Concerns raised over contract


Stadium turnover postponed

Board postponed formally

concern with one paragraph of the
license agreement pertaining to the
parking lots.
Although the city is anxious to

When local attorney Michael
Smith returned home one night to
find a recorded message from the
U.S. Army, he thought the worst.
His son, 2nd Lt. Stephen C.
Smith, is serving in Iraq and any
number of terrible scenarios
played out in his mind.

Michael's wife, Gayle, was out
of town and out of reach, so he
had to make the call alone. The
officer on the other end quickly
allayed the worst of his concerns,
telling him that Stephen had been
injured but his condition was
stable.
"He told me to call the next day
after noon and he might have

more information," Michael said.
Instead, Stephen himself called
home the next morning.
"He called me from the
hospital," Michael said. "'It's pot
big deal dad,' he said."
"He told me there had been an
explosion and he got a
concussion.
"I just wanted to put everyone
at ease," Stephen posted on his
internet blog several days later. "I
am doing fine. I am recovering
well and getting plenty of rest.
Nothing serious. I will be
enjoying paperwork for the time
being as I recover."

Ritch named employee of the year

with YMCA?
YMCA is on a mission to
"build strong kids, strong families
and strong communities" and
hopes to bring that mission to
Taylor Couity.
The Tallahassee branch of the
national non-profit organization
has approached both the city
council and county commission
expressing an interest in
operating recreation programs for
local youth.
Addressing the city, council
recently, Peggy Conklin,
president of the Tallahassee
chapter, said "YMCA can bring to
Perry programs beyond sports.
We offer programs for all ages
and all backgrounds. We have the
ability to serve residents from
birth to death. And we don't turn
away anyone, even if they can't
pay membership dues."
YMCA programs, she said, "set
out to develop in members our
four core values--caring, honesty,
respect and responsibility. We are
not here to promote A certain'
religious doctrine, but rather to
promote Christian principles."
Currently, the city and county
are looking to collaborate on a
request for proposals (RFP)
related toc the operation of the
new Taylor County Sports
Complex and other organized
recreational leagues.

A veteran of 28 years of service
in Taylor County schools, Janett E.
Ritch, of Taylor' Technical
Institute, has been named 2006-
2007 Florida School-Related
Employee of the Year.
Ritch serves as TTI's data entry
operator, the district's ParaPro
examiner, TTI's student council
sponsor, school photographer and
is the certifying official for the


Department of Veteran's Affairs,
counseling with military personnel
concerning the educational
opportunities at TTI.
When the nominating committee
recommended Ritch, Industry
Service Coordinator Izell
Montgomery said that "Ritch has
demonstrated time and time again,
her ability to analyze data and that
she possesses in-depth knowledge


and understanding of high-tech
systems, which the school
utilizes.
"She has consistently maximized
and fully reported information to
the Florida Department of
Education (DOE); therefore,
ensuring that TTI is receiving
maximum financial funding due
from them. Jan also enters data for
the Taylor Learning Center.


This is just another example of her
being a team player, to ensure the
overall success of the school
district.
"Furthermore, she is one of the
few ParaPro examiners (for
surrounding counties), where
people can qualify for non-
instructional positions in Florida
schools in accordance with the No
Child Left Behind requirements.
"She is very accommodating and
always willing to meet the
scheduling needs of her clients,
even if it means testing on the
weekends.
"She is directly involved with
our student body as the student
council sponsor. Under her


leadership, the student council has
been involved in numerous service
learning activities impacting the
lives of our students, community
and many others, including
Hurricane Katrina victims.
"They sponsor activities
supporting our Special Needs
Adult Program (SNAP) students;
provide Thanksgiving baskets to
needy students and families during
Thanksgiving; and they sponsored
a food and other items drive for
Katrina victims, gathering and
packing hundreds of donated
items.

