choice

critized
By Jose Jesus Zaragoza
Clewiston News
As the various elected members
of the Port of Palm Beach weighed
their choices for a site which will
house a planned inland port, stake-
holders in Western Palm Beach,
Hendry, and St. Lucie counties
hoped to land the coveted deci-
sion.
Despite concerns from nearly
every corner of the political and
governmental spectrum, as well
as demonstrations by environmen-
tal groups, the port selected a site
near South Bay, owned by Florida
Crystals, as the location for the de-
velopment.
"We are very pleased by the Port
of Palm Beach Commissioners' se-
lection of Florida Crystals as their
partner in the pursuit of an Inland
Logistics Center at the Okeelanta
site," said Gaston Cantens, Vice
President of Florida Crystals.
But not everyone feels the same
way.
Leading up to the vote, and in
the days that followed it, represen-
tatives of the failed bids and envi-
ronmental groups have publicly
opposed the choice, arguing that
the vote means very little in light of
issues raised by the state, the part-
nering ports, and the idea that the
project concept is pinned on future

At issue is a proposed 3,500 project to

can begin.
Prior to the vote last Thursday, the state
had asked the Port of Palm Beach to delay
its decision, citing a need to further study
the concept, while neighboring ports con-
tinue either exploring their own options or
calling all current plans inadequate.
Much of the criticism stemmed when
it appeared that the port would favor the
South Bay site.
A partnership by Hendry County, Hilliard
Brothers and U.S. Sugar had representatives
promising as much as 8,000 acres of land
near Clewiston toward the project, with no
environmental issues, and the same access
to U.S. 27 as the South Bay site. U.S. Sugar
announced the site in May, urging port offi-
cials to consider the vast railroad infrastruc-
ture already in place.
That site ranked third, behind the St. Lu-
cie proposal.
Richard Grosso, representing Everglades
Law Center, hinted at the possibility of an
extended legal battle over the selection of
the Florida Crystals site.
"It just seems as though they have not
had a real level-headed look at all this,"
Grosso said after the port board's decision
Thursday, according to published reports.
"This is not the final word on the subject
at all."
Ashley Tripp, the president of the LORE
Alliance of Palm Beach County, and a resi-
dent of Belle Glade, defends the port's deci-
sion with the argument that jobs are desper-
ately needed in the communities of South
Bay, Belle Glade and Pahokee.
"Our organization resolved a year and
half ago that we wanted it at the Florida

Crystals site," she said. "We still stand be-
hind it."
According to Ms. Tripp, there is a need
for economic diversity in an area tradition-
ally hit hard by the economy.
She takes issue with groups like the Si-
erra Club, which has criticized the South
Bay site for its close proximity to Everglades
Restoration efforts.
"To think it would hinder Everglades res-
toration is absurd. That's a false statement
to make other people get on their bandwag-
on," she said.
"My thought to the environmentalists
is that you have to think of man above the
environment. What suggestions do they
submit that will help the people of the
Glades?"
But the environmentalists aren't the only
groups that Florida Crystals must contend
with -- the company has also pointedly re-
ferred to the governor in its communica-
tions.
"We are hopeful now that the local
governments have spoken Governor Crist
will put aside his recent differences with
Florida Crystals and not continue to cause
economic harm to the residents of western
Palm Beach County," said Cantens.

the U-Save parking lot), the easement will
provide space for generations to enjoy the
park and honor America's veterans.
LaBelle Mayor Paul Puletti praised the
folks at U-Save as good corporate neighbors
and community supporters. He said the
easement was a reality because of the Bev-
ers Family and U-Save corporate good will.
One Whisper Creek resident and Viet
Nam veteran attending the ceremony said,
"This park means a lot to me. It's dedicated
to people who served, it's an appreciation
for anybody who served on active duty." A
US Navy veteran, "River Rat" and member
of the "Junk Fleet", he is now a member of
numerous veteran's organizations: VFW,
DAV, American Legion, AmVets.
A veteran of four campaign, he served
on a 40' sampan in the Junk Fleet. He and

