Memorial Hospital (DMH)
building into a veterans home is
"not feasible," the Taylor County
Commission is once again mulling
over what to do with the decades-
old structure.

Two additional dogs were
diagnosed. Wednesday with
illnesses that may be linked to
tainted pet food, which according
to reports has sickened animals
across the country, leading to at
least 10 deaths.
According to veterinarian Miles
Owens, one of the dogs, a six-
month old puppy, was
experiencing serious kidne)
problems.
At first he suspected diabetes to
be the cause, but the dog's glucose
levels were normal, he said.

first animal reported to have a
potential link to the tainted food.
A massive recall was announced
last week -by Menu Foods Income
Fund, which produces cat and dog
fod'bior numerous store and name
brands. The recall includes both
can and pouch products in "cuts
and gravy" style manufactured at
two U.S. facilities.
The food in question was
produced between Dec. 3 and
March 6 and includes certain
flavors among major brands such
as Eukanuba, Science Diet and
Nutro, as well as store bands
including Winn-Dixie, Save-a-Lot
and Wal-Mart.

Brown told commissioners
Tuesday night that "the state is not
interested in putting a veterans
facility in this area.
"They are looking for new
construction rather than
renovation," he added.
The commission formed a
committee in April 2006 to look


into the possibility of converting
the former hospital into a veterans
nursing home.
At the time, the county was in
the process of preparing to sell the
,building, which has been vacant
since DMH moved to its current
location on Hwy. 19 in 2003.
A study done on the building in


2005, put the projected cost at $3.4
million for a nearly complete
removal of systems: mechanic,
electrical, plumbing and medical
gas, as well as demolition of most
of the interior and remodeling for
new business occupancy. The
inclusion of support buildings
would add an additional $677,000.

City seeks

$700,000 in

funding for

new sewer
Sewer extensions may not make
for the most lively of topics, but
for city residents not connected
to a, central system, sewer
availability continues to a long-
standing concern.
Work on new lines to the Pine
Ridge subdivision is expected to
be "installed and complete" this
year, according to City Manager
Bob Brown.
The city also hopes to secure
$700,000 in Community
Development Block Grant
(CDBG) funds for use in
extending sewer lines to residents
along Green Street and in the
Granger neighborhood (located off
Old Dixie Hwy. and Center St.):
"We are applying for the full
amount allowed by the program. If
we are successful, then we could
see preliminary work starting later
in the year," Brown said.
In order to-qualify for the grant,
the area must meet certain income
criteria, he noted.

City receives grants topping $5.8 million


The City of Perry has a solid
track record with the Community
Development Block Grant
(CDBG) program, receiving
$5.8 million for local projects


since 1981.
Working hand-in-hand with the
city to secure that money has been
the North Central Florida Regional
Planning Council.
Ldst week, Principal Planner
Martha Orthoefer gave the Perry
City Council a quick overview of
the highly-competitive program
and details of those projects
funded by CDBG dollars since
1981.
"The Federal Housing and
Community Development Act was


established in 1974. The Florida
Small Cities Community
Development Block Grant
Program was established in 1983.
The purpose of both of these
programs is to undertake
community development activities
to arrest and reverse community
decline and restore community
vitality," Orthoefer said.
"This would be done primarily
by providing decent housing and a
suitable living environment
principally for low to moderate


income persons.
"Cities with populations under
50,000 are eligible to apply. The
grants are awarded on a
competitive basis and matching
funds are not required. The CDBG
program is administered on the
national level by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban
Development and on the state level
by the Florida Department of
Community Affairs," she said.

