Management District will likely
grant a 60-day extension to
Magnolia Bay Marina & Resort
after the agency's staff this week
recommended that its governing
board reject the project's permit
application.
Jon Dinges, the district's director
of resource management, said

which included $1.1 million after

impairment expenses associated

Glueckstadt, Germany, cotton

quarter were $193 million, 6
percent higher than $181 million

continues to be strong, and our
operations are responding to the
challenge of matching production

Who should pay?


Bracing for whatever financial blow may come
with proposed property tax changes, the City of
Perry is looking to step back from underwriting the
bulk of costs for school crossing guards.
At present, the city picks up $35,000 in salaries
for six of the seven guards on duty. The entire unit
is employed by the city, with the school board
contributing a reimbursement for one of the
positions.
"I guess the first question is--why is the city
paying for the guards?" City Manager Bob Brown
said Tuesday.
"In the past when we have talked about
approaching the school board, it is usually too late
because of their budgeting schedule and that's why
I thought I'd bring this to the council now. We did,
a survey of nearby towns comparable to our size
and found that only two of the cities pay anything

aware of and to discuss. We still don't know what
the legislature is going to do about the property tax
reform proposals, but we know we could take a hit
with our budget next year," Brown said.
"I think we all agree with the importance of

would not be adversely affected by new legislation
like the city could be," Mayor Emily Ketring said.'
"Look at the situation with the football fields.
The city was picking up all of those costs. I think
it would be-more fair to ask that the citizens of the
city pay a percent per capital and that the costs (for
the guards) be allocated countywide," Councilman
Don Cook said.
"There is no special training or certification

A firm affiliated with Foley
Timber & Land Company has
purchased Keaton Beach Marina.
Dixie County Properties, LLC,
closed on the purchase earlier this
month, according to Foley's Senior
Vice President Bo Taff.
"The company bought it as an
investment, realizing the limited
access the public has to our
wonderful Nature Coast," Taff
said.
Taff said the company has
leased the marina, motel,
campground and dry storage area
to D&J Enterprises.
D&J's Jerry Cawthon said he
,plans to continue operating it as
usual, with a few changes.
"We are going to gear it more
toward the fishermen and their
needs. We plan to increase our
inventory of fishing and boating
supplies," Cawthon said.
The purchase involves nearly
three acres of canal-front property
plus a small home behind the
marina formerly owned by Bill
Rutherford.
Former marina owner Travis
Beach, who purchased it in 1992,
said he was pleased that it will
continue to be operated as a
marina.
"Jerry Cawthon worked for me
for several years and we're just
real proud he will continue to
operate it. We wish Jerry all the
best," Beach said.
In addition to the marina, Foley
owns some 500,000 acres of
timberland in Taylor and
surrounding counties.


TCHS leads district in writing scores


The State of Florida released the
2007 Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test (FCAT) scores for
the writing section, and Taylor-
County High School (TCHS) lead-
the district with 80 percent of 10th
graders scoring at or above 3.5,
which is considered a "passing"
grade.
Florida Writes is the statewide
accountability assessment for
writing in the state and is given to
fourth, eighth and 10th grade
students. The highest possible
score is a 6.0.
TCHS students had an overall
average score of 3.9, an
improvement from last year.
According to the report, 80% of
10th students at TCHS scored at or
above 3.5. Last year that number
was 71 percent.

finalizing appointments to the
Taylor County Shared Vision 2060
Task Force, which will guide
citizens through the community-
based vision process for Taylor
County.

scheduled to meet with chamber
officials as well as representatives
from "the Orlando-based planning
firm, MSCW, during a luncheon
today at the chamber, according to'

appointed by the Chamber to lead
the Vision 2060 Task Force is still
being finalized and is expected to
be announced next week.
The task force has scheduled an
open community public meeting
on Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m.
at the Taylor County Middle

community meeting is for anyone
interested in serving on one of the
four main committees that will


help shape the Taylor County 2060
Shared Vision Plan, Portwood said.
Through a series of public
committee meetings, the task force
will obtain community input and
use it to shape a vision plan to be
submitted to local government
officials for use in long-term
planning decisions.
Task force and committee
meetings will be held
approximately once per month,
with the final shared vision plan
scheduled to be adopted in the first
quarter of 2008.

County has been declared a rural
area of critical economic
concern did not impact the permit
denial.
He also said the state's
ownership of most of the Taylor
County coast as well as the
district's ownership of much of the
riverfront property on the Aucilla,
Econfina and Steinhatchee rivers
was not considered.
"There are mitigation provisions
in the law so they could possibly
enter into some sort of agreement
with the agencies," he said.
Olson said he and his staff will
press forward with the project.
"Our engineers are reviewing the
water district's comments and we
plan to meet with members of their
staff in the near future," he said.
The $700 million Magnolia Bay \


Marina & Resort, to be located just
east of Dekle Beach, is the first
phase of the 3,870-acre
development property owner Dr. J.
Crayton Pruitt is planning.
Phase one includes the
construction of a 25-acre marina
basin just east of Dekle Beach and
a two-mile channel into the gulf.


