$50 bills

Secret Service has
been notified of case.
A man who used his computer
) and scanner to print counterfeit
money has been arrested after,
video evidence showed him
passing a fake $50 bill at a local
store.
According to an arrest affidavit
issued by Taylor County Sheriffs
Office Dep. Brian Cruse, the
subject, Linson Lavern Williams,
39, went into WACO #2
(Pepperheads) last Friday 'night,
during the midnight shift and
bought several items, paying for
them with a counterfeit $50 bill.
While there, he also signed
someone else's name when he
charged fuel to the company he
works for, according to Cruse.
The next morning, when the
store manager was counting the
night shift's money, she said she
immediately noticed that the bill
was fake and called the Taylor
County Sheriffs Office.
She and Cruse viewed the
security video and they positively
identified Williams as the person
passing the "funny money."
When Linson was confronted,
he agreed to let officers search his
home.
While there, a computer was
discovered that "he admitted that
he used for copying currency,"
said Cruse. "He said that he
printed around 10, fifty dollar bills
and that he was in the process of
copying $20 bills.
".During the search of his home,
I located several bags of cocaine
and numerous pipes which
Williams admitted were used for
smoking crack cocaine," Cruse
said. "A small amount of
marijuana was also found in
several containers.
"Williams stated that all of the
items found in his home were his.
He also admitted to making the
forged money to passes good bills
and said that he signed for fuel
under an incorrect name, knowing
that he should not have," Cruse
added.
A spokesperson for TCSO said
an active investigation is currently
underway on this case as other
counterfeit bills have been
showing up at other places of
business here.

Time is running out for the owners of a house on.Dundee Street, which
the City of Perry has declared a public nuisance, citing rampant drug
activity and prostitution on the premises.
Perry City Manager Bob Brown said a letter of intent was sent to the
owners in November, advising them to take immediate action to abate the
illegal activity there or legal action would be taken.
The owners have until Jan. 31, just five days away, to correct the
problems at 517 West Dundee Street.
The letter, penned by City Attorney Mike Smith, reads:
"This firm has been retained by the City of Perry, Florida, a municipality
organized and existing under the laws of the State of Florida for the
purpose of advising you that the real property...has been declared a public
nuisance, pursuant to Florida Statute 823.10, which reads in part, that,
'Any...dwelling house..., which is visited by persons for the purpose of
unlawfully using any substance controlled under Chapter 893, or any
drugs described in Chapter 499, or which is used for the illegal keeping,
selling or delivering of the same, shall be declared a public nuisance.'

Editor's Note: The following historical
recollection was first printed in a regional
historical quarterly magazine. During the
winter of 1870-71, a small party of men
came to the panhandle of Florida on an
extended hunting trip. The "company," as
they called themselves, consisted of 22-
year-old Richard D. Edmondson, his
uncle Robert Edmondson (about 45
years old), Robert's son, Joseph Jones
.Edmondson (about 22), George Dick
(age ?) and Capt. W.L. Brewster (about
40). Crossing the border into Florida in
mid-December, the company traveled
and hunted in Jackson, Washington and
Bay counties for about five weeks, then.
proceeded eastward through Marianna,
Quincy and Tallahassee to their ultimate
destination in the swampy pine woods of
southern Jefferson and Taylor counties.

last night, though we had our tent

and one squirrel. After dinner we

3 snipes. The land is sandy; by
measuring, it produces from 10 to
15 bushels .of corn per acre. Mr.
Roberts owns a steam mill for
grinding corn. We camped on his
place and are treated kindly.
Jan. 28, Saturday. Take down
the tent and leave Mr.'Robert's;
travel' toward Tallahassee. Mr:
Roberts gives us a dog; part Scotch
Tarrier. To Tallahassee, 8 miles.
From here we travel east 6 miles,
camp at a pond on the left of the
road. Here is the best land we have
seen in the state. Most of the
farming lands are owned by the
Churses (Chaires).

Law enforcement officials were
searching for a persons) who

and made off with nearly $2,000
worth of the store's stock.
According to Bill Gardiner, one
of the partners in the business, the
intruders entered through a hole
which they chopped in the roof.
"From there on, it was easy for
them," he added. "They just
'dropped to the floor and left by the
door when they were finished."

