working with Doctors' Memorial
Hospital Emergency Medical
Services (EMS).
Then it was onto medical school,
also at FSU.
"It was much more difficult and
much more time consuming than I
thought," he admitted. "I knew it
wasn't going to be easy, but I didn't
know just how hard it was going to
be."
His first two years of medical
school were spent in clinical
studies, which he said involved
daily four-hour lectures followed
by 12 more hours reading text
books. Even with the extended
hours, he still worked part-time
with EMS when he could.
For his third year, Plum became
the first student at the FSU College
of Medicine to take advantage of a
newly created "rural track" for his
clinical training.
Spending his time at Jackson
Hospital in Marianna, he worked
side by side with general medicine,
family medicine and surgical
doctors.
In rural medicine, he said, there
is not always a specialist available
locally to handle certain cases.
"You need to be able to
recognize the symptoms of
specialized cases," he said. "You
also need to learn how to treat
them because they're not always
going to be able to get to A

talking with a surgeon.
"We are continuing to recruit for
other positions," he said, including
a cardiologist and another internist.
"We are also considering
offering OB/GYN services again.
. "Recruitment is something that
is not going to stop," he said. "We
need to continue adding doctors as
the community grows."
He also stressed that the hospital
needs to keep the doctors it has.
"The doctor/patient relationship
is built over the long-term."
Mixon added that the hospital
was interviewing three candidates
this week for CEO, a position left
open when the board fired then
CEO Rick Brown in December.
Mixon, a Taylor County native,
is a senior account executive with
Fringe Benefit Management
Company in Tallahassee. He and
his wife, Lori, along with their

board, supporters
Supporters of the Perry/Taylor County Boys & Girls Club were in full
force at Tuesday's city council meeting, concerned about reported
"rumors" regarding their continued occupancy of the city-owned building
at the Duck Pond.
"I am here to address concerns about our main facility. We have heard
that the Veterans Memorial Park Committee wants to take and use our
building as a veterans museum. I began receiving calls over the weekend
that they were going to ask that you get us to vacate the facility, which is
currently serving as our main unit. I'm here tonight to reiterate to the
council what our plans as a club are. We have 125-150 kids a day at that
facility. A lot of them are the kids of veterans. Some of them have parents
who are serving overseas right now in Iraq," B&G Club Director Kevin.
Kidd said.

dollars we needed today, we could be

months.
"We have the plans, we have the --Kevin Kidd ,
contractors, but we're still working on B&G Club Director
funding. One way to speed up the
process would be for the city to
partner with the Boys & Girls Club with the community development
block grant program. Cities all over the state are using this to get new
recreational facilities. Without that help, this will be a slow process," Kidd
said.
"I think I can speak on everyone's behalf when I say that the Boys &
Girls Club's home is safe at its current location," Mayor Emily Ketring
said. "Any question of asking you to vacate the facility has never come up
to this table. Your home is safe."
"We appreciate that and now it's on public record. I think a real win-winr
for everyone would be looking at having the city apply for CDBG fund on_-
behalf of the Boys & Girls Club. I understand sewers are sexy, but man
cannot live on sewer alone," Kidd said, referring to the most recent CDBG
grants received by the city to extend wastewater lines.
'This year's application is already for .going sewer projects, but I think
we should agenda this item and look at what we could do next year,"
Ketring said.
"We have found a way to get a 10,000-square-foot building that will

am directing the Division of
Forestry to once again allow yard
waste burning by homeowners.
Locally, conditions can change in a
matter of days, so I am asking that
Floridians be very careful with all
outdoor fires."
A month ago, Bronson instructed
the Division of Forestry to halt all
yard waste burning statewide
because of the drought, increasing
numbers and severity of wildfires,
and the heightened fire danger
throughout the state. It followed a
May executive order by Florida
Gov. Charlie Crist that declared a
state of emergency due to an
ongoing drought and danger of
wildfires.
Taylor County is still facing dry
conditions, with the average
drought index Tuesday running in
the low 500s, out of a possible 800.
This is up from the 463 index right
after Barry's rainfall, but still well
below the high of 706 before the
storm.
Florida law allows residents of
single-family and duplex
dwellings to burn yard waste on
site, if the vegetative material was
generated on the premises. The
yard waste must be burned in a
non-combustible container or
in a pile no larger than eight feet in
diameter and attended at all
times.
Unless prohibited by the local
municipality or county,
homeowners living in single or

yard waste (grass clippings, brush,

etc.) on the premises in a non-
combustible container between the
hours of 9 a.m. and one hour