Surrounding the basin will be
condominiums, hotels, shops and a
marina designed for 300 wet clips
and dry storage for 500 more
boats.


A two-mile-long, four-laned
boulevard will access the marina
area from Dekle Beach Road.
While the condominiums will be
privately owned, many of the areas
in the marina complex will be open
to the public.
A multi-laned public boat
ramping facility will be located on
the north side of the basin and will
be donated to the county. It is
designed to handle more than 300
boats per day and will have
parking for 400 vehicles and
trailers.
Pruitt also plans to donate four
acres for additional parking near
the public boat launch at Keaton
Beach. Another 40-acre parcel is
being set aside for other public
buildings.
A marine lab and aquarium will
be open for the public.

"I think it's reasonable to ask
that we all pay a reasonable share
and I'm willing to call my school
board representative and talk about

go to the county commission
for the same reason--everyone

service, but one that should be paid
by all residents instead of just a

noon in Glorious Rain Church of God of Prophecy. The

sing this Saturday, April 28, at
Northside Church of God on
Highway 19 North.
Dinners of chicken and rice,
green beans, corn and dessert will
be served, beginning at 6 p.m. with
the sing following at 7. A love
offering will be collected to benefit
Annabelle Edwards, a ninth grader
at Taylor County High School,
who has been accepted into the
People to People Student
Ambassador Program which will
be traveling to Europe this
summer.


Maternal grandparents are Devone and Teresa Sadler, and the late
Wendy Sadler. The baby's maternal great grandparents are Gladys Sadler
and the late Ralph Sadler. Paternal grandparents are Sharon Anderson and
the late Johnny Anderson.
Kalica Jasmine was welcomed home by a brother, Jeremy.

1956 under Dwight D.
Eisenhower's administration to
promote international
understanding while building
leadership skills among America's
youth.
The 20-day experience will
include meetings with government
officials, interaction with other
students, educational activities and
home stays with other families.

Brown to graduate Sunday
Samone M. Brown will graduate cum laude from Florida A&M
University on Sunday, April 29, with a Bachelor of Science degree in
social work and a minor in health science.
Commencement services begin at 2 p.m. in the Leon County Civic
Center.
Brown is the daughter of Frankie and Jerry Cook. Her maternal
grandparents are Mary E. Jones and Maedelle Jackson, and her paternal
grandmother is Queen Ester Cook.
Brown is the mother of Samari and Shamir Franklin. She will begin
studies for a master's degree in social work in August, also af Florida
A&M University.

Don Hanson
Don Hanson, 84, a longtime
resident of Perry, died April 24,
2007, in Perry.
He was a native of Chicago, Ill.,
and a master welder. He was a
U.S. Marine veteran, having
served during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 49
years, Betty Sadler Hanson of
Perry.
Memorial services will be held
on Tuesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at
Perry First Church of God.
Joe P. Burns Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

Howdeshell
Michael Lawrence Howdeshell,
56, of Perry, died April 25, 2007.
Mr.: Howdeshell was a native of
Minneapolis, Minn., living in
Clearwater before moving to Perry
where he had resided for the past
25 years.
He was the son of Donna Mae
(Johnson) Howdeshell and the late'
Lawrence Michael Howdeshell.
He served in the U.S. Army. He
was a plumber for the family
business and a member for the
Seventh Day Adventist Church in
Perry.
Survivors include: his mother,
Donna Mae Howdeshell of
Clearwater; his wife of eight years,
Mary L. Howdeshell of Perry; one
daughter, Marlena Howdeshell of


Clearwater; two brothers, Bill
Howdeshell and Pete Howdeshell,
both of Clearwater; two sisters,
Julie Lynch of Lake City and Mary
Jo Erickson of Clearwater; two
grandchildren; two step-sons: and
two step-daughters.
Funeral services will be held on
Sunday, April 29, at 2 p.m. at
Seventh Day Adventist Church in
Perry. Interment will follow at
Carlton Cemetery.

friends on Saturday, April 28, from
5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Beggs Funeral

Doris Lee Cannon
Doris Lee Cannon, 71, died
April 25, 2007, at her residence in
Perry.
She was a native of Plant City
and had lived in Perry since 1949.
Mrs. Cannon was a member of
Charity Baptist Church and had
worked as a hairdresser for several
years at Doris' Place.
She was preceded in death by
her husband of 45 years,
Richmond "R.C." Cannon.
Survivors include: one son,
Richmond Gary Cannon of Perry;
one daughter, Rebecca "Becky"
Jean Cruce of Perry; nine
grandchildren; 13 great
grandchildren; and a host of nieces
and nephews.

