'nuisance'
The owners of an abandoned
house, located at the intersection
of Dundee and Wilder streets, was
notified in November that the City
of Perry had designated it as a
public nuisance. They were given
30 days to abate the problem--and
as that deadline passes--have taken
no action.
An attorney for the owners, who
live in Miami, contacted the city,
asking for an extension until Jan.
31.

Doctors' Memoriall Hospital
(DMH) is experiencing cash flow
problems, but with the recruitment
of several doctors the financial
situation can be turned around.
That was the message from the
DMH Board of Directors to a joint
meeting of the Taylor County
Commission and Perry City
Council held recently.
Bolstered by a positive audit
report for the period ending May
31,/2006, they blamed the recent
downward turn on the departure of
three doctors from the hospital last
summer.
/ beginning the meeting with a
report from the auditing firm
Draffin & Tucker, LLP, CPA
Jeffrey S. Wright called the
previous year a "tremendous
improvements."
Net patient services were up and
bad debt was down, Wright said of
the period June 1, 2005, to May
31, 2006.
When compared to eight other
rural hospitals over the same
period, DMH had the second best
improvement in operational
margin and the best bad debt
percentage.
Interim CEO Terri Parsons then
took over the presentation,
updating the commission and
council on the hospital's
difficulties after the end of the
audited period.
"No one is more aware that we
don't have money than we are,"
Parsons said.
The hospital, she said, has
"Antinued programs to move
private pay patients to charity,
stating "we're better off putting
people in charity if the. qualify,".."
They have also worked to get
private pay patients on payment
plans with 65 percent of those
making timely payments.
The biggest problem facing the
hospital since last summer, she
said, has been the loss of three
doctors: Firas A. Hamdan, Tulio
Sulbaran and Ronald Barrette.
"We're talking about $2 million
in cash for the hospital," Parsons
said.
The hospital has. ramped up
recruiting efforts with a number of
doctors scheduled to be
interviewed in the coming weeks,
including a cardiologist,
radiologist, a general surgeon and
several internists, she said.
"There has been more recruiting
in the last three months than in the
last year," DMH Board Chairman
Wayne Jones said.
City Council member Doug
Everett asked what efforts the
hospitals were taking to retain the

Brown gets high marks from
council on job performance
City Manager Bob Brown
earned high marks on his first
performance evaluation conducted
by the Perry City Council since he
took office in December 2005.
Council members rated his
overall job performance at 2.43
(out of a possible 3). A summary of
the individual evaluation scores
was presented to the council at its
Jan. 23 regular meeting. The final
results were based on a rating key
of 1-3 (1, not satisfactory; 2, good;
and 3, exceptional).
-Sonny and Bobbie Jean Lollis, along with their pet "Buck,"
share a log cabin built on the original homestead site of
Bobbie Jean's grandparents, Ferd and Carrie Sapp. They are
the developers behind a new gated community named in honor
of the Sapps.
Gated community
caters to seniors
Developers have announced plans for Perry's first fully gated
community for seniors 55 and older.
Carrie's Heritage Village, named in honor of Taylor County pioneer
Carrie Sapp, will be located at the comer block of Puckett Road and
LaCour Lane.
Sapp's granddaughter, Bobbie Jean Lollis, and her husband, Sonny, are
the driving force behind the project.
"I lived with my grandparents until I was 14. When we first started
talking about doing this project, I knew I wanted to dedicate it to their
memory," Bobbie Jean said.
The community will have 66 units tailored to meet the needs of its
senior residents, including custom cabinets and numerous specialized

Councilman Don Cook, whose
overall approval rating for Brown
was 2.63, noted in his evaluation
comments, "Mr. Brown delivered
to the council a balanced, first draft
budget. He provided council with a
cash flow projection and
expenditure proposals that met all
operational needs of city
government. He did this
objectively. Mr. Brown has been
extremely effective in developing
a positive relationship with our
county government officials, those
elected and those appointed. There
is now an increased willingness on
both sides to partner our two
governments where projects and
services can be enhanced or
produce economies for all citizens
of our county."
Councilman Alphonso Dowdell,
who gave Brown the highest
overall score with a rating of 2.95,
had this to say of the city manager:
"He is a listener as well as a doer.

Shuttle service takes
,M.A Centerstage at hearing
While property tax reform,
county budget requests and the
appointment of relatives were all
issues raised during the Legislative
Delegation held here Monday, the
issue that filled the County
Courthouse Annex was the
"disadvantaged" shuttle service
and its funding problems.
State Representative Will
Kendrick and Senator Nancy
Argenziano were present Monday
for their annual town hall meeting
with the citizens of Taylor County
before the legislative session
begins March 6.
"Love and caring go hand and
hand," County Commission Pat
Patterson said while describing the
benefits of the shuttle program.
She also presented a petition
with more than 360 signatures in
support of the shuttle.
The two legislators said they
would see what could be done to
help.
"Fifty thousand dollars is a drop
in the bucket' to help so many
people," Argenziano said.
Kendrick added his support, but
asked why the issue had not been
brought to them sooner, suggesting

citizens not to wait for a meeting
and instead contact his office right
away with issues of such
importance.
Commission Chairman Malcolm
Page joined with the legislators
adding his concern over impending
property tax reform.
"If you reduce revenue. offer us
a replacement," Page asked.
County Administrator Jack
Brown listed the county's budget
requests, including the shuttle
program, improvements to the
county courthouse and Forest
Capital Hall, canal dredging at
Keaton Beach and funds to
purchase property for the Keaton
Beach boat ramp and the proposed
Steinhatchee boat ramp.
Commissioner Clay Bcthea
addressed the legislators, adding
he was speaking for himself and
not the commission when he asked
them to consider the restrictions on
the selection of relatives on boards
appointed by the commission.

