Leotis Troutman, resident of La-
Belle for over 30 years and a trans-
plant from New
York, passed
away Oct. 21,
2009. He was a
Florida native,
born in Jackson-
ville on January
25, 1923. He was
86 years old.

electronic engineer from 1983-93
by Family Health Center.
He joined the LaBelle Kiwanis
where he was a dedicated mem-
ber from 1983-2000, serving as
president for a time. Leotis was al-
ways easy to find just look for the
kids. He was a dedicated volunteer
at many functions for children in-
cluding Kids Day.
He helped the Key Club sell and
deliver Christmas trees and, along
with his dear wife, delivered Christ-
mas meals to those in need with
the veterans organizations.
He also participated in building
Habitat for Humanity homes and
in other functions.
He could often be found using
his mechanical skills to help his
neighbors with repairs.
Leotis was a 32nd degree Ma-
son and a loyal deacon at St. Mat-
thew Missionary Baptist Church
under Rev. Kenneth Holley.
Leotis served his country in
the US Army during World War II,
mainly stationed in Aberdeen, MD.

items. All of the proceeds from this event go
directly to helping animals in the shelter.
Once again, the humane society used the
gala to recognize some very special animal
lovers. This year Hannah Boone and Haley
Boone were the dual recipients of the Vol-
unteer of the Year Award. The twins spend
many hours at the facility, playing with the
animals a wonderful way to help social-
ize the dogs and cats and to help keep them
emotionally healthy while they wait for the
right family to adopt them. One of the twins
is allergic to cats so she plays with the dogs
and her sister plays with the cats.
Ellen Ferguson received the prestigious
Cornelius "Keis" Huijer Award for Philan-
thropic Efforts for Animals.
Ellen is the humane society secretary, but
her involvement only begins there. Accord-
ing to shelter director Suzanne Bonnell, El-
len single-handedly planned and put on the
Horse Help 101 seminar as a fund raiser for
the shelter this year. She also solicited vol-
unteers and helped with some 80 percent
of the fund raisers and activities the humane
society put on. In addition, Suzanne said El-
len is "always happy, ready to work and full
of information."

Not surprisingly, the shelter is facing
tough financial times. That's why the fund
raisers are so important. The humane soci-
ety doesn't make any money on pet adop-
tions. The facility pays for vaccinations, fecal
checks, worming and, of course, food and
housing for these animals.
From January through Oct. 23 of this
year. Caloosa Humane Society adopted 113
animals out. A few more should find homes
between now and the end of the year. Up
through Oct. 23, the shelter received a total
of 719 animals (including several horses).
In addition 285 animals transferred to no
kill shelters; 494 transferred in from Animal
Control (both Hendry and Glades).
The number of animals euthanized has
declined this year. Ms. Bonnell said that is
because they now require a fee from own-
ers giving up their pet. "It's unfortunate,"
she said, "but necessary." The shelter charg-
es $20 for cats, $40 for dogs. There is a re-
duced charge for litters if the owner has the
mother spayed.
At this time, all the shelter's volunteer
workers are youths, spending time there
after school and on Saturdays. The facility
averages about ten volunteers per month.

After the war ended, he married his love,
Corine B. Troutman. They were married in
New York in 1946, and had been married for
63 years.
The couple's surviving children are Chris-
topher Troutman and Tanya Troutman. Leo
was predeceased by children Jackie Russ
and Thomas McDean.
Services will be held at LaBelle High
School Auditorium Saturday, Oct. 31, at 11
a.m. Visitation begins one hour before. His
ashes are to be scattered on a mountain.

ed Oct. 25 and charged on a warrant with
fraud false owner pawned items over $300.
The items had been missing since August 6.
Deputy George Elver was arresting officer.
Jahaziel Ochoa-Cruz, 24, was arrested
Oct. 24 and charged on a Glades County
warrant for failure to appear. S. Harrynarne
was arresting officer.
Bruce Ronald Rimes, 52, was arrested
Oct. 23 and charged with obstruction of jus-
tice tampering in a misdemeanor proceed-
ing. Deputy K. Herrera was arresting officer.
Sergio Anthony Alejandre, 21, was ar-
rested Oct. 23 and charged with possession
of cocaine and possession and/or use of nar-
cotic equipment. Inv. Archer was arresting
officer.
Patricia Acosta, 15, was arrested Oct. 23
and charged with aggravated battery caus-
ing bodily harm or disability and disturbing
the peace breach of peace. Deputy Ty Mar-
shall was arresting officer.
William Allen Vaughn Jr., 45, was arrest-
ed Oct. 22 and charged on an Okeechobee
County warrant for resisting arrest without
violence. Sgt. M. Favara was arresting offi-
cer.
Michael Arron Rosas, 18, was arrested
Oct. 21 and charged on a warrant with
Failure to Appear felony offense. Deputy J.
Woods was arresting officer.
Mitchell Young Jr., 29, was arrested Oct.
21 and charged on a Highlands County war-
rant as a VOP: Fugitive from Justice. Deputy
Van Fleet was arresting officer.

