Think lighted parade
The LaBelle Lighted Christmas
Boat Parade is just over a month

New courtroom already filling need

On Oct. 30 members of the
20th Judicial Circuit gathered
to mark the opening of Hendry
County Courthouse's new court-
room. The state-or-the-art court-
room, which seats 40-50, is used
for non-jury trials, first appear-
ances and magistrate hearings.
The new area also has a judge's
chamber, an expanded prisoner
holding area, delivery area, VOP
hearings and for jury assembly.
The new courtroom has already
been booked for much of the


time. The space was converted
from the old County Probation,
SHIP and Veterans Service Offic-
es, all of which moved to Court-
house Square.
Florida State Rep. District 77
Denise Grimsley, who helped get
the Legislative Appropriation for
the renovation, was in attendance
along with numerous circuit and
county judges. Funding also came
from the county's fine and forfei-
ture fund. No ad valorem money
was spent on the renovation.
Remarks came from County
Commissioner Darrell Harris on


the Old Courthouse and from
Judge G. Keith Carey, who served
in LaBelle from 2000-04. He ob-
served that it was a "great day"
for the county.
The new courtroom is con-
nected with the entire circuit
through the Court Smart System.
Hendry County courts have
held 32 trials since January, along
with hundreds of pleas in over
600 criminal cases. The case load
has required judges to juggle
schedules, but are confident the
additional room will allow them
to better utilize time and space.

serving students in Hendry and
Glades Counties. Dr. Robert Jones
accepted the new leadership role
effective Nov. 1.
"This is an important time for
Edison State College and our com-
mitment to Hendry and Glades
Counties," said Dr. Kenneth P.
Walker, President of Edison State
College. "We carefully balanced
the needs of the community, the
students and the college. I feel
confident Dr. Jones brings a well-
qualified background to the Center
and will be welcomed by the stu-
dents he will serve."
Jones was instrumental in de-
veloping the relationship between
Edison State College and the
Hendry and Glades communities
throughout his tenure at the col-

Most recently Jones worked to secure
the purchase and move to the Center's
new location at 1092 E. Cowboy Way that
opened this Fall with an increased student
enrollment.
"The Center provides so many new av-
enues for student success," said Jones. "I
look forward to building upon the hard
work, enthusiasm and achievements that
have come from Edison State's partnerships
in Hendry and Glades Counties."
"The communities of LaBelle, Moore
Haven, Clewiston and Alva will benefit from
his exceptional experience in administration
combined with his long standing familiarity
with the local community," said Dr. Randall
Parrish, Edison State College Board of Trust-
ees Chairman and Hendry County represen-
tative. "His breadth of knowledge of these
communities provides a natural pathway
for expansion and new opportunities."
Leaders at Edison State College say they


feel strongly the Hendry/Glades Center will
continue to thrive and expand in the next
few years.
"I feel so confident the students at our
Center will thrive with the experience Dr.
Jones brings to the position," said Julia G.
Perry, Edison Board of Trustees member
representing Glades County. "This campus
will become an educational and cultural
center that will one day become home to
two and four year degree programs."
Edison has served Southwest Florida for
nearly 50 years with campuses in Lee, Col-
lier and Charlotte Counties.
The Hendry/Glades Center at Edison
State College serves approximately 500 stu-
dents each semester.
Dr. Jones has served Edison State College
since 1991. He holds a Doctorate in Educa-
tion from NOVA Southeastern, an MBA from
the University of Texas at Tyler and a Bach-
elor of Arts from the University of Texas at
Austin with a major in Economics.
He and his wife, Betsi have two daugh-
ters, Kate and Emily.

to the date of delinquency. The remaining
amount of tax due must be paid in full.
Partial payments may be accepted for the
current year's taxes only between Nov. 1,
2009, and March 31, 2010. A $10 processing
fee is applicable for each partial payment.
In addition, no discount is allowed for
partial payments.
The taxpayer will receive at least one
notice with the balance due, but it is their
responsibility to maintain a record for the
remaining balance.
Any remaining balance not paid before
April 1 will be delinquent and will be han-
dled in the same manner as any other un-


paid taxes a tax certificate on the property
could be sold at a later date.
At the tax collector's discretion, an un-
derpayment of $10 or less may be deemed
payment in full rather than a partial pay-
ment.
If a taxpayer makes a partial payment, it
will be distributed in equal proportion to all
applicable taxing districts.
Look for the application for partial pay-
ment on the back of your tax bill. A sepa-
rate application must be submitted for each
parcel.