doctors the hospital already has.
Jones said they needed to
improve their efforts, but added
that the three doctors' departures
were beyond their control.
Hamdan left to be with his family
in Lebanon; Sulbaran left
because DMH does not offer
invasion cardiology surgery and he
wanted to maintain his skills;
and Barrette "we had concerns
about," Jones said.
Everett pressed hospital officials
for a time table on when
the hospital must have
new doctors in place before
the financial situation becomes
critical'.
While Jones and Parsons were
hesitant at first, to give a definite
date, she said, "By April, if we
don't have recruitment it will be
very hard for me to hold off our

If that was the case, the hospital
would have to move to "Plan B,"
which as the two explained was to
approach, the county for funding
assistance.
Parsons said, however, the
hospital was making its
payroll.
As of December, she said the
outstanding accounts payable for
the hospital was $1.7 million, with
$500,000 due for more than 90
days.
. "Our vendors have been
working with us," Jones said.
The hospital is also preparing to
begin its search for a new CEO to
replace Rick Brown, who was fired
by the board in December. They
cited Brown's lack of a local
residence as their reason for the
firing.
Commissioner Pat Patterson
expressed her appreciation .for the
DMH board 'and the job it was
doing.
"We need to speak positives,"
she said, turning to the audience.
"We have issues. We will work on
them. We don't need to bring
stumbling blocks to bring about
failure.
"We don't want to live in Perry
and Taylor County without a
hospital," she added. "This should
be a team effort."

classroom environment for my
students in order to maintain high
standards and goals. I dedicate my
life and volunteer as many hours as
I can, to help make each year the
best it can be. I love being part of
the teaching profession!"
When asked what changes she
would make to the educational
system, Becht said, "I would
change the pressures of testing
being placed upon students. This
testing affects success and failure
and is used as evaluation tools for
placement to higher levels.
"Too much emphasis on testing,
places pressure on students who
are not able to perform at their best
in the testing environment rather
than on student progress," Becht
said.
"Consideration should be given
to the students who do not perform
better under 'pressurized time
testing situations.' Tests do not
always measure students' true
ability levels and academic
potential.
"Given the world we live in, we
observe adults as well as our
children dealing with stress and
anxieties relating to school and
work performance.
"We need to instill in our
students the importance of
remaining cool, calm and
collected, and to relax and enjoy
life and be proud of their life
achievements." Becht said.
"We must prepare our students
of today to cope with the world of
tomorrow." she added.
"Performances on tests are not
always indicative of a student's
highest potential. In summary
family and community involves all
facets of the teaching profession.
Teachers must be role models for
family,. communities and our'
children who see us in their little
eyes as role models."

FMPA honored by Risk magazine
The "Florida Municipal Power

large stake in the proposed Taylor
Energy Center here, was named
"Municipal Risk Manager of the
Year" in Risk magazine's 2007
awards.
Risk magazine cited FMPA's
risk management program as
"conservative but sophisticated"
and recognized FMPA's ability to
"tactically hedge when markets are
favorable." FMPA's 2006 risk
management highlights include the
successful implementation of a
program to hedge interest rates on
$700 million to finance the
proposed coal-fired power plant in
Taylor County and a strategic
portfolio for natural gas hedges.
"We began our risk management
program in 2001 to reduce
volatility in natural gas prices,"
said Roger Fontes, general
manager and CEO. "Today, we are
fostering the development of a risk
management culture throughout
the FMPA organization."
"This award is a testament to the
strength of FMPA's overall
approach to risk management,"
said Mark Larson, assistant general
manager, CFO and risk manager.
"Risk management is everyone's
job at FMPA. A successful
program requires wide
participation and a strong,

features, Sonny said.
Plans include a pool, club house and small medical station.
"There will also be a large room for social events," Bobbie Jean
said.
The couple drew on the idea from similar developments near their
home in South Florida.
"We really had no intention of ever moving back to Perry. However,
when Sonny's dad was in the nursing home, he was up here visiting a
lot. That's when he saw that the property where my grandparents used
to live was for sale. He contacted the realtor, and made an offer,"
Bobbie Jean said.
The couple built a log cabin on the original foundation footers of
the old homestead.
"My grandparents never owned they land--they sharecropped it for
Mr. Puckett."
The Lollises acquired the other property surrounding the cabin with
a thought of letting their sons develop it in the future.
"But Sonny said let's do something now. The next thing I knew, we
were clearing land and here we are," she said.
"The community will have just one entrance and exit. There will be
manned security at the gate 24/7, so if someone is coming to visit,
they will first have to get clearance from the guard," Sonny said.
Permitting is on-going and Lollis said he hopes to begin
construction by October of this year with a tentative completion date
of late 2008.

