residents
Taylor County Emergency
:Management will soon begin
issuing re-entry passes to coastal
.residents and business owners in
preparation for the 2007 Hurricane
'-Season.
SAccording to Emergency
Management Director Brianne
Hoover, 'the passes will be issued
beginning with Adams Beach
: residents or business owners along
: CR 361 to Hagens Cove Road.
The re-entry passes enable
:evacuated residents to re-enter
theii property once it is deemed
safe by county officials following
an incident such as a hurricane.
The pass will identify a resident
as the registered property or
business owner.
Immediate residents of Adams
Beach, Dekle Beach, Jug Island,
Ezell Beach, Keaton Beach, Cedar
Island, Dark Island, Bird Island,
Fish Creek and Hagens Cove are
urged to acquire the re-entry pass,
Hoover said.
The re-entry passes will be
issued at Taylor County
Emergency Management located
.at 301 Industrial Park Drive (next
to Perry-Foley Airport).
Proper identification is a
requirement to 'pick up a pass,
Hoover added.
A photo ID along with proof of
ownership or residency of beach

residency or ownership can be a
utility bill or title of property. The,

The Magnolia Bay Marina and
Resort could become the county's
largest employer, according to
numbers provided by Urban Realty
Solutions whose survey is part of'
the development's comprehensive
plan amendment application.
The application, which the
development submitted to the-
county in December, states that
economist Lin Gilbert with the
Tampa-based firm conducted an
economic analysis for the
proposed $700 million project.
According to the analysis, the
development would generate
approximately $9.6 million in total
annual property taxes.
Once completed, the project
is expected to generate
approximately 1,187 new jobs,
resulting in an annual payroll of
some $29.6 million. If that were to
occur, Magnolia Bay Marina and
Resort would be the largest
employer in the county.
The analysis also projects that
by the fourth year following its
completion, the project would be
stabilized and would begin to
generate some $92 million in
taxable revenue, "resulting in a
projected $460,333 worth of sales
tax returned to the county by the
state."
According to the county's
planning department, no date has
yet been set for a public hearing on
the application before the Taylor
County Planning Board.
The Taylor County Commission
will hold a public hearing Tuesday
night to determine whether or not
the county will abandon a portion
of the right-of-way of Dekle Beach
Road to the development, which is
the adjacent landowner.
The commission denied a
similar request from the
development in November. That
meeting drew some 16 area
residents who spoke for and
against abandoning the right-of-
way.
Tuesday's hearing is scheduled
to begin at 6:20 p.m. during the
commission's regular board
meeting at the County Courthouse
Annex.
According to Attorney Trey
Howard, who represents the
development, the new request is
for a different section of the road
than the one in November, but like
the previous petition, it will not
close the road itself, only a portion
of the right-of-way adjacent to it.
Commission Chairman Malcolm
Page expressed reservations in
January about allowing a second
hearing, but the commission voted
3-2 to allow the hearing to move
forward.
"We're hopeful the county
commission will approve our
request," Howard said Thursday.
"This will be a huge economic
boost to our economy.
"In Taylor County, we have very
limited land that can be developed
because so much of our coastline is
owned by the state.
"This is a chance for Taylor
County to have something better
than anyone else in the state. It's
our time to shine," Howard added.
The development has become a
hot-button issue since it wasfirst
announced, with a number of
coastal residents and
environmental groups attacking
plans to dredge a channel through
the Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic
Preserve, which they say will
cause irreversible damage to the
coastal ecosystem.
According to a development
-. iv vivo
agreement the commission reached
with the developers in October, the
development will deed over the
proposed boat ramp and public
parking to the county.
In January, the. Perry/Taylor
County Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors unanimously
approved a resolution supporting
the development. One week later,
the Taylor County Coastal
Committee presented a position
paper to the county commission in
favor of the project because of the
potential for a new public boat
ramp with deep-water access.