his buddies delivered supplies for troops
and "whatever they told us to do" a typical
comment from veterans committed to do-
ing the job at hand.
The park has come a long way in a com-
paratively short time. Just last July it was
dedicated about a year after construction
began in earnest. The park features bricks
inscribed with the names of local veterans.
The American Legion continues to sell these
honorary bricks. You can call the Legion at
675-8300 for information.
A beautiful eagle statue currently stands
at the center of the park. It was donated by
Rock Enterprises. The center will soon be
marked by an eagle mosaic, donated by
Fort Myers Harley-Davidson. Brian Smith
of En-site designed the memorial. A monu-
ment will stand for each of America's 20th
Century wars, tributes to the dedication and
bravery of young Americans.
Proud of his company's support of La-
Belle over the years, Mr. Bevers comment-
ed, "This is neighbors helping neighbors,
friends making friends."

Community flocks to tree-lighting ceremony

by Glenda Wilson
The Hendry Regional Convenient Care
Center was the hub of activity on Tuesday,
December 1st, when area residents came
out to witness its first community Christmas
tree-lighting ceremony.
The event began as an affordable hospi-
tal foundation fundraiser (called "Lights of
Love") whereby members of the commu-
nity could purchase a Christmas tree light
for $5.00 to honor/memorialize friends and
loved ones. The foundation then placed the
names of those individuals, along with the
donor names, into a Christmas program and
distributed them during the ceremony.
The Carlson Memorial United Methodist
Church choir made the evening even more
heart-warming with their wonderful chorus
of Christmas carols. There was much rever-
ence when, as the highlight of the evening,
the beautiful, 14-foot Eagleston Holly tree
(purchased by Dr. Darayes Mobed) was lit
with hundreds of colorful lights that com-
memorated the Lights of Love individuals.

Christmas is always a special time of the
year for people the world over. Our hearts
are stirred anew each December to think

that God would enter our

to people of all lands; "I
love you and I have come

Few experiences help
us to understand the joy
of Christmas more than
experiences that often
come with children. Re-

My husband and I had been happily mar-
ried (most of the time) for five years but
hadn't been blessed with a baby.
I decided to do some serious praying
and promised God that if he would give us
a child, I would be a perfect mother, love it
with all my heart and raise it with His word
as my guide.
God answered my prayers and blessed
us with a son. The next year God blessed
us with another son. The following year, He
blessed us with yet another son.
The year after that we were blessed with
a daughter. My husband thought we'd been
blessed right into poverty. We now had four
children and the oldest was only four years
old.
I learned never to ask God for anything
unless I meant it. As a minister once told me,
"If you pray for rain, make sure you carry an
umbrella."
I began reading a few verses of the Bible
to the children each day as they lay in their
cribs.

I was off to a good start. God had entrust-
ed me with four children and I didn't want to
disappoint Him.
I tried to be patient the day the children
smashed two dozen eggs on the kitchen
floor searching for baby chicks.
I tried to be understanding... when they
started a hotel for homeless frogs in the
spare bedroom, although it took me nearly
two hours to catch all 23 frogs.
When my daughter poured ketchup all
over herself and rolled up in a blanket to see
how it felt to be a hot dog, I tried to see the
humor rather than the mess.
In spite of changing over 25,000 diapers,
never eating a hot meal and never sleeping
for more than 30 minutes at a time, I still
thank God daily for my children.
While I couldn't keep my promise to be a
perfect mother I didn't even come close...
I did keep my promise to raise them in the
Word of God.
I knew I was missing the mark just a little
when I told my daughter we were going to
church to worship God, and she wanted to
bring a bar of soap along to "wash up" Je-
sus, too.
Something was lost in the translation
when I explained that God gave us everlast-
ing life, and my son thought it was generous
of God to give us his "last wife."
My proudest moment came during the
children's Christmas pageant. My daugh-
ter was playing Mary, two of my sons were
shepherds and my youngest son was a wise
man. This was their moment to shine.
My five-year-old shepherd had practiced
his line, "We found the babe wrapped in
swaddling clothes." But he was nervous and
said, "The baby was wrapped in wrinkled
clothes."
My four-year-old "Mary" said, "That's not
'wrinkled clothes,' silly. That's dirty, rotten
clothes."