Prostitution, drugs, guns being

These are some of the reasons
why law enforcement is stepping
up surveillance, patrols and arrests
at the Skylark Motel--"Perry's
current premiere hotbed of illegal
activity," according to Perry Police
Department (PPD) Lt. Jamie
Cruse.
A recent arrest of a man selling
crack cocaine there and just
recently, another subject arrested
for having and firing a gun on the
premises was the last straws.
"The people in that area are
constantly calling us, complaining,
about all the illegal activity going
on there," said Cruse. "They are
tired of it and so are we.
"PPD is considering alternative
ways of taking care of the public
nuisance which has been created at


the Skylark, such as enhanced
patrols. The more visible we are,
the less illegal activity will take
place.
"We are taking i, non-
reactionary stand to the pioblm.
"Prostitution and dru-, Jdeiling
go on during the daytime, to a
certain extent, but as soon as night
begins falling, the mentality of the
residents of that motel starts
falling," Cruse said.
"It's just gotten out of hand and
we're going to step it up," said
Taylor County Joint Drug Task
Force (JTF) member PPD Det.

confidential informants and we're
going to use them more and more.
Our surveillance equipment is also
going to be working overtime.

When I walked into The Fair Store on Tuesday I
was transported back to the early forties when I was
a small child. Oh, the appearance of the
merchandise was different but the warm friendly
atmosphere was basically the same. And to add to
the feeling of deja vu coming straight toward me
with a familiar smile on his face was Mr. Glickman.
Not just any Mr. Glickman, no, I'm talking about the
same Mr. Glickman that was straight out of my
childhood years when mama would make her semi-
annual trip to the store for our winter and summer
shoes.
As Mr. Glickman greeted me, my soul was flooded
with a zillion memories. I told him I was on an
.investigative errand to see if my memories were
correct.. concerning the longevity of his
establishment. He broadened his smile and assured
me that my memory had not failed. "Yes," said Mr.
Glickman, "this is the same store, in the same
location that you shopped at when you were a
child."
Turning in all directions at once I began to name
exactly the spot that I must have sat as I would try
on the beautiful patent-leather shoes. "All your
*shoes.were over to the right of the store," I said. As
he nodded his head in agreement I felt the
memories of childhood settled over me with a
contentment connected to coming home.
Mr. Glickman told me that his dad, who was an
immigrant from Lithuania, had arrived in Taylor
County in 1925. He said that he had traveled from
New York to Savannah, Ga. While in Savannah the
elder Mr. Glickman had found his bride and with
the purchase of the store in Florida, they had
established their family business. The present Mr.
Qlickman said he began his career as a storekeeper
shortly after returning home from World War II in
1946. As he shared his memories with me I felt

him. As we chatted 'the time seemed incredibly
short only ending when a customer entered the
store and Mr. Glickman, ever the ,pleasant
proprietor, turned to ask, "May I help you?"
Leaving, I sifted through the emotions that
connected me to 'the store that I only visited
perhaps twice a year. I don't think it was entirely the
new shoes; it must have had more to do with
,-lesson'.;in responsibility that mama was teaching
:s. Most of the time we Taylor County children ran
barefoot, so a new pair of shoes was regarded with
Sthe utipst respect.
I never felt deprived, we just didn't see the
, necessity of wearing shoes all the time. But, shoes
Were required on Sundays and, of course, they were
needed when you started' to school. Other than
:those imnes, no one gave them much thought. As I
r4mermbered the smell and feel of the shiny new
shoes, J wondered at the memory for an item that
..iost folks take for granted nowadays. They were so
special that I usually was reluctant to part with
them. In fact, I remember that unknown to mama
(or so I thought) I would sneak up during the night
and slip them on under the covers. Making sure
that I did it quietly, I would tap them together to
hear the "ding" sound of the heels as they tapped
-"gairisf each other. Ding...ding...ding, until finally
sleep'would come. When morning arrived I would
',ever- so carefully remove the shoes and place them
on the floor beside the bed. This routine would
continue for several days. Another routine involved
a cold leftover biscuit. Somehow I came up with the
idea that a cold biscuit was just the perfect thing to
keep the shine on my shoes. So, ever so often, I
would make sure that I saved a biscuit from the
supper table. I would examine the shoes for possible
stains or scratches; if I found any, I would rub the
biscuit over and over the spot until I was satisfied
with the results. I suppose it was the oil that
produced the shine and it probably didn't remove
the scratches but it was enough to satisfy a child.
My family will tell you that for years I clung to the
theory that a black pair of shoes and a white pair of
shoes were sufficient for all your needs. But alas, I
too was finally bitten by the fashion bug that has
produced shoes in every color found in the crayon
box. Along with this addition of shoes comes the
need for an outfit to match the shoes or, vice-versa,
shoes to match the outfit. Then you have the
challenge of finding a space to store all the shoes.
With the current trend of more and more colors of
shoes finding their way to my house, I am beginning
to wonder if less is better since I still feel the
responsibility of taking care of my shoes taught to
me so well by mama. And, all the decisions about
matching the colors can be downright frustrating.
Most of all I am extremely thankful I no longer have
the desire to sleep with my new shoes, but if by
chance that returns...I'm back to the basics of black
and white.