Police issue money order 'fraud alert'
Police are warning residents,
again, of a popular scam going on
which. "many people in this and
other communities are falling for."
Last week, Perry Police
Department Ptl. Lindsey Shaw was
called to Capital City Bank in
reference to fraud. When she
arrived, Shaw found 'out that a
customer had "come to the bank to
- deposit 10 money orders from the
United States Postal Service.f
"The teller deposited a portion of
the money, and then returned
$6,474.50 in cash to the customer.
Later, the teller called a
verification number to confirm that
the money orders were legitimate.
Based on information received
from an automated system and an
associate, the money orders were
believed to be counterfeit.
"When the customer was
interviewed,, she said that she
applied for a job on the internet
and started working for them a few
weeks ago. She said that she
receives money orders through the
mail and then cashes them through
her bank. She then wires the
money, minus a 10% fee, to a
location she receives through a e-
mail letter.
"The customer/victim said she
did not know the money orders
were counterfeit and agreed to
make payments back to the bank,"
Shaw added.
The customer received an e-mail
from a man claiming to be James
Burton--a representative of
Chelsea Textiles in London. He
offered the Perry woman, "a
chance to earn $2,000 to $6,000
per month, with no start-up costs
and no investment. And you can do
it by working as little as three
hours a week.

"A friend is one who strengthens
you with prayers, blesses you with
love and encourages you with
hope."
Taylor County lost one of its
dearest friends last week with the
death of Frances Gilmore.
Known to many simply as
"Mama Frances," Gilmore touched
countless lives through acts of
kindness and goodness that will
long -be remembered.
Gilmore took great joy in
helping people and that abiding
affection was returned a hundred
fold, as evidenced by the
outpouring of love and support
shown her in the days and weeks
leading up to her 100th birthday in
December.
"Frances was the first person to
come see me when I moved to
Perry 45 years ago. She was a
gracious lady in every respect,"
Coreane McDaniel said.
"She was a true Christian. She
put Christ first and after Him, her
family. She was the kind of
Christian who didn't mind talking
to people about their lives--and
would point out a better way of life
if there was a need.
"If you've seen her yard, then
you know what I mean when I say
that's what she was like...neat and
trim," McDaniel said.
Gale Dickert grew up next door
to Gilmore in the 40s and 50s, and
that closeness fostered a lifelong
friendship.
"She was more than a friend, she
was family. Her home was our
home. With great strength of
character, courage and wisdom,
she was a teacher and a wonderful -
role model for. all who knew her.

"We would have told our clients

don't wish to give them the idea
that we are ripping them off."
Perry Police Chief Vemn Clark
said over a dozen people in Taylor
County have fallen prey to this,
scam.
"One of the bad things about this
type of scam, is that the' victim
receives a counterfeit money order
or check, cashes it, and sends the
scammer legitimate money back,"
he said.
"Most of the time, the bad
people are operating outside of the
United States, so there is little to
nothing that we can do about it.
You have to use common sense in
these things. You have to think,
'Okay, why would a legitimate
company send me money orders
for .several thousands of dollars,
wanting me to cash them and get
another money order and send it
back to them.'
"It just doesn't make sense.
These people are vultures, preying
on the unsuspecting. That's the key
word. Suspect. You need to be
suspicious of deals that sound
like an easy, quick way to make
money.

Charter member of Garden Club
Gilmore named 'Lady of the Year' in 1998
GILMORE
Continued from page 1
She taught us how to face life's
challenges with great grace, never
once complaining, always with a
smile," Dickert said.
A charter member of the Perry
Garden Club, which originated in
Foley, Gilmore made great efforts
to remain a contributing part of the
group.
"When her husband became ill,
Frances wanted to quit the garden
club because she felt like she
couldn't be involved enough with
it. However, her daughter and I
talked her out of it, and that's when
we suggested she volunteer with
the telephone committee,"
McDaniel said.
The telephone became Gilmore's
enduring link with not only garden
club members, but also a host of
family and friends.
"When my husband died 10
years ago, Frances started calling
me o'n a daily basis to check on me,
and we spoke on the phone every
day since," McDaniel said.
"Frances lived alone and was
completely independent until after
her 100th birthday. She was strong
and active, still puttering around
the garden, fixing food for others
and enjoying church and the
garden club until just a few months
before her death. She will be
missed by all who loved her,"
Dickert said.
Gilmore first came to Perry
when her husband, Joe, transferred
here with the railroad. From the
early 1950s to the mid-1960s, she
worked at Bassett's Dairy as a
public relations representative.
"She called on new people
moving into town and tried to get
them as customers, because at that
time we offered a home delivery
service. Every Monday, she