Shook limit reduced to 1
|The Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC)
approved changes to snook bag
Skid size limits and harvest seasons
duringg its meeting in Melbourne
Thursday.
'New ruLles reduce the snook
daily recreational bag limit from
two.fish per'person to one on
Florida's Atlantic Coast, which
means a one-fish daily limit on
'snook will apply statewide.
`Rules also change the 27-34
finches total length snook slot
limit to 28-32 inches in Atlantic
.waters and 28-33 inches in
Florida's Gulf, Everglades
National Park and Monroe County
Waters.0
In addition, the rules add the
first half of December and the
month of Februday to the Dec. 15
Jan. 31 and May August
closed harvest seasons for snook
il the Gulf, Everglades and
laonroe County. However, the
iBec. 15 Jan. 31 and June -
August closed harvest seasons -in
.Atlantic waters remain unchanged.
SThe rules also allow anglers to
carry more than one cast net
aboard a vessel while fishing for
snook.,.
"These rule changes are intended,
t6 provide additional protection for
Florida's valuable snook
populations, which are considered
to be fairly healthy on the state's
Atlantic and Gulf coasts," said
FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto.
"However, the FWC believes a
reduction in harvest is necessary to
help achieve the Commission's
management goal for snook and
sustain and ,improve the fishery for
the future."
The latest FWC snook stock
assessment concluded the
management goal of a 40-percent
spawning potential ratio for this
fishery is not being met, and
increasing fishing effort and
habitat loss are contributing to the
decline.

Harper; and Amelia Clements.
Four stepchildren: John E. Barnette, Jr., Joseph Eugene Barnette, Elizabeth
Linda. Louise Barnette, Mary June Barnette, and 13 step-grandchildren.
Although she was born in Cotton, Georgia, Elizabeth is considered a native
Floridian--having lived in Taylor County since shortly after her birth in 1925.
She married young and spent most of her life in Perry. Mrs. Barnette was
well-traveled; having visited many of the lower 48 states, Canada, Mexico,
the Panama Canal, and Japan. Mrs. Barnette will be missed by the many
friends and relatives she leaves behind. As Elizabeth Gunter, she was very
active in the community and in the family's electrical contracting business.
She had many hobbies such as oil painting, creating porcelain.dolls, and
cooking. She was an excellent seamstress. When her late husband's health
failed, she took over their rental property business and maintained its success.
She was also a successful business woman in her own right. While some
will remember her as the bookkeeper at the Texaco Bulk Plant, others will
remember her as the owner/operatQr of the Perry Bus Station. Still others
will remember her for her porcelain dolls or her handmade ladies hats, or for
the cosmetics lines she represented. And others will remember her dedication
to the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Perry Elks
Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, the Historical Society, and the First Baptist
Church. When she was unable to attend church, she enjoyed watching Dr.
Stanley's televised services. Elizabeth was an avid genealogist and source
of knowledge respected by many. She compiled written family histories of
the Luther Gunter, Jessie Durden, and Annie Bell Hood families and was
working on the John Barnette family. With her passing, goes a great wealth
of knowledge of the history of those families and of Taylor County.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Joe P. Burns
Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Glenn Baker officiating. Interment will
follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday, June
14, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

"It was also a dream for this

"These are the kinds of things
we need to celebrate," said newly
elected chairman of the DMH
Board of Directors Scott Mixon.
"We need to recognize the effort

Mixon then presented Plum with
a plaque inscribed with the doctor's

"You're a .doctor, but make sure

It may have taken 23 years, but
Plum is not complaining.
"Are you tired of being called

during the ceremony.
"Nope," Dr. Plum said.

