Action Committee welcomes
Ulyssee Glee Jr. as keynote
speaker for the 23rd annual Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Commemorative Celebration,
Sunday, Jan. 14.
The special service will be held
at New Brooklyn Baptist Church,
starting at 6 p.m.
Dr. Glee, who currently lives in
Washington, D.C., was born and
raised in Madison. He is a 1967
honor graduate of Florida A&M
University. He holds both a
masters degree and PhD from the
University of Maryland, and is the
managing partner of The Fenton
Group, LLC.
The Perry Youth Mass Choir,
directed by Dr. Phillip Combs, and
a guest group will provide music
ministry for the program.
On Monday, Jan. 15, a
celebration honoring King's
legacy will be held at Loughridge
Park, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
At 11 a.m., participants will then
march to Jerkins Community
Center for a program which will
include guest ,peaker- and
musical selections.
"This celebration will display
the visions which Dr. King stood
and spoke for throughout his life,
so that in some way, we can
promote love and togetherness for
this community," said organizer
Rod Williams.

Bank fund

for crash

survivor
A young woman who was
critically injured in a car crash that
killed her mother in December
2006, is in need of financial help.
Ashley Williams Jones, 18, and
two other passengers were riding
with Cynthia Miller, 51, when a
truck drove into their lane, hitting
them head on.
Miller lost her life in the crash
and her daughter, Jones, suffered
two broken thigh bones and a
mangled, broken left ankle, along
with many other injuries, leaving
her almost unable to walk.
Jones lived with her mother at
the time and they carpooled
together to their workplace. Jones

Highway 98 crash
According to an eyewitness at the scene, the driver of this truck was attempting to pass a
dump truck traveling eastbound on Highway 98 when he crashed into a large utility truck
exiting Powell Hammock Grade. The impact tore the front hood and both front fenders off the
utility truck and sent the pick-up crashing through a corner fence. The pick-up driver, who
was alert and talking with emergency medical personnel, was transported to Doctors'
Memorial Hospital.


The city council may be looking
to break a decades-old franchise
agreement with Progress Energy
which gives the corporation
exclusive rights as the sole
provider of electricity for Perry
and the surrounding area.
On Tuesday, the council asked
City Manager Bob Brown to
arrange a legal briefing on their
behalf to explore options (and
estimated costs of those options)
on different remedies regarding a
breech in the franchise agreement.
Under terms of the agreement,
the company is required to
maintain a local office for
customers' inquiries and to accept
payments.
However, in 2003, Progress
Energy (formerly Florida Power


Corporation) closed the local
office and routed customer service
inquiries to a call center.
At the time the closing occurred,
the city apparently took a "wait
and see" stance on the issue,
Brown said; but in recent months
city offices have had to contend
with an increased number of
customer complaints directed
toward the power provider.
"The city has made several
proposals back to Progress Energy
for something much less than a
full-time office. Our latest request
was for the company to have a
representative here at least twice a
month. However, their response
was to ask that we (the city) give

Taylor County resident Christine Thompson testifies before
the Florida Public Service Commission during hearings
'Wednesday on the need for a proposed 800-megawatt, coal-
fired power plant in the county. Thompson was one of some
13 area residents who spoke on the issue. The commission is
expected to make a decision on Feb. 13.


The Public Service Commission
held a "need determination
hearing" this week for the Taylor
Energy Center, sparking a lengthy
public comment session with a
number- of. residents, from Taylor
County making the trip to
Tallahassee to speak.
The purpose of the hearing was
for the commission to receive
information and comment on
whether there is a need for the 800-
megawatt, coal-fired power plant
proposed for Taylor County' by


four municipal utilities, including
the City of Tallahassee..
A decision is not expected until
Feb. 13, when the commission
will vote upon its staffs
.recommendation. ,
Some 36 people spoke, taking
up the' entire day Wednesday,
prompting the commission to
continue the hearing Thursday for
the evidentiary portion.
The commission imposed no
time limit on speakers, but
everyone who wished to give