on the accounts," Jake Bassett
said.
"I met her in 1957 when I first
came to Perry. In fact, she rented a
house for me to move into three
months before I got here. Rental
houses were in short supply during
that time because they were
building the second mill at
Buckeye. But she knew I was
getting out of the service and was
coming to work for the dairy, so
she made sure I had a house to
come to," he said. "She was a very
loyal friend to us and we were
loyal to her. She was a simple
person who lived a simple life. A
devout Christian who loved
her friends and always faithful
to them. A beautiful Christian
lady.
"She was also very devoted to
her husband. He was sick for about
18 years and she stayed right by his
side and took care of him," Bassett
said.
Gilmore was a friend to the
entire Bassett family, and was
there when Bassett's son, Jim,
needed a hiding place for his car on
his wedding day.
"She hid my car in her garage so
my friends wouldn't find it and
decorate it after the wedding," Jim
.said.
Every Christmas, up until her
99th birthday, Gilmore would
make a special batch of holiday
fudge to share with her loved ones.
"This year was the first time in
49 years we didn't get her fudge for
Christmas. It was the best fudge
you've ever had," Jim said.
Gilmore was a longtime member
of First Baptist Church and was
named Beta Sigma Phi's "Lady of
the Year" in 1998.
Blessed with an abundance of
years, Gilmore, her brother Foyl
and her sister Hazel were also part
of a longevity study conducted by
Harvard University. Hazel died at
age 98; Foyl, almost 102.
Dickert, who along with her
sister, Diane, eulogized Gilmore
during funeral services held
Monday, summed up her life with
one simple statement, "I was
blessed to have had Frances as a'
friend."

A great day for fishing
By PAT McGRIFF
One More Cast Guide Service
This week's report will be a
short piece about a day with the
Woods 'N Water Fishing team on
board the Team Triplefish 29 foot
Triton.
Well, first the participants:
Captain of the boat, as usual,
Billy Pillbw and I started to ready
the boat Wednesday, this time we
were working on the windlass
(electric anchor puller), on his
Triton only to discover that an
energetic friend of Billy's, who had
thought to be helping, had over
zealously encouraged the failing
windlass with a claw hammer
rendering what possibility it had
working...well useless. So after
three hours of dismantling, filing
down burrs and raw edges
reassembling, and dismantling
again we finally decided we would
be pulling the anchor by hand
Friday.
Thursday: 3 p.m. new parts for
the windlass come in Next-Day
delivery and we dismantle the
windlass (oh did I mention we had
changed anchors and chain just to
make it easier to pull by
hand)...again...this time with
success and after changing the
anchor and chain back again we
were in business.
Back to the
participants....several calls later it
is determined that the Ga.
boys...otherwise known in certain
circles as Beanblossom and
Barbee...are ready, willing and able
to make it down to go offshore
Friday...except their rods and reels
(which stay at my house) are in
need of new TripleFish line 40 lb.
on the two snapper outfits and 60
TripleFish Perlon on the grouper
' outfits. No problem...1 will just
do that after I tie up a few dozen
leaders. First 12 fluorocarbon
(TripleFish) 40 l'b. with
Gamagatzu octopus 5/0 for mango
snapper, and then 12, 12/0 39977
Mustad EZ baiter hooks tied on
100 lb. pink TripleFish Perlon,
for grouper, then some bait hooks
say 12 leaders of 20 # TF fluoro.
with Eagle Claw # 84 1/0's 1for
catching porgies, squirrelfish and
black sea bass for live bait with
Fishbites.
After securing all the tackle, I
got to bed around 1 a.m. that
night.
Hardees at 6:45 then ice down
bait and drinks, and the fishbox on
the Triton and get to the beach at
8 a.m. We left the 47 ft. depths
and bait fishing with a live well
full of squirrelfish 50-60 and
maybe 5 porgies and six large
black sea bass.
We ran out to 87 feet in less
than two hours with a slight
ground swell, a foot or so chop,
and started our day by catching and
releasing two red snapper 3-4
pounds then put four gags in the
boat in quick order.. Cut up goggle
eyes and live squirrelies were the
best bait early.
The boat slid off to the side and
held 40-45 ft off our intended spot,
typical for the first anchoring.
The light outfits 40 pound
Triple Fish Perlon were taking
almost all of the fish. Billy
managed a couple of gags on the
heavier stuff, after Ben took a nice
gag early on his heavier rig. He
then changed to his 40 and
brought in a nice two pound black
(mangrove), snapper. Cal and I
stayed with the snapper rods and I
was rewarded with a nice black
snapper (mangrove snapper) of 6-7
pounds and before we moved we
had four blacks in the boat and had
eight gags and two scamp. Half a
Northern mackerel or a half a
Goggleye continued to outshine
the live bait.
We left that spot and moved
four or five miles out further and
hit a spot which yielded several
gags, a red grouper and one more
scamp but no more mangos. We
tossed back four more red snapper.
Grouper wanted live stuff here dead
was ..well dead to all but the reds
which were dead to us...out of
season.....
We decided to move back, to a,
number over 12 miles in, annJ
drifted up three more red snapper
for release and three keeper gags.
Squirrelfish took the gags.
Our final tally 14 gags (to 13
pounds) one red grouper, four
black snapper and three scamp.
And the windlass...flawless...
We ran in 4200 rpms all the
way in, about 35 miles per hour
and Cal and Ben slept on the
beanbags all the way in, never had
a bump or a one ft. wave.
A perfect day on the water!