A wrestling match broke out between
Mary and the shepherd and was stopped by
an angel, who bent her halo and lost her left
wing.
I slouched a little lower in my seat when
Mary dropped the doll representing Baby Je-
sus, and it bounced down the aisle crying,
"Mama-mama."
Mary grabbed the doll, wrapped it back
up and held it tightly as the wise men ar-
rived.
My other son stepped forward in a bath-
robe and paper crown, knelt at the manger
and announced, "We are the three wise
men, and we are bringing gifts of gold, com-
mon sense and fur." The congregation dis-
solved into laughter, and the pageant got a
standing ovation.
"I've never enjoyed a Christmas program
as much as this one," laughed the pastor.
"For the rest of my life, I'll never hear the
Christmas story without thinking of gold,
common sense and fur."
"My children are my pride and my joy and
my greatest blessing," I said as I dug through
my purse for an aspirin.
Jesus had no servants, yet they called
Him Master. Had no degree, yet they called
Him Teacher ... Had no medicines, yet they
called Him Healer... Had no army, yet kings
feared Him... He won no military battles,
yet He conquered the world... He commit-
ted no crime, yet they crucified Him... He
was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today. Feel
honored to serve such a Leader who loves
us.

Hendry Regional going tobacco free .

By Glenda Wilson
On January 1, 2010, Hendry Regional
Medical Center will institute a 'no tobacco,
smoke-free' policy inside the hospital, on all
its sites and campuses, and on all associated
parking lots. Currently, employees, medical
staff and visitors must go outside the facili-
ties to use tobacco products, but as the New
Year begins, tobacco use will be prohibited,
both inside and out. Signs will be posted
around the hospital campuses to alert visi-
tors of the change.
A stop-smoking team, consisting of hos-
pital employees, began working months ago
to identify and implement ways to ease the
transition for people who were using tobac-
co. The team concurred that "The new poli-

cy is the right example for healthcare provid-
ers to set for the community. Our hospital
wants to provide an appropriate healthcare
environment."
The Centers for Disease Control and Pre-
vention estimates that each year nearly one
in five U.S. deaths result from tobacco use,

Revisit film land in the Glades

Hollywood glamour came to Southwest
Florida when Gypsy Rose Lee, Burl Ives,
Peter Falk, and a youthful Christopher Plum-
mer filmed "Wind Across the Everglades"
in 1957. They all bunked down in the Ever-
glades City Rod & Gun Club while shooting
on location in the swamps and town.
Movie-making is not new to Florida. It
goes back to the early 1900s when emerging
cities tried to attract producers with the lure
of a perfect climate and real scenery.
Between then and now, crews have in-
vaded for "Distant Drums", "Gone Fishing",
"Just Cause", and "Adaptation". Even Woody

Woodpecker got in the act for "Everglade

Sierra Club and Conservancy of

SWFL to file legal challenge

Washington, D.C. Citing the federal
government's failure to conserve and
protect the Florida panther and its habi-
tat, as required under by the Endangered
Species Act, the Sierra Club and the Con-
servancy of Southwest Florida today sent
a notice letter to the US Fish and Wild-
life Service (FWS) and the Department
of Interior of their intent to file a legal
challenge. The notice gives the federal
agencies sixty days to respond.
The letter from the two organizations
states that "The Florida panther was list-
ed as endangered in 1967, in large part
due to habitat loss.
Forty-two years later, the panther still
does not have protected critical habitat,
even as development continues to ac-
celerate in south Florida. To fulfill its
conservation mandate under the ESA
[Endangered Species Act], and to avoid
violating the basic strictures of the APA
[Administrative Procedure Act], FWS
must finally designate sufficient critical
habitat for the panther."
On January 21, 2009, the Conservan-
cy of Southwest Florida petitioned FWS
with a formal request that it designate
three important regions in south Florida
as critical habitat.
These regions known as the "Pri-

Zones, embrace the core of panther
habitat in the region. They extend from
the Everglades through the Big Cypress
National Preserve to the Caloosahatchee
River, including vital migration corridors
to South Central Florida, relatively un-
disturbed core habitat, and areas with
important habitat restoration activities
and opportunities. A broad coalition of
citizen's groups including the Sierra Club
joined the Conservancy in a second peti-
tion on July 23, 2009, which reiterated
the need to protect the habitat described
in the Conservancy petition. FWS has
not acted upon the petitions.
"Unfortunately, despite the pressing
conservation needs outlined in the peti-
tions," the Sierra Club and Conservancy
of Southwest Florida said in its letter,
"FWS has not acted to designate criti-
cal habitat and has not responded in the
manner and within the time period re-
quired by the ESA and the APA. Instead,
it has allowed the petitions and the
panther to continue to languish, even
as habitat destruction and other threats
to the panther's survival intensify."
Only 90-120 Florida panthers remain,
but 20 have been killed so far in 2009,
including 12 run over by cars.