Foley names Taff


new vice president


Foley Timber & Land Company
has a new senior vice president.
Angus Broward "Bo" Taff,
former deputy director for Gov.
Jeb Bush's Office of Tourism,
Trade & Economic Development,
has joined the Perry-based timber
company. He will lead the firm's
planning division.
Foley President Howard Leach
welcomed Taff to the company and
the community earlier this week at
a reception attended by some 30
people.
"With Foley owning more than
500,000 acres in Taylor and
surrounding counties and with
Florida's population expected to
increase dramatically over the next
50 years, Mr. Leach feels we


should be pro-active in planning
how we want our community to
grow," Taff said.
He added that part of his job will
be to work with members of the
community to develop a vision.
Taff served the past four years as
a key member of Gov. Bush's team
to diversify Florida's economy.
Prior, to that he was a senior
program manager with Enterprise
Florida, the public-private
economic development arm of the
state.
A 1987 graduate of Florida State
University, Taff has also served
with the Florida Department of
Commerce where he managed
some 100 economic development
projects.


In memory
The Perry Kiwanis Club honored the memory of Gary
Williams Wednesday--a former member and owner of
WPRY. Williams, who died last month, was instrumental in
the success of the club's annual radio auction. Above, Kiwanis

Work release 'escapee' caught


A man who failed to return to jail
from work release and was
considered an "escapee" was found
and re-arrested Wednesday after
officers from Perry Police
Department and the Taylor County
Sheriffs Office formed a
manhunt.
George L. Cook, 37, is currently
serving, time in the county jail for
violation of probation on burglary
and domestic battery charges.
TCSO Cpt. Richard Johnson
said that Cook had qualified for


work release and had secured an
outside job at a local restaurant.
"Cook left to go to work on
Tuesday, but that night, shortly
before midnight, a head count was
conducted and it was discovered
that he had not checked
himself back into the jail," said
Johnson.
"His boss was contacted and it
was discovered that he had gotten
off work three hours prior." .
At 10:30 Wednesday morning,
Cook was officially tagged as an


escapee.
While on patrol, PPD Ptl.
Garrett Campbell radioed that
Cook was seen walking on Richard
Bell Avenue, wearing red shorts.
"As I was approaching Hwy. 19,
I saw a black male in red shorts
walking down the side of the
highway," said Campbell. "I pulled
up beside Cook, got out and
arrested him."
Campbell said after the arrest, he
performed a search of Cook and
found a glass (crack) pipe with


cocaine residue inside it and a
lighter in his front pocket.
Cook was taken to the county
jail, where additional charges of
escape and possession of drug
paraphernalia were levied against
him.
"Because of minimum and
maximum sentencing guidelines,"
said Johnson, "he could be looking
at an additional five to 10 years."
Cook is being held in the
county jail under a "no bond"
issue.

Air Force Base that was part of a
soured land swap scheme for
Taylor County timberlands, may
now become a joint resort for all
'military branches.
Convicted Niceville land
speculator Stephen Alford
attempted to swap thousands of
acres of Taylor County lands for
the beachfront property in
2004.
The Air Force planned to use the
Taylor County acreage for a
missile range.
The 16-acre parcel on Okaloosa
Island was formerly used as a test
site.
The resort would probably be
the result of a partnership between
the Air Force and a private
developer.
The Air Force would lease the
site to a business or businesses that
would run the resort and adjoining
shops.
The resort would likely be open
to reservists, Guardsmen,
military retirees, defense
department civilians and their
families.
The Pentagon currently has four
military resorts, including Shades
of Green Armed Forces Recreation
Center at Walt Disney World near
Orlando.

Dickert succeeded the late L. P.
"Pete" Gibson, who had been

directors since shortly after its improving the Taylor County
founding in 1958. school system."


