Armed man causes lockdown, standoff
Tim Casey / Alligator Staff
Alachua County Fire Rescue officers prepare to load Marshall Lynn Sunderland, 81, into an am-
bulance after an armed standoff at 1926 NE Ninth St. Monday afternoon.

An 81-year-old Gainesville man
suffering from dementia caused the
lockdown of the middle school across
the street from his house after he
threatened to shoot his son and a po-
lice officer Monday morning.
After nearly seven hours of nego-
tiations, an Alachua County Sheriff's
Office SWAT team used a Taser
weapon to subdue Marshall Lynn
Sunderland, who locked himself in his
home at 1926 NE Ninth St. He threat-
ened to commit suicide several times.
The incident began at about 7:10
a.m. when Sunderland threatened to
shoot his adult son Roger after an ar-
gument about Sunderland being put in
a nursing home.
An officer from the Gainesville
Police Department met Roger, whose
age was not released, outside the
home. Sunderland followed, threaten-
ing the GPD officer with a revolver.
Moments later, the SWAT team sur-
rounded the home, and GPD blocked
off Northeast Ninth Street and locked
down Howard W. Bishop Middle
School, forcing more than 300 students
and staff to wait in the gymnasium.
There was no direct threat to those
inside the school, GPD spokesman
Sgt. Keith Kameg said, but officers
took no chances.
Since class began at 9:10 a.m., fewer
than half of the 887 students enrolled
were in attendance as many parents
were notified of the situation, said
Alachua County School Board spokes-
woman Jackie Johnson. She said the
situation inside the school was "very
stable, very calm."
"Even though this person
was elderly, it doesn't change
the fact that he threatened a
police officer."
Sgt. Keith Kameg
Gainesville Police spokesman
Sunderland's mental illness caused
him to continually forget conversa-
tions with police who were trying to
get him safely out of the house, Kameg
said.
He added that when Sunderland fi-
nally walked out of his house at about
1:35 p.m., he didn't understand why
there were more than 35 police cars
outside.
When Sunderland didn't comply
with requests from officers, "ultimate-
ly he was Tased," Kameg said.

UF suspends fraternity
By LYNDSEY LEWIS

UF's Greek Judicial Board placed
Kappa Alpha Fraternity on suspension
until May 2006 for numerous hazing
charges at a hearing Monday evening.
The board also imposed other punish-
ments on the fraternity, which included
conduct probation through 2007, com-
munity-service requirements and new-
member education programs.
UF's Beta Zeta chapter of the frater-
nity was suspended by the fraternity's
national office in late Summer. The
chapter was represented at the hearing
by regional fraternity officials and a local
alumnus.
"I know in the bottom of my heart
that this is a good group of men," said
Blair Bailey, the fraternity's province
commander who represents each of the
state's Kappa Alpha chapters.
"The leadership within the

vice president did not want,

"The leadership within the chapter

not want, encourage (or) allow theft,"
he said, referring to the hazing allega-
tions that surfaced after three pledges
were caught by University Police while
transporting stolen signs to the fraternity
house in the back of a pickup truck.
The pledges later told UPD of-
ficials that some fraternity members
instructed them to steal the signs, which
later spurred separate hazing accusations
against members of the organization.