Mario Lopez, 31, was arrested Oct. 24


and charged with nonmoving traffic viola-
tion driving with a suspended license ha-
bitual offender. Deputy T. Neidert was arrest-
ing officer.
Anthony Leroy Demeritt Jr., 21, was ar-
rested Oct. 23 and charged with a nonmov-
ing traffic violation driving with a suspended
license first offense and probation violation -
felony or community control. Deputy J. Gar-

Amanda Jean Cordell, 26, was arrested
Oct. 23 and charged with probation viola-
tion felony or community control. Deputy J.

Vinson Chevell Hunter, 40, was arrested

gitive from Justice warrant for failure to pay

Elida Perez, 29, was arrested Oct. 21 and

operating a motor vehicle without a valid li-

Tonya Rachell Vaughn, 30, was arrested
Oct. 20 and charged with habitual traffic of-
fender flee or attempt to elude. CPD Officer

Anthony Leonard Perkins, 31, was ar-

of stolen property driver license or ID card,

the dates of the 2008 Sheriff's Citizen Acad-
emy, which will begin November 4, at 7 p.m.

Join citizens' academy Witch's Brew

Black and white newspaper is one of the
best free deodorizers you will find. Put them
in stinky shoes, plastic containers that de-
velop musty odors or
ball up a few sheets
and put in the bottom
of your garbage can.
If you want to air out
your winter stuff and
hang it on the clothes
line, for the young
whippersnappers that
is a piece of rope or
wire that goes from
one pole to the other, use two hangers with
one facing one way and the other opposite.
This keeps them from blowing off the line.
Reheat leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet
on your stove burner set at med-low heat
until hot. This keeps the bottom crispy.
When you are using store bought, canned
frosting, whip it for a few minutes with your
electric mixer and it will double in size.
The Chamber of Commerce dinner was,
as usual, a success. The food was good, the
decorations were unusual and clever and I
was having a good time until..... I saw an old
friend talking on a cell phone and went over
to give him a hug. He didn't respond and
the attractive woman next to him looked
surprised. After a while, I walked away,
puzzled. A few hours later I saw them at a
nearby table and realized that I had no clue
as to who they were. I WILL wear my glass-
es more ofter ... I swear!

Case manager?
County Administration, Court Adminis-
tration, and Judge Sloan all threw a sales
pitch to the county commissioners for the
case manager position. The commission-
ers that support this position do not have a
clue about what happens at the courthouse
and why the jail is overcrowded. The jail
has 193 bed spaces available and will have
another 96 available in a couple of months.
That means we will have 289 beds available
for under 200 inmates. Sheriff Whidden has
been giving "notice to appears" on misde-
meanor charges until the courts can get their
house in order (old stacked up cases). The


problem with Court Administration is, they
do not realize that they're the problem. Suc-
cess to them is measured by the amount of
money that they throw away, not the prog-
ress they make. Number one, the case man-
ager makes recommendations to the judge
on criminal misdemeanor and felony cases
that they feel would qualify for release. The
case manager will have no authority to ar-
rest and supervise these defendants, the
case manager can only attempt to monitor
them by telephone. The sheriff's office will
be sent out to baby sit and bring them back
to jail for any violations (we will need more
deputies). Secondly, the case manager will
have no authority or ability to speed up the
state's attorney or public defender's office to
resolve cases, it just will not happen. It's fun-
ny that Court Administration just happened
to find $260,000.00 from our court cost fee
to throw away on this program, while the
current county employees struggle with no
raises and possible lay-offs.
So, if you don't get a warm and fuzzy feel-
ing about this proposed program,,,,just call
your Commissioners.