The Taylor County High
- School Baseball Bulldogs lost
their season opener 0-7 to Santa
Fe on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Pace
Field.
Josiah Anderson (0-1) took the
loss on the mound, but had to be
replaced early because of a
hamstring injury. "This same
injury hampered Josiah last year,"
said Coach Kelly Armstrong. "He
is a senior, our lead-off hitter, and
very important to our team. His
injury really put the team in a
melancholy mood, but we know
Josiah is going to work hard at
getting back as soon as he can."
Derek Miller and Brandon Mock
pitched 4 innings of relief after
Anderson left the game. The two
left-handers scattered 3 hits over 5
innings.
"All seven of Santa Fe's runs
were unearned," said Armstrong.
"This made it an especially tough
loss for us. Our guys are young
and it took a game like this to
help us grow up. In high school
baseball if you don't throw strikes,
but you make errors in the field
and mental mistakes, you will not
win."
Armstrong gave credit to hitters
Will Hall (1-3) and Zach Knowles
(1-3, 2B) while tipping his hat to
senior center-fielder Gerald Walker
for an "outstanding, diving catch
on a deep line drive in the sixth."
"We look to rebound this
Saturday against our rival
Suwannee," Armstrong
maintained, rallying the Bulldogs.'
"We should use this game against
Santa Fe as a learning tool that
will make us better, and that's
what I hope we do."
Taylor beats Madison
The Taylor County Middle
School baseball team opened the
season with a win over Madison
Central on Tuesday by the score of
9-4. William Wentworth threw a
complete game allowing only 4
hits while striking out 9 Madison
Central batters.
Caleb Rhodes led the Bulldogs
at the plate going 3-3 and scoring
2 runs. Lamar Hathcock was 2-2
with a triple and a single and also
scored 2 runs. Other hitters for the
'Dogs were Morgan Pelt 1-2, Chad
Hill 1-2, Beau Rodgers 1-2,
Hunter Barfield 1-2 with a double
and Jesse Braswell 1-2.
"Overall, I felt like we played a
very solid game considering it was
the first game of the year," TCMS
Coach Reggie Wentworth said.
The coach said he was also
proud of his team's defensive play.
"We had a couple of players that
had to sit out the first game
because of a violation of team
rules. When we get those guys
back we will be very solid in
every area," he said.

Celebration a 'grand occasion'
By B.D. WILLIAMS
"A Friend is a Gift of God"
Among the great and glorious
gifts our Heavenly Father sends, is
the gift of understanding that we
find in loving friends.
For somehow in the generous
heart of loving faithful friends, the
good God in his charity and
wisdom always sends, a sense of
understanding and the power of
perception and mixes these fine
qualities with kindness and
affection.
So when we need some sympathy
or a friendly hand to touch, and
speak words that mean so much,
we seek our true and trusted friend
in the knowledge that we'll find a
heart that's sympathetic and an
understanding mind.

