Education: Teacher of the Year

LMS' Johnson cares about students

by Patty Brant
Caloosa Belle
It was an evening honoring
those who are what the 2010
Florida Teacher of the Year Me-
gan Allen called "constructors of
society" teachers. For Hendry
County, the Golden Apple Teach-
er of the Year is LaBelle Middle
School's Karen Johnson. A Span-
ish I teacher and Media Special-
ist, she has been a teacher for
five years. During that time she
has learned well the lessons her
students had to teach, in turn al-
lowing her to become a better
teacher.
Each of the ten county Teach-
ers of the Year was presented by
a student or former student. For
Ms. Johnson, that student was
Chris Miller.
Determined to do a good job
for his teacher, Chris proudly told

the audience that before he had
Ms. Johnson he didn't know any
Spanish. Now he has a working
understanding of the language.
Amazingly, this is Ms. Johnson's
first year teaching Spanish. She

continues as the school's Media
Specialist.
During observation of Ms.
Johnson's class, judges noted
her obvious rapport with her stu-
dents and her "can do" attitude.

Man dies

in crash
Wayne P. Hull, 25, of LaBelle
died as the result of a crash on Ben
Hill Griffin Pkwy. north of Estero
Pkwy. in Lee County at 12:13 a.m.
Feb. 2. According to the Florida
Highway Patrol, Mr. Hull was south-
bound on Ben Hill Griffin Pkwy. as
a 2006 Volvo, driven by 16-year-old
Austin Hendry of Fort Myers, was
northbound. They were traveling
through a curve in the road. The
report states that Mr. Hull was
fleeing a previous crash and was
witnessed driving in an erratic and
possibly impaired manner.
He lost control of his 1997
Dodge pick up and swerved to-
ward the median. He began to
rotate counterclockwise, leaving
the roadway and entering the me-
dian, then entered the northbound
lanes and overturned. It became
airborne as it overturned and vault-

Davises, Puletti named 2010 SCF dignitaries

by Patty Brant
Caloosa Belle
The 2010 Swamp Cabbage
Festival dignitaries will be the
M.G. Davis Family as Pioneer
Family and Paul Puletti as
Grand Marshal.
M.G. Davis and his wife,
Daisy Touchstone Davis,
opened the LaBelle Trading
Post, a center of local business
for many years. The couple
met in Mississippi and mar-
ried in 1928. They soon moved
to LaBelle with Daisy's father,
Barry Touchstone, who ran a
sawmill.
Along with other pioneers

of the area, the family braved
hurricanes and the hardships
of life on the frontier. It was
actually Daisy who first started
the Trading Post at their home
on Hall Street, across from the
present day Don's Steak House.
It was later moved to SR 80 and
is now known as the LaBelle
Trade Center. She fed lunch to
sawmill workers on the family
porch. As the business grew,
it became the family's prime
business. It included trading
with Seminoles for hides.
Sometimes M.G. would take
several of his children down to
the reservation in a wagon and
later a truck, sometimes the

Seminoles would walk up to
LaBelle and camp out in back
of the store while they con-
ducted their trading.
Grand Marshal Paul Puletti
is currently the mayor of La-
Belle. He has been with the
Hendry County School District
for many years and was previ-
ously on staff at the Caloosa
Belle local newspaper.
The festival is scheduled for
Feb. 27 and 28. Country music
lovers will be thrilled that Bob-
by Bare is the featured artist at
Barron Park on Saturday, Feb.
27, after the parade.

ed over the front of the Hendry vehicle, but
did not contact it. However, debris from the
Hull truck struck the front and left side of
the Volvo. The truck slid on its roof to a final
rest outside the northbound lane. Mr. Hull
was ejected from the vehicle.
Mr. Hendry continued northbound to a
nearby fire station where he reported the
crash. Mr. Hull was pronounced dead at the
scene.

Deputy involved in crash
A Hendry County deputy was involved
in a traffic crash in the early morning hours
of Feb. 2. Only two minor injuries resulted
from the crash which, according to the Flor-

ida Highway Patrol, was alcohol related.
According to the FHP report, Clifford 0.
Earl III, 43, of Clewiston was traveling south
on SR 835 in a 2006 Dodge truck. He was
approaching Sgt. Donald P. Davis' patrol car
and another vehicle, a Crown Victoria driv-
en by Jose L. Sanchez, 27, of Belle Glade,
both properly parked on the west shoulder
of the road.
For unknown reasons, Mr. Earl failed to
stay in the southbound lane and veered off
the road, almost striking the sheriff's depart-
ment vehicle. Sgt. Davis and Mr. Sanchez
had to jump out of the way to avoid being
struck.
Mr. Earl's truck impacted the patrol car's
front end. The patrol car was pushed back-
ward into Mr. Sanchez's vehicle.
A passenger in the Sanchez vehicle, Juan
Carlos Ramos, 47, of Miami, and Mr. Earl
both suffered minor injuries. Mr. Earl was
taken to Hendry Regional Medical Center.