Having fun. It's a tough job but some-
body's got to do it.
Most would agree it's a kid's job. This
Saturday, kids in LaBelle will have their
hands full taking care of business and the
folks at Seacost National Bank are doing
everything they can to help them out.
Kid's Fest is actually a fund raiser but
will have all the tools available for kids to
get down to business.
Think of Barron Park as a big ol' tools
box, kids, where you can get busy in the
bounce house and take your turn at lots of
different games. Bring your face and have
it painted, take a cakewalk and keep your
nose to the grindstone getting lots of free
stuff. Just come and get it!
The Department of Children and Fami-
lies, Guardian Ad Litem program and the
Children's Garden of LaBelle will have
booths crammed with great stuff to help
kids do their job.
Members of the Hendry County Sher-
iff's Office will be on hand to help ensure
kids' safety with fingerprint kits. The Dance
Company will jazz up the day with some
high energy routines.
Just a $2 admission, entitles you to a
yummy hamburger, chips and soda. A few
booths will charge minimal fees for their
good stuff (like sand art), but there'll be


lots of free stuff for hard working kids. The
nice folks at the bank are planning Kid's
Fest as an annual event, to benefit a differ-
ent kids' program every year.
Having fun should be every kid's job,
but some have special challenges. This
year Hope Hospice Kids Care Program will
be the recipient of Kid's Fest proceeds.
The Hope Hospice Kids Care Program
provides services for kids who are dying,
seriously ill or experiencing grief.
The program offers Pediatric Hospice
Care for children with life threatening ill-
nesses; Partners in Care: Together for Kids
provides palliative care for children; and
Grief Support and Counseling, which in-
cludes support groups, has one-on-one
sessions and bereavement camp for kids.
Care is holistic and includes emotional,
spiritual and practical support as well as
medical care. The entire family is the focus
of their approach.
So, remember. Saturday, Nov. 14, kids
go on the clock at Barron Park at 10 a.m.
with a 2 p.m. quitting time. Between those
hours, kids will be expected to keep their
noses to the grindstone while the adults
offer a supporting hand for children when
they need it the most.

Hog farm, horse racing denied

At their Oct. 27 meeting in LaBelle, Hen-
dry County commissioners denied the rezon-
ing request by Pioneer resident Felix Grana
to change his rural residential property to a
PUD or planned unit development. He had
wanted to expand his hog operation into a
commercial venture.
Code violations led to the application,
Complaints included excessive numbers
of animals, failure to obtain a permit for
structures, using an RV as a living unit and
slaughtering animals.
The commissioners ultimately denied the
request, 4-0. Commissioner Kevin McCarthy
noted that the property was in the wrong
location for the specified use. He said there
were a "whole list" of things done wrong
but that the location was the primary reason
for the denial.
Mr. Grana's neighbors, Luis and Caroline
Rabelo said they were relieved at the vote.
They had complained about the smell from
the property and slaughtering.


No horse racing in Felda
Another zoning request this one to al-
low heavy recreational use of a parcel in
Felda, was also denied. Ignacio Soto had
wanted to use 48.2 acres to put on rodeos,
horse shows, races and such. His request
would have required a special exception by
the county.
The Local Planning Agency had approved
the application with conditions. However,
members of the Felda Civic Community As-
sociation did not support the application.
There biggest concern was that the number
of people attending events there would be
much higher than the 200 stated on the ap-
plication. At least one Felda resident recalled
an event there several years ago she said
disrupted the lifestyle of the neighborhood
with noise, traffic, gambling and alcohol.
Residents also said similar events can be
held at the LaBelle Rodeo Grounds. Sheriff
Steve Whidden cautioned against small un-
regulated horse racing which can attract ele-
ments like alcohol, gambling and drugs.