To all family members of Taylor County, on Dec. 30, 2006,
a tragic event fell upon one of our own.
Ms. Edna L. Benton, whom many of you know as a little lady with a passion for her family for fishing, for her
undying faith in Christ, and love for church: Ms. Benton has lived in Taylor County all her life and has always tried
to help others above herself. She is now in need of her fellow Taylor Countians' help. Ms. Benton suffered a stroke
on Dec. 30, but that was only the beginning of her test of faith. One week later, Ms. Benton suffered a more severe
stroke that has since caused partial paralysis to her right side. Ms. Benton,
with her neverending faith and her old-fashioned Taylor County toughness. is
doing much better While she remains with partial paralysis, she is in need of
your help During her hospital stay, only two days after her second stroke she
was evicted from her apartment She is now at Tallahasse Memorial Rehabili-
tation Center for stroke victims While doing belier, she may never be able to
live on her own again She has expressed how much she wants to come
home to Perry and live witn her daughter, however, in order for her wish to be
granted. she needs a room built with handicapped restroom facilities and is

'Hannibal Rising' reveals
the anatomy of a cannibal
You know that old car you have, the one you keep in
the garage or under a tarp behind your house. You rarely
drive it, but you keep it around because of the wonderful
memories it brings back to you every time you take a
seat behind the wheel.
One bright winter's day, you pull off the tarp, wash off
the dust, and hop into the driver's seat. You turn the key
and the engine sputters. For a moment you're worried
that your trip is over before it begins. You try the, key
again and this time the engine turns over and, while you
couldn't say it's purring, the car is running once more.
You put it into gear. The engine sputters again, but
doesn't stall, and after a backfire or two, you're out of the
driveway and onto the road. You keep the windows
down and as the wind blows through your hair, you
remember all the good times you had together.
Like that old car, "Hannibal Rising," which opened
last week to a ,.
lackluster box office
and a beating from
the critics, is a movie
that sputters at first,
but once it picks up
speed and gets to the
meat of the action
(pun intended), it's a
fun ride and a chance
to have one more
visit with an old
friend--or at least,
enemy. ,'V
Dr. Hannibal. .. - .
Lector, as portrayed
by Anthony Hopkins
in the Academy
Award-winning film "Silence of the Lambs," (not to
mention the sequel "Hannibal" and prequel "Red
Dragon") has remained entrenched into our collective
consciousness as one of the most fascinating, and
ruthless, people to ever grace the silver screen.
" Like the old car. I brought--many good memories into
the theater with me from Silence of the Lambs,' "Red
Dragon" and even the much-maligned "Hannibal." I was
worried, however, over whether the engine would even
start for this film without Hopkins, and I went in with
low expectations for "Hannibal Rising."
Despite its flaws, the film instead turned out to be a
pleasant surprise and filled an enjoyable two hours at the
movies. /
"Hannibal.Rising" gets off to arather poor start as we
are introduced to a young eight-year-old Hannibal
(Aaron Thomas) and his sister, Mischa, playing by a
pond in 1944 Lithuania. An explosion nearby sends the
pair running back to the nearby chateau and their'
parents, who are packing to escape the incoming
German army. Why had the parents let their children
wonder off alone, I wondered. Of course the answer is so
the movie could open up on a peaceful scene of children
playing by a pond.
The family narrowly escapes to a nearby hunting
lodge and soon we see the German soldiers and their
Lithuanian conscripts looting the chateau. The SS
officer in charge gleefully looks for Jews to kill ahd
sniffs the rest to make sure they're not gypsies. He offers
his local soldiers the opportunity to prove they are SS
material by killing the lone Jew they find among the
chateau's staff. It would have been easier for them if they
had just held placards saying, "We're the bad guys."
Meanwhile, things settle down at the lodge until
Russian soldiers arrive only to be killed, along with
Hannibal's parents, when they're shot by a German
plane. Of course, before long the SS wannabes show up
to loot the lodge and find the children, hoping they can