State could stoke hotline
By JULIA CARVALHO
Alligator Contributing Writer
A catch-all phone number for emergency
and social services may soon be available to
all Floridians.
State Rep. Ed Jennings, D-Gainesville, and
Sen. Evelyn Lynn, R-Ormond Beach, intro-
duced a $5 million bill to provide a hotline
for emergency services to all counties, said
Sharon Spann, Jennings' legal assistant.
Expansion of the Florida 211 Network, a
24-hour call centers for crisis relief, disaster re-
sponse and general community services, was
proposed in the state legislature Monday.
So far, the system only serves 36 of 67
Florida counties and won't expand to North
Central Florida until February. The bill also
seeks for counties collaborate during disasters.
Since the network's establishment by the
Florida Legislature in 2002, one phone call
provides a "one-stop shop" for information
on food banks, clothing, shelters, job training
and other social services,
Spann said.
She added that volun-
teers looking to work in
their communities also can
call the number.
Florida's 211 call centers
helped more than 100,000
Jennings Floridians impacted by
the 2004 hurricane season.
However, Jennings said he hopes the expan-
sion will help serve even more residents.
"The representative saw last year that a
lot of confusion could have been alleviated if
we'd had these systems statewide," she said.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT
Tuition fee hike maxed out
By DAVID COHEN
Alligator Writer
dcohen@alligator.org
Tuition fees may climb 95 cents per credit
hour, the maximum legal increase, starting
Summer 2006 following the recommendations
of the UF Fee Committee.
The Activity & Service Fee, which funds
Student Government's more than $12 mil-
lion budget, may increase 60 cents, while the
Health Fee may go up by 35 cents per credit
hour, for a total of about $1.2 million.
The Health Fee includes a 30-cent per-
credit-hour increase for the Student Health
Care Center and a 5-cent boost for the UF
Counseling Center.
Committee Chairman Dave Kratzer said
2006-07 is going to be a "tough year, and there's
nothing we (the committee) can do about it."
Student Government asked for an 84-cent
per-credit-hour A&S Fee hike alone. Student
Body Treasurer Lindsay Cosimi said there is a
potential for student-organization budget cuts
because more organizations are requesting
money, and utility and salary costs have risen.
Sixty-eight percent of the Reitz Union's
budget is funded by A&S Fees, and recre-
ational sports, also heavily reliant on the fee,
are expecting up to a 40-percent increase in
utilities costs.
SHCC requested a 68-cent per-credit-hour
increase, or $880,000, anticipating increases
in prescription drug prices, medical supply
costs and service fees. The number of students
visiting the center has declined by about 3,000
since 2002-03, but a 2005
patient satisfaction survey
showed an overall satisfac-
tion rate of 97 percent.
Cosimi said the center
did not account for roof and
air-conditioning problems
with the Infirmary.
Cosimi "I think they're a mess,"
Cosimi said.
The Counseling Center proposed an 11-cent
per-credit-hour increase in part because some
forms of counseling saw a 26-percent jump.
The University Athletic Association was
not granted its request for a 30-cent per-
credit-hour raise to fund a new undetermined
women's sport.
The proposed 95-cent fee markup will go
before top SG and university officials before
it is reviewed by the Board of Trustees, the
university's highest governing body, later this
year.

The fourth annual International

"The main idea is for people to
become aware of other cultures," said
Myrna Cabrera-Rivero, coordinator of
the multicultural student center.
Although there is not an activity
scheduled every day during the month,
activities were designed to help SFCC
students to "do something different."
Cabrera-Rivero said she encourages
students to participate in any of the
events to learn something new.
"I want to show students that the
world is not just the continental USA;
that there's something beyond those
borders," Cabrera-Rivero said.
SFCC has had more than 100 coun-

currently has more than 1,500 multicul-

UF junior Kate Allinson gets inspiration from copies of her illustra-
tions for a children's book at her apartment Monday evening.
"Illustrating the book was a
good experience for me to have,
and I really enjoyed doing it,"
Kate, a digital arts and sciences
major, said. "My mom offered to
pay me, but of course I said no."
One page of the rhyming
children's book reads, "Thunder
roared with a huge downpour,
as I hid my face upon the floor.
Lights went out and the house
grew dark. The only thing I could
do was to bark!"
Amy, a former teacher and
mother of five from Longwood,
said the process of putting the
book together was a true family
project that was fun and also ed-
ucational and meant something
special to their family.
"Writing the book was kind of
like a natural thing," Amy said.
"I sat down after everyone had
left, wrote 10 paragraphs and
sent them to Matt, who added
more."
Amy plans on contacting el-
ementary schools and volunteer-
ing to start reading the book to
young children.
"Ever since I was little, she
always read to us and wanted-
to write a children's story that
was fun and interesting," Kate
said. "She's always wanted to do
something like this."
The Allinsons got the book
copyrighted in January, and
Amy said Trafford Publishing
Company was able to have it
completed in three months.
"I love drawing and art, and
I have always been interested in
being creative and looking at the
world differently," Kate said.
The book is 24 pages long
and targeted for ages 0 through
7 years. It is available for $12 on
the Trafford Publishing Web site,