Working for better vision
On December 16, Florida's Vision Quest sent its mobile vision testing unit to
LaBelle Elementary School. Thirteen students received free vision testing and
several of these students will receive glasses at no cost to them. Florida's Vi-
sion Quest is a non-profit organization that provides free comprehensive vision
exams and new glasses to insure that Florida's most vulnerable children can
see clearly enough to read. This team of vision experts conducted the vision
exams. From left: Dr. George Beckwith, Nola Humphrey and Donald Trentholm.

Christmas Eve tradition
The 33rd annual sharing of the Christmas
story will be given by Troy Avery at LaBelle
Assembly of God on Thursday evening Dec.
24, 7 p.m. There will be carol singing, can-
dlelight Holy Communion and a retelling of
the biblical story of Christmas. For more in-
formation call 675-0900.
50 plus years ago Clifford Avery as a
young father each Christmas Eve would tell
the Christmas story to his children just be-
fore they opened their presents.
Upon coming to LaBelle as pastors they
moved the story from their home to the
church and he would tell the Christmas sto-
ry to the families of the church each Christ-
mas Eve.
The torch is being passed to our younger
generation as Troy, the youngest of Pastor
and Kathy Avery's children, is asked to tell
the Christmas story.
The youngest children in the church are
invited onto the platform to hear the Christ-
mas story close-up and personal.
Everyone is invited to this special event
as we celebrate candlelight Communion,
joyous Christmas carols and the second-
generation of telling the Christmas story as
found in Luke and Matthew in the New Tes-
tament.

FPL gives tips to conserve electricity in cool weather

Heat your home at 68 degrees or cooler
with the thermostat fan switch on "auto." To
save even more, lower your thermostat to 65
degrees or cooler at bedtime or when you're
away from home. Don't forget to wear cozy
sweaters to stay warm!
Clean or change your A/C filter once
a month. Many homes in Florida use strip
heating in their air conditioning units, which
have to work harder to heat the house. A
clogged filter makes your A/C work harder
than it has to.
Reduce hot water temperature. Set your
water heater to the "normal" setting or 120
degrees, unless the owner's manual for your
dishwasher requires a higher setting.
Seal up leaks. Caulk leaks around win-
dows and doors. Look for places where you
have pipes, vents or electrical conduits that
go through the wall, ceiling or floor. Caulk
works best on small gaps. Your hardware
store should have products to close the larg-
er gaps.
Stay safe this winter. Do not resort to us-
ing a barbecue or camp stove for heat. Such
equipment is designed for outdoor use only
and presents significant safety hazards when
used in any enclosed or partially enclosed
setting. Besides the obvious fire hazard, they
can produce high levels of carbon monox-
ide a deadly gas that you cannot smell or
see. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak,
get to fresh air RIGHT AWAY. DO NOT DE-
LAY. Carbon monoxide can rapidly lead to
full incapacitation and death. If you experi-
ence serious symptoms, get medical atten-
tion immediately.
Visit www.FPL.com to learn more about
other ways you can save in your home, dur-
ing the holidays and throughout the year.