Brannen
Joseph Edward Brannen, 68,

He was a native and lifelong
resident of Taylor County and a
retired electronics technician. Mr.
Brannen was a veteran of the
Vietnam War serving in the U.S.
Air Force. He was also a member
of the American Legion, AMVETS
and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include: his longtime
companion, Myrtie Walker of
Perry; two sisters, Anna Odom and
Willia Benton. both of Perry; and a
host of nieces of nephews.
Funeral Services were held
Thursday, April 26, at 3 p.m. at Joe
P. Burns Funeral Home with the
Rev. Chuck Carlton officiating.
Interment will follow at Carlton
Cemetary.

friends Wednesday, April 25, from
6-8 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home,
which was in charge of the
arrangements.
Melvin K. Thomas
Melvin K. "Mel" Thomas, 81, of

Gosh the fishing was great last
Thursday and Friday, as trout
which hadn't been able to eat, or
even look for something to eat,
just gobbled it up for my charters
on those two days!
Spanish are coming back in and
I saw one couple with thirteen
mackerel Saturday. The water has
warmed back up to almost 70
degrees after another crash back
below 60 earlier in the week.
Look for more reds to come back
out of the creeks, and back on to
the flats, now that the silt of last
week's blow has subsided. I fished
three days without seeing three
fish break the surface, and then
Sunday saw five or six fish
feeding in less than one hour. So
that should be the trend. -
Look for plugging to pick back
up as the water temps should
come back to near normal (around
70-73degrees) by this weekend.
Bill Torrey of St. Simons, Ga,,
and Monty Lewis of Thomasville,
Ga., fished with me on Thursday
and had fifteen trout with three
over 20 inches. They fished with
live pinfish under Cajun Thunders,
while I threw .an Assassin eel
(Opening Night and Candy Corn)
on a 42 inch leader under my
Cajun. We fished 5.5 6 feet of
water to land our limit. The first
four pinfish to hit the water were
swapped for 17-19 inch trout!
Then Friday, I took half of a
Superior Ink group out, while
Edward Thomas, TGIF charters,
took the other half. I had Tony
Taylor (Superior Ink) Leslie
.Retherford (plant manager Boyd
Bros. P.C. FL.) and John Fields
(press room Manager @Tucker-
Castleberry) and we slayed the
fish.
We had 20 trout and two
Spanish, -with four of the trout
over 20 inches long, with one 24
inches, our largetrff All our trout
were 17-19 inches! We caught all
our fish in 6.5 5.5 feet of water
in the 15-20 knot w-i-n-d-s Friday!
Edward also had a limit of 20


trout and three Spanish while
fishing Berkley Gulp shrimp under
Cajuns in 4 5 feet. of water for
Butch Thomas (Sr. Mgr. of Prod.
Communicorp) and Tommy
Baggett (VP Tucker-Castleberry),
and Scott Baggett (VP
Prod.Tucker Castelberry).
Wiley Hencely and Chester Lee
of Macon, Ga., had limits of
trout Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday of last week -while
fishing with Berkley Gulp shrimp
in New Penny. Wiley said they
stayed in 3-4 feet of water each
day. This pair had two over 20
inches each day as well.
Frank, Morrello and William
Wegner had their limit, two days,
Wednesday and Thursday of last
week, while they fished Monday
and Tuesday and had three or four
fish each day. Frank fished with
Berkley Gulp shrimp each day in
6-8 feet of water.
On Saturday, David, Peng, and
Calvin picked up 5 keeper trout,
numerous shorts, around a half
dozen blues and a couple of short
cobia. The trout seemed to be
pretty scattered, most were caught
in 4-5 feet of water on an
assortment of diving plugs, Salt
Water Assassins and pinfish.
Jack Turner and his buddy from
Warner Robins, Ga., had their
limit of trout with one over 24
inches long Friday, while fishing
with Assassin's Goldfish five inch
shads fished weedless in 2 2.5
feet of water; Jack also had two
flounder which hit the "goldfish"
baits. This pair had a limit again
Saturday, with two Spanish and
one nice 18 inch flounder, and
landed half on the Goldfish five
inch Assassins and half on
Assassin's Limetreuse sea shads
and five inch shads under a Cajun
in 4-5 feet of water.
James, Jamey and Jimmy
Watson had 12 trout a few blues
and a Spanish fishing in 5 -6 feet
of water Saturday.
I have no offshore report as I
doubt anyone wanted any of that
w-i-n-d this past week?