team's yard sale. Laura Taylor will
be in charge of food for breakfast
and lunch. Members who can help
are asked to contact Shiver or
Taylor.
Cheryl Gregory reviewed a list
of "officers" and their
responsibilities for the group. She
then surveyed the ladies
concerning the best date for the
April meeting. "Relay For Life is
on our usual meeting date. We
need to choose a date for both our
usual meeting and for celebrating
the anniversary of the Red Hat
Society. Meeting before Relay
would be helpful for turning in any
last-minute things concerning
Relay For Life." A date was
selected and two ladies
volunteered to plan for April.
Patricia Lindsey, chair of prizes
and tickets for the group's spring
fundraiser, listed the three prizes
being offered. Tickets will be
ready for the next meeting.
Members can then get tickets to
sell for $1 each. Lindsey has
arranged the dates and times to
offer the team's tickets outside
Winn-Dixie.
Debi Limoges, secretary-
treasurer, reported the amount of
funds at the end of 2006 and the
cost of the 2006 float. "Our last
float cost less because we were
able to use some materials from
our first float," added Limoges.
A variety of entrees were
enjoyed--grouper,, shrimp and
deviled crab among the specialties,

cheesecake, and rich coconut pie.
Shiver rang the Red Hat bell and
asked for any announcements.
Nancy Simons shared a
photograph of Red Hatters in
Hawaii, sent to her by her
granddaughter. She also displayed
a three-dimensional framed Red
Hat that one of her daughters
designed for her.
Laura Taylor led the ladies as
they sang "Happy Birthday" to
Alice Brady who showed it was
her birth month by wearing a
purple hat and red outfit.
Door prizes, furnished by the
hostesses, were won by Jeanne
Hilgendorf, Barbara Patrick, lona
Walker, Cheryl Gregory, June
Lytle, Alice Brady, Jeanne
Raulerson and Thelma Birdwell.
These prizes included a red, heart-
shaped dish, Red Hat bracelets and
pins, and Red Hat stationery.
The ladies applauded the
January committee for planning
this wonderful time. "Mark your
calendar for Feb. 24 so you can be
with us," encouraged Queen
Mother Hattie Adams.

NUISANCE
Continued from page 1
City Manager Bob Brown.
"Rampant drugs and prostitution
are the name of the game when it
comes to that house and the city is
taking a tough stand."
Brown said he met with the city
attorney Thursday and it was
decided to file a complaint with the
court, within 10 days, asking for a
hearing.
"We will then ask for the judge
to make a ruling on the public
nuisance problem," Brown said.
"He will have several options,
including allowing the city to go in
and abate the problem and bill the
owner, placing a lien on the
property for the amount of the
clean-up. He could also order the
owners to forfeit the property, after
which the city would go in and
clean up ourselves. Either way, we
want something done to that place
and other properties which are on
their way to being named public
nuisances. We are firm and very
serious on this matter."

Crowe went on to say,
"Continued strong cash flow

With elite fashion, the Taylor
County High girls basketball team
downed Madison Tuesday night in
the district semi-finals
competition. The ladies left for
home with a stunning 50-21
victory leaving their record at 14-
10.
So what awaits these semi-final
champions? The Lady Bulldogs
will travel to compete against last
year's district champs, Florida
High, this Saturday.
The first quarter in Tuesday's
game was an early sign of victory
as the girls jumped to an 8-2 lead
in the first five minutes. As the
game continued to unfold, the
Dawgs never let the Cowboys get
an even score, let alone get ahead.
This loss for Madison left their
record at 14-12, closing their route
to the finals.
The girls were elated to win
their first step towards the District
Championship.
"We played as a team and we
didn't give up," said Senior
Japhnee Thomas. "We made less
turnovers and more points."
Thomas was extremely proud to
have made all of her lay-ups while
contributing 12 points overall to
the team.
Senior Porche King was the
high scorer in this battle against
Madison, mustering 18 points, 10
of which were scored in the first
quarter. Although her game play
was exceptionally well, King was
still not satisfied with the overall
efforts of the team.
"Next time I hope.we will work
harder on offense and defense and
play more as a team than we did,"
explains King.
The team has been reshaped this
season through some abrupt
changes but things appear to be
working out.
Jordan Wiggins is a newcomer
to the team this year after moving
to a new school.
"Jordan just came and I'm
amazed that she just fit right in
with the program," said Coach
Sylvester Bellamy.
Wiggins was indeed a great
addition to the team contributing 5
points to the team's district
victory..
"Last night we played more as a
team. We were more competitive
because Madison is our biggest
rival," explains Wiggins. "Since
this school has not won the
district tournament in a long
while, everybody wants to make a
change so that we could be noticed
in the future and promote girls'
sports."
This year the varsity girls' team
has four seniors. -- Japhnee
Thomas, Robin Jackson, Cierra
Sparrow and Porche King.
"I was afraid that Madison
would come back because they did
that last year," admits Senior
Cierra Sparrow, "but in the end
I'm glad that we came out on
top."
Sparrow has been on varsity
ever since she was a freshman and
this game brought many
sentimental feelings as she realized
that for her last year, she was
leaving in style.
"It felt good to win because its
our last year and we want to make
a big difference before we leave
this school," she said.
The ladies were proud to have
shut Madison out in the fourth
quarter with impenetrable defense
and still managing to basket 13
points. Senior Robin Jackson was
recognized by Coach Bellamy as
playing outstanding defense even
after recovering from a sprained
ankle.
"We had good defense. We shut

them down to where thay couldn't
score," says Jackson. "We worked
hard, hustled and had fun. I love
all my teammates," she added.
Jackson even managed to score
9 points which included a superb
3-point shot to help crumble
Madison's chances.
"It was fun. I was able to show
my different capabilities on the
court," comments Jackson.
Other scorers for the Lady
Dawgs were Chelsea Sparrow and
Sharika Ellis both with 2 points.
After the end buzzer rang, the
ladies excitedly huddled on the
court and lifted Japhnee Thomas
who suffered a leg cramp in the
fourth quarter. It was sweet victory
for the team and it's been a long
time coming.
Cofch Bellamy is proud of the
team's accomplishments and is
confident that they can go further
in the competition.
"I think they played great as a
team-they really wanted it," the
coach said. "It's been a long time
since this county's girls'
basketball team has stepped up to
this level and a number of years
since we've been in district, but. I
am truly proud of them."