Dickert had been a member of

ALAN HART ANNOUNCES
DECISION NOT TO RUN
Superintendent of Schools Alan
Hart announced his intention to
step down at the end of his term,
Jan. 2, 1973.
Hart, who had been the subject
of continuing editorial attacks
from another newspaper, did not
comment on what part, if any, the
attacks against him had had in
making his decision, except to say,
"Much of my tenure as
superintendent over the past eight
years has been served under severe

U. S. Air Force Major Charles
W. Holmes was on duty with the
Strategic Air Command at U Tapao
Airfield, Thailand.
Major Holmes, an air operations
officer, was assigned to the 307th
SirTieic-Wine:. The 307th flies B-
52 Stratofortress bombing
missions against Viet Cong targets
in Vietnam and KC-135
Stratotankers which provided
aerial refueling to bomber, fighter
-and reconnaissance aircraft
participating in the air war in
Southeast Asia.
Holmes is a 1951 graduate of
Taylor County High School and is
the son of Mr. and J. H. Holmes.

Mr. and Mrs. Larry Edward
Bodiford announced the birth of a
new baby son, Robert Edward,
born Jan. 4, in Doctors' Memorial
Hospital, weighing five pounds, 10
and 1/2 ounces at birth.

Jade Timothy Streit
Mr. and Mrs. Ardy Streit of Lake
Butler were the parents of a baby
son, Jade Timothy, born Jan. 4, in
Alachua General Hospital,
Gainesville.
Mr. and Mrs. Streit had a little
daughter, Deby, age 5, who joined
her parents in welcoming the new
arrival. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall
Snyder of Perry and Mr. and Mrs.
A. H. Streit of Gainesville were
grandparents of the new baby.

Editor's Note: The following historical
recollection was first printed in a regional
historical quarterly magazine. During the
winter of 1870-71, a small party of men
came to the panhandle of Florida on an


extended hunting trip. The "company," as
they called themselves, consisted of 22-
year-old Richard D. Edmondson, his
uncle Robert Edmondson (about 45
years old), Robert's son, Joseph Jones


Edmondson (about 22), George Dick
(age ?) and Capt. W.L. Brewster (about
40). The company traveled leisurely over
land by mule-drawn wagon and on foot,
leaving the north Alabama home of
*Robert Edmondson on the 29th of
November 1870. Crossing the border into
Florida in mid-December, the company
traveled and hunted in Jackson,
Washington and Bay counties for about
five weeks, then proceeded eastward
through Marianna, Quincy and
Tallahassee to their ultimate destination
in the swampy pine woods of southern
Jefferson and Taylor counties.
Jan. 6, Friday. Hunt eastward,
killed no game today.
Jan. 7, Saturday. Hunt eastward
down the Gulf coast, 5 miles.
Killed 3 bear, 2 one-year-olds and
one old female. The old mother
bear was killed by Uncle Robert
and myself. The first cub by Uncle
Robert, Mr. George D. and Jo E.
The other by myself. There were
four at first together. The 4th bear,
or 3rd cub, we shot several long
shots at, then ran it from three
o'clock till sundown, then left him
unhurt.
Jan. 8, Sunday. G. Dick, W.
Brewster, Jo and myself go back
after the bear. Return at one
o'clock. The rest of the day is spent
butchering and salting. Mr. Davis
and Robert Edmondson go up the
coast in search of Muse slut (a
fishing hole).
Jan. 9, Monday. We move from
camp back 1/2 miles beyond the
three notch pine. Messrs. Davis,
Robert Edmondson, W. Brewster
and Jo E. go with Mr. Brewer
saining and caught 314 fish. Made
only one drag. Supposed to be


