Christmas Season: It's all about Peace

Boat Parade Magic
Robert and Terrie Thompson's sailboat, SV Wahine, was a crowd pleaser at the annual Christ-
mas Boat Parade Dec. 12. Barron Park and the Christmas oak made a stunning background
for the only two entrants in the annual event.

SR 80/US 27 renovations in 2010

by Patty Brant
Caloosa Belle
Hendry County commission-
ers must have been very good
this year they received an early
Christmas present that has them
smiling from ear to ear.
For years their hearts' desire
has been improving the safety of
the SR 80/US 27 intersection and
the four-laning of SR 80. With
each year the urgency became
more acute till the intersection is
now one of the most dangerous
in the state.
The emerging regional impor-
tance of this section of highway
has brought extra attention from
the Southwest Regional Planning
Council, Lee County and Florida

Department of Transportation
(FDOT) to bolster Hendry Coun-
ty's search for funding. Last week
commissioners received word
that the intersection has been
placed on FDOT's five-year work
plan for 2010.
Hendry County Commissioner
Tris Chapman said he was "in
shock" after the Dec. 8 commis-
sion meeting in which FDOT's
plan was unveiled. He said the
county has three areas of concern
with regard to the intersection:
1. Safety. That intersection
has become known as the #1
site for fatalities in all of FDOT
District 1, 83 percent of which
involve out-of-county residents,
especially those from Lee and

Palm Beach counties. In addition,
some 5,000 trucks travel through
Clewiston every day.
2. Economic impact. SR 80
and US 27 would be arteries to
the proposed inland port site in
Hendry County. The possibility of
an inland port in Hendry County
has many hoping for an econom-
ic advantage for this area.
These roadways are also part
of a critical regional corridor and
the state's Strategic Intermodal
System, which links the entire
state.
3. As a hurricane evacua-
tion route, these highways are
of great importance to the large
coastal counties.

More tax

deeds up

for bids
by Patty Brant
Caloosa Belle
The county has scheduled a
second tax deed sale to be con-
ducted next month. This sale will
be especially for 1,300 lots in Port
LaBelle's Banyon Village Units 10-
13 for 2006 and 2007.
The supplemental tax deed sale
is necessary because these deeds
were tied up in the Value Adjust-
ment Board and could not be sold.
The only other supplemental sale
in Hendry County was some 20
years ago and only involved one
property.
This sale will be the second
time Hendry County has set up
a tax deed sale online. Hendry
County went online with its tax
deed sale this year and, according
to Tax Collector Peggy Hampton,
was extremely successful, bringing
in some $900,000.
The parcels in question are all
owned by Country Homes and
Land in the Banyan Village Unit
10-13 portion of Port LaBelle, lo-
cated east of LaBelle High School.
The taxes are based on the 2006
and '07 property appraisals when
property values soared throughout
the state. Anyone interested in bid-
ding on the tax deeds will be able
to check the value of the properties
against the taxes owed.
Owners of the parcels, Country
Homes and Land (CHL) had filed
suit against the county contesting
the assessed values of those prop-
erties during those tax years. How-
ever, Tax Collector Peggy Hampton

said CHL never followed through on the suit
so she filed a countersuit. The Value Adjust-
ment Board has completed its work and the
judge allowed the properties to be freed up
for the tax certificate sale.
The online sale will be handled by Re-
alAuction. Anyone interested in biddng may
sign up online at www.hendrytaxsale.com.
Bidders may register to view information on
the parcels beginning Jan. 4. The sale will
run Jan. 11 through Jan. 29. Bidders must
put down a deposit on any property they are
interested in.
The 2006 gross tax amount on these
properties, without penalties and interest, is
$828,537.82; and $423,006.79 for 2007.
Ms. Hampton said minimum bids will be
the face value of the tax certificate on each
property plus fees. Totals will vary from lot
to lot. Purchasers will hold the certificate till
the owner pays the taxes or till the tax deed
process is complete at which time that prop-
erty will go up for auction. Any tax deeds left
unsold will become county certificates.