Spotlight on future scientists

Johnathan Pfriender shows his project "How Do Carbon Dioxide and Carbon
Monoxide Affect the Atmosphere" to fellow students Courtney Inman (whose
project was "Phosphorous in Water") and Kendrick Rivera (who submitted a
project called "Water Filtered with Rocks").

by Carol Grigsby
Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students
seized the opportunity to search for answers
to novel science mysteries by coming up
with a theory and then working for months
to develop a way to test it and determine
the outcome. Everything from inspiration
to procedure to project display were up to
the students' own creativity and dedication.
All entries were outstanding and the entire
school is very proud of everyone that par-
ticipated.
The science projects judged the most
inventive and pertinent to society this year
were:
First Place: Danny Keller (Also Best of
Fair), Tania Santiago, Courtney Inman, Jo-
anna Flores, Hugo Vargas, Nicole Rosito,
Alari Foutch, Yasmine Cortez, Glenn Burton,
Emma Yawn-White, Emileigh Eiden, Magali
Salinas, Michael Vasquez, Anna Lopez and
Victoria Bass.
Second Place: Logann White, Tracy
Dominguez, Caroline Johnson, Dakota
Santos, Michael Pepitone, Sujeivelis Rueda,
Kyle Rice, Frankie Vargas, Jason Banke, Jes-
sica Gonzalez, Kendrick Rivera, Chris Miller,
Thalia Compean, Dane Mourfield
and Miken Hyser.
Third Place: Katie Guerrero, Matthew
Reyna, Stephanie Johnson, Jordan Rice,

Kaitlyn Lawton, Becky Lapp, Paige Hunter,
Ezequil Juarez, Ryan Grant, Kylie Casten,
Blaine Howell, Katelyn Thorn, Albert Villa,
Baylen McCormick, and Alejandro Overa.
Honorable Mention: Melanie Lo-
pez, Diego DSantiago, Jarrad Miller, Aida
Arellano,Johnathan Salazar, Johnathan
Salazar, Jonathan Pfriender, Ernestina De-
ras, Donte Karr, Jennifer Lucas-Garcia, Cody
Barksdale, Alexis Ruiz, Marisol Diaz, Chloe
Harrington, Angel Hernandez, Stacey Carter,
Yarely Acevedo and Emma Cahoon.
Congratulations on all of your hard work.
We know that you will continue to thrive in
the future.
None of this would be possible if it wasn't
for the support of our wonderful commu-
nity. J & J Pharmacy, Family Eye Care and
the LaBelle Middle School's Science Club
sponsored the Science Fair, while eighteen
of our local scientists, doctors and other pro-
fessionals volunteered to judge the competi-
tion. I would like to express how extremely
grateful we are for your time and donations.
Because of the support offered by parents
and the community, these projects will most
definitely establish the framework for curi-
ous problem-solving young intellectuals
who will become successful in leading our
nation in the near future.

Caloosa Belle/Patty Brant
Magali Salinas, seventh grader at LMS explained her first place project on grow-
ing crystals to Assistant Superintendent of Schools Scott Cooper. Magali said a
TV special on huge crystals in Mexico sparked her interest in the subject.

McAvoy excels in national chicken barbecue competition

by Sonja Crawford
Andy McAvoy, Hendry County 4-H mem-
ber, achieves ninth place in the Nation in the
Chicken Barbeque Competition during the
National 4-H Poultry & Egg Conference in
Louisville, Kentucky, November 18-19.
Andy started his grill promptly at 8:45
am in the cold, windy, 50 F weather grilling
four chicken halves in the time allotment of
2 1/2 hours. Andy prepared his chicken with
a rub of Sweet and Smokey Grill Mates and
Mrs. Dash Mesquite Grill. During the last 20
minutes of cooking Andy sauced his chick-
en with KC Masterpiece original barbecue
sauce.
Approximately 10:30 a.m, Andy placed
his best two barbecued chicken halves in an

enclosed container displaying his contestant
number to the contest coordinator to be pre-
sented to a panel of judges to be scored for
cooking skills as well as sensory evaluation.
The cooking skills score sheet consisted
of equipment and utensils, appearance and
cleanliness, starting the fire, controlling the
fire, preparing chicken for grilling and bar-
becuing skill with a total possible points of
70. The sensory evaluation score sheet, 80
points possible, consisted of degree of done-
ness, appearance, texture, taste, as well as
after taste.
The final step in the contest was an oral
presentation. Andy's oral presentation titled
"Chicken: It's What's for Supper" consisted
of the broiler industry, inspection of poultry,

food safety, nutrition and barbecue safety.
Presentations were presented in front of a
panel of two judges with a maximum of ten
minutes to present.
Not only did Andy enjoy competing in
this event, he enjoyed meeting new friends
from across the nation.
The 4-H and Extension Staff is very proud
of Andy's accomplishment. Hendry Coun-
ty 4-H would like to thank the Florida 4-H
Foundation for sponsoring Andy to attend
the national competition.
For more information about the 4-H
Chicken and Turkey Barbecue Program,
please contact the UF/IFAS/Hendry County
Extension Service at 674-4092 or 983-1598.