platoon utilizes Strykers, which
according to the Army are "highly
deployable, wheeled armored
vehicles that combine firepower,
battlefield mobility, survivability
ald versatility, with' reduced
logistics requirements."
ARelated by the commendation's
narrative, at approximately 10:30
a.-n., local time, Stephen was
leading his Stryker platoon on
patrol in Eastern Mosul.
'The platoon responded to an
attack against RoughNeck 16, a
sqout weapons team flying in
support of the battalion. They fell
under control of the military police
company commander as they
approached the scene.
Directed to establish blocking
positions in order to keep the
,insurgents from escaping the area,
,Stephen maneuvered his platoon
into route drill.
Stephen's platoon was then
attacked by a suicide vehicle-borne
improvised explosive device
(IED). The blast was so large it
completely destroyed the attacking
vehicle and knocked Stephen
down into his Stryker, bloodying
his nose and giving him a
concussion. His vehicle was
damaged, with all of the driver's
periscopes destroyed and the
remote weapon system rendered
inoperable, the narrative said.
Stephen's M-14 was also
Damaged, but disregarding his
'injuries and the damage to his
,vehicle,, he consolidated his
'platoon, 'assessed his equipment
and injuries, and moved to
transport his injured soldier. Once
there,: he took. another M-14 that
was not being used, quickly passed
his injured soldier to the control of
the first sergeant and moved to an
undamaged vehicle.
Taking control of the remainder
of his platoon, Stephen rallied his
men and moved back to the fight,
where they were exposed to two
more IEDs before the day was
over.


"Lt. Smith's actions clearly
showed the toughness and grit that
great junior leaders show in
combat," the ,narrative said. "His
toughness in the face of an enemy
that committed, suicide trying to
kill him and his men was inspiring
to his soldiers. His actions ensured
that the battalion did not lose the
combat power of his platoon
during a critical point in the
engagement."
The commendation, signed .by
Colonel in Command Stephen J.
Townsend, awards Stephen Smith
for "exceptionally valorous
achievement during Operation
Iraqi Freedom. Second Lt. Smith's
heroic actions during combat
operations in the City of Mosul
contributed to the overwhelming
success of his unit's mission.
Leading from the front in spite of
his injuries, he kept his platoon in
the fight during the critical
moments of battle. His bravery is
in keeping with the finest
traditions of military heroism and
reflect distinct credit upon him, the
patriotic battalion, the Arrowhead
Brigade .and the United States
Army."
Michael has continued to give
updates about his son to the Perry
Rotary Club, which adopted his
entire platoon shortly before this
attack.
Care packages, letters and
supplies have been leaving Perry
for Iraq every few weeks with a,
massive mailout at Christmas. The
latest batch was just sent in
anticipation of Valentine's Day.
"We can't imagine the effect on
the morale of the soldiers when
they receive these items," Michael
said.
Stephen's platoon has since been
relocated to Baghdad and was part
of the massive fighting reported in
that area recently against more
than 200 insurgents,
"So, what is it like' in a typical
day?" Stephen recently posted on
his blog (gatorlt,Plogspot.com). "I
will attempt to summarize my
experience, but it really won't do it
justice.,
"Business as usual; suddenly a
big mission comes up. You have
little time. Sleep, which is