Bulldogs fall to Florida

High in opening round


Madison County and Florida
High were slated to battle for the
district baseball title here Thursday
while host Taylor County will
watch from the bleachers.
The Bulldogs dropped their
opening round contest Tuesday 7-4
to Florida High. Madison won the
other first-round game 12-2 over
Hamilton County.
The Bulldogs were in Tuesday's
contest for much of the game but
some costly errors proved to be
the difference.
Top hitters for the 'Dogs were
Nick Allbritton (3-4, double) and
Derek Miller (2-4).
Contributing one hit apiece
were Brandon Mock, Zach
Knowles, Josiah Anderson and
Drew Mock, who drove in two


. runs.
Brandon Mock got the start for
the Bulldogs striking out five and
walking five while giving up three
hits.
Miller came on in relief in the
fifth inning giving up one hit
while striking out two and
walking one. Allbritton entered
the game in the sixth, allowitg
just one hit while walking none.
The Bulldogs finish the 2007
season with a disappointing 6-19
record. For five seniors, it was
their last appearance in TCHS
colors.
Those seniors include Drew
Mock, Brandon Mock, Josiah
Anderson, Dusty Knight and
Gerald Walker.

Tonight brings the first "Evening in the Garden" fund-raiser to
Tallahassee, benefiting Covenant Hospice which serves Taylor and
surrounding counties.
The event will include a silent auction of flowerpots designed by local
artists and "celebrities." Heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be
available at the Tallahasee Garden Center from 6 until 8 p.m.
Coventry Farms and Oak Leaf Farms will host their annual Horse Show
and Luau Friday and Saturday, May 4-5, in Tallahssee to benefit the
Caring Tree Program of Big Bend Hospice.
Planned events include an "old-fashioned" cake-walk,. face-painting,
hula demonstrations and lessons by the Kolohe Po Hai dancers, a silent
auction, food and horseback riding games to watch.
The event will be held at Coventry Farms, located at 2244 Danshire Dr.

She is the daughter of the late
Joseph David White and Rosa Leona Boyd White. She is preceded in
death by her first husband, Joseph Floyd Bennett; and her second
husband, George David Steedley; one granddaughter and one great
grandson; three brothers, Leonard, Harry and Desso White; two infant
brothers; and two sisters, Veda Nettles and Bertha Bennett.
Survivors include her three sons, Henton Bennett (wife Betty) of
Jacksonville, FL, Wenton Bennett (wife Donna) of Jacksonville, FL,
and Joseph Merion Bennett of Cleveland, TN; two daughters, Onna
Musgrove (husband Edwin) of Millwood, and Marie Hires of Perry,
FL; 20 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 12 great great
grandchildren; three brothers, Roy White (wife Geneva), Bobby White
and Curtis White all of Manor; a sister, Margaret Mosley of Brantley
County; sister-in-law, Annie Mae White of Manor; a step-son, Mack
Steedley (wife Jan) of Waycross; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Monday, April 16, 2007, at 11 a.m. at
Camp Branch Church of God of Prophecy. Burial followed in the
church cemetery. The family received friends 5 until 9 p.m. Sunday at
Camp Branch Church of God of Prophecy.
Music Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Perry survivors include: daughter Marie (Browning) Hires; four
grandchildren, Ray Browning, and wife Mary Browning, Wendell
Browning, Brenda (Browning) Leggett and husband Dewayne Leggett,

Slaughter, Joshua Wade Coxwell, Macy Coxwell, Deanna Cooper,

Williamsport, he was the son of
George Melvin and Reba Elizabeth
(Marcus) Thomas.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, a son, William
Thomas, and a brother, William
Thomas.
He was a graduate of
Williamsport High School and.
Bucknell University. He was a
VU.S.- Navy Veteran of WWII
serving in the European Theatre
and participating in the Normandy
Invasion of Omaha Beach.
Mr. Thomas had been employed
with Armour Leather Co., Upjohn
Co. and retired from Pharmacia in
1985 as director of marketing. He
.was a former member of Pine
*Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: three
:daughters, Linda C. Schwab of
'Orlando, Toni L. McCracken of
"Baltimore, Md., and Catherine.
,Hasskarl of Boston, Mass.; a
brother, Richard G. Thomas of

Theron Harlow Abbott
Theron Harlow Abbott, 59, died
April 23, 2007, at Shands
University Hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of
Lafayette County, he was the son
of the late John Theron Abbott and
late former Flora Alice "Bourie"
Abbott. Mr. Abbott was a member
of First United Methodist of Mayo
and employed as a corrections
officer in Mayo for 22 years.
Survivors include: a step-son,
John Abbott of Mayo; a sister,
Brenda Farino of Tampa; a niece,
Sharon Brechue of Tampa; a
nephew, Craig Campbell of
Pennsylvania; and a host of aunts,
uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held
today, April 27, at 11 a.m. at Joe P.
Bums, Mayo Chapel, with Bruce
Branch officiating. Interment will
follow at Bethel Cemetery.
Family members received
friends Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at
the chapel.