Rate hike for school employees


Taylor County School Board
employees who have Blue
Cross/Blue Shield health insurance
will see a $25 per month hike in
their premiums.
The school board approved the
increase during its meeting held
March 13.
According to Superintendent of
Schools Oscar M. Howard Jr., the
raise was necessary due to
increasing costs of the school's
insurance program.
Currently there are 372 people,
including retirees, utilizing the


program, he said.
"We didn't want to do more
during the term," Howard said.
Usually changes to the program
are made between the school
years rather than in the middle of a
term.
The school board is self-insured,
meaning that premiums paid into
the program are used to pay
claims, he added.
"What are we looking at for next
year?" School Board Member
Danny Lundy asked.
Howard said an additional raise


in premiums or changes in the
deductibles are possible.
"It depends on the rates we can
get from Blue Cross/Blue Shield,"
he said.
School Board Member Mark
Southerland made a motion to
approve the $25 increase; Darrell
Whiddon seconded.
The measure passed
unanimously.
"It's one of those things,"
Howard said. "You hate to have to
have a raise, but in this day and
age, it's a fact of life."

Those who pass the eternal

County Courthouse will notice a
number of wreaths and flower
arrangements decorating the
location.
What they may not notice is how
they arrive there.
For the past 10 years, Betty


Duvall has been purchasing the
arrangements and placing them
around the eternal flame.
It started when she noticed a pair
of wreaths were .becoming
"shabby," as she called them.
"I called the courthouse," she
said.
Nobody could tell her who was


in charge of replacing them, so she
took charge herself.
"My son was killed in Vietnam. I
put one out for him and one for his
father. I cover all veterans."
According to Duvall, she
replaces the wreaths about four
times a year, whenever they get
"shabby."

With springtime in the air most Taylor County families
turned their attention to putting in a garden when I was a
child. It was a family affair at our house with more than .
enough tasks for everyone's hands to stay busy. Daddy
was gone from sunup till late at night so Mama took on the
job of garden supervisor. There wasn't a thing about i
gardening that Mama didn't know. She was born in the
south Georgia farmlands and had spent her growing up
years learning the trade from her family. I suppose the ,
thing that made her so efficient at farming was her inborn.,
love of the land. She could grow anything and took great'.
joy in the entire process, from the first turning of the soil
to the last crop harvested.
For our large family the garden was not a pastime'
adventure but was actually the difference between lack
and plenty. Now don't misunderstand, we were not
candidates for a soup line since Daddy was a good
provider, but the luxury of store-bought food was
considered just that...a luxury. My mouth still waters as I
recall so clearly the taste of fresh ground hamburger meat,
bologna and a loaf of bread. These items were regarded as
a feast we were only privy to on special occasions. The
hamburger was the equivalent of steak at our house, and'
was served as the main meat dish at mealtime. The
bologna was bought in a large roll and Mamasliced it asqi
needed. The taste of the meat was indescribable layered'
between two slices of soft white bread.
As good as these foods were, they pale in comparison to
the boLnty of vegetables produced in the family garden
each year. But, as most farmers know, the food doesn't
simply jump on the table. There is a long, hardworking
process needed to reap the benefits of a garden.
Our garden sat to the west of our house on Center Street.
Each year about this time Mama hired someone to break
up the ground, which was achieved with a hand plow and
mule. I took great satisfaction in watching the progress .of
the old mule as he slowly lumbered down 'the neatly plowed
rows. I took even greater satisfaction in watching the
confrontation that occurred when the mule balked at the
end of the 2poWIt was a sigh] to behold sOld Joe set out
to prove who was boss of this team.
He'd start out real calm by saying, "Mule you get a move
on. Ain't got all day to stand here waiting on you." After a
couple of times using his persuasive voice, something
appeared to crack in Joe's demeanor. His tone changed as
he said, "Now Mule, who you think is the boss of this job?"
I could hardly contain the giggles as Mule threw his head
to the side for a look at Joe while stubbornly keeping his
feet firmly planted in the same spot. That was the signal for
the show to begin. The colorful language that flowed
between man and beast was enough to set my ears on fire.
Once the sound of their verbal exchange reached Mama, I'd
have to find another spot to occupy. Mama had a real thing
about cursing, especially if it was used in the presence of
her children.
Eventually the showdown between mule and man was,
settled and the ground was laid out in perfect rows. The
next step was planting the seed. Mama didn't believe in the
haphazard sowing of precious seed, each one had to be.
carefully deposited in the little hole which had been
scooped.out by hand. She went before us showing us how
to drop the seed and cover it. The "show and tell" lessons
were just that, as she explained the miracle of dropping. the
lifeless seed into the fertile soil so that it could lay quietly
in the dark until its time of rebirth. As I listened to her I
would nearly burst with excitement from the sheer
knowledge that I was a helper in God's plan of provision.
As the cool nights gave way to sunny days with longer',
hours of sunshine, the mystery of life was revealed as each
little seed produced its own tiny plant. Before summer was,
fully upon us the garden would be a display of greens,
yellows and reds. With corn taller than me, I stood oh,
tiptoe to pluck the ripe ears. Peas, butterbeans and squash
needed to be picked every day. And my all time favorite,'
juicy red tomatoes, loaded the fragile bushes until they'
drooped to the ground. It was pure joy to sit in the dirt
between the rows with a ripe tomato in one hand and fresh
black-eyed peas in the other hand as I made a meal out of,
the delicious crop straight from the source.
It's a fact that we kids enjoyed the eating better than the
picking. So with a promise of good food on the horizon we
endured the long hour of backbreaking picking, filling and
refilling our buckets with the vegetables. Those not. picking
were on the porch shelling peas or shucking corn. We
worked, assembly-line style, all through the day. At the
end of the day Mama put the vegetables into canning jars
and into the huge pressure cooker for sealing. As summer
came to a close the shelves on the back porch were laden
down with the bounty. Jars and jars of beautiful yummy
food lined up for our enjoyment. These jars were not
opened until winter since the garden provided enough for
canning as well as daily supplies of the delicious
vegetables. It also provided training in a work ethic as I
gazed at the filled shelves and realized from an early age
that a job well done brings great satisfaction physically and
emotionally.
I haven't planted a garden in many years. Like most of
you, the convenience of the supermarket has lulled me to
sleep. I don't even have a pressure cooker nor canning jars,
but I do know that the lessons learned at the feet of Mama
gave me an appreciation for the farmer....I will never take
the abundance of food for granted.
It's for sure if I could recreate the scene between Old Joe
and Mule it would be worth the hours of picking and
canning just to hear their conversation again.