The moral of the story is
"stay close to the ones you love
because you never know what's
going to happen, and the winds
may change," Kate said.
Pet Rescue starts
new home project
By KARl M. TARR
Alligator Contributing Writer
Almost 5,000 animals were put to sleep last year at the
Alachua County Animal Shelter, but the donation of a three-bed-
room house to Gainesville Pet Rescue may give more animals a
chance at a longer life.
About 30 supporters of the organization donned hard-hats
and shovels for the groundbreaking ceremony Monday morn-
ing at the new house at 5403 SW Archer Road.
Gainesville Pet Rescue is a nonprofit organization working to
save animals from being euthanized at the shelter.
Pet Rescue Executive Director Cheryl Gibson, who has been
with the organization for 10 years, said she, remembers when
only 100 pets were saved each year. Last year the organization
saved 891 animals. This year, the goal is more than 1,000.
"With this new space we can save more pets. The sky is really
the limit," Gibson said.
Instead of keeping the animals in cages, the organization has
developed a foster care program, where volunteers take animals
into their homes and care for them until they are ready for adop-
tion, Gibson said.
Around "It gives us a chance to learn about the pets
GailnSVille before we put them up for adoption," she said.
Anthony Aulisio, a local dermatologist
whose sister is on the board of directors for the organization,
donated the house unexpectedly.
"He just called me up one day and asked if I would be inter-
ested," Gibson said.
The house is already twice the size of Gainesville Pet Rescue's
current facility on Tower Road. Blueprints taped to the wall
show an additional 1,680 square feet will be added to the back.
Gibson showed those who attended the event around the
house and explained future plans. She said she hopes to open
the house by spring.
Money for the renovation will come from donations through
the organization's Raise the Woof fundraiser, which has raised
$38,000 of its $50,000 goal.
"We are very blessed to have great sponsors in our commu-
nity," said Raquel Garcia, the organization's media coordinator.
Those who donate will have a chance to have a room in the
new house named in their honor, she said.
Since the house is in a residential area, it had to have special
approval from the county to be used by Gainesville Pet Rescue.
"There was no controversy, and I was thrilled to do it," said
County Commissioner Paula DeLaney, who has two cats and a
dog.
DeLaney said by 2011, Alachua County is hoping to be a "no-
kill" county, meaning shelters won't be able to euthanize healthy,
adoptable animals.
"I'm very proud that our county is stepping up," she said.

The officers did take Sunderland's

The fraternity is inactive at UF, but Bailey
proposed a plan to reorganize the UF chapter
gradually through the process of receivership,
which would have fraternity alumni operate
the chapter on a temporary basis.
"[Receivership is] not always dealing with
things such as hazing. It may be financial,"
Bailey said to the board. "It is something that's
utilized when chapters do need help."
The Florida State University chapter of
Kappa Alpha operates under receivership,
Bailey said, and the process can last any-
where from two months to as long as two
semesters.
"The two brothers that were responsible
for sending [pledges to steal] have been sus-

tell them to go and get these signs."
Interfraternity Council Vice President
Logan Murphy pointed out that ac-
Greek cording to reports, Kappa Alpha's
Life president said he neither advocated
nor discouraged the theft, but Bailey
said he felt the event resulted from a lack of
sufficient supervision of the pledges.
Murphy said the plan to instate a system of
receivership could still work at UF, even with
the punishments.
"Technically, they could be back in their
house by (next) Fall," he said.