Praise for march
After reading negative, name-calling
comments in the Letters to the Editor (in the
Naples Daily News) concerning the 912 Tax
marchers written by individuals that were
not there, it appears many people get their
opinion from the televised news media. As
someone that actually attended this march,
I was aware that the mainstream television
and cable news stations were biased but
was naive as to the extent until I watched
their coverage.
The media reported 70,000 marchers.
The estimates are up to 1 million according
to numerous sources. By noon all the trains
were shut down due to over capacity and all
roads leading into D.C. were at a standstill.
And they kept coming.
Contradictory to the media, I observed
the following: All races attended with blacks
in leadership positions as speakers and en-
tertainers.
The majority of ages marching were in
their 20's through 50's.
Every state was represented from Maine
to California. The majority that I spoke with

Red Ribbon Week began after the kid-
napping, torture and brutal murder of Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent
Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985. Agent
Camarena had been working undercover in
Guadalajara, Mexico, for over four years. His
efforts led to a tip that resulted in the discov-
ery of a multimillion dollar narcotics manu-
facturing operation in Chihuahua, Mexico.
The successful eradication of this and other
drug production operations angered leaders
of several drug cartels who sought revenge.
As a result, they murdered key informants
and then, on February 7, 1985, they kid-
napped Agent Camarena and his pilot Cap-
tain Alfredo Zavala-Avelar (taken separately
on the same day).
It is believed that Special Agent Camare-
na's death actually occurred two days later,
but his body was not discovered until March
5, 1985. He was 37 years old and was sur-
vived by his wife, Mika and their three chil-
dren, Enrique, Daniel and Erik. During his 11
years with DEA, Kiki received two Sustained
Superior Performance Awards, a Special
Achievement Award and, posthumously, the

Administrator's Award of Honor, the highest
award granted by DEA.
Shortly after Kiki's death, Congressman
Duncan Hunter, and high school friend Hen-
ry Lozano launched Camarena Clubs in Ki-
ki's hometown of Calexico, California. Hun-
dreds of club members including Calexico
High School teacher David Dhillon wore red
ribbons and pledged to lead drug-free lives
to honor the sacrifices made by Kiki Cama-
rena and others on behalf of all Americans.
Red Ribbon Week eventually gained mo-
mentum throughout California and later the
United States. In 1985, club members pre-
sented the "Camarena Club Proclamation"
to then First Lady Nancy Reagan, bringing it
national attention. The campaign was then
formalized in 1988 with President and Mrs.
Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons.
Today, the eight-day celebration is spon-
sored by the National Family Partnership
(previously known as the Federation of Par-
ents for Drug Free Youth), and has become
the annual catalyst to show intolerance for
drugs in our schools, work places and com-
munities. Each year, during the last week in

October, more than 80 million young peo-
ple and adults show their commitment to a
healthy, drug-free life by wearing or display-
ing the Red Ribbon.
Today, the Red Ribbon Week brings mil-
lions of people together to raise awareness
regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and
other drug and violence prevention, early in-
tervention and treatment services. It is the
largest, most visible prevention awareness
campaign observed annually in the United
States.
Locally, our Students Working Against
Tobacco (SWAT) and Students Against De-
structive Decisions (SADD) groups have tak-
en on the effort to educate and empower our
youth, parents and community. Throughout
the week you might have noticed that the
local dealerships have participated by bring-
ing their RED cars to the front and display-
ing Red Ribbons. The youth have put on
several activities at their school to promote
and bring attention to their fight against al-
cohol, tobacco and drugs. If you would like
to help in this local fight please contact Vala-

all with the same goals. To support the Con-
stitution and to vote out all corrupt and spe-
cial interest politicians from both parties.
I have never met a kinder, friendlier, car-
ing, considerate, and more patriotic group
of people.
After the inauguration, we taxpayers paid
over one million dollars to clean up the trash
left behind. Amazingly, there was not a tis-
sue left on the ground by these marchers.
Cost to the taxpayers: Zero. Millions injected
into the national and D.C. economy: Price-
less!