about 800 pounds of good fish.
Jan. 10, Tuesday. We leave the
cook (Dock) in care of the camp
and go to Mr. Brewer's fish landing
and butcher 300 fish caught the
evening before. Got through about
11 o'clock. Intended catching more
that day but the wind blew from
the south and made the gulf too
rough. We returned to camp here
from Muse by Mr. Sharps at Point
Washington.
Jan. 11, Wednesday. Make an
early start from camp near Mr.
Brewer's. Travel 2 miles to the
Sister Ponds and camp. Dog Loud
is snagged bad.
Jan. 12, Thursday. From Sister
Ponds to Wells, 12 miles. I was
taken with a severe spell of
disordered stomach and bowels.
Was supplied with bed at Welles.
Company fish in the gap pond and
catch three pike and one trout.
Jan. 13, Friday. This morning I
am better. We come to Mr. Davis's,
8 miles. I am worse this evening.
We pay our cook $8.00. We
attempt to fish again this morning
but the waves here to high.
Jan. 14, Saturday. I rise very
early quite sick. I am invited by
Mr. Davis to go into his house and
go to bed, which I gladly accepted
after taking a wash and putting on
some clean clothes. The other
portion of the company spent the
day in cleaning and resting up. I
am a little relieved this evening.
Take a dost of Blumass tonight. I
am kindly attended by Mrs. Davis
and Uncle Robert. I am annoid by
a severe breaking out.

By the time the early fifties rolled around the family
had outgrown Daddy's log truck as a means of
transportation. Up until that time the trips to see
relatives in Georgia were carried out with daddy and
mama and ever how many children could fit into the cab
of daddy's log truck. But as the children grew larger, the
space in the truck cab grew smaller and there were a few
times some of the older ones made the trip on the flatbed
of the truck. Mama certainly didn't approve of her
children hanging onto the back of the truck as we
bumped down the highway, so it was decided that a car
was needed and the search for the ideal vehicle was
underway.
I can't remember ever being one of the occupants who
had to ride in the open air since I was one of the younger
of the five. I do recall the utter delight of traveling to our
grandpa's house in Nashville, Ga. My Grandpa Taylor
was the father of a family of 22 children so there were
always plenty of playmates at his house. My mama's
mother had died when mama was about 16 and Grandpa
had remarried my namesake (Essie) and they had started
a second set of Taylor children. Nowadays this sounds
incredible to have this large of a family, but it was not out
of the ordinary in those days. Well anyway, our stay at
Grandpa Taylor's house was entertaining to say the least.
It was one long feast as children lined up to have their
dinner plates filled with home-grown vegetables and
fresh fruits from the trees in the backyard. When
everyone settled with their plates Grandpa was nowhere
in sight. I never knew what happened to him until my
brother Bobby explained that grandpa never sat at the
table but took his plate to the backporch where he would
squat down by the door to eat his dinner. I suppose he
relished those quiet moments when it was just him all by
himself.
Our first car was eventually brought to our house by
mama's brother Dewey Taylor. It was a huge black
Packard circa somewhere in the 30's or 40's. It had four
doors that all opened from the middle of the car much
like a fancy sports car of today. No longer was the family
strapped for sitting room since this car was like a
cavernous cave with a front and back seat that could
accommodate even our large family. I can remember the
feeling of sitting in the back seat while mama was driving
and it seemed she was so far away that I would have to
stand close to the back of her seat ever so often to
reassure myself that we were riding in the same car.
To our family the car represented a newfound sense of
freedom when we would all climb inside for an afternoon
ride around Taylor County. We never seemed to have a
definite destination in mind, we were just going for a ride.
"The Ride" would always include a stop at the filling
station for gasoline. Then it was on to one of the local
stores, usually Mr. Nola's, where we would dip our hands
into the chest-style drink box for a cold drink. My favorite
was NuGrape or Strawberry NeHi. Most of the time a
pack of crackers or a candy bar was included in the treat.
When everyone had their goodies we would climb back
into the car for the conclusion of our ride. Nothing to this
day can compare with the pleasure of sitting in the big
backseat, the cool air blowing in your face from the
outside and you with a cold drink propped between your
knees while you munched on a Baby Ruth.
It's really no surprise that the Packard was such an
adventurous form of transportation. As I said, my Uncle
Dewey was the one who had brought the car to Perry and
he was what you might call "a colorful character." He
moved to Perry sometime around 1955 and opened an
upholstery shop in one of the empty airplane hangars at
the airbase. The airbase was used for a training -field
during the 30's I think, but was no longer used for, that
purpose. I do believe the Perry Airport may be in
operation now, but it wasn't back during those years. I'm
sure he felt right at home on the airbase since he was a
pilot himself. He had flown during his military years of
World War II and even later when he lived down in
Tampa. During his military career he suffered an
accident that claimed all of his right hand except his
thumb but it never seemed to hinder him from doing
whatever he chose to do. He was an amazing artist who
could take a broken piece of furniture and turn it into a
valued possession that would make anyone proud to be
its owner. I loved going to his shop to watch as he ripped
the 'remains of a tattered covering from a piece of
furniture then would recover it with the same quickness
as an elf from Santa's workshop would have done. Ever
so often he would find a treasure buried beneath the
folds of cotton batting that some distant owner had
deposited many years before. It was just such a discovery
that made me the owner of an object that I have kept
since I was a child. It is a rosary from Italy made of black
olive wood. On the crucifix is the date 1830. Uncle Dewey
said very likely it was brought to America by some
immigrant from Italy who was perhaps the owner of the
piece of furniture or maybe even a servant for the owner
of the piece of furniture.
Uncle Dewey eventually moved his shop from the
airport to the little building at the end of Old Dixie
Highway by the feed store. During, this time my other
brother Ted began his apprenticeship under Uncle
Dewey and would also become a marvelous transformer
of broken furniture.
The art of upholstery and afternoon rides are becoming
increasingly hard to find in our busy world, but it would
be so neat to have the Packard around just so I could
climb into its comfy seat and take an afternoon ride...just
for the fun of it.