This February 2 will be a year
when God called you home. I wish r
I could have went with you, but it
was not my time, but we will meet
again soon. I know you will be
there waiting on me because our
love will never die for each other. I
think of you all the time. I miss you so
much because my love for you will never
die. I wish you were still here. I miss every-
thing we did together. Just remember I will
always think of you and love you. I just want you

Citywide Mission meets Sunday
By B.D. WILLIAMS
"His Will"
For years I searched for
happiness in worldly things and
nothing less. My prayers to God
were just my will; I asked if he
would my dreams fulfill. My heart
and mind endured the test until I
learned his will was best. He stood
by waiting patiently for me to learn
and grow, to see.
I know now while it took me
long, my way seemed best, my will
was strong. But more and more I
couldn't cope; I felt depressed and
lost my hope. My prayers one night
were just his will, I felt relieved, I'd
climbed the hill. His love so
brightly lit my way, my faith grew
stronger every day. Each time I felt
I had a doubt, I'd go to him to work
it out. It's great to know his willfor
me is peace, love and serenity. As
you kneel do\t n tonight to pray,
just ask his will to guide your way.
I delight to thy will, Oh my God,
Thy law is within my heart.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
BLACK CONFEDERATE HERITAGE
This fact sheet is prepared by the Sons of Confederate
Veterans Education Committee for distribution to professors,
teachers, librarians, principals, ethnic leaders, members of
the press, and others interested in promoting an
understanding of Black contributions to United States
history. The SCV hopes this information will enrich the
celebration of Black History Month during February. This
sheet may be freely copied and distributed without
permission or notice; if republished in part or whole, please

"There are at the present moment, many colored men in the
Confederate Army doing duty...as real soldiers, having muskets
on their shoulders and bullets in their pockets..,." Frederick
Douglas, former slave & abolitionist (Fall, 1861)
How many? Easily tens of thousands of blacks served the
Confederacy.as laborers, teamsters, cooks and even as soldiers.
Some estimates indicate 25% of free blacks and 15% of slaves
actively supported the South during the war.
Why? Blacks served the South because it was their home, and
because they hoped for the reward of patriotism; for these reasons
they fought in every war through Korea, even though it meant
defending a segregated United States.
Emancipation? President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation
did not free a single slave. Issued at a time when the Confederacy
seemed to be winning the war, Lincoln hoped to transform a
disagreement over secession into a crusade against slavery, thus
preventing Great Britain (and France) from intervening on the
side of the South. The proclamation allowed slavery to continue
in the North as well as in Tennessee and large parts of Louisiana
and Virginia. It applied only to Confederate-held slaves, which
Lincoln had no authority over, but not to slaves under Federal
control.
Lincoln's Views? "I am not in favor of making voters or jurors
of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office...." 9/15/1858
campaign speech "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to
interfere with the institution of slavery...."3/4/1861 First Inaugural
Address "Iam a little uneasy about the abolishment ofslavery in
this District [of Columbia]...."' 32411862 letter to Horace Greeley
Blacks Today: Nelson W. Winbush, a retired educator and
SCV member, lectures on his black Confederate ancestor, Private
Louis N. Nelson. A black Chicago funeral home owner, Ernest A.
Griffin, flies the CSA battle flag and erected at his own expense
a $20,000 monument to the 6,000 Confederate soldiers who are
buried on his property, once site of the Union prison Camp
Douglas. Black professor Leonard Haynes (recently deceased)
of Southern University (Baton Rouge) spoke regularly on black
Confederates. American University's professor Edward Smith
also lectures on the truth of black Confederate history and, with
Nelson W. virnbus.h, has prepared an educational videotape
entitled "Black Southern Heritage." (available at (954) 963-4857)

"If I could save the Unipn wif ,ot fpfgt aqy VAye I would do

Confederate: Famed bridge engineer and former slave Horace
King received naval contracts for building Confederate warships.
A black servant named Sam Ashe killed the first Union officer
during the war, abolitionist Major Theodore Winthrop. John W.
Buckner, a black private, was wounded at Ft. Wagner repulsing
the U.S. (Colored) 54th Massachusetts Regiment. George
Wallace, a servant who surrendered with General Lee at
Appomattox, later served in the Georgia Senate. Jim Lewis served
General Stonewall Jackson, and was honored to hold his horse
"Little Sorrel" at the general's funeral. Captured black cook Dick
Poplar suffered cruelty by Yankee Negro guards at Pt. Lookout,
MD, for being a "Jeff Davis man."
Union: A daring Robert Smalls engineered theft of the CSS
Planter, presenting itto the Yankee blockading fleet at Charleston.
Black Medal of Honor awardees'Christian Fleetwood and William
Carey bravely carried the banner at Ft. Wagner's assault in 1863.
Colonial: Thefirst man to die for the American cause of freedom
was Crispus Attucks, a black seaman from Boston. At the time of
the American Revolution, New> York City held almost as many
slaves as all of Georgia combined.
Surprising Facts: In St. Louis, General John Fremont freed
slaves of "disloyal* Missouri Confederates, an angry Lincoln fired
him. Slaves in Washington, D.C., were not freed until April 1862,
a year after the war began with the firing at Ft. Sumter. Slavery
continued throughout the entire war in five Union-held states:
DE, MD, WV, KY and MO. The New York City draft riots of July
1863 resulted in the burning of a beautiful black orphanage and
lynching of blacks. A provision in the Confederate Constitution
prohibited the African slave trade outright (unlike the U.S.
Constitution). Encouraged by General Lee, the CSA eventually
freed slaves who would join the army, and did recruit and arm
black regiments. C.S. General Robert E. Lee freed his family
slaves before the war; Union Gen. U.S. Grant kept his wife's
slaves well into the war. Many blacks owned slaves themselves.
In 1861 Charleston, for example, a free colored planter named
. William Ellison owned 70 slaves.