Long before the days of nursing homes and assisted
living, our older generations were an integral part of
our growing up years. Their wisdom was looked upon
with respect and curiosity. They taught us from their
life experiences and we were grateful. I know there
were times that I failed to listen and those were the
times I usually lived to regret my rebellion when the
older folks in my life were proven correct.
It seems that nowadays there is such a barrier
between the younger and older generations, and it
really saddens me to see children and teens that are
missing this important aspect of growing up. When I
was a child, I never looked at the older folks in my life
with disdain as you so often see today. They were
included in everything! When the family gathered it
was a patch-quilt of different ages that contributed to
the lively conversation. No one was left out from the
youngest to the oldest as the words flew around the
dinner table or across the front porch. It was the same
at church or on shopping trips to town as all ages met
up to visit. I'm sure this is where I was taught to love
the use of words and the pictures they created in my
mind as I was invited to participate in whatever
subject was being discussed at the time.
It would be impossible to name all the older people
who have contributed so much to my life, but as I've
said before, without a doubt my daddy was one of the
greatest contributors. I have heard that this particular
story exists in other family tales, but nevertheless it is
one of my favorites so I'll share it with you. My great
uncles and aunts lived mostly in Georgia, and
although they had died before I was born, I was
privileged to know them because daddy kept their
memories alive as he passed along stories about them.
One such story involved Uncle Bill Chester and his 'old
hound dog Blue. According to daddy it was a cold
Georgia winter and Uncle Chestei had rounded up the
yard chickens-and secured them in the chicken pen.
He began to notice 'that his chicken count was
dropping as fast as the temperature so he plotted a
way to catch the villain. But it seems the villain was
able to outsmart him for several nights until one
moon-lit night when Uncle Bill sat up instead of going
to bed. It paid off because around midnight Uncle Bill
heard a commotion in the chicken pen that alerted
him that the villain was on the prowl. Ever so slowly
Uncle Bill crept out the door, down the steps and
across the yard with his trusty shotgun, both barrels
fully loaded and cocked. Just as Uncle Bill had the
villain in his sight, the situation took a turn for the
worst. You see, like most older folks of his day Uncle
Bill wore a starched white nightshirt to bed and as he
crept forward the white glare of his nightshirt had.
woke Old Blue up from a dead sleep. Seeing it was
Uncle Bill, Blue decided to join him on his excursion,
so he was slowly bringing up the rear. As the wind
picked up the hem of Uncle Bill's nightshirt he spotted
the fox with one of his chickens in its mouth so he
stopped and leaned over to get a good shot. Uncle Bill
stopped but Old Blue didn't......Blue's cold nose made
contact with Uncle Bill right about where the wind had
raised the nightshirt to his waist and Uncle Bill
unloaded both barrels of the shotgun. When the
smoke cleared the fox was no where in sight and Uncle
Bill had blasted several chickens.
"Uncle Bill just sat on the cold ground and cried,"
said daddy. Then, like all good farmers of his day,
Uncle Bill cleaned up the damage, got dressed and by
daylight was. headed out to the fields for another
honest day of work. Daddy never did tell us if the fox
returned but one thing's for sure, if it did, I bet Uncle
Bill made sure that Blue was tied to a post before he
started across the yard in the cold dark of the night.
Another story that daddy told was about my Great
Aunt Laura. She lived in the backwoods of South
Georgia as well. It seems her house had the reputation
of being haunted. Daddy said it was a big old wooden-
frame house that sat up high off the ground. A porch
ran the length of the house and the entrance was a
wide hallway with rooms on both sides. The house sat
back among trees and Aunt Laura kept the yards
swept clean without a single blade of grass growing
anywhere. The "haunting" seemed to center around a
rocking chair that sat in the corner of the parlor near
the fireplace. Daddy said that ever so often, and with
no apparent reason, the rocking chair would break
into a rocking motion. This activity didn't seem to
bother Aunt Laura who had become accustomed to
the chair's behavior. Daddy said he didn't think
anyone had died there nor had any bad thing
happened that might have caused the haunting. So,
the family didn't make a big deal out of it--they just
accepted it for what it was and went on with living
their lives.
My brother Bobby said he can remember going to
Aunt Laura's house and that it was a little spooky but
he never saw the chair rocking. I don't think daddy
ever saw the chair rocking either but he loved Aunt
Laura so he didn't contradict her story. It was simply
a matter of respect for your elders and, of course,
daddy loved to tell the story so he wasn't about to
disagree with Aunt Laura.
And then there was Miss Hattle who lived at Jug
Island...but that's a story I'll tell another time! :