Arrest reports


LaBelle
William Clayton Corbitt, 29, was arrested
Nov. 8 and charged with robbery by sudden
snatching without a firearm or weapon. Ar-
resting officer was Sgt. Olvera.
Alex Eligio Cedillos, 25, was arrested Nov.
8 and charged with lewd and lascivious be-
havior victim is 12-16 years of age, offender
is over 18. Sgt. Olvera was arresting officer.
Romeo Garcia, 26, Juan Majica, 23, and
Edgar Guterrez, 27, were arrested Nov. 8
and charged with aggravated battery with a
deadly weapon. Another man, Jose Fernan-
do Godinez, 24, was also charged with ag-
gravated battery with a deadly weapon but
also with possession of cocaine with intent
to sell, manufacture, deliver etc. schedule
II and smuggling contraband into a deten-
tion facility. The arrests came after deputies
responded to Latino's Night Club on SR 29
and found two men bleeding in the parking
lot. Deputies stopped a vehicle matching the
description of the one leaving the premises
and the passengers were identified by wit-
nesses. The victims had been struck with
belt buckles, fists and were kicked. N. Kirk
was arresting officer was officer.
Christina Stephanie King, 17, was arrested
Nov. 7 and charged with a nonmoving traffic
violation operating a motor vehicle without
a license first offense and vehicle grand theft
third degree. Deputy Harrynarine was arrest-
ing officer.
Oscar Raya, 23, was arrested Nov. 6 and
charged with possession of cocaine and
possession/use of narcotic equipment. Ar-
resting officer was Sgt. Olvera.
Earnestine Uvonne Tolbert, 44 was ar-
rested Nov. 6 and charged on a warrant with
VOP: uttering a forged instrument and grand
theft from Polk County. K. Herrera was ar-
resting officer.
Juan David Martin, 32, was arrested Nov.
4 and charged on a warrant with VOP: felo-
ny or community control. A. Lewis was ar-
resting officer.
Leonardo Zavala Rodriguez, 23, was ar-


rested Nov. 4 and charged with possession
of counterfeit driver license/identification
and possession of cocaine. Harrynarine was
arresting officer.
Santiago Ovando, 28, was arrested Nov. 3
and charged on a warrant as a fugitive from
justice. K. Herrera was arresting officer.
Kevin James Burke, 20, was arrested Nov.
2 and charged with nonmoving traffic viola-
tion attaching registration, license plate not
assigned, nonmoving traffic violation driving
with a suspended license habitual offender,
carrying a concealed weapon firearm and
larceny grand of firearm. Sgt. Olvera was ar-
resting officer.
Perry Allen Green 46, and Allison Dar-
lene Hemphill, 41, were arrested Nov. 1
and charged with larceny $20,000-$100,000.
They are accused of stealing items includ-
ing a homemade trailer, brass bushings and
parts for harvest equipment. R. Perian was
arresting officer.
Tomas Cirilo, 37, was arrested Nov. 2 and
charged on a warrant as a fugitive from jus-
tice from Collier County. Sgt. M. Stevens was
arresting officer.

Hold the party
I am an employee of Hendry County and
have been for quite a few years. I thank God
that I'm fortunate enough to have a job in
this day and time.
Several co-workers have been let go be-
cause of the economy and raises are few.
Which brings me to the reason for writing
this letter.
Every year the county sponsors a Christ-
mas Party at the civic center for all its em-
ployees. People work very hard to make ev-
erything come together, and we have always
appreciated it.
However, this year, with people struggling
to make ends meet, I think I can speak for all
of us when I say; we would rather have the
money that is being spent on the party put in
our pockets instead.
Now, before you get the idea that I'm a
Scrooge, let me assure you there is no bah-


humbug in this idea. I love the holiday and
the joy I see on my children's faces Christ-
mas morning.
Even a few gifts can add up, so it only
stands to reason that the money spent on
hiring a DJ, the decorations and prime rib
dinner for a few hours enjoyment, could be
put to better use on each of our families. I
doubt there is one employee who would
turn down a bonus, no matter the amount,
in favor of a party. Maybe in times gone by,
but not now.
So, thank you for the idea of the an-
nual Christmas party, but please, skip this
year and show us how much you really
appreciate our work by presenting us with
something we can share with our families. I
would sign my name, but as I said, jobs are
scarce. I would hate to have to start looking
for one now.
Oh, by the way, I'm sure the raise you
commissioners received will make your
holiday a lot brighter.
(Note: The annul Christmas party is paid
for by an Employee Appreciation Fund in-
cluding proceeds of vending machines and
donations. County commissioners and other
constitutional officers did receive a raise this
year, mandated by the Florida Department
of Revenue.)