To all family members of Taylor County, or
r a tragic event fell upon one of our
4 Ms: Edna L. Benton, whom many of you know as a little lady with a passion for her
family, for fishing, for her undying faith in Christ, and love for church. Ms. Benton
has lived in Taylor County all her life and- has always tried to help others above
herself. She is now in need of her fellow Taylor Countians' help. Ms. Benton suf-
fered a stroke on Dec. 30, but thatwas only the beginning of her test of faith. One
week later, Ms. Benton suffered a more severe stroke that has since caused partial
paralysis to her right side. Ms. Benton, with her neverending faith and her old-
fashioned Taylor County toughness, is doing much better. While she remains with
partial paralysis, she is in need of your help. During her hospital stay, only two days
after her second stroke she was evicted from her apartment. She is now at Tallahasse
Memorial Rehabilitation Center for stroke victims. While doing better, she may never
be able to live on her own again. She has expressed how much she wants to come
home to Perry and live with her daughter, however, in order for her wish to be granted,
she needs q room built with handicapped restroom facilities and is wheelchair ac-
cessible. We, the family of Edna Benton, ask for our neighbor's.help. Continuing the
therapy that she will need in order to get her back on the riverbank fishing and in
a church on the front row on Sundays and living back at home where she has always
been, means that we need your help. An account has been set up at Wachovia in
L her name. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated. May God bless you all and may God see it through to
have Edna L. Benton home again. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact either