for selling the old hospital.
Brown, however, asked for time
to examine the possibility of
converting the structure to provide
additional county office space.
'According to Brown, he and
County Planning Director Danny
Griner toured the building and he
thought the county could renovate
the building without completely
gutting the interior, as was
recommended in the 2005 report.
:He cited the lack of office and
storage space at the county
courthouse as well as the annex
b.ilding.
:The county could pursue grants
for the project over several years
iii order to finance the cost, he
said.
"I-think that would be the most
prudent thing to do," Brown said.
Bethea questioned whether
renovating the old hospital would
eventually cost more than building
a hew structure.
!"I would like to give you time to
see if it can be renovated into
office space," Commissioner Pat
Patterson said.

Opry performer, Ryan Holladay,
will perform during the fifth
annual Florida State Bluegrass
Festival here Saturday, April 7.
Holladay is no stranger to these
events as he is an active
participant in Bluegrass in the
Schools programs that help
promote bluegrass music to
American youths, festival
coordinator Dawn Taylor said.
He also co-hosted, along with
Sierra Hull, the International
Bluegrass Music Association's
DVD entitled "Discover
SBludgrass" that introduces young
viewers to the American genre of
acoustic roots music.
Holladay began his career at the
age of five, first performing on
Nashville's historic Grand Ole
ppry and is credited with being
the youngest performer to grace
. that revered stage.
He's released three albums, the,
most recent, "New Kid in Town"
on Skaggs Family Records.
Holladay's appearances include
The Oprah Winfrey Show's
"World's Most Talented Kids"
episode, Nickelodeon's "Figure It
Out," and PBS's "Zooin."
Largely self-taught, his
lightning-fast fingers are equally
nimble on the banjo and mandolin,
and he plays the guitar and Dobro
as well. He currently tours with
his own band including last year's
Japan tour with country act, Trick
Pony and his second performance
at Carnegie Hall in New York.