River crossing
The following is a congratulatory let-
ter from the Founders of The Fort Denaud
Group (FDG), Ken and Nancy Hauptvogel,
who had lived in Hendry County for ten
years, and retired to Fredericksburg, Texas a
few years ago.
Before coming to LaBelle, Ken had retired
as Utilities Director for the City of Randolph,
NJ, and Nancy was a career school teacher.
Both were very influential and well-educat-
ed, and saw the need for an active civic orga-
nization (FDG) to be involved in projects for
the betterment of Hendry County and our
community.
While living in LaBelle, they worked tire-
lessly on many local projects, and in 2004
they wrote a compendium on the future
placement of the proposed FDOT West
Quadrant Highway Bridge planned for about
20 years down the road, as FDOT does have
to make long-range plans for items of this
magnitude.
It is in large part Ken and Nancy's efforts,
as they worked with The Fort Denaud Group,
the Commissioners, and the Administration,
that the new proposed Bridge has now been
placed at the Hendry County line!
It is with sincere thanks and appreciation
to them for their long-time efforts on behalf


VA recognizes illnesses connected to Agent Orange


WASHINGTON -Relying on an inde-
pendent study by the Institute of Medicine
(IOM), Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K.
Shinseki decided to establish a service-con-
nection for Vietnam Veterans with three spe-
cific illnesses based on the latest evidence of
an association with the herbicides referred
to Agent Orange.
The illnesses affected by the recent deci-
sion are B cell leukemias, such as hairy cell
leukemia; Parkinson's disease; and ischemic
heart disease.
Used in Vietnam to defoliate trees and
remove concealment for the enemy, Agent
Orange left a legacy of suffering and disabil-
ity that continues to the present. Between
January 1965 and April 1970, an estimated
2.6 million military personnel who served
in Vietnam were potentially exposed to
sprayed Agent Orange.
In practical terms, Veterans who served
in Vietnam during the war and who have a

"presumed" illness don't have to prove an
association between their illnesses and their
military service. This "presumption" simpli-
fies and speeds up the application process
for benefits.
The Secretary's decision brings to 15 the
number of presumed illnesses recognized
by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
"We must do better reviews of illnesses
that may be connected to service, and we
will," Shinseki added. "Veterans who en-
dure health problems deserve timely deci-
sions based on solid evidence."

der VA's "presumption" rule as being caused
by exposure to herbicides during the Viet-
nam War are:

The members of the Hendry County
BOCC, planning board and employees, and
the members of the Fort Denaud Group are
to be congratulated for the decision on the
new bridge location, which was based on
cooperation and hard work between the
citizens of the county and their government
representatives.
This is a perfect example of how govern-
ment should work, and it truly represents a
government of the people, for the people,
and by the people. This is what our found-
ing fathers envisioned, and you showed
how well it can work.
The placement of the new bridge is the
result of weighing all facts, and was not just
based on cost or financial gain for a few. It
is a decision based on what is best for the
citizens of the county.
Hendry County is setting an example for
the rest of our country, and you should all be
very proud of the hard work that was done.
You worked together, took the time to
consider all aspects of this decision, and
your decision resulted in what is best for the
community.
This bridge location will help preserve

Who's the 'Faster Pastor'?

Motorsports Park will crown its first-ever
Faster Pastor when it holds the inaugural
Faster Pastor Race.
This is to be a fun filled night, full of fel-
lowship and is being introduced as a fund
raiser for all local churches. Come and root

pastor the stars of the night.

Charlie was a mini stock car owner and
supporter at race tracks throughout Florida

Glades County line one mile north of the
intersection of US 27 and SR 80.

Cross Country heads to regionals


For the first time in five years, both the
Boys and Girls LHS Cross Country teams
have advanced to the Regional Finals in
Tampa. With the top six teams qualifying for
Regionals from the District Championships
Friday (Nov. 6) at Estero, the Boys placed 4th
out of 14 teams and the Girls were 6th out
of 13. In the Boys race, both Gabriel Barron
(5th) and Caleb Baker (9th) broke into the
top 10 with times of 17:05 and 17:24 respec-
tively.
They were supported by teammates Da-
vid Miller (26) 18:59, Chris Timms (30) 19:11
and Nacho Acosta (43) 19:19:38.


The Girls advanced despite not having
any runners in the top 20, but all five run-
ners to score finished within a minute and
a half of each other. Ashley Golemme (23)
23:21 and Karina Barron (24) 23:23 lead the
way for the Cowgirls. They were followed
by Cory Taylor (27) 23:32, Socorro Ruiz (39)
24:27 and Jessica Madrid (42) 24:45. Both
teams head to Tampa Thursday for Friday
mornings race at Lake Park. They will have
their work cut out for them as only the top 6
teams (and top 15 individuals) will advance
to the State Finals on Nov. 21.