use them for leverage if they are captured by either side
stealing. As hunger sets in, however, they find the
children may have another use.
Eight years later, Hannibal (Gaspard Ulliel) is mute
and plagued by nightmares about the fate of his sister,
the details of which he is unable to remember. He is still
living in his old chateau, but it has become a state-run
orphanage and he is just one of many children staying
there following the war. After a quick act of revenge on
a bullying classmate, he steals a stack of letters,
miraculously still in the exact same drawer he saw his
mother leave them in eight years before.
All this being said, everything thus far is in the first 20
minutes or so of the movie. Free from the orphanage,
Hannibal escapes from tHle Eastern Bloc and makes his
way to Paris and his aunt, Lady Murasaki Shikibu (Li
Gong). From there, the movie really takes off with
Hannibal learning
martial arts from
his aunt and going
to medical school,
n l where he makes
Slmoney by
preparing cadavers
for classes.
Once Hannibal
regains more of his
memories from his
n a stay at the hunting
lodge, he sets upon
a bloody path of
revenge against the
: soldiers involved.
While there are
still some
questions remaining about how the Hannibal of this film
becomes the serial killer seen in the later movies are left
unanswered, "Hannibal Rising" provides a suitable and
believable portrayal of his early years and descent into
violence and cannibalism.
Ulihel does a superb tob a.s thea teenage Hannibal,
showing his intelligence andcold; calculating nature
even if his personality is still developing in the first half
of the film. Hannibal is lost early on, with no one left to
call family except for his beautiful and exotic aunt. She
provides his balance but it isn't until he finds murder and
revenge that he seems to truly find peace. Ulliel is able
to bring to the screen all of these aspects of the character,
and while Hopkins will always be the definitive Lector,
the young newcomer has made his own mark on the
character.
Hannibal's interactions with the war crimes inspector
(also trying to find the soldiers involved in his sister's
death) are particularly spell-binding at times and give a
glimpse of what is to come with his interactions with
law enforcement.
Aside from the critiques I already mentioned, the
script holds up well for novelist Thomas Harris' first
attempt at screen writing. Harris' novels have served as
a the basis for all four Hannibal films.
Don't go in expecting a crime thriller like "Silence of
the Lambs" or "Red Dragon," but "Hannibal Rising"
serves as an above average revenge film as well as a
character piece on the well-known cannibal. In this, it is,
an improvement over "Hannibal," which did not have a
lot to offer non-Lector fans.
SJust as people have asked you about why you've kept
that old car, many critics have asked if there was a need
to make this movie. A need? No. But when it's through,
"Hannibal Rising" is worth the price of admission and
gives a new perspective on one of the best known film
characters of all time.
In short, ride on.