Man gets three years in


prison for resisting arrest


A Madison man who was
"tazed" five times and broke his
collarbone during an altercation
with law enforcement officers
when. he violently resisted
arrest--at one time grabbing an
officer's gun--has been sentenced
to three and one-half years in
prison.
Shannon Dale McCurdy, 32,
pled guilty in court Monday, to
resisting arrest with violence,
battery on a law enforcement
officer and possession of drug
paraphernalia: In addition to the 42
months in prison with credit for 67
days in jail, he was sentenced to
pay a $1,000 fine; $370 for court
costs; and $350 for public defender
fees.
Before beginning his prison
sentence, McCurdy will also have
to face various charges pending in
Madison and Suwannee counties,
which, if found guilty, may add
additional prison time to his
sentence given here.
During the first week of
November 2006, Perry Police
Department Ptl. Gene Franklin
said he received a call concerning
a possible drunk driver headed into
the city on North 221.
Franklin and Taylor County
Sheriffs Office Dep. Scott
McKenzie arrived at the 221 Jiffy
at the same time, where they saw
the suspect backing his car into a


parking spot at the store.
The person who reported the
possible drunk driver arrived at the
store and told the officers that the
man, identified as Shannon Dale
McCurdy, 32,had just left 221 Gas
and Grill, where he almost got into
a fist fight with the clerk.
"The witness said he had to get
in between them to keep McCurdy
from jumping on the clerk. The
witness also said that another man
who was with McCurdy, was
outside on the pay phone during
this time, trying to find someone to
sell them drugs," Franklin said.
After arriving at the store,
Franklin said he spotted the
suspect, who was standing at a pay
phone with a beer on it.
While retrieving personal
information, for a warrants check,
Franklin said he spotted a large
knife protruding from McCurdy's
pants.
"At that point, I patted him down
for weapons and discovered, along
with the large knife, a smaller one
and a marijuana pipe," said
Franklin.
Dispatch also told Franklin that
McCurdy had two active warrants
out on him from Madison County,
and that officials with that
county said they would extradite
him.
"While I was talking with
McCurdy about the. warrants for