To be or not to be 'NOBEL?'
With all of the controversy circulating
around the Globe on Obama's being award-
ed The Nobel Peace prize, I thought a few
words from my deceased Grandfather might
have relevance, including that Shakespear-
ean quote, "To be or not to be "NOBEL? and
the issue that prompted Grandpa's words
was the U. S. getting out of Viet Nam.
Grandpa's comments involved a story
about an old Cherokee Indian Chief advising
his grandson about the battle that goes on
inside every human being.
He advised the grandson that there is a
battle between two wolves going on inside
of each of us. One is Evil and is angry, envi-
ous, jealous, sorrowful, regrettable, greedy,
arrogant, self-piteous, guilt-ridden, resentful,
untruthful, false pride, narcissistic, egocen-
tric, and audacious. The other is Good, joyful,
peaceful, loving, empathetic, sympathetic,
hopeful, serene, humble, kind, benevolent,
generous, charitable, truthful, compassion-
ate, loyal, and faithful.
The grandson listened carefully but after
a moment questioned as to which of the
wolves wins out in the battles of life? After
a moment of thoughtful concern, the Chief
simply answered that it is "The one you
feed."
Now you can agree or disagree, but it is
quite evident that a "Wolf" is alive and rav-
enously "feeding" in the White House. Is it
Wolf one or Wolf two? And how long do we
have before he huffs and puffs and blows
our country down?

The Florida Department of Transportation, District One, will conduct an alternatives
public workshop on the proposed improvements to State Road (S.R.) 29 in Hendry
and Glades Counties, Florida. The meeting will be held in an open house format on
Thursday, November 5, 2009, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, at the LaBelle Civic Center,
481 Highway 80 West (behind City Hall) in LaBelle, Florida. If severe weather or other
unforeseen conditions cause the workshop to be postponed, it will be held on the alternate
date of December 3, 2009. The proposed improvement involves adding two lanes to the
existing S.R. 29 from County Road (C.R.) 80A (Cowboy Way) to U.S. 27. The study is also
evaluating alternatives east of LaBelle.


This alternatives public workshop is
being held to present the project
progress to date and obtain
comments from the general public on
the alternatives being considered.
Department representatives will be
available during the meeting to
informally discuss the project and
answer questions. Attendees are
encouraged to come to this meeting
at any time between 5:30 pm and
7:30 pm to review the proposed
transportation improvements.

Public participation is solicited without

Patricia T. Wilder, 74
DEERFIELD, Ohio Patricia T. Wilder, 74, of
Deerfield, passed away Oct. 26, 2009.
Patty was born in
San Juan, Puerto Ri-
co, and grew up all
over the country as a
result of her father's
army career. After
marriage and two
children, she pur-
sued a career as a la-
boratory technician.
She settled in the
Deland, Fla., area in
the 1970s and
worked in the lab at West Volusia. In 1997, she
moved to Ohio to live close to her daughter and
grandchildren.
Patty loved the simple things of life: a really
good cup of coffee, an interesting book to read,
the birdsong out her window. She loved watch-
ing the seasons change; autumn and spring
were her favorites. Most of all she enjoyed her
sewing room. Creating clothes while listening to
classical music was an enjoyable pastime for
her.
Patty was preceded in death by her son,
Thomas Wilder. She is survived by her daugh-
ter, Cameron (Derek) Huffman; sister, Cameron
(Stanley) Simms; and grandchildren, Carrmon
Conant, Tina (David) Paroline, and Nathan (Ra-
chel) Huffman.
Per Patty's wishes, cremation has taken place
and there will be no services.

LABELLE Robert Dale Fielder, age 53, of La-
Belle, passed away Oct. 24, 2009, in Tampa.
He was born Dec. 15, 1955, in Clewiston.
Survivors include his wife, Kimberly Jean
Yelgington Fielder of LaBelle; daughters, Lind-
sey Wiggins (Matt) of Clewiston, and Kim Field-
er of Clewiston; father, James A. Fielder
(Shirley) of Clewiston; mother, Betty Jean Field-
er of Clewiston; brother, Terrel Fielder (Nicole)
of Lakeport; sisters, Lizann Shaw (Donald) of
Clewiston and Lynn Briefman (Sam) of Clewis-
ton; nephews, Wayne and Michael; nieces,
Morgan and Michelle (A.J.); and great-nephew,
Christopher.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Oct.
30, at First Baptist Church of Clewiston with
Pastor Pedro Cabrera and Pastor Edward Green
officiating. Interment will follow in Ortona Ce-
metery, Moore Haven. Visitation will be today,
Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Akin-Davis Funeral
Home in Clewiston.