Mrs. Myrtice Blanton, 91, a'
lifelong resident of Tayloi County,

Mrs. Blanton was a member of
Fellowship Primitive Baptist

Hopkins, Gosling shine



in crime thriller 'Fracture'


When everything comes together for a movie--a
polished script, experienced director, talented cast and
enthusiastic crew--a masterpiece is born.
We, however, as the drug store commercials tell us, do
not live in "Perfect." No film is perfect, but even so, for
many the good outweighs the bad. A great director can
draw something unexpected from an unproven cast. A
great script can overcome an uneven editing job..A great
actor can make reading the phone book sound
'interesting. A great special effects scene or two can help
the audience forget a wave of over-the-top acting.
In the case of "Fracture," which was released in
theaters last
weekend, actors
Anthony Hopkins
and Ryan Gosling
make the most out of
a somewhat generic
crime thriller story,
creating an engaging
and enjoyable film.
The movie pits
Assistant District
Attorney Willy
Beachum (Gosling)
against Ted
Crawford (Hopkins),
accused of attempted
murder after
shooting his wife.
As "Fracture"
opens, we meet
Jennifer and Rob,
obviously not
husband and wife,
cavorting together at
a hotel. They don't
know each other's
last names, but Rob
is ready to take the
next step in their
relationship.
Ted, however, has
other ideas and we
see him leave work
only to arrive at the
same hotel.
Anyone who has
seen the trailer
knows what happens
next. As he says in
his own words, Ted
waits until his wife comes home and then shoots her in
the head.
When the police arrive, they send in negotiator .Rob
Nunally to diffuse the situation. Yep, no coincidence in
names here.
What follows is a 90-miriute cat and mouse game
between Ted and Willy, who just accepted a position at
a prestigious law firm and only has a week left on the
job. At first the case is simply a mild distraction for
Willy, who has what he believes is an open and shut
case.
Of course things don't exactly go according to plan,
and Willy must decide to'either walk away from the case
and save his new job, or fight to make sure Ted is found
guilty.
"Fracture" is more "Law & Order" than it is a straight
thriller; there are no car chases or shoot-outs. In fact, the
most action might be Willy waiting for an elevator.
Still, thanks to Hopkins and Gosling, the movie
doesn't need it.

Nelson," breathes life in Willy, who has much more
screen time than Ted.
The age-old fight between working for the public at
low wages and jumping ship to make the big bucks
defending the rich plays out without making Willy seem
cliche. While the film looks at the choice, it avoids
becoming a "morality play" in the process.
Hopkins is definitely retreading old ground with his
role as a murderer who taunts the authorities, but he is
careful to make Ted a new character rather than just
another Hannibal Lector. There's no cannibalism here,
but Ted is just as ruthless and cold. He treats his wife's
attempted murder
as almost a private
joke between
himself and Willy.

she unsuccessfully

from slaughter.
This time around,
it's Hopkins as Ted
who tells a story
from his past. Also
spending time on a
farm, Ted is given
the task of sorting
defective eggs
from the good
ones. After several
hours, he has 300
bad eggs and no
.good ones He tells
\\'Nill-, that he found
a defect or small
fracture in every
one of them
Ih should also be
noted that Hopkins
has some of the
best lines min the
mo'ie. Although.
hie spends most of
the trial doodling
in a notebook,
when he does
finally) raise an
objection, his
choice of language was downright hilarious. Hopkins,
however, is sure to get across that Ted is not doing this
for laughs, but to prove his disdain of the system and his
belief that Willy can't touch him.
While the actors deserve much of the credit for the
enjoyability of "Fracture," director Gregory Hoblitt
("Frequency," "Fallen," "Primal Fear") needs some
praise as well. He draws out excellent performances
from his leads as well as the supporting cast. He
manages to keep the action moving at a sufficiently fast
pace to keep us interested, and creates a great deal of
tension throughout tWe movie.
"Fracture" is not perfect, but is a fun diversion and
Hopkins alone is worth the price of admission. The
ending was a bit of a surprise, but the final twist did not
quite live up to my expectations after watching the two
spar for almost two hours.
Even so, anyone who likes a good thriller, or simply a
"Law & Order" fan should give this one a try.
The movie is rated R for language and some violent
content.