he appeared to be thinking.
"At that point, McCurdy told
me, 'Do you want to go?'. Again, I
warned him not to attempt
anything," added Franklin.
McCurdy then said, "Are ya'll
ready to run?", said McKenzie.
"He then began running north,
parallel to Hwy. 221.
"I grabbed McCurdy by his hair
while running and spun him
around," added McKenzie, "and he
continued to resist. I tazed him two
times during this part of the
altercation, after he continued to
fight back, resisting our efforts to
arrest him.
"McCurdy then used his right
hand to grab my service pistol. I
tried to turn away from his grasp
and told Ptl. Franklin that
McCurdy had his hand on my
pistol," added McKenzie.
"Ptl. Franklin took McCurdy to
the ground hard, to restrain and
remove McCurdy's hand from my
gun. Once on the ground, he
continued to- resist and pulled at
Ptl. Franklin's duty belt.
"I applied a third M26 TASER
burst to the side of McCurdy. Ptl.
Franklin also applied another
TASER drive stun," McKenzie
added.
When the officers attempted to
place McCurdy into a patrol car, he
Used his body strength to resist and
was drive-stunned again by.
McKenzie.
After the officers got McCurdy
to jail, he complained of a broken
collar bone. Doctors' Memorial
Hospital Emergency Medical
Services arrived and transported
McCurdy to DMH, where he was
treated for the broken bone.
McCurdy was then taken back to
the Taylor County Jail, where he
was charged with resisting arrest
with violence, battery on a law
enforcement officer and
possession of drug paraphernalia.
McCurdy is currently on
probation in Suwannee County for
resisting arrest with violence.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Logan Milam Jr. of Perry announce the engagement of
their daughter, Sarah Logan Milam, of Tallahassee to Zachary Tyler Scott,
also of Tallahassee, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Tyler Scott of Perry.
The bride-elect will graduate from Florida State University in the
summer of 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in art, and a minor is
psychology.
She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William 0. Brown of Perry,
and Mrs. Eleanor Murphy of Palm Harbor.
The prospective groom graduated from Florida State University in
August of 2006 with a double major in human resource and business
management. He is currently employed as the training coordinator for the
Florida Department of Environmental Protection in Tallahassee.
He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James William Lee, the late Joseph
L. Beach Jr., Mrs. Shirley Scott of Naples, and Mr. and Mrs. Morris J.
Scott of Perry.
A destination wedding, with a private ceremony, is planned for April,
2007. Formal invitations will be issued by the couple.

'Waxing Camellias' is

topic for Garden Club
Mary Maud Sharp of Tallahassee will be featured at next week's Perry
Garden Club meeting, demonstrating "Waxing Camellias" for members
and guests.
Refreshments will be served at 9:45 a.m. with the meeting following.
Sharpe is a retired chemist with the Florida Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services, and is affiliated with a number of horticulture
groups in the area. She is a member of the Tallahassee Camellia Club, the
.Tallahassee Area Rose Society, the Thomasville (Ga.) Rose Society and
the Florida Daffodil Society. Mrs. Sharp is also a ACS Camellia Judge,
and an ARS Horticulture and Arrangement Judge. She volunteers at
Goodwood Museum and Gardens.
According to Sharpe, the waxing process was' developed and
demonstrated by Martha Roberts, a longtime member of the Tallahassee
Garden Club. On Jan. 17, Sharpe will continue that tradition and
demonstrate the process for local gardeners.

"And I'm certainly not," Ketring
said.
"So what is the pleasure of the
council? Do we file a complaint
with the Public Service
Commission or talk with a lawyer?
We've agreed by consensus that we
are dissatisfied with their
response," she continued.
"Should we task Bob (Brown)


with contacting an attorney to see
what would be entailed with
breaking the franchise
agreement?" Cook asked.
"At least see it would take and
what the legal fees would be, and
I'll put that in the form of a
motion," Everett said.
The council passed the motion
unanimously and looks to re-
address the issue at its next
meeting, Jan. 23.
On Thursday, Brown said "the
council feels it has done all it can
do and wants to see what other


options are available."
One option which has 'been put
forward by Everett is for the city to


look at becoming its own power
supplier, much like its other utility
services of natural gas and water.