Fine lines
Judges must be overly
cautious about bias
Despite the obvious tension between the media and the
government, a blanket of similarities covers the jour-
nalism and judicial professions.
Both journalists and judges should be unbiased, both col-
lect information from all sides, and both rely on the public's
trust.
But whatever our job, we all have interests and goals out-
side the office. And we all have a past filled with examples
of our discrimination and choices. The more ambitious and
active we are, the more defined we are on paper.
No one can step back far enough from society to look at
any situation with a truly neutral eye. In reality, we learn to
discern the false from the true through experience. If we kept
journalists and judges locked up in a windowless room, they
still would have preferences.
Discrimination comes from experience, and its existence is.
integral to our society, from the courts all the way down.
Experienced journalists use their knowledge on an issue to
dig through all that is superfluous and false. Novice journal-
ists, without any biases, initially aren't able to discern between
truth and lies.
Judges are similar.
We would ideally be able to trust judges to put aside their
passions and look at all evidence with an open mind. We
would be assured that outside pressures wouldn't cause a
judge to skew his reasoning. And we would always hope they
could use their experience as a tool for their decisions.
But the reality is some judges let baseless prejudices get in
the way of fair assessment.
So where do we draw the line?
Judge Bob Perkins was excused last week from presiding
over Rep. Tom DeLay's case after DeLay's attorneys found out
that Perkins had contributed more than $5,000 to Democratic
or liberal causes since 2001.
We don't doubt that Perkins has previously dealt with cas-
es involving Republicans, but in this instance, the entire case
revolves around politics DeLay is being tried for money
laundering during a political campaign.
Since we simply can't trust all judges to put aside their poli-
tics, judges must report any possibility of a conflict of interest.
Perkins' decision to not remove himself from the case leads to
further suspicion about his intentions.
Judges should be able to be unbiased for any case. But since
that ideal doesn't universally stand, judges, just like journal-
ists, must disclose every action that even hints at partiality.
And so we're led back to Gainesville, where Circuit Court
Judge Robert E. Roundtree Jr. resigned from a UF Levin
College of Law advisory board after ruling in a case involving
the university.
Roundtree is bound to have connections to the commu-
nity and the university. In the microcosm of Gainesville, it's
almost impossible to find a judge not tied to the university.
Roundtree received both his degrees from UF, just like
seven of his 11 peers on the Circuit 8 court, which serves
Alachua and surrounding counties. Ten of those judges have
at least one degree from UF.
So maybe being on a UF board that meets once a year
doesn't make Roundtree partial, but he made a mistake in
not completely evaluating his UF connections before taking
the case.
We can't blame judges for having roots to their commu-
nities, but we can blame them for not being up front at all
times.
Amid the increasingly heated political division in this
country, judges bear a greater responsibility to reveal the
truth, whether about themselves or about the law.

Rioters will get nov
hat started out as the retaliation of angry teenag-
ers against police turned fatal Monday when a
61-year-old man died from injuries inflicted by
rioters.
Although their anger is warranted, especially with
France's overt job discrimination, violence will not dis-
solve prejudices.
The situation has turned into blatant pandemonium,
affecting about 300 towns across the nation. Allegedly
triggered by the accidental electrocution of two boys who
were fleeing from police, the violence is no longer a reflec-
tion of this original incident.
Instead, the turbulence is the culmination of deep-rooted
discrimination, joblessness and poverty among immigrants
from North and West Africa and their French-born children.
And the aggression shows no signs of abating.
Police can try their best to quiet the rage and arrest as
many teens as jails can hold, but government intervention is
the only way to end the unrest permanently. Rioters won't
get attention unless they end this futile malevolence.
When the situation requires a group to operate within
the means of a civilized, society, rioting is never the answer.
France isn't dealing with the same kind of cowardly ter-
rorism the United States witnessed on Sept. 11, 2001. This
form of civil unrest is a direct result of the government's
inability to recognize the mounting tension between class-
es and address racial discrimination, specifically among
blue-collar workers.
So will this be the French version of the American civil
rights movement of the 1960s? In order to be recognized as
such, rioters need to form a cohesive and unified front and
cease using violent means to prove their point. The American
civil rights movement was successful because of the unwav-
ering conviction of an oppressed people to utilize nonviolent