Highways
Continued From Page 1
At the Nov. 17 joint meeting in LaBelle
between Hendry and Lee's county com-
missions, Lee commissioners expressed
their willingness to leverage political clout
to keep it on the state's agenda for road im-
provement funding.
In an e-mail to FDOT District 1 Secretary
Stan Cann, Commissioner Chapman said,
"We were very surprised and thrilled at
the terrific news from Trinity (Scott FDOT
Community Liaison) at last night's BOCC
meeting. We really appreciate the atten-
tion that you and your staff have given to
dramatically improving the priority of these
critical projects. We are convinced that the
economic impact of the SR 80 expansion
will be important to our area; the emergen-
cy evacuation route will be enhanced and
most important this decision will reduce in-
juries and save lives. On behalf of the Hen-
dry BOCC and our community, we want to
express our most sincere gratitude and ap-
preciation."
FDOT's Debbie Tower commented, "We

were able to move construction of the inter-
section into next year. We're as excited as
you are to build this project" and explained
plans for the intersection,
She noted that the project has been on
FDOT's radar screen for some time and said
FDOT is also pleased to get funding for the
project.
According to Ms. Tower, as of July 2010,
$35.2 million in construction funding will
be available for the new interchange ($22
million from state safety funding and $13
million in federal assistance). Some $4.1
million in state money is earmarked to pur-
chase right-of-way.
Ms. Tower also noted that, with the
economy as it is, there is more competi-
tion in bidding for state contracts. With less
construction dollars in the system, costs are
coming in lower than estimates. "It's a dif-
ferentbidding climate," she said, "with more
bids and more competition statewide." Ad-
ditional monies are being returned to the
state and are being rerouted to projects. In
large part, she said that is what's making
much of this new funding available.

Interchange plans
Funding is now lined up for the intersec-

tion for fiscal year 2010-2011. The design
will to elevate SR 80 over US 27. Current
plans also elongate the approach onto US
27 from SR 80 from both directions.
The interchange will have a single lane
to the east, and a single lane to the west and
a ramp over US 27 with one lane routing
traffic from Clewiston onto SR 80W and one
lane routing traffic from Moore Haven onto
SR 80W Think of on/off ramps on interstate
highways. Traffic slows, rounding a curve to
merge with traffic. Ramps separate the left
turn movement from the right turn move-
ment. Currently, drivers heading onto US 27
from SR 80 must stop and judge oncoming
traffic before crossing the southbound lane
of traffic on US 27 to merge with north-
bound traffic. The same for traffic heading
westbound from US 27N onto SR 80.
She said the plan will manage traffic ef-
fectively because drivers will be able to use
the interchange safely. At this time, drivers
must stop as they approach US 27, look
across two lanes of traffic and judge traffic
flow, then pull out into traffic.
A big component of design, Ms. Tower
commented, is getting all permits in order.
SFWMD continues to purchase rights-of-
way for Everglades Restoration from USSC.

Officials are hoping USSC and SFWMD will
donate some of the necessary right-of-way.
Stormwater runoff pond sites are also
necessary for this type of project, which
also require property for rights-of-way.

Four-laning SR 80
Currently, FDOT crews are working on
SR 80 to Birchwood Parkway east of La-
Belle. Ms. Tower said that work is "under
way tracking toward completion. FDOT is
working closely with environmental organi-
zations to secure permitting."
There is $1.4 million available for right-
of-way from Birchwood Parkway to Dalton
Lane and several small projects (adding a
right turn lane at Palomino Drive in 2010-11
for $516,000 and a new right turn lane at
Indian Hills for $660,000) are also ready.
FDOT has $5.1 million for right-of-way
acquisition of the last piece of SR 80 from
CR 833 to US 27 lined up for 2013-14.
FDOT has been engaging the public in
these plans beginning with project Planning
Development and Environmental (PD&E)
Studies which are presented at public meet-
ings. Suggested alternatives go to the Public
Highway Administration and then to design
in approximately two years time.