The second of four workshops to help teach parents about the dangers of
online predators will be held today. The seminar, which is hosted by the Florida
Network of Child Advocacy Centers, will be held at Joyce's Main Street Cafe at
12 noon.
Historical Society screens tourism video
The Taylor County Historical Society will host a screening of the new
promotional video (now airing on more than 100 PBS channels) promoting Taylor
tourism during its meeting Monday, Jan. 15. All members are encouraged to
attend; the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Liles to perform Sunday


Concert slated for Sunday
Buddy Liles will be in concert at the Perry Church of God on Sunday,
Jan. 14, beginning at 6 p.m.
A member of the "Florida Boys" for more than 25 years, Liles was the
recipient of the Marvin Norcross Award at the National Quartet
Convention in 1995, known as one of the most honorable awards in gospel
music. He also received the Favorite Bass Award given by "Singing
News" magazine and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Now Liles is pursuing his solo ministry.

A Precept study on Hebrews is christening the new year, with classes

Warner C. Wilson Jr., 86, of
Monticello, died Jan. 9, 2007, at
Archbold Hospital in
Thomasville, Ga.
Born May 16, 1920, Mr. Wilson
was a native of Cincinnati, Ohio,
and lived in Monticello for 29
years. He retired from Procter and
Gamble in Perry.
He was a member of Christ
Church-Episcopal, a founding
member of the Jefferson County

brothers, Richard Wilson and
Robert Wilson.

Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at

"The City of Tallahassee has one
of the highest utility rates in the
State of Florida," Marks said.
Although Chairman Lisa Polak
Edgar stated that the board could
only consider information on the
need for the power plant and that
the potential environmental and
health impacts would be handled
by another, agency, she allowed
many speakers to talk about those
issues. This prompted a standing
objection from attorney Gary, V.
Perko representing the power
group.
Richard Furman, a retired
engineer from Perrine, spoke at
length about the benefits of
integrated gasification combined
cycle power plant versus the
supercritical pulverized coal
technology proposed by TEC.'.
Furman also spoke before the
Taylor County Commission during
a hearing held last year on a pair of
comprehensive plan amendments.
Dr. Ron Saff, an asthma
specialist in Tallahassee, spoke
about the potential healthcare costs
associated with pollution from the
power plant and urged that they be
considered when determining
whether the proposed plant was the
most cost effective option.
He drew the ire of
Commissioner Matthew M. Carter
II, however, when he closed his
remarks with, "Commissioners
and chairman, if you have a


conscience, this is a relatively easy
decision to make."
"Dr. Saff, you are not suggesting
that the only way the
commissioners could have a
conscience is if they agree with
your perspective," Carter said.
"I resent your remarks about a
conscience," he added.
. Several people spoke on the
increased rail traffic expected from
the plant, including Bay County
Commissioner Alex Robinson.
Commissioner Carter agreed that
the issue was a growing concern in
the state, but was outside the scope
of the commission.
Of the speakers, some 13 were
Taylor County residents, including
Christine Thompson and Charles
Poppell.
Quoting from the Florida
Comprehensive Plan, Thompson
said, "Every Florida resident has a
right to breathe clean air, drink
pure water and eat nutritious food.
"My family and I ask you to
have mercy on our county and
deny the request for this plant," she
said.
"The thought of having a
pulverized coal plant of this kind,
that may not even be needed, is a
great concern to myself and
others," Poppell said.
Other Taylor residents who
spoke included Gale Dickert; John
Dickert, Carole Taitt, Diane
Whitfield, Janet Monroe, Lynne
Reynolds and Polly Perkins.
The commission took testimony
from 25 witnesses Thursday as
part of the evidentiary portion of
the hearing.

said that since both incomes were
lost the moment the crash
occurred, Jones is struggling with
day-to-day bills and the cost of her

buying food or buying gas to drive
to your doctor," the spokesperson
said.