appointed board members. Bethea
cited a case he witnessed at a
Florida Commission on Ethics
meeting in which an official from
another county followed advice
from his county attorney which
turned out to be incorrect. The
official ultimately lost his case,
Bethea said.
"What I'm asking for is that we
write an ordinance because we're
going to have a lot more of these
things," Bethea said. "The county
is changing and we're not talking
about paving a quarter mile of road
here, we're talking about 8,000
acres out here. Whenever


something's not done and people
get upset, they utilize whatever
means, whatever they feel is
necessary," he said.
"I am very concerned about
getting the people to serve on these
boards, and I think people are
looking at that thing.
"I wouldn't volunteer my time
right now to serve on some of these
boards," Bethea said. .
County Attorney Conrad Bishop
said he would have to do research
to see if the commission has the
ability to offer indemnification.
The commission agreed by
consensus to have Bishop research
the issue and bring his findings
back to the board.
In October a pair of ethics
complaints filed were against
Bethea and then Commissioner
Daryll Gunter by William Rick
Causey, who in July qualified to
become a member of the Taylor
Soil and Water Conservation
District Board of Supervisors.


Causey officially took office on
Jan. 2.
The charges, which stemmed
from a forum held by the
developers of the Magnolia Bay
Marina project in September, were
dismissed by the Florida
Commission on Ethics citing a
lack of "legal sufficiency."
Two other complaints filed by
Causey against Perry/Taylor
County Executive Director Dawn
Taylor and Taylor County
Development Authority Director
Rick Breer were dismissed
as well.
The Perry News-Herald has
confirmed that three additional
ethics complaints have been filed
against local officials, but it is not
known who filed the complaints or
who they target due to the
confidential nature of ethics
complaints. It is not known
whether these complaints have any
connection to ,the resignations
from the planning board.

uttering a forged bill, possession
of instruments for forging bills,
cheating, forgery, possession of
cocaine, possession of less than 20
grams of cannabis, possession of
drug paraphernalia, uttering a
counterfeit bill and possession of
counterfeit bills.
All charges are felonies, with
the exception of the cannabis and
paraphernalia.
According to TCSO Cpt. Audie
Towles, the United States Secret
Service, which handles counterfeit
money issues, has been contacted.

dredging of a navigable channel
will produce as much a benefit to
the shallow sea grass as it would be
a detriment. At present, shallow
water boaters consistently run
aground and create prop damage in


our shallow water sea grass.
"We believe with a well-marked
and maintained channel, these
same boaters would be less likely.
to run aground or operate across
shallow flats, creating damage.
They would be much more likely
to utilize a marked channel. In
addition, the sea grass that would
be removed in the dredging of the
channel would be replanted in
other nearby damaged areas. We
believe the net gain of protected
sea grass would outweigh the net
loss."
The committee also sites the
largest percentage of the county's
coast owned by the state.
"The committee believes that
opportunities for developments
such as this on our coast are very
limited due to the vast amount of
land that is owned by the state for
preservation purposes and this is a
de,vyopment o0n ,one ,,of those
limited areas 'that plans to 'do it
right.
"The economic benefit of this
development would be a stable
long-term' contributor that could
take the place of other significant
current contributors that may not
be around forever.

development is a one-of-a-kind
opportunity for the county that we
cannot afford to pass up."

"I think this (Magnolia Bay) is
something we can live with in

"I agree that this a good project,"
Commissioner Pat Patterson said.
Greene suggested the
commission pass resolutions of
support for the project as it
proceeds through the permitting
process.
"Why do we have an advisory
committee politicizing a project?"
Beach resident George Stamos
asked. "And that's exactly what
they're doing.
"I really am concerned about the


committee as it was formed,"
Stamos said. "I live at the beach.
Every one of the individuals on
that committee has a special
interest."

The proposed rule for the Lower
Econfina River WMA would
establish regulations for the new
WMA with the following open
seasons: 16-day archery, three-day
muzzleloading gun, 42-day small
game, nine-day spring turkey, and
fishing and frogging throughout
the year.
ATVs and motorcycles would be
prohibited; hunting with bird dogs
and dogs with a shoulder height of
less than 15 inches would be
allowed and hunting hogs with
dogs would be prohibited.
FWC staff is expected to
recommend that the slot limit on
redfish be tightened to 20-26
inches from the current 18-27-inch
slot. The limit will remain one
and there is not expected to be a
closed season.