featured a pleated band and an
apron back with apple red satin
edging. The two-tiered veil of

to the groom, for the lighting of the
unity candle.

bride's registry; wedding programs
were distributed by Kaylee

A reception followed in the
fellowship hall of the church which
repeated the bride's colors at a
number of circular tables draped
with white linen cloths. Designs of


fresh flowers and burning candles
accented the serving tables, while
guests were seated at tables
defined by rose petals and candles.
Focal points at the reception were a
framed portrait of the bride taken at
McClay Gardens and the four-
tiered wedding cake on a silver
pedestal which was accented with
bands of red satin ribbon.
Following a honeymoon cruise
to the Cayman Islands and
Cozumel, the couple resides in
Perry.
Prior to her December wedding,
Miss Brooks was honored at three
bridal showers, given by: the
women of New Home Baptist
Church, her maid of honor Heather
Speas, and family friends Linda
Murphy, Mary Ann Walker and
Dale Allbritton.

The Perry Garden Club (PGC) is proceeding with plans to host the
Spring Meeting for District III of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

Members of the PGC, along with members and officers from a number
of clubs in the area, will descend upon "The Timbers" at 10 a.m. for a
district meeting which includes both a floral design workshop and a

Yikes what a blow?
SLast Friday night saw 25-35
knot w-i-n-d-s blow. Saturday, I
took out Steve and his son, Drew
Ward of Atlanta, Ga. and they
took it on the chin with me for
four and a half hours. Then we
caught a short.... then a keeper and
finished up our six hours on the
water with four keeper trout and
one Spanish...ugh...maybe five
shorts.... "slow" doesn't quite cover
it. They fished live shrimp under
Cajuns to land what we caught.
So I canceled my charter for
Sunday...what with 20 knot
forecasts right on and 36 degree
cold weather. But I went out with
Randy Kendrick of Adel, Ga., just
to prove how miserable the
fishing would be, and seven hours
later Randy and I cried UNCLE
and headed in without a strike. We
stayed with plugs and five inch
shads'(fished weedless) and didn't
get a strike...did- I mention we
didn't get a strike?
I pulled in to one place on the
way in and we caught six keeper
reds in less than 15 minutes on
Copper Intruder Spoons and that
was all we got into? We kept only
two of course...about 20 inches.

Invitational ,Spring Break
Tournament Tuesday with a narrow
9-8 loss to Spruce Creek (Fla.).
The one-run defeat was the
second for the Bulld6gs in the
Tallahassee tourney. TCHS also
lost 2-1 to Goodpasture, Tenn.
Taylor County opened the
tournament with a 7-6 win over
McMinn Central, Tenn., before
falling 14-0 to Jacksonville-
Wolfson, which went on to place
second in the tournament.
In Tuesday's game Nick
Allbritton pitched 6 1/3 innings
for the Bulldogs allowing 8
hits, 7 runs (6 earned), 4 strike-


outs and one walk. Ethan Young
came on in relief in the bottom of
the 7th with a runner on
2nd allowing 1 hit, 2 runs (1
earned) and no walks.
The Bulldogs' bats came to life
in the final game. Leaders at the
plate were Allbritton (3-4, 1 RBI,
3 R), Kendall Thompson (2-3, 3
RBI), Josh Gilbreath (2-4 double,
2 RBI, 2R), Josiah Anderson (2-5,

Education Foundation (NBEF).