The Artist Series of Tallahassee

Saxophone Quartet, which will be
visiting Tallahassee as part of the
Artist Series' 12th concert season.
A symbol of music in San
Francisco, the quartet will come to
Tallahassee to give a performance
in Opperman Music' Hall on
Sunday, May 6, at 2:30 p.m.
The San Francisco. Saxophone
Quartet was founded by David
Schrader in 1977 and has held the
same personnel since 1989. While
playing the streets of San
Francisco in 1991, the quartet was
discovered by Brown Meggs, the
president of Angel/EMI and the
man who signed the Beatles with
Capitol Records.
Since then, thd quartet has
recorded four CDs and toured
extensively through the United
States and Japan.
The Quartet plays transcriptions
of masterworks by such composers
as Bach, Handel and Mozart. In
addition to their transcriptions and
standard sax quartet literature, the
quartet has commissioned works
by contemporary composers Greg
Ballard and David Carlson.

ordained an elder in the Methodist
Episcopal Church in 1867. He was
the grandson of John Hendry of the
Island of Arran located between
Scotland and Ireland. John's son
Robert, Robert McFail's father,
came to America in 1770 with his
two brothers. He served with
Harry "Light Horse" Lee and
fought against the British Crown in
the Revolutionary War.
The Hendry Family, one of the


families of the MacNaughton Clan,
was originally from Moray County
Scotland. Legend has it that
during 12th and 13th century
conflicts, the clan lost a significant
portion of its land holdings in
Scotland with many of its
members scattering to various
locations. Many of the Hendrys, in
particular, settled on the island of
Arrhn.
Robert M. Hendry and Martha
Ann Carlton Hendry had 12
children. Each year on a rotating
basis, the descendants of one of the
12 children serve as host for the
Hendry Family Reunion.
The property where the Robert
M. Hendry Memorial Methodist
Church is located was donated by
the Hendry family for the purpose
of erecting a church. Robert M.
Hendry served the North Florida
community as a circuit rider for the
Methodist Church in addition to
his regular occupation as a farmer.
The church was established in
1872 and eventually named in his
honor.
Generations of descendants of
Robert M. and Martha Ann Carlton


Hendry have scattered to the four
winds. Several followed in his
footsteps and became ministers
and farmers. Others entered law
enforcement, politics, education,
business, military, medicine and
other occupations. The reputation
of the Hendrys was that of hard
working, God-fearing and honest,
law-abiding citizens. It remains so
today.
We believe this year marks the
140th year of Hendry Family
Reunion. The speaker will be Ms.
Polly Lassiter Cook, from Lake
Wales. In the late 1950's, Polly
served the Shady Grove Methodist
Charge (Shady Grove, Lake Bird
and Boyd Methodist churches) as a
church social worker and
Methodist youth 'fellowship
coordinator.. Also visiting with us
will be our district superintendent,
Pastor Tony Fernandez and his
wife, Maria.
All friends and" family are
invited to join-us at the Robert M.
Hendry Memorial Church in
Shady Grove, Sunday, May 6, for
the 11 a.m. service. Dinner on. the
grounds will follow the program.

BOARD CONSIDERS BUILDING
NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL
The school board took the first
tentative steps toward building a
new primary school to replace the
facilities then occupied by first and
second grade children.
The board's action came after it
received a petition signed by
teachers at the school reminding
board members that ,a building
survey in February 1971 indicated
that the primary facility "did not
meet minimum standards and
should not be used for any pupils."