A desperation three-point shot at
the buzzer by Taylor County
High's Timothy Miller tell short
here Tuesday as the Bulldog
basketball team suffered a 64-63
defeat against Suwannee High.
The starting line-up was
Marquis Ellis, Chad Ellis, Greg
Flowers, James Dukes and Jabaree
Williams.
The first half was full of
straight game play with nice,
clean lay-ups by M. Ellis and
Greg Sneed.
The Taylor 'Dogs had just come
off a two game winning streak,
first defeating Florida High then
Jefferson last week and played this
game with confidence.
The varsity boys were down 22
to 29 at the half as a result of
several missed free-throws and
many sloppy shots.
The second half was a better
display considering that TCHS
almost tripled their score from 22
in the first half to 63.
The fourth quarter brought great
suspense to the air which had the
whole gymnasium standing on
their toes.

The Taylor County Middle
School girls soccer program ended
a successful season on a winning
note. The Lady Dogs beat Fort
White 2-0. Scoring for the
Bulldogs was Savannah Cantrell
with one goal and an assist to
Katie Holden on the final goal.
The TCMS girls ended the season
with an 11-4-1 record.
"We had a phenomenal season
this year," said head coach
Jonathan Mauk. "Considering that
we had to completely rebuild this
team from scratch, I couldn't be
any prouder of these girls and the
effort they put in. It was obvious
at the end of the season of just,
how far we had come since day
one. We challenged the girls in
practice with their training and
they successfully met those
challenges. Our season record of
11 wins and 4 losses represents
just how successful we were.
"I'd have to say that the
.highlight of our year was defeating
an undefeated Lake City team that
had dominated everyone they
played this year," said Mauk. "We
came up with a game plan and the
girls executed it perfectly. We had
different players step up all year
and Tiffany Nix really stepped in
to score the winning goal against
Lake City."
Final stats for the TCMS
players were as follows, Savannah
Cantrell, 22 goals, 9 assists;


Jenna Wilson, 8 goals; Sarena
Peacock, 4 goals, 4 assists;
Ashley Mixon, 4 goals, 2 assists;
Shae Horner, 1 goal, 5 assists;
Katie Holden, 3 goals, 1 assist;
Courtney Brown, 2 goals, 2
assists; Macy Gregory, 1 goal, 2
assists; Sarah Meecham, 3 assists;
and Tiffany Nix, 1 goal.
"Their names don't always show
up in the stats, but equally
important are the other players on
our team, especially the defensive
players. Our defense was very
inexperienced this year but they
kept it close so that we were in
every game," said Mauk.
Leading the Bulldog defense was
keeper Elizabeth Devane, followed
by defenders Macy Gregory, Katie
Holden, Ciara Perkins, Abbi
Walker, Candice Story, Jackie
Noles, Shanna Pittman, Macey
Sadler, and Whitney Young.
Midfielders who had an impact
on this year's team were Hanna
Blanco, Hope Gonzalez, and Ciera
Ormsby. Taylor County's young
strikers Katie Brown and Jennifer
Sullivan showed plenty of
promise this year.
"Things look bright for the
future of TCMS girls soccer," said
Coach Mauk.
The end of the year banquet was
held last Friday night in which all
the girls got their well-deserved
trophies. Special awards were
given to "Most Outstanding


Offense," Jenna Wilson; "Most
Outstanding Defense," Macy
Gregory; "Coaches Award," Sarah
Meecham; "Most Improved,"
Tiffany Nix; "Outstanding 6th
Grader," Hanna Blanco;
"Outstanding 7th Grader," Ashley
Mixon; "Outstanding 8th Grader,"
Katie Holden; "Leadership Award,"
Shae Horner; and "Most Valuable
Player," Savannah Cantrell.
"Savannah set the career goals
record for TCMS. Savannah and
all the other 8th graders will be
missed," said.Coach Mauk.
"This was my first time
coaching girls soccer, and I have
to say that it was wonderful
working with such great players,
who had fantastic attitudes and


work ethics," said Mauk. "I'd like
to thank Principal Dyal for giving
me the opportunity to coach this
team. I'd also like to thank my
two assistant coaches Kasey
Roberts and Doug Cantrell for the
great job they did with the girls
this season."

the game, Taylor ran a play that
set up Miller's 3-point shot.
Jaharce Williams fired the ball
down court to Miller as the
seconds dwindled away.
The crowd began to scream
-Timmy! Timmy!" but Miller's
attempt to make a game winning
three-pointer fell short, giving the
Suwannee Buildogs a 64-63
victory over the home team.
The Dogs' record is now at 11-

Miller's game performance was
very exceptional in regard to his
high total of 22 points in the
game including three 3-pointers in

"We fought hard and when it
came down to the end, their last
shot was better than ours,"
Flowers said.