Black History Month: Irene Morgan

A decade before Rosa Parks refused to
give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Ala-
bama, Irene Morgan displayed similar defi-
ance in Virginia. In 1944 Morgan, a 27-year-
old mother, boarded a Greyhound bus on
her way to consult a doctor in Baltimore.
She sat in the fourth row from the rear, in
the designated "colored" section. But when
more white passengers boarded, the driver
ordered her to move farther back. Morgan
said no. At that point a sheriff was called,
but when he served Morgan with an arrest
warrant, she tore it up. The sheriff dragged
her kicking and screaming off the bus and
took her to jail.
Morgan was fined $100 for resisting ar-
rest and $10 for violating Virginia's segre-

gation law. She pleaded guilty to the first
crime but appealed the second, and the
case went to the U.S. Supreme Court. One
of Morgan's attorneys, Thurgood Marshall
of the NAACP, argued that segregation on
interstate travel was an improper burden
on commerce. The court agreed by vote
of 7 to 1, and the case became the statu-
tory basis for subsequent actions to inte-
grate public services, such as the Freedom
Rides.
In 2001 President Bill Clinton awarded
Irene Morgan the Presidential Citizens
Medal.

Teacher Continued From Page 1

For Ms. Johnson, her most memorable
accomplishment in teaching is: ". .. always
the most recent time I was able to match a
student with a book that made him or her
come back and ask for more or when I've
been able to provide just the right resources
to a teacher to enrich the classroom expe-
rience." Either way, it's always about the
student. Ms. Johnson received a plaque, a
$750 award she will use to take her Span-
ish class on a field trip to the Salvador Dali
Museum in St. Peterburg and a $250 award
for LaBelle Middle School.
Megan Allen of Hillsborough County,
Florida Department of Education/Macy's
2010 Teacher of the Year is one of four fi-
nalists in the National Teacher of the Year
program this year. A dynamic speaker, she
relayed the story of a special gift from one
of her students. It was a rock, she said. The
student told her that it represented some-
thing very special since, he told her, "School
is my rock" an experience that taught her
just how important school is to many chil-
dren when they have little else to look for-
ward to.
Mayor Paul Puletti and longtime Hendry
County School District employee told the
crowd that teaching is a "valued profes-
sion." This is his 26th year as an educator.

Mardi Gras is getting close in New Or-
leans. And after Super Bowl XLIV (that's 44
for non-Roman readers)
this will be one huge party.
Actually Mardi Gras in NO
is a season, not just a day.
The parades start early. In
fact, some of the parades
were delayed on the 7th
so they didn't conflict with
or distract from the Super
Bowl. From the pictures
on TV the party began on Fr. Alan
Bourbon St. as soon as it Kelmereit
was certain that the Saints
were this year's champions. This year will
likely be a particularly boisterous and happy
party season, what with the Saints winning
the Super Bowl for the first time ever.
The party comes to an end, officially, on
Feb. 14, Mardi Gras day. Ash Wednesday, the
next day, is the beginning of Lent. Actually, the
party in NO goes on all year long. Sometimes
it's bigger and louder than at other times. And
I suspect that many of the partiers either don't
know or don't care about Lent.
To get back to home, how about you?
Does Lent fit into the pattern of your spiritual
life? I know a lot of churches don't bother
with Lent because it's too something-or-
other for them. But that is a loss to them and
their people. Traditionally, Lent is a season
of preparation for the great celebration of
Easter, It is a time given to reflection on our
spiritual condition. Are we really living a life
that is pleasing to God?
In my own life, I find that there are things
I do and think that are not pleasing to God.
Why do I do them? Because that is our pro-
pensity as human beings to do what pleas-
es us rather than to do what pleases God.
We're all in that boat together. Fortunately,
God is a forgiving God. When we acknowl-
edge our wrongdoing and decide not to re-
peat them, he is quick to forgive and restore
us. And Lent is a time we can do just that.
There are some traditions in which peo-
ple give up something for Lent, often things
they particularly like. Sometimes people fast
at certain times during the Lenten season.
Disciplines such as this can be valuable if
we use them to help us focus on strengthen-
ing our relationship with God. If we fast, we
could use the time usually spent eating as a
time of prayer, or we could use the money
normally spent on food to help feed or clothe
people in need. There is a newer tradition of