'Ocean's 13' returns franchise to
steadier waters after first sequel
The writers of the highly successful "Pirates of the
Caribbean" movies would be quick to tell you that they
are not trying to depict real pirates in their films. Real
pirates raped and pillaged and did all manner of
dastardly deeds on the high seas. Not quite the anti-
heroes we want to cheer for.
I'm betting if you ask the writers of "Ocean's 13,"
which opened last weekend, they'd say the same thing
about their portrayal of a casino heist, because if they
wanted to show an accurate account of said endeavor,
then they failed completely.
If they were, on the other hand, trying to depict a
romanticized version of a casino heist in all its fun, over-
the-top glory, then they succeeded marvelously.
Hollywood loves to romanticize things, and I'm not
talking' about randomly adding love stories where they
don't really belong (which
they like to do as well, as
"Pearl Harbor" shows). No, lc '
I'm talking about showing an
ideal version of things and
events. For instance,
Hollywood has been
romanticizing pirates since
there was a Hollywood.
They're a type of, -
swashbuckler film, in the vein .
of "Three Musketeers" and
"Mask of Zorro," just with
more water.
Well, consider' "Ocean's 13" a swashbuckler film set
in a casino, only there are no swords.
"Ocean's 11," the remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film,
opened in 2001, giving theater-goers a new pack of
celebrity actors led by George Clooney, Brad Pitt and
Matt Damon.
While the movie was a success, its 2004 sequel, the
aptly named "Ocean's 12," apparently lost the formula of
the first and ended up a disappointment, not only to fans,
,but reportedly to the cast and crew as well.
SSo x A'born "Ocean'i. 1 3." The movie opens as the
crew gathers once again in Las Vegas to see Reuben
(Elliott Gould), who suffered a heart attack and is in a
coma. A quick flashback reveals that Reuben, despite
warnings from the others, had entered into a deal with
Willie Bank (Al Pacino) for a new casino, only to have
Bank double-cross him in the end, spawning the heart
attack.
While several of the gang want to take Bank out in
revenge, they instead decide to rob him blind when his
casino opens.
A note to viewers: this will be the last time you really
know for sure in what order anything happens. Time is a
very fluid thing in this movie. The sheer complexity
(and absurdity, of course) of their plans makes it
impossible to tell everything linearly. Instead, we see
pieces of each separate plan as they try to (as shown in
the trailer) rig just about every casino game known to
man. Did I mention they have a three-minute window to
pull it off?
Anyway, after the hospital visit, the film jumps six
months after much of the groundwork has been laid for
their plans. You'll have to watch to see the rest.
It was good to see that the screenwriters learned from
their mistakes in "12." The twists and turns, which you'll
probably miss (and you're supposed to!), actually do
happen on screen. In "12,"
Danny's crew won the day
because of events the
audience was never shown,
leaving a sour taste in my
mouth. Not so this time.
It just about goes without
saying, but the acting is top
notch. Clooney simply owns
Sthe character of Daniel
Ocean, Damon shows
Linus's growth through the
movies (and that the nose
really does play) and Pitt, even though he has less to do
in this film than the others, is just as good as always.
Pacino was a brilliant addition to the cast, and brings
the perfect mix of smarmy and couth to Bank. Ellen
Barkin as his assistant Abigail is hilarious in her scenes
with Damon. It is the genius of the script that all of
Danny's 11 get their share of screen time (the two hour
run-time didn't hurt either).
After watching "Ocean's 13," I had to ask myself
several questions. Was. it preposterous? Yes. Did it
stretch the suspension of disbelief to unheard-of levels?
'Abolutely. Didirtfly at a break-neck speed-from minute
one to the closing credits hoping everyone would be able
to keep up? Right again. Was it an incredibly fun caper
with comedy, thrills and just plain fun? Without a doubt.
As Bernie Mac's character says at one point, "All you
need to do is fill it." That's exactly what they did with
"Ocean's 13."
If you liked "Ocean's 11," you'll like this one. If you
were disappointed with "Ocean's 12," give "13" a
chance.

"Megalodon: Largest Shark that

on improving the health' of our
oceans and survival of threatened

declines are attributed to
commercial and sport overfishing.
Scientists estimate humans kill 100
million sharks, skates and rays
each year, and the life history of
most shark species makes it
difficult for populations to
rebound. For those wondering why
we need sharks, the Megalodon
exhibition asks guests to consider
the marine food web domino effect
caused by overfishing.