Christmas Storey


When the Florida Times-Union
hit the stands on Dec. 19, many
readers learned of R. Travis
Storey's generosity to children
throughout the city.
But it wasn't news to Earlene
Wheeler of Perry, for Storey is her
son, and she's known of his
generosity for years.
"He doesn't like the spotlight,"
she said, almost apologizing, "but
I'm very proud of him."
Karen Brune Mathis featured
Storey, who is a 52-year-old
accountant, in her column in the
Metro section of the newspaper,
detailing the creation of The
Children's Christmas Party in
Jacksonville.
Flash back to 1998 when Storey
and his wife, Margaret, learned
that the long-held Dorcas Drake
Christmas Party needed more toys
for needy children. Margaret
suggested donating a couple of
bicycles, arid Storey went
shopping. But he forgot about the
bikes. So when Margaret reminded
him, they went together and
bought 100 bicycles--spending a
little more than $5,000. As Mathis
reports, "Storey and his wife don't
have children, but if they did, he
guesses he'd be spending that
much on them." So the cheerful
gift was extended, and the giving
continues.
In 1999, plans for the Drake
party didn't materialize and Storey
took the lead in organizing what is
now known as the Children's
Christmas Party. He called four
friends for $5,000 donations:

McGehee, Gate Petroleum Co.
President Herb Peyton and Times-

Martin.

Since then, Storey has
established a board of directors
and an organizational structure that
should keep the party going. This
year, cash contributions alone
came to $180,000. At the party,
some 40,000 toys and 560 bicycles
were distributed to about 11,000
children.

professional and volunteer roles
for the success of this holiday
venture. But they may not know
about his humble beginnings.
He is a 1972 graduate of Taylor
County High School. Storey
earned both his undergraduate and
Master's degrees in accounting
from the University of Georgia,
and worked with Artlur Andersen
in Atlanta, Ga., before moving to
Jacksonville in 1988 with the
Andersen firm, and joining KPMG
in 2002. He also serves on the
boards of Dreams Come True, the
Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra
and the United Way of Northeast
Florida. Or as Mathis suggested,
"He rubs some influential elbows."
While the praise and credit are
not his motivation, he's not
discouraged by nay-sayers, either.
Perhaps there are individuals who
take advantage of the party, but
Storey maintains, "The good you
do significantly overcompensates
for that."
The Times-Union was correct:
it was a Christmas Storey, to be
sure, and one worth repeating.

an ambitious $7.4 million
fundraising campaign for the
United Way, and momentum
continues to build. The tune,
organizers say, is only getting
better.
Tri-Eagle and Land Shark Lager
are teaming up to present a special
benefit concert featuring Jimmy
Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band
on Feb. 10 to benefit the United
Way of the Big Bend at the
Tallahassee-Leon County Civic
Center.
Tickets for this one-time event
go on sale Saturday, Jan. 13, at the
Civic Center box office or through
Ticketmaster outlets.
"There are few entertainers that
have the on-stage charisma of
Jimmy Buffett and we couldn't be
more pleased to have him entertain
for the United Way," said Ken
Armstrong, president of the United
Way of the Big Bend.
"Much of the United Way's work
is about fund-raising, of course,

The 19th annual "Live! At
Dowling Park" Artist Series at
Advent Christian Village (ACV)
will host its premiere concert of
2007--"An American Tapestry,"
featuring Donna Wissinger, flutist,
and Joy Myers, piano
accompanist--Friday, Jan. 19,. at ...
7 p.m. in the Village Church.
This concert includes a
repertoire of well-loved tunes from
various eras and genres of
American music. The duo will also
perform in the Magnolia Dining
Room at Good Samaritan Center
on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m.
Wissinger and Myers performed
together at ACV's first bi-annual
Coffee Concert last spring. During
that performance of mostly.
baroque repertoire, Myers.
accompanied Wissinger on
harpsichord as well as piano.
Wissinger has performed at
ACV several times through the

Series. She has been heralded by
the New York Times as a "flutist of
rare gifts." She made her debut at
Carnegie Recital Hall in 1984. In