Amy Eisinger action even in the face of unjust bru-
Left Out tality. If rebels continue to follow their
letters@alligator.org current method of action, they will do
nothing more than agitate police and
give reason for revocation of what few
social rights they have gained. Organization, composure and
a concise list of objectives are key for movements like this.
We've seen the effectiveness teenagers and college students
can have on society in the last 50 years, and it can work in a
country as civilized as France.
We've also witnessed the shortcomings of a non-unified
front with the current Iraq anti-war movement. Disputes
about the removal of troops exist even among those "on
the same side."
But if immigrants and minorities in France are truly
concerned about the oppression they face daily, they need
to organize themselves in such a way that the government
will consider them a serious political threat.
The problem with the current violence, besides the
widespread damage, is that teens have allowed- them-
selves to become the focus of a political battle between
Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and Interior
Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, both of whom are hoping to
succeed Jacques Chirac as president.
Due to the savagery, the focus is turning from a human
rights statement into a game of who can quiet the restless
youth most efficiently.
Once the anger subsides, the amateur revolutionaries will
need to take a long look at whether they've abolished preju-
dice in the workforce. Horrific images of burning cars and
charred buildings in Paris won't hide the fact that when the
smoke settles, rioters will find that nothing has changed.

Students who leave Gators games early embarrass university
This is an open letter to all who left the student sec-
tion early at Saturday's football game.
You should be ashamed of yourselves. This is
the Southeastern Conference. A two-touchdown lead
with more than four minutes remaining hardly.merits the
jingling of car keys, and it is certainly no reason to leave
the game before the clock reads 00:00. This stands even-
when the opposing team is \Irndcrbilt a team whose
total offense dwarfs that of the Gators.
For students to: leave early from a Southeastern
Conference football game is embarrassing.. We are not
Miami. Alumni who donate large sums of money to the
university get the opportunity to be put on a waiting list
for season tickets. But students go for $7 and have little or
no trouble obtaining tickets. The least we can do is stay
for the whole thing.

gotten any easier?
The players-stay all 60 minutes of every game because
they don't have the luxury of being able to leave early.
Face value for a student ticket is only $7, which perhaps
makes some students think they have-gotten their money's
worth by the third quarter. Or maybe they want to beat
the 15 minutes of traffic they might face if they left.at the
same time as everybody else. Or maybe there is a drink
special somewhere in G.aine.'. ill, on Saturday nights.

pretty sure that when the student section was named "The

On Nov. 26, the Gators will play their last home game
of the season. That means no more football at The Swamp

The final game of this season will be against the Florida
State University Seminoles. Let's show the players that
we care about them. Let's show them just how badly we