Movies look bet
We're going to take a short break this week on the
Academy Award preview and instead turn our, attention
to the new movies set for release this month. February
offers a significant improvement over last month's slate
of films, where just about all of the good movies were
hold-overs from last year.
Starting off the month is today's release of "Because I
Said So," staring Diane Keaton as a controlling mother
who tries to set up her daughter (Mandy Moore) with the
perfect guy. From the trailers, the romantic comedy
shows promise and with a script by Karen Leigh
Hopkins and Jessie Nelson, who were responsible for
1998's "Stepmom," it could be the first movie in awhile
to really shake up the box office picture,
"Because I Said So" is rated PG-13 for sexual content
including dialogue, some mature thematic material and
partial nudity.
Also opening today is the English-language debut for
Hong Kong directing duo Oxide Pang Chun andDanny
Pang, the horror film, "The Messengers." Set on a farm
in North Dakota, the younger members of the Solomon
family begin to see paranormal phenomena that quickly
become threatening. Word is the productions values are
pretty good for the movie and could raise. "The
Messengers" above the already crowded crop. of horror
films released lately.
"The Messengers" is rated PG-13 for mature thematic
material, disturbing violence and terror.
Next week "Hannibal Rising" opens to the question
of whether movie audiences will accept anyone other
than Anthony Hopkins as the cannibalistic serial killer,
Hannibal Lecter, the role that earned him the Academy
Award for "Silence of the Lambs." This is the first time
in 21 years anyone else has played the part; Brian Cox
played the role in 1986's "Manhunter," re-made with
Hopkins in 2002 as "Red Dragon," .
The new movie tells the story of Lecter's early years
as a child and young adult and the role is filled by
Gaspard Ulliel, a French actor unknown in the U.S. This
time, author Thomas Harris makes his screenWriting
debut adapting his own work for the movie, Along with
Darth Vader, Lecter is Hollywood's ultimate anti-hero,
)- nd fans of the character will be holding "Hannibal
"Rising' to a high standard. As I fan myself, I hope the
taste is just right.
"Hannibal Rising" is rated R for strong grisly violent
content and some language/sexual references.
Also opening next week is Eddie Murphy's "Norbit,"
in which he plays the mild-mannered title character who
is desperately trying to escape his oversized and
overbearing fiance, Rasputia, also played by Murphy.
Other than his role as Donkey in the "Shrek" movies,
Murphy had been in a slump until his award-winning
role in "Dreamgirls." Overweight people must be the last
demographic not to have an organized anti-defamation
league and I guess the filmmakers figured they better get
their shots in before it was too late,
A warning to parents: from what I've read, producers
had to cut footage to earn the movie its PG-13 rating,
which probably means the film is still going to be on the
high end of that rating,
"Norbit" is rated PG-13 for crude and sexual humor,
some nudity and language.
Taking advantage of Valentine's Day, "Music and
Lyrics" opens on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The movie stars
Hugh Grant as a washed-up singer tasked with writing a
song for a new teen star. Only he's never written a song
before. Add Drew Barrymore, whose character has a
way with words,'and not only do you have a potential
song in the making, but also director Marc Lawrence's
("Two Weeks Notice," "Miss Congeniality") latest
romantic comedy.
"Music and Lyrics" is rated PO-13 for some sexual
conterit.
ter in February
Four movies are set to open two days later on Feb. 16
making it the most crowded weekend of the month.
"Ghost Rider," starring Nicholas Cage, is the latest
comic book adaptation to hit the big screen. Cage plays
stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who sold his soul to
save someone he loved. The price he must now pay is
that when confronted by evil, he becomes Ghost Rider,
a living, fiery skeleton.
Not a top-tier title over at Marvel Comics, "Ghost
Rider" does not bring a huge fanbase like Spiderman or
the X-Men, but if the special effects hold up (and for a
film like this they simply have to), the movie could be
the first good popcorn flick of the new year.
"Ghost Rider" is rated PG-13 for horror violence and
disturbing images.
Up next is "Bridge to Terabithia," the story of two
friends, Jesse and Leslie, who with their imagination
create the magical world of Terebithia. When I
previewed the movies of 2007 at the end of last year, I
mentioned this film not realizing I had already'seen an
adaptation of Katherine Paterson's 1978 Newbery
Award-winning children's book. A made-for-television
version was made in' 1985 and I saw it in school. I didn't
recognize it at first because the trailers are either very
misleading or the producers greatly changed the story.
From what I've been able to find out, the former is true
and the grand special effects play only. a small part in the
film. I guess it's a sign of the times when marketers feel
(and rightfully so) that to attract young people to movies
these days they must entice them with eye candy.
Without spoiling it, I have to say the ending is not what
most would expect from a movie such as this, making it
a bittersweet story indeed.
"Bridge to Terabithia" is rated PG for thematic
elements including bullying, some peril and mild
language.
"The Breach," based on a true story, is about FBI
newcomer Eric O'Neill (Ryan Phillippe), who is ordered
to spy on his. boss, Robert Hanssen (Chris Cooper),
suspected of selling secrets to the Soviet Union. The
trailer for the film show hints of great chemistry
between the two actors as they play a battle of wits.
"The Breach" ..^ rated.RG-.1,4.,or violaneasexual
content and languafge.
Finishing up the weekend is the romantic comedy
"Daddy's Little Girls." Director Tyler Perry, know for
his Madea films including "Diary of a Mad Black
Woman" and "Madea's Family Reunion" which he
wrote, directed and starred in as Madea, stays behind the
camera this time around. Gabrielle Union plays. an
attorney who falls in love with a mechanic (Idris Elba)
and single father of three children. The relationship is
tested when Elba's ex-wife renters the picture wanting
to take back her children.
"Daddy's Little Girls" is rated PG-13 for thematic
material, drug and sexual content, some violence and
language..
On Feb. 23, "The Number 23" opens with Jim Carrey
taking on a much more sinister role than moviegoers are
used to seeing qs he. plays a man who becomes obsessed
with the title number after reading a novel of the same
name. The book seems to tell his own life's story, but
tells of tragediesthat have yet to occur. The trailer is
creepy and depicts some great acting from Carrey.
"The Number 23" is rated R.
Also opening Feb. 23 is "The Astronaut Farmer,"
which tells the story of an astronaut.(Billy Bob Thorton)
forced to retire from NASA but unable to give up on his
dream of flying to the stars. Instead he attempts to build
his own rocket on his farm. I have to say, the trailer sold
me the first time I saw it. With its family friendly rating,
the movie could be the surprise hit of the winter season.
"The Astronaut Farmer" is rated PG for thematic
material, peril and language.

Malcolm Hughes Rosyln D. Evans
Two former Taylor Countians in showbiz

Staff writer
Twenty years ago, two students

High School with hopes and

their way up the performing.
ladder, each climbing rung by
rung, getting ever closer to
stardom:
They say there's no business like
show business. For Roslyn D.
Evans and Malcolm Hughes,
they're making it their business.
Evans, who along with Hughes
graduated in' 1987, is perhaps
better remembered amongst her
classmates by her maiden name,
Collins.
For the past eight years, she has
been "plowing my way through the
film industry professionally," she
said.

actress Vivica Fox. She will be
seen in theaters this month with the
release of the romantic comedy,
"Daddy's Little Girls."
Evans has also appeared on the
Greg Behrendt Show and had
parts in the sitcom "October
Road," and the film, "Stomp the
Yard."
She has had the opportunity to
work on various video projects
including a recent appearance in
the gospel video "Jail Bird" with.
Pastor Shirley Ceasar and
"Rainbow" with Vickie Winans.
Other videos include "Sugarland-
Settlin," "Camera Phone," the
"Pool Palace" as well as a host of
others.
Evans is currently working under
the guidance of coach and mentor,
Gregory Alan Williams, best
known for roles in "Bay Watch"
and "Remember the Titans."
She is also working on a
screenplay she hopes to submit to
Rain Forest Films later this year.
Evans is continuing to expand
her talents and is now trying' to
break into the voice-over field. She
is currently auditioning for one of
the voices for the new cartoon,
"The Class of 3000," produced
and created by Andre 3000 of
Outkast.
Evans, said that she pays tribute
to her grandmother, the late Mary
Tawee Dunwood, who helped her
to stay grounded, as well as to her
mother, Maxie Young, who gave
her a start in entertaining people by
allowing her to perform in front of '
Port of Spain. While there, he met
Trinidad's prime minister and the
minister of education.
The day after he arrived in
Trinidad. Hughes and a Bruce
Willis look-alike were forced by
fans and the media to stay inside
their hotel until bodyguards were
hired, he said.
Shortly after the bodyguards
arrived, the local Mercedes
dealership, for publicity, sent two
brand new vehicles, along with
drivers, to be used as long as they
were in the country.
"That was' star treatment at its
finest," Hughes said.
Another memorable assignment
was an appearance in San Juan,
Puerto Rico, last year for an