Christmas cheer
We really missed the big Christmas in the
Park shindig this year. Too bad the weather
wouldn't cooperate. Maybe next year the
plan will be better. The boat parade was sad!
Even so, that sail boat was really something!
Felt bad for the humane society too. Tough
to give a party and nobody shows up.

Holiday tips for savings and safety

JUNO BEACH, Fla. Ranked No. 1 among
utilities nationwide in energy efficiency, Flor-
ida Power & Light Company is committed to
helping customers manage the energy they
use every day. In celebration of the season,
FPL is issuing weekly energy efficiency tips
through the end of 2009 to educate custom-
ers about ways they can save around the
house during the holidays.
FPLs Helpful Holiday Tips Part 1: Con-
serving While You Cook
It takes a lot of energy -both physical and
electrical -to prepare meals for family and
friends during the holidays. Whether you're
cooking Thanksgiving dinner for relatives or
baking cookies for an office potluck, keep
these tips in mind to minimize your electric-
ity usage in the kitchen:
Don't waste energy by unnecessarily
pre-heating your oven. Some foods, such as
bread and desserts, require preheating, but
holiday meal staples such as turkey and ham
don't.
Keep the oven door closed. Ovens lose
lots of heat when opened and require sig-
nificant energy to heat back up to the ap-
propriate temperature. Instead of opening
the door to check on your food, turn on the
interior light and look through the oven's
window.
Oven-bake as many items together as
you can. Although some items may cook at
different temperatures, many items can be
cooked at a standard temperature.
Use smaller appliances such as crock-
pots, microwaves and toaster ovens when
possible. These can be much more energy-
efficient for side dishes or small meals.
Match the size of your pan to the size of
the heating element. For example, when us-
ing an electric cook top, a 6-inch pan on an
8-inch burner will waste more than 40 per-
cent of the heat produced by the burner.
Choose glass or ceramic pans for the
oven. These pans heat faster than metal
ones and allow you to set the temperature
25 degrees lower than a recipe suggests for
the same cooking time.
When possible, coveryour pots and pans.
This can help cook your food more quickly
and keeps the cooking temperature higher,
which allows you to turn down the stove.
Only use as much water as you need in a
pot. Every extra drop requires more energy
to heat and increases the cooking time.

Letter to the Editor

The Proselytization process
As the ObamaNation process continues
it's "Shock & Awe" transformation of Amer-
ica, I would like to call your attention to that
well worn process, exercised in the Middle
Ages under the guise of "The Proselytization
Process."
Although the Middle Age campaign was
of a religious conversion bias, today's cur-
rent, ObamaNation, Progressive Party blitz-
krieg is designed strictly to proselytize every
legal and illegal citizen in the United States
while dismantling the Constitution and the
Bill of Rights.
As we enter into this past accepted most
holy and revered time of year, I would like,
on behalf of all true Americans to address
all my Progressive/Democrat friends as fol-
lows:
Please accept with no obligation, implied
or implicit, my best wishes for an environ-
mentally conscious, scholastically respon-
sible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-
neutral celebration of the winter solstice
holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable
traditions of the religious persuasion of your
choice, or secular practices of your choice,
with respect for the religious/secular per-

suasion and/or traditions of others, or their
choice not to practice religious or secular
traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally suc-
cessful personally fulfilling and Obamacare,
uncomplicated recognition of the onset of
the generally accepted, recessionary calen-
dar year, 2010, but not without respect for
the calendars of choice of other cultures
whose contributions to society have helped
make America great. Not to imply that
America is necessarily greater than any other
country nor the only America in the Western
Hemisphere with a staggering financial bud-
get deficit. Also this wish is made without
regard to the race, creed, color, age, physi-
cal/mental ability, religious faith or sexual
preferences, married or single of the partici-
pants, as you perfect your mantra of Political
Correctness, ad infinitum, while continuing
to ignore the clearly communicated displea-
sures of the American populace with your
Congressional spending orgies and "trans-
formation" of America.
To my Independent/Republican
friends: Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year!