Hopeful Wishes program. When a person
in hospice care needs something "extra" to
add to their quality of life, we work to fulfill
their wish. A woman in our care had been
helping her daughter prepare to get mar-
ried. However, as wedding time drew near,
the woman became so ill that she could not
leave our hospice house. Her Hope care


team fulfilled a wish by arranging a wed-
ding for her daughter in our own chapel.
The mother's bed was brought in, and the
daughter was married at bedside in a cer-
emony led by our chaplain. A local grocery
store helped with the wedding and provided
the cake. It was a precious moment for ev-
eryone.
Quality of life involves much more than
medical care. Emotional and spiritual needs
must also be met. The mission of Hope is
to provide exceptional care and support to
every individual and their loved ones as they

George Szugye, 87
LABELLE George Szugye, age 87, of La-
Belle, passed away Nov. 8, 2009, in Cape Coral.
He was born Apr. 7, 1922, in Sharpsville, Pa.,
son of the late George and the late Mary (Tillian)
Szugye. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army
and served in World War II. He lived in LaBelle
for the past 19 years and was a former resident
of Girard, Ohio, and Fort Lauderdale. George
was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven
Catholic Church in LaBelle.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Eliza-
beth (Toth) Szugye, LaBelle; sons, George D.
Szugye, Ft. Lauderdale, Dennis J. Szugye, Pana-
ma City, Adrian J. Szugye, Deerfield Beach, Er-

Caloosa Belle launching community sports Web site soon


Youth and adult recreation leagues and
sports teams in the LaBelle area will soon
have a new outlet for submitting their game
results, team news and photos online. Sports
teams, players and their families have long
pasted newspaper accounts of their athletic
accomplishments in dusty scrapbooks. But
many athletes who compete, especially in
youth leagues and less well known sports,
have not received the attention that college
and high school athletes do.
That's about to change. A new Web site,
"Hendry County Sports Network," will debut
in the next few days and provide local sports
teams and leagues with an online sports
page and a resource they can call their own.
The Caloosa Belle has teamed with Com-
munity Sports Desk, a national sports soft-
ware and service company headquartered
in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The goal is to shine
a spotlight on local sports.
"This is a chance for every team, every
league, every kid or adult sports participant,
no matter their athletic ability, to make their
mark," said Matt Serpe, business manager
for Community Sports Desk.
"Hendry County Sports Network" will be
available on demand for team representa-
tives to update scores and stats, as well as
add photos and news for players, family,
friends and all local sports fans to view. Each
league or sports group that participates will
have dedicated web pages that will include
results, schedules, stats, photos and more.
There will absolutely no charge to participate
in Hendry County Sports Network. While
the service is perfect for youth and adult rec
leagues, local schools are encouraged to use
the site as well, which will be supported by
advertising.
"Hendry County Sports Network" won't
be limited to football, baseball and basket-
ball. The site can support virtually any sports
or team activity including soccer, cheerlead-
ing, rodeo, bowling, golf and many more. In
addition to appearing on the Web site, se-
lected league and team information will be
collected and published in the Caloosa Belle

look over park designs and choose a loca-

Cowboys fall hard, get ready to face Riverdale

The 57-0 match-up against Island Coast
on Nov. 6 was a "disappointing outing" for
the Cowboys, according to Coach Hal Ben-
nett, who admitted that the team didn't
play well. The Cowboys had a good defen-
sive scheme, but did not execute it well, he
noted. Still, he couldn't chalk the defeat up
to any one thing. "We turned the ball over
three times on kick off returns," he said.
They haven't mishandled those all year. The
momentum went down from there.
The team lost starting quarterback Jordan
Phillips with a shoulder injury he's had since
the Gateway Charter game. But the coaches
were impressed with David Miller as back up
quarterback. He got LaBelle's only drive go-
ing 13 plays for 67 yards and did a good job
managing the offense.

didn't choke and showed a lot of character,
coach said. Chris Garcia, who played with
a thigh bruise, was also impressive, Coach
Bennett commented. Other Cowboys who
turned in good performances included Se-
nior Andres Esquivel who did well at de-
fensive end and junior Landon Beer who
played well inside. Junior Alejandro Moreno
has come a long way, Coach Bennett said,
and is "one fine football player."
Offensive Player of the Week is Da-
vid Miller, who earned it by engineering the
Cowboys' drive in spite of the fact that he is
their #3 quarterback and gets only about 30
percent of the snaps in practice.