learning course is $20, payable

'Women to Women' conference this weekend


Churches plan special services next week


'Explore God's word'
Gospel preaching by Frank Himmel of Louisville, Ky., will "explore
God's word" at Spring Warrior Church of Christ March 25-30. Services are.
planned at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m: on Sunday, and at 7:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday.
The church is located five miles south of Perry, just off U.S. 19 on South
Red Padgett Road. For additional information, call 584-5176 or 584-9821.
Spring Revival begins Wednesday
The Perry First Church of God on Highway 221 North will begin its
spring revival on Wednesday, March 28, continuing services through
March 31, at 7 nightly. The Rev. Vondie Cooke II from Beckley, W. Va.,
will be the featured speaker.
The final service will be a Homecoming celebration on Sunday, April 1,
at 11 a.m., with lunch to be shared following the service.
'Women to Women' conference this weekend
The 2007 'Women to Women' Conference will begin tonight, March 23,
at 7:30 and continue Saturday at 10 a.m. featuring Prophetess Ane Wright
and Pastor Linda Banks McGowin. Registration is free; please come to.

The Men's Ministry of New Brooklyn Missionary Baptist Church will
present its annual 100 Men in Black Walking With Christ Rally on Sunday,

Morning worship for Holy Week
First United Methodist Church has announced its schedule of 6:45
worship services for Holy Week, April 2-8. Various ministers and choirs
from the community participate in this week-long observance which is
followed by breakfast. The listing of daily speakers will appear in next

Alice Irene Poitevint
Alice Irene Poitevint, 91, died
March 20, 2007, at her residence in
Perry.
A native of Madison County, she
had been a resident of Perry most
of her life. She was an active
member of Lakeside Baptist
Church.
Her husband, Cecil Poitevint,
predeceased her.
Survivors include: a son, Lamar
Poitevint of Perry; a' daughter,
Betty Hatcher of Perry; a special
friend, John Ritch Jr. of Perry; two
sisters-in-law, Louise Scott and
Catherine Scott; five
grandchildren; 11 great
grandchildren,; two great great
grandchildren; and a host of nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, March 22, at 4 p.m. at
Lakeside Baptist Church.
Interment followed at Woodlawn
Cemetery.


Family members received
friends at the church prior to the
service from 2:30 until 4 p.m.
Joe P. Burns Funeral Home was
in charge of the arrangements.
Audrey M. Stephens
Audrey M. Stephens, 76, died
March 16, 2007, at her home.
A native and lifelong resident of
Taylor County, she was the
daughter of the late William Blue
and the late Marie Sessions Blue.
She had been employed at Martin
Electronics for a number of years.
Survivors include: a daughter,
Tina Blair of Perry; a brother,
James Blue of Flippin, Ark.; a
sister, Vivian Sciortino; three
grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Monday, March 19, at Joe P. Bums
Funeral Home, which was in
charge of the arrangements.

Ernest Roland Eakins
Ernest Roland Eakins, 81, a
native and lifelong resident of
Taylor County, died March 22,
2007, at the Good Samaritan
Center in Dowling Park.
The son of the late, Benjamin
Jackson Eakins and the late Mary
Abigail Langford Eakins, he was a
Baptist and had been employed as
a truck driver for Williams and
Boland Timber Company for many
years. He was a U. S. Army Air
Corps veteran serving during the
Korean Conflict.
:Survivors include: two sons,
Earnei "Earnie" Eakins and wife


Pattie, and Royce Michael "Mike"
Eakins, all of Eridu; three
grandchildren, Sarah Catie
Drawdy and husband Seth, Amy
Elizabeth Parker and husband
Ryan, and Jennifer Ann Eakins;

a BBQ dinner and auction.
"The support was great. We had
people from Shady Grove, Perry,
Keaton Beach, Eridu, Lamont,
Madison and Sirmans come out
and support Billy. We served more
dinners and raised more money
than any of us expected,"
organizers said.
"Billy was. able to attend the
event, which was a blessing to see
him out and enjoying friends, and
family. Overall this was a great day,
and all of us left feeling blessed
that our community--even though
it has grown over the years--still
reaches out when called upon. We
want to thank everyone who was
involved and we 'thank God
for allowing this event to
happen."