THE
GATOR PEN
In Memory of Donald Wilson 1958-2005
Editor's Note: Sometimes a story
idea grabs hold of a writer and doesn't le
go. Such is the case of the following
article penned by "Page Turner
Columnist Polly Waller as she shares the
scaly tale of Reptile Land.
Back in the 50s, 60s and into the
70s, "Florida Reptile Land" was
Taylor County's premier tourist
attraction. Or perhaps a more apt
description would be "tourist trap."
Situated nearly 20 miles from
Perry on Hwy 19/27, it stood on
the outskirts of Salem in all its
glory.
:: You knew you were approaching.
Florida Reptile Land long before
your arrival. Roadside signs
littered the highway for miles in
either direction advertising FREE
ADMISSION on big yellow and
red billboards. Admission was not
exactly free. At the end of your
visit, exit was not possible without
passing the "donation" window
(Help Feed the Animals) and then
taking a tour through the gift shop.
And what a gift shop it was! Flocks
6f plastic pink flamingos with
beady glass eyeballs watched the
Bewildered tourists as they
shopped among the t-shirts,
ashtrays, shot glasses and rubber,
shakes. Everything was labeled
"Florida Souvenir" and most of it
was made in China. Pecan logs and
salt water taffy were stacked in
displays that nearly reached the
.cHiling. The snack bar boasted
fresh .orange juice that 'tasted
suspiciously like Tang. The
smell of mustard and hot dogs
pervaded the air, but I never
ate there, probably a good
thing.
Locals simply called Florida
Reptile Land, "The Zoo," which
was appropriate because it housed
more than just reptiles. At the
entrance, before you lodged'
yourself through the turnstiles, was'
a small boxed cage containing a
lone duck and a toy piano. Put a
coin in the slot and the duck would.
play a tune on the piano with his
beak. Then grain would
automatically pour out of a hopper
and the duck would eat
ravenously. Bless his heart.
he was a pitiful soul but he could
play a snazzy tune.
After entering the zoo, the first
order of business- were the
primates. Jake, the head
chimpanzee, was a bad seed. He'd
.spit and snatch anything that came
within reaching distance of his
cage. For a cigarette, he'd do
unspeakable acts. The rest of the
primates followed suit and the
mofikey 'pen usually found its
visitors exclaiming "Oh my!"
while they hurried on past.
Next came the other mammals
which included, at one time or
another, elephants, llamas, goats,
raccoons, black bears, a big cat or
two,.and a myriad of common
vermin such as opossums, squirrels
and armadillos. Then came the
reptiles. The snakes were housed
in glass-fronted cases and were
somewhat dull. Most were
probably caught out back and
didn't have show business in their
blood. They languished behind the
glass, rarely moving,
The real stars of Florida Reptile
Land were the alligators. Penned in
a concrete enclosure surrounded
by chainlink fence, they spent their
days lounging in the tepid, green
water occasionally yawning and

NEW SHRINE
OFFICERS INSTALLED
Illustrious Potentate John
Jelinek of Morocco Temple,
Jacksonville, installed the new
officers of the Perry Shrine Club.
The new officers were: Milton
Moon, president; John L. Bryan,
first vice president; Mack
showing their teeth to impress a
few Yankees. A dive into the pool
to cool off would generate oooos,
aahhs and sometimes applause
from the onlookers. For good luck,
or perhaps as payment for a good
show, visitors to the zoo would
throw change into the water.
Lots of pennies, plenty of nickels,
a few dimes and the occasional
quarter littered the bottom of the
pool.
The inhabitants of the town of
Salem, just a few miles down the
road, were, and still are, an
adventurous lot. My grandparents
lived there during my formative
years and I spent quite a lot of time
hanging out with the local kids.
One Saturday afternoon, down at
Ander's Store, I heard talk of
"robbing the gator pen." Interested,
I listened closely as I heard tell of
the main source of income for the
bravest kids in Salem.
At night, a group of kids would
go over the back fence of the zoo,
then over the chainlink of the gator
pen. Stealthily, they would enter
the pool and collect the change.
Quarters and dimes were sought
after in the dark with a zeal that
would impress even Steve Irwin.
Pennies and nickels were left for
the younger boys. A few times
the gators would balk at the
intrusion, but mostly they shared
the Yankee cash. Nobody
ever got hurt although one
fellow is said to have lost his
britches.
Thirty years later, one of those
same kids, then in his 40s, came in
the bookstore one day. I happened
to have a bowl of change on the
counter and he took one look at it
and said, "Polly, looks like you've
been robbing the gator pen!"
I never participated in the
robbery of the gator pen, but
sometimes I wish I had.