had to scout offense and play defense, but
never batted an eye.
This Friday the Cowboys play an even
tougher Riverdale team here in LaBelle. Riv-
erdale is on its way to the playoffs, coach
said, with just one loss this year. Coach Ben-
nett said, "We have to show up, execute our
game and keep our heads in the game."
Coach Bennett commented that it seems
the Cowboys have been outmatched in
most games this year but he said you have
to look at reality. He felt the game against Is-
land Coast was the first game his team didn't
play "their game of football." He said they'll
have to play hard against Riverdale.
He said, "The Cowboys are a great group
of young men and people need to know that.

Masons honor longtime members

Four members of the LaBelle Masonic
Lodge were honored Tuesday evening for
their combined 195 years of seniority in
Freemasonry. More than 50 brother Masons,
spouses and friends gathered at the Jaycee
Drive Lodge for the celebration which in-
cluded a catered meal, certificates and gold
medals from the Grand Lodge of Florida,
and a visit by the District Deputy Grand Mas-
ter of the 29 Masonic District.
The four honorees are Emery L. Scribner,
Jr. of LaBelle a 60-year member, H. Clayton
McDonald of Arcadia 55 years, and Robert
(Bob) Eltzroth of LaBelle and John H. Brister
of Lehigh Acres 40 years respectively.
The Freemasonry fraternity is a beautiful
system of morality, veiled in allegory and il-
lustrated by symbols. It encourages spiritual
leadership, charity and patriotism among its
members. Freemasonry is a world-wide or-
ganization with its roots dating back to the
Renaissance in Europe. The LaBelle Lodge
was founded 35 years ago and has nearly 90
members.
Mr. Scribner began his Masonic career
in Maine and served in his local Lodge as
well as positions with the Grand Lodge of
Maine. Upon becoming a winter resident in
LaBelle he obtained a dual membership and
has served the local Lodge as its Chaplain
for several years. McDonald was previously
a member of the Immokalee Lodge which
merged with the LaBelle Lodge several years
ago.
Mr. Eltzroth transferred his Masonic
membership from a Lodge in Indiana when
he moved to LaBelle. He now serves the La-
Belle Lodge as its Tyler.
Mr. Brister was also a member of the
Immokalee Lodge.
Tuesday evening's presentations took
place in the Lodge meeting room, a rare
occasion when non-members are invited
inside to witness a Masonic ceremony. Dis-
trict Deputy Grand Master Kevin Nelson of
LaBelle and Worshipful Master Curtis Dodd
made the presentation to each recipient and


offered congratulatory speeches emphasiz-
ing the accomplishments of each man. The
recipients then gave appreciative responses
which brought applause from the guests.
As it is with all Masonic gatherings, the
evening began and ended with prayers with-
in view of the open Bible.

Army Pvt. Leonardo Acosta has gradu-
ated from basic combat training at Fort
Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the
soldier studied the Army mission, history,
tradition and core values, physical fitness
and received instruction and practice in
basic combat skills, military weapons,
chemical warfare and bayonet training,
drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marks-
manship, armed and unarmed combat,
map reading, field tactics, military cour-
tesy, military justice system, basic first aid,
foot marches and field training exercises.
He is the son of Ignacio Acosta of La-
Belle and a 2009 graduate of LaBelle High
School.

OCA welcomes officials


A capacity crowd attended the first Or-
tona Community Association membership
meeting of the season on Wednesday,
Oct. 28. OCA president Hugo Geistman in-
troduced County Commissioners Echols,
Geisler and Storter-Long. Also welcomed
were Tax Collector Gail Jones, School Board
Member Jenny Allen, County Manager Wen-
dell Taylor and guests from Muse Commu-
nity Association.
Following a brief business meeting, Com-


missioner Echols gave a presentation on the
plans for the Moore Haven canal and eco-
park project. Ms. Allen reported that Glades
County schools scored well this year on
achievement tests and that a large percent
of the 2009 high school graduates have been
awarded scholarships for further education.
Mr. Geistman reported that Ortona's new
children's playground is nearing comple-
tion. The formal dedication has been set for
noon on December 8.