And in case you missed it, the Gators won Saturday's

Brown injury forces changes in Gators' secondary
By LOUIS ANASTASIS
Alligator Staff Writer
lanastasis@alligator.org
It's a good thing Reggie Lewis
has the memory span of a goldfish.
After getting picked on for most
of the Vanderbilt game Saturday,
Lewis told himself he had to make
a play.
"Everybody out there made a
couple of mistakes, including my-
self, so my thing was bounce back,"
said Lewis, who sealed the win by
intercepting quarterback Jay Cutler.
"Get amnesia real fast."
But Lewis' real challenge is still
four days away.
With starting cornerback Vernell
Brown out 4 to 6 weeks with a frac-
tured fibula, the Gators will call on
Lewis to control a passing attack led
by, of course, Steve Spurrier.
That's quite the assignment for a
player who was running routes as a
receiver instead of defending them
as a cornerback last season.
"I know they're going to come at
me real hard because I don't have
that much experience," Lewis said.
S"But my thing is I
have to come out
here and work
hard every prac-
tice. Then when
the game comes it
can be easier than
1 the practices."
Lewis Leading
Lewis' "Welcome
to the .Southeastern Conference
Party" is South Carolina quarter-
back Blake Mitchell. .The redshirt
sophomore has grasped Spurrier's
Cock-n-Fire attack so far, passing for
225 yards a game, second in the SEC.
While comeback Dee Webb will
likely cover South Carolina's Sidney
Rice, who leads the SEC with 90
receiving yards per game, it will be
Lewis who, if he starts, will defend
either freshman Kenny McKinley
or Syvelle Newton, both formidable
receivers.
"They're young but they're very
good players," Meyer said.
Meyer was unsure Mondayas to
whether he would start Lewis or not,
but the absence of another true shut-
down comer will probably mandate
the move. The coach has toyed with
the idea of moving safety Reggie
Nelson to cornerback, but Nelson
is a true safety who has found his
niche as a starter alongside Jarvis
Herring. In nickel packages, how-
ever, Meyer might play Herring and
Kyle Jackson at safety while moving
Nelson to nickel.

UF linebacker Brandon Siler is tackled by Vanderbilt's Steven Bright af-
ter recovering a fumble in the Gators' win against the Commodores.
When anything goes in a last-ditch effort to
come up with a fumble, life at the bottom of a
loose-ball pile isn't very pretty.
Just don't tell that to Brandon Siler, UF's very
own ball hawk on defense.
At the end of last year, Siler was tabbed as the
heir apparent to Channing Crowder at the mid-
dle linebacker spot. While Siler has been just as
good .at pressuring the quarterback, it has been
his difference-making ability when the ball is on
the ground that has pushed him to the top of the
Southeastern Conference in fumble recoveries.
Siler's ability to always be in the mix of both
rush and pass plays has catapulted him to the
top of the list. After Siler, no one in the SEC has
more than two"fumble recoveries.
"When you are always around the ball, things
happen and when it comes out you jump on top
of it," Siler said. "Some of it is luck, but you just
have to be around the ball."
Siler notched two recoveries in the Vanderbilt
game, both of which led to offensive touch-
downs. His first recovery of a fumbled snap
put the Gators in prime scoring position on the
Vanderbilt 14-yard line, but it was his second
recovery that allowed him to scamper for a 19-
yard return.
"I tried to take that one to the house, and I
thought I was slow too, but then I looked at it
on film and there were three yards in front of
me when I picked it up," Siler said. "I'm pretty
sure I'll get one to take to this house sometime
this year."
On the year, the Gators have forced a total
of 26 turnovers and are second in the nation in
turnover margin.

Spurrier gave
Gators swagger
teve Spurrier is more than a man in the
eyes of Gators' fans. Steve Spurrier is the
ideal.
And as Spurrier prepares to face the Gators
for the first time as South Carolina's coach, it's a
good time to remember that the O1' Ball Coach
has done a great deal for the football program
as a player and coach.
He brought the school its first Heisman
trophy award as a player, its first and last
Southeastern Conference
Championship, its only
national title and a fiery
personality that we may
never see the likes of
again.
Farzad Safi Spurrier made the
Farsza Sid Gators synonymous
Far's Side with winning and mold-
fsafi@alligator.org ed Florida Field into
"The Swamp," but more
importantly, he gave UF an unmatched image.
The so-called "swagger" that Urban Meyer
is desperate to bring back to Gainesville began
when Spurrier started dropping 71 points on
the likes of Vanderbilt, just because he felt like
running up the score.
Spurrier was an incredibly controversial fig-
ure who got into the heads of opposing coaches
and fans with his cocky attitude. Gainesville
folk still pine for his potent Fun-n-Gun offense,
what made him a legend was his brash person-
ality and untouchable wit.
In 1966, the Gators were in a tight game with
Auburn. In the final minutes, Spurrier led the
offense down the field into position for a field
goal to win the game. Spurrier a quarter-
back, not a kicker told coach Ray Graves that
he would kick the 40-yard field goal himself.
Unbelievably, Spurrier's arrogance paid off