Last fall was a pretty productive season at the movies
with a number of good films being released both wide
and small. For home viewers, that means a pile of good
movies are being release now on DVD.
Several great movies have already been released in
the past few weeks including Martin Scorsese's "The
Departed" and the James Bond film, "Casino Royale."
On Tuesday, March 27, four more movies will be
released on DVD, all of which earned at least one Oscar
nomination.
First up is "Happy Feet," the latest animated feature,
from Dreamworks which picked up the Academy Award
for Best Animated Feature last month. The film tells the
story of the emperor penguins of Antarctica and their
apparent propensity to burst into Top 40 hit songs.
Into this world of musically-gifted, flightless fowl,
Mumble is born. Mumbl&e (voiced by Elijah Wood)
couldn't carry a tune if his life depended on it--and in a
community where everyone can and does, it just might.
What he can do is dance,,-iowever, which amuses his
mother and horrifies his father. ,
While "Happy Feet" is an enjoyable film--especially
for the kids--it's biggest fault is that it tries to be too
many films in one.
Children should enjoy it if for nothing else than its
beautiful animation and over-the-top characters. The
song and dance routines are fun and don't overstay their
welcome.
Parents should be warned that Mumble and his friends
face a number of predators during their adventures and a
couple of the scenes can be a somewhat scary with the
realistic animation. An encounter with a hungry sea lion
was particularly intense.
"Happy Feet" brings A ith it a number of messages,
some about the en% ironment and some about acceptance
of those who are different, and tends-to be rather heavy-
handed with them.
Although the .ploi take. some n.ild turn, in the la 1 30
'!.inuies.or so'the film.-is an enlo\ahle romp in a
beautiful computer-generated wonderland that will have
children dancing and parents tapping their toes.
"Happy Feet" is rated PG for some mild peril and rude
humor.
For those who like the occasional foreign flavor in
'their movies, the Chinese film, "Curse of the Golden
Flower," will also hit the streets on Tuesday.
The film, based on a famous play, tells the sordid tale
of the imperial family during China's late Tang Dynasty
during, the 10th century.
The Emperor and his family, over which he rules with
an iron fist, live in the impeccably decorated and well-
protected palace. The eldest son, a product of 'the
Emperor's ill-fated first marriage, wants to be sent to the-
frontier. The second son is returning to the palace after a
three-year stint along that same frontier. The youngest
son is confined to the palace and awaits the day he can
proye himself to his father. The Empress is sickly and
must-.take medicine several times a day.
Using all of this as a catalyst, the movie shows
everyone's motives and ambitions, with more than 'one
illicit affair and a secret plot for rebellion. The bet
comparison would be to a Shakespearean play, such as
"Macbeth" or "King Lear.". Each family member pursues
his or her own plots and schemes uritil it comes to a head
in the third act for a bloody afid tragic conclusion,,,
"Curse" was released in theaters in the original
Mandarin with English subtitles, but the DVD release
includes an English language dub.
Although the film is not a martial arts film, there are
some well-choreographed fights scenes, especially when
everything comes to a head in the third act.
"Curse of the Golden Flower" is rated R for violence.
From Ancient China to California we go with "The
Pursuit of Happyness."