Benefit for Walls Family
Friends of the Rick Walls family are
sponsoring a benefit raffle. Rick has been
a speech therapist, and his wife Bonnie has
been a teacher, for Hendry County School
Board for the past 24 years. Rick has been
undergoing treatment for a brain tumor for
the past year and continues to battle this
disease. The family of Tris and Donna Chap-
man have donated a week stay at their two
bedroom, two bathroom luxury condo on
Anna Maria Island. Tickets are being sold for
$10 each or six for $50. The drawing will be
held at the end of Turkey Bingo at Country
Oaks Elementary School on Friday, Nov. 20.

Teen Court basket project
Teen Court wants to give back to the
community by stocking a basket full of
goodies so that a needy family can have a
wonderful Christmas dinner. Do you know a

Each Teen and Adult Volunteer will be
asked to bring a canned or boxed item to

Ortona goes Cuban
The Ortona Community Association will
hold a Cuban Pork Buffet Dinner on Satur-
day, Nov. 21, from 5-7 p.m. at the Ortona
Community Center, Ortona Road (Highway

This all-you-can-eat meal features deli-
cious Cuban pork roast prepared from a
special recipe by Ortona resident and Glades
County Commissioner Donna Storter-Long.
The Cuban style menu includes black beans
and rice, plantains, salad, garlic toast, des-

NOTICE OF INTENT TO USE UNIFORM METHOD OF COLLECTING
NON-AD VALOREM ASSESSMENTS
Hendry County, Florida (the "County") hereby provides notice, pursuant to
Section 197.3632(3)(a), Florida Statutes, of its intent to use the uniform
method of collecting non-ad valorem special assessments to be levied within
the Banyan Village area, Port LaBelle Plat Units 10-13, within the unincorpo-
rated area of the County, for capital costs associated with construction of
water lines for Banyan Village and service assessments for maintenance of
such water lines commencing with the Fiscal Year beginning on October 1,
2010, and continuing each year until discontinued by the County. The
County will consider the adoption of a resolution electing to use the uniform
method of collecting such assessments authorized by Section 197.3632,
Florida Statutes, at a public hearing to be held at 5:00 p.m. on December 8,
2009, in the Commission Room, Clewiston City Hall, 115 West Ventura Ave-
nue, Clewiston, Florida. Such resolution will state the need for the levy and
will contain a legal description of the boundaries of the real property subject
to the levy. Copies of the proposed form of resolution, which contains the
legal description of the real property subject to the levy, are on file at the
County Administrator's Ofice, 165 S. Lee Street, LaBelle, Florida. All inter-
ested persons are invited to attend.
In the event any person decides to appeal any decision by the County
with respect to any matter relabng to the consideration of the resolution at
the above-referenced public hearing, a record of the proceeding may be
needed and in such an event, such person may need to ensure that a ver-
batm record of the public hearing is made, which record includes the testi-
mony and evidence on which the appeal is to be based. In accordance with
the Americans with Disabilities Act, persons needing a special accommoda-
bon or an interpreter to participate in this proceeding should contact the
County Clerk at (863) 675-5217, seven days days prior to the date of the
hearing.

Homecoming Week 2009 was perhaps
the best Homecoming Week at LaBelle High
School ever. This annual event took place
from Oct. 19-24. Students seemed to enjoy
all of the activities, and there was excellent
participation by a significantly large number
of students in all of the activities.
Each day of the week was a theme day,
with individual students selected as those
being best dressed for each theme. Monday
was Pajama Day with Senior Toni Tolar voted
best dressed. On Tuesday another senior was
voted best dressed on Opposite Day, Steve
Maldanado. Wednesday Sport's Day con-
tinued the domination by seniors as Karina
Baron AKA The Hockey Player. Thursday's
Character Day featured a lot of interesting at-
tire with Myra Zamorran selected as the best
character.
Wednesday evening featured the Boy's
Volleyball games with the Sophomores beat-
ing the Freshman in the first set of games,
and the Juniors defeating the Seniors in the
second set. Bragging rights for the coming
year went to the Juniors as they destroyed
the Sophomores in the finals. This is the
third year that Boy's Volleyball has become
part of the Homecoming Week activities. It
has become a very popular part of Home-
coming Week and a good crowd was on
hand to watch the action. However, the Girl's
PowderPuff football game has been a part of
Homecoming Week for a very long time and
is still the featured event of the night. In the
first game the Freshmen Girls dominated the