HUNT CMPANY
Editor's Note: The following historical
recollection was first printed in a regional
historical quarterly magazine. During the
winter of 1870-71, a small party of men
came to the panhandle of Florida on an
extended hunting trip. The "company," as
they called themselves, consisted of
Richard D. Edmondson, 22; his uncle
Robert Edmondson (about 45 years old);
Robert's son, Joseph Jones'Edmondson
(about 22); George Dick (age ?); and
Capt. W.L. Brewster (about 40). Crossing
the border into Florida in mid-December,
the company traveled and hunted in
Jackson, Washington and Bay counties
for about five weeks, then proceeded
eastward through Marianna, Quincy and
Tallahassee to their ultimate destination
in the swampy pine woods of southern
Jefferson and Taylor counties.
Jan. 29, Sunday. This morning
we travel again on account of bad
weather. Mr. George D. took a dost
of pills last night. He is a little .
better this morning. Jo is
complaining of a rising in his
hand. Suffers very much with that
and his head aching. Travel on the
St. Augustine road, 6 miles to a
Methodist Church near which
there lives a man who is having
chills and is very much dissatisfied
with Florida. We call him a doctor.
Jan. 30, Monday. From the
white church eastward 16 miles
through flat, piney, palmetto
country. Very few houses and
mostly Negros. Jo is suffering
severely with a rising in the center
of his hand. We are compelled to
take conveyance in the wagon and
on the mules across some swamps.
Lost a few eggs which we had in a
bucket under the wagon, in a deep
creek. Mr. George D. is very much
dissatisfied with the country,
wishes to direct his course for
home. Weather cloudy, a little rain.
Jan. 31, Tuesday. It is still
cloudy, also windy. We are all able
to renew our journey. Jo still
suffers with his hand. We are
directing our course toward Mr.
Chaney's.
Just as a dark cloud can intrude on the brightest
summer day, sorrow comes to us all. I distinctly
remember the first time sorrow touched my life. I
was four years old, and up until that time, my days
had been filled with the wonder and discovery of
childhood. Oh, there were the occasional moments
of drama when mama or daddy would have to
correct me in order to set my feet back on the
straight and narrow, but true gut-wrenching sorrow
had never crossed my path until the day my
Granddaddy Taylor died.
As you know he lived in Nashville, Ga., and our
family visited him on a regular basis so he was a
very important person in my life. My visits to his
house were filled with memories of endless days of
play, laughter and never-ending supplies of
delicious food. Being the- parent of a large family
and a growing number of grandchildren did not
interfere with his ability to make us all feel special.
He did this by simply being there within our reach
should we need him. When mama received the news
of her dad's death she gathered us all close to begin
the grieving process for this very special member of
the Leggett family. What I still remember the most
about the sad time was the closeness that I felt to
my family as we drew strength from the hugs and
kind words that were mingled with tears. Even
though I was one of the youngest I was not excluded
but rather I was allowed to see that death is a part
of our existence. Mama, by her example, showed me
that life has a way of dealing a hurtful blow ever so
often but it can be handled and healing will come as
the sun begins to shine again in your life.
After this initial introduction to sorrow it seems it
was not very long before I was up close to sorrow's
sting again. This time it was during the Christmas
holiday, right in the middle of one -of the greatest
celebrations of life, that death found its way to our
door again. The night was cold so we were huddled
close around the oil heater as preparations were
being made for bedtime when a knock at the front
door sounded. Daddy opened the door and in the
pale light I saw my Uncle Tot and Aunt Slyvia
standing there with their small children. Clutched
in my aunt's arms and wrapped tightly in a blanket
was the smallest member of their family. Mama
rushed forward as if alerted by some unseen clue
that trouble had arrived. I never left my place by the
heater because it seemed that I too could sense that
all was not the same in my world since the door was
opened. Mama took the baby in her arms as the
family joined us near the warmth of the heater. In
the quietness of the next few moments and by the
expression on the adults' faces I knew that I was
once again in the presence of the sorrow that death
can bring. My little cousin died that night and our
family bonded together to grieve his passing. It was
the first time that I was made aware that death
knows no age, it comes to the oldest right down to
the youngest members of our families.
There were to be countless other times during my
growing up that we would draw on the strength that
God supplies when trouble comes. My Grandmother
Morgan's death brought great sorrow when I was a
teen as did the death of my brother Ted and his wife
Lavata just as I was on the brink of adulthood.
Mama and Daddy's strength seemed to never falter
as they led us through these trying times that
seemed to shake the very foundation of our family
structure. During each of the times I watched the
people of Taylor County respond to the needs of our
family. With. great compassion folks would bring
food, send cards and flowers, and most of all, be
there to provide a shoulder to cry on as our family
made its journey safely past the time of death.
The lessons I learned from these times have stood
good as I've had to navigate the rough waters of
sorrow without the assistance of my parents. They
too died but as most of you know they live on in the
things that we do because of their example.
Now as I have the advantage of age that allows me
to look back over a long span of life I can clearly see
that children need to be taught that there is
purpose in all that life offers. Most of us would like
to avoid the days when our laughter is cut short and
the dark clouds of sorrow descend but that would
be like sticking your head in a hole while the world
falls around you. When you come up for air, there is
the mess and you have to deal with it anyway. The
wonderful, amazing fact is that sorrow doesn't dwell
on our doorstep all the time. What it does is teach
us to appreciate its absence so that we can refuel
our tanks in order to face the times when it returns.
Just remember that sunshine and rain are what
makes the rainbow; you can't have one without the
other. I know there are times when the clouds
overshadow the vibrant colors of the rainbow but
it's there...our eyes have just not picked up the
colors yet!