Presidents Day is a day set aside to honor all of the U.S. presidents.
We often think of two presidents, George Washington and Abraham
Lincoln, when we celebrate this holiday as it falls by design between their
birthdays. Many look at this day as a tribute to every person who has ever
served in the office as President of the United States of America.
Observed the third Monday each February.
I hope I shall possess
firmness and virtue enough
to maintain what I
consider the most enviable
of all titles, the character
of an honest man.
--George Washington
A morsel of genuine history
is a thing so rare as to be
always valuable.
--Thomas Jefferson
I believe there are more
instances of the
abridgment of the freedom
of the people by gradual
and silent encroachments
of those in power than by
violent and sudden
usurpations.
--James Madison
The best leader is the one
who has sense enough to
pick good men to do what
he wants done, and self-
restraint enough to keep
from meddling with them
while they do it.
--Theodore Roosevelt
Patriotism is easy to
understand in America--it
means looking out for
yourself by looking out for
your country.
--Calvin Coolidge
It is amazing what you
can accomplish if you do
not care who gets the
credit.
--Harry S. Truman
We are going to have peace
even if we have to fight for
it.
--Dwight D. Eisenhower
Farming looks mighty easy
when your plow is a pencil
and you're a thousand
miles from the corn field.
--Dwight D. Eisenhower
If one morning I walked on
top of the water across the
Potomac River, the
headline that afternoon
would read: "President
Can't Swim."
--Lyndon B. Johnson
With the observance of Valentine Day this week I was
reminded of those first tentative steps toward young
love. For children the traditional Valentine's party was
the perfect time to express your heartfelt adoration for
the love of your life. One way this affection was carried
out was by exchanging Valentines at school and
church. The days leading up to the actual exchange
were charged with excitement and whispered secrets
as you spent hours laboring over making the all-time
greatest Valentine imaginable for that special
someone. Smells of glue, crepe paper, construction
paper and crayons could be found in every classroom
as we cut out shaped hearts and diamonds decorating
them with hand-drawn hearts with an arrow piercing
each heart. Underneath Cupid's arrow we" would write
messages of undying love for the special ones in our
lives. For those who did not hold as much importance
in our hearts we would come up with clever words
such as, "Roses are red, Violets are blue, Something
stinks, is it you?"
We could get away with this pettiness since we never
signed our name to a single card but I'm sure the
recipient of these cute little valentines was able to
figure out who the sender was by the snickers when
the cards were deposited in the valentine mailboxes.
These mailboxes were also works of art made by each
child. Most of the time the teacher would allow you to
create a mailbox on you own. These mailboxes were an
extension of a child's personality. It was easy to see
which children lived on farms. Their mailboxes were
usually decorated with farm animals scattered among
the red hearts while the town children would have our
hearts decorating stores with a stray cat or dog throw
in. The finished mailboxes would line the walls of the
classroom that were decked out in yards and yards of
red, pink and white crepe paper streamers.
On the designated day first thing in the morning we
would finally get to deposit our Valentines in the
mailboxes. After. the mailboxes" wvre stuffedd"' to
capacity we usually had to wait the entire day before
it was time to discover what was inside our special
box. Ever so often we were brave enough to sign our
name for the current object of our affection. Oh, the
sheer thrill of watching as they opened the valentine
was enough to fill your heart with love for all eternity.
And the thrill didn't stop there because you got to
duplicate it at church during the Sunday School
Valentine party.
Those first forays into love carried some unknown
dangers as I was soon to find out at the ripe old age of
six. The love of my life at that time was the preacher's
son David. In my eyes he was "Mr. Right." That
assumption came to an abrupt halt on one particular
Sunday night. As I recall it was a typical Sunday
night. The adults were visiting inside the church. after
a good sermon while all the children were lining up
outside for a game of "ain't no boogers out tonight."
David was chosen to be the booger and at the count of
10 the rest of us children scattered. The object of the
game was to stay out of reach from the booger and to
make it to home before he caught you. Well, it started
out good as I ran at top speed around the church well
on my way to home which was a block enclosure at the
front of the church. Just as I rounded the corner
David appeared out of nowhere in hot pursuit. I kicked
up my speed a notch or two and could see home base
just ahead. The problem was I did not allow time to
slow down before I hit home base. I overshot the block
enclosure and stopped with my right leg laying across
the block. That's the position I was in when I realized
that love can bring extreme pain as David also failed
to stop and landed his full-body weigh on my exposed
leg. I heard it crack and my immediate tears were
witness to the end of my first love affair. I no longer
wanted David anywhere near me since the sight of him
conjured up visions of pain that I had to endure
during the setting of the bone in my leg as well as the
long months of wearing a heavy cast from my toes to
the top of my thigh.
Oh well, that was when I was six. Like most children
I forgot the pain and once again was smitten by an
older boy that lived down the street from me. That
affair was destined to end as well when I mentioned to
daddy that this boy must eat lots of prunes. After
daddy investigated my latest Don Juan he found out
that it wasn't prunes, it was chewing tobacco that was
emitting that particular smell. Since any form of
tobacco use was taboo for church going folks like our
family, this great love also became a distant memory.
I didn't protest very much since the thought of
actually kissing someone with chewing tobacco in
their mouth was kinda gross to me. Now some 50
years later these memories tickle me but at the time it
was serious business.
Most children don't make their valentines today but
the ritual of exchange is still the same. This special
day gives us all the opportunity to
appreciate each other and it gives us
a peek at young love in the making as
we watch another generation doing
many of the same things we did
as we learned about love.