Citrus growers approve research order

LAKELAND, Fla. (December 10, 2009)
Florida's largest citrus trade organization
said it applauds growers for making the
smart decision to continue funding impor-
tant disease research.
"This was a tremendous decision by Flor-
ida citrus growers as we continue to battle
devastating diseases such as greening," said
Michael W Sparks, executive VP/CEO of
Florida Citrus Mutual.
"With a landslide approval of the state
research order, it's clear growers under-
stand the urgency of the situation and that
research is the key to the future of our $9
billion industry.
"The new research structure gives us a
real boost as we search for short term and
long term greening solutions in the labora-
tory. This "yes" vote is another sign of this
great industry's resiliency and commitment
to doing what it takes to persevere."
The Florida Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services (FDACS) reported
that through a statewide referendum Florida
citrus growers overwhelmingly supported
continuing a state order that funds crucial
research.
The referendum asked growers if they
wanted to tax themselves up to 3 cents per
box of citrus to fund research.
According to FDACS, the results of the ref-
erendum were as follows:
-- Number of growers voting YES: 1,166
Number of growers voting NO: 363
-- Percentage of growers voting YES: 76
percent
-- Percentage of growers voting NO: 24
percent
-- Acreage represented by YES vote:
363,094
Acreage represented by NO vote:
53,577
-- Percentage of acreage represented by

YES vote: 87 percent
-- Percentage of acreage represented by
NO vote: 13 percent
For the referendum to pass, 51 percent of
the voting acreage representing 65 percent
of the voting grower entities had to cast a
"yes" ballot.
Almost twice as many ballots were cast
this year compared to the last time the refer-
endum was held.
In November 1991, Florida citrus growers
voted to enact a research order commonly
referred to as the "box tax" to help fund re-
search.

as greening and canker appeared in Florida

OK to take 'big game snakes' during small-game seasons

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) reminds hunters that they
may continue to take Burmese pythons and
all other reptiles of concern within four South
Florida wildlife management areas (WMAs).
An FWC executive order, which went
into effect Aug. 29, gives all properly licensed
and permitted hunters authority to harvest
pythons and other reptiles of concern (In-
dian python, reticulated python, northern and
southern African rock python, amethystine or
scrub python, green anaconda and Nile moni-
tor lizard) on Everglades and Francis S. Tay-
lor, Holey Land, Rotenberger and Big Cypress

WMAs during specified hunting seasons.
Besides Big Cypress WMA, small-game
seasons are going on in the other three man-
agement areas, continuing through March 7.
On Big Cypress, general gun season is in, im-
mediately followed by the area's small-game
season, which goes through Feb. 1. In all four
WMAs, only a Florida hunting license and
management area permit are required to hunt
reptiles of concern from now through the end
of the small-game seasons.
With the exception of the small-game
season in the Deep Lake Unit of Big Cypress
(where only bows and muzzleloaders are al-

lowed), hunters may use shotguns, rimfire
rifles and handguns to take pythons. Nets and
snares also may be used, but no matter the
method of take, all reptiles of concern must
be euthanized on site.
Reptiles of concern may not be taken out
of the wildlife management areas alive and
must be reported to the FWC within 36 hours
by calling, toll-free, 866-392-4286, or going
to MyFWC.com and selecting "Burmese py-
thons" in the "Quick Clicks" menu. However,
any reptile of concern taken from Big Cypress
must be checked in at one of the area's six
check stations.

Hunters may do what they wish with the
reptile's skin and meat. However, according
to the National Park Service, mercury testing
on two dozen captured Burmese pythons in
Everglades National Park revealed extraordi-
narily high levels of mercury in the meat.
Officials estimate there are thousands of
Burmese pythons in the wild in South Florida.
The FWC's goal is to contain the spread of
these pythons in the wild and prevent estab-
lishment of other reptiles of concern. Data
collected by hunters on these state-managed
lands will assist in preventing their northern
movement.