This "based on a true story" movie is about Chris
Gardner (Will Smith), a struggling salesman trying to
keep his, wife Linda (Thandie Newton) and his son
Christopher (real-life son Jaden Smith) from slipping
completely into poverty.
As the movie opens, we learn that Chris has sunk his
life's savings into bone density machines, a medical
device that Unfortunately doesn't sell well. Just as his
wife is preparing to leave him, he has a fateful encounter
that will change his life forever.
Walking down the sidewalk, he sees a sharply-dressed
man getting out of a Ferrari and;asks him, "What do you
do and how do you do it?" The man is a stock broker and
he tells Chris that he needs to be good with numbers and
good with people. Chris is good at both, even if he can't
seem to sell his bone density machines, and decides he
is going to become a stock broker. The problem is the
internship is unpaid.
What follows is the story of a man trying to be the
father he never knew for his son, and fighting--and, at
times, failing--to keep them from becoming homeless.
Will Smith puts on arguably the best performance of
his career and richly deserves the Academy Award
nomination he received. He is able to display the simple
happiness of a man able to buy his son dinner as well as
the utter desperation and horror when they are forced to
sleep in a subway restroom because they have nowhere
else to go. The younger Smith shows he picked up some
talent from his actor parents and adds a great
performance of his own.
"The Pursuit of Happyness" is rated PG-13 for some-
language.
Last but certainly not least is one of my favorite films
from last year, "Children of Men."
The Alfonso Cuar6n directed film is about the world
some 20 years hence in which women have lost the
ability to bear children. Humanity is faced with the cold
truth that there will be no future generation- %hen the

Set in England, "Children of Men" depicts a harsh
world in;' which most people have given up hope while
the rest search desperately for sorfieone to blame.
Surviving in a rundown London on the verge of
becoming a police state, Theodore Faron (Clive Owen)
is one of the ones who has given up. Once an activist, he
now simply goes to work and back home, taking an
occasional detour to visit his friend--a former radical
now in his 70s'played expertly and hilariously by an
unrecognizable Michael Caine.
Theo's routine, however, is disturbed when he is
kidnapped by a terrorist organization only to meet a
former partner in crime and love, Julian Taylor (Julianne
Moore). Before he knows it,'Theo is caught in a web of
intrigue and danger as various players fight for control
of the world's most precious possession, the first
pregnant woman.in almost 20 years.
Every scene of the film is captured beautifully, and
much of the credit must be given to cinematographer
.Emmanuel Lubezki. The camera work in "Children of
Men" is mind boggling with some of the best use of
'handheld cameras I have seen, especially when used in
intricately directed and planned single shots lasting
minutes at a time. The fact that he didn't win the
Academy Award last month was the biggest snub of the
year. ,
Clive Owen in this film cemented himself in my mind
,as one of today's truly unrated actors out there and the
supporting cast, especially Caine, delivers the goods as
well.
The movie is one of the best science-fiction films of
its kinds to come out since the original "Matrix" film and
can even hold up to comparisons to "Bladerunner."
"Children of Men" is rated R for strong violence,
language, some drug use and brief nudity.

Matthew O'Brien ("Nothing &
Everything"), Shannan Johnson
("The Grey Area"), Marla DuMont
("Welcome to Bedfem, er,
Bethlehem?"), and Adam Lucas
("De(con)struction"). The
productions are directed by the
Master of Fine Arts directing
students: Ryan Clark, Jennifer
Sassaman, and Allison Frost, as
well as FSU professors, George

explore the development of new

Playwright Marla DuMont debuted
her work "Welcome to Bedlem, er,
Bethlehem?" Directed by Natalya
Baldyga, the play is about the
unique modes of communication
between people; what happens
when that communication has
begun to break down; and the
difficult, yet comical, process of
regenerating old bonds. Matthew
O'Brien's "Nothing & Everything,"
a story of four twenty-somethings
brought together on a fall day in
September after the city of New
York suffers a blackout,
immediately followed. "Nothing
& Everything" was directed by

For a $5 donation to the March of Dimes, tickets are available for a
chance to win a private dinner and photo op with the Grammy-
nominated bluegrass group, "The Grascals," during the fifth annual
Florida State Bluegrass Festival.
Tickets are available at the Perry/Taylor County Chamber of
Commerce as well as at Forest Capital State Park during the festival.
In addition to the private dinner, for a $1 donation, you can receive a
chance to win a guitar signed by numerous bluegrass bands, including
the Grascals, Lonesome River Band, The Chapmans, Melissa King and
IIIrd Time Out.

be meals from local restaurants, as well as local gourmet chefs;
handpainted gift items; and assorted gift certificates. The baked potato