Women urged to try 'Intentional Living'


at First Baptist's Women's Conference


Women's conference is Feb. 10
Diane Tuttle of the First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Ga., will lead the
annual Women's Conference at Perry's First Baptist Church on Saturday,
Feb. 10.
Coffee and juice will be served at 8:30 a.m.'with the conference slated
for 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
The registration fee of $20 includes a snack and lunch. Childcare will be
offered for children under 12. Registration forms and information are
available from the church office, 584-7066.The deadline for registration is
Feb. 2.
Tuttle is a graduate of CLASS (Christian Leaders, Authors and Speakers
Seminar) and is director of Wild Women of God conferences for Dr. Lori
Salierno.
She first earned a B.A. in education, and still maintains "a passion for
learning." She suggests, "Life is hectic' and crazy for me--as a wife,
mother, teacher. leader, speaker or singer, whatever hat I am wearing at the
time. Sometimes it's easier to say, 'No hats today,' but those are the times I

Woman nabbed after trying


to cash fake money orders


A woman who attempted to cash
phony money orders for the second
time at Wal-Mart has been arrested
and charged with cheating
(scheming to defraud others of
money).
Perry. Police Department Ptl.
Dwight Norris said he was called
to the store last Saturday in
reference to a fraud case.
"A Wal-Mart assistant manager
said the suspect, Sharon Louise
Willis, 50, was still in the store and
had six money orders for $900
each, $5,400 total and was
attempting to cash them.
"The assistant manager said she


had come in the day before and
attempted to cash them, but was
told they weren't any good," Norris
said.
Contact was made with Willis
and a son, who was with her.
When Norris asked her about the
money orders, Willis said that
someone she had met on the
Internet had sent, them to her.
Norris then transported Willis to
PPD, where she was read her
Miranda Rights. She then said she
needed to speak to an attorney
before answering any questions.
When the 17-year-old son was
questioned, he told Norris that "his


mother had been talking to a nan
on the Internet and that he had sent
her the money orders and told her
to cash them and she could keep
half the money. He wanted the
other half so he could buy a plane
ticket and come to Florida.
"(The son) said that all of his
family had told his mama not to
cash them. He also said he was
with her at Wal-Mart on the day
before when store officials had told
her the money orders were no
good," Norris said.
It was at that point that Willis
was placed under arrest and
charged with cheating.

are encouraged to get a head start
on tax preparation, especially since
early filers avoid the last minute
rush and get their refunds sooner.
Here are seven easy ways to get
a good jump on your taxes long
before the April deadline is here:
1. Gather your records in
advance. Make sure you have all
the records you need, including W-
2s and 1099s. Don't forget to save
a copy for your files.
2. Get the right forms. They're
available around the clock on the
IRS Web site, IRS.gov.
3. Take your time. Don't forget,
to leave room for a coffee break
when filling out your tax return as

4. Double-check your math
and verify all Social Security
numbers. These are among the
most common errors found on tax
returns. Taking care will reduce