obviously not the priority, tends to
not exist. A few hours, restless I
might add, full of thoughts on what
you missed or what you need to
review in the morning. The
morning is a fight to wake up,
coupled with a sharp nervousness.
You're set, boom. (This signifies
you starting the actual mission.)
"From there it is easy. You're in
the zone. Nerves are fine. You're
talking to people, working plans on
the fly, adapting, constantly
monitoring the situation. Change
of mission, you roll to an area you
have never seen and master it.
Change of mission, you're jumping
from roof to roof. Change of


mission, your talking to more
people, constantly adapting,
changing what you do, planning on
the fl'y.
"You're there, you're focused.
You get back. Everyone is quiet on
the ride back. Could be exhaustion.
You return and sit down.
Everything hits, you crash. The
pain from that fall when you
misjudged the jump, the fact that
you should have drunk more water,
but forgot.
"Its almost relaxing. Its feels
good in a way. A sense of
accomplishment. Just a few
thoughts. Tomorrow is another
day."

Holden, Bowden to wed

in April 14th ceremony
Mr. and Mrs. Gary Holden announce the engagement of their daughter,
Sandy, to Ronnie Bowden, son of Sandra Bowden of Leesburg, Ga., and
the late Jimmy Bowden.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Hamp and Iona Walker of Shady
Grove, Elsie Holden of Perry and the late Lawrence Holden.
-She is a 1996 graduate of Taylor County High and 1997 graduate of
North Florida Community College. Miss Holden received a real estate
license in January, 2005, specializing in new home construction and is
currently employed with Superior Distributing in Albany, Ga.
The prospective groom is the grandson of the late Russell and Dorothy
Holland, and the late S.J. and Ruby Bowden, all of Albany. He is father of
three children, Jason and Hunter of Albany, and the late Shannon Bowden.
He is a 1982 graduate from Monroe High and 1983 graduate, from
Albany Technical College where he specialized in automotive paint and
body. He took an early retirement as lieutenant from the Albany Fire
Department after 21 years of service to pursue automotive restoration
work. He is currently employed with the Speed Shop in Albany, where the
couple will reside.
The couple will marry on April 14, 2007, at 6 p.m. in New Home Baptist
Church of Perry. No local invitations will be sent; all friends arid family
are invited to attend. A reception will follow immediately at the New
Home Family Life Center.

Ketring said she is "thrilled" that
law enforcement -is taking such a
"strong stand."
"It's not just the residents of the
Skylark which are being hurt by all
the bad things going on there," she
said, "it's everyone in the area.
When the neighbors get tired of it
and start complaining, it's time to
do something.
"We took a tough stand on the


crack/prostitution house at the
intersection of Wilder and Dundee
streets a couple of weeks ago. The
owner of that house has already
heard from us, and will soon be
hearing from the courts.
"This city, with the help of law
enforcement, 'is taking back our
streets. Our strict 'no tolerance for
drugs' stand is going forward. This
should be a warning to other
businesses or individuals who
cater to drug dealers and
prostitutes--you could be next."

Women gather Saturday at First Baptist


What do you know about 'Intentional Living?'
The 2007 Women's Conference will be held Saturday at First Baptist
Church, featuring as keynote speaker, Diane Tuttle of Woodstock, Ga.
'Intentional Living" is the theme of the conference, which gets underway

2007, at Doctors' Memorial
Hospital following an extended
illness. He was 91.

chapel of Joe P. Bums Funeral
Home. Interment will follow at
Pineview Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Gunter was born Oct. 27,
1915, in Perry. He was
predeceased by his parents, John
Lloyd and Bessie Gertrude
(Wright) Gunter, a sister, Lettie,
and three brothers, Barney,
MacHugh and Brownie Gunter.
He is survived by his wife of 65
years, Alice Verdie (Winstead)
Gunter; a daughter, Glenda Gunter
Hamby of Perry and Tallahassee;
twO sons and their wives, John
William "Bill" and Maggie Gunter,
and Eustis Thomas "Tom" and
Carol Gunter, all of Perry; seven
grandsons, Walter P. and Jessica
Hamby of Alachua, Bryan and
Rachel Gunter of Columbus, Ga.,
Steve Gunter of Moncks Corner,
S.C., Daryll and Dawn Gunter,