Mincey: Lewis has to step up to the plate
SECONDARY, from page 15
As far as mental preparation goes, the secondary
won't hhve any cockiness to worry about.
"If you have to -look at positives, there will not be
overconfidence or a lack of preparation after what hap-
pened Saturday," Meyer said. "We were exposed and we
didn't play very well."
One player who might be able to help the secondary
is freshman Avery Atkins. The Mainland High (Daytona
Beach) standout built a reputation as one of the top cor-
nerbacks in the country but has yet to exceed his learn-
ing curve in his first season.
"He's a little bit like Markus Manson was earlier in
the year; he's a little bit'like Nyan Boateng on offense,"
Meyer said. "He just has not crossed the line and become
a major college football player yet."
Lewis, on the other hand, has one game to prove his
worth, to show he indeed can replace Brown.
"When somebody drops the rifle somebody has to
pick it up and carry it," defensive end Jeremy Mincey
said. "The game is in Reggie Lewis' shoes now. He has to
[pick up] the slack and he has to step up to the plate."
Leak, Manson honored with conference awards
FOOTBALL, from page 15
ceiver corps in the nation, injuries
to UF's receivers have forced several
true freshman to jump into the rota-
tion. With Dallas Baker likely out
for Saturday's game against South
Carolina after suffering a broken
rib and punctured lung while still
dealing with a nagging ankle injury,
Coach Urban Meyer has had to ad-
just accordingly.
Freshman Nyan Boateng had
one catch for 11 yards on Saturday.
He could be one of the receivers to
see increased playing time if Baker
can't play in the future.
"Nyan Boateng played decent
Saturday and he's a guy that needs
to continue to step up and go,"
Meyer said. "I look around the
conference and I see other freshman
receivers playing and I kind of chal-
lenged [them] today."
THIS AND THAT: Chris Leak was
named the SEC's Offensive Player
of the Week on Monday. Leak led
the Gators with three passing touch-
downs and two more on the ground.
Running back Markus Manson, who
scored his first career touchdown
and had 179 all-purpose yards, was
named Freshman of the Week ...
For the first time this year, no
members of the defense were in the
Champions Club.
And despite scoring two touch-
downs against Vanderbilt, receiver
Chad Jackson was also left off the
list while Manson, Kestahn Moore,
six offensive linemen, Jemalle
Cornelius, Tate Casey and Leak all
made the list.
FARZAD, from page 15
and he nailed the game-winning kick against the Tigers.
He was also beloved by fans and media for his refreshing
press conferences in an otherwise uniform world of politically
correct coach-speak. Here are a few classic comments:
In 1991, a terrible fire in Auburn's football dorm caused a
great deal of damage and destroyed 20 books. Days before the
Gators faced the Tigers, Spurrier commented, "The real tragedy
was that 15 [of the books] hadn't been colored yet."
Peyton Manning retuned for his senior year at Tennessee
in 1997, despite losing three games to the Gators. "I know why
Peyton Manning came back for his senior year," Spurrier said.
"He wanted to be a three-time Citrus Bowl MVP."
In 2001, UF's high-octane pass attack and Mississippi
State's top-ranked pass defense clashed. The result? UF passed
for 507 yards in a 52-0 rout. "Mississippi State was No. 1 in pass
defense coming in," Spurrier said. "They won't be going out."
Yes, the man who once dubbed Florida State as "Free Shoes
University" and claimed that you can't spell Citrus without "U-
T" had a way with words and winning.
So this weekend when the 01' Ball Coach meets the New
Ball Coach, I wouldn't be surprised if Gators' fans are a little
confused about who to cheer for. Can you really root against the
guy who took you to the top?
"Call me arrogant, cocky, crybaby, whiner or whatever
names you like," Spurrier said while still at UF.E "At least they're
not calling us losers anymore."
No, Steve, and the Gators have you to thank for that.