Beckwith is finalist



for Stevie awards


(Fort Myers, FL) Samira K. Beckwith,
President and CEO of Hope HealthCare Ser-
vices, has been named a finalist in two cat-
egories in the 6th annual Stevie Awards for
Women in Business: Lifetime Achievement
and Best Executive Non-profit or Govern-
ment. More than 1,100 entries were submit-
ted internationally for consideration in 54
categories.
The Stevie Awards for Women in Busi-
ness honor women executives, entrepre-
neurs, and the companies they run world-
wide. The Stevie Awards have been hailed as
the world's premier business awards.
Nicknamed the Stevies for the Greek word
"crowned," winners will be announced dur-
ing a gala event at the Marriott Marquis hotel
in New York on Nov. 13. Nominated women
executives and entrepreneurs from the Unit-
ed States and several other countries are ex-
pected to attend. The presentations will be
broadcast live on radio in the U.S.A. by the
Business TalkRadio Network.
As President and CEO of Hope HealthCare
Services, Beckwith is a leader in improving
health care on the local, state and national
levels. She has served in this position since
1991 and has more than 30 years of health
care and hospice experience. Under her
leadership, Hope's services, programs, staff
and volunteers have grown and now pro-
vide care for more than 2,300 people each
day, through Hope Hospice and other com-
prehensive care programs for people with
serious illness in Lee, Glades, Hendry, High-
lands, Hardee, Charlotte and Collier coun-
ties. She has led Hope to receive numerous
national awards for quality service and in-
novation.
Beckwith who recently received The
Ohio State University Alumni Association's
highest honor, the Alumni Medalist Award -
was selected as a finalist for the Stevie Awards
in recognition of her lifetime achievements
in health care and accomplishments of sig-
nificance as an executive at a not-for-profit
organization.
"Being selected as a finalist for the Stevie
Awards shines an international spotlight on
the great work of the Hope staff and volun-
teers," Beckwith said. "We have watched


the needs in our community grow and have
worked diligently to provide a continuum of
programs and services to meet those needs.

Finalists were chosen by business pro-
fessionals worldwide during preliminary
judging. Members of the Awards' Board of
Distinguished Judges and Advisors and their
staffs will select Stevie Award winners from
among the Finalists during final judging.

They must sign and adhere to a code of
ethics. They must then maintain their cer-
tification through continuing education
programs.
The CCA program is administered locally
in 37 states. In Florida, the Florida Fertilizer
& Agrichemical Association oversees it.

The Junior Varsity Cowboys bested Cardi-
nal Mooney 20-14 on Thursday, Oct. 22.
Patrick Graham came across first with a
touchdown, followed by Tyler O'Ferrell on a
quarterback sneak. Tyler also had a hand in
the two-point conversion, getting the ball to
Cory O'Ferrell.
Lenel Jones put things over the top with
the third LaBelle touchdown of the game.
Coach McLean noted that his team played
"real good" and was on their game.
In the third and fourth quarters the Cow-
boys held the ball for an impressive 14 min-
utes, giving up the ball to Mooney only twice
in the fourth quarter.
Defensively Zavarius Philius turned in 8
tackles. Ronnie Burton contributed two tack-
les and one interception to the win. Cade
Logan had four tackles and Lenel Jones had
three tackles and one pass deflection.
Coach said his team has played hard all
season and their dedication has paid off with
back-to-back wins. The JV beat Clewiston
last week in a close 14-12 win.
Coach McLain praised his team, saying
they played tough and disciplined. The JV
Cowboys now have a 4-3 record for the sea-
son.


The JV Cowboys are looking forward to
meeting Evangelica Christian this Thursday.
To win, the Cowboys must play hard, Coach
McLain said. He hopes to end the season on
a good note the same way it started. He
warned that the Cowboys can't underesti-
mate their opponent they must focus on
the job they have to do. Come out to the JV
Cowboys' last game of the season at home
against ECS Thursday, Oct. 29, 6 p.m.