The Internal Revenue Service began a busy 2007 filing season on Jan. 4
that features telephone excise tax refunds, a new refund deposit feature
and recently enacted tax breaks that may require extra attention from
taxpayers.
"Taxpayers will have a number of new tax benefits and features
available this year," IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson said. "We
encourage taxpayers to -take a few minutes to review these changes,
particularly those involving the recently enacted tax law provisions. The
IRS will do everything it can to minimize the impact on taxpayers."
The agency is sending 17 million 1040 tax packages. for 2006 to
taxpayers who have previously filed paper returns. The number of paper
tax booklets being mailed to Americans continues to decline as more
people opt for electronic filing. The IRS expects to process about 136
million individual tax returns for 2006, with more than half of those filed
Major changes for 2006:
Telephone Excise Tax Refund. Individual taxpayers will be able to
request a refund if they paid the federal excise tax on long-distance or
bundled service. The government stopped collecting the federal excise tax
on long-distance service in August and announced plans to provide
refunds of these taxes billed after Feb. 28, 2003, and before Aug. 1, 2006.
More than 146 million individual taxpayers are expected to request the
refund.
To request the refunds, taxpayers have several options:
Individual taxpayers can request the refund by using the standard
amounts, which are based on the total number of exemptions claimed on
the 2006 federal income tax return. Choosing the standard amount saves
taxpayers the time and trouble of digging through 41 months of old phone
bills. The standard amounts are $30 for a person filing a return with one
exemption, $40 for two exemptions, $50 for three exemptions and $60 for
four or more exemptions. For example, a married couple filing a joint
return with two dependent children (for a total of four exemptions) will be
eligible for the maximum standard amount of $60. To get the standard
amount, eligible individual taxpayers will fill out an additional line on
their regular 2006 1040 return. (Line 71 on Form 1040; Line 42 on Form
1040A; Line 9 on Form 1040EZ.)
Alternatively, individual taxpayers who want to request a refund of the
actual amount of tax paid should figure that amount using Form 8913
and report it on their income tax return.
Businesses and tax-exempt organizations can also request a refund
under a different procedure; more information is available at IRS.gov.

Holiday moves filing deadline to April 17


Taxpayers will have until
Tuesday, April 17, to file their
2006 returns and pay any taxes
due, the Internal Revenue Service
announced recently.
Taxpayers will have extra time
to file and pay because April 15
falls on a Sunday in 2007, and the

three-year statute of limitations is
expiring.

Most taxpayers will not have to
change their plans in response to
this announcement. Three out of

Award nominations, Part One


For movie buffs and critics, the announcements of
the 2007 Academy Award nominations provided a few
surprises. For a lot of people, the announcements gave
them the first opportunity to even hear about most of
the films named.
While most moviegoers have heard of "The
Departed" and "Dreamgirls," I doubt that's the case for
"Little Miss .Sunshine," "Pan's Labyrinth" or "Little
Children."
To be'honest, I haven't seen many of them either. In
some cases, like with "The Departed," I just didn't get
a chance to see it. In others, like "Pan's Labyrinth,"
they weren't in theaters within 1,000 miles of here until
recently. Even so, I feel that I've kept abreast enough
with the hype. buzz and

start small with the short
film subjects: Best Short
Film Li\e Action. Best
Short Film Animated
and Best Docutmentary -
Short Subjects. These are short films mostly made by
up-and-coming directors that 99 percent of people
have never heard of before. Out of the 14 nominees in
these three categories, I have only. seen one of them,
Disney's animated"The Little Matchgirl," directed by
Roger Allers and Don Hahn. While it is a beautiful
return to traditional animation for Disney and a
heartbreaking adaptation of the Hans Christian
Andersen's classic short story, I simply don't know
enough of the nominees in these categories to make
anything but a random guess at the winners. On a side
note, "The Little Matchgirl" is included as an extra on
the special edition release of "The Little Mermaid."
The Best Documentary Features category tends to
be unpredictable, but this year all signs are pointing to
former .Vice President Al Gore's "An Inconvenient
Truth," directed by Davis Guggenheim. The global
warming doc has to be considered the front-ruiner
with -heavy press support since its release. The other
four features in the category include two on the
situation in Iraq ("Iraq in Fragments" and "My Country
My Country"), one on the Catholic priest scandal
.("Deliver Us from Evil") and one with a less than
flattering portrayal of an evangelical Christiah youth
camp ("Jesus Camp").
Unlike the Golden Globes, the Best Foreign
Language Film award actually has to go to a foreign
film, rather than to any film not in the English language.


Each country submits one film for consideration.
The only foreign film I did get a chance to see this
year, China's "Curse of the Golden Flower," didn't
make the final cut so I will have to go by the current
buzz. Mexico's "Pan's Labyrinth," ("Laberinto del
Fauno, El") directed by Guillermo del Toro looks to be
the favorite with several other nominations including
writing. Other movies in the category include
Denmark's "After the Wedding," Algeria's "Days of
Glory," Germany's "The Lives of Others" and Canada's
"Water."
Next up is the Academy Award's newest category,
only several years old, Best Animated Feature Film.
This year, "Cars" appears to have this one in the bag,