Reunions abound in our lives and have the
unique ability to make .you ask the question,
"Where did the years go?" My elder relatives are
gone now and I have become the ."older
:generation" of the family and I still have not
found the answer to the question. But, I continue
'.to enjoy the traditional reunion even if it does'
point to the fact that I am indeed growing older
every year.
Our family held annual reunions for the Taylor
side (Mama's family) all during my growing up
years. I remember them as a time of betmg
squashed tightly when hugged by aunts and
uncles who would declare every year, "You are
growing so fast. why I remember when you were
just a tiny baby." As I was moved along the line
and all the hugs were distributed I felt like rpy.
smile was on the verge of cracking. But, finally
came to the last adult relative and with a shout
of joy I was free to join the cousins for a day .of
fun.
These gatherings were not the small family get-
together by no means since Granddaddy Taytids:
large family of 20-plus children had followed his
example by producing a healthy number -of
offspring. The location was passed from :one
sibling to the next. It was an adventure wherever
it was held. but my favorite locations were Uncle:
Jack -and Aunt Grace. 'Uncle Jim and Aunt
Mamie, and Uncle Dewey and Aunt Margaret. Of
the- three:-no two-were-alike but.I loved them all
the same.
Aunt Grace was the oldest child and was also,
the smallest in stature, ruling the family with.a
gentle touch and a soft voice. She and Uncle
Jack lived on a small farm in Lenox, Ga., just a
few miles from her birthplace, Nashville. Talk
was that Aunt Grace came into the world on a
cold January morning weighing less than two
pounds. Babies were born at home during those.
days and neonatal care was years in the future,..
but Aunt Grace survived the cold winter and
went 6n to be a beloved music teacher with-the
public school system. She was also a superb
cook. Reunions at her house meant tables loaded
with home-grown vegetables, pies and cakes
made from fruits grown on the farm. When we
arrived early in the morning we were treated to
homemade biscuits filled with syrup that Uncle
Jack had made himself served with fresh-cured
ham, bacon or sausage. Pitchers of milk straight
from the family cow were cooled and waiting to
wash all the delicious food down. And that was
just the beginning of the day that included a
spread fit for a king at lunch time. When the day
came to. a close, the Leggett family headed back
toward Perry and the smell of the food remained
with us, thanks to the large basket of leftovers
packed snugly in the back of the car.
Aunt Mamie and Uncle Dewey were both city
dwellers, one in Panama City and the other in
Jacksonville, so their turn at the reunion
afforded me a chance to see the "city lights." The
trip to their houses was almost as exciting as the
actual reunion for me. My neck was stiff for days
afterward from gazing at the tall buildings ari
straining to see what was underneath the high
bridges as we passed over. Although the scenery
was different, the love passed around among
relatives and the food shared was entirely the
same.
I attended the 45th class reunion of my
graduating class in Mayo this past Saturday
night. It too was a time to exchange hugs and
exclaim, "Where did the years go?"
Much to my delight I am invited to the Taylor
County High School Class of 1962 reunion to be
held this Saturday at Wakulla Springs. I am
giddy with excitement to see former classmates
that I have not seen in close to 47 years, having
moved to Mayo at the age of 15. I feel sure it will
also be a time to exchange hugs and look at each
other with the eyes of memory from a time past.
Sounds pretty cool to me to be seen as a teenager
again, even if we know it's not true. But hey, this
is our 45th reunion...it only comes around once,
it's a time to be enjoyed to the fullest.

reach it. Without your support, none of this would be
possible. We appreciate the warm and generous
support of our community."
The team will represent California in the 2007 theme
of Relay Around America and thereby are "Raisin'
Money For a Cure."
"We chose California because the Red Hat Society
started in Fullerton, Calif., on April 25, 1988. Sue
Ellen Cooper is the founder and Exalted Queen Mother
of the entire Red Hat Society," reminded Lindsey. "A

As a reminder: Taylor County's Relay For Life
begins tonight (Friday, April 27) at the Taylor County
High School track. The survivors' lap is 6 p.m., the
luminaria ceremony is just after dark. The closing
ceremony is Saturday at 11 a.m.

Turn this year's annual spring
cleaning chore into a profitable
routine. Instead of fearing the mop
and dust towel, make a game out
of going through your things,
cleaning out your closet and
rearranging your furniture. From
under your sofa cushions to your
CD collection, look for lost
treasures -- or perhaps discover
new ones. With more than $10
billion in loose change sitting idle
across the U.S. you're already
sitting on hidden riches.
Consider these tips to help turn
your spring cleaning chore into a
spring cleaning treasure hunt:
1. Declutter: Don't limit your
decluttering to the usual garage,
basement and attic. Look at the
common areas, such as drawers,
cupboards and places where things
tend to go that we think we'll get to
later. Divide clutter into boxes
marked "keep," "donate," "sell"
and "throw out" -- even though
you, don't want it, someone else
might. Hold a garage sale or sell it
online, you never know, that old
comic book might complete
someone else's collection.
2. Clear out the storage unit:
Sort through old boxes you've had
in storage and determine if the
contents are worth keeping and
why they're important. If you clear
out enough, who knows, you may
not need a storage unit or the

change also ends up under the sofa
cushions, in drawers and in the

4. Sort through old photos and
refresh the family room art: The

the photos in the family room. The

money by not having to buy new
art.

missing case jackets, scratched

cassettes. Gather it all together in
one spot. Separate into stacks and

missing, you can take the CDs you
no longer listen to and sell them at

The company will give a total 6,000 low-growing trees to customers ..
.across its territory; the tree will include Walter's Viburnum

Six steps lead to successful painting


Home improvement tasks can be
intimidating, and part of your to-do'
list most likely includes painting
projects. As the weather begins to
turn warmer outside, outdoor
painting projects become key. But
don't let these tasks take up too
much of your valuable time. There
are many tips and tools for quick'
and easy painting projects with
fun surprising results.
Step 1.
Look outside and see what needs
painting. Because the rough winter
months can take their toll, look
again at items that might have been
fine last summer. Obviously the
deck is one of the main potential
painting projects in the yard, but
don't forget about things like
housing trim, shutters, the fence,
sheds, furniture, children's toys,
lattice, grills, play equipment and
even the mailbox.
Step 2
Make sure to properly prepare
the item that needs repainting. By
sanding and prepping before
painting you can ensure higher
quality results and a longer lasting
paint job. First, remove the paint.
Whether it is wood, brick, or other
materials, sand to expose the
natural material under the paint.
Many tools are available to ease
this job, Some electric tools are
easy to use and remove peeling
paint from siding and trim, as well
as concrete block, steel, and
masonry, making them handy tools
for outside.