New office opens for

Guardian ad Litem

A Grand Opening and Ribbon-Cutting cer-
emony this week for the Guardian ad Litem
Program and Voices for Kids of Southwest
Florida celebrated a two-year effort among
partners-Lee County, the State of Florida
and the Program.
A public-private partnership, the Guard-
ian ad Litem Program and Voices for Kids
of Southwest Florida, a non-profit agency,
operate as one entity to represent and sup-
port the best interests of Southwest Florida's
most vulnerable population-abused, aban-
doned and neglected children.
"Our goal has always been to represent
100% of abused children who need a Guard-
ian ad Litem child advocate, and with the
new office, and now we have hope we can
do it" said Circuit 20's Director, Frank Prado.
"About 25% of Lee County's abused children
still don't have an advocate, even with 250
volunteers.
The added space will enable us to move
forward with our 100% representation goal,
as well as serve a multitude of other needs
proximity to the Justice Center, reducing vol-
unteer and staff travel time, and adequate
parking and training space. It's truly been a
joint effort. "
The Guardian ad Litem Program is sup-
ported through partnerships with Lee Coun-
ty, the State of Florida and the private sector.
The Lee County Board of County Commis-
sioners and Guardian ad Litem staff estab-
lished a close working relationship on the
project and contributed over $111,000 in
funding to make the new location at 2075
West First Street, Suite 300, Fort Myers, a re-
ality.
The Boards' Facilities Management staff
did the work in-house to build out the space
and worked closely with the building's own-
er to coordinate numerous modifications.
Lee County Commissioner Brian Bigelow
served as Master of Ceremonies at the Grand
Opening event.
"It's important for all of us to remember
children who definitely need help and a
voice in their own futures-abused, aban-
doned and neglected children. The Guard-
ian ad Litem and Voices for Kids Program is

more volunteers are needed. Statewide, the

Church Briefs

Back to the 'barn' service
For the last two years, Caloosa Baptist has
hosted special Christmas service. The wor-
ship experience is rather unusual, or least
the setting is for a Sunday morning church
service. It is held in a barn. Dr. Les Morgan,
pastor, developed the idea to have a Christ-
mas service in a barn. "I thought about the
setting in which Jesus was born on the night
long ago. Of all the options that were at the
Lord's disposal whereby He could enter the
human race, He first breathed air into His
lungs in a stable. It was perhaps one of the
most unsterile and unlikely place for anyone
to be born. An animal trough was His bed.
Amazing! You cannot sit in a setting like that
and not be impressed with the depth of love
from the Lord Jesus."
Pastor Morgan continued, "You can't go
to a more "first-Christmas" setting than that.
In a barn is where it all started. The Savior
came to redeem people and display the love
of God. To demonstrate His passion for peo-
ple, He willingly was birthed in a barn."
The public is invited to participate in the
"Getting Back to the Barn" worship service
this Sunday, Dec. 20. It will be held at the
Calusa Cattle Stables, located on Highway
78 East, going towards Moore Haven. Signs
will posted along the highway. For further in-
formation regarding this of other ministries
of Caloosa Baptist, please call the church at
863-675-HOPE. The church is located 200
yards behind Flora & Ella's restaurant in La-
Belle.