The LaBelle High School Cross Country
teams competed at the Pre-District race in
Estero (Oct. 20). The race was designed to
familiarize runners with the same course
and competition they will see on November
6.
Although no team scores were kept, run-
ners times were recorded by their coaches.
Among an estimated 15 teams the Cowgirls
ran well, placing three girls in the top 25 run-
ners.
Cory Taylor lead the way with a time of
24:12. She was followed by "Coco Puff"
Ruiz (24:29) and Ashley "Go Go" Golemme


(24:56).
In the Boys race, Gabriel Barron contin-
ued to impress, improving his time almost
30 seconds from Saturday's race at Mariner.
He finished second over-all with a time of
16:55. He was followed by four runners
who all ran under 20 minutes. They were,
dual sport athlete (football) David Miller
(19:10), Chris Timms (19:34), Carlos San-
tillan (19:51) and "Nacho" Acosta (19:54).
Both teams' next race is Tuesday. Oct. 27,
in Clewiston at 4:00 and finish their regular
season with a home race, the Caloosa Chase
on Halloween morning at 8 a.m.

Boland attends Legion

Dennis R. Boland of LaBelle recently re-
turned from his Board of Directors meeting
with The American Legion Child Welfare
Foundation, Inc., Children & Youth Com-
mission meeting and the National Executive
Board meeting at the National Headquarters
of The American Legion, which is located in
Indianapolis, IN.
On Sunday, Oct. 11, Mr. Boland as Presi-
dent of The American Legion Child Welfare
Foundation presided over the meeting of its
Board of Directors to revue 91 grant applica-
tions from different children's organizations.
After reviewing the grant applications a total
of $636,869.75 was granted to 19 children's
organizations.
In reviewing the grants applications many
were disqualified due to administrative, sala-
ry and travel cost that were built in the grants

Mission trip dinner planned
Eastside Baptist Church is having a din-
ner to raise monies for mission work in Ari-
zona. The meal consists of grilled pork steak
or a half grilled chicken, green beans, pota-
toes. cole slaw, roll, tea and dessert and will
served from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the
church social hall. Drive-thru service provid-
ed. Delivery is available when five or more
meals go to one location in town. Tickets

Saturday, Nov. 14 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Christ Central plans Fall Fest
Christ Central LaBelle will host its annual
Fall Fest 09 at the Rodeo Grounds, Oct. 31,

ing) and medical needs of 1,344 children

Cowboys win big against Gateway

The LaBelle Cowboys got their first taste
of victory Oct. 23. It was Homecoming, and
a district game against Gateway Charter. The
Cowboys walked away with a whopping
42-6 win under their belt.
"It was a good one!" an overjoyed Coach
Hal Bennett said. "We played very, very
well."
He added that the Cowboys minimized
mistakes and played a complete game. Pos-
sibly most important, his boys gained confi-
dence as a result of the win. It was the most
important ingredient that they lacked, he
said.
Coach Bennett still sees
"big things ahead of us"
and expects to finish the
season strong. ---
As a team, the Cowboys
racked up 458 total yards
on the night their best
showing of the season. Of
those yards, 350 of them

blocks. Defensively the Cowboys held Gate-

Getting a jump on Relay for Life
The Tolar family is in its third year supporting the Relay for Life. Debbie Tolar
said they participate because "It's the best way to save lives." As the mother
of a cancer victim, Debbie said it's emotional but a "sweet, good feeling"
and she loves to get the youth involved. A mock Relay for Life attracted in-
terested folks to the Sports Park Oct. 6 where they could learn what it's all
about. For the real Relay the Tolars will set up a "Mash" unit and hope to have
hospital bed races and even an appearance from "Hot Lips Hoolihan." She
said it takes bravery and a lot of character to face cancer. Their "Mash" unit
includes from left: Marie and Cory, Tony and Debbie Tolar, Jana Smith and
Brittany Deras. If you would like to have a team at the Relay for Life, please

Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child is an annual ministry sponsored by Samaritan's
Purse, a non-denominational evangelical Christian organization engaged in
crisis relief and community development. Founded in 1970 and active around
the world, Samaritan's Purse offers aid to the victims of war, poverty, natural
disasters, disease and famine in response to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The organization is based in Boone, NC, and is headed by Franklin Graham, the
son of evangelist Billy Graham. Shoeboxes are decorated and filled with age/
gender appropriate items and taken to a church for blessings and transported
to a "drop off" point for shipping to their final destinations. These local ladies
are working to make this ministry a success in our community. If you would like
to be a part of this project and donate small items such as toys, toothbrushes,
toothpaste, small children's books, etc. please bring them to the Salon Mer-
cedes, 70 Yeomans Avenue. They are also in need of monetary donations for
postage ($7 per shoebox). Share your blessings and make a child smile.