He was a member of the Free
and Accepted Masons Perry Lodge
Number 123, where he was a Past
Worshipful Master and later a Past
District 8 Deputy Grand Master.
He was a 33rd degree Mason who
was given honorary membership in
all of the District 8 lodges as well
as honorary 'membership in other
Florida lodges. Additionally, he is
a past president of the Perry Shrine
Club and holds membership in the
York Rite, Scottish Rite, and the
Marzuk Shrine Temple.
He retired from Buckeye,

Teen summit set Saturday

hosting a teen summit this Saturday, Feb. 10, at Sweet

Feb. 17 bike run benefits Davis


A benefit for Billy Davis of Shady Grove has been
planned for Saturday, Feb. 17. Davis has been
diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing
radiation treatments in Tallahassee.
"Billy is unable to work at this time, expenses are

make this a successful day," organizers said.

The Academy Awards are getting ever closer so it's "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Queen." "The Queen" won

17, at 7 p.m. as part of the 19th annual Live! At Dowling Park Artist Series. Earlier in the!
day, from 3 to 4:30. p.m., the choir will conduct a Youth Leadership Workshop with free
admission to boys and girls ages eight to 18. Workshop admission is free. Participants in the"
workshop will receive a complimentary ticket to the concert.

The 19th annual Live! At
Dowling; Park Artist Series at
Advent ..Christian Village (ACV),
will host The Boys' Choir of
Tallahassee (BCT) on Saturday,
Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. in The -Village
Church.
From 3 to 4:30 p.m. on that day,
the BCT, will conduct a Youth
Leadership Workshop that will
focus on three major topics: self
discipline, cooperation and respect
for others and respect for one's
self. :
This workshop is open to boys
and girls between the ages of eight
and 18. Workshop admission is
free. Participants in the workshop
will receive a complimentary
ticket to the concert.-- -
Sponsored by the Florida State
University School of Social Work,
the BCT is a community outreach
program for boys who come from
all public and private schools
throughout the Tallahassee area
that "prepares them for the 21st
century through music, discipline,
and academic excellence."
The choir program, which began.
in August 1995, focuses its efforts
on counseling and tutoring choir
members, giving them new
structure and a goal: college.
"Music is the tool we use to get
them into boys' choir," said BCT
Director Dr. Earle Lee Jr. "Once
we get them in and get them
singing, we structure them
academically. It does not matter
how well they sing, once they
finish that last note, they must be
able to pass a standardized test and
get into college.


"Our goal is to help these young
men be whatever they want to be in
life," Lee added.
"The sky is the limit for the
boys."
The BCT web site,

since its first member graduated in
May 1998, all of its seniors
have graduated and are on
scholarships at a major college or
university.
With its motto, "No Excuses,"
the BCT continues to grow in
popularity on the local, state,
national and international level.
The choir has performed at
churches, convention halls,
nursing homes, group homes and
--juvenile-- correctional- facilitie-s
throughout the United States and
abroad.
The choir has also performed at
the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C., and represented
the City of Tallahassee in the All-
America City Competition in
Philadelphia, Pa. Moreover, the
BCT participated in the
International Music Festival in
Freeport, Bahamas, and was
selected to represent the State of
Florida at the Millennium
celebration in. Italy.
The BCT is also part of Oprah
Winfrey's "Angel Network."
According to Oprah, "This
renowned choir isn't just making
beautiful music--it's saving boys
from a dangerous life on the
streets."

Off to the Daytona 500!

John Wayne Williams will be leaving "the logging woods"
behind and heading to the Daytona 500, after winning a pair
of tickets in a recent drawing held by Ware Oil & Supply
Company. Williams, who is employed by H.B. Tuten Logging,
Inc., entered the contest at the WACO #21 Pepperheads-
location. He is shown accepting the tickets from Ware Oil's
Doug Everett. A second pair of tickets was awarded to Larry
Johns, another logger who is employed with R.H. Fox
Logging, Inc. Johns was chosen in the Huddle House drawing.
The tickets are valued at $270 per set.