Christmas Eve tradition
The 33rd annual sharing of the Christmas
story will be given by Troy Avery at LaBelle
Assembly of God on Thursday evening Dec.
24, 7 p.m. There will be carol singing, can-
dlelight Holy Communion and a retelling of
the biblical story of Christmas. For more in-
formation call 675-0900.
50 plus years ago Clifford Avery as a
young father each Christmas Eve would tell
the Christmas story to his children just be-
fore they opened their presents. Upon com-
ing to LaBelle as pastors they moved the
story from their home to the church and he
would tell the Christmas story to the families
of the church each Christmas Eve. The torch
is being passed to our younger generation as
Troy, the youngest of Pastor and Kathy Av-
ery's children, is asked to tell the Christmas
story. The youngest children in the church
are invited onto the platform to hear the
Christmas story close-up and personal. Ev-
eryone is invited to this special event as we
celebrate candlelight Communion, joyous
Christmas carols and the second-generation
of telling the Christmas story as found in
Luke and Matthew in the New Testament.

Understanding abdominal hernias

by Dr. Darayes Mobed, General
Surgeon Hendry Regional
Medical Center and LaBelle
Convenient Care Center
The abdominal hernia is a generic term
that covers many types of hernias such as
the inguinal hernia, ventral hernia, and the
umbilical hernia. Abdominal hernias are
tears in the wall of the
abdomen, which allow -
internal body parts to .
move into areas where .
they do not belong. '
What causes an Ab- ~ ,
dominal Hernia?
Most hernias develop
in weak spots of the ab-
dominal wall.
Hernias may be Dr. Darayes
present at birth or devel- Mobed
op over time.
Overweight individuals tend to suffer
more with hernias than those without added
weight.
Genetics, a person's family history, can
also play a significant role in whether one
develops or has a hernia.
Additionally, lifting heavy objects may
cause a tear or weakening of the abdomen.
Coughing or even straining while using
the bathroom can cause a hernia.
Hernias can develop at a point of previ-
ous surgical procedure.
Or aging can be a factor.
What to watch for
Often people are not aware they have a
hernia; there is no pain or discomfort. In
these cases, a hernia can be found through
a swelling or when an internal organ pro-
trudes through the abdominal opening.
Some individuals can push the organ back
into place, without any severe pain. In other
instances, people may experience severe
pain and may not be able to return the organ
to its original position.
When to contact your doctor
If you feel that you have a hernia, contact
your doctor immediately. If there is a bulge
in your abdomen that becomes larger, dis-
colored, painful, or if you are experiencing
a fever or vomiting, it is important to contact
a medical professional with the following
information:
Where the bulge is located,
When you first noticed the bulge,
Is it always visible, or does it go away?

What is the size of the bulge? Attempt
to measure the diameter or compare to an-
other object.
Is there anything that makes the bulge
appear larger or possibly go away?
Are there other symptoms that you
have?
What if surgery is required?
Once an abdominal hernia occurs, it tends
to increase in size. Initially, some individuals
choose to keep the abdominal hernia under
control with a truss. A truss is a support gar-
ment that is worn like a belt and keeps the
hernia from protruding. Ultimately, the only
cure for an abdominal hernia is surgery.
For most abdominal hernias, there are
two types of surgeries that may be per-
formed and are relatively simple. If the her-
nia is small with limited pain or discomfort,
the protruding materials can be returned to
their normal location; a few stitches will be
made in the wall of the abdomen, closing
the tear. In instances where the tear is too
large or the area too weakened, the surgeon
will place a synthetic patch on the abdomi-
nal wall for reinforcement.
Generally, hernia surgery is performed
on an outpatient basis, and you can return
home on the same day. You can expect
some tenderness and discomfort for a few
days before you return to normal activities.
When the surgery is completed, there will
be restrictions on what you can lift, until you
are completely healed.
Untreated abdominal hernias can lead to
severe complications. If part of the intestine
becomes trapped outside the muscles of the
abdomen, a blockage may develop. In the
worst cases, the blockage can cut off blood
supply to part of the intestine, ultimately
causing this section of the intestine to die.
Abdominal hernias appear in about 10%
of adults, and surgery is the only cure. These
types of hernias in children, though infre-
quent, are often congenital and need surgi-
cal repair. The good news is that the progno-
sis for recovery is excellent if the treatment
is completed in a timely manner.