Step 3
After prepping the project it's
time to decide on paint.
When looking at paint or stain
make sure that you find one that is
made especially for outdoors.
This type of paint will last longer
under more severe conditions and
resist blistering, cracking and
peeling.
Also look for products with
special outdoor properties such as
resistance to fading. Consider
buying a sealant or top coat for


extra protection from the elements
of Mother Nature.
Step 4
Decide on color and design. Just
because it's outside doesn't mean
that you have to stick to the
popular browns and tans, although
natural colors are usually the ones
that blend best with yard decor.
Interesting colors can add style and
personality to your yard. For

furniture will match with many of
the flowers typically found in the

You've prepped, decided on
design and bought quality outdoor

these elements together. Be sure to
read through the recommended
directions for the products you

application process works best for
you. Some prefer using a brush
while others prefer a sprayer.
Step 6
Allow proper time to dry. Some
products might require that the first
coat dry overnight before another
is applied. Proper application will
equate to a better finished product
and sometimes years more before
you have to repaint again. Once

How does your garden grow?


In the absence of April showers,
you need to be watering your
plants!
Here are some other tips to get
you through May in the garden:
If you plant trees and shrubs
now, you must water faithfully.
Because new trees and shrubs
don't have roots extending outside
the original root ball, water
directly at the root ball---or, if your
budget allows, install a micro-
irrigation system.
Spring flowers won't make the
transition into hotter weather, so
except for heat-tolerant varieties
like petunias, you're going to need
to replace them with flowers which
can endure the summer heat:
mandevilla, salvia, melampodium,
pentas, portulaca, shrimp plant,
verbena, croton, copper plant,
ornamental sweet potatoes or
zinnias for sunny areas; for shade,
consider coleus, caladiums or
impatiens.
Now is the time to fertilize
lawns. A good, all-purpose
fertilizer is recommended, such as
the 15-0-15 with 7.5 percent slow-
release nitrogen. The general rate
of application is 6 pounds per
thousand square feet.

The Perry Garden Club will host
the spring meeting for District III
of the Florida Federation of
Garden Clubs. The meeting will
be held at The Timbers in Perry on
May 11 beginning at 10 a.m. and
continuing until 2:30 p.m.
For the meeting, Bob Bell will
create floral designs which will be
first admired, and then auctioned.
Some 100 people are expected
for the event, according to Garden
Club President Liska Gooding.

Three major saltwater fishing tournaments are on tap
curing May in Taylor County.
The Perry Optimist Club Saltwater Fishing
Tournament is May 5. More than $10,000 in cash and
prizes for the largest trout, redfish, grouper, cobia and
Spanish mackerel. Boat raffle tickets are $5 each (for
the boat and other drawings).

The Reeling For Kids Celebrity Fishing Tournament
will be held May 18 and 19 in Steinhatchee. The
annual event; under riten by pro football greats Doug
)- Johnson, W.W. Gay and Donnie Young, benefits the
IBoys & Girls Clubs in both Taylor County and
Alachua County.


Entry fee is $150 for the inshore division and $200
for the offshore division. Entry fee covers your boat
and all anglers on your boat. There will be an
additional late registration fee of $25 on the day of
event. The entry deadline is May 14.

Country music legend Mel Tillis (and friends) will-
be hosting a fishing tournament Memorial Day
weekend out of GulfStream Marina in Steinhatchee.
Proceeds from the tournament, which features up to
$15,000 in cash and prizes, will benefit RiteCare and
the Shriners Hospital for Children.
The tournament will feature inshore and offshore
competitions and special "triple play" boat awards.
The, inshore triple play includes the heaviest catch of
all three species -- redfish, trout and Spanish mackerel.
The first place boat will split $2,125, second place will
get $1,275 and third place $850.
In the offshore event--for.grouper, amberjack and
kingfish--the top cash prizes will be the same.
Individual angler awards will also be given in all
categories plus awards for top lady angler and top
junior. The tourney will be held on Sunday, May 27,
beginning at safelight. All boats must be in by 4 p.m;

Soldier Beetles live up to their
name as beneficial bugs for the
garden. Their slender bodies may
identify them. They are about one-
half inch long, red or yellow with
black or brown wings. The adult
beetles destroy aphids and other
soft-bodied insects. They feed on
nectar and pollen, and are attracted
to any garden with a water source:
and flowers. They especially like
goldenrod plants.


Last year, the Perry Garden Club staged a tour of local lawns
and gardens; this year, the club will host the district meeting.