adding something during the Lenten season.
I know some people who volunteer with
agencies that provide help to others. Some
spend additional time in study and prayer.
Others visit nursing homes to visit with the
residents. There all sorts of things we could
do that would help us too refocus ourselves
on God.
If God has not been a part of your life,
this might be the time to discover how much
better life is when God is a genuine part of it
- I'm not talking about lip-service or going to
church on Christmas and Easter here. Lent
begins Feb. 17, Ash Wednesday, and ends
on the Saturday before Easter. This could be
the most significant change ever in your life
you're willing to face the challenge.

Witch's Brew

by Pudge Lehman
Most of us without young children no
longer have safe homes for kids. When
you have very young
kids visiting, loop a
heavy rubber band
around the cabinet
knobs. Loop around
one knob and give it a
twist then loop around
the other. Be sure it is
tight enough not to open wide enough for
small hands to reach into the cabinet.
Plastic jugs of any size are the best free
containers. Cut out the sides to suit your
needs, leaving some inches at the bottom
of the hole to prevent stuff falling out. One
of my favorites was to use a big one, cut a
hole in the front and store your potatoes
and onions { use separate jugs for each. }
you have a convenient handle to haul it up
to the counter.
Wise sayins': Seat belts are not as con-
fining as wheelchairs.....or
I've reached the age where Happy Hour
is a nap.....or
Money can't buy happiness...but some-
how it's so much better to cry in a Cor-
vette than a Yugo.

Cowboy wrestlers prepare

for district tournament

Senior Team Captain Armando Ayala II
(16-7) placed a solid third place at the Ryan
Bidwell Memorial Tournament Saturday at
the 160 lb. weight class. Early in the season
Armando went 5-0 at the Evangelical duals
finishing undefeated for the tournament. Ar-
mando has shown
true dedication this
year dropping down
from the 189 lb. wt. I /
class last season to
be more success- .| .. .A
ful in his attempt to
make it to the State
Finals.
Co-Captain, Sr.,
Corey Brown (15- Armando Ayala
11) placed third at
the Okeechobee Classic and went 4-1 at the
Evangelical Duals. Unfortunately a series of
injuries has made the season difficult for
Corey, having to pull out of the Ryan Bidwell
Tournament after the second match this
past weekend.
"Armando and Corey have been wrestling
tough," working hard this year to improve
on their take downs and riding skills. They
must continue to work hard this week if they
plan to make it to the State Finals Feb. 19th
and 20th." Coach Ayala said.
Senior Crispin Tovar, 135 lb. wt. class,
rounds out the senior class with a record of

Andy McAvoy at the

bright spots during
the regular season,
going 5-0 at the -
Evangelical Duals.
"We are down
to five wrestlers at
the end of the sea-
son, I am proud of Crispin Tovar
each and every one
of them. Wrestling is tough, the weak are

the strong push forward and improve men-

Ayala.

West Glades Elementary goes all out for science

On Monday, January 11, West Glades
School held the school's science fair for
5-8th grade students. Students had been ex-
perimenting diligently, with the help of teach-
ers Kevin Thomas, Andie Tindall and Jean-
nie Pearson, to find answers to questions
in a variety of areas such as what materials
tend to help tomatoes grow faster and what
tends to be harmful to their growth, which
peppers tend to be the hottest, the extent
to which WI-FI is used in the LaBelle area,
and other topics of interest to the students
of West Glades. Students in grades 5 7 ex-
perimented with tomato plants graciously
donated by Mobley Plant World using stakes
donated by Ace Hardware. The results of
their hard work and questioning were dis-

Community supports walkathon

In spite of hard times, the generous
people of LaBelle participated in Lucy's
Angels for Breast Cancer Care Third Annual
Bosom Buddies Walkathon to raise money
to provide funds for free mammograms for
residents of Hendry and Glades Counties.
Prizes for largest team went to Curves of
LaBelle with 22 members, and most money
raised by an individual was $150 by Owen
Farmer.
To date, Lucy's Angels has paid for 150
mammograms for residents of Hendry and
Glades counties.
Because of the continued support of this
community, we have now granted a further
$15,000 to continue this program because
there is no doubt that early detection saves