but I think "Pirates" will go home with the gold.
Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Sound
(I'm not entirely sure what the difference is between
these two), have almost identical lists of nominees. In
Best Sound Editing, "Apocalypto," "Blood Diamond,"
"Flags of Our Fathers," "Letters from Iwo Jima" and
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" will vie
for the Oscar. For Best Sound, "Letter from Iwo Jima"
is replaced with "Dreamgirls." With little to base this
on, I'm going to pick "Letters from Iwo Jima" for
sound editing and "Pirates" for sound.
"Apocalypto," "Click" and "Pan's Labyrinth" are in
the running for Best Achievement in Makeup. While
"Apocalypto" managed to transform school teachers
and dock workers into warriors and kings, I think the
sheer wierdness of "Pan's Labyrinth" will win it.
The final category for this week is Best
Achievement in Costume Design. My pick is "Curse of
the Golden Flower," which included some of the most
elaborate costumes I've seen in recent memory. "The
Queen," riding some high profile buzz and top-tier
nominations, has to be a close second. The other three
nominees are "The Devil Wears Prada," "Dreamgirls"
"Marie Antoinette."
Still to come, the best writing categories, actors and
actress and the big one, Best Picture.

Once a year, medieval magic
sweeps through the City of
Gainesville and transports people
of all ages to a land where brave
knights joust for the honor of their
ladies and King Arthur must battle
the forces of evil. It is here at
Hoggetowne that the spirit of the
Middle Ages is celebrated.
The 21st annual Hoggetowne
Medieval Faire on Jan. 27-28 and
Feb. 2-4 promises to bring fantasy
and fun to all who enter its gates.
Tucked away in the enchanted
forest of the Alachua County
Fairgrounds in Gainesville, a
medieval marketplace comes to
life as troupes of actors, street
performers and musicians journey
back to the days of yore.
Trumpets sound as the Royal
procession begins, and the streets
of Hoggetowne fill with eager
guests. Young visitors are invited
to become royalty at the Royale
Pavilion, where on one knee they
will be knighted lords or ladies of
the court.
The forgotten skills of falconry,
archery and puppetry are brought
back to life at the Faire. Jugglers,
musicians and dancers will fill the
streets and eight stages with
continuous live revelry--a medley
including gypsy dancing, ancient
music, mystifying magic, acting
troupes and more. Performers
mingle with the crowds, as the
atmosphere fills with the sweet
Medieval sounds of minstrels,
harpists and many "olde world"
instruments.
This highly anticipated event
features more than 150 talented
artisans, who travel to
Hoggetowne from all over the
countryside to demonstrate and


- sell their traditional arts and crafts.
At the Marketplace, visitors can
marvel at time-honored traditions
of weaving, blacksmithing,
leatherworking, woodcarving and
jewelry making. Browse through
the bustling marketplace for that
perfect gift or trinket.

"To take full advantage of the
medieval magic, visitors should
arrive early," said Linda Piper,
fire coordinator. "As the city
gates open each morning, the
Faire's first guests are greeted by
all of Hoggetowne."
On the tournament field,
spectators can watch as armored
knights joust on horseback for the
honor of their ladies, charging
head-on with lance and shield.
Visitors can also watch a Living
Chess Game, played out with
human pieces as Arthur and his
followers battle against Emperor
Fabulous and the Romans in a
fight for freedom. When a piece is
moved to an occupied square, the


players must "swing steel" to see
who survives.
Guests of Hoggetowne can try
their luck as they shoot arrows and
hurl battle axes to test their
medieval skills. Those daring
enough can enjoy the adventure of
human-powered push rides or take
a glimpse into the future with
Hoggetowne's mystifying
fortunetellers. There is something
for everyone in Hoggetowne.
Prepare to feast on hearty food
and drink fit for a king. Enjoy a
wonderful array of delicacies
including mouth-watering treats
like succulent ribs, bloomin'
onions, sweet potato fries and
turkey legs.
"Plan to spend the entire day at
Hoggetowne. There is so much to
see and do, you'll be entertained
the whole time," Piper said.
"People wait all year for this
anticipated event." . .. I
More than 50,000 guests are
expected to pass through the gates
of Hoggetowne this year making it
one of the most successful events
in the region.
The Hoggetowne Medieval
Faire, produced by the City of
Gainesville's Department of Parks,
Recreation and Cultural Affairs,
will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tickets for Saturdays and Sundays
are $12 for adults and $5 for
children, ages 5 to 17.
The Alachua County
Fairgrounds is situated east of
Gainesville on 39th Avenue and
SR 121, adjacent to the Gainesville
Regional Airport. There are
absolutely no pets permitted at the
